Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! We ran into Magician Steve Wyrick shooting new scenes for his magic show outside The Aladdin on Tuesday night. (Hint: It involves a yellow Hummer). If you were on The Strip and saw what looked like a movie shoot in front of The Aladdin, that was it. After years at The Sahara (where location hurt his visibility), he’s having a great run at The Aladdin.

Monorail Is Running! – The monorail’s first day in service has been greeted by stormy skies and rain, but it isn’t dampening the enthusiasm. Las Vegas has often been called “Disneyland for adults” and now we finally have our own monorail as well!

Finally, you can get up and down The Strip without sitting in traffic while the taxi meter climbs unmercifully. We’ll have a full report with photos and streaming video very soon. In the meantime, here are some links to all the info you need:

Hot Vegas Book – We strongly suggest picking up Vegas Confidential: Norm! Sin City’s Ace Insider 1,000 N@ked Truths, Hot Spots & Cool Stuff (Amazon link). Written by Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Norm! Clarke, this is the true insider’s guide.

Norm has been covering Las Vegas for a number of years, has all the inside scoops, funny stories, and is hands on in his coverage of Las Vegas. We know because we often see him at all the events we cover! He’s also an all-around great guy and Las Vegas is lucky to have him.

See the Grand Canyon in a Jet Helicopter! For years Maverick Helicopters has been providing a true VIP Helicopter experience of the Grand Canyon. We do things a little different than any other helicopter Company. We give you an adventure of a lifetime and not just another tour of the Grand Canyon. Las Vegas Strip tours plus Helicopter Weddings also available!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! The weather is great, The Strip is lively, and Las Vegas is on pace for a record number of visitors this year! Memorial Day is just around the corner, and this is the hottest, craziest, most action packed time of the year short of New Year’s Eve.

Because we are hooked up with a nationwide discount rates hotel provider (low rates at hotels you know and trust), don’t sit home this coming holiday weekend. Whether visiting us in Las Vegas, visiting the beach, mountains, lake or the relatives, click here for hot low Memorial Day Weekend hotel rates.

New Look – Those with sharp eyes will notice a new look to the top of this newsletter and our main page at AccessVegas.com. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be revamping and improving all areas of our site with this new look, more features, and easier navigation so you can find what you want!

Access Vegas Minute – You can hear the audio companion to this newsletter at Access Vegas Minute.

Lance Burton – (pictured at right levitating Pamela Anderson during a recent Tonight Show appearance) will be co-presenting on the American Country Music Awards for the 2nd year in a row. He will, of course do a little magic with the envelope.

Josh Turner is his co-presenter for Record of the Year. The 39th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, “Country’s Night To Shine” Telecast to Air Live From Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas Wednesday, May 26th At 8:00 PM ET/PT on the CBS Television Network. Free Golf Magazine – to our readers. This is not a misprint, but it is limited time offer for our subscribers. Click for your complimentary GOLF Magazine subscription! Itching to golf on your next visit to Las Vegas? Check out our Las Vegas golf section.

David Copperfield’s – “An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion” returns to the MGM Grand June 3-16 and again July 8-21. This show gets our highest personal recommendation and the opportunity to see Copperfield in the MGM Grand’s intimate 740-seat Hollywood Theatre (as opposed to some of the bigger venues he plays around the world) shouldn’t be passed up. Click to read our review. Tickets are available at (toll free) 800-696-5721 or click to book David Copperfield online.

New VIP Section – Las Vegas has amazing shows, events and concerts but getting tickets for the likes of Celine Dion, Danny Gans or “O” by Cirque Du Soleil can be tough. Same for nailing great seats to the mega-star concert tours that rage through Las Vegas!

We’ve got the solution: Premium seats to Las Vegas events. Yes, you’ll pay a little more but this is a special trip. Why not see that special event up close, or get tickets to a sold out event. Make this Vegas vacation the most fun and special for you or that special person in your life. Not coming to Vegas? We also have tickets for all sports events (including sold out playoff games) and major concerts in other cities. Click to see all available events!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! The national news has been chasing Michael Jackson all over town. Never a dull moment here.

Got a couple of great feedback emails this week:

Myron Shulman had me laughing with this one (regarding Treasure Island now calling itself TI): I also heard rumors that MGM/Mirage plans to re-do the Mirage motif. All references to the south seas, as well as tigers, will be removed. What will they do with the tigers? They will need to come-up with a new name, too. They probably will call it “MI” as it’s next to “TI”. They can call the area “Mi-Ti“.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas. Usually I end that phrase with an exclamation point, but the serious injury of Siegfried and Roy’s Roy Horn has cast a dark cloud over Las Vegas this week.

I delayed this issue because so much uncertainly and conjecture surrounded this incident, Roy’s health, the future of the show, and more. The basics have been broadcast worldwide, but many questions have continued to pour in.

Instead of trying to relay this information, I have provided links to both print and video stories straight from local news sources so you can get the very best and latest information on this tragedy.

Other Tiger ShowsThe Illusionary Magic of Rick Thomas just celebrated six years at The Tropicana. We were pleased to be guests at this event, and treated to the latest version of this outstanding show which also features tigers. That review was to run this week, but we felt it would be tainted by the current events. We will publish it soon.

Dirk Arthur also uses the big cats in his act. We enjoyed his show a few months ago, and he has moved from the Silverton to The Plaza hotel downtown. Both are great shows and we encourage you to check one or more out in lieu of Siegfried and Roy.

Featured Stories:
Tabu Ultra Lounge, Shady Grove Lounge

Here’s a couple of brief stories on two relatively new local lounges. Tabu at MGM absolutely appeals to the upscale tourist crowd. Shady Grove at Silverton is a retro, fun, comfortable lounge aimed at the local’s crowd but worth checking out for tourists as well.

Tabu Ultra Lounge – What is an “ultra lounge?” This is something out of a James Bond movie … 10 years from now! This upscale lounge doesn’t have a bar band in it. We are talking about a classic comfortable feel with couches and tables combined with some incredible modern touches.

DJ’s spin modern dance music, but at a volume you can talk over. If you want to dance, go “next door” to Studio 54. A cool feature is the bar and tables. They look granite. No, they look tile. No … now there is a picture of a nude woman moving along the bar. Images are projected on these surfaces that seem real as life, but evolve before your eyes.

Nobody’s out front handing out coupons for this place. It is one of those “if you have to ask when it opens, when it closes, or how much anything costs … go elsewhere” establishments. For the record, it opens around 10 PM and goes all night long. Table service requires bottle purchase (and often reservations). Cover is $15 for men and free for ladies. While they claim dress is “casual” (saw a guy in a golf shirt and shorts), when you are spending for this kind of atmosphere, dress up.

Tabu Ultra Lounge is located inside the MGM Grand.

Shady Grove Lounge – “Gas, Food, and Lounging” is the motto of this new lounge at The Silverton. Just a few minutes south of The Strip, The Silverton Hotel Casino is undergoing a major renovation and upgrade. The former cowboy theme catering to the snowbird crowd is being changed to more of a retro, Route 66 Southwestern adventure feel.

When I moved here over ten years ago, the Silverton was called Boomtown and it was just off the freeway in the middle of nowhere. The growth of the valley now has the location surrounded by mid-level and upscale housing and the Silverton is making a strong grab at south Vegas Valley residents.

From the looks of it, they are succeeding nicely. Shady Grove is a combination upscale sports bar and lounge set in a faux hunting lodge setting with dark wood and stone features. While open to the casino, the area envelopes you and makes you feel like you’ve walked into another dimension.

Miniature bowling is housed in a vintage full-length Air Stream trailer complete with an Elvis bumper sticker on the back. The bar has the prerequisite huge flat screen TV’s not only over the bar but near the solo pool table, assuring that you’ll catch almost every play of every game simultaneously.

However, lounging areas away from the bars and TV’s let you sit down relax with a drink and friends. The female bar and cocktail staff sport sexy, skin and cleavage baring brown leather outfits and go out of their way to be fun, flirty, and friendly.

While strongly after the local’s crowd, tourists will enjoy the new sexy, retro, fun Shady Grove Lounge. Lounge is open 24/7 although food, cocktail waitress service, and miniature bowling may not be available at all hours inside the lounge. Happy hour specials are from 4-8 PM, Tuesday – Saturday.

Shady Grove Lounge is located in the Silverton Hotel Casino.

Recently, my spouse and I have experienced the excitement of penny slots. It just seems like it is more fun to win 7500 credits on a penny machine than to win 300 credits on a quarter machine even though you’re winning the same amount in either case. We’re planning a trip to Vegas in the near future and plan to do a lot of casino-hopping. Can anyone tell us where to find penny slots? Who has the most? Where you’ve had the best luck?

Penny slots are getting very popular, especially now with the “ticket in, ticket out” technology so you don’t have to scoop up your winnings in pennies. We know many of you enjoy them when you hit town! Which machines are your favorites? Do you play a few coins at a time, or do you play the machine loaded?á Tell us about it in our Penny Slots forum.

Meg from Northern California wrote:

I have enjoyed reading your news letter for over a year now. I travel to Vegas once or twice a year and and your newsletter has been a big help in “seeing the town.” I recently had a very unpleasant experience with a cab driver who went the long way to my hotel. I guess he thought I was a rookie to Vegas. When I asked him why we was taking me on this route, he told me the other road was under construction. WRONG! I was pretty upset and told him he ate up his tip. What I didn’t do was get his name and the taxi company’s name. I will never make that mistake again.

On my return to the airport, I had a great cabbie and told him what happened on my arrival. No, the road wasn’t under construction and yes, I did get taken. Unfortunately, I read about taxi rip offs in your newsletter AFTER I returned. At least I’ll be aware in the future. Thanks for covering that subject. At least I’m not the only one who got suckered.

We bring this up from time-to-time because cab drivers are notorious for “long hauling” riders. All the while, they pretend to be friendly and helpful, trying to sell you tickets to a Strip Club or other show that they are getting a healthy kick-back for.

I’m not saying that all cab drivers are bad, but it doesn’t hurt to beware. If they take you through the airport tunnel (without informing or asking you), they are taking you the long way. The Strip is north of the airport. The tunnel heads south!

We have a complete page on Getting Around In Las Vegas that includes information on cabs and other forms of transportation. If you feel you were “long hauled” or experience any other problem with a cab driver, just quietly note the cab company and car number and (if you can) their name on the drivers certificate posted in the cab. Do not call the cab company. Like they care!

Call the Taxicab Authority at (702) 486-6532. They do keep records, and can suspend drivers with repeated complaints. Don’t feel bad! Your call alone won’t cause a driver hardship. Message Board Member “Scott ” wrote a great trip report about his December visit. Talked about his flight, cab ride, gambling, drinking and just having a good time at Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Rio Suites, Luxor, Bellagio, Caesars, and more. This is a great read whether you are getting ready for your next trip, or missing the Las Vegas experience.

Check out his Dec. 14-16 Trip Report. And don’t forget to contribute your own trip report or thoughts on your trip when you return. It is a great way to relive the fun and excitement as well as helping others plan for their trip!

I have been travelling to Vegas for years, and have enjoyed fishing the parks near the Strip stocked with trout. This year though I have the time to extend further out, maybe to Lake Mead or the Colorado river. Any advice, or links to finding fishing info would be greatly appreciated (trip is late February!)

Unfortunately, our backlog prevented us from asking before Laree came to town, but if you fish this area, step up to the plate and help your fellow anglers out with some basic (or advanced) info about fishing in Las Vegas in our Any Fishermen In Vegas forum.

Which club (green Door, Red Rooster, Hid-n-seek, Fantasy Social club) is better for a couple? Which is cleaner, more respectable? Which has a better ratio of couples versus single men? Any help would be great.

This is a good time to emphasize that our forums let you pick a “screen name” so you can be anonymous. If someone emails you from your forum profile, it goes through our machine. Your actual email is never revealed to someone unless you write them back and tell them.

We do not have any association with these clubs, but if you have advice for “bill67” feel free to respond to his post in the Adult Swing Clubs forum. Please post and/or contact someone through their profile. Our forums are great for sharing info, but we will draw the line at personal ads.

I saw Thunder From Down Under last October and they were fabulous!! It’s a very interactive show – so the shy ladies should sit way in the back!!!! The show is funny, sexy and exciting. Some of the best looking men I’ve seen in a long time!! Saw the Chippendales many years ago…I much prefer Thunder. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Also, plenty of opportunity to meet the men…

In my 10 years here, the biggest (and possibly best) change I have seen is more women enjoying Las Vegas! It used to be rare to see groups of women out and about, having fun, cutting loose, maybe having a couple too many cocktails but the tide has turned. “Girls Night Out” vacation now means Las Vegas!

Two popular shows are Thunder From Down Under and Chippendales The Show. If you have seen either one, or want to know what others are saying, check out our For The Ladies (Male Revues) forum.

My wife and I are yearly Las Vegas regulars and both in our early thirties. Can someone out there recommend a dance club where we won’t feel out of place and “old”.

Thirty-something includes me (Ted) and I imagine a fair number of our readers. We know you come here to do more than gamble so tell us your favorite nightlife in our The Thirty-Something Crowd forum. I posted a couple of my favorites and someone else has already chimed in. Where do you love to dance and lounge?

Safety – I am on the Las Vegas Strip 2-3 times a week. There are subtle signs of more security and police presence, and the hotels have noted much more security activity not visible to guest to provide optimum safety. I don’t even give it a second thought.

Besides, why would anyone do anything to Las Vegas? We are the center of … just about nothing. No major media. No important financial centers. Not a huge population center. Many would figure that “evil Sin City” got what it had coming and wouldn’t care! And terrorism is about making people care.

Featured Story: Foreign Travel? Who Needs It When You Have Vegas, Baby!

Tired of war news and growing anti-US ranting overseas? Want to avoid outrageous prices, terrorism, 12-hour flights, customs hassles and interminable international airport security delays?Try Las Vegas as an all-inclusive alternative to taking your hard-earned US bucks through unfriendly skies to hostile foreign destinations. But if you still want a taste of world travel without leaving the good, old USA, you can do it all in just one city.

Paris – Do you need the original’s lousy attitudes, poor service, bad sanitation and smoke-filled, overpriced cafes and hotels? If you still remember when France was our friend, and you’d like to relive those memories, go to Paris Las Vegas.

This glitzy Gallic resort outshines the grungy French original in every way. It has great facilities, superb restaurants, a fake Eiffel Tower and a faux Arc di Triumphe. It isn’t the real Paris, but will you really miss the pervasive Parisian pretensions, pickpockets, pollution, paranoia and pigeon poop?

Italy – The attitude in Italy is a bit less obnoxious than in France, but its dirty, graffiti-smeared cities teem with sleazy characters always on the prowl to mug, hustle and hassle American tourists, particularly seniors. For a more enjoyable taste of Italy, try Las Vegas’ three magnificently phony palazzos.

  • Visit the glitzy Venetian, where instead of boating on the real Venice’s smelly, polluted canals, you can ride gondolas through clean waterways to within steps of exclusive shops and casinos.
  • Bellagio has exquisite Italian decor throughout, topped off with authentically faux Renaissance ceiling paintings. The resort has the best in Continental dining, and enough Italian marble to make Michelangelo drop his chisel and try his fortune at the tables.
  • And for ultimate Italian ambiance as experienced by Francis Albert Sinatra, Dino Crocetti and Anthony DiBenedetto, visit that venerable Vegas landmark, Caesars Palace. Where else can you slurp gelatto while watching a mechanical Bacchus and other plaster gods extol the virtues of wine, gambling and shopping in Caesars Forum Shops?

The Caribbean: Everyone knows the natives of these islands were oppressed and exploited for centuries by Europeans. But, hey guys, enough already! Your economy depends on tourism, so stop scaring away US tourists with angry discourtesy, frequent strikes, heavy street crime and political posturing.

For a more tranquil, no-attitude Caribbean vacation, try basking on the pristine imitation beaches and glitzy ambiance at the super-luxurious Mandalay Bay Resort.Gimme Shelter – With war and terrorism on everyone’s mind, here’s some emergency advice for Vegas visitors and residents. In case of enemy attack, everyone is urged to rush to The Bellagio (home to what some think are the world’s tightest machines) and just crawl under the slots. Those machines will never be hit! (Aw, just kidding!)

Stallion Mountain Country Club Man O’ War

Stallion Mountain Country Club Man O’ War – Stallion Mountain Country Club is the trifecta of Las Vegas golf so bet big because the odds are with you here. The Man O’ War course was the first built at Stallion Mountain and was a host course in 1991 for the PGA Tour’s Las Vegas Invitational. Chip Beck shot a 59 that year, joining Al Geiberger (at the time) as the only men in history to shoot that score.

Megabucks Will Be World Record – Nevada Megabucks is currently at $34,955,600 and will continue to increase until someone wins it. That lucky person will also become part of history in the next edition of The Guinness Book of Records. Read More …

Fire Safety – In light of the tragic Rhode Island fire, many wonder how safe entertainment activities are. Especially in Las Vegas where many production shows use pyro and so many concerts and events roll through town. Clark County (Las Vegas) has 35 inspectors handling the roughly 200 special events that apply for the use of pyrotechnics. Paperwork is filled out weeks in advance and inspectors preview all effects. The depth of the staff insures that someone is on hand no matter what time of day an event happens.

Boogity, Boogity, Boogity – NASCAR’s UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 invades the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend and the event has been sold out for weeks. No ticket? Stuck home? Note the 11:30 AM Pacific start time and tune to your local Fox station. The best way to get to the race? Take the Cat Ride Race Shuttle (run by our local public bus service). This is the only way to go, as these busses use special routes that get you to the speedway in 45 minutes. I’m rooting for home-town boy #97 but the #2 is a sentimental favorite.

Rio Abrupt Cocktail Change – When the Rio opened, it was famous for beautiful, young cocktail waitresses in outfits that weren’t much more than a one-piece thong swimsuit. Now they are scrapping the entire cocktail staff to hire drink servers who will perform singing and dancing choreographed routines throughout the gaming area.

Some feel this is a way to get rid of cocktail waitresses who may not look at good in the skimpy outfits as they did a decade ago. Others see it as part of a bigger world-wide resort trend toward performing bartenders and waitresses. You can read The Rio’s press release and let us know what you think in our Rio Replaces Cocktail Servers forum. Think this will fly? Sound like a good change or will you miss the current waitresses? Let us know!

Ticket Advice – We often get asked how to get tickets to the very popular shows like “O”, Mystere, Siegfried and Roy, Blue Man Group, and Danny Gans. Yes we have them (at face value). Yes, they go very quickly. The key is to buy well in advance, but keep this in mind: some tickets are not released for sale more than three months ahead.

Our advice? Once your travel dates are set in stone, visit our Las Vegas Shows page and check availability. If that hard-to-get show has tickets available, buy them. If not available yet, keep checking back every few days and specifically 85-90 days before your visit. Most Las Vegas shows are now reserved seating, so even if you aren’t trying for a tough ticket, buying in advance often insures better seats.

Cook E. Ain’t No Rookie – Infamous club and lounge performer Cook E. Jarr is back at his Harrah’s Carnival Court gig midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Cook’s 30’th birthday is probably a couple decades behind him, but his audience keeps getting younger. We were at the outdoor venue Friday night as he played to a packed bar area and ripped through both “old school” and recent dance and R & B favorites in his inimitable style.

The dance floor was packed and while the crowd skews younger, no age group is out of place. With the weather warming up, Cook E. Jarr is a party worth checking out. Plus, the Carnival Court bartenders are some of the better “flair” bartenders around. Check out our Cook E. Jarr Carnival Court photo section.

$5000 Palms Bingo Cash Giveaway – The Key West room at the Palms Resort offers bingo every Thursday: March 6,13, 20 and 27. Session times are 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Palms bingo players will receive an entry at each March session to win part of a $5,000 cash giveaway. The drawings for the $5,000 cash giveaway will be held at every session on Thursday, March 27, yielding 28 lucky winners. Read More …

Featured Review: Dirk Arthur: The New Art of Magic

If Dirk Arthur’s name rings a bell, you may have seen the Bally’s Marquee over the past decade. Dirk was a featured act in Jubilee! and had his name in lights on the Las Vegas Strip. I’d seen him in the show, and he is good. His move to headlining status at The Silverton left people wondering if he could carry a show by himself and others wondering where The Silverton was!In an era with more shows than ever, trying their luck in just about every location and hotel you can try a show, it appears that Arthur’s gamble paid off. The Silverton’s showroom isn’t a converted lounge, but a full-sized, comfortable venue holding perhaps 400-500 people (my guess) and Dirk is filling it up on a consistent basis.

The show is aptly named The New Art Of Magic because Dirk’s specialties are huge scale illusions, the kind you often see with Lance Burton or David Copperfield. He levitates a Lamborghini and makes it vanish in mid-air. He puts a twist on the “saw the lady in half” by cutting her into nine pieces. He has an industrial size drill pierce right through him. And he makes white tigers vanish and switch places. Read More …

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It has been a busy week, seeing David Copperfield, Frank Sinatra, Jr., a Sunday trip out to Hoover Dam and Monday Night Football at the Hard Rock. Sinatra was fantastic, our Copperfield and Hard Rock football reviews are in this issue.

The weather has been stunning with highs in the mid-80’s and cool evenings that don’t get cold. I put the Rams/Raiders game on the car radio (my Raiders finally suffered a loss), put on the sun glasses, put down the car windows, and headed out to Hoover Dam on Sunday. Although a security checkpoint for cars, they wave most people through and the lack of truck traffic has made it easier and quicker to get to the dam. We’ll have that story soon.

We’ll be mentioning the Las Vegas Calendars for charity every couple of weeks until the end of the year. No excuses — these quality big photo calendars are only $5 including shipping with proceeds going to a great cause. We will not rest until every reader gets one!

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Hard Rock Football – The Joint at the Hard Rock was truly rocking this past Monday night for the Seahawks/49’ers game! Outside of the various parties held at local strip clubs, this is possibly the sexiest Monday Night Football (MNF) party in town. This is probably also your cheapest chance to check out the venue that has hosted The Stones, The Who, The Eagles and a laundry list of classic and modern rock shows.

Admission is free, and three huge screens show the game with the Michaels/Madden commentary and sound played over the concert quality sound system. Music is played during the commercials with scantily clad go-go girls dancing throughout the venue. Appetizers are available ($3-6) along with $1.50 Bud or Bud Light drafts to wash them down.

The event is always sponsored by a local radio station and not only draws plenty of locals, but a surprising number of women for a MNF event. While the Hard Rock is the place to see and be seen, this is serious football with plenty of loud cheering for both sides. Remember that MNF starts at 6 PM Pacific Time.

Club Rubber Halloween Costume Ball – Club Rubber and the N9NE Group presents a wicked party for the over 21 crowd. Costumes are mandatory.

  • Where: Rain in the Desert at the Palms
  • When: Oct. 31 at 9 p.m.
  • How Much: $25 (Women) $30 (Men)

Halloween Bingo Bash – Palms Casino Resort will host a special Halloween Bingo Bash on October 31 including cash giveaways.

Calendar For Charity – Now is the time to get a 2003 Las Vegas calendar and help a good cause. These are the same high quality Las Vegas calendars you find in hotels and gift shops at or below the gift shop price with all proceeds going to charity. Screamers Haunted House – is in the fourth year in operation. Designed and built by some of Las Vegas’ top scenic designers and illusion builders for the big shows here in town. Click for details on this fun magic-based fright experience!

Best Magic Show – You still have time to vote for your favorite Las Vegas magician in our “Best Of’ poll. Simply head to the main page of AccessVegas.Com and vote. For those wondering the ommission of a deserving David Copperfield (who spends about half the year playing Las Vegas), this time around we only included magicians who regularly headline their own show here year around.

Show Review: David Copperfield – Portal

Note: David Copperfield just finished a brief run at the MGM but returns at the end of the month to play Oct 31. – Nov. 6 and again Dec. 24 – Jan. 1. Due to the popularity of this show and high ticket demand, you may wish to reserve your seats as far in advance as possible.

I’d like to call David Copperfield a living legend. If you are old enough to gamble you have seen him do everything from walk through the Great Wall of China to make the Statue of Liberty vanish on his famous television specials. However, I won’t. “Living Legend” sometimes connotes a a respected performer, past their prime, churning it out for the buck. Mr. Copperfield is still very much at the top of his game.

He’s either a great actor or still loves what he is doing (probably a bit of both) because from the minute he hits the stage, he’s having fun and that makes you want to like him. He could be a nobody just starting out and you would like him. But he gets right into it with an illusion that has him floating upwards through a plate of steel.

Red Rock Canyon Tour by Bus – Just minutes away from the Las Vegas Strip lies Red Rock Canyon – one of the Mojave Desert’s most beautiful outdoor areas. The tour takes visitors into Spring Mountain State Park, a working ranch nestled at the base of the dramatic Wilson Cliffs that was once owned by eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes. The trip continues to the Red Rock Canyon National Recreation area with a stop at the visitor center followed by a leisurely lap around the 13-mile scenic loop.

Carnoustie, Turnberry, Royal Liverpool, Prestwick, Royal Lytham, Muirfield and Royal Birkdale also provided inspiration for this unique golf course.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! I’m back from a week in Florida to stick my toes in the sand and get a little rest and relaxation. It was interesting to be in traditionally hot and humid Florida and see places like Philadelphia, Boston, and even Bangor, Maine hotter than Florida and with a heat index above Las Vegas. Whew … I bet you guys are happy to see fall on the horizon!

Flying was uneventful. I continue to show up 1.5 hours before flights, clearing security in 15 minutes or less. I had a bit of a layover at Hartsfield (Atlanta) airport on the way down so I left the secure terminal area, got in line, went through security there in … 12 minutes. I should note that I usually travel midweek. If you are flying Friday noon or later, Sunday evening, or Monday morning you might want to follow the 2 hour rule just in case. In my book, flying is easier now than it was a year ago and you can’t keep me out of the skies, whether it is vacation or visiting family and friends.

CHEAP FOOD AND BOOZE – You’ve heard about all the great food specials and cheap booze in Las Vegas. But then you just end up paying $10 for a coffee shop sandwich because you didn’t know a $5 steak dinner was right next door. Or you pay $4.50 for a beer because you didn’t know which casinos have $1 beer. Not any more you don’t! Check out our new Food Specials section at Meal Deals — we even have a printable version you can print out and stuff in your suitcase. Enjoy!

MONORAIL – Construction on Las Vegas monorail is moving right along. The monorail will run from The Sahara south with stops at Las Vegas Hilton, Convention Center, Harrah’s, Flamingo, Bally’s and MGM. Scheduled completion is early 2004 and there is talk of extending it north to downtown and south to the airport. More info at Monorail

BEST BUFFET – You voted and the results are in! Bellagio Buffet topped the list with 24% of the vote, followed by Rio Seafood Buffet (18%), and Paris Las Vegas Buffet (13%). Honorable mention to Aladdin at 12%. This month, stop by AccessVegas.com and cast your vote on “What is the best Las Vegas area scenic attraction?”

NEW LIMO SEARCH – We have made it much easier to check limo rates, and you might be surprised at how inexpensive they are here. Grab a couple of friends to split the cost or treat that special lady to a special ride and live it up! Limo info at Limo

THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS – We are putting together a huge (and I mean HUGE) Frequently Asked Questions area on AccessVegas.com and we need your help! We live here, and that is a huge advantage when it comes to providing you firsthand information. We also understand our town can be overwhelming!

If you are a Vegas veteran visitor, what are some of the things you wished you knew ahead of time? What caught you off guard? What are you still curious about? Please ask us at (click) mailto:allvegastv@aol.com so we can build the most helpful site possible. Plus, we’ll do our best to answer your questions and concerns personally.

RESTAURANT REVIEW – Chef John says about McCormick and Schmick’s: “The selection of items on their menu can’t be beat in Las Vegas where seafood is concerned. Oysters, clams, mussels, lobster, shrimp, King crab, salmon, tuna etc. For the meat eaters they have some great cuts of meat and a wonderful rack of lamb.” Read his full review with photos at http://www.accessvegas.com/restaurants/mccormick-schmicks-seafood.htm

SHRINKING TIGER – is the latest illusion from Rick Thomas, whose great magic show plays twice each afternoon (dark Fridays) at The Tropicana. Thomas takes a live 500 pound royal white Bengal tiger and turns it into cuter, much smaller live tiger. This is an afternoon show that borders on evening show quality for a very modest afternoon price. SHOW REVIEW: La Femme

Last year, MGM put one of the final nails in the “family friendly” Las Vegas concept by closing their theme park and it is probably no coincidence Le Femme (pronounced La Fawm) opened around the same time. Unlike many Las Vegas shows which were inspired by famous productions, this is the original Crazy Horse show that has been titillating France since 1951. The name change was simply to avoid comparison with a local strip club of similar name.

The dancers are from the original troupe and meet rigorous specifications to get this prized job. You won’t see any bad boob jobs here. You won’t see any body modification, for that matter. The emphasis is on a natural, slender female form and dancers must be under 25 to be hired. La Femme is the unabashed celebration of the natural female nude.

The show is art. Each number is choreographed and lit in a way unique to La Femme. This isn’t a peep show, nor a jiggle show. During some of the numbers, you are taken to a place in your mind where you almost forget that nearly nude females are the centerpiece. This is not a bachelor party “whoop and holler” event.

The show is also erotic. The first number “God Save Our Bareskins” puts a new twist on the changing of the guard. Numbers like “See Thru, Peek-A-Boo” and “Vestal’s Desire” highlight the sexuality just by the titles (not to mention the shimmering female figures onstage).

The La Femme theatre was designed to re-create the Crazy Horse located on Avenue George V in Paris. The stage, design, fabric, colors and tabletops duplicate the original and this intimate theatre seats only patrons.

This is an upscale presentation geared to those looking for an artistic experience, a sampling for foreign culture, and a large dose of natural female form. Must be 21 to attend. Unlike the original, this one does not feature full nudity because of local laws. However, it comes very close.

La Femme plays at the MGM Hotel and Casino. For current times and ticket prices, please click Le Femme and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Yes, we are a week late. I’d like to tell I was playing hooky and enjoying the sunny 85 degree days but alas, the only tan I got was from fluorescent lighting as we continue to expand and upgrade our content. We started our “Best Of” poll (which will feature a new category every month for the next year), made All Vegas TV accessible to more users of various computers, and put up our brand new “New Year’s Eve” section.

We’ll talk about all that in a minute but I want to welcome Rick “Zig” Ziegler to the staff. Coming to us from Connecticut via Arizona, he’s already up to speed on the summer heat we’ll soon see, and he loves the tourism side of Las Vegas. He’ll be playing a major “behind the scenes” roll in adding and expanding our content.

BEST OF – It seems like every publication in town has their own “Best Of Las Vegas” poll. Some are legit but locals vote and most locals never go near The Strip. Others may anoint their better advertisers as the “best.” We are going to do it a little differently! Every month on the main page of http://www.accessvegas.com we’ll have a new question for newsletter readers and site visitors can vote on! You are the visitors — your voice should count!

We have put in a double redundant system to keep people from “stuffing the ballot box.” I get one vote, just like anyone else. You can always click on the “Results” link and see how the voting is going for yourself at any time. This month’s question is “What is the best luxury hotel in Las Vegas?” Go vote now at http://www.accessvegas.com !

TOURS AND MORE TOURS – Our expanded tours section is up. We have far more tours than ever before, plus great photos and specific tour details. Whether it is a quick visit to Hoover Dam or an all day adventure by Hummer, ATV, or even horses we have you covered. Plus, we aren’t going to screw with you. Many companies quote a crazy low price, then tack on the taxes, fees, and surcharges when you show up. The price we quote and let you book online is the complete price you pay. Check out all the great tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours and really see the beauty beyond The Strip!

ST. TROPEZ SUITES – I usually don’t mention hotel deals here, but this one is so good I might take a couple of days off and take advantage of it. We are offering this resort suite hotel from $59 a night. Where is it? How about right across the street from the Hard Rock, one of the hottest casinos/dining/drinking in town! You are 1.5 miles from The Strip, but with the money you save you can rent some wheels, grab a cab, or just take the Hard Rock’s free shuttle to The Strip (open to everyone). I’d look into this one now, before someone over there at the St. Tropez sobers up and yanks this great deal! Click http://www.accessvegas.com — the special is at the top of the page.

GREAT HAPPY HOUR – What will $1.95 buy you in Vegas?

* Half Pound Cheeseburger and Fries
* Onion Rings
* Jalepeno Poppers
* Buffalo Wings
* Fried Clam Strips
* Pork Eggrolls
* Beef Taquitos
* Fried Calamari
* Roma Tomato and Garlic Bruschetta

Where? McCormick and Schmick’s just east of The Strip on Flamingo at Restaurant Row (set back kitty-corner from Terrible’s Hotel). This place is becoming the unofficial hangout for AccessVegas.Com and ChefLive.Com crew and at those prices we don’t even bother to bargain for discounts. Specials are subject to change, run Monday – Friday; 3:30 – 6:30 PM and again later from 9:30 – 11 PM (close). No take out, $2 min. beverage purchase. (702) 836-9000

AIRPORT WINNERS – Two McCarran (Las Vegas) Airport passengers went home happy in the past month. While declining to release their names to media, each of these winners hit $1,000,000-plus jackpots waiting for their flights! On May 9, a Chicago bound passenger in Terminal 2 whacked “Wheel of Fortune” for $1.3 million and change. Twelve days earlier on April 27, another passenger took a “Wheel of Fortune” machine in Terminal one for $1.6 million and change. I’m guessing they both had no problem upgrading to first class with that kind of fresh loot.

NEW YEAR’S EVE – The biggest party night of the year is Las Vegas’ biggest night and now we over 100 photos plus streaming video highlights online in one spot. This includes new photos from this past year including the fireworks! In keeping with our “give you the scoop” attitude, we also give you the complete lowdown on just about everything you need to know to enjoy this huge event. Go enjoy our new site section at http://www.las-vegas-new-years-eve.com

FREE MAGIC – World-class close-up magician Michael Close has returned to the Houdini Lounge inside the Monte Carlo. A local favorite, he has drawn raves from Lance Burton, Penn and Teller, Mac King, and more. He performs each Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 PM until 1 AM. Houdini Lounge has always been a great place to relax and regain your sanity and this added bonus is worth seeing. No cover charge, must be 21.

UH-OH – I goofed last time. Larry G. Jones’ plays Thursday – Monday at 5 PM with his free show at Fitzgerald’s downtown. More on Larry “The Man of 1002 Voices” Jones at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/larry-jones-las-vegas-shows.htm

THE VIEW – No, not the female dominated TV show. This is the name of the new nightclub at Harrah’s. Thursday through Saturday night, Harrah’s Range Steakhouse is transformed into a nightclub with a DJ spinning music from the 70’s to now, dancing girls, and an appetizer menu. Not to mention the great view the venue affords, looking directly over the center of The Strip. Doors open at midnight. Guys are $10 and ladies are free. Proper dress required.

THE AMAZING KRESKIN – is playing Silverton Hotel and Casino now through June 9. Show runs Thursday – Sunday and tickets are $13 – 16. The Silverton is about 5 minutes south of the bottom of The Strip just down the freeway. Reservations and more info at (702) 263-7777

SCOTT AND JENNY – A big high-five to our magical friends Scott and Jenny Alexander who just inked a nice long-term deal to perform at Caesars Magical Empire (reviewed at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/caesars-magical-empire-las-vegas-shows.htm ). This is a great show, and their permanent addition is icing on the cake as they are topnotch magicians. Jenny’s site is at http://www.jennyalexander.com

NEONOPOLIS – opened downtown over the weekend. Kind of. The theaters and food court plus a handful of retail shops have opened. The full slate of shops and galleries aren’t scheduled to all be open until fall. We are finally getting a Jillian’s at Neonopolis, which is good news for locals and visitors that like to have fun. Words don’t describe Jillian’s. Just go look at their site http://www.jillians.com

ALL VEGAS TV – We want everyone to be able to enjoy our streaming online videos of Las Vegas. However, with the various computers, browsers, and operating systems in use some were shut out. We now have alternate links for all of our videos at http://tv.accessvegas.com — if it didn’t work before, try the new alternate link on each video page.

WINNER! Carol Waller of McLoud, OK was the winner of our McCormick and Schmick’s $50.00 gift certificate in our All Vegas TV contest a couple months ago.
