Las Vegas Magician Mike Hammer Is Enjoying The Best Of Both Worlds

Chicago-born magician and comedian Mike Hammer has been building his name in the Las Vegas entertainment scene for more than two decades, including his current 11-years-and-counting stint headlining his show at the Four Queens on historic downtown’s Fremont Street. His rapid-fire delivery keeps audiences on their toes, then his sleight-of-hand skills astonish all. Relic game Sigma Derby still attracting players to Las Vegas casino

The D has become somewhat of a mecca for gamblers — mostly small-time gamblers — who want to play a vintage coin-operated slot machine that is the only one of its kind in Las Vegas and one of the last in the United States. On the second floor at the popular downtown gaming hall, up to 10 players at a time can be found playing the Sigma Derby Horse Track — and nearby gawkers can be seen looking at its flashing yellow-and-orange facade while five tiny plastic horses endlessly gallup around a miniature race track with faux dirt.

Touring Las Vegas’ Many Elvis-Related Locations

Elvis Presley’s footprints are all over this Valley. He began leaving them in April 1956, when he performed a two-week run of shows in the Venus Room of the now-defunct New Frontier Hotel and Casino. The property was torn down in 2007, but that doesn’t change that fact that those blue suede shoes were once planted on the northwest corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fashion Show Drive. And while those New Frontier shows were tepidly received (Las Vegas Sun writer Bill Willard called Elvis and his band “uncouth” and “a bore”), Elvis still had a lot of Vegas ahead of him.

Where to Find the Best Barbecue in Las Vegas

Barbecue can be a touchy subject in Las Vegas. Conversations usually begin with “Vegas never had good barbecue until…” and then debates erupt over how to finish the sentence. Some restaurants earn equal amounts of praise and complaints. Others are automatically discarded for trite reasons (like being on the Strip, for example). So where to begin? While barbecue menus may look similar to the casual observer, the low-and-slow style of smoking meats leaves little room for error. A good operation requires the expertise of a seasoned pitmaster and well-crafted side dishes. A heavy dose of charm doesn’t hurt either. Ready to form an opinion of your own? Check out the following restaurants to see how the barbecue scene is booming in Las Vegas.

And, the whole thing is wrapped in some incredible local art that needs to be seen to be believed – so let’s go!

Newkirk’s Notes

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! Pools are open, everyone is talking March Madness, and cold weather (highs below 70F) appear to be done. Let’s dig into the latest “must know” for Vegas:

Fly Now Or Fly Later? – In a fairly recent issue, I suggested that if you had the option regarding a Las Vegas visit this year, coming later in the year might be a good idea. Staffing should be much closer to normal. The pent-up demand will have started to fade. We’re still looking at 2023 before conventions really start to return to normal.

This column, breaking down:

– Should You Be Using Airline Miles And Hotel Points Now, Or Hold On To Them?

– Yes, The Ride Around Downtown And The Arts District Is Free. How, When, And Where!

– The Latest Las Vegas Hotel Opens, Without Gaming. We Have What You Need To Know.

Dynamic New Show Costumes Are Changing The Look Of Las Vegas

What does Las Vegas look like? The images that spring to mind to answer that question are probably much different than they would have been 20, 10 or even five years ago, but it goes without saying that this city has an iconography all its own. It’s a place built on entertainment, and the way entertainment looks here evolves faster all the time.

Note from Ted: Some time ago, we talked about the Grand Canyon West, which is home of the Skywalk (glass walk that juts you 4000+ feet over the bottom of the canyon). We too also suggest using Maverick Helicopter Tours whether you want to visit the Grand Canyon West, or enjoy just a flight over the canyon. They have (by far) the highest standards in town, and I’m 100% comfortable putting both family and friends on their flights.

As with the airlines, Maverick is requiring masking until the federal government ceases that rule for traveling on planes, trains, and similar.

Just a little FYI for those who are considering going – please be aware of their rules. You’re not allowed to take your cameras, binoculars out on the sidewalk for instance. They have “photo” package deals if you’re interested. There are various ways to get there… by rental car, bus tour trip, and (my fave) helicopter tour (which I did through Maverick Helicopters – highly recommend them)!

Where to Watch March Madness in Las Vegas

When it comes to big events in Vegas, there might not be a busier two-week stretch than the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament, also dubbed March Madness. With the pandemic affecting both the tournament and Las Vegas over the past two years, the annual event might see its biggest year yet. Combine the higher-than-ever interest in sports betting and what seems like a full return to pre-pandemic occupancy, and it’s a perfect storm of excitement in Vegas for March Madness in 2022.

Visiting one of the Top Buffets in Vegas – Wynn’s Seafood Buffet

(Video Publishers Notes) On my last night in Vegas, I got a chance to explore and decided to visit another top Vegas Buffet. I’ve always found that the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars and the Buffet at the Wynn are always the contenders for the top buffets on the Vegas Strip. I have visited the Bacchanal buffet on this visit, but have not yet tried the Wynn buffet. I’m curious to know if it’s just as good as before or maybe even better! …is the Wynn better than the Bacchanal? There’s only one way to fine out.
I made a trip over to the Wynn to attend their weekend seafood dinner buffet. Generally, I choose the weekend dinner as they tend to have the most item and selections to showcase, and this was certainly the case! Along with the array of roasted meats with luscious prime rib and bbq, seafood selections with crab and whole fish, it was their specials stations stood out! Freshly made tacos and warm comforting made to order noodles were very satisfying.
I recall in the past that the Wynn came in a close second to the Bacchanal, and that has remained unchanged. Still and amazing buffet and you won’t be disappointed; it looks like the Wynn and Vegas are up and running, better than ever!

Newkirk’s Notes

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! Masks are out (unless you choose to mask), and springtime weather is in the air. I don’t want to speak too soon, but things might just be getting back to normal.

A Sucker Really Is Born Every Minute – Roulette has emerged as the second most popular table game at the casinos last year, with the house pocketing over twice as much in 2021 as it did in 2020. Pent-up demand drove gambling revenue higher, casinos were unrelenting in raising table-game limits (even though it often resulted in empty tables), and a different strain of visitor may have been looking for more simple, social games to play.

This column, breaking down

– The possible worst game to play in the casino, and what to avoid about it.

– Is Sports Betting the future of gambling?

– You can actually be “King Of The Mountain” in Las Vegas

– What the latest visitor counts and gaming wins mean, and when should you plan your next visit based on that data?

Today at the craps machine, something really messed up happened. The machine hit four 6’s in a row, all were when the dice showed 5- The machine locked up on the fourth 6 instead of paying everyone who bet on the pass line. The error message was triggered because it hit the exact same kind of 6 four times in a row, a 5 and a 1 on each dice.

The slot attendant came by and reset the machine. No one was allowed to take down their bets on other numbers besides the pass line. No one betting on pass line or placing the 6 got paid for the fourth 6. The next roll was a 7 out, of course. And everyone was livid. The manager was with the slot attendant and seemed like he did not care. I wonder if people have recourse because of this glitch. It’s not a malfunction if the dice legitimately hit 6 four times in a row as a 5-1. If that occurred at a table everyone would get paid on the fourth 6.
