Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – If you follow any the news at all, you already know that Las Vegas got hit with torrential (that is an understatement) rain on Tuesday, September 11. Within hours, the skies were clear but the damage was done. Flooded homes, cars, and dirt/sand/gravel covering streets around the valley.

I had my own personal scare. Water was coming off my roof in sheer sheets (like a waterfall — we don’t have gutters here, and a gutter wouldn’t have held up anyway) and ponding of the water briefly came up on the back of my house a few inches. Fortunately, the rain let up just enough for it to subside before the next storm band slammed in and did it again.

All of the local news stations pretty much focused on the high water and flooding in the suburbs (locals generally don’t visit The Strip, which I’ve always found kind of strange… like living at the beach but never hitting the sand). However, we found a couple of good YouTube videos from The Strip and we’ve linked them up in the “What We’re Watching” segment.

Temps for the next 10 days are generally in the low 90’s with no rain in site. If you have a pending visit, you’ll be fine!

Many, Many, Many Thanks – A couple of months ago, we noticed that our sites were running just a little bit slow. We didn’t give it much thought at the time. Sometimes the internet is slower than others. Then… our IT guy told me that we need to upgrade to better, faster servers. I’m like “Why, what’s up… the way we’ve been doing it the past couple of years has been fine”. In fact, a couple of years ago, we upgraded to a situation that had far more capacity than we needed!

I’m going to confess something that may confound others in this field, but I don’t keep track of our traffic. We’re a small, privately held outfit. We just do what we do and let the chips fall where they may. Hence, I didn’t realize that our website traffic has been on a pretty nice rise!

So, I very much want to thank those of you who continue to tell your friends to visit AccessVegas.com — where they can subscribe to this newsletter — and for those of you who use us to help keep you informed on what’s hot and what’s new in Las Vegas by clicking on all of the informational links to stories that we provide each week.

We know that many of you are able to take advantage of direct room offers from the hotels themselves and thus can’t patronize our hotels partner (who helps support our efforts here). But, you can still tell people about our newsletter and AccessVegas.com on your favorite travel message boards, trip reports you make on those ratings sites, and similar.

For those of you yet to tell your friends… what are you waiting for?!? If they visit Las Vegas, you know that we’ll deliver the very latest, best, and most pertinent visitor information without the stuff you don’t care about. We spend countless hours sifting through Las Vegas information so you don’t have to!

holly madison peepshow las vegasLights Out For Holly – Peepshow mainstay Holly Madison — now in her fourth month of pregnancy — will make her last Peepshow appearance on October 21. Prior to Holly, the show had a somewhat rotating cash of lead females including Kelly Monaco, Melanie Brown, and Aubrey O’Day. Rumors  that Jenny McCarthy or Carmen Electra might take over the roll have been squashed.

Madison had initially been scheduled to end her run at the end of this year in order to start a family, but evidently got started a little early! The father is her boyfriend Pasquale Rotella, the CEO of Electric Daisy Carnival.

Peepshow has been a long-time sponsor of this newsletter and we hope that the show (and our advertising relationship) continues to have a great post-Holly run. But if you want to see “Holly-Peep” version of the show and you’re going to be here before October 21, Click For Peepshow Las Vegas Tickets.

Light Up Your Life With Las Vegas – You can now buy a light from the famous Las Vegas sign. The actual lights used on the sign are changed out the first Tuesday of each month, and done so sequentially. Availability permitting (first come, first served), you can buy a light related to a specific month and a specific day of that month. Which means you can get a light that was on the sign when you visited it, or simply a light that was in use on a special day in our life. Read more at Man has bright idea to sell part of Las Vegas history and you can purchase the lights at http://officiallasvegaslight.com

Don’t Hold Your Breath For Interstate 11 – For the past couple of years, I’ve been keeping you up on the move to upgrade the Phoenix to Las Vegas portion of US Highway 93 to Interstate 11. This would involve four-laning the entire route (approximately 1/4 of the stretch is still two-lane highway), brining it all up to Interstate highway standards in terms of speed and safety, and making the entire stretch “controlled access” freeway (overpasses with onramps and offramps with no roads or driveways offshooting the route).

Sounds good, right? Certainly for those of you who visit by driving in from Arizona, New Mexico and points southeast of us.

Not so fast. Although in the planning stages, the project could take up to 20 years for completion with nearly the first decade alone being devoted simply to environmental studies of the route. Now, let me be clear on something: I don’t believe in being cruel to animals. I could understand if this was a brand new highway looking to run through some kind of wildlife refuge and they want to make sure that all the animals don’t get hit by cars (which could hurt the car occupants just as much as the animals). But with the exception of a new 12 mile stretch that will bypass Boulder City, what we have here is an already established route that has been in place for many, many DECADES.

Why on earth do we need a long, expensive, costly environmental study to improve an existing road is far beyond unreasonable. For more on this story, check out Interstate 11 could become an afterthought

Putting It In Perspective – During the height of the recession when the naysayers were hoping for the death of Las Vegas (how’d that work out for them), hotel occupancy was in the upper 70’th percentile and I noted that most cities would kill for those kinds of numbers.

Case and point: Occupancy in London for the Olympic Games was right around 80%. For the Olympics! And, most U.S. cities see occupancy rates of around 55-60% regularly. By last year, room occupancy was already pushing 90% here, and we expect an even better 2012!

Mystere by Sarah Jane Woodall

Mystere by Cirque du Soleil – The Original Whimsical Game Changer – Vegas entertainment used to mean little more than cheesy lounge singers and spandex-clad tiger wranglers. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – Hour after hour of pouring rain this past Wednesday dropped temps into the low 70’s and gave us a taste of some real Southeastern States humidity. However, in typical desert fashion, the clouds went on their way, the air dried back up again, and we’re getting ready to settle into a couple of the most enjoyable months of the year.

September’s average high comes in at a comfortable (for us) 94 degrees, October registers 81, and then we brace for November with a pleasant 67 during the shorter days but dipping to the upper 40’s overnight. (That is when I kiss my precious al fresco evening dinners at home and my outdoor TV goodbye for the season). Come January, I’ll be yearning for summer again. I’ll take 95 degrees over 45 degrees any time.

Food, Food, And More Food – I’ve had people jest (somewhat seriously) that we’re turning into a food newsletter. The reality is that Las Vegas continues to rank as one of the top culinary destinations in the world, and nary a month or two goes by where we don’t have some kind of really cool/interesting restaurant opening. Plus the competition drives all the specials and deals we regularly bring to you.

This issue, we did include quite a bit of information on restaurants that are participating in Restaurant Week where top dining spots create prix fixe (fixed price) meals with some of the proceeds benefiting some of our local homeless and hungry. If you are in town, absolutely take advantage!

Bridge At Hoover Dam – If you visit Las Vegas from anywhere southeast of us, you’ll know that the completion of the Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge over Hoover Dam really has an impact on your visits, cutting tons of time off that used to be spent winding down the canyon, across the dam, and back up again. We’ve found a photographer who took amazing photos during and after construction of the dam. Check them out at Bridge At Hoover Dam

2000 Feet Above Sea Level – The myth that Las Vegas casinos pump oxygen into the air to make you feel more alive and alert was dispelled long, long ago. (The cost would be enormous, and oxygenated air would create a greater risk of serious fire). If anything, many of you experience less oxygen when you are here as the tourism areas of Las Vegas sit just above 2000 feet.

So what gives us all that rush? A combination of two things: 1. All the stimulus and excitement gets your adrenalin running and 2. Most of you are probably doing a lot more moving around (walking and walking and walking) than you do at home, really getting your blood moving.

World’s Toughest Fixes – If you have Netlfix, check out season 2 of World’s Toughest Fixes where they work on the Fremont Street Canopy light, Bellagio fountain water guns, and fix the giant, moving stage at Cirque du Soleil’s KA.

MIA – I’ll most likely be missing next issue, but come September should be able to get back to fully penning both of my sections. So… if you have any comments, questions, or trip reports for Members Mania, type away to AccessVegas@AccessVegas.com

Enjoy This Issue!

Australian Bee Gees by Guy Chapman

The Australian Bee Gees – An Unforgettable Night Of Music And Fun – There are few musical groups that better embody the disco charged era of the 1970Æs better than the Bee Gees. The brothers Gibb (Barry, Robin, and Maurice) were most easily recognized for the era of polyester pants and John Travolta movies, but their music goes farther than that. Thanks to the tribute group Australian Bee Gees, disco is not dead. In fact, it resides well within the castle walls of the Excalibur Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Thunder From Down Under by Sarah Jane Woodall

Thunder From Down Under – These Athletic Guys Are Actually Enjoying Themselves – So youÆre coming to Vegas for your bachelorette party. Or birthday, or divorce… or just a girlsÆ weekend away. You want to drink, party… and ogle hot beefcake. Where do you go?

There are several options for the frisky female on the Vegas Strip, but if you only see one male revue, make it Thunder From Down Under. Other revues may offer cheaper tickets or more well-established names, but take it from someone who has seen them all û the best bang for your buck is Thunder, hands down!

Thunder From Down Under is a crew of ripped Australian hardbodies, straight out of your wildest Harlequin Romance-fueled dreams. IÆm not sure whatÆs in the water down there, but they sure do breed some mighty fine specimens! Washboard abs, tight buns, gleaming smiles… these guys have it all. And theyÆre not afraid to use it!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – I’m back in the saddle. Kind of. My participation here will still be hit and miss for a little while longer, and Members Mania will be on hiatus until that time. Cool new stuff coming your way around the middle of fall from us (knock on wood)! In the meantime, here are a few tidbits I’ve had floating around…

You Can Still Rock In America – Guns N’ Roses have announced a fall residency at the Hard Rock Hotel. Motley Crue had a similar nice run earlier this year, and Fremont Street has had their unbelievably successful Rock Of Vegas series of free concerts by well known 80’s hard rock acts. Las Vegas is finally waking up to the fact that the average age of our visitors is 49, not 21. The “thump thump” clubs still make piles of cash, but the average visitor grew up with Def Leppard, not DJ Tiesto.

This is very fitting as Las Vegas (the residents) has always been rock-dominated. Grunge never really took hold here (110 and flannel don’t mix, and it’s tough to be listen to depressing music when it is sunny all the time) and the rockers flocked. Even the popular dance club Shark Club brought touring rock acts in every Wednesday.

Motley Crue’s Vince Neil has lived here for a decade, Quiet Riot’s Kevin Dubrow spent years living here before his untimely death, and the band Slaughter put Las Vegas on the rock map with all four members headquartered here. Slaughter’s drummer Blas Elias actually still performs regularly in the Blue Man Group band. PS Yes, I hung out in those circles in the 90’s and it was as cool as you could imagine.

Drink Up – In our April 18’th edition, we noted that an architectural masonry company here in town takes empty glass bottles from many of our resort hotels and actually uses them in the manufacture of a product called GreenStone. Now, you can feel good about all that beer you’re drinking on your visit! Full story at Henderson entrepreneur recognized for GreenStone building product

Vegas Strip Steak – Step aside, New York strip steak. A group at Oklahoma State University has supposedly found a part of the cow perfect for steak that (until now) was ground into hamburger. It is supposed to be tender and flavorful. We’re not sure about availability yet, as they are attempting to patent the exact cut off the cow with the name Vegas Strip Steak. Pundits are dubious about the ability to patent a cut of meat.

New Home Construction Rising – Applications for new home permits are up, and we’re looking about about 500 new homes starting to hit the market each month. This is the most activity in years. There are benefits to purchasing new. You’re the first one to own the house, you can pick out everything you want from counters to carpet/tile to paint from the get-go (instead of having to do the remodel that I’m looking at), and your home will be up to the latest codes.

In my current 60’s era home, I actually run a heavy-duty extension cord from my kitchen into my rec room because this home was NOT built for multiple computers, monitors, big screen TV’s, modern stereo systems, and all the other great gadgets we now enjoy. If I have the same problem in the house I buy, I’ll be looking at $1000 just on some rewiring. Additionally, this home had been vacant for quite some time and in the first few months, it seems like EVERYTHING went wrong. Plumbing, electrical, water main to the street springing a leak, garbage disposal breaking… I mean everything.

On the flip side, it depends where you want to live. New home construction is on the edge of town. While Las Vegas isn’t L.A., we have rush hour and our share of traffic. Do you fly on a regular basis? Centennial Hills (the far Northwest part of town) is 22 miles from the airport. And almost as far from The Strip (if you are moving here with the thought of enjoying tourism-related amenities). I’m a big fan of being about 10 minutes from everything. For me, central living trumps house repair issues.

One Group Making Over The Town For Women – Longtime favorite Mexican fare hangout Garduno’s at The Palms is going bye-bye to make way for a female-friendly sports bar called Heraea. (At first, the name sounded to me like a medical condition. Some research found that it has roots as both the name of an ancient Greek city and an ancient Greek athletic festival). Once the games are over for the evening, Heraea will turn into a lounge/club vibe with DJ music.

One Group also runs the very popular STK steakhouse at Cosmopolitan and is the company remaking Tropicana’s Nikki Beach into Bagatelle Beach & Nightclub. (Ironically, Bagatelle is going to attempt what Nikki was thought to have done in the first place, creating a cool hangout atmosphere in a city that is otherwise crowded with celeb-fueled nightlife for twenty-somethings). You can read more in the Las Vegas Sun article One Group – Palms sports restaurant Heraea to have a co-ed appeal

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – If you are a long-time reader (and if you are, thanks!), just a note that I hope to be back in the saddle with my sections by the end of summer (maybe sooner). You’ve heard that old adage about “the best laid plans…” and we bit off quite a few new plans over the past few months, bogging us down just a little bit. I’ve been very busy on other projects but really look forward to getting back to contributing here.

Just a reminder, we link to many of the stories that I’d pontificate on in the More section. True, my inside knowledge and comments aren’t there. But you can still click through and read the basic news stories and keep yourself up on what interests you.

We’re adding a new feature this week. We always list all coming concerts and headliners in the right sidebar. But, you don’t know which ones are new without reading through the entire thing. So… we’re also adding a new section with ONLY the performers whose tickets have gone on sale within the past week. That way, you know what is new.

Jabbawockeez by D.W. Grant

Louie Anderson by Terri D’Richards

Louie Anderson: Big Baby Boomer – Welcome to Louie-ville! û where down home mid-western comedy is served up in generous helpings by veteran comic Louie Anderson. A decidedly improvisational twist in AndersonÆs set lends an air of edgy unpredictability. Yet for all that, the comedian always remains firmly grounded in his roots: Minnesota, growing up in a big family (11 children!) with less than perfect parents and, his struggles with food.

The 100-seat venue provides an appropriately intimate setting for LouieÆs low-key, interactive format. Drink prices come in at under Strip price average, and the service is efficient.

Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil by Terri D’Richards

Cirque In Las Vegas, All You Need is LOVE – This super Cirque-adelic Lovefest combines director Dominic ChampagneÆs wildly fanciful interpretations of The Beatles music and history performed to the very best of the beloved bandÆs hit songs. The tracks used in the production represent two years in Abby Road studios for famed Beatles producer George Martin and his son Giles. The team used original master recordings from The Beatles catalog, combined with bits and pieces of songs, alternate vocal takes, and in studio banter.

American Storm by Sarah Jane Woodall

American Storm: No One Is Safe From Their Flirtatious Moves – GirlsÆ Night Out is a classic Vegas tradition. Whether it be a bachelorette party, divorce party, or birthday party û or just because you and your girlfriends feel like getting wild û Vegas is the perfect city in which to unleash your inner bad girl. You wanna drink? WeÆve got bars. You wanna dance? WeÆve got nightclubs. But even more important than either of those… if you wanna ogle some half-naked beefcake, weÆve got you covered there, too!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – For those of you used to reading my column at the beginning of the newsletter, I’ve decided to relocate it down here. Fortunately, we continue to gain subscribers (thanks for telling your friends… and if you haven’t, what’s keeping you?) and while I appreciate that many of you enjoy my Vegas insights, they cover a range from visitor numbers to the real estate market and beyond. Many subjects that have little to do with your next visit. Hence, we’re running the visitor news and reviews first now and I’ll pontificate down here.

Also a quick note: I’ll be on hiatus from the newsletter throughout much of July. We’ve got new hires to bring up to speed, we need to finish development on that amazing money-saving app we’re working on, and get ready to launch our own “Best Of Vegas” contest. All huge undertakings, and there are only so many hours in the day.

It Was Bound To Happen – April marked the first month in a couple of years that visitor volume was down over the same month of the previous year. Before all the Vegas-haters out there start to rejoice and dream of the demise of the city (a la the many hit-piece articles and blogs written during the height of the recession), the decline was microscopic and wholly due to the fact that last April had one more weekend in it then this year did.

Which lends itself to an obvious Vegas tip: In many cities, hotel rooms cost more during the weekday (to bilk the business visitor) and rates are relaxed on the weekend. Las Vegas is exactly the opposite. With the exception of a few really busy convention weeks each year, rates and occupancy for weekdays are much more palatable. Plus, you enjoy a little more elbow room.

Dueling Stadiums – Actually, dueling perhaps isn’t the right word. A developer has put a down payment on his bid for acreage south of the M Resort with the intention of building a stadium. Interestingly enough, the current negative of Sam Boyd Stadium (where UNLV plays football and also the home of concerts, motocross, and similar) is that the location in the far east part of the valley is inconvenient to most residents.

Speaking of UNLV, a stadium on the campus (somewhat centrally located and 1.5 miles east of The Strip) seems to be gaining momentum. Mayor(s) Goodman are still hell-bent on a downtown stadium housing an NBA team. Not to be outdone, Ceasers Entertainment still seems to be pursuing their quest to build an arena behind the Imperial Palace. We’ll keep you posted!

Train To Nowhere Now Going Somewhere – We’ve been reporting on the proposed high-speed train from Las Vegas to Victorville, CA which was supposed to let you transfer to another line going to Palmdale, where it then let you transfer to another line going to Los Angeles (follow the bouncing ball here, people). An agreement has been reached with the intention to run the original line all the way to Palmdale where one would (for now) get on a commuter train to Los Angeles.

The long term plan would be to upgrade the line from Palmdale all the way into Los Angeles so the high speed train could make the run non-stop at greatly increased speeds. Oh, much of the line will be funded by a federal loan (which means, guess who holds the bag if it fails).

Look, this is just “same song, second verse” and these people continue to be as high as a kite (figuratively speaking):

  • The detour over to Palmdale doesn’táappreciably add miles to the trip. BUT, having to change trains (during which time you’re going exactly 0 miles per hour) then taking a commuter train the remaining 60 miles into Los Angeles at normal train speeds is going to go quite a ways to negate the time you saved during the high-speed portion of the trip.

But wait Ted… you noted that the train would eventually be high speed all the way. I don’t think so. Read on…

  • The Palmdale to Los Angeles portion runs through Solidad Canyon. Read that again: CANYON. Even though it is presently used as a major freight and passenger line, the twists and turns of the canyon restrict the speeds which can be obtained. Don’t take my word for it. View these YouTube videos:

While neither train is creeping, they aren’t exactly breaking any speed records through the canyon. And if you look at the scenery and surrounding mountains, you’ll see that routing options are limited.

Add to the fact that high-speed rail requires no railroad crossings (people would be getting splattered left and right as the train would be on them before they see it) which means the cost to elevate this thing all the way through the Los Angeles area is going to turn out sky-high.

Las Vegas’ most juiced-in PR firm is handing this turkey now. Even they are going to have a hard time spinning this one.

New Construction On “The Strip” – – Kind of. A new 20 story timeshare tower is being added to the existing Grandview Resorts complex (which will bring the total number of towers to 8). The location? Next to the South Point, right on Las Vegas Blvd. but 6 miles south of Mandalay Bay. I’d like to consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to Las Vegas, but I’m at a loss on this one. Major projects are stalled all over town, but in a really bad economy people are buying timeshares? In a city where (weeknights) $21 a night will get you a room downtown and $32 on The Strip?

Downtown Housing Set To Grow By Leaps And Bounds – I’ve been asked why we cover housing issues in a Vegas travel newsletter. But believe it or not, quite a few readers either are thinking or at least dreaming of eventually moving here, which makes it good to know where the city is headed. Long-time readers know that I’ve been predicting a residential boom downtown for a couple of years now. Put another one in the proverbial “Ted Was Right” column: A recent article Chances open up for Las Vegas downtown living space highlights the pending downtown residential progression.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Viva Elvis is one of the best shows I have seen in my 20+ years of going to Las Vegas. Now that it is closing, have you heard of any plans to come out with a DVD of the show?

Thanks for a great newsletter, and your help.

Alan Waldauer

Ted Responds:

Cirque du Soleil themselves note: “At the moment there is no DVD of the show Viva ELVIS, nor a documentary of its creation.” With the show closing, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for one. Interestingly enough, the feedback for Viva Elvis has been pretty good from our readers. People who loved the show really loved it.

Unfortunately, the appeal wasn’t as broad as anticipated. It has also been theorized that the Elvis estate didn’t give Cirque the latitude that they had with the Beatles Love, resulting in a show that wasn’t as appealing to general Cirque fans. For those who want a chance to see Viva Elvis before it closes, you have until August 18. Click for Viva Elvis Tickets

We just got back from Vegas! We were there May 30 to June 4. I saw some things I wanted to report. On two occasions I saw cab drivers help out of state drivers who were all turned around. They let in a guy from California who decided to switch to the turning lane at a red light from two lanes over. They let us make a crazy U-turn at Paris when we were trying to find parking for BallyÆs which I now think is the same parking structure. IÆve been thinking of cab drivers as villains since the long hauling reports.

Also I didnÆt find the card slappers to be aggressive. People gave them a wide berth and they didnÆt approach anyone. The medians were pretty and well groomed. They had big orange tiger lilies in them. Not sure what the fight is over strip maintenance. Flamingo needs to do something with their foliage out front. ItÆs overgrown their signage.

Overall we were very pleasantly surprised with conditions on The Strip. We donÆt usually stay over the weekend because of the crowds, but everyone was nice on and off the strip. We were luckier downtown. CanÆt wait to go again! Keep the newsletters coming!

Gina Kasky

Ted Responds:

I’ll take your word for it on the cab drivers. All we know from driving around the tourist areas is that they are generally horrible drivers and very inconsiderate. Just like being in Las Vegas on a rainy day, or hitting a slot jackpot, I guess anything is possible on any given day. Including seeing a nice cabbie!

The pornslappers have had to dial their aggressiveness back a bit according to an agreement they have reached (for now) with the county. I continue to advise visitors to simply not look at them and walk right along on your way. They can’t make any physical contact with you whatsoever (it could be construed as assault) and always end up backing off.

Flamingo owners Caesars Entertainment are well-known for their “deferred” maintenance. A running joke on the internet has been what sad and faded shape the Paris Las Vegas balloon is in when you observe it in the daylight. Now that they are building the new $550 million Project Linq, they’ll have even more space to let get all run down!

No question that Las Vegas is a different beast on the weekend. Weekdays bring value-oriented travelers, often from the mid-west. Weekends bring Californians and those with “fly-in” budgets who have only a couple of days here and want to party-hearty, making the most of it.

Also, the crowds can vary. The weekends just before or after a major holiday like Labor Day are relatively uncrowded and more tame. Also, some are what I call “California” weekends. For some reason, everybody in our neighboring state seems to get the same itch to visit at the same time. All at the last minute. And come Friday night, the town overflows with CA license plates.

We continue to suggest that people take their gambling budgets downtown until The Strip starts offering better paying slots and table game rules. Official Nevada Gaming stats always show that downtown is looser.

Thanks for reading!

This is by far the most informative newsletter out there. I subscribe to two magazines and do not get any information that I can really use. I will be ready and willing to pay for your wonderful newsletter and hard work you do to put this together.

Thanks for the kind words. We do work really hard to put everything together. And while we will be going to a subscriber model, we are prepping additional features that will make it worth it for everyone.
