FEATURE STORY: Restaurant Reviews by Guest Columnist Les Kincaid

Pasta Shop & Restaurante’
2495 East Tropicana, Las Vegas 89119
451-1893
Italian Dinner 5-10 pm
Monday thru Saturday, closed Sunday
Mastercard/Visa accepted

This charming Italian restaurante’ is a true symbol of the American way. Chef
David Alenik grew up in the east coast and attended a formal culinary school after coming home from the Navy. He gained quite good experience in New York and eventually moved to Las Vegas. He certainly has been able to create a reputation that any Chef would be proud of, working for two highly visible hotels upon arrival to Las Vegas. Then, when that burning desire to create and operate his own establishment was discussed with his family, both he and his brother decided to offer Las Vegans great fresh homemade pasta at food establishments all over the city. They do a big business here in town allowing restaurants that insist on fresh food for their guests to select from a large list of pastas they can use.

They also opened this intimate dining room that has standing room only from time to time. They choose only fresh ingredients to produce some of the towns best Italian Cuisine with a flair.

Using his own fresh semolina pasta creatively prepared gives locals and visitors alike a real treat. This is a favorite quite dining room for anyones relaxing evening, when you just want to enjoy a great meal and a nice glass of wine.

Reservations are suggested. Plan on wishing you had found this sleepy hideaway a long time ago.

Thai Spice
4433 West Flamingo
362-5308
Lunch-Dinner
11-10 pm Monday thru Thursday, Friday and Saturday to 11pm, closed Sunday
All major cards accepted

Do you have a craving for GREAT Thai food? Then you need to know about Thai Spice if you love authentic and spicy Asian foods. It is voted the best Thai restaurant year after year by the locals and visitors alike.

This fine Thai-Chinese restaurant has taken a number of Asian items and made them available with as much heart as you would care for. From 1-10, ten being hottest, you’ll savor the combinations of flavors and heat that complement each other. The menu boasts a number of appetizers like the typical eggroll, won ton, or golden fried shrimp, but their is also pork sate, Thai BBQ chicken, Todd Munn, Mee Krob or Chan Lam.

The soup selection hails won ton, vegetable or seafood soups, but you need to discover a unique combination of complementary tastes like Tom Yum. (Shrimps, lime juice, lemon grass, and exotic spices). Salads offer seafood, shrimp yum, beef yum and grass noodle yum. Entrees include poultry (try the chicken curry — wonderful), pork, beef (try the Prig-Khing pork), seafood or a number or great vegetable selections. Noodle and rice dishes are a great value.

Thai Spice “must visit” for locals and out of towners, and is refreshingly clean and modern both in appearance and presentations. They even cater to weenies that want their “spicy” left in the kitchen. You don’t have to burn anything you don’t want to here.

Chef Les Kincaid has been involved with food, wine, and golf in Las Vegas since 1978, teaching and writing about all three and hosting a nationally syndicated radio program on 21 stations across the US. Presently, he teaches cooking and wine appreciation classes through UNLV continuing education. Shortly you will be able to see and hear the chef on television and a new radio program in Las Vegas.

His latest cookbook “Never Trust A skinny Chef…II” is available at his very extensive and popular web site: http://www.leskincaid.com or email comments to les@leskincaid.com

From time to time, we are asked about Laughlin information. We do have a page of great Laughlin links at http://www.accessvegas.com/laughlin-nevada-nv.htm but our newsletter really is focused on just Las Vegas. However, we do hear regular reports about how cheap the rooms are and how easy comps are to come by. Also, Laughlin is about 10 degrees warmer in the winter. It’s not uncommon for Laughlin to have “pool weather” even in very late fall and early spring.

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

MR. LAS VEGAS – is going to be spending a lot more time in Las Vegas. Wayne Newton has just signed a contract with the Stardust which has him playing 7 shows a week (6 nights a week), 40 weeks a year, for a reported $25 million-a-year. Read the story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-27-Wed-1999/news/12216579.html and Stardust discount rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm (Stardust link).

IMPLOSION TIME – It looks to be a while before our next implosion in Las Vegas, but on Super Bowl Sunday 2000 (Jan. 30) the Mapes Hotel in Reno is going to be imploded. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-28-Thu-1999/business/12237404.html and if you are planning to party in Reno for the Super Bowl and catch the implosion, Reno discount rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/reno-sparks-nevada.htm

THE HAVANA CIGAR BAR – in the Tropicana Hotel celebrates Monday Night Football every week with $1.50 bottled beer, $2.00 well drinks, 15% off all premium cigars, and a “buy one, get one free” of their own “Cuban” hand-rolled cigars which are prepared on the premises.

YOU CAN BET ON IT – Larry Grossman hosts a great, non-biased show about sports betting every day locally on KBAD 920 AM and you can also get it live on the web by going to http://www.larrygrossman.com This show is NOT like those you see on cable TV on the weekends, where “pro handicappers” brag about how they went 89% the last weekend. He purely has some of the best experts in the business give their insights.

BONEHEAD AWARD – goes to me for writing an entire review on the Houdini Lives Again show and failing to note that it plays at the Plaza Hotel downtown. I did include the following info (for those new or curious): The shows plays six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday at 4 PM with an added 8 PM show on Sunday. Tickets are $15.95.

I’m sure it comes as little surprise that I don’t have a journalistic background! I started this newsletter in response the all the glossy tourism magazines which are full of “articles” that are just paid ads. I am trying to tell it like it really is (or at least how I see it). Please — if I leave out something or don’t make sense, do drop me a line at allvegastv@aol.com and let me know. I rely heavily on reader INPUT to help improve the quality of this newsletter.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

This Issue: MADAME TUSSAUD’S WAX MUSEUM

Curious about a restaurant, event, or other Las Vegas attraction that looks fun? Let us review it for you first! Suggestions are always welcome at: allvegastv@aol.com

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:It’s another beautiful day in Las Vegas. We had an overnight low of 60 and are looking at a high of 90. We just got back from the $4.49 all-you-can-eat Feast Buffet at Boulder station, enjoying a full salad bar, made-to-order omelets, a complete array of breakfast foods, and (for those inclined) deserts. Whenever people ask us how we deal with the summer heat, I note that we get “summer” weather twice a year (spring and fall), we don’t shovel snow in the winter.KIDS IN LAS VEGAS – Before you call up U-Haul and toss the kids in the car for a “big move” because Las Vegas sounds like paradise, please consider that while this is a great place for singles and retirees, statistically speaking Las Vegas is no place to raise a child. You can read the cold reality in an article at http://www.lvcitylife.com/pages/Views/stories/99092301v.html Also, the Review-Journal just published a story regarding Nevada students ranking near the bottom at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-01-Fri-1999/news/12061864.html

HOUDINI LIVES AGAIN – starring Dixie Dooley and featuring Houdini style magic kicks off an afternoon run in the showroom at The Plaza hotel downtown with a free publicity stunt that sounds like a must-see. Mr. Dooley will attempt to escape a regulation straitjacket at high noon in front of The Plaza on October 5. He will be suspended 60 feet in the air by his ankles. This event is free.

FREE RIDE – has shuttle and monorail info for Las Vegas — pick-ups, drop-offs, schedules, reliability ratings, en-route times, special considerations, and more. This handy pocket-sized Las Vegas Shuttle Schedule sticks to the important details — where to find the shuttles, when they arrive and depart, and which properties they go to. And it’s all for less than the cost of a single taxi ride. This guide is a must for those who don’t rent a car and you can pick it up at http://www.uponair.com/huntingtonpress/lasvegasadvisor/freeride.htm

FOUNDATION ROOM – at Mandalay Bay is THE place to rub elbows with the movers and shakers of Las Vegas. This members-only club costs $2000 a year to belong and offers quiet, uncompromising top-floor views from Mandalay Bay. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Sep-13-Mon-1999/business/11929702.html

LAS VEGAS BLVD. – you know it as The Strip, and the Review-Journal just did an interesting piece on the portions of the road that stretch miles north and south of the resort district. This interesting read (with photos) is at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Sep-19-Sun-1999/lifestyles/11958243.html

NATIONAL AIRLINES – the Las Vegas based airline just started serving DFW, offering the Dallas – Ft. Worth area their trademark low fares with great service. You can check fares at their site at http://www.nationalairlines.com

NEW YEARS EVE LAS VEGAS ROOMS – are still available! Call Hotel Reservations Network at (800) 666-5268 for a free price quote! NOTE: You MUST stay on the line until you get a person. Thanks for the input. Many people have been in the same situation and share your concern.

Let me tell you where they are probably coming from. You may or may not agree, but these are the cold hard facts (I’m just the messenger — don’t shoot me — I’ll list Bellagio contact info at the bottom):

Bellagio was built for adults. While they were still in construction, they made it a point to note that this would be an adult resort. People with children don’t tend to gamble, and gift shop profits don’t keep the lights on. They are a gaming company. In fact, many of the casinos realize that they made a big mistake earlier this decade in their attempt to cater to families. Theme parks don’t turn a profit. Not like slot machines, anyway. This town has once again decided (for the most part) to leave the family tourism to Orlando. In fact, the advertising slogan for The Tropicana last year was “Rollers, Not Strollers.”

In addition, many of those who pay $200 or more a night to stay at Bellagio specifically do so because Bellagio is generally child free. They are happy to pay for the ambiance of adult surroundings. And Bellagio is happy to have them playing $25 to $100 (or more) a hand at blackjack and craps. These “higher rollers” do receive discount or free rooms.

We understand that in Atlantic City, one must be 21 to enter all gaming areas. So, what Bellagio is doing is not without precedence, but it is a different policy from other Las Vegas hotel casinos.

The above is our take on this situation. We are not associated with Mirage Resorts (their parent company) in any way. We encourage you to write them with your complaint and let us know their answer:

Bellagio Las Vegas
3600 Las Vegas Blvd. South
Las Vegas, NV 89177

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

THE BIG FIGHT – was a bust in the later rounds as De La Hoya backed off, but it was a HUGE weekend here in Las Vegas. Here is a list of stories worth reading:

IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU! – Recently a gambler walked into the Gold Coast with $600 in his pocket and beat them for $400,000 at baccarat over the next 22 hours. No kidding. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Sep-18-Sat-1999/news/11976287.html (middle of article).

MISS NEVADA – Gina Giacinto won the preliminary swimsuit competition at the recent Miss America pageant. Congratulations to Gina on a great showing in the contest! DRINK AND EAT TOO! – It’s tough to pick a nightclub to check out when in town. Not every club is hot every night, but CityLife magazine recently did a quite factual article on “The Drink” and if you attend clubs, it’s worth the read at http://lvcitylife.com/pages/pages/Dining/stories/99090902d.html

NEW YEARS EVE LAS VEGAS ROOMS – are still available! You can check price and availability online with TravelNow at http://www.travelnow.com/index.jsp?cid=2005 Enter the city and date information. NOTE: Most hotels are only taking reservations for Dec. 30 – Jan 2. We suggest you note TravelNow’s prices and then call Hotel Reservations Network at (800) 666-5268 to compare. We will be leaving this notice up as long as rooms continue to be available, but they are starting to go fast.

Our independence allows us to “tell it like it is”, but because we are independent, we don’t have the huge ad budget of the major sites and depend on word of mouth and links to our site.

FEATURE STORY: DO YOU GAMBLE SMART?

If you went to buy something and the cashier said “Guess what, there is an unadvertised instant rebate of $20 on that item,” would you take it? Of course you would! And yet the average gambler easily gives $5, $10, $20 or more every single day with a combination of playing games with poor rules, general poor play, and not taking advantage of the casino freebies.

SLOTS – A few weeks ago we were walking through Binions and noticed a lady that had just hit a top quarter jackpot. Bells went off. She seemed happy. Her husband looked incredulous. Noticing my glance at the action, he turned to me and said “I told her to play full coins in”. This lady had one quarter in and had to settle for a 2000 coin jackpot when that extra quarter would have triggered a 5000 coin jackpot.

Even worse are the people who play progressive slot machines like Megabucks with only one coin in. Every time Megabucks gets way up, it is on the backs of people who hit with only one coin in, collecting $5000 or absolutely nothing (depending on the machine). Can you imagine the sinking feeling of knowing that you would have been set for life?

We can’t say it enough: DON’T PLAY A SLOT MACHINE UNLESS YOU CAN PLAY FULL COINS IN. Period. If you can’t afford it, or your budget is running a little tight, move down a denomination. If you play dollars, move to quarters. If you play quarters, move to nickels. But, you say, “the lower denomination machines are tighter.” Very true, but you lose that gain by playing only one coin. When they advertise 98% payback, they factor in the top jackpot when the machine is played LOADED.

SLOT CLUBS – You’ve seen the cards. People stick them in the slots before they play. You may even have a couple from the casinos you usually play out. Only a couple? No self-respecting slot player should have just a couple! You shouldn’t put a nickel in a machine without one. Anywhere. Even if it’s not your usual casino. Why? Because you never know what will happen.

Our office is close to Sam’s Town and we enjoy grabbing a bite to eat there from time-to-time. Not long after their slot card club started, I went in and decided to play a roll of quarters at video poker before eating. I took the 5 minutes to go out of my way to get a card first, and dutifully stuck it in the machine. Boy, am I glad I did! I got on quite the roll, playing for over a half hour and still cashing out almost $100 ahead. That play was recorded on the card and I was sent free buffet tickets for months after that. We live here, but for you out-of-town, the casinos send things like discount (or free) room offers and the like.

You came to Las Vegas to get lucky. You want to get lucky. You are expecting to get lucky. So, take the 5 minutes to get a card before playing anywhere. If you get lucky, you don’t want to miss out on those possible deep discount or freebie offers. And at the very worse, you get on the mailing lists of all the casinos and will have a nice little stack of coupons or offers to use on your next visit!

We’ll cover the “skill” games like blackjack, craps, and video poker in a future newsletter. In the meantime, Vegas Saver has a great page of Las Vegas money-saving tips at http://www.vegassaver.com and we have a page packed full of information and reference material for just about every game at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-gambling-online.htm

Ellis Island lounge is and has been the #1 Karaoke lounge in town for years. They are not a paid sponsor of ours. We don’t get a dime, not even a free meal for mentioning them, and the coupons we pass out are obtained from our slot club memberships, not directly from the management.

The clientele at Ellis Island is generally middle and upper-middle class. It’s not a megaresort, but their Wednesday night All-You-Can-Eat King Crab Legs is continually ranked as one of the top-10 deals in town by the Las Vegas Advisor (one of the most respected sources in town) and they have some of the better micro-brews in town, which they brew as you watch.

We have used the men’s room there many, many times and seen no evidence of drug use. We feel entirely safe and comfortable on the property regardless of the time of day or night.

Guess what — the cabby turned a $4 fare into a $15 fare. Please keep this in mind: the AVERAGE cabby or casino dealer can’t correctly quote tourism news from yesterday’s paper. They don’t go to shows, eat at the buffets, etc. (although they do get kick-backs for steering people to certain strip clubs). Because they work on the Strip, the spend their free time as far away from it as possible. Their information is often some of the worst rumor in town, and we’re sorry they steered you away from a fun karaoke experience. If they had the best and latest info out there, there would be no need for a newsletter like ours.

>go on sale to the “public” only 30 days before showtime, as you know, the
>system records our order and supposedly purchases tickets on our behalf on
>the day they are offered for sale.á The “processing fee” $US9.90 for each
>set of tickets is charged upfront and is non-refundable…. I’m disappointed
>to discover that this charge is non-refundable, even if tickets cannot be
>acquired !á In any event, if we get tickets that will be great.. the
>processing fee, although higher than other event reservation systems (ie.
>ticketmaster) is not overwhelming.á Other sites offered “guaranteed”
>tickets to the shows we wanted but there was at least an 80% mark-up on each
>ticket !!!!á As it was, this is where we decided to stretch the budget….
>we’ll (2 of us) be paying over $525 Cdn to see these shows if we manage to
>get tickets thru ShowVegas.

ShowVegas at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?cscheme=5&amid=143 is a new partner of ours. They come highly recommended, and can get you tickets which might already be sold out by the time you get here. However, as with any advertising partner, we want your feedback. We just dumped Prodigy Internet from our partner base because we found out that they weren’t getting the introductory CD’s out to those who requested them. If our advertisers can’t deliver, they are history. Your trust is far more valuable to us than an extra dollar from a poor company.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?

NFL BARS – speaking of football, the RJ has just released it’s list of the “home team” bars here in Las Vegas. They list very bar that considers itself a home for the supporters of a particular team and that show every single team game live. Plus, they must have food and drink specials. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Aug-29-Sun-1999/lifestyles/11846612.html

THE RAT PACK IS BACK – By now, you may have seen the controversy surrounding this David Cassidy produced show on many of the national tabloid news shows. It’s been packing them in with it’s solid impersonations and (more importantly) revival of the 60’s Rat Pack vibe 5 nights a week at the Desert Inn. You can read the RJ’s review at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Jul-30-Fri-1999/weekly/11634441.html. Don’t forget to insure your seat ahead of time by booking the show online at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?cscheme=5&amid=143

RACING TRIPLE HEADER – Sept. 24-26 is another big auto racing weekend here in Las Vegas. Friday Sept. 24, the Orleans 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Race takes to the track. Saturday Sept. 25 is the Gold Coast 150 NASCAR Winston West Race, and the weekend tops off with the Vegas.com Pep Boys Indy Racing League (IRL) race. Tickets at (702) 644-4444. These weekends fill up in a hurry, so you may want to jump over to http://www.accessvegas.com now and grab a room and a rental car.

ELLIS ISLAND LABOR DAY PICNIC

See contest section for Ellis Island coupons.

PRICELINE.COM – a local reporter was less than impressed with his experience with this internet ticket service. After the surcharges, he got a flight at a very inconvenient time and actually paid more than he would have purchasing it the regular way. Full story should be of interest to travelers: http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Aug-29-Sun-1999/business/11846738.html

PRIMER ON LIVING IN LAS VEGAS – Is it OK to call it “Vegas”? Who is the mayor of Summerlin? Is it really legal to drink on the street? This interesting and somewhere humorous article answers that and much more: http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Aug-15-Sun-1999/opinion/11746566.html

BUCKLE UP – The California and Nevada Highway Patrols are teaming up to get very strict on drivers along Interstate 15 (the main L.A – Las Vegas route) whom don’t wear seat belts. Of the 38 people killed during 1998 on the stretch of road they are targeting, 30 were NOT wearing seat belts. Please buckle up and save the gambling for when you get here. Full story at http://prodigy-news.excite.com/news/bw/990827/ca-highway-patrol

WINNERS! – Jim Poston of Reno, NV was the winner of the Wet ‘N Wild Coupons. David Dodd-Gilly of Anaheim, CA was our Willy & Jose’s coupon winner. Dane De Voney of Schaumburg, IL won the Sahara Steak House coupon. Our craps winner never returned our notification, so we are now notifying the runner-up in that contest. Next week, we will announce August’s $25 Green Chip winner.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

>Enjoy you newsletter..I do have a couple of questions.
>áá l. I see for two weeks that the winners of the couponsá were from
>California. since I’m from NY we don’t get your letter until after
>midnightá and we are in bed.á Is there anyway we would ever have a
>chance at these?
>ááááááá Thanks for all your good information.

Thanks for your concern. We make every effort to make the chance of winning the coupons and prizes as random as possible. We choose the 10’th entry. Some days, we have 20 entries in a few hours. Sometimes it takes 2 days to hit that 10’th entry mark. Please keep in mind that the number of subscribers who are going to be in Las Vegas during the dates the coupons are valid is both small and variable. So, it is sheer luck to be the 10’th considering all of the above.

By far, more Californians visit Las Vegas than from any other state or country, which probably means that more Californians subscribe to this newsletter. Having said all that, only one of our three winners this past week was from California, and we welcome readers from around the world!
