Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Just when we thought that the triple-digit temperatures were gone, they decided to come back for a curtain call this week. The good news? Temps are barely brushing 100 (F) and the nights cool off very, very quickly with overnight lows in the 60. Sun and fun days, no jacket or pullover needed at night.

Victor H. Royer Book Giveaway – Finally, finally, finally we got the bugs out of our custom contest software system. (We had to upgrade our server/hosting a while back to keep up with demand and a few things had a rough transition from one system to the next). For those of you who are new to our newsletter and AccessVegas.com, Victor H. Royer is a top gaming author who has written more books on casino gambling than I have fingers and toes to count. He is also a regular contributor of gaming articles to our site. Check out the Victor H. Royer Casino Gaming Articles archive.

His latest book (pictured right) will give you the lowdown on all the new slots so you can have the upper hand. Nothing is worse than walking up to many of these new machines and not being able to figure out anything about them. Victor will get you informed! Click over to our Victor H. Royer Book Giveaway page and enter to win one of four signed copies of his latest.

Did you know that 86% of people who visit Las Vegas actually win? But simply don’t hold on to it? Need tips on how to win at the new generation of casino slots you’ll find today? Did you know that you can cash a personal check at the cage of Las Vegas casinos and save on ATM fees? When is the best time to come to Las Vegas?

Las Vegas television personality Alan Mendelson (Sunday Mornings at 8 AM on KCOP Channel 13 in LA, AlanBestBuys.com, MoreDeals.com, VegasBestBuys.com) interviews renowned Las Vegas gaming writer Victor H. Royer about his new book New Casino Slots – How To Play, Have Fun and Win! (Purchase: Amazon book link) and delves into many Las Vegas secrets you need to know:

Video Interview: Renowned Las Vegas Gaming Author About Winning At Casino Slots plus Las Vegas Secrets

P.S. How much does Alan love Las Vegas? He got married at a craps table at Caesars Palace a few years ago!

Transportation Security Screwup Administration – The TSA is at it again. As if flying isn’t getting to be a bigger, more expensive hassle, they are trying a new type of search in both Boston and Las Vegas: This search is described by the Boston Herald as a more aggressive palms-first, slide-down body search technique. The TSA is calling it an “enhanced patdown”. Fortunately (from what I’m understanding), this is only for passengers who choose not to use the newer full-body scanners.

Look… I don’t want to alarm anybody, but airfields are not the most secure places on the face of the earth. Hundreds of employees and vendors come and go. If someone wanted to infiltrate and do something bad to an airplane, it could be done. And yet the TSA screens kids, elderly people, and even the pilots who will be flying the airplane (I’m not joking… the on-board crew for each plane is screened just like you are. The very guys who are going to be at the controls of the plane).

If terrorists are going to strike, they are going to strike. And the don’t need an airplane. The very fact that they’ve caused billions of dollars and billions of hours of time/inconvenience to us almost makes it seem as they have won. áI flew just a few weeks after (the original) 9/11, and then on the anniversary of it the following two years. On purpose. (Great days to fly… the airplanes were almost empty).

We can only be defeated if we allow our lives to be altered by others. I personally refuse to run around scared. I wish our leaders felt the same way instead of treating us like children in the name of “security”.

Mac King Show Extended Through 2015 – Our favorite comedy magician Mac King celebrates his 10’th year at Harrah’s Las Vegas with a five year extension. His show has performed for more than one million people in over 5,200 shows since opening in 2000. This is a great afternoon show, the price is right, good for all ages. I highly recommend it.

Enjoy This Issue!

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

As always, I continue to enjoy reading your newsletter. It’s interesting, informative and lively. We are coming to Las Vegas this weekend. Can you help in providing info on where is a good place to buy Halloween costumes?

Thanks,

Edith

Ted Responds:

Halloweenmart has been around for some time. Their web address is http://www.halloweenmart.com and street address is 6230 South Decatur Boulevard (map).

We’ve also been starting to list Las Vegas Halloween events as we get them. For those who are going to be in town that weekend, keep checking back at Las Vegas Halloween Events and Parties 2010. If past years are any indication, plenty of people will be walking the Las Vegas Strip in costume! Oh… one thing: Masks are prohibited in casinos. Best to choose a costume that does not require one.

I was wondering if Las Vegas Brochures are sent out in the mail.

I was informed that they don’t send them out anymore. I am planning in taking my son to Vegas his first time and in having the brochure would give me a lot of planning. Would love to hear from you.

Thanks,

Liz McAllister

Ted Responds:

The internet has really made brochures obsolete. It would take a brochure the size of the phone book to cover everything there is to do and see in Las Vegas. If you go to our site http://www.AccessVegas.com and look along the top menu bar, you’ll see numerous categories (many with a number of sub-categories) for you to use in your research. Also, this newsletter certainly keeps you up on all that is new, recent, and happening.

I appreciate where you are coming from. I still subscribe to a number of magazines I could probably read online, and there is something nice about sitting on the back porch with something to leaf through. But when it comes to researching something as vast as Las Vegas, there is no substitute for the ability to do so online. Brochures simply could not begin to hold all of the information!

Just got home from my annual 5 day LV trip. Stayed at the Fitz (Fitzgerald’s downtown), again and for the price it was fine. We rented a car and saw the new bridge at Hoover Dam. The traffic on the strip was very little and we actually went 4 blocks before stopping.

Ate at Chicago Joe’s (downtown near Fremont Experience). It is a favorite of mine. Excellent food and not too expensive. Frozen drinks at Fremont Hotel are a good size and cost $1.00.

The lines getting our car at the airport were bad and having a reservation didn’t help a bit. We got to see a lot of Nevada and I’m glad we rented but don’t think I’ll do it again.

Downtown is the place for me. Prices are better, gambling better and the crowds are smaller. My favorite was entertaining downtown: Carl “Safe Sax” Ferris…very talented.

Cant wait to return to Vegas next year!

Barb from Massillon, Ohio

Ted Responds:

I really continue to enjoy downtown and if someone is on their second or third visit and hasn’t made it downtown yet for an evening, shame on you!

Some important advice: The best time to go is between dusk and midnight. The excitement is in the air and the free light show plays overhead at the top of each hour. Another important hint: Downtown is slowest on Monday and Tuesday. Wed. – Sat. are best as the free bands, music, DJ’s and other events tend to be on those nights.

Renting a car at the airport is here is a terrible hassle. As we’ve suggested before, rent from one of the rental counters available at many of the hotels. We know for a fact that Flamingo has a rental car counter and cars on site. Rent it for the day and bring it back. No question that if you are a regular visitor, it is fun to get out and see Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, the Valley of Fire or buzz on down to Primm to hit the outlet mall and enjoy the rides. (Oh… and some great golf in a course that isn’t over-crowded with players).

We also enjoy Carl “Safe Sax” Ferris and we’re slated to do a CD giveaway with him in a few weeks (stay tuned/subscribed). We’ve posted a sample video of his show here: Carl ôSafe Saxö Ferris Free Perfomances At Las VegasÆ Fremont Street Experience

We highlighted Chicago Joe’s as part of our “Of Interest To Guys” (guys tour of downtown) in our Access Vegas Insider Vibe û October 28, 2009 issue, but it is a restaurant everyone will enjoy.

Thanks for the great report!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Well… I’m still in computer hell. One desktop is in the shop, we (hopefully) finally have all the parts for the back-up desktop. I’m losing a ton of time from all of that stuff and working off my laptop with 3 external drives plugged into it! Those (relatively) new drive enclosures that let you quickly and easily attach a hard drive from a desktop computer to the USB port of any other machine are lifesavers!

So… still no Members Mania this week (hopefully next week). And we still have one bug left in the contest software before we roll out a great slate of giveaways that we’ve lined up for you. Computer gremlins… hate them!

Romance In Vegas – Yahoo Travel just put out a list of the Top 10 most romantic U.S. cities (article):

1. Honolulu
2. Charleston
3. San Francisco
4. New Orleans
5. Santa Fe
6. San Diego
7. San Antonio
8. Las Vegas
9. Miami
10. New York

They notedáThough renowned for its debauchery and what-happens-in-Vegas-stays-in-Vegas shenanigans, Sin City is also ideal for rekindling passion. We agree. If you tend to make Las Vegas a family trip, try it without the kids. You just may be amazed at the sparks that fly!

Don’t Lose That Ticket – Important advice for you sports bettors: After nearly 18 years living here, you think that I’d learn! I took Oregon State with the points over TCU in the opening game of the college football season. Oregon State is traditionally underrated and I was getting 13 points. (If Oregon State lost by less than 13 points, I won my bet). They only lost by 9. I won!

The problem? I’ve completely misplaced the betting slip I need to claim my winnings. When you bet, treat those tickets like you’d treat cash. If your bet wins, they might as well be cash as anyone possessing the ticket can cash it in.

Also keep in mind: You CAN redeem them by mail within a certain time period. That information is usually on the back of the ticket. So, feel free to make a bet on a game that occurs after you’ve left town. But keep in mind that they print those things on the cheap receipt paper. Keep it in your wallet for too long, and it will smear off or fade. Expose it to sunlight for too long, same story. Don’t even think about getting it damp (let alone wet). Happy betting!

Presidential Remarks Still Hurting Us? – Mayor Goodman found out first-hand from a Financial Crimes Investigators conference here recently that their attendance would have been some 30% higher if not for the lingering affects of President Obama’s anti-Vegas remarks. While Obama has made Vegas-friendly remarks while in town (duh), he hasn’t been quick to make them in any other forum. The Mayor would like to see that rectified. More on this: Obama statements still hurting Las Vegas convention business

Ricky Nelson Remembered – Our friend John Earl and his Boogieman (Rhythm and Blues) Band open for Matthew & Gunner Nelson — pop band Nelson, anyone remember “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love & Affection” — in a tribute concert to their father Ricky Nelson Friday Sept. 24 at 7 PM at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street in Henderson (of course). Admission is free and the concert is in conjunction with the weekend-long Super Run Classic Car show. More Details: http://x.co/64AY

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Our hundred degree days are done, ane we’re settling into some beautiful weather. Highs in the 90’s F and overnight lows in the 60’s. With our dry climate, not too hot and not too cold.

No Members Mania this week. Don’t worry… the newsletter is still packed with tons of the latest Las Vegas news and events!

I got hit with a computer double-whammy this week: Lost the hard drive on my main machine. No problem… I have a back-up machine to jump right in on. Except it started having a memory error (which took some time to figure out). Of course, all of this started happening the Friday before Labor Day weekend and I won’t lie: We’re not computer techs here. We simply use them to provide you all the great information we put out!

After a number of fruitless hours working on the machines, I realized that some stuff just wasn’t going to get done this week.

Fortunately, I do back up my data using a combination of Mozy.com and external hard drives. So… getting back up and running was as painless as the situation could be under the circumstances.

However, some features and giveaways promised for this issue will be delayed a week.

If you are a new reader (or even a long-time reader) this is a great time to go back and enjoy both the newsletter archives and the Members Mania (Readers Questions Answered) archives. There is always something you may have missed, or something new to learn:

Under The Surface – Las Vegas boasts possibly two of the most spellbinding water-bases shows in the world. Le Reve at Wynn Las Vegas and Cirque du Soleil’s O. Le Reve now offers a VIP package (starting at $2000 per couple which includes lodging and more) which lets you view the show from beneath the water (through glass, you stay warm and dry). This “show below a show” invites you to see the precisions choreography, divers, breathing stations, scenery shifts and other aspects of the show few ever see. Until now!

We found a great video story on YouTube taking you along for this experience. If you’re game to spend the money, this will give you a stunning preview. If this is a little out of your budget, you can still enjoy this well-produced story that takes you up-close: Le Reve Las Vegas “Diving The Dream” VIP Package Preview Video

Against The Wind – I’ve made it no secret that I’m an aviation fan. One of the great things about living in Las Vegas is the heavy flow of air traffic and the ease of watching it all (including listening to the control tower on your car radio) at the McCarran Viewing Area (map). I follow a blog written by a long-time airline captain, who recently wrote about a windy Las Vegas landing. Some of the stuff is on the technical side, but it is a nice look at what it takes to bring a plane down during some of our wind-swept weather: http://flightlevel390.blogspot.com/2010/08/checklist.html

Fremont Street Experience Garners Top 10 Award – We’ve never hid our love of downtown Las Vegas (the Fremont Street Experience, aka “old Las Vegas”.áTripAdvisor concurs and has recently named Fremont Street Experience as one of the “Top 10: Free Things To Do in the United States.”áAlso included on the list are: the Big Apple Greeter and the Staten Island Ferry in New York, the Pearl Harbor exhibit in Hawaii, the Garden of Gods in Colorado, Samuel Adams Brewery in Massachusetts, the Jelly Belly Factory in California, HersheyÆs Chocolate World in Pennsylvania, the St. Louis Zoo in Missouri, and D.C. by Foot in Washington, D.C.

Honestly, if you have not been downtown to Fremont Street, you have not seen all of Las Vegas. Getting there is simple: Just get on any northbound Ace or Duece bus running along The Strip. Get off at the end of the line and you are there! Make sure to go between sunset and midnight so you’ll catch the overhead light shows and endless free entertainment.

Liberace Has Left The Building – Almost. Unfortunately, the Liberace Museum has closed citing declining visitor volume and associated declining revenues. Talks to move the collection to a Strip hotel have not come to fruition. Key parts of the collection may be put on tour as a traveling display.

NFL Bars – Each year, our main local paper posts a list of various bars in the Las Vegas area that cater to fans of a particular NFL team. To make the list, a bar must ONLY show the team in question while their game is on and MUST show every single game the team plays. With so many transplants for across the United States (and with a lack of a local NFL team), a long list of bars give fans that “back home” feeling. Check out NFL SEASON 2010: Valley bars get ready for kickoff

Visitation Numbers Show Significant Rise – Nearly 5% more visitors came to Las Vegas in July 2010 (over 3.3 million total visitors for the month) than did in July 2009. It was the largest jump since December of 2005. A couple of times per month, I get a “We’re never coming back to Las Vegas” email. Well… someone else is enjoying a Las Vegas vacation in your place!

To those who have repeatedly rang the death knell for Las Vegas the past few years and have openly mocked people like me who said “It’s not that bad, we’ll be fine, Las Vegas is still fun, people will be back” I simply say this:

    I told you so.

Serving Las Vegas Visitors and Residents Since 1999

Welcome to the Insider Vibe! This is the official newsletter of AccessVegas.Com. We talk about the Las Vegas activities you really care about.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Winter is in the air as a chill sweeps down the Las Vegas Strip. OK… I exaggerate but this week brought highs in the 90’s (F) with overnight lows that dipped into the 60’s for the first time in about three months. We bounce back over the 100 mark for Labor Day weekend, which is going to make for some red-hot pool parties.

Speaking of, another series of the Hard Rock’s Rehab pool party television show debuts Labor Day Weekend on truTV. (We’re not sure of international airings but you may be able to watch shows or highlights online after their air date). You may wish to check the official truTV Rehab site in about a week. My idea of a pool party is slightly more sedate (I’m looking forward to Nikki Beach next year at Tropicana) but watching a bunch of Vegas-based drama is always a good guilty pleasure!

Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon – Once again this year, the telethon is originating live from the South Point Hotel Casino here in Las Vegas September 5 at 6 PM through 3:30 PM on September 6 (all times Pacific). Every year, an number of Las Vegas headliners join the national acts who appear, so you might want to set the DVR to catch what you don’t watch live. If you are a local or visiting during that time, admission has traditionally been free. Best bet for virtually no lines or wait? Late night into the early morning.

Coolest or Most Stressed? – Within the space of a couple weeks, Forbes magazine published the results of a nationwide poll showing Las Vegas tieing with New York City as the coolest city in the United States. Hot on the heels of that was (again) Forbes noting that Las Vegas is the “most stressed” city in the county. How could this be? Simple:

Continue on to my latest blog post Is Las Vegas The Coolest Or Most Stressed City In The Country? You can read my thoughts on why the stress, who is affected (and who isn’t), what is in store for the next 18 months, and why/how things will be 3-5 years from now. Plus, we have a comment box open for your thoughts.

Five Trains To Southern California – With five competing ideas about connecting visitor-rich Southern California with Las Vegas, one is bound to come to fruition. Here’s how I handicap them:

    • Maglev is still borderline sci-fi and very expensive. Isn’t going to happen anytime soon.
    • DesertXpress is a high-speed train running on its own rails… to Victorville. (Map of Victorville in relation to Las Vegas and Los Angeles). Where it may tie in to a California high-speed rail system at a later date. Even when it does, you’ll need multiple transfers to get here. Not going to happen.
    • Desert Lightning is a proposal for high-speed rail linking L.A and Phoenix via Las Vegas. Nice idea and the inclusion of Phoenix (6’th largest metro area in the U.S.) would give it a more broad base of support. Would be phenomenal for Las Vegas. But not going to happen soon.
    • Z-Train and Las Vegas Railway Express (X-Train) would use existing rails. Z-Train wants to provide an upscale experience (fashion shows on the train, etc). Go after the high-end customer who otherwise would fly first class or charter a flight. X-Train is unabashedly noting that they will be a party train. Your vacation will start when you board the train. Wide seats, multiple bar cars with big screen TV’s, you get the idea.

My money is on the X-Train. Get the party started early on the way over, ability to sleep it off on the way home (or watch a game that you bet on).

Paris Hilton – Don’t know, don’t care, I don’t do cocaine (I’m enough of an extrovert as it is). Driving down The Strip smoking pot (or with riders in your car doing so) when you are one of the top nightclub guys in town? Probably not the brightest thing in the world. Anyone who has been to a rock concert knows you can smell it a long ways away. For those wanting to follow the saga, legendary local gossip columnist Norm Clarke is following the story.

Liquor At Baggage Claim – It looks like you’ll soon be able to pop into a liquor store and stock up while you wait to claim your luggage and Las Vegas’ McCarran airport. (After paying the luggage fees most airlines charge, you’ll need a bottle of something). The only hotel that objected at the hearings was Wynn Las Vegas. I’m a little surprised that more objection among resort properties didn’t materialize.áDrink costs at Strip hotel bars are no bargain, but you’ll pay it when you need a drink.

However, more people getting the party started in their room which means less in bar revenue. The higher they raise the drink prices at their bars, the more people search out alternatives. Our tip (which we’ve given many times, but we always have new readers): Most hotel sundry stores have both cold beverages (including beer) and bottled liquor available. And, you don’t have to tip your clerk.

Slots Book Giveaway – We’re having problems with our contest software (and because of the amount of entries we receive, we can’t simply set up and email and process them by hand). So, the Victor H. Royer book giveaway we promised last week will hopefully be announced in our next issue. All other aspects of our site are working fine.

Because of work on the back-end (boring part) of this job, I’ve have not posted to Ask.AccessVegas.com for about 10 days. But we’ll put a couple letters here in the newsletter and highlight some past posts that have new comments!

I continue to enjoy your newsletter, and we will be returning to Las Vegas again next month. Recently, I heard someone refer to “Old Las Vegas” and “Downtown Las Vegas”. As I had never heard of “Old Las Vegas”, I just assumed the terms were synonymous and that reference was actually to the Fremont Street area. Am I correct or is there a difference between “Old Las Vegas” and “Downtown Las Vegas”? If these are two separate locations, what area constitutes Old Las Vegas and what is considered Downtown Las Vegas?

Keep those newsletters coming. Very informative.

    Thanks,

    Edith

    Ted Responds:

For visitor purposes, Fremont Street downtown is “old” Las Vegas. If you live here, it can refer to the neighborhoods on the east side of town between The Strip and downtown. Some of those areas (built in the ’50’s, which is old for Las Vegas) are quite nice and continue to be “best kept secrets” for someone wanting to live close to everything.

I have been traveling alone to Vegas for the last 5 years since I retired. My husband doesn’t like to gamble and my friends are still working so cannot take time during the week to visit. I usually stay at a Harrah’s property since they are located center strip and I can walk the strip. I have never felt uncomfortable. I usually request a room nearer the elevator so am not walking down a long hallway.

    Kathy

I’ve been a faithful reader of your newsletter for many years & find it the most helpful of any publication re: Vegas out there. I just read your question re: females traveling alone to Las Vegas & tried to post a comment but was unable to.

Editor’s Note: Each post only allows comments for a certain period of time. This keeps spammers from finding really old posts and just starting to post their nonsense to them. Hence, we are running these comments here.

I am writing you to say that not only did I travel to Las Vegas this past May alone for 6 nights because my friend couldn’t come & I love Vegas too much to give up my annual visit. I am an official “senior citizen” now & flew from New York to Vegas & stayed 2 nights @Flamingo & 4 nights @ Harrah’s. I usually stick to the Harrah’s properties because I am a Diamond Card Holder forá7 years.

I loved every day of my adventure; took in 5 shows, went to pool daily, walked & explored & ventured out to other properties such as the new Aria & also dined @Bellagio & Venetian – I will do it again next year if no one wants to go – I was never afraid or concerned for my safety as I didn’t wander off into unknown streets – I never felt “pathetic” nor should anyone else.

Keep up the great newsletters & info – thanks for reading my comment.

Gerry from Long Island, New York

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! The sun is setting just a little bit earlier each night, lighting up the Las Vegas skyline just a bit earlier. Photographers who shoot Las Vegas refer to the time around sundown here as the “golden hour” because the orange hues of sunset against the hotels just as the hotels themselves are starting to light up is magic. 17+ years in town and seeing it live still gives me chills!

The following photos I shot from Voodoo at The Rio are dated, but make for a great comparison of the facing light during this “golden hour”

Las Vegas, New York Tie As ‘Coolest’ (Most Hip) Cities – Forbes Magazine recently listed their Top 10 for the coolest cities in America:

    1. Las Vegas (tie)
    1. New York (tie)
    3. Seattle
    4. Chicago
    5. Oakland
    6. Orlando
    7. San Diego
    8. L.A.
    9. Miami
    10. Washington

You can read the article here: America’s Coolest Cities – In these trendy metros, nightlife is hot and the people are cool. While no argument on New York’s ranking, our showing is pretty impressive given that this was from a nationwide survey Forbes took. Las Vegas has been bashed and battered in the national media for the past two years. I’ve personally been ridiculed for having such an upbeat view of my city. Looks like I’m not alone in thinking that Las Vegas is a great place!

Hottest Month Ever In Las Vegas – Many of you may have heard that July 2010 was the hottest month ever here in Las Vegas with an average temperature of 96.2 F.

Just a note: This record was a bit deceiving. We didn’t once bump up against the all-time record (117), with the warmest few days clocking in at 113. The difference was the overnight temperatures. The growth of Las Vegas has creates lots more asphalt and concrete that absorb and hold heat through the night. In addition, new homes are generally not allowed to have lawns. Lawns don’t hold heat overnight, and actually cool the temps when they are watered (like the cooling you get when sitting under a mister).

And… the local water utility has paid significant sums of money to homes and businesses as an incentive to remove their lawns in the name of water conservation. We’re into August, and overnight lows the past few days were in the 70’s and temps have otherwise returned to slightly below average for the month so far.

All You Can Eat Crab and Steak DinnerOrleans Las Vegas is offering this plus seven live cooking stations at their buffet on Wednesday nights for only $15.95. Yes, they have a free shuttle from The Strip (Bill’s Gambling Hall). Expect about a 10 minute ride. From their website:

The Orleans offers free shuttle service to its sister property the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino as well as the Las Vegas strip. The shuttle operates 7 days a week from 9:00 AM to 12:30 AM and picks up guests approximately every 30 – 45 minutes from the hotel’s Tropicana Avenue entrance. The last shuttle will leave Bill’s Gambling Hall at 12:30 AM.

Choosing A New Home Community In Las Vegas? – We generated some lively discussion over the past month on my Members Mania post Moving To Las Vegas û Where Should I Live? Worth checking out all the responses. In the piece, I leaned pretty strongly against a certain area of town, and in general warning of being careful about buying in some of the new neighborhoods (saying it seems like you can practically reach out your window and touch your neighbors house in many newer neighborhoods). Now a recent local news report New communities falling short of their master plans – Developers slash spending on promised amenities, angering residents is also worth a read before you buy in a new community here in Las Vegas. Speaking of…

Buy Your Own Southern Nevada CityCal-Nev-Ari, NV sits 70 miles south of Las Vegas and 30 miles northwest of Laughlin, has its own airport (1L4 Kidwell Airport), andáis all yours (residential homes excluded) for $17 million. This is no ghost town: 400 residents enjoy full utilities. The price includes a casino, restaurant, store, RV park, motel and mobile home park. Deepwater wells provide water (a plus, no dependence on the ever-dwindling Colorado River). You can enjoy the complete story with video here: Small Nevada town put up for sale

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Running late this week. I lost some time to a some due to unexpected home repairs — the price one pays for choosing to live in one of Las Vegas’ more vintage neighborhoods — so let’s jump right into things:

Corrections – We don’t goof often but last issue had a couple of errors:

Moving To Las Vegas – I want to highlight a couple of posts in this week’s Members Mania section further down the newsletter:

    • Moving To Las Vegas û Where Should I Live? – I gave probably my most in-depth and certainly most recent treatise on moving here. Where to buy, where not to buy, how to not have a real estate agent steer you the wrong way (and how to find a decent one), and the latest tips for house-hunting online so you can have most of the homework done before you get here.I published it in our What’s Hot (subscribe)feed last week and we already have a lively discussion going on in the comments section. If you are just dreaming of moving here, getting serious about it, or (especially) if you live here and want to add your own two cents, I consider this a must-read. All comments (even those who don’t agree with me) are encouraged.
    • Retired And Thinking About Moving To Las Vegas, Senior Housing Questions? – I’m still about 20 years from hitting the senior mark, but I know we have a significant contingent of local seniors who are readers. Any help you can give by reading the post and entering comments below it would be incredibly welcome and appreciated!

Betty In The Sky With A Suitcase – Although not so much Vegas-related, one of my favorite podcasts is called Betty In The Sky With A Suitcase. Betty is a flight attendant for a major commercial carrier. She takes her recorder along with her and collects funny/interesting stories about the world of airline travel from pilots, other stewardesses (she’s totally cool with that term) and sometimes passengers. Info:

Arizona Style Immigration Law In Nevada? – A recent Review-Journal poll showed that 57% of Nevadans favor enacting the same kind of law that stirred up so much controversy in Arizona (11% were undecided). No move is afoot at present, and the Nevada legislature doesn’t meet until next year.

Closely watched will be the effect (if any) on Arizona tourism. There would definitely be less will to pass/enforce the law here during the current economic climate if it ends up hurting Arizona travel. Having said that, the full enforcement of Arizona’s law won’t be known until it gets worked through the courts. Going to be a while…

This Newsletter Is Helpware – OK, every once in a while, I call for you to step up to the plate. We’re able to keep this newsletter complimentary because we have enough subscribers to be able to attract quality advertisers. There’s so much more we could be doing. Things like a full-time shows/events writer. Sending photographers to more events. Being more responsive with our Facebook and Twitter pages so you could get better, more instant responses to Vegas questions. And more.

You’ve heard of software and freeware (software at no charge). Consider our newsletter “helpware”. You help promote it, and we can help deliver a better product. Plus, it is the least we could ask since we don’t charge (other similar Las Vegas information sites and publications do).

We know that many (and I mean many, many, many) of you read and participate on various Las Vegas blogs, forums, message boards, email groups and/or just flat out know plenty of friends and associates who visit (or are thinking of visiting) Las Vegas. Please take just a few minutes out of your life to help spread the word.

    • Mention the newsletter in forums you participate on — people can subscribe at the very top of AccessVegas.com and always at no cost.
    • Give us a mention in your blog (even if it isn’t a Vegas blog). Your readers want to know what your interests are once in a while. Kind of like my shout-out to the Betty podcast this issue.
    • Email the www.AccessVegas.com web address to friends and encourage them to subscribe (top of our main page).
    • If someone in the office is headed here, email them with it or write it down for them. (Trust me, they’ll otherwise forget it and end up at accesslasvegas.com — not ours — or some other scam Vegas site because they remember it wrong).

Hey, it’s the least you can do, and you’ll be helping assure that we can continue to deliver good, complimentary, high-quality content well into the future.

    Enjoy This Issue!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! A very hot, hot, hot Las Vegas where temps were over 110 F for much of the last week. I finally put a misting system on my back patio (duh, should have done that a long time ago). But give me 110 instead of freezing temps anytime. If you are heat-adverse and from a cooler climate, now is the time to think about booking for fall. After the pool and picnic weather has subsided in your area, we’ll be enjoying 80 degree days and pleasantly cool nights (and following your favorite football team in the sports book here in Las Vegas!

Hooters Beer SpecialHooters Las Vegas hotel is offering $1.50 Bud and Bud Light beers at all casino bars. People seem to think of Hooters as being back off of The Strip. But in reality, the Hooters entrance sits directly across from the porte-cochere of the MGM Grand. It is a longer walk from The Strip to the restaurants in the back of the MGM than it is to Hooters!

Note: While it appears the promotion is indefinite, it never hurts to call ahead and check. PLEASE don’t be that person that emails us in 2011 going We were staying downtown and we went all the way to Hooters just for the beer special you talked about… and they weren’t running anymore. Even if you have to pay a buck to call from your hotel room (where applicable), it is always wise to check out whether a deal is still running before making a special trek.

We’ve had a few comments about some of the changes we’ve been making in the newsletter. Following is a sample and my note of response:

I miss-We love our readers! It could be improved if, at least, you didn’t have to click on each story. If the entire reader’s questions/comments came up all at once, I wouldn’t be so put out. I just miss them being one of the most important sections of the newsletter.

Thanks for the great newsletter, nonetheless.

    S. Pomplun, MN

    My Response:

All of the letters are still there! In fact, because each on is on a web page, we can go more in-depth on answering some questions. And, we’re able to use more letters than we used to. Just look at the most recent one: Moving To Las Vegas û Where Should I Live? I would never have had the opportunity to go as in-depth here in the newsletter as I was able to do online.

Here’s the problem we are having to work around:

Our newsletter (as a computer file) is almost 100k in file size each week. Many, many internet services automatically tag any newsletter over 40k as spam which (combined with anti-Vegas spam filters) inhibits our full subscriber list from getting it every single week. (Some will receive it, others won’t).

We have a choice to either to cut the information we run in half, or move it online. Reducing the amount of info we run is out of the question. Hence, we’re moving much of it online.

We give each reader question a separate page for the following reasons:

    1. You can decide which ones you do and don’t want to read without wading through a long page of multiple entries which may or may not be of interest.

    2. We have more and more people signing up for our What’s Hot feed (short digest list of new stuff we put up, delivered 3-4 times a week). By putting up a new Members Mania post every every day or two, our What’s Hot subscribers can enjoy a little bit of Vegas almost every day instead of waiting for (and wading through) the newsletter. Also, more-and-more often we get news of events that don’t make the newsletter deadline. But we can post them to the internet and include then in the What’s Hot feed.

Hint. If you simply go to http://ask.accessvegas.com you’ll see the most recent Members Mania posts — all on one page — like you noted that you like them.

But at the end of the day, you are generally getting longer, more informative answers from me because of no space constraints, and you are getting letters that otherwise wouldn’t have run due to space. So really… you’re getting more, not less!

Side note on the new Moving To Las Vegas û Where Should I Live? post. I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I can’t emphasize the following enough: ONLY move to Las Vegas if you are independently wealthy, retiring comfortably, or already employed in a job that lets you live anywhere (and isn’t dependent on the Las Vegas economy). Nevada unemployment is at 4.2 percent, 5% above the national average. Nearly 200,000 people locally out of work.

I have a good friend considering moving here and willing to pick up “anything to get him by” until a job in his field opens up. I told him that there aren’t “anything to get him by” jobs out there. Fast food jobs are hard to come by. To no one’s surprise, employment in tourism and professional fields are holding steady. The bleed in jobs (as I’ve noted it would be in past issues) is in construction.

2004, 2004, 2004 – Regular readers know that I’ve often pointed out that this “Vegas is dying and is going to dry up and blow away in the recession” talk is crazy-talk. Employment levels in actual count of people who have a job are at 2004 levels (we simply have too many people living here), visitor levels are at 2004 levels (which was considered a great year), and now the Convention Authority is basing its latest budget on… (hold your breath…) 2004 levels.

The only problem that Las Vegas (as a destination) had was that everybody got WAY too overzealous in building rooms. And they did it all at once. Had the glut of new hotels not flooded the market (and the construction workers to build them never have moved to town), you would have never heard about Las Vegas having a recession. Speaking of…

3000 More Rooms – Work is moving along nicely on The Cosmopolitan, two 50-story towers next to CityCenter. This will put additional downward pressure on room rates, keeping Las Vegas’ reputation as an extreme value intact for at least the next 9-12 months. Yes, airfare is expensive right now. But rooms here are such a bargain that we’re still the best value vacation of its kind.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! We get great weather much of the year. We get summer twice (both spring and fall here where our weather is comparable to summer in much of the U.S., Europe, Canada). But from mid-July through Labor Day, we pay the piper with some scorching weather. Temps the next few days are slated to rise above 110 F and overnight lows have been barely dipping ábelow 98 F.

If you are headed our way, my summer suggestions: You early birds, keep that early bird schedule (especially if you are coming from time zones east of us where you’re up much earlier than we normally are here). Daybreak is about 5 AM and an early morning pre-buffet (most open at 7 AM) walk (and maybe some gaming) is the perfect time to be out on The Strip. Plenty of elbow room, shade against the rising sun from the tall hotels, and lower temps. If you are a late riser, rise really late. Do brunch at 1 PM then indoor activities (shopping, playing) during the afternoon and save walking The Strip until after 10 PM when temps start to dip below 100 F and party until sunrise.

Water, Water Everywhere – Just a reminder to also drink more water than your body is telling you to. Our low humidity keeps your skin dry even when you are losing plenty of moisture and dehydration can set in quickly (especially if you are boozing). My advice? When ordering a drink, order an ice water along side it. Skip buying bottled water at the bars (expensive) and instead do so at many of the sundry stores along The Strip or at your hotel’s gift shop (where you can get a REAL bottle of water — good sized one — for way cheaper than those little bottles you pay dearly for at a bar).

Speaking Of Late Risers – The Cosmopolitan opens this December and will have packages featuring 8 PM check-out. More on this down the road, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see other hotels adopt that option. Upon arrival here, you often don’t need a room until night falls, and many would enjoy sleeping in and then squeezing every last minute out of their last day here. We love the concept!

Holly Madison Bikini Wet Republic Las Vegas July 4 2010Holly Madison Provides July 4’th “Fireworks” At Wet Republic Las Vegas – Holly Madison continues to be everywhere. Literally. On her recent reality show, she noted that she’s often at 3-4 events a day (and no stranger to charity events) and spent July 4’th as the featured celeb at MGM’s Wet Republic daylife pool party with cast mates from her reality show and Peepshow co-star Josh Strickland.

Fireworks Over The Strip On The Fourth – If you couldn’t be here on the 4’th of July, you missed a totally spectacular 18 minute fireworks show over Caesars Palace plus secondary shows at Mandalay Bay and the Las Vegas Hilton that could be viewed from some parts of The Las Vegas Strip. As great as they were, I keep beating the drum for us to do a full New Years Eve style show like we do up and down the entire Strip on July 4. The 1/2 million dollar price tag would be around .05% of the annual budget that the Convention/Visitors Authority spends each year (and is currently being wasted on the ridiculous Camp Vegas ads).

The highlights would be shown around the world the next day. Demand to be here on the 4’th would be even greater. And frankly, the weather on July 4’th is a lot nicer than New Year’s Eve.

If you weren’t here or just want to relive it, head over to Las Vegas Fourth Of July Fireworks At Caesars Palace Video where we’ve posted two videos from the 4’th.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Summer is in full swing, and and all those people who claimed that Las Vegas was dead (or dying) are morons. Some thought that when I refuted the notion over the past couple of years, I was just holding out crazy hope and having wishful thinking. However, time-after-time you were writing me and telling me what my own eyes told me: Las Vegas is busy.

Last Monday, we took an afternoon cruise down the Las Vegas Strip. It was 106 F out. Traffic was bumper-to-bumper. The sidewalks had plenty of people on them. And this is a Monday (mid-weeks are slower) in June! That “Vegas is dying” stuff was just some sour grapes by people with with no life who don’t like having fun. They were hoping that all of your fun would grind to a halt. They were wrong!

Bringing Fremont Street To The Strip – Harrah’s (Corporation) is reviving its plans to build a bars/restaurants/shops/etc complex between O’Sheas and The Flamingo, including the concept of having huge Ferris wheel attraction in the back which would take visitors high over the Las Vegas Strip. I’ve heard people question that limited space there, but it won’t be an issue:

    • That “alley” is a LOT wider than people think. It is the same spot we filmed Cinco De Mayo Las Vegas Strip 2010 Party
    • O’Shea’s parking garage is used for Harrah’s (Corp) employee parking. It would be perhaps converted to mixed use or torn down and employees could park on some of the empty space created when Harrah’s tore down all of the apartments, timeshares, and Bourbon Street Hotel.

Las Vegas Strip resorts are getting wise to what is happening on Fremont Street downtown. It has turned into one great party every night. Nice and condensed limiting the long walks, plenty of diversions and entertainment, and growing crowds. If Harrah’s can recreate that, they have a home run on their hands.

Don’t Claim To Know Vegas If You Don’t – A San Francisco based consumer reporter recently took a trip here and made some disparaging blog posts about Las Vegas (presumably to write off his trip — “work research”). He was particularly aggravated over paying $4 for a soft drink at a casino bar and otherwise painted Las Vegas as a rip-off. Truth is, he just didn’t know how to save money on food and drink here! (He obviously isn’t one of my readers).

I took the time to answer his charges and detailed all the ways to save on your libations, soft drinks, and noted that meal specials abound if you know where to find them.

Click over to read Consumer Reporter Tries To Bash Las Vegasà My Retort where I posted a link to his original comments plus my retort. You might even come across some ways to save on your food and drink here that you hadn’t thought about! Safe to say that if you are a regular reader here, you are much better informed about Las Vegas than most of the wanna-be experts.

Air Traffic Down – …Slightly for the fourth straight month. Think nothing of it. Everybody is trying to connect it with tourism. The reality is that our stagnant population combined with 14% unemployment has locals flying a LOT less. The new Hoover Dam bridge (to be finished in November of this year) will put a small dent in that as well. Shaving 1/2 hour (or more at times) off the drive from Arizona and New Mexico plus the continued TSA and airport hassles will continue to keep people in their cars. Plus, regular visitors like having a car here so they can get off The Strip to local attractions like Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, Lake Las Vegas and more.

Las Vegas Fireworks – Earlier in the week, we put fireworks listings for the Las Vegas Strip area online. We immediately put it out on Twitter and our What’s Hot feed (which you can subscribe to by email at no cost). The Stratospher Tower, Las Vegas, Nevada

Watch The Sunset – We have spectacular sunsets all year ’round. My pick to watch them (especially this time of year)? in the air-conditioned comfort of Stratosphere Tower Las Vegas. Here’s why: From the inside observation area you can catch both The Strip and Downtown light up, and between those two your western view is the sun dipping below the mountains which surround our area. Outstanding.

Keep in mind that the sun can vanish quick here over the mountains, and our sunset is probably earlier than yours at home (as we sit on the very eastern edge of our time zone). Get up there with plenty of time to spare.
