Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – It is with a heavy heart that I bid adieu to summer. What a great run! Outdoor weather kicking in around mid-March and an unusually warm streak this past week keeping highs in the low-80’s F. Moving forward, we’re facing seasonable temps in the high 50’s and low 60’s. Another 2-3 weeks will probably bring the leaves falling off of the trees. I’m trading in the back patio for the front room couch and a warm space heater until March Madness rolls around.

This may sound strange, but many of the people I know, who truly love living here, prefer summer to winter. Once you make peace with the heat (and stay hydrated), it really ends up feeling preferable to chilly or cold weather. And yes, we do hit freezing overnights a few times per year.

Early Sunset- My Suggestions – With daylight savings time, it gets dark quickly here. We’re on the far eastern edge of Pacific Time and lose light earlier than what many of you may be used to. We’re in the middle of the desert at an elevation of right around 2000 feet, so once the sun goes down in the winter, it can get cold very quickly.

Right now, sunset is around 4:30 PM and will stay in that range until into January. (Our longitude and latitude result in very little change the sun sets from mid-November to mid-January). If you are headed out for the afternoon and have a bit of a hike back to your hotel before dinner, keep the dropping, post-sunset temperatures in mind when you set out.

On the flip side, a great activity this time of year is watching the sun set from atop the Stratosphere Tower. Make sure you are up there by 4 PM. Have a cocktail (or three) while watching both The Strip light up and the sun set over our jagged western mountains. The view is always spectacular, especially for those from areas of more sedate scenery). Then, since you are already halfway there, head downtown for dinner and more fun!

High Roller vs. The Neighbors – A recent local news story, Top 8 Tallest Structures in Las Vegas Valley, was an interesting read in light of the “High Roller” observation wheel under construction behind Imperial Palace and The Flamingo as part of Project Linq.

All-in-all, the following hotels are taller than the High Roller: Palazzo, Encore, Trump, Wynn, Cosmo, Aria and Elara (PH Westgate). This could be an advantage or disadvantage over time.

The views from the observation wheel may seem somewhat boxed in looking along The Strip. But, many staying on the upper floors of the hotels in question will have a great view of the wheel. This may prompt them to explore project Linq, look at the wheel, and perhaps take a ride. I guess we’ll know how it all plays out in a year (or so)! From the way things are looking, expect Project Linq to be Fremont Street Experience for hipsters. They make no bones about the fact that they are targeting a younger crowd.

The “Train To Somewhere” On Track Or Delayed? – We’ve reported extensively on the “Train To Nowhere” (a high speed rail line running from Las Vegas to either Victorville, CA or Palmdale, CA with hopeful connections into Los Angeles). We’ve also covered the X Train, which would use conventional rail lines already in place for a five hour journey where you could drink, dine, lounge, watch sports or just rest up on the trip.

X Train promoters had originally planned to have it operative last year, but are now gunning for 2013. They seemed to have acquired, or are in the process of acquiring (details are fuzzy), passenger cars, They are working with Amtrak — who will operate the train — to get the rights to run over the existing freight rails (which are controlled by two different rail lines).

An interesting twist to this story: You’d think that powerful, Nevada Senator, Harry Ried (D-NV) would get behind this, get Amtrak involved, and one way or the other, provide this added way to get people from the CA to the LV. Good for tourism, right?

Actually, Ried is neck-deep into support of the high-speed train to wherever (it ends up going to), and highly unlikely to put his support behind a viable alternative using existing infrastructure. In related news, Greyhoud Bus Lines (whom I worked for as a baggage handler during my college years) has announced non-stop Las Vegas – Los Angeles service featuring reserved leather seats, power outlets, and Wi-Fi at a price 1/2 to 1/3 what X Train is planning to charge.

Having said that, there is no travel like train travel. Roomy seats, ample opportunity to stretch your legs, and the ability to kick back and eat and drink, etc. I might take the trip just for the ride. We’ll continue to keep you up-to-date.

What We’re Watching – Vegas Videos You’ll Enjoy

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

We are coming to Las Vegas for Christmas (can’t wait – love Vegas at Christmas AND have tickets for Celine Dion’s new show!!), and just wondered how things are going with the taxis, now the new airport terminal is up and running? Is there still a problem with long-hauling or have things improved? We have been subject to this a few times and it is very annoying (after a long flight especially).

Thanks for all the Vegas info – very much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Heather

Ted Responds:

For all my moaning about our weather, I’m sure you’ll enjoy (what should be) plenty of sun and highs in the 50’s F around Christmas and have an fun time. You should really enjoy Celine, she continues to put on a great performance.

There are still isolated complaints about the wait times at customs, especially on Thursday and Sunday. However, the experience of the new Terminal 3 (T3) is night and day compared to the old one, all the way around. You’ll really be impressed.

Yes, the cab drivers are still evil people. Long-hauling, badgering for tips, acting like they know far more than they do (you really think that after their 12 hour shifts, they go party on The Strip?), and trying to get people to go to strip clubs that give them huge kick-backs. Now, they are lying to people using the new terminal and telling you that the freeway is quicker from that location.

The truth? T3 to Mirage via Paradise Road is 4 miles even. Via the tunnel? 8.4 miles. I’m not kidding. Check out the tunnel route on Google Maps and you can see how ridiculous it is! Simply inform the cab driver that you want 1. The shortest route 2. On surface streets. Cabbies are a necessary evil (I use them myself from time-to-time), but just be firm with them if they are trying to do a no-no.

Las Vegas Show Reviews

X Burlesque by Guy Chapman

X Burlesque – The Nights Remain Hot At The Flamingo – Las Vegas is known for having some of the most beautiful women in entertainment. From dance, to performance, to something a little more sensual and exotic, there is always something to see on stage. There is one show on the Strip that combines all of these elements into one package, providing a new and exciting experience for every nightly audience. Celebrating its 10th anniversary on the Strip this year, X Burlesque at the Flamingo Las Vegas brings performances that will leave very little to the imagination (or perhaps create more). X Burlesque is very much an ôadultö oriented show, as it is a topless revue. The women that come out to entertain for the evening are nothing short of gorgeous, and definitely put on a show that is very diverse and exciting.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – Usually this is where I’d tell you how we’re getting temps near 80 F and perfect evenings and how you should be here. (All of which is true). However, in light of recent U.S. weather events, it is a little harder to enjoy our good fortune.

Our hearts go out to the tens of millions affected by hurricane Sandy to varying degrees. We not only saw the destruction on TV, but as of this publication date, it appears somewhere upwards of 10 million people are still without power across the Northeast United States. No heat, no ability to keep food refrigerated… I can only imagine how tough it is some areas. We hope things get back to normal for as many as possible, as soon as possible.

coco austin peepshow las vegasThe Latest Bo Peep – Coco Austin, wife of rapper and actor Ice-T, has unveiled her look in the now famous Bo Peep outfit she’ll be donning starting December 3 in the long-running hit Las Vegas show Peepshow. She follows in the footsteps of actress Kelly Monaco, former Spice Girl Melanie Brown, Broadway’s Shoshana Bean, singer Aubrey O’Day, “Girl Next Door” (and mom-to-be) Holly Madison, and Holly’s understudy Angel Porrino. Word is that her performance in Peepshow will play a role in her hit reality series Ice Loves Coco.

In the meantime, Angel Porrino will fill in because of Holly’s early departure due to pregnancy. Honestly, if you are coming to town this month, you’ve got no excuse NOT to see Peepshow. Angel does a great job, singer extraordinaire Josh Strickland continues his role, and tickets through December 2 are 1/2 off if you click on the Peepshow graphic on the right sidebar of the newsletter or here: Peepshow Las Vegas Tickets.

Rhumbar Fall Cocktails – Rhumbar at The Mirage (a personal favorite of ours, seen above) has added a couple of fall cocktails: Apple Cobbler and Pumpkin Spike Martini. Each at $12, and this is a steal for craft cocktails with the strip side view.

If you can’t make it to Las Vegas, give them a try on your back porch on a crisp fall day!

Apple Cobbler:

4 apple cubes
1 oz simple syrup
1 oz lime juice
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 oz Pyrat XO Reserve Rum
Splash of Sprite

Muddle apples and simple syrup. Combine lime juice and rum. Shake and strain, then pour over ice in a double rocks glass. Add Sprite and garnish with apple slice.

Pumpkin Spice Martini:

2 oz Montecristo Spiced Rum
2 oz oven roasted pumpkin puree
1 oz Molasses
¥ cup orange juice
Pinch of all spice

No Kaboom Yet – Legal wrangling and arguments about more testing still plague the shuttered (and never completed) Harmon Tower (better known as the big billboard between Cosmopolitan and Crystals). I still believe we’ll see it imploded, but don’t hold your breath for it to happen for many, many months.

It’s A Wrap – The stalled Echelon project across from Wynn/Encore is going to at least get some beautification so that it quits looking like such an eyesore. A “wrap” of the building is planned (the same kind they put on a Las Vegas hotel that displays an ad on the side, or in this case most likely more similar to the wrap on the unfinished part of Palazzo which makes it at least look completed). They also plan some landscaping, which should make the general view in the area a little nicer.

Absolutely no plans are in the works to start reconstruction, the county has given them a 6 year extension, and my bet is that “when hell freezes over” may even be a better target date. I truly and simply don’t see Echelon (as it was planned with three hotel towers and thousands of rooms) being viable perhaps ever. The Strip can only absorb so many luxury rooms.

OneRepublic performs at the D Las Vegas

The D’s New Look – The D (formerly Fitzgerald’s downtown) is alive, well, and looking very impressive both inside and out (including the new rooms, which we gave you a sneak peek at a few weeks ago). If you have not yet been downtown, here’s a good look at the nightime facade from a couple weeks ago during an outdoor concert by band One Republic.

Downtown and Fremont Street are attracting 17 million visitors per year, which is the same amount as Disneyland and nearly 1/2 the entire total of visitors Las Vegas (as a whole) captures each year. I admit to getting a bit of a chuckle as some downtown naysayers as recently as this spring were downplaying downtown and commenting that the plans for the Fitzgerald remodel were all-but-irrelevant. He who laughs last…

Don’t bet against downtown. With the Lady Luck coming back to life next year, Fremont Street is becoming a “must do” on Vegas trips.

Speaking of… in our What We’re Watching segment, we feature Episode #1 of FSE Live, a bi-weekly show shot live on Fremont Street featuring the people and excitement that make downtown amazing. If you are in bad need of a Vegas fix, make sure you click to watch it.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

I travel to Vegas 1-2 times a year but this will be my first time for Thanksgiving. I’ve already booked 4 nights at the Tropicana for $160 so our lodgings are set. I know that several restaurants, shows etc.. have Thanksgiving specials & I was wondering if anything has been announced yet?

You guys always seem to have information even before the direct websites. This will be my sister’s second visit and I want to get as much bang for our buck as possible.

Thanks you in advance,

S Watson from Cleveland

Ted Responds:

We always put out information for holidays and special events the minute we get them. In the top area of the newsletter, we have the links (when available) to information pertaining to these dates and Thanksgiving announcements have started coming in.

We do wish we had even more information to get out weeks (and months) ahead of events and holidays. I know that many of you plan your trips months in advance and it would be helpful. However, we can only move information along to you when we get it and for some reason, the hotels (and restaurants) simply don’t seem to plan special events very far out. Although, we’ve noticed that they are improving.

As a rule of thumb, every Las Vegas hotel restaurant including the buffets have a special Thanksgiving menu and (in addition to their regular fare). It is a popular four-day weekend here as many far-flung families gather. They can enjoy the company of each other, but also with something for just about everybody to do during the non-family times.

One word of caution: Lines can be LONG for restaurants on Thanksgiving Day. If you are going to a sit-down restaurant that takes reservations, make them ahead of time. If doing a buffet, put it off until later in the day for the least wait time.

Hi Ted!

We just got back from a 4 day trip to Vegas and had a great time! We stayed on Fremont St. at the D, and it was a great experience. The room was nice with a great view. The people were very nice. The price was right too! I’ll stay there again!

We didn’t even bother going to the Strip. All in all, it was great experience.

Love your newsletter and all of the info that you give!

Mary

Hi Ted,

Just got back from my annual trip. Lost a lot, but had a blast. Enjoyed zip line at Bootleg Canyon. Flew Southwest airlines, good experience. Pay the extra $10 for the early boarding.

Enjoyed Fremont St the best. Slots paid better. Two great buffets, M casino and Green Valley. Disapointed that fish tanks seen on Tanked have been removed from a few locations.

Can’t wait till next year.

Gary from Ingleside, Illinois

Ted Responds:

Thanks for the great reports, not much to add to that. People are loving downtown!

Las Vegas Show Reviews

Rod Stewart by Sarah Jane Woodall

Young At Heart With Energy To Spare, Rod Stewart’s Performance Doesn’t Disappoint – Vegas once had a reputation as the place where popular entertainers go to die – the stereotype of the fat, faded star languishing in a leisure suit, warbling golden oldies in a lounge was sadly appropriate as little as ten years ago. The town has since gone through something of a rebirth, with currently popular acts making regular stops here – though we still get our fair share of the classics. Rod Stewart is one of these regularly appearing classic rock idols – but his show is about as far from the leisure suit/lounge shtick as you can get.

Kevin Burke: Mind Blowing Comedy by Terri D’Richards

Kevin Burke: Mind-Blowing Comedy Brings Hilarity To Hooters – Armed with a deck of cards, a sharp wit and a staple gun, Kevin Burke wages war on generic comedy show formats, creating his own unique hybrid style by reaching into a large bag of comedic/clairvoyant tricks in order to amuse on more than one level. The self-declared “world’s only psychic comedian” makes good use of an intimate venue, interacting with his audience and keeping the proceedings casual. His relaxed demeanor belies an ambitious schedule, performing “Mind Blowing Comedy” at Hooters Hotel Casino, as well as starring in the solo comedy Defending the Caveman on the Strip at Harrah’s.

Vegas! The Show by DW Grant

Vegas! The Show! – Step Back In Time To Real Entertainment – From the Neon Grave Yard to The Copa Room to The Planet Hollywood, Vegas! The Show delivers Las Vegas the way it should be.

Vegas! The Show begins appropriately in the Neon Grave Yard and is introduced by Ernie, the janitor, played by the musicalÆs best performer, Eric Jordan Young, rightly called by the critics ôa one man force of natureö and an ôoutsized talent.ö He is definitely more than a force and has the talent to carry this show to its conclusion.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Compublisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – We’re continuing to bask in ouráIndian Summer although next week we return to our seasonable 70’s with overnights in the 50’s. For many of you from cool weather places, it will feel great. If you are from a warm weather spot and your blood is still a little thin (like mine), long pants and even a light jacket might not be bad to pack for the night.

Two Wheels Battle On – Both the “High Roller and “Sky Vue” observation wheels claim to be moving forward with construction. This among various rumors and questions to the contrary (more so with the Sky Vue). Right now, there isn’t much to look at on either project, but both are saying that construction on key components is underway at spots around the US and around the world. We’ll keep you in the loop, although don’t hold your breath. Completion for both appears to be a good year away.

Sports Bettors, Listen Up! – Our friends at the Vegas Video Network have launched the show “The Odds Couple” airing live at Noon Pacific time on Fridays and then available on demand. Hosted by professional sports bettor Scott Pritchard and headlining comedian Anthony Padilla, this is NOT your typical “give us $50 for our pick of the week” show.

Both are funny guys, but serious about sports, the show originates just steps from the Las Vegas Strip, these guys really do bet the games, and there is no charge to enjoy the show.áCatch it live at noon (Pacific Time) on Vegas Video Network or on-demand at The Odds Couple

Wayne Newton Project Dead – Finger pointing and intensive legal wrangling has forced the attempt to turn Wayne Newton’s Casa de Shenendoah into a “Western Gracelend” where visitors can tour the historic house and ranch into a dead end. Full details at Entity that purchased Wayne Newton’s property placed in bankruptcy

Flamingo Wildlife Habitat Bird Killing – Earlier in this issue, we noted (with photo) how The Flamingo had adopted two rescue birds and how the habitat had been recently upgraded. Unfortunately, this was followed by some very unfortunate news. Two college students visiting the habitatáallegedly went after an exotic African guineafowl, beheaded it, and tossed it around like a frisbee.

We posted this both on our Twitter and Facebook pages and I think this Facebook comment response from one of our readers T J Mecomber Russi summed it up best:

Honestly I hope they fry the little bastards. These are the kind of people who become serial killers. No wonder they’re going to law school, trying to figure out how to get away with it no doubt. Perhaps with a felony conviction they can explain to their families why the phrase “do you want fries with that” is going to become so important to their futures.

Vegas For (Marital) Cheaters – An adult dating site (which we won’t bother to give publicity to) polled their members and found out that over half of them had cheated in a Las Vegas hotel. They claimed that Las Vegas is economically dependent on suffering marriages and are happy to overlook infidelity. Really? Like no one has ever cheated in any hotel anywhere else?

No question Las Vegas is a great place for romance (and to rekindle one if things are lagging). However, I’ve pretty much had it with people and companies trying to connect themselves with our fair city just to make a splash. I’m sure that if you want to have an illicit tryst, you’ll have no shortage of hotels just about everywhere looking to take your business. Speaking of romance…

12-12-12 Looking To Be Hot Wedding Day – Never one to miss a marketing opportunity, Las Vegas wedding chapels are going nuts with bookings for December 12, 2012. This will be the final of 12 years of this type of number sequence this century (started with January 1, 2001 — 01-01-01). If you or someone you know is thinking about taking the “leap of love in Las Vegas” before the end of this year, book soon. Starting next year, you’ll have to stick to those “mundane” popular wedding days such as New Years Eve, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day.

Members Mania – I believe we’re finally going to bring Members Mania (reader questions and comments) back next issue. I’ve been dealing with getting projects rolling that have their genesis (of the ideas) dating back to the mid-2000’s and we’re finally in a position to move so many things forward. Everything takes time, and we’re a small, independent company. Only so many hours in the day to do so much.

Hope You Are Enjoying This Issue!
