Gambling Talk: Playing Suited Connectors In Tournaments– with Victor H. Royer. Now it’s time for us to consider how to play perhaps some of the most troubling hands in all of tournament poker. Reader Submitted Photo – Austin and Jo from Brighton in the UK submitted these two great photos. They write:

Hi there!

We are ‘Austin and Jo Constant’ from Brighton in the UK, we were in Vegas last October …… when there was some interesting weather…one day it snowed…and whilst visiting the Canyon we saw a thunderstorm inside the canyon whilst we were stood in full sunshine!!!

Cant wait to come back….we will be back in June to stay at Wynns …. thought we send u a couple of pics as we love your newsletter for all the info on what’s happening in Vegas….keep up the good work, thank you!!

Anyway, we took this amazing photo from our room in the Mirage of Harrah’s across The Strip when this rainbow appeared to disappear into the casino tower…. of course we then rushed over looking for the pot of gold …. but…….

…..and here’s an ‘arty’ one of Caesars Palace taken on a slow shutter speed at night as we drove past. I love this one as you can really feel the movement and I think it captures crazy night time feel of Vegas!

Thanks for your time, all the best from your British readers !!

Jo and Austin

If you have a great photo of Las Vegas to share with our readers (can be artistic or just a really enjoyable photo), send them to us at allvegastv@aol.com. Click to more Photos of Harrah’s Las Vegas and Photos of Caesars Palace.

Hi Ted!I will be in Las Vegas over the 4th of July holiday, and was wondering what really goes on for the 4th? I have heard different things from different people, such as, the strip gets closed off to traffic and each hotel does a fireworks display in sequence, the Stratosphere has the best display, and Red White and Boom is definitely worth checking out.

Can you let me know if any of this is true, and what you suggest to check out on the 4th of July in Vegas?

Lynsie Wiese

Ted Responds:

As always, we talk about and list events as soon as we are given the information. To date we have received no July 4 information.

Stratosphere Tower has traditionally had the only display on The Strip, but with the pending sale of the property I wouldn’t bank on that yet. The biggest displays are spread around town where the rest of us live and we will publish info on those when we get it.

New Years Eve is when the entire Strip is closed to traffic and a unified fireworks display is set off from the tops of various properties. We have streaming video from previous New Years Eve available:

I’d find the person who told you that The Strip closes down for fireworks on July 4 and politely suggest they subscribe to this newsletter… so they will know what they are talking about next time!

With the volume of free information we constantly pump out, we feel our readers are among the most informed about Las Vegas on the planet. Share the wealth and tell your friends to subscribe!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! March Madness and St. Patrick’s Day collide over the weekend in just one week (from publication date). The 10 day forecast is showing temps in the low 80’s (F) for March 16 – 18, 2007. Rooms are going quickly, so don’t delay. Check out our friends at Las Vegas Hotel Deals for the best deals still available!

Spamalot Opens Big – The amazingly successful Monty Python show based on the screenplay of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is opening preview performances as we go to press, with the official show opening at the end of the month. John O’Hurley, (J. Peterman on “Seinfeld.” , “Dancing with the Stars” season one champion, “Family Feud” host) leads the cast which includes Nikki Crawford as The Lady of the Lake. We’ll have reports and reviews as things progress, but tickets are available now: Monty Python’s Spamalot Tickets

Stardust To Go Boom – Local TV station KLAS reported just a couple of days ago that the Stardust implosion will be in the early morning of Tuesday March 13. Earlier, the rumored date had been March 12. (Interestingly enough, KLAS pulled the story off their site, but we have the cached link).

Although historically a big deal and advance notice was made of implosions, the crowd and traffic control would get overwhelming. Now, implosions are usually announced only a few hours in advance. If you are going to be in town this coming week, keep your ear to the ground, maybe catch the evening local news both days, and cross your fingers that you get to see it!

Limos Are Hot and I mean red hot. I was sifting through some of the reservations we’ve taken just today, and you would be surprised at how many are flying on on Southwest or Allegiant or similar discount airline, then kicking off your vacation with a limo ride from the airport to your hotel.

An airline seat is an airline seat, but nothing rocks your vacation from the very first minute like being whisked away in a limo, and the grand entrance you make at the hotel is priceless! The cost? Not much more than a cab. Seriously. Click to check our our limo rates and see for yourself!

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 6 — Luck and Volatility – with Victor H. Royer. The third and final of those points that required a great deal of adjustment for real world poker players making the transition to the Internet tournaments, was the simple fact of the enormously atrocious play that you will find being committed by so many players, and in fact the vast majority of them entering all such tournaments. This is especially so for the small buy-in tournaments, because many are populated by absolute novices and complete amateurs. There is nothing wrong with that, because it is precisely this opportunity that allows many players to begin in this way, and then learn as they go along and progress to a point where they get better. I am getting the impression that Las Vegas is becoming a vacation destination for the rich and famous, and that the average family would not be happy or rather they would be disappointed in a trip there. I thought Vegas was always affordable, but anymore I am thinking Disney is just as cheap. Any comments on the matter would be appreciated.

Thank You

“DRBLUIZE”

Ted Responds:

Attention Readers,

I’m going to let you take over this question! Some people find Las Vegas too expensive, and some still find it reasonable compared to other destinations. Some may enjoy bringing their families here while others feel Las Vegas should be 21 and over.

I’ve posted the original question in our message boards here:
Las Vegas: Family Friendly, or For Rich?

Our message boards are once again operating at full speed, so now is a great time to get in and post your thoughts and answers on what you feel is happening to Las Vegas, and if it is a good family vacation!

Hi,

On a recent TV show- the “Hungry Detective” off the strip restaurants such as Ellis island (behind super 8) were featured. He mentioned a discount coupon book that is available at some locations for the asking. We are traveling on a limited budget & would appreciate any coupons/ tips that you can share. Looking forward to visiting in 3 weeks!!!!

Thanks!

Debbie

Ted Responds:

First I’m going to tell you where to get discount books and stuff, then I’m going to tell you pretty much not to use them, then I’ll tell you about the steak special (which doesn’t need a coupon).

  1. In your room will be one or more free magazines that will have quite a few coupons in it. Also, if you hunt down the “players club booth” in most hotels, they will often have one for the taking.á

  2. By all means use the coupons for things you already were thinking about doing, of that you feel would be very interesting to you. However, don’t get caught in what I call the “coupon trap:”Your time here is very valuable. When you take what you are spending to get here plus the price of a room and food and divide that into the 16 hours a day you won’t be in your room, you are going to find out that you might be spending $10.00 or more per hour just go actually be here.

The Strip is over four miles long, traffic often makes it slow going even if you take the bus (let alone a cab) and you need to think twice about whether it is worth spending valuable time (and money unless you are walking) just getting somewhere to save a few bucks on something that only marginally interest you.

I’ve never talked to anyone who was unhappy that they splurged on something they really wanted to check out here. But I’ve talked to plenty of said “We had a coupon and it was a hassle to get there and it wasn’t that good…”. You get the picture.

    á

  3. Ellis Island has a complete steak dinner for $4.95. It is good. It is off the menu, so you need to ask for it. There is often a 25-45 minute wait at the coffee shop to get in to enjoy it so you have plenty of time to lose money in their casino before you sit down to eat. Still, it is close enough to The Strip to enjoy if you are staying near center strip. Here’s a Google Map to Ellis Island Casino.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Sorry we are running late this week! We had a couple of technical glitches, but our excellent staff (especially Amy) saved the day. Although this issue is dated for last week, the news is 100% up to date as we post it.

Quick follow-up on the cabbie topic we’ve been discussing the past few weeks. You DO have a right to dictate your route to a cab driver, according to a recent article: In It For The Long Haul – Passengers have right to dictate routes to cabbies. Don’t feel bad about telling them to keep you out of the tunnel! (New Readers: Note our August 16, 2006 and August 2, 2006 issues).

While monorail rider numbers plummet and the double-decker “Deuce” buses on The Strip proving very popular, the latest talk is to wipe out the beautiful median running down the middle of The Strip and make it a bus lane: Officials: Monorail, bus can share Strip – ‘Plenty of riders to go around,’ RTC says. I moved here back when the strip median was just raised concrete just like any other major boulevard anywhere else, and the grass and palm trees are much nicer. However… if you come to town and can’t even move up an down The Strip to enjoy it all, we’ve gotta do something.

I want to give a quick shout-out to my friend Lori Judd at A Time For Me Las Vegas. Her company can do everything from running errands to event planning. Whether you are a local who’s car needs that servicing and other time-consuming errands or a visitor looking for help with event planning, corporate functions and more, check them out. They have helped me in a pinch and I am happy to recommend them to others.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Readers WriteHi Ted,I am e-mailing you from Southampton United Kingdom. I subscribe to your excellent Newsletter. My husband and myself have been to Las Vegas 3 times, have stayed in the Stratosphere twice and the Stardust (which we understand is being pulled down). We were there for the opening night of The Venetian, however each time we have been it has been too windy for the fountains at the Bellagio, but have seen them on your video. The last time we were there was 2 years ago, and each time there is something different to see. We have been to see inside the Wedding Chapels which were just across the road from the Stratosphere, and Fremont Street experience was wonderful. We enjoy your newsletter very much, and hope to visit again in the future.Kind regards and keep up the good work on the Newsletter,

Carol and Tony Carter

Blue Man Group at Venetian Las Vegas

Reviewed May 2006
by Nancy Hruska

blue man group venetian las vegas hotels showsWhy are the people in the front row wearing plastic covering over their clothes? Why is there an oversized DNA strand on stage? What are those brass figures in each corner of the showroom? These peculiar embellishments aren’t often found in top of the line Vegas entertainment so curiosity is peaked by even the most sedated audience members.

Far before the world renowned Blue Man Group show’s curtain slides, those waiting for God only knows what, share the same questioning cocked head…what in the world?…what on earth are they going to do with that? And this disorientation, this vacation from the norm, is exactly what the show celebrates: curiosity, experimentation, and the human condition. These three endearing blue men explore the world through witty comical and even thoughtful outbursts that can’t help but capture the hearts of everyone. Click to Read Complete Review

If you want to improve your game or just get a taste of Las Vegas golf, see the videos and learn more about Chris and The Revere at our Streaming Video Free Golf Lessons page. He is also available and highly recommended for private instruction.

X-Scream – thrill ride has opened on top of the Stratosphere Tower. X-Scream tilts you 30 feet over the edge as it plunges you toward the ground almost 1000 feet below! Hint: Buy the “all day pass” if you go up to ride the Stratosphere rides. For about the price of riding any of the rides thee or four times, you can go again and again and again. And if you are like me, you’ll want to!

Sirens of TI – has replaced the old Pirate Show at Treasure Island. OK, ok … we are supposed to call it TI. The show is supposed to be better than the previous one. The “new” TI is supposed to be young and hip like The Palms or Hard Rock. I think the less-than-tepid applause after a recent “Sirens” show said it all.

The new Sirens are great eye candy for the guys (I enjoyed that part), but trying to do a short form production show using props meant for a previous show to an audience too far away to enjoy the subtleties fell a little flat. But hey … the price is right: Free performances nightly at 6:00, 8:00, and 10:00 p.m.

MGM-Mirage is reportedly considering doing away with the Mirage’s south seas theme. What look are they going to go after? Green Valley Ranch? Hey … their executives are making more than I am so they must know something I don’t.

New Year’s Eve Concerts – The list is getting longer and longer, and we are posting them as we get the news. Check out our December 2003 Entertainment Calendar. What … you don’t know how hot New Year’s Eve is here in Las Vegas? We have the insider tips, and plenty of free photos and streaming video from past years on our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve site!

Veterens Eat Free McCormick & Schmick’s is offering all veterans free lunch or dinner (designated menu itens, served with coffee or tea) this Tuesday Nov. 11 in celebration of Veteren’s Day. Veterens ID or discharge papers required. You can reserve ahead at 702-836-9000. McCormick & Schmick’s is a fine dining restaurant. Watch Executive Chef John Botkin prepare one of their famous dishes and take a peek via streaming video: Dial-Up or Broadband

Top Restaurants – Michael Politz, publisher of Food and Beverage Magazine recently appeared on Extra TV, highlighting some of the great restaurants of Las Vegas. Click to watch.

New Mandalay Bay Tower – is already gracing the sky (under construction). Simply called The Hotel, this 43 story tower will feature softer colors and a south seas theme. (Hmmmm … the same theme Mirage is thinking of dumping). A restaurant and lounge on top will be open to the public and feature a stunning Strip view. The hotel will have it’s own check in area and two restaurants (including a 24/7 coffee shop) essentially creating a stand alone hotel.

Video Spotlight – We are always adding new streaming video to our All Vegas TV site, over 100 Las Vegas videos to date! This week, we feature video of the Ambassador Strip Travelodge. Who? What? A Motel 6???

No … no, no, no! Set against the MGM and Tropicana hotels, this inn is a couple minute walk from The Strip, free airport and convention shuttle, complimentary continental breakfast, and even wireless broadband around the pool. Check out a fun, humorous look this property for yourself: Dial-Up or Broadband

á See the Grand Canyon in a Jet Helicopter! For years Maverick Helicopters has been providing a true VIP Helicopter experience of the Grand Canyon. We do things a little different than any other helicopter Company. We give you an adventure of a lifetime and not just another tour of the Grand Canyon. Las Vegas Strip tours plus Helicopter Weddings also available!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! I was one of the privileged guests at a gaming writer’s party put on by Compton-Dancer Consulting this past week. What made it special? This exclusive event was held in the Sky Villa’s of the Las Vegas Hilton. Yes, the same ones you have seen on the Travel Channel.

No, they aren’t as nice as they look on TV. They are 20 times nicer! Mind-bendingly luxurious almost beyond earthly compare. I understand you can stay there is you have close to $20,000 a night, or a few million to gamble.

Great writers with great books that I met and can recommend first hand:

Hello AOL Users! – If you use AOL, you haven’t seen us for a few months (or not at all if you’ve signed up the past few months). In AOL’s quest to block spam, they blocked the vast majority of email newsletters, across the board.

Our biggest complaint the past five months? AOL subscribers saying “I’m not getting your newsletter anymore.” Once we found this out, we applied for accepted status. They were great about getting it taken care of, and we are thrilled to see so many new and old friends again.

What is a Scinta? – Only one of the longer running acts in town now! And with good reason: This family act is a must-see. In fact, see a streaming preview for yourself: Dial-Up or Broadband

New Year’s Eve – From last week, many asked about what various organized events happen for New Year’s Eve. We’ll start receiving that info soon, and let you know. The “big” party is actually in the middle of The Strip, totally closed to traffic as a four mile long fireworks display goes off! We have the scoop at Las Vegas New Year’s Eve. Vegas Nights Helicopter Flight

Maverick Helicopter Vegas Strip – I recently took the opportunity to ride with Maverick Helicopters for one of their stunning night tours over The Las Vegas Strip. On board were a small group of great people from all over, two of whom were celebrating their second anniversary!

Don’t wait for a special occasion to try this out. Even though I live here, and am pretty jaded to the brightly lit strip, my jaw drops on this ride.

This isn’t like being on top of the Stratosphere, or craning your neck toward the airplane window as you fly in. The wrap-around windows of the helicopter give every rider a spectacular, unparalleled view of our beautiful Las Vegas Strip.

The ride takes you all the way: From the very bottom of The Strip (south of Mandalay Bay), past the Stratosphere, to the Fremont St. Experience experience downtown and over the light show and hotels of “Old Vegas.” You fly about 1000 feet off the ground, high enough to see everything smoothly move before your eyes but close enough to enjoy the details.

As you move past all of the brightly lit hotels and the beauty of their entire properties, the odds are you’ll catch the Mirage Volcano, Bellagio Fountains and maybe even the Fremont St. Light Show … from overhead!

Worried about heights? This isn’t a thrill ride, nor designed to be one. Maverick has a perfect safety record, the best helicopters, and most experienced (but informative and fun) pilots. Leather seats, heat and air, elbow room, and a wrap around vista make this a highlight of your trip.

Beware; some companies sell discounted Strip helicopter tours and they basically take you up in a small circle and you are done before it started. You get what you pay for, and Maverick gives you your money’s worth. Whether a first time visitor, your “once in a lifetime” Vegas trip, or you drive in every month, this should be a “must do” on your next trip.

Reserve early. This popular sightseeing flight can fill up well in advance.

THIS ISSUE: Summer Beat The Heat Issue

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Scenic Southwest Tours – by plane, bus, or even helicopter! You’ve seen the glossy ads in the tourist brochures. You’ve thought about it. You come all the way to Las Vegas — why not see one of the some of the most famous landmarks in the world! Don’t by tricked by web sites & magazines that offer discount tours. Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It’s been a little warm, but I’m going to say it: It is a dry heat. The past couple of weeks many U.S. cities have been sweltering under 95 degree temperatures with devistating humidity. I’ll take our 105 and bone dry anytime. Here’s a tip for you: Some of the lowest rates of the year here are in the summer. If you have to be hot, might as well be here on vacation by the pool!

For those who enjoy more moderate temperatures, now is the time to extend your summer this fall. Our average October high is 84 and this brings flocks of visitors from areas the weather has already chilled. That and betting on college football games! The key to locking in great fall rates here is to book NOW. The longer you wait, the higher the rates are going to climb. Check our rates at Rates

FLAMINGO FIESTA – Enjoy great food, beer and other beverages from Mexico in The Flamingo’s restaurants and bars and recieve a free scratch card to win instant prizes including beverages, merchandise or vacations to Mexico. Every card is a winner and the Flamingo Room, Lindy’s (coffee shop) and the buffet have special Mexican menus.

HAWAIIAN TROPIC – Western Regional Pageant semi-finals are being held every Saturday night poolside at Bally’s through Aug. 31. Tickets are $25 and includes two drinks ($15 with no drinks).

WIN SINATRA JR. TICKETS – If you have yet to enter, you have only a few hours left to enter to win Frank Sinatra Jr. tickets for his upcoming engagement at the MGM. He is singing his father’s songs with full 36-piece orchestra. Enter or learn more about this show at Sinatra Jr.

TAXI DRIVERS – finally got busted. I’ve been ranting here forever about how they are screwing you guys over with long rides (without your consent to the alternate routing). The Taxi Authority did undercover work and found that 60-80% of the rides from the airport to The Strip went south through the airport tunnel instead of north toward The Strip. This has been costing riders 35-60% more. A full story from the local paper is available at Taxi Driversl We continue to suggest renting a car, which costs about the price of a couple cab rides a day. Especially at this rate!

SPLASH SUMMER SPECIAL – See Splash at the Riviera through August 31, 2002 and eat at the buffet for free! Splash is the topless show with the most variety of entertainment: with gorgeous showgirls in glamorous costumes, world-class ice skaters, motorcycle daredevils, and the hottest specialty acts on the strip. Book now at Splash

HILTON BUFFET – changed it’s look a while back, but kept the quality. We stopped in for Sunday Brunch and really enjoyed it. $12.99 for champaign bruch featuring all of your breakfast favorites, ommelettes cooked to order, a full salad bar including cheeses, plenty of fresh fruit, peeled shrimp, lox, a nice variety of Asian delights and a full desert area. Well worth the money and then some, and the new decor is more modern and very comfortably upscale.

9/11 – I’ll be flying on 9/11 this year. I had a trip that was bringng me back September 10 and jumped at the chance to extend it a day. Crazy? No. Crazy is those who haven’t flown because of months old airport horror stories. If you are just plain scared to fly, I respect that people have various fears. If not, get on a plane. I’m spending far less time clearning security than before Sept. 11 of last year as are most travelers I talk to.

RESTAURANTS – Our Food Guide Chef John Guinivere continues to make the rounds and report on great Las Vegas dining opportunities. Recently reviews are Andre’s French Restaurant (one of the top restaurants in town, period) and Mr. Lucky’s at the Hard Rock. Those and more at Restaurants

ROCKIN’ UNDER THE STARS – Caesars Palace presents a weekend of music, dancing and celebration. This two-night All-Star Concert Series event will feature Dennis Quaid & The Sharks Saturday, Aug. 31, and Jim Belushi & The Sacred Hearts Sunday, Sept. 1, with opening act Vesica Pisces both nights. Reserved-seat tickets are priced at $25 (plus handling) and can be purchased by calling (702) 731-7333

POOL PARTY – The Plaza (downtown) has a free pool party on the sports deck of the Hotel on Thursday nights. The Party is for Adults only 21 or older and features wet T-shirt contests, water balloon tosses, limbo and hula hoop contests. There is a disc jockey, dancing as well as specially priced food and drink.

CREOLE HEAT – New show features a slice of life in New Orleans, Broadway-style served cajun hot featuring laughter, song, drama and delight! Get swept away in this alternative and refreshing production! 7:30 pm nightly except Wednesday in the Big Easy Showroom at the Bourbon Street Hotel & Casino. $29.95 plus tax & gratuity includes 2 free drinks. Dinner packages available. Creole Heat for tickets and info.

TEQULA JOE’S – Imperial Palace now has a nightclub. Tequila JoeÆs features a fabulous Daiquiri Bar, great food and a nightly dance scene that is far from the ordinary. The Center Strip location features state-of-the-art sound system, spinning the best of Top 40, house and hip hop, live DJÆs Friday and Saturday nights. It sounds like they are trying to give Harrah’s Carnival Court a run for their money and we’ll be down to check it out soon.

CHICK SINGER NIGHT – Female musicians looking for a venue to showcase their talent now have the perfect place at the Palms Casino Resort with Chick Singer Night (CSN). The Las Vegas debut of CSN takes place Monday, Aug. 5 at 8 p.m. in the Palapa Lounge. CSN will be held the first Monday of each month for the next three months at the Palms. CSN is open to the public and is free of charge. Singers of all levels of experience, from the aspiring beginner to the seasoned professional, are invited to sing any style of music.

MAGIC ALL-STARS – has opened at the Frontier. It appears they are taking a “comedy club” approach to magic. Host Paull Casas will feature a variety rotating magic acts, both known and unknown. The show plays every Friday at 2 PM. The price is right: $14.95 which includes two drinks. Suitible for all ages, children under five are admitted free.

LINK AND WIN – How do free show tickets sound? Maybe a stunning night helicopter flight over The Strip! How would you like to be automatically entered every quarter (4 times a year) into our drawing for these great prizes? If you have a website or homepage you can enter to win these are more just by linking to us! Full details at Link and Win

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

SHOW REVIEW:

Instead of a show review this issue, I thought I’d give you some ideas for great things to see this summer and early fall in Las Vegas. Both things to stay indoors and “beat the heat” as well as interesting outdoor activites and when to do them.

Stratosphere Tower — The tower has both indoor and outdoor viewing areas so this is a great thing to see no matter what time of day. However, we suggest getting there about an hour before sunset and enjoy watching the entire Strip light up from the lounge. You can enjoy a cool drink in climate controlled area with a million dollar view. Then after the sun dips, head out to the outdoor observation deck and experience the open-air view. To determine sunset for the days you will be here, click to http://www.weather.com/weather/climatology/daily/89121?climoMonth=8

Bellagio Fountains and Fontana Lounge – The Fountains of Bellagio go off every 30 minutes from noon until dusk and then every 15 minutes until midnight. The water creates a cooling effect for those watching it. You can view it from the street or from the Fontana Lounge in evening. The Fontana is one of the nicest lounges in the city, with an outdoor area overlooking the lake and fountains.

Helicopter Flights – You probably have extra cash in your pocket because your room rate is so reasonable during the summer. Use that money to jump on one of Maverick Helicopter’s air conditioned jet helicopters for a beautiful flight over and into the Grand Canyon. If you choose a flight with a stop at the bottom of the Canyon, you will find it not only stunning on the eyes, but comfortably cool as well. Click to http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/las-vegas-grand-canyon-tours.htm

Go Shopping – Las Vegas has some of the most incredible shopping malls in the world with various free shows and events on a regular basis. Caesars Forum Shops have various shows occuring every hour. Desert Passage at Aladdin has Arabian music, belly dancing, and more. The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian is a taste of Venice with strolling performers and a canal down the middle of the entire mall. These malls have all been built with a nice “outdoor” feel to them and if shopping is not your thing, sit at one of the cafes or restaurants and just enjoy people watching.

Treasure Island Pirate Show – plays at 5:30 PM., 7:00 PM., 8:30 PM., 10:00 PM. and 11:30 PM. The show is free right out in front of Treasure Island. You’ll want to get a good viewing spot at least 30 minutes before the show starts, so plan to see one of the last two shows so you aren’t standing in the blazing sun. Because of the lights and pyrotechnics, the show is much more spectacular after dark.

MGM Lion Habitat — is free and indoors. Open starting at 11 AM, this is a great “beat the heat” activity and a chance to view live lions up close.

We have additional information on fun Las Vegas activities (many indoors) at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/las-vegas-attractions.htm

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Running a little late this time. I was out of town for a week at my sister’s wedding, and I thought it would be a good idea to get caught up on the stack of newspapers and press releases so I could pass everything along.

The long 4’th of July weekend is just about here, and there is still time to reserve your room and head to Las Vegas. Check at http://www.accessvegas.com and grab rooms while they are still available. This year both the Stratosphere Tower and The Venetian are featuring fireworks (approx. 9 PM for both).

Our deepest sympathy to the fans, friends, and family of Who bassist John Entwistle who passed away Friday June 28 here in Las Vegas, just one day before the start of their highly anticipated concert tour.

$1.83 BILLION – is the new price tag for Steve Wynn’s Le Reve (former Desert Inn site). Other reports place the cost closer to $2.5 billion. The billion dollar construction credit line is believed to be the biggest construction loan ever issued in the United States. How upscale is this property going to be? They are looking at having Ferrari and Maserati dealerships right on site. Completion is expected in 2005. We’ll tell you more as they actually get moving along. This is looking to be huge.

STRIKE LOOMING – Looks like we are going to have a hotel strike at a few selected properties that have not come to terms with the union. Word is that replacement workers are ready to go to minimize disruption. The strike is set for a few hours following our publication here, but we’ll keep a hotel list and details updated at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotel-strike.htm

CIRQUE DU TOO MANY? – Two more Cirque du Soleil shows are coming to the Las Vegas Strip. New York, New York will open one in 2003 and MGM in 2004. Details are scarce except that the New York, New York show will be sensual and erotic. Cirque du Soleil has been kicking around the idea of an adult (topless) show for some time. This just might be it. Add to that Celine Dion’s show (which is supposed to be Cirque style) and another Cirque style show at Le Reve and we’ll see if overkill is possible, even in Las Vegas.

$20 DISCOUNT – We have a special arrangement with Maverick Helicopters to offer $20 off on their spectacular Grand Canyon helicopter flights online. Maverick flies farther and deeper into the Canyon with some of the newest equipment and the best safety record. They are the company the concierges at many of the top Las Vegas resorts call when their guests request a Grand Canyon tour. By booking online through us, we can offer you $20 off these stunning tours. Tour info, photos, and booking details available at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/las-vegas-grand-canyon-tours.htm

NICK’S – Our restaurant guide Chef John Guinivere just reviewed Nick’s On The Strip, a pleasant alternative to a hotel coffee shop for diverse 24 hour dining and a great night view. You can find it and other reviews at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-restaurants.htm

FREE BINGO, CHEAP BOWLING – The Westward Ho is having free bingo at 4 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays. Everyone is welcome for the eight games played at each session. $50 prize each game. The Gold Coast (next to Rio and Palms) has $1 bowling and $1 drinks Midnight to 4 AM, Mondays through Fridays.

TAXI SCAM – The cab drivers are at it again. If you are on your way down The Strip, they’ll tell you that the Bellagio Fountain show is about to start and will pull into the right lane of traffic sitting there with about 20 other cabs until the show starts while the meter is running (racking up both a higher fare and hoping you tip them extra for the “favor”).

Granted, the fountain show runs every 15 minutes after dark so it is never more than a 10 minute wait, but the view from a cab is lousy. You are behind trees and other people lining the sidewalk. Since the fountain shows do play every 15 minutes from dusk to midnight, and since they are well worth seeing, plan on seeing them up close from the sidewalk sometime during your visit.

SPIRIT AIRLINES – is starting to serve Las Vegas. This on the heels of Jet Blue announcing that they are entering our market October 10. This opens up new service from New York (Jet Blue) and Detroit (Spirit) as well as flights from multiple cities in Florida (heavily served by both airlines).

FABERGE: TREASURES FROM THE KREMLIN – opens at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art in September running through January 26, 2003. The exhibit will feature more than 100 of the world’s finest Faberge masterworks. Tickets are $15 ($12 for students and NV residents).

SUBSCRIPTION “DUES” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows, and tours through http://www.accessvegas.com or the links in this newsletter. SHOW REVIEW:

Bravo Starring Charo – The “Cuchi-Cuchi” girl has returned to Las Vegas. Charo made her Las Vegas debut at the Sahara in the mid-70’s, playing here often as well as making 45 appearances on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, guest star spots on shows like The Love Boat, and recording albums. After taking the better part of two decades off to raise her son in Hawaii, she is making a strong comeback in Las Vegas.

Bravo is an international variety show with contemporary Latin music, flamenco, salsa and samba dancing. While centered on Charo’s multitude of talents (she can do much more than jiggle), she doesn’t try to carry the show. Bravo contains a full cast of musicians, dancers, and specialty acts to create an enjoyable, well rounded show.

After the opening song and dance set, ventriloquist Sammy King and his wisecracking Mexican parrot Francisco do a very funny comedy bit. Sammy King has been performing since 1958 all over the world as well as a mainstay performer of Las Vegas shows. His act is seasoned by his years of performing, but hasn’t lost lost the edge. He is hilarious.

After the dance number “Freedom,” the aerial adage team of Cees and Cathy take center stage. For those not familiar with this art form, it combines dance, strength, and gymnastics performed while suspended high in the air. The male generally wraps his arms around leather straps and floats through the air while supporting, twirling, and twisting with the female in an artful way.

Later in the show, Charo took the stage to perform four classical guitar pieces. While known best for her “cuchi-cuchi,” few know that she trained and performed with classical guitar master Segovia in her birth country of Spain and continues to be a master of the instrument. This segment was long enough to be enjoyable without being an exercise in ego.

Bravo is more likely to appeal to those who know/remember who Charo is or who enjoy the very popular Latin music and dance (which the show has plenty of). The Sahara showroom is moderately intimate and very comfortable, providing the perfect venue for most aspects of this production.

Charo was recently inducted into the Casino Legends Hall of Fame and video highlights of the induction are available at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/news Video highlights of Bravo Staring Charo are available at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/shows

THIS ISSUE: Guinness World of Records Museum

EDITOR’S NOTES: I’m making a slight format change. Instead of providing a short summery of each story then linking to the full text, I’ll make a few comments on the more interesting happenings of the past week then have headlines with links to full stories.

I spoke with Vanna Lace (Penthouse, Miss Nude World) last weekend about her upcoming role in Skintight at Harrah’s. She will be replacing former Playboy Playmate Cynthia Brimhall and tells me the show is being revamped for her role.

Our video tests continue to go well. I found three short Las Vegas tourism commercials from a few years ago which I put back-to-back at http://tv.accessvegas.com/commercials just for fun. Word of warning: these will give you that “Vegas Vibe” and you’ll be booking your next trip here after watching them!

Finally, my apologies to the new Nectar restaurant at Bellagio for last week’s typo, where a typo noted the Dungeness Crab as “Dungeness Crap.” A number of you caught that error — at least you had a good laugh! If you try Nectar, please post your comments of the dining area of our message board at http://boards.accessvegas.com

FEATURE STORY: Guinness World of Records Museum

You have to go out of your way to find the Las Vegas version of this world famous Museum. And unlike the Liberace Museum or others that have loads of authentic items, this museum leans more on displays, facts, and videos. However, if you (or your kids) are curious about the world we live in, this is a reasonably fun and inexpensive stop on your Vegas itinerary.

You enter to a replica of the world’s tallest man, and move on to the world’s heaviest as well as the shortest twins. Then to food and drink: the largest shot glass collection in the world (seems appropriate for Vegas), replicas of the biggest fruits and vegetables in the world in a giant fruit basket, and information on a variety of food eating records. Although in a different area, that might tie in with the world’s largest “air sickness bags” gathered from airlines all over the world!

Other sections of the museum include graphical or interactive displays for tallest structures, highest mountains, entertainment and music, and space achievements. Of special interest were displays with videos of the world’s largest domino fall records that were fascinating to watch as well as a video of the worlds longest rope slide (two guys strung a rope almost a mile up a mountain and slid all the way down together on a pulley).

A special Las Vegas section notes the records set by the Luxor Beam (strongest light — can be seen from space), Stratosphere Tower (highest thrill rides), Fremont St. Experience light show, Hoover Dam, and others.

For sports buffs, they have an interactive sports record database where you can look up just about any record every set in any sport. This is part of a good-sized sports record display.

Las Vegas Guinness World of Records is located at 2780 Las Vegas Blvd. South (The Strip — halfway between Circus Circus and The Sahara across from Wet N’ Wild). Open daily, admission is $6.00 for adults, $5 for students, seniors, and military, and $4 for children under 12.

Ellis Island is on Koval behind Bally’s. Not only do they have great food specials (the ($4.95 steak is an “off menu special” last I checked — ask for it) and microbrews, but they are famous for the nightly Karaoke.

The name change to Adventuredome was just a marketing decision. I’ve lived here almost a decade and have not heard of serious injury at the park. You didn’t include anymore details or outcome. Both the park and the tram are operating normally and you can read our review of Adventuredome (with photos) at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/circus-circus-adventuredome.htm

Much of the charge is based on the carrier the hotel uses, and you will find yourself getting zapped the same way if you make a collect call from a pay phone (hence, the success of those TV ads encouraging you to save money using their service for collect calls). We strongly suggest buying a phone card before your trip like the one we advertise at http://www.accessvegas.com/cogni-talk.htm and use it at pay phones.

Despite the recent helicopter accident, we suggest air (plane or helicopter) trips to the Grand Canyon. It is hours from Las Vegas by bus. You spend far more time on the bus than seeing the Canyon. We are going to be taking a ‘copter trip this fall and will have first hand reports and info then. I just haven’t had the time to take the tours yet! Red Rock Canyon is about 30 minutes from The Strip — worth the car rental for the day as it is well worth seeing. Info at http://www.redrock.org

Fremont Street Experience is a very safe provided you stay within a block or two of the canopy light show area.
