Hello From Las Vegas! – This was technically a scheduled week off. I have some of those “fun” (and hopefully routine) medical tests one has to take as the calendar starts to show one is edging toward the half-century anniversary of their first ride around the sun. Technically, I do have almost exactly two years to go. But, I might as well knock a few things out now and see how I’m doing while I know what insurance situation I have.

Side Note: Save the emails. That was not a statement in favor or disapproval of Obamacare. As someone who runs their own small company and pays for their own medical and insurance out-of-pocket, I simply have not explored the new options yet.

The closure of Red Rock Canyon (a federal area) has resulted in greatly increased traffic to the spectacular Valley Of Fire area about an hours north of town. It is an area of thousands of acres of blazingly orange, ancient looking landscape and well worth the visit. You can find those tours on our AccessVegas.com Tours Page

We’ll catch back up with you next week with all the usual features, but if you’ve made it this far, you can tell we had a nice assortment of helpful information from Las Vegas this issue about what is happening here in Las Vegas!

Hello From Las Vegas! – Well, we warned our Accessvegas.com Twitter followers of the coming cold snap. We didn’t even hit 70F on Tuesday although we’re going to rebound this weekend and on into next week with seasonable temps in the 70’s. For us desert rats, we’re feeling the chill. For those preparing to fly in from the Pacific Northwest (my original stomping grounds) or Northeast, it will be an improvement.

Changing Of The Guard – While we’re sure this was not our doing, it is interesting that within days of my scathing rebuke of resort upper-management being out-of-touch with the wants and needs of guests — most recently in the “sports bar for women” concept that flopped at The Palms — that resort has a new CEO. Hopefully, he can get the property back to doing what made it a once great, must-see tourist draw.

No More, No Less – Visitorship is pretty much dead-even with last year. Which means with a little surge, we’ll top the 40 million visitor mark for the first time ever this year. Otherwise, we’ll simply fall just short like we did in 2013. Which brings me to…

Tale Of Two Cities – Outside of questions, we get basically two types of reader feedback here. (BTW, we appreciate it and read everything sent to AccessVegas@AccessVegas.com and even if we can’t respond, it does help shape the information we’re working hard to provide you here).

Most of you tell about their visit, what some of the highlights were, how much you enjoyed a particular show or tour and perhaps some of your memorable dining experiences. Even for those somewhat budgeting their vacation, you have a few “must splurge” items and you really enjoy yourself.

However, from time-to-time we get a note that essentially says “Vegas has gotten too expensive and forgotten about the middle class and things aren’t the way they were in the 70’s/80’s/90’s”.

I’d like to address that:

My memories do go back 20+ years here, and I relatively young and broke at the time. It was nice to be able to take $20 downtown and enjoy myself for 2-3 hours (or longer if luck was on my side). 75 cent drinks, Binion’s infamous $1.99 complete steak dinner (and the steak was decent), nickel video poker (real nickels), you name it.

In the late 90’s and on into the 2000, the Travel Channel was full of Vegas specials documenting everything from how lavish of an experience you could have to doing coupon runs where some time and effort could save you big or make you some money.

I get it. I lived it also.

Then, we had a few things converge:

1. The properties decided that pretty much giving away food was a loss-leader that might not be justifiable. The hope was that people would gamble to make up for it. But the reality is that slowly but surely, gaming revenue has become less and less of the overall revenue. If your strategy is to get people in the door with cheap food and fewer of those people gamble, all of a sudden that strategy makes less sense.

2. Inflation. Enough said. Look at what gas cost in years gone by. When I was young, I remember the horror of it hitting $1.00 a gallon! That $1.99 you so fondly remember late-night breakfast is in 1993 pricing.

3. Las Vegas still has tons of specials. We list the ones we come across on a regular basis. Why don’t we provide some master list? They are incredibly subject to change and even finding them would mean making a zillion phone calls each month to keep up. Hey, if one of you wants to volunteer to call every restaurant and bar in Las Vegas every month…

But as we suggested in Member’s Mania last week, keep your eyes peeled and more importantly, ASK. Don’t sit down at a bar without asking if they have any drink specials, both at the time you are there or at another time of the day. Walking by a restaurant that catches you eye? Ask if they have any specials happening. Ask if they have a happy hour.

As we noted, many of these restaurants are not owned by the casinos they are in. Hence, they don’t have to try to screw every cent out of you to pay off their debt load!

4. Finally, as much as people complain, no one seems to be able to tell me where vacationing is a better deal (short of putting up a tent in a national park, which you can’t do right now anyway do to our government shutdown). Have you priced hotels in San Francisco or Miami? Go look at what a Disneyworld vacation costs!

5. Airfare is a common complaint. Look, complain to the airlines or oil companies. (The reality is that the airlines often only make a few bucks per flight off of each passenger after their costs are figured in). Unless you are going to drive on your vacation — which is affected by the price of gas — it is going to cost to fly anywhere. That is simply the price of a vacation.

At the end of the day, if you choose to come mid-week and not when a big event or convention is in town, you can still get a room here for less than what a roadside Motel 6 is going to cost you somewhere. Which should leave you enough of a vacation budget to enjoy yourself.

In the meantime and despite a bad economy, we’re still nudging up against a record number of visitors. People are flocking to Caesars $50 buffet (the lines are crazy). People continue to go to our great shows and are willing to pay for the kind of top-notch entertainment that you won’t find anywhere else except many New York (where hotel prices are far higher). 

We’re gaining more and more international visitors who come over and really do Vegas all the way, seeing the Grand Canyon, taking in 2-3 shows, hitting some of the top restaurants.

So at the end of the day, I want to let you budget travelers know that we hear you and within our budget as a free publication, we do try to list various specials and deals. However, we absolutely do also want to cater to the visitor who — just like they did over the decades — wants to come to Las Vegas for some of the finest experiences of their life

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

We were in your beautiful and exciting city in May, which is our usual time for our visit. Then, we took an extra visit on Sept 1’st until Sept. 6’th. My husband said I shouldn’t read your letter so much, then I wouldn’t want to go so often.

It was hot, but I love hot weather. We did the open double decker tour bus, we have did that a few times, the tour guides are great. This time we stopped at the Atomic Testing Museum. It was great and spent a little bit of time in the Area 51 exhibit.

I just love taking the Deuce, we did a complete round trip from the Golden Nugget to the opposite strip and back. We stopped at the Tropicana, it has been a few years since we have been there. What a Beautiful Place.

We decided to see the The Mob Attraction, it was good, but I prefer the Mob Museum downtown. I am a Righteous Brothers fan from way back, so we went to the South Point Hotel and saw Bill Medley and his daughter McKenna. It was a great show.

Just to get away, we took a drive to Laughlin, being that it was nice a warm, it was nice to walk along the water. I will be looking for your next letter, I can’t believe the information you pack in there.

Ted Responds;

Well, if we’re getting you to consider visiting more often, I guess we are doing it right! I do really enjoy hearing how people came and had such a good time. I’m a fun-loving person myself and with boundless activities and attractions, we’re happy to have something for everyone;

I’m with you on the September weather (which is almost identical to May weather). Hot days in the 90’s without becoming unbearable, then beautiful evenings and warm breezes into the late night.

We’ve noted this before, but it is worth repeating: The Deuce (our double-decker public bus system which runs the length of The Strip and to downtown) is an extra great ride if you get on way down by Tropicana or downtown so you have great odds of getting a front row (or nearly front row) seat on the upper level. You can watch the Strip glide by with a bird’s-eye view.

The Mob Experience at Tropicana is moving on (no new location announced yet so we’re not holding our breath). But as is a common theme, everybody LOVES the Mob Museum downtown. It is incredibly well done, and I’ve yet to talk to someone who didn’t have 2 hours (or more) just fly by while there were in there. With the old Lady Luck (now Downtown Grand) as the next door neighbor to the museum officially opening in a month, you have a couple of great reasons to make the downtown trek at some time during your trip.

While not our focus, we’re thinking about seeing if we can find a writer to do Laughlin for 2-3 days and give us a really complete report. For those that don’t mind the 90 minute drive, the ability to gamble while looking out at the mountains and beautiful Colorado River is unparalleled. And if luck isn’t treating you very well, you can stretch your legs with a river-front stroll!

Fall Into Autumn At Bellagio’s Conservatory And Botanical Gardens – With outdoor temperatures cooling off, foliage across the country taking on majestic tones and the holidays just around the corner, autumn is the favorite season of the year for many. Hello From Las Vegas! – October is already here, and generally is the very nicest month of the year in the our Las Vegas. Never too hot, never too cold, plenty of sunshine, very little wind, and it just so happens to be my birthday month to boot. (Not that I look forward to them as much as I once did). If you have a trip planned for the next few weeks, lucky you!

Smile For The Camera – Our Metro police department has recently installed 37 high-tech cameras up and down The Strip. Surveillance will be used to look for any potential problems, or be used to go back to in helping solve crimes. Footage will be kept for 14 days. While a few are worried about invasion of privacy, the reality is that in a public area all bets are off. You’ve probably been captured completely by accident in quite few photos and videos just taken by visitors on a previous visit.

Bruno Mars Residency – Hot on the heels of the big Britney Spears announcement, pop superstar Bruno Mars is taking up a residency show at the Cosmopolitan. Although not quite as ambitious as Britney’s two-year run, it is part of a trend to see if acts appealing to a younger demographic can have the draw like Elton, Celine, and similar have had in Las Vegas over the years. Tickets for the New Years shows are now available and we’ll let you know when the next set of shows are planned:

Correction? – We recently noted that many sources were claiming poor sales of Britney Spears tickets for her two year engagement. Caesars Entertainment and Britney Spears’ manager have both noted that tickets for her upcoming run are better-than-expected. Time will tell!

Screwing Up A Good Thing – I’m thinking of starting a regular feature called “Management Mishaps” or similar. Over the years, I’ve rolled my eyes countless times at decisions hotel casino upper management make that seem to show how completely out-of-touch they are with the rank-and-file patron.

The most recent “oops” was Heraea at The Palms. For years and years, The Palms had a very popular Mexican restaurant called Gardunos. Everyone love it. By all accounts, it did well. Obviously, we can’t have any of that going on! So, someone came up with the bright idea to gut the space and put in a female-friendly sports bar called Heraea which morphed into a lounge/nightclub space later in the evening. Huh?

This was wrong on so many levels:

  • While more and more women are watching (and betting on) football, sports viewing still skews heavily male.
  • Straight men are not particularly fond of more feminine spaces. In fact, the entire “man cave” phenomenon has sprung up as everything around us has become more feminized. (The notion being that women tend to make the purchasing decisions and thus need to be properly targeted). Men want to watch sports in a manly setting and by golly, if the little ladies want to watch it to, they can deal with a manly setting. Like in most sports bars.
  • Pursuant to the above, your average guy who wants to watch football in Las Vegas is more towards middle-age, has a few extra pounds, and is probably wearing a sports jersey. This isn’t exactly the kind of person who will stick around as a “sports bar” turns into a nightlife setting. And the younger guys? They are going to go hit a real club.

Heraea lasted only 7 months and in fact closed just a month into football season. No word on the fate of the brain trust that put this one together.

So, I’m turning 40 Nov 20 and am coming to Vegas for the 1st time. I can’t wait and am making plans that I have been reviewing for months, & am hoping you can assist with some things I wish to complete!

First, I want champagne experience on a beer budget!

I need a great hair salon. Not that I’m High Maintenance, but nobody has cut my hair except mom since 1983. She passed in 2011, So I’m kinda timid, & also want to donate my Hair to a charity that makes wigs for people who need them. So a great stylist would be awesome!

We (my significant other and I) aren’t big gamblers and really want to see the city and historical places.

Your first trip… wow! Just don’t be too overwhelmed once you get here, and realize from day one that it would take 30 days to do and see everything. Hence, try to get to what you really want to do, allow plenty of time to just go with the flow (casinos don’t have clocks), and realize that you’ll be back plenty of times to have new experiences.

Also, don’t worry. 40 isn’t the end of the world. I celebrated my 40’th in Las Vegas also (duh) and that was nearly 8 years ago. The average visitor is 49 but we get visitors from kids to seasoned seniors!

For a champagne experience on a beer budget, make sure you’ve been keeping an eye on the various food and drink specials we list in most every issue of this newsletter. Call ahead to make sure they are still valid. If there is a restaurant that catches your eye, walk up and ask if they have any current specials or any prix fixe dinners.

Also, MANY restaurants in the hotels have some kind of happy hour. Not all, but many. (We’d list them all, but they are subject to change and keeping up would be next-to-impossible). If you are thinking of dinner around 5-6 PM, start hitting a few of them and ask them if they have a happy hour and what is offered.

You may find that a very nice restaurant is doing some great 1/2 price appetizers and drinks (or similar). If you are willing to sit at the bar, you can order 2-3 appetizers (for a couple of people) and each have a drink and experience a very nice environment without busting your budget.

Also, a great rule of thumb that we learned from our friends at Pub Crawl áis when you go to a restaurant or bar here — like if you absolutely want to do Margaritaville or Cabo Wabo or Mesa or Spago — do not be afraid to ask your server or bartender if there are any food or drink specials going on. They don’t always advertise them with flashing lights!

As you are finding out, it never hurts to ask. What do you care? You are on vacation!

And for cheap-to-reasonably priced drinks 24/7, Casino Royale is right in the center of The Strip.

If you are OK splurging on the salon, you can’t go wrong with Color at Caesars. It is a Michael Boychuck salon and counts entertainers and movers and shakers as clientele. Boychuck came to fame as a colorist for celebrities back in the day, including doing Paris Hilton’s hair pretty much forever.

You can call them at (866) 730-7791 for details on pricing, services, and an appointment. In fact, if you are shedding long locks for a good cause, here’s what I would do: Call them ahead of time, tell them that you are coming in for your 40’th birthday, and tell them your story and intentions. One never knows as they may do something to make it a special experience. Honestly, sounds like a good PR story to me.

Gambling is no longer the top reason that everybody comes to town. You’ll want to try your luck, but there is so much to do and see and enjoy. So, don’t worry about that. Besides, if you really want to gamble, you can do that where you (in particular) live now.

Since you are interested in the historical:

1. Go downtown for an evening (preferably not a weekend evening when it is really crowded). Walk the entire Fremont Street Experience and keep walking a couple of extra blocks to the El Cortez, a great working hotel casino on the national registration of historic places. This whole area was the “original” Las Vegas before The Strip existed.

2. Go enjoy the mob museum, but give yourself a couple of hours if you really want to absorb it. Three floors of very interactive exhibits. If you do, go downtown mid-afternoon to do it. Then eat dinner downtown and enjoy Fremont Street.

Nothing much happens mornings here anyway (unless you want to gamble your brains out or sleep off a hangover). Hoover Dam is spectacular. Pictures simply don’t even come close to doing it justice. And, it is incredibly historic. The tour takes you through the 1930’s architecture and the photo opportunities (both of the dam and surrounding areas) are limitless.

While at this time we’re unfortunately able to offer this much in-depth help to each and ever reader at this time (we will for paid subscribers down the road), we’re always excited to hear someone planning their very first trip!

Hello From Las Vegas! – Well, for those of you who avoid visiting during our scorching-hot summers, the coast is clear (at least until about May of 2014). Our 10 day forecast has highs in the 70’s and 80’s F. October’s average high is only 81, with it falling off quickly in November (67) and December (57). Also, keep in mind that those are highs. During the day, 65 with plentiful sun feels great! But here in the Mojave desert, it drops quickly at night. Pack accordingly.

Locals Casinos – Many of our readers rent a car and stay at various “locals” properties around town. I want to point out that this is absolutely NOT something we suggest unless/until you have visited numerous times and taken the time to check out some of these properties so that you know they are right for you. The upside? Easy and generous comps. The recession isn’t over here in Southern Nevada and these properties need business.

My suggestion? Take the free shuttle to the Orleans, M, or Sam’s Town (call each property for details) and give them some play. You’ll be downright surprised/shocked at how great the offers are that start to show up in your mailbox.

But for you first-timers who are just studying up or those who have only visited a few times (or only come for a week once a year), focus on The Strip with a non-weekend evening foray into the downtown Fremont Street Experience. Downtown is very competitive and the gaming odds and food specials are somewhat comparable to “locals” properties.

Why avoid downtown on weekends now (if you can)? Fremont Street and Fremont East have gotten so popular, that you’re dealing with some serious crowds, packed tables, and many of the video poker bars are pretty much completely full. In addition, downtown is the home of events like First Friday. Plus, more and more big-name concerts and TV events that really clog up the area. Visit downtown during weeknights (and earlier in the week if possible) and you’ll be able to enjoy it with some elbow room.

Just read your article on Britney Spears and her deal with Planet Hollywood. I can’t believe anyone would pay her so much to lypsinc her recordings. Every time I’ve seen her perform on TV, she doesn’t sing live, just lyp syncs.

Anyone who has a halfway decent voice can have their voices enhanced and then backed up by background singers and sound very professional. Given her past exploits, is she really to be relied upon to fulfill her obligations??

Good notes and questions.

I confess that Britney isn’t my taste in music (which ranges from the 80’s pop-metal which I grew up with to both traditional and smooth jazz depending on my mood). However, I’m obviously familiar with her hits, her antics (including a quickie Vegas marriage and shaving her head) and all the rest. And yes, I have seen her perform on TV a number of times, which did seem to involve lip-synching.

For those wondering: Lip-synching is when an artist pretends to sing while the vocals are actually pre-recorded. This is often done by performers who do a very physically active show with lots of dancing, leaving them a little too breathless to sing properly. It is also done with artists whose voices are “doctored” in the studio and who simply are not the best live singers.

Legal disclaimer: We’re not saying that either specifically applies to Spears.

For the record, couple of recent articles indicated that Britney has been in vocal training and will be doing live singing.

Will Britney be able to hold it together and not miss any performances? Will her fan base turn out over the course of 100 shows over two years (hoping to fill around 4500 seats for each show)? As we’ve noted, her demographics somewhat fall in between traditional show-goers and the club crowd. This is a group of fans who grew up with dance-enhanced concerts and should enjoy the show.

If she’s successful, will she put a hurt on club attendance (which some note is waning a bit), or will people see her show then head straight for a club?

We have read recent reports that ticket sales are below expectations early on. But she may draw a nice walk-up crowd as the younger demographic living in neighboring states are know to just pack up and come here on a whim (as opposed to planning their trip ahead of time, buying show and concert tickets well in advance to get good seats, etc).

Lots of questions. We’ll watch it unfold. Caesars Entertainment has quite a bit riding on The Linq, Britney, and their Gansevoort (Bill’s/Barbary Coast) projects. None of which really seem aimed at the traditional Las Vegas visitor.

Hello From Las Vegas! – September is flying by. Temperate weather is coming our way. By temperate, we look to be in the 80’s next week. This will sound crazy to some of you, but many locals I know (including myself) start to get a little nostalgic for summer once it starts to slip away. A couple more months and we’ll have to start figuring out which closets our jackets and sweaters are in before we go hit Fremont Street.

As someone who lives in short-sleeves, shorts, and flip-flops — nice ones, not the 2 for $3.99 drugstore variety — much of the year, I’ll have to dig out my long pants. I’m down nearly 20 pounds since May 1 (and dearly missing my buffet ventures, but it is worth it). So, I’m looking forward to wearing some winter clothes that have been dormant for the past few years, and donating the “too big” stuff to charity.

Britney – Well, if you poke your head into a newspaper, TV morning shows, or have simply been awake the past few days, you may know that Britney Spears finally announced her 2 year run here. Want tickets? Check out Britney Spears Las Vegas Tickets. Her reported take per show? $310,000, although it isn’t known if that also has to cover dancers and any musicians. We have a video promo of the announcement in our What We’re Watching segment.

What we’re going to be watching unfold? To date, the thought has been that people under 40 are not as likely to attend live shows, including Celine, Elton, and similar. They prefer the clubs and DJ’s. On the flip side, has Las Vegas simply not been offering headliners who appeal to a younger demographic?

The club scene is pretty much maxed out, with the number of venues hitting the limit of the numbers of patrons. Las Vegas is continually looking to cater to new audiences, and some of the club people who grew up with Britney may be looking for new things to do. Also, her show is said to try to have a club vibe to it. Everyone is watching how this one will turn out!

We were in Las Vegas in early June…we were going down the strip when we saw something being filmed…. the couple was in a 1968 or 69 red Ford convertible. It was very neat to see something being filmed right there on the strip but now we have been curious as to what it was for. Do you know if it was a movie or what? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was downtown late into the evening when they were shooting Ma$e’s “Feel’s So Good” video (which ended up getting tons of MTV play). Even if it isn’t your type of music, fun to see downtown.

I was at the old Klondike when they were setting up to film Vegas Vacation later in the evening. (I didn’t stick around as I didn’t have an entire overnight to devote to catching a few scenes).

I’ve seen car commercials and plenty of other similar productions just by happenstance. Some people made it a mission to seek out Hangover III production spots.

As you can imagine, news of these shoots is generally NOT released to the public as they like to avoid crowds. When it is, they do it on short notice and only put out a note saying they need people for crowd scenes. Your best bet is to keep your eyes open when you watch TV and make sure to go see (or Netflix) movies that are shot in Las Vegas.

Hi, just visited Las Vegas and had a fabulous time. We were a party of four and ate in many places during our stay. We were particularly looking forward to sampling the food at Gordon Ramsay’s Bar and Grill. I had beef cheeks which were very tasty and the remaining three had fish and chips.

The fish and chip meals were disappointing. The chips were soggy and the batter on one guest’s piece of fish was so salty he could not eat it. Unfortunately he did not stay until we left otherwise I would have commented to our server.

The service was good and the staff seemed knowledgeable about the food they were serving. The complimentary breads and dips were tasty and a nice touch.

We thought the menu was limited and some of the choices were expensive as were the drinks.

All in all we had much better meals during our stay particularly the ones we had a Wolfgang Puck’s and unfortunately feel that we could not recommend Gordon Ramsay’s Bar and Grill.

We’ve always been fans of Wolfgang Puck properties and he took the time to give us a great interview a number of years ago. Considering as a UK resident you were not impressed by the fish and chips, it sounds like their work is cut out for them.

No question that you are paying for both the Caesars location and the celeb chef name. But, one should expect the food to match the price.

Hello From Las Vegas! – Monsoon season won’t let up, and The Strip (plus those of us who live near it) got absolutely pounded by rain recently. A big storm in a long line of days with clouds and occasional showers. Certainly not our normal weather! If there is an upside, it has taken the bite off of the heat. Evenings have been rain free with unusually comfortable temperatures in the 70’s F.

The Linq-Mobile Cometh – Staffer Rick Ziegler caught these photos of the Linq project’s “High Roller” wheel (AKA The Linq-Mobile) just a couple of days ago. Ironically, just before the circumference of the wheel was completed and parent company Caesars Entertainment blasted the media with the news.

It will be the tallest of its kind in the world when it opens, but we’re obviously still a ways away from that (we’ll keep you updated as always). Pods — each holding up to 40 riders — still have to be brought to the site and attached. The enclosed ride will take about 30 minutes and the ride is projected to cost $30.

Our concern? From our calculations (and what we can see now), your view of The Strip will be obstructed during about half the ride by the hotels it sits behind. The view from the top should be pretty cool, though.

It appears that the Linq project will have a mix of upscale shopping along with a fair amount of dining and a hipster bowling alley which will also host big-name concerts. I believe it will be a bellwether regarding whether dining and shopping is more the future of Las Vegas now that gambling is legal in so many areas.

Closing Time? – I’m getting ready to close on a great mid-century home located toward the center of the Las Vegas valley (knock on wood). I like the charm of some of our older neighborhoods and the proximity of both The Strip and Downtown. Wish me luck.

My wife and I made our first visit to Las Vegas in 1965 on our way to Sacramento where I began my Air Force career at Mather AFB. Since then we have made many trips back and in the last few years have been staying in town longer and longer. We are beginning our annual journey next week and will be in Las Vegas for 30 days staying at several different casinos (4 Queens, Main Street Station, Rio, Flamingo, The Quad, and Silver Sevens) with all rooms comped.

We are not high rollers, but with players cards have managed to get the summer offers for many years. We each get offers so we are able to stay for such an extended time by moving around. This year we are even entered in 5 separate slot tournaments, compliments of the casinos.

We retired for good back in 2006 and have been traveling ever since. We do a lot of cruises because they are a great way to see the world at an affordable price and while on them we completely relax without a care in the world. Las Vegas is our cruise in the desert, and we get the same sense of relaxation without a worry in the world. We love your newsletter, and find it to be the most informative source of information about what is going on in Las Vegas.

What a great story and thanks for sharing. In this issue (as we’ve done off and on over the past few months), we’re included a link to a video of Las Vegas from the past.

We have a fair amount of readers who do come for 2, 3, or even four weeks at a time just like you. Those who just come for a few days, hit it hard, and practically go home in a body bag probably wonder how one can spend weeks at a time here. But, it allows you to enjoy pacing yourself because you are not under the pressure to do everything in such a short amount of time. You can get out and enjoy the “local’s” casinos where the odds are better and the food is cheaper.

We often hear from people who enjoy getting down to Laughlin, where you can gamble with a view of the beautiful Colorado River (and winter temps in the 70’s F). Or take the time to do a tour (or two or three). Enjoy a show or two every week instead of having to just pick one out of a town with such a great menu of live entertainment.

Here’s to many great Las Vegas vacations in your future!

Hello From Las Vegas! – I’ve been off for about 10 days house-hunting. This is a very tight, fickle market here right now (which I’ll discuss in future issues). So, just a few brief notes from me and we’ll get this issue out. Fortunately, it is super-packed with all the helpful information you need to get your fix of Vegas, keep up on what is going on, and help you consider what you want to do on your next visit.

We posted on our Access Vegas Twitter page last week that we may have seen the end of the 100 F degree days. We may sneak just into the triple digits for a few more days, but September’s average is 94 F so even if we go a little higher, the super-scorching days are coming to an end.

ALSO, keep in mind that sunset is around 7:30 PM here right now. (We sit on the very eastern edge of our time zone, so we always get earlier sunsets than most places). If you are thinking about watching the sun set and The Strip light up from the top of the Stratosphere Tower or the Paris Las Vegas Eiffel Tower, arrange to have yourself up there by 7 PM. Highly recommended, especially from Stratosphere. Worth the cab ride to catch sunset from up there!

Football Bars – As promised, here is the link to the list of all the NFL teams who have local bars devoting themselves exclusively to that team. This means they show every single game, showing it on every single one of their TV’s, and also offer food and drink specials. Is this for the average tourist? Probably not. The cab ride could run you a bit and obviously, the casinos have all games that are live on multiple TV’s.

However, if you are the kind of visitor who rents a car, gets out and about, checks out the off-strip casinos (plus Hoover Dam, Red Rock and similar), you might find hunting down a bar for your team tons of fun! Hello From Las Vegas! – Wow, Labor Day is just around the corner, and many of you in the cooler climates will be kissing the warm weather goodbye and settling into fall. For us here in Las Vegas, we’re looking forward to our second “summer” of the year. September averages 94 F, October 81 (which many would consider perfect), and November drops down to 67 (chilly for us desert rats, but perfect for many).

I like to suggest an early November vacation to those of you who live where it is getting pretty cold and cloudy in your neck of the woods and ready to still get a dose of warmth and sunshine. Not to mention for you sports fans, football season and betting is in full swing!

Beginning Of The Club Scene Decline – Buried at the end of a local newspaper column by Doug Elfman, he noted that he’s heard some of these famous club DJ’s aren’t packing the house lately. While clubs will never go away, are we seeing a crack in this trend which has taken over Las Vegas the past 10 years or so? Are we going to see a return to more live music? Is Las Vegas going to start realizing that the AVERAGE age of our visitors is nearly 50 years old?

Trains Going Nowhere – The Las Vegas to Victorville (or Palmdale, CA) high speed train that was to be funded by a multi-billion dollar federal government loan guarantee looks to be derailed. A few Senators sobered up long enough to realize how completely ridiculous this concept was and what a long-shot it would be for the train to make enough to pay off the federal loan. Nevada Senator Harry Reid is a big backer of the project and claims it isn’t dead.

In the meantime, the XTrain (a conventional, luxury train running from Los Angeles to Las Vegas) seems to have delay after delay after delay. Which is unfortunate, as we’re fans of that one. If the XTrain doesn’t get off the ground, here’s an idea for Reid: How about taking a tiny fraction of the “Train To Nowhere” money and re-starting Amtrak service between L.A. and Las Vegas to see if it flies. We have the most powerful Senator in the U.S. and is home city doesn’t even have Amtrak service. Try it for a year and see if it breaks even (or makes money). You can always kill it if it fails. If we want to really look toward the future of high-speed ground transportation…

Hyperlooping To Vegas – Revolutionary car designer Elon Musk (he created that all-electric Tesla that ended up being the car of the year last year) has made plans available for a high-speed tube that would take people from L.A. to San Francisco in 30 minutes, with extensions visioned to Las Vegas. For those of you old enough, think about those air-powered tubes banks had (or maybe still have) to get your documents from outside into the teller. We love the idea. But funding and construction probably makes it a couple of decades off.

It would open up a whole new world to Vegas visitors. We’re sometimes asked about day trips to Hollywood or Disneyland by people who don’t realize how great distances are here in the Western U.S. (Southern California is a 1/2 day drive away, making a day trip over there unworkable). This would made that day trip workable, and give us Las Vegas locals a chance to do a day at the beach!

Ted, You wrote about the major hotels losing money and I am again just perplexed at this. Why if they are losing money don’t they cater more to the average (poorer smuck) like me and my friends???

We all started going there in the early 90’s during that boom. We would go once or twice a year, every year. Hotels were fun, themed and it was always an allure to go see the next ‘new’ place. Now its all boutique hotels with most of the emphasis on high end shopping, high end night clubs, high end dinning, high end everything.

Now me and most of my friends don’t bother going as Vegas has changed so much, we don’t feel real welcomed there.

How many millions (or billions) of dollars is Las Vegas not earning now that they have crowded us out?? We go now to Indian run casinos where we can find cheap loose slots, lower limit table games and food that we can afford to eat. I miss the old Las Vegas.

And for kids and strollers in Las Vegas, we did that two years ago to show my kids where we got married and it was fun for about a day and half. Then we ran out of kid friendly things to do. But we kept them out of the way, out of casinos, other than to get to our room and a restaurant. It can work, but just for a short time frame.

Please don’t shoot the messenger with this answer. For better or worse, I’m just telling you the way that it is.

Like many American companies, the hotels are now run by bean counters who are trying to maximize stock prices. The vision is generally about the short term. They are also saddled by debt from money borrowed and spent during the boom that didn’t pay off when things went bust. They are riding the fine line of squeezing every penny they can out of everything they possibly can just to stay afloat (in some cases).

I believe this is one reason visitation is flat year-over-year so far. (Granted, we were just shy of a new record last year). When you come and book a $49 room then get hit with high food prices, high drink prices, and (for many) an unexpected resort fee, that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I also believe that the de-theming is playing a role. Las Vegas has lost some of that magical “Adult Disneyland” feel and I’m not sure why this is lost on the upper management making these decisions.

People are rebelling. They still come, but they buy a cheap cooler when they get here, keep it stocked with beer in their room, buy bottles of liquor to keep in their room, keep a bunch of snack and easy-to-prepare food on hand, and order out. (Hint: Pizza Hut will deliver to your hotel in Las Vegas. You do need to meet the driver at a designated place and have your credit card and ID on you). Eat and booze in your room some of the time, and Las Vegas just got a whole lot cheaper. Use the money you save to go enjoy a show!

Your area Michigan casinos (in many cases) are not riding a mountain of debt. ALSO, in many cases, you are a captive audience. You drove an hour to get there. If you lose a quick $100, are you just going to turn around and drive home? Probably not. Is there the Fountains of Bellagio to go enjoy while you hope your luck turns? No. When you combine the captive gaming audience and less debt, you can offer better prices and odds.

We are looking forward to the Resorts World casino opening in a couple years on the old Stardust property. The owners know what they are doing. They are going for the middle of the market and doing an intense Asian theme. If they are successful, maybe some of their neighbors will take notice. Just as the “family friendly” era of Las Vegas is looked back upon as a mistake, we believe that the recent era of de-theming and tighter gambling odds will one day be looked upon as a mistake.

Speaking of family friendly, I did note that there are some instances where you have to bring a child to Las Vegas. It works if you are responsible and put the child’s interests above your own. Otherwise, save it for their 21’st birthday!

Hello From Las Vegas! – The wacky weather (record highs, thunderstorms, power outages, casinos flooding) seems to be a thing of the past, and we’re settling in for average the next couple of weeks. Highs around 105 F with the overnight low around 80. Still a bit too toasty for some, but I personally prefer it to the chilly, short days of winter.

The Biggest Loser – Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts, and The Cosmopolitan all posted second-quarter losses. Caesars Entertainment lost $212.2 million, MGM Resorts tanked $145.5 million, and the Cosmo (which is basically a foreclosed on, bank-owned property) lost just a little over $25 million — about $280,000 per DAY. On one property! That amount will buy you a 3000 sq. ft. home in a nice Las Vegas neighborhood.

What does that mean to you? At the end of the day, these companies are most likely going to hold the line on tighter slots, bad blackjack rules, and expensive drinks. They literally don’t have a choice. It is interesting to see that many of the food and drink specials we publish are in the restaurants inside properties. Restaurants which operate independently of the hotel and are able to establish their own prices without regards to zillions of dollars of debt to service.

Will the house of cards fall down for any of these companies? MGM Resorts should do fine in the long run. Although they won’t be building another CityCenter anytime soon (which they have the land to do so across from The Sahara). The bank that owns Cosmo can eat the loss until they resort is worth enough to sell. Caesars Entertainment? Some conjecture that their debt is not sustainable. They appear to be banking (no pun intended) on online gambling, which they seem to have a nice stake in. If that doesn’t happen, could we see them selling off some of their Las Vegas hotels (the way that MGM Resorts sold off Treasure Island a few years ago)? Speaking of…

Retail Will Not “Save” Las Vegas – Treasure Island just got plans approved to rip out their corner facade and put in retail (see above and below). The pirate show will stay, but the ship won’t move as far away from the bay (as it won’t have anywhere to go). This comes on the heels of Monte Carlo destroying the beautiful facade of their property for more retail and dining. And of Treasure Island essentially marring the front of their hotel with that horrible looking red restaurant.

Look, I’m no math major. But to me, the numbers just don’t add up. Visitation is flat and each visitor only has so much to spend. If you divide that disposable income by (for example) 1500 shops, bars, and restaurants instead of 1000, each venue will bring in less money. So what does this mean for you? More competition = more deals!

No Pot Soon – Organizers are going to wait until 2016 to attempt to put a measure to legalize marijuana on the ballot here in Nevada. They cite the time needed to organize and fund the petition drive.

Stop The Strollers! – An incredibly disturbing trend the past couple of years (especially) is seeing parents pushing strollers and dragging young children around into the later hours of the night. Listen… I realize that some people have legitimate reasons to bring children to Las Vegas. Perhaps the husband is attending a convention and the wife and young child come along for the price of airfare. He works during the day while she sees the sites pushing the child around. But any responsible parent is going to be back in their room with milk and cookies before the evening gets late.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case. For some reason, many people are thinking that a Vegas vacation with their young (and very young) children is going to be something resembling fun. The reality is that these are usually the most miserable looking people that you’ll see out. They aren’t having any fun. They can’t just hit the bar for a drink, then start gambling when the mood hits. And I have to assume that a vacation with the parents and young kids all sharing a room isn’t going to exactly be the most romantic getaway the couple has ever had.

If your children aren’t old enough where you are comfortable with them being on their own in a vacation city, they are simply too young to bring to Las Vegas. Let alone shoving them around in a stroller at midnight.

What We’re Watching – Vegas Videos You’ll Enjoy

  • Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme sing, “This Could Be The Start Of Something Big” – With the passing of Las Vegas’ beloved iconic performer Eydie Gorme at the age of 84, and the continue requests we receive from readers wondering where they can still see traditional lounge music (pretty much nowhere, casinos consider it too expensive), we pulled up a couple videos of the same song: This Could Be The Start Of Something Big.
  • Noreen’s Lounge: Home of the Steeler Nation – With such an influx of people moving here from all over the United States and the absence of our own NFL team, each year numerous bars across Las Vegas devote themselves ENTIRELY to one football team for the season. While the “home team” is on TV, ALL of the TV’s are tuned to that one game, food and drink specials abound, and team devotees enjoy the camaraderie of their former city-mates (and those who just simply happen to follow the team as their favorite).

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

I recently visited Las Vegas for my 50th birthday. I stayed at the Cosmopolitan. Very nice and no problems. However, My family and I saw the Criss Angel Show Believe…What a disappointment. For $100 and more, what a let down. He talks for about 20 minutes about how he struggled to make it and then puts on a sub-level show. You feel like he is just winging it and really doesn’t care.

What a rip off. It’s amazing that he goes on about being the best magician but his show was not good at all. He has a midget go around with a fake penis and doesn’t he realize that there are children in the audience.

Unprofessional. So disappointed. $600 down the tube. What an embarrassment.

You aren’t the first (or last) person who can’t “believe” that this show has lasted this long. While Criss Angel fans really enjoy the show, over and over I’ve read comments from everyone else. Who didn’t.

Thanks for the kind words. We’ll start to release more membership details and answer related questions over the next few weeks. (We’re a bit behind as I’m house hunting, which is always a pesky little distraction. My lease is up in a couple of months, although I will note that my trial-run of living close-in to The Strip has been favorable).

For those who loved the old Lady Luck, you’re not going to recognize it after this renovation is done. The Downtown Grand is shaping up to be the class of Las Vegas. We’re heard talk of innovative dining, and in the next week or two will run a video previewing their signature restaurant Stewart and Ogden (the streets the property sits on, and two historical Las Vegas characters). All in all, you’ll have your choice of 8 bars and lounges, and 11 restaurants. A pretty aggressive line-up!

They will also have a pool deck on the casino roof (open to the public, from what we understand, but don’t quote us on that) and outdoor blackjack along 3’rd Street. The entire area has been dubbed DT3 (for Downtown Third).

An opening date hasn’t officially been announced, but mid-October seems to be the consensus rumor. We’ll obviously be down when it opens, bring you our thoughts, and plenty of photos!

KGB: KerryÆs Gourmet Burgers Introduces Tasty Monthly Burger and Shake Combos – KGB: KerryÆs Gourmet Burgers at HarrahÆs Las Vegas offers new monthly burger and shake combos available now through the end of the year. Presenting diners with fresh menu items to try at every turn of the calendar, each flavorful burger and shake creation, crafted by Chef Kerry Simon, is only available for its designated month. Ordered separately, the burgers are $14 and the shakes are $6, while the burger and shake of the month combo is $18.

The delicious creations for October 2013 are the Philly cheesesteak burger and strawberry banana milkshake. Topped with American cheese, peppers, onions, mushrooms and smothered with white cheddar cheese sauce, the thinly-sliced grilled steak is served on a white bun. Alongside the Philly cheesesteak is the strawberry banana milkshake made with homemade strawberry banana ice cream, whipped cream and strawberries.

Pageantry, Fireworks, And Knights On Horseback – Tournament of Kings – Hear Ye! Hear Ye! û come one, come all to “Tournament of Kings” at the Excalibur — a throwback to the more themed era on the Las Vegas Strip. While newer properties have abandoned the Disney-like themes of their predecessors, and many of those existing previously have re-branded themselves, the Excalibur Hotel Casino retains its full on Medieval fantasy motif.

There is nothing else like it out there and we’re going to guarantee it will save you at least the cost.

We have some other cool new things we’re keeping under our hat for now, one of which will help you get the most bang for your buck when it comes to the dreaded resort fees. If they are here to stay, let’s at least get our moneys worth. (And if you don’t like them, you seriously need to write your US Congressperson and Senator about legislation to make them transparent, just like the airlines have to do).
