Newkirk’s Notes

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! – Lots to jump into, but I have to note that after having perhaps the coldest “winter” I remember in my nearly 30 years here (many, many days with overnights below freezing, and well down into the 20’s F a number of times), the 10 day forecast is showing nothing but highs in the 60’s F. We’ll take it. “Spring” is here in Las Vegas!

Buble, Legend, and Adele Round Out Strip’s Residency Hot Streak

It seems like there is a new A-list music talent announcing new shows in Las Vegas every day. Residencies at Caesars, Resorts World, and Planet Hollywood are keeping the city front and center in the music world. The heaviest-hitters right now are John Legend, Michael Bublé, and Adele. Well we finally managed to get back to Vegas from the UK!

Having not been here for two years, we’ve noticed the changes. One thing which has disappointed us is that the bartenders and mixologists have been replaced with automated machines! The cocktails are weak and presentationally poor. We’re now trying to find out which hotels are still mixing cocktails by hand. Cosmopolitan and Fremont Street casinos are, so we will continue to frequent these establishments. Not sure if anyone else has asked this question?

By the way, we very much like the new Circa.

Thanks

Must Do Hikes In Vegas! Plus Healthy Food Spots

(Video Publishers Notes) Here’s some of the MUST DO HIKES in Las Vegas. Plus 3 awesome healthy food spots to bring food on a hike. It’s spring and summer is around the corner, so we better be ready. I always get asked how I stay so skinny even though my Youtube Channel is mainly about food. Well, I am still human, so I too have to eat healthy and exercise. So instead of going to the gym, let’s enjoy the beautiful weather and go on a hike. Las Vegas summers are pretty brutal, so we have to enjoy this spring weather while we can. I know most people know Las Vegas only for the Strip, but there are many other visitors that know there’s so much to do outdoors. I will be taking you on 3 different hikes that aren’t too far away. Please make sure to keep watching, but I’m taking you to Lone Mountain Trail, Ice Box Canyon Trail in Red Rock Canyon, and Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail. I hope you enjoy, and do hike at your own risk.

Newkirk’s Notes

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! – Well, I had this issue all prepped. Then, The Mirage got sold (signaling a fair amount of pending change), and the Oakland A’s baseball team made a bid deal about possibly buying The Tropicana and sticking a baseball stadium there.

What few are talking about is a major new trend quietly hinted at by MGM Resorts a couple of weeks ago, and apparently getting solidified by the plans the new owners of The Mirage has.

Hard Rock International Buys The Mirage – We finally know who the buyer is for The Mirage. It has been no secret that Hard Rock wanted to establish a presence on The Strip, and spent just over a billion dollars to do so. That just for the business and the buildings. Not the land nor the brand name.

This column, breaking down

– What’s Next For The Mirage?

– Are They Really Going To Build A Guitar-Shaped Hotel Tower In Front Of It?

– Have We Seen The End Of The “Mirage” Name In Las Vegas?

If “Supper Clubs” Are The Future of The Las Vegas Strip, We’ll Have Some More, Please

The most exciting thing about the current supper club trend on the Las Vegas Strip is that it’s not really about supper clubs. That term likely inspires images of old-school Vegas-casino dining spaces with vintage decor where you can enjoy cocktails and food and great live entertainment without paying for a ticket. There certainly are fragments of that experience at various venues that have popped up on the Strip during the past two years, but like the resorts that host them, these destinations are too special and different to fit together under a single banner.

I don’t do sports really, unless you count horses, however I look to see there is a line on even the Bahama Bowl in a week and a half. Using it as a hypothetical, how accurate do you think the line is on Middle Tenn and Toledo? I have a notion given the obscurity there might be some value (few would take a deep dive on Middle Tenn.).

Then again, since they are likely not to be bet heavily, perhaps the experts have their way and end up setting the line even if set incorrectly at first (not much in the way of dumb money).

Valley of Fire, Bowl of Fire both perfect for fall excursions

Southern Nevada’s favorable fall weather translates into good times in outdoor spaces that have fire in their names. Valley of Fire State Park and Lake Mead’s Bowl of Fire are two spots worth visiting on these cooler days. Vibrant and geologically stunning red rock formations are clustered in the state park about an hour north of Las Vegas, and along the far reaches of Northshore Road in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. In the months of May through September, sizzling temperatures can make both areas dangerous for those who want to roam around and soak in the scenery. The rocks retain heat like cast-iron cookware, and shade is rare. By contrast, precious days without winds too strong or temperatures too low in November through February are ideal for planning short or long hikes and simple or elaborate picnics.

David Copperfield reveals secret magic museum in new book – PHOTOS

The man who has made the Statue of Liberty vanish and walked through the Great Wall of China, strives to travel through time. Living in the moment won’t suffice for David Copperfield. This is true in his stage show at MGM Grand Theater, which employs black-and-white film clips depicting Copperfield’s father, and a time-worn, handwritten letter written decades ago. The illusionist’s zeal to span generations is celebrated on an even grander scale at his own private museum of magic. He’s dubbed it the David Copperfield International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts, but passersby won’t find an elaborate sign outside, or any indication at all of what lies inside the 40,000-square-foot, one-time warehouse just a few miles from his eponymous theater where he performs 15 shows a week.

Lady Gaga’s Back in Las Vegas! An Up-Close Look at Her Residency and Its Knockout Wardrobe

Before visiting Las Vegas for the first time-to see Lady Gaga’s “Jazz & Piano” residency, which has returned, post COVID-19 shut-down, to Dolby Live at the Park MGM-I thought of the city as a place powered by big corp hucksterism, cash burn and drunkenness, fish-hooking those prone to chasing long shot fantasies. In pop culture, Vegas’s scamminess has been lionized (the Ocean’s franchise), satirized (Ken Jeong’s Leslie Chow in The Hangover), and sexualized (Showgirls). And yeah, Vegas has packed heavyweight punches when it comes to entertainment (Céline, Britney, et al.), yet much of the city’s programming has felt manufactured for surface thrill in the same way a slot machine’s neon burns through the dimness of the casino floor, advertising its next payout ($12,650!). As such and for so long, Las Vegas was a no-go. But I was wrong to be so dismissive.

Where to Find Buffets Open Inside Casinos in Las Vegas

Culinary trailblazers back in the 1940s found a way to keep gamblers inside the resorts with cheap food, and lots of it. El Rancho Vegas, the Strip’s first resort, came up with the chuck wagon, the earliest version of the modern day buffet to turn up in Las Vegas. As UNLV’s Center for Gaming Research writes, “quantity was usually emphasized over quality.”

These New Attractions Have Las Vegas Buzzing Again

The city that was once the poster child for the crushing realities of the pandemic – sharp unemployment, casinos closed then curtailed, restaurants and bars starved for customers – is reclaiming the upper hand. Visitors are flocking back to Las Vegas, and parts of town, including Freemont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard, now look much like they used to before COVID-19.

The Palms’ New Owners Share Property Plans For The 1st Time

The Palms’ soon-to-be owners are ready to get to work. Several months after announcing a $650-million deal to buy the Palms from Red Rock Resorts, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians shared details for the first time publicly about its plans to reshape and reopen the off-Strip resort. San Manuel is targeting the first half of 2022 to reopen the Palms for the first time since the COVID-19 shutdown last spring, and the tribe has plans to run the property with a focus on gaming and Las Vegas locals. The San Manuel Gaming and Hospitality Authority, a subsidiary of the tribe, must receive gaming regulatory approval before it can own and operate the hotel-casino. Upon approval, which the authority hopes will come in November or December, San Manuel can begin working.

Newkirk’s Notes

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! – October is perhaps the most perfect weather month of the year here. While always a few days of exceptions, wind has been calm, and temps have been close to 80F. So, I sure can’t complain!

Paris/Bally’s Don’t Appear To Be Sold For Now – Caesars (Eldorado) Entertainment has been very open about wanting to sell a property. And, related or not, the food and shopping options at both Paris and Bally’s have seen tons of closures (especially if you include that ugly shopping area in front of Bally’s). This spurred the thought that the changes or contract non-renewals were in preparation for a sale.

So, who is this good for? MGM Resorts. Who is it bad for? Unfortunately, everyone else. Even if you are an MGM player.

Martha Stewart’s First Las Vegas Restaurant Is Coming to the Strip in 2022

Long rumored, but now confirmed by a construction permit filing, celebrity entrepreneur, TV personality, and culinary tutor Martha Stewart will debut her first restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip at Paris Las Vegas sometime in 2022. Early rumors, first floated by the VitalVegas blog in July, pointed to long-time Stewart friend and hip-hop star Snoop Dogg as a collaborator, but initial paperwork only names the venture as the Martha Stewart Restaurant. A spokesperson for parent company Caesars Entertainment previously chose not to confirm or deny any speculation about a restaurant from Martha Stewart opening at the French-themed casino and hotel. The resort allocated an estimated budget of $100,000 to “selectively” demolish an existing space on the Strip property to make way for the new restaurant.

Newkirk’s Notes

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! – COVID numbers are generally trending in the right direction here in Nevada, and if all goes well, the mask mandate will fall in a few weeks. Most likely just for the vaccinated (on a voluntary level). I have to believe it will be quite some time (think months) before casinos go back to a “no mask” rule based on security concerns.

Having said that, enforcement is very lax. Both in the tourism areas and in the rest of Las Vegas. Even with the mandate, I’m getting used to seeing unmasked people when I’m out on errands and such. Granted, I can’t speak for every business nor every gaming property. So, keep your mask with you. And as previously noted, please carefully check the vaccine proof and/or mask requirements before you buy tickets to any kind of entertainment.

The Sale Of The Cosmo – I wanted to give a little time for the dust to settle on this one. Few saw the Cosmo sale to the MGM Resorts coming. Don’t get me wrong: It wasn’t so much a shock. However, strong rumors had everyone from Tribal Gaming concerns to the Golden Nugget owner and CNBC Billion Dollar Buyer Tillman Fertitta showing a strong interest.

So, who is this good for? MGM Resorts. Who is it bad for? Unfortunately, everyone else. Even if you are an MGM player.

This column, breaking down

– Is this going to be a good thing for rated MGM players? Or, maybe not?

– What about the generous drink comps?

– Will Cosmo’s curated food and beverage suffer?

– Will there be employee shake-up, and how will customer service change?

Terry Fator’s Las Vegas Journey Continues At New Venue On The Strip

When Terry Fator took the stage of America’s Got Talent way back in 2007, no one could have predicted the trajectory his career would have taken. After all, it was just a man, a puppet and a trio of judges, one of whom obviously had no tolerance for ventriloquists. (We’re looking at you, David Hasselhoff!). Then Fator opened his mouth—er, rather, his puppet, Emma Taylor, opened her mouth, and out came the voice of Etta James singing “At Last.” Suddenly some of the judges resembled dummies themselves, mouths wide open in stunned disbelief.

Newkirk’s Notes

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! – Fortunately, it appears that while COVID is certainly an issue here (like in many other places), I see no indication that more restrictive changes are on the horizon. Granted, we’re talking about a situation that was originally “two weeks to flatten the curve”. So, results may vary.

As promised, we’re doing a report this issue on reasons you may wish to consider staying on the North Strip. We’ll be covering thoughts about Resorts World, The Sahara, and Stratosphere (aka The Strat).  Except for the steakhouse, Circus Circus won’t be referenced. It is run down and often over-run with kids. If it works for you, great. However, that isn’t part of this discussion.

What Is North Strip? – Generally, anything north of Sands/Spring Mountain Road. IE, Wynn Las Vegas and to The Strat. However, despite the fact that the walk from the car valet at Encore to the front door of Resorts World is 10 minutes (if that), we’re going to focus the three major resorts north of that location.

This column, breaking down

– What are the North Strip properties really like? Pros and cons?

– Is the location as bad as you’ve been told? The little factor many forget.

– Three North Strip steakhouses which are worth the trek.

– Staying North Strip? A long list of great locals priced restaurants you can walk to.

– The best way to get cheap football tickets for Allegiant Stadium that nobody is telling you about.

For example countless Members have had incredibly enjoyable and successful visits to Las Vegas during COVID simply because they were truly in the know, and not only knew what was happening, but what was on the horizon.

Saving them money, time and inconvenience.

At $34.80 for an entire year (only $2.90 per month), we distill down what you really need to know, so that your trip this spring, summer, or even later in the year turns out to be your best ever. And, we GUARANTEE it.

Especially in these unprecedented times, find out what it is like to ACTUALLY be in the KNOW this time around:

(Producer’s Notes) Join us on a unique adventure on the Las Vegas Strip over a sizzling hot Labor Day Weekend – a two-night stay at the Delano All-Suites Hotel, a sweet comp thanks to a lovely couple from California. We scored a Stay Well Premier suite on the 35th floor with a breathtaking Strip view, and you will see it all! Room tour, hotel tour, the Delano Beach Club…dinner at the incomparable Hussong’s Cantina in Mandalay Place, a second dinner at Lupo by Wolfgang Puck in the Mandalay Bay restaurant row, and…

A THIRD dinner, later in the week, at the historic and iconic Golden Steer Steakhouse up the road. This too was made possible by a generous gift card from fans of our channel, from Colorado. We got the deluxe history tour of the place from our host: the Rat Pack, fighters, mobsters, secret doors…and oh yeah, fabulous USDA Prime steak.

Las Vegas Buffets Are Back, Baby – The reopening of The Buffet at Bellagio is a bellwether of better times ahead for Sin City

Art at Allegiant Stadium tells story of Las Vegas, Raiders

Elvis is there, of course. So are Rat Pack poster boy Frank Sinatra, film goddess Marilyn Monroe and a bemused alien from Area 51, because no self-respecting collection of Vegascentric art could exclude icons like those. But it’s the context of the figures — Elvis wearing a Las Vegas Raiders jersey, Ol’ Blue Eyes dressed like a retro NFL coach in a Raiders cap, Marilyn falling out of a Raiderette uniform, and Alien Guy going all-in for the Raiders — that signal the collection’s purpose as a celebration, even a meshing, of Las Vegas history and Raiders tradition.
