Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:Hello from Las Vegas! We had a little unexpected hiatus from publishing. I tried to play “Mr. Fix It” with my computer and wiped out about two weeks of email, which included concerts and New Year’s updates and business email … you name it. (No … they don’t allow me near the big, main computers that run this show and I don’t blame them).

With New Year’s Eve bearing down on us, we’ll be publishing twice weekly through the end of the year to keep you up-to-date. Significant events have been added to our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve section. Oh, did I mention it’s been 70 (F)á for the past two weeks?

See the Grand Canyon in a Jet Helicopter! For years Maverick Helicopters has been providing a true VIP Helicopter experience of the Grand Canyon. Or just enjoy all the photos in our Las Vegas Attractions and Scenery photo gallery. We hope to get 2004 Christmas photos online this week.Gambling Talk: Blackjack Deals and Traps – with Victor H. Royer. Blackjack has changed drastically in the past decade. Can Blackjack be beaten? Do you play single deck games because you’ve been told they’re the best? Did you know that the same casino can deal blackjack games with different rules at each table? Play informed. This week, click to read his article on Blackjack Deals and Traps.

He’s also one of the most hated drivers on NASCAR. So to all you Junior or Gordon or Stewart or other driver fans: Drink your Bud, stop by the Home Depot, buy some Dupont paint, then come cheer your guy and boo the #97 car in his hometown during 2005 Cup stop here in Las Vegas on March 13, 2005.

We have some great ticket and lodging packages, but they are going quickly as it is one of the first races of the season. Click to our Las Vegas NASCAR Nextel Cup 2005 page or call (Toll Free US) 800-696-5721 for more info. Las Vegas has traditionally been the second highest rated broadcast of the season (behind Daytona). This year, grab family and friends and see it live!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Fall has settled in and the air is sunny and clear after a couple of stormy weeks. Big announcement this week is our Trip Report Giveaway:

The winning doesn’t have to stop when you get back home! You came to Vegas. You probably had a blast and told all your friends about it. Hey, we’re your friends too and fellow AccessVegas.com readers would love to hear all about it!

Two great ways to win when you post a Las Vegas Trip Report to our Trip Report Forums:

1. Every person posting a trip report during a calendar month will be entered into a random drawing for a Green $25 Casino Chip from the Las Vegas Strip casino of their choice! This is not a promotional chip. This is an actual $25 chip that you can cash in or bet at the tables.

What a great souvenir, and something to keep you excited about visiting Las Vegas again until you get here. Plus, imagine starting off your next trip with a “bet on us.”

2. Readers will be able to recommend (vote for) the various trip reports and the one with the most votes for the month also wins a Green $25 Casino Chip!

What are you waiting for? Click over to our Trip Report Forums and tell us about you recent trip!

Vegas For The Holidays – ‘Twas the week before Christmas … and a great time to be in Las Vegas! Crowds are light, rates are down, and for a rare week, things are more peaceful. Plan a few days here with us. It’s a good excuse to force yourself to finish that holiday shopping early! If you can’t make it this year, check out our Bellagio Botanical Gardens Christmas display photos from last year.

Airport Parking Reservations – Why didn’t someone think of this before??? You know how it is to get to the airport and hunt for parking. Especially during peak times like the holidays. Airport Parking Reservations fixes that problem. You can reserve your parking online, guaranteed and often at a discount. I love this concept! One less thing to worry about when you travel. Check out Airport Parking Reservations.

Mandalay Bay Shark Reef Photos – We’ve added photos to our huge Las Vegas photo gallery of the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef. See the photos and read about the Shark Reef.

Blackjack Birthday – There is only one place to celebrate your one-and-only 21’s Birthday: Las Vegas! And our friends at BlackJack Birthday have you set up. Imaging having a VIP access pass to the hottest clubs, shows, attractions and everything else you want to do when you turn 21 in Las Vegas. You’d pay more than $500 for all this high rolling excitement if you had to pay for it.

Or you can let us hook you up with the BlackJack Birthday pass, personalized with your name that you can wear like a rock star for a nominal fee of $21.00 to cover shipping, handling, and personalization. Visit BlackJack Birthday before you turn 21, and turn all your friends onto it as well!

VegasTalk Radio - The only Internet Radio variety show about Las Vegas broadcast from Las Vegas Vegas Talk – You can listen online Friday mornings at 9 AM Pacific, or listen to the archives anytime! This week, an Interview with Frank Marino, headliner star of La Cage at The Riviera. Frank is the longest running headliner in Las Vegas (20 years).

The “Vegas Confidential” call with Norm Clarke – voted “Most Connected” person in town and daily columnist for the Review Journal and author of the best selling Norm Clarke! Sin City’s Ace Insider 1,000 Naked Truths

Desert Inn Implosion – The time and date are now set: This Tuesday Nov. 16’th, 2004 at 2:30 AM (that is Monday late night) the remaining two towers of the Desert Inn will come down. This is a date change from an earlier report.

Manhattanization Of Las Vegas – The 90’s brought the era of the megaresort to Las Vegas. This decade brings the high rise boom. Upwards of 30 condo projects are on the drawing boards, and MGM Mirage just announced an urban metropolis on the 66 acres between Bellagio and Monte Carlo.

Frankly, the term Manhattanization is a little off-target. This boom more reflects the development happening in coastal areas where high-rise condos are built with ocean or gulf views around upscale shopping and dining areas to attract well-to-do baby boomers and young professionals. We don’t have an ocean. Instead the Vegas Strip view is our focal point.

Gambling Talk: Austin Powers Video Slots – All these crazy video slots can be confusing. How do you win? Our gaming expert Victor H. Royer will help you understand these games! This week, click to read his article on Austin Powers slots.

Show Coupons – Remember our coupons for the free Michael Johns Comedy Hypnosis Show and $9.95 coupon for Spotlight: The show at Bourbon Street Hotel Casino.

New Year’s Eve – Events and headliners are starting to trickle in. Click to our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve page for the latest!

Superbowl … Valentines Day … Summer 2005 – Readers often write and ask us what will be happening months in advance. Hell … if we knew, you’d be the first to know! Casinos are lousy at planning events with any kind of advance notice. New Year’s Eve events are just starting to trickle in, and we are just eight weeks away.

Note to gaming properties: Visiting Las Vegas is a major event for many, and something that they plan months in advance. You guys should be embarrassed at the last minute chaos that is the norm. Plan ahead so your PR people can let us and other media know, and we can better keep your visitors informed!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

If you were looking for our promised special issue this past Sunday, we apologize. We have been upgrading our newsletter software to handle the great demand … and it took a little longer than expected to get the bugs out.

Been a very rare week this week, with rain, clouds, and highs barely reaching 70 F. I am personally putting this lousy weather back on an Alaska Airlines flight tonight and sending it back to the Pacific Northwest where it belongs! (No hate mail, please. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, an area that is spectacularly beautiful).

VegasTalk Radio - The only Internet Radio variety show about Las Vegas broadcast from Las Vegas Vegas Talk – is the new internet radio show just for the Las Vegas tourist! Each week, guests talk about what’s hot with celeb sightings, gambling tips, show reviews, dining information and more from some of the top Las Vegas experts. I mean the big names you’ve seen on those Travel Channel shows or read in our local papers.

We are pleased to be a sponsor, and our Vegas Minute is included in the show. We also produce the convention segment so you can know where the crowds may or may not be when you visit!

Vegas Talk airs live at 9:00 AM Pacific time on Friday, but each show is archived and can be listened to anytime. Enjoy this week’s show and the archives so you can come to Las Vegas informed!

The Manhattan Express Roller Coaster now offers the All-In-One Fun Package, available for $39.99. The package includes an all day unlimited roller coaster ride wristband; a souvenir T-shirt; a 5 x 7 souvenir picture; choice of hot dog, cheeseburger or slice of pizza; small fries and small drink at Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs; an all day unlimited use wristband for the Coney Island Emporium for participating games; 500 points at the redemption center and a 20-inch clown doll.

The Manhattan Express is located at New York, New York Hotel Casino and is the worldÆs first coaster to feature a 180-degree heartline twist and dive maneuver, providing riders with heart-stopping action and thrills. The roller coaster is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m.

Gambling Talk – You’ve heard about basic strategy and proper play. This is where a gambler follows the most scientific way to play a given game for the best expected outcome. But are there times you should break the rules? Read our gambling expert Victor H. Royer’s article A Little Math and Some Reality

Fashion Show Mall – Phase III opens Friday Oct. 21, 2004. All of that massive construction in front of Caesars Palace is finally about done! We’ll have a report soon.

Spotlight: The Show
plus Value Shows and Coupons

á

We read our feedback, and many of you are saying “Hey Ted, it’s nice to hear about The Bellagio and Celine Dion, but not all of us fly in on a Lear jet. How about some of the value that Las Vegas has always been famous for?”

We went out and lined up some great deals for you, including a couple of coupons just for our readers. One of which is for a free show!

Larry G. Jones: $6.95 Includes One Drink (no coupon needed) – The Man of 1002 Voices is back at The Plaza Hotel Casino downtown nightly at 6:00 PM (dark Friday). Larry is awesome. His fast moving show will leave you laughing non-stop and his impressions are dead on. If Danny Gans is a bit our of your price range, treat yourself to the equally talented Larry G. Jones. Click for more info: Larry G. Jones: May Of 1002 Voices

Spotlight: $9.95 With Our Coupon – We just saw this show at Bourbon Street Hotel Casino and really enjoyed it. So I strong-armed producer Will Roya (who also produces the Michael John’s Comedy Magic Show below) and said “Cough it up for our readers … We want a great price.” (OK, I actually bought him dinner).

If you love all the high-energy specialty acts in the big production shows, spotlight is the show to see with the best up-and-coming talent in town. On any particular night you may see the world’s best magicians, jugglers, comics, impersonators, dancers, singers, contortionists, fire eaters, Elvis and surprise guest stars.

This is usually a $39.95 ticket, but click to get our Spotlight Coupon and you are in for $9.95. Can’t beat that. Well … maybe we can …

Michael Johns Comedy Hypnosis Show: Free With Our Coupon – This is the adults-only, late evening show at Bourbon Street. This is the same show that Johns has been performing around the country in comedy clubs to amazing rave reviews. Fast paced, comedy club style humor with cutting edge hypnosis techniques make this a fun event.

This is usually a $39.95 ticket, but click to get our Michael Johns Comedy Hypnosis Show Coupon and you are in for $0.00. That is right. Free. No bull. Nothing else to do. Print the coupon, enjoy the show free just for being one of our readers!

While we are in value mode, good time to remind you that Bourbon Street continues to have a great Steak and Lobster Special, served 24/7 for only $7.77. Thirsty? Buckets of Corona are only $10.00. Bourbon Street is one block from The Bellagio. See our Las Vegas Strip Map for location.

The new Havana Honeys game is played similarly to the popular “Blazing 7’s” slot machines with a $.25 cent denomination of play and a three-pay line winning combination.

Havana Honeys machines feature special Cuban cigar-themed pay line symbols such as the Havana Honeys logo, individual Havana Honeys cigars and honey pots filled with cigars. Example of paybacks are three quarters and three Havana Honeys symbols lined up on the pay line will hit a jackpot of $250. The new bank of six Havana Honeys machines is conveniently located on the Casino Level, 5000 wing, directly across from the Tropicana’s aptly themed cigar lounge, Havana Hideaway.

Harvest Festival Theme at Bellagio Botanical GardensBellagioÆs Conservatory has been transformed to evoke memories of autumn – long strolls through brilliant colored leaves and the scent of warm apple cider. The gardens, featuring an old-fashioned rustic mill with a rotating water wheel, giant, prize-winning pumpkins and a haystack of Dogwood branches and bittersweet berries floating through a misty fog, become the idyllic canvas to FallÆs festivities. Stay tuned to this newsletter … we’ll have photos soon!

Imperial Palace, Bud Light to Host True Legend of Rodeo – Hall-of-Fame Bull Rider “Tuff” Hedeman Holds Signing. Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame bull rider Richard “Tuff” Hedeman is a true legend in his sport, and what better place for a Legend to hold an autograph signing than the home of Legends – the Imperial Palace.

Hedeman will appear for an autograph session at the Imperial Palace’s sidewalk-front club Tequila Joe’s on Friday, Oct. 22, starting at 2 p.m. The first 100 guests will receive an autographed Bud Light T-shirt. Ring In 2005 In Las Vegas!
New Year’s Eve Insider Tips

Join us for 2004 / 2005 for the largest, longest street party for New Year’s Eve in the United States.

New York you say? No booze. Sub-freezing weather. People who show up 18 hours early to be crammed against barricades for a 60 second ball drop. That’s not a party, my friends.

Las Vegas? Four miles of the most famous street in the world closed down for pedestrians to celebrate the new year in a neon glow like no other. For one night, you are in the worlds biggest nightclub, no cover charge, and a half-million dollars worth of fireworks going off over your head!

The big party is outside on the actual Las Vegas Strip where they close the road to traffic.

But if an indoor, organized event is more your style, then you’ll enjoy one of the major concerts or resort parties and balls taking place New Year’s Eve!

Special Note: Many of the concerts and hotel parties and balls are not announced until late November or December.
We strongly suggest booking your room now and then making party plans as events and concerts are announced. Stay tuned to this newsletter for event info!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Where has the time gone? It’s been a month since I last wrote and I’ve missed everyone! However, we’ve literally tripled the amount of information we add to AccessVegas.com so stop by every few days and check out the What’s New section of our front page.

We are working on a beautiful, upgraded design for AccessVegas.com as well as upgrading behind the scenes to bring you a lot more streaming Las Vegas video.

We are also very close to splitting the newsletter up (as promised): A new 4-5 times a week update for avid Vegas fanatics, and back to our weekly version for those looking for more basic, helpful vacation planning.

Lost of giveaways ready to go when we get the bugs out of our contest software. We had to stop running giveaways for a while because we have so many readers, we could no longer process entries by hand. Plus lots more cool stuff I don’t even want to get into yet …

The Weather Is Here – If you watched the NASCAR race form Las Vegas, you saw how perfect the weather is this time of year. Highs around 80 with very comfortable temperatures throughout the late evening. Spring and fall are prime time in Las Vegas so click to check room rates now.

Celine Dion Tickets Available – Tickets for her June shows are available, but going very, very quickly. Check out our June Headliners and Concert Calendar for details. Speaking of …

Entertainment Capital of the World – Las Vegas continues to live up to this billing. Our Headliners and Concert Calendar is jammed with entertainment. Check it out!

101 Las Vegas Top 10 Lists – Las Vegas Review-Journal gossip columnist Norm! (Clarke) is getting ready to put out this interesting book. This is the man who was first to break stories like Britney Spear’s Las Vegas wedding.

I had the pleasure of addressing a group of business leaders recently, and Norm was among them. Had a nice chat with him afterwards and we’ll be looking forward to his book. We have a number of other Las Vegas and gaming related books we read to pass time during our unusually cold winter here (it actually snowed twice, although brief), and we’ll be reviewing those soon as well.

Binion’s – After numerous legal hurdles and every monkey wrench imaginable, Binion’s Horseshoe downtown will be re-opening soon. But will it be like the old Binion’s we all knew and loved? We’ll let you know.

Roy Horn Update – Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn is up around walking a bit with the assistance of a wheeled walking aid, according to multiple sources. We wish him well in his continuing recovery. There is word of a Siegfried and Roy worldwide TV special down the road as his recovery progresses.

Happy Birthday Lance – What do Osama Bin Laden, James Earl Ray, Prince Edward, Chuck Norris and Sharon Stone all have in common? They share a birthday with Las Vegas’ own Master Magician Lance Burton who just celebrated his 44’th birthday March 10. Next issue, we provide you an updated review of Lance’s great show! lance burton master magician magic

We Will Rock YouParis Las Vegas appears ready to bring this production to Las Vegas on the heels of the very successful run of Mamma Mia! at Mandalay Bay. More details as they become available.

Valley Air Express – new air service now allows you to “fly” up I-15 between Las Vegas and Victorville, CA. Because they are a “charter” type airline and fly into Henderson Executive Airport (about 15 minutes from The Strip), you avoid the delays of security, plus the long drive through the desert. We’ll try to scam a ride soon to tell you more, as they look to expand into serving Riverside as well. Check them out online.

New Year’s Eve Availability – We still have a few New Year’s Eve rooms right on The Strip at Casino Royale. Dead center (between Harrah’s and Venetian) for all the action, fireworks and festivities!

The price? Only $149 a night. (Try to find anything near The Strip at twice that). The catch? None except booking Dec. 30 to Jan 1 … two nights. (Standard requirement for weekends or holidays at most hotels).

Here you go .. all wrapped up and ready to open:

Red Hot Special New Year’s Eve Deal!

á

Casino Royale in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip: Middle of the Action, middle of The Strip, middle of the Fireworks and you are there for only $149 a night (2 night min) on New Year’s Eve. Across from Mirage, next to Venetian, — You can’t afford to stay home!

Don’t write and complain if you miss out. We touted this in last week’s newsletter and availability is now very limited. Unless your brother is some million dollar gambler, you won’t find a deal like this this so close to New Year’s here.

If you can’t make it here, enjoy watching Dick Clark show some 1983 Barry Manilow clip and talk about the wind chill factor in New York on ABC TV. Yawn.

FOX network will ring in the New Year’s here … at 9 PM our time (faking a midnight celebration for those on the east coast, broadcast on tape to the west coast).

The 13 minute fireworks spectacular we’ll have at midnight … stretching all four miles of The Strip … will not be part of that show. We’re doing it at midnight Pacific time live!

Thinking of coming? Check out our New Year’s Eve Las Vegas archives of photos and streaming video to help you decide (or resolve to plan for next year).

If you make it here, say hello. We’ll be out shooting and you just might be one of the stars of this year’s coverage!

Featured Review: Bellagio Conservatory Christmas Photos

The Bellagio has been famous since opening for the beautiful conservatory, which features thousands of live plants arranged in a stunning and every changing display for each season.

Christmas is no different! The current display brings the warmth and good cheer of the season to life with light and vivid colors. The theme includes oversized tree ornaments in red, gold, and silver both hanging overhead and around the conservatory surrounding a huge decorated and lit tree.

For those visiting in the next couple of weeks (another great excuse to do New Year’s Eve here), make sure to stop in and enjoy this. For those who won’t be with us the next couple of weeks, you can enjoy this slice of Christmas in Las Vegas in our Bellagio Christmas Photo Gallery. (View all four pages for different scenes).

Send As Online Postcard – Forgot to spread some holiday cheer? Did you keep a limited Christmas card list because of the price of postage? Are you just bored waiting for the workday to end and Christmas Eve to settle in?

All of the photos in our photo galleries can be sent as online postcards, including the Bellagio Christmas photos above. Simply click on the photos to see a full size version. When that page opens, click the Send As Postcard link at the bottom of any photo. No charge, no registration. Enjoy!

PS: Guys … your girlfriend or wife will love one of these photos sent as a romantic “thinking of you” but don’t leave you buddies out. Send them online postcards they will appreciate: Mermaids from Palms Skin Lounge (from last summer), Crazy Girls showgirls, or the go-go dancers at Tequila Joe’s!

We drive to the top of a mountain where the view is spectacular. This is one of 11 photo stops!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It is a sunny 71 (F) today and that weather is supposed to hold through the weekend. Plenty off time to get over and enjoy a couple days sun and fun.

The message boards are starting to fill up with some really great posts and we thank you. Always takes a couple of months to get new boards cranking. As an added benefit, we are continuing to post press releases in the appropriate areas of the boards.

Bellagio Fountains Wallpaper and Screensaver – We keep adding great new things to our photo galleries (at no charge, of course). I know my frustration when looking for great photos online and it’s always nice to have cool photos on your screen when you aren’t using the computer.

Our latest addition is the Bellagio fountains wallpaper and screensaver. Choose from 11 stunning views to use as wallpaper and download the screensaver to enjoy them rotating on your screen. As an added bonus, this screensaver fits on a floppy disk and is perfect even for those who may not be Vegas fans but love waterscapes and spectacular fountains. Feel free to make copies for friends or send them directly to the photo galleries.

Reader Feedback

Frank Pepe from Connecticut wrote:

I have visited Las Vegas twelve times since 1997. Since I made my first trip (which I was not excited about) I fell in love with this place. Now five years later we are planning to move to Las Vegas in January of 2003.

I have to tell you, and all the other readers out there, that your news letters are the most informative about what’s going on in L.V. I have subscribed to others in the past but have cancelled them since I started reading yours. My new nickname here is the Las Vegas King because people come to me to ask questions on where to stay and what to do. And of course, I send them your site to read more info than what I give them. Keep up all the great work!

Paul from Hermosa Beach, California wrote:

I love what you’re doing with the newsletter and the site. You are giving me what I want, and constantly adding new things that I want and didn’t even realize that I wanted. As a Southern Californian and self-admitted Vegas fanatic (I’ve been there exactly 51 times), as well as a Ph.D. who likes some substance and correct grammar in what I read, I am very satisfied with your work.

Thanks for the kind words! In my effort to get this out, we sometimes have a grammatical error but try to keep them to a minimum. More importantly, we are really proud of the things we continue to add. The message board is starting to pick up steam (they always take a few months), the new entertainment calendar makes it easier to map out the concerts and headliners, and the new photo gallery is the largest online for Las Vegas that we know of. And we still have a few tricks up our sleeve …

Thanks to Paul and everyone else for reading!

Angie Reid from the UK wrote:

Some friends and I are getting together over Christmas in Vegas, but one of the friends is coming from the UK, and was wondering about getting British travelers cheques and cashing them at a casino. Are there any problems or should she get US travelers cheques, and if she gets UK cheques will she get a better exchange rate like we poor lowly Canadians do at the casino cashiers?

Thanks and love the new format of the newsletter. I tell everyone who has questions about Las Vegas to subscribe.

OK readers … I know that most casinos will exchange money but I live her so I’m not the expert. What are your experiences? Where did you find the better rates, and what kind of checks did you buy?

Because of limited newsletter space, please post your comments to our message boards in our Travel Questions/Trip Suggestions – Xchanging Money area. Angie will thank you, I thank you in advance, and we will note the highlights in a couple weeks so that others can read and enjoy your help!

For those of you who just can’t seem to go home with any of the casino’s money — or your own — after several days of battling the video poker:á here’s a hint. Set goals for each session, reach them and walk around for a few hours, then play again if you’d like. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people tell me that they wished they had quit when they were ahead.

That is some fantastic advice, and we’d love to hear from you about your gambling experiences. What games do you like to play? Do you have any techniques that you feel help you win, or ways to watch your money so you can be a winner, but not lose too much? Or did you play and play and play and never, ever see any luck on one trip? We need to hear both the good and bad and you can give us your inside scoop in our Message Boards Gambling Forum.

Is it possible to also put some details regarding the current monorail system. I know in previous it ran from Bellagio to New York/New York and thought there were plans to expand it along the strip. Or if there is information on your website – let me know where to look. Thanks for your help.

There is some confusion on this issue so let’s clear it up. Presently, free trams/monorails run between:

The current Strip monorail under construction will run from the MGM to Sahara with stops along The Strip as well as the Las Vegas Convention Center. Completion is scheduled for early 2004, and work is very much underway on the entire stretch of track. Right now, it is operational between MGM and Bally’s and you can ride for free.

Just spent 5 nights at Excalibur and it was a pleasant surprise. The rooms were clean and had the basics. We got some pretty good rates too. The biggest surprise was that everyone (employees) we had contact with was extremely helpful and gracious, which is certainly not the case everywhere!

We used to enjoy the buffet at the Rio, but a disappointment these days. More reasonable is the buffet at their sister hotel – Harrah’s.

I had a terrific trip last week that was highlighted by two great nights at The Orleans and Gold Coast. I usually stay on the strip at higher end properties (Caesars, Bellagio, Venetian…depending on whether its biz or pleasure) but always do my serious gambling off-strip.

I did quite well on LIR (Let It Ride) at The Orleans and really well at Gold Coast on Video Poker (4A w/2) and Wheel of Fortune $1 slots (1G). I also had a great craps sessions Monday afternoon at The Flamingo. (Hadn’t been there in years but plan on making it a regular part of future trips … especially when I stay at Caesars).

I dragged several friends to the Orleans and they loved it. Not surprisingly, they all won. None of them won anything at their respective hotels and were amazed at how nice these off-strip properties were.

Gold Coast looks gorgeous, BTW. They really spruced up the place.

There is a lot to be said for the “Near Strip” and “Off Strip” casinos. Many regular visitors make it a point to hit their favorites, party with the local’s and take advantage of the better odds. If that describes you, tell us all about your favorite local’s casinos in our Off-Strip and “Local’s Forums!

In your recent news letter I was given an opportunity to vote on what I though was the best hotel downtown. However, all the casino’s were not listed. I knew before even looking at the voting results that the Golden Nugget would be far and away voted the best Casino. I realize that people want a little luxury when visiting Las Vegas and the Golden Nugget is best at providing that. However, for your best chance of winning money my choice would have to be the El Cortez.

Our poll gives us 10 slots. We on the staff have to decide the top ten to get voted on, and past that it is all reader’s input. While the El Cortez has loose slots, cheap food, and a recent remodel, we knew people would be the least familiar with it.

For what is it worth, I drop by the El Cortez and have a couple of beers and play some craps every few months. It is somewhat of a best kept secret. We do certainly have it and the rest of the downtown casinos mapped on our Las Vegas Hotels Downtown Fremont St. Experience page.

See you on the boards!
