Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! My condolences to our friends in Chicago, who not only had to deal with the loss of “Da Bears” but only with below zero temperatures over the weekend. (For our international readers, freezing is 32 F here. Zero here is -17 C)! We in Las Vegas had 65 on Super Bowl Sunday, and the past couple of days have been in the low 70’s. If you are a Bears fan, let me suggest a trip our way to drown your sorrows and warm your bodies.

Maverick for Valentines Day In Vegas – One of the hottest, most unique Valentines Day activities here in Las Vegas is a night flight over the stunning lights of the Las Vegas Strip on Maverick Helicopter Tours. Enjoy this preview video (broadband) and reach more info on Maverick Las Vegas Night Flights.

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 2 — Multiple Poker Tournaments – with Victor H. Royer. Multitable tournaments generally mirror precisely the kind of tournaments with which you may be familiar in the real-world brick-and-mortar type casino and poker rooms and card rooms that feature and offer them. Such multitable tournaments usually take the form and structure of the well-known WPT and WSOP tournaments, and consequently they are easily understood by anyone who has already played in a land-based poker tournament. For those who are familiar only with the Internet, playing multitable poker tournaments is very easy. The word “multitable” clearly indicates that this is a tournament that will be played on several tables, and that therefore there will be many participants. Click to Read Complete Article

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Our best wishes to Celine Dion who is taking some unscheduled time off to recover from a severe respiratory virus. She’s taking the time needed to heal and rest in anticipation of her 2007 gigs at Caesars. We have Celine tickets on sale through June of 2007, and her replacements (Cher and Bette Midler) have already been signed. If you have been putting off seeing Celine or want to catch the show again, do not delay in getting tickets now. Celine Dion Tickets

The rumble for New Year’s Eve is heating up in a huge way and as now is the norm, $500,000 worth of fireworks will be shot off from hotels all the way up and down The Strip. If being inside at what are sure to be the hottest club parties on the planet, you need to be snapping up tickets or making your bottle/table reservations now. ASAP.

The huge party is the Nightclubs.com Party at the Empire Ballroom and we have that and information on all the New Years Eve Las Vegas Nightclub Parties or we’ll have people on hand to personally help you with the 411 if you call 800-696-5721.

We have a new section for links to stories about the smoking ban at the end of our usual news story links section later in this issue. For those who just want an executive summary:

A judge has temporarily halted enforcement of the new rules until a hearing on the constitutionality of the law has been heard. The anti-smoking forces who wrote the law exempted casinos (nobody would want to take on that fight). But in doing so, the law may unfairly discriminate against the local bar and grills all over Las Vegas (which are essentially min-casinos).

Mayor Oscar Goodman makes it no secret that he loves his martinis. So much that he’s going to teach a one-credit class at Community College of Southern Nevada this February on how to make the perfect martini. (No, this isn’t a joke). Gotta love Vegas!

If you are thinking of coming for New Year’s Eve, it’s time go book. Now. Room prices will only rise, and tickets to the hottest events are already starting to get very tight. We have a ton of links and information in this issue, and as always, your best bet for hotel reservations is Las Vegas Hotel Deals.

Gambling Talk: Playing Big Pairs in Tournaments — Part One – with Victor H. Royer. Over the next series of articles, I am going to ask you to consider some of the big pairs in Poker and how you should (could) play them in poker tournaments. As odd as this may seem, there are many different ways in which you can (or should) play big pairs, including pocket Aces. This also includes hands like Ace-King.

Many players think (feel) that these are the kinds of hands that play themselves. While it may be OK for you to play like that at home, that’s not what you should (ought) to do in poker tournaments. Even big pairs like Aces aren’t always candidates for the same kind of consideration, and most certainly so for poker tournaments. So, here we are going to explore some of the possibilities, and some of the reasons for them. Click to Read Complete Article

Really enjoy the newsletter, finding it very informative.

The thing that bothers me, is, all the old names are dying. The Dunes, Sands and Hacienda have all been razed and the property rebuilt upon with the new properties having new names (not a bad idea when it comes to the Hacienda).

Now it’s Stardust. I used to be a frequent guest and would much rather it retain it’s name, rather than the proposed Echelon Place. This property isn’t changing ownership so a name change will do nothing but distance former patrons.

Thanks

Jim O’Hara

Chicago

Ted Responds:

Having lived here since 1993 (long enough to get used to the actual hotels you are referencing), I couldn’t agree more. In a few more years, most newer visitors and new residents will probably think the street names “Sands” and “Desert Inn” were some cute street names thought up by home developers.

I am pleased to see that Tropicana Ave. will continue to lead to The Tropicana for now (the upgrade of the property by new owners at this time doesn’t appear to involve a name change).

However, I do wish that Venetian owner Sheldon Anderson had done something more to let The Sands name live on (outside of keeping the convention center so named). It would be nice if the Encore addition to Wynn Las Vegas had a “Desert Inn Lounge” and similar with Stardust.

Couple of interesting quick notes:

  • I was among the first to note what a lousy, stupid name Echelon Place is, a comment that is echoed by many local pundits. They still have time to change it and I hope they do.
  • Of all the names you mentioned, The Hacienda actually lives on. A small hotel/casino between Boulder City and Hoover Dam now has the name, as a result of some of the former Hacienda parent company owners being involved the hotel by Hoover Dam.

Bottom line: The new Vegas is exciting, but some connections to the past would be welcome. If anything, the vibe people of all ages come here for is the swinging times that were originally made famous by the Rat Pack.

Hi Ted,Love reading your column. My friend and I (both in our 60’s) stayed at Wynn Resort recently. It was fabulous and spoils me for staying anywhere else! I have been going to Vegas since the 60’s and used to stay at the Sands…..then Harrah’s. By the way, what have they done to Harrah’s? We loved Rita Rudner’s show but the casino was awful and used to be so nice and low-key.

Thanks,

Sara

Ted Responds:

Harrah’s has “cranked things up a few notches” over the past few years to achieve a party atmosphere to attract a younger crowd. But that does raise some interesting questions to our readers near or in their retirement years:

1. With so many hotels wanting to be “hip” and cater to people barely old enough to drink, what hotels do you no longer visit, and more importantly, which hotels do you love and feel very comfortable at?

2. Now that are are at (or near) retirement, do you come to Las Vegas as much as you used to, more often, or do you feel that Las Vegas isn’t so much your cup of tea and don’t visit so much? If not so much, where else are you going on vacation (gambling city or otherwise)?

We have set up an area of our message boards for you to weigh in:
Is Las Vegas Still OK If You Aren’t 21?

Please remember: Our message boards are sometimes running slow during peak times. Please be patient: The pages will appear and you will be able to read and post after a few seconds.

Note from Ted: We got quite a few responses regarding my reply to a letter from Dice Doc in our July 5, 2005 issue. I’m posting one of the responses, sent by famed Las Vegas gaming writer Jean “Queen of Comps” Scott:

Readers WriteDear Ted,

Of course, I was interested in the latest reader letter about comps. And it is not my purpose to make everyone comp hounds! But I would like to point out that there are many ways to get comps without jeopardizing your gambling bankroll or feeling that you “owe” a casino your undying loyalty.

1. Just by using your players card and earning points and then redeeming them for comps is a very unpressured way to get comps. Sometimes this doesn’t even involve interacting with a clerk at the players club desk, but can be done at a kiosk.

2. Even at the highest levels, you aren’t required to have dealings with a host (although you will often get more comps if you do). Play at a very high level with your players card (or give the card to the dealer at table games so your play will be tracked) and you will receive top-notch mail offers for rooms, shows, etc. Most of these offers will have a phone number for something called VIP reservations which you can call and simply make the reservation there if you don’t want to make it through a host.

3. Of course comps aren’t “free” – the casino expects/hopes you will lose more on the games than you will get in comps. However, there is no reason that you have to fulfill the casino’s hopes and expectations. We play skillful video poker, picking the best pay schedules and the best slot club benefits like cashback, bounce-back cash or Free Play, and the best promotions, like card-of-the day or bonus-point times. Therefore we do not lose ANY money in the long run in our play, so the magnificent comps we get ARE free.

And even if you don’t play quite so skillfully but you try to play the games where the casino has a smaller edge and you always use your slot club card or ask to be tracked at the tables and you take advantage of some promotions, you can often get comps that have more value than what you lose on the casino floor. If you were going to take $200 out of your pocket to pay for a casino room and meal, it would be frugal if you earned $100 in comps to cut that expense in half. Then you would have more money to put in your gambling bankroll and you could play longer!

4. Of course hosts work for the casino. But they also know that most players gamble at more than one casino. In 21 years of gambling in casinos, we have never had a host that was “jealous” that we played at other casinos. They do try to make your stay as pleasant as possible so you will WANT to come back. But you have no obligation to do so and shouldn’t feel that you “owe” a casino for past comps.

5. I always say that you should never play JUST for comps, but you might as well collect the comps that you have earned during the time when you were playing anyway!

Sincerely,

Jean Scott, Queen of Comps

Ted Responds

It was great to hear from Jean, someone we’ve known and appreciated over the past decade here in Las Vegas. She and her husband Brad are truly some of the more enjoyable people in this business.

They both just had a huge Las Vegas experience, winning the top prize of $500,000 in a Caesars Palace slot tournament. Want to hear the kicker? The won their entry into the tournament by playing a specified amount of slot play (high limit video poker for them), in which they played by the rules and methods she writes about in her books!

I appreciate Jean taking the time to read and respond and wish her much continued success. Her books are well worth reading!

Reviewed August, 2005
by Nancy Hruska

“George Burns” started off the show at The Orleans Showroom recently, cracking a joke about the well-known impressionist Rich Little. “When I die, they’ll have to bury Rich instead.”

A native Canadian, Rich Little has been getting under the skin of and “becoming” celebrities and political figures alike for the last 40 years. Some of his impersonated victims include heavy weight celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone, Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzeneger, and Clint Eastwood. But a lot of his voice and mannerism material comes from Baby Boomer friendly figures such as Dr. Ruth, the infamous Frank Sinatra, and even Kermit the Frog to name only a few of his 200 voice collection. Oh, and every U.S. President since Kennedy were certainly not spared by the “Master of Mimic.” Click To Read The Entire Review …

Gambling Talk: The Mathematics Of Poker and Gambling – with Victor H. Royer. There are quite a few people in the gaming business, particularly writers and gaming experts, who are often prone to overusing mathematical percentages, frequencies of occurrence, probabilities and so. Show Review – Xtreme Magic Starring Dirk Arthur

Reviewed July 20, 2005
Nancy Hruska

The Tropicana’s very own Dirk Arthur lives up to his “extreme” reputation in the most outrageous ways a Las Vegas magic show could dream: big cats, helicopters, trains, and heart pumping theatrical effects. Dirk Arthur has added some extra quality ingredients to the already renowned mind-boggling illusions. His fast paced show is also capable of reminding his audience of the mystery of magic through timeless, classic tricks and humor suitable for all ages. In addition viewers get a sneak peek into the humanitarian side of Dirk Arthur: It looks as though his cats reserve the right to upstage anyone. Click to read the complete review …

“Crazy Girl” From Poland Returns – The Polish “Crazy Girl” has returned to the show at the Riviera Hotel & Casino after a two-year hiatus and is surprised at the growth of Las Vegas.

She recently said, “I was in `Crazy Girls’ during 2001 and 2002. I’m a native of Bytow, Poland. I have a brother and a baby sister who is younger. She is in middle school. I went to one of the best ballet school in Poland. It is in Gdansk. I was in national competitions for ballet. My dance training is mostly classical. We train for nine years in school from ages 9-18.” Read full story …

Wynn Las Vegas Opens – The most anticipated casino opening in the history of Las Vegas took place this week!

Wynn-ing On A Budget – Even regular Vegas visitors might not have ventured north of The Venetian in years. Older resort properties were bypassed to see all the new South Strip resorts built during the past decade.

However … The opening of Wynn Las Vegas squarely moves the focus of “hot” back to the north. If you want to stay close to Wynn Las Vegas but you aren’t on a Steve Wynn budget, refresh yourselves with these established favorites. The following lodging choices are all within a comfortable walk of the new Wynn resort:

Attention Monorail Riders: You can see Wynn Las Vegas from the monorail, but no stop is close. Get off at Harrah’s and enjoy the walk past The Venetian.

Show NotesAnthony Cools The Uncensored Hypnotist has resurfaced at Paris Las Vegas, new dates are on sale for Barry Manilow (who is drawing great reviews), Forever Plaid is well worth the quick trip over to the Gold Coast (next to The Rio), and Hawaii’s Society of Seven is thriving with the addition of Lani Misalucha.

If you miss 80’s and 90’s rock/metal the trashy styles on sexy women, Erocktica is drawing one of the wildest crowds in town at The Rio. (Word is that the women in the crowd often get more wild than the women on stage)! On another adult note, Bite is the new erotic and sensual topless show at The Stratosphere.

Cousin Vinnie and the Ba-Da-Bing gang are inviting you to an evening that roars only with good fund, good music and an atmosphere that recaptures an era at the new Speakeasy Cabaret at Ba-Da-Bing at the legendary Stardust. And true to form, the gang’s all here. Cousin Vinnie and the flapper’s, dolls, goombas and gangsters.

Hey, what’s it a little ba-da-bang-bang between friends? We’re shootin’ from the “hip” and believe it when we tell you that this is the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights. You can dance to the sounds of Karin Denise and the Sin City Boyz Show Band, enjoy easy conversation with friends, meet cousin Vinnie and the Ba-Da-Bing gang, and enjoy an alcoholic beverage or two (no Prohibition here!). Cousin Vinnie says: “Be dere or else!” Click for Speakeasy Cabaret at Ba-da-Bing info.

Crazy Girls Showgirl Controversy Puts Riviera On The Map – After 18 years it’s a household name: Makes history as “LV’s Sexiest Topless Revue”

Norbert Aleman, creator and producer of “Crazy Girls,” said, “‘Crazy Girls’ and ‘La Cage’ are the backbone of the Riviera’s entertainment. I began at the Riviera with a 12-week engagement and here we are 18-20 years later. I was told that we would never survive and we faced controversies with the National Organization of Women, Las Vegas City Hall and a powerful state senator and we survived it all. Public opinion was very supportive and we are still here. During the early to mid-’90s ‘Crazy Girls’ was the only show of its type and now there are nine copies of the show in Las Vegas.”

Norbert continued, “When the show began in 1987 we had a predominately male audience and bachelor parties and now it’s Middle America with half couples some women and some men in small groups. That’s how the mores of America are changing. The show has gained wide acceptance. Now the taboo is the (gentleman’s) clubs while the ‘Crazy Girls’ appeals to most adults.”

It all began at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. At 18 years, “Crazy Girls” is the longest running topless cabaret in the history of Las Vegas!

Gambling Talk: You Can Bet On it Blackjack Overview – with Victor H. Royer. is the second of a four part audio series. Featured Story: Carrot Top, Greens of Las Vegas

Carrot Top – I finally checked out Carrot Top on the invite of his local PR staff. He’s been headlining here for years, and all I knew about him was his Jay Leno appearances and the phone commercials that seem to play non-stop. Was I ever happy to finally check him out live!

A prop comedian, Carrot Top’s stage is filled with trunks and trunks of gags. Sounds like it would get boring after five minutes? Not even. This skilled performer rarely let up, with gag after gag after gag that had the audience laughing non-stop for the entire performance. Nothing was off-limits, from politics to NASCAR to poking fun of the very hotel he was performing at.

The show is PG-13 because of a little bit of language, but nothing that will make anyone blush. And he pulls off his entire show without getting into raunchy humor, making this the perfect fun show to take your teenagers or even Grandma to. Carrot Top plays now through September 17 at the MGM Grand. Catch him this time, but if you can’t we’ll remind you before his next headlining run.

Greens Of Las Vegas – Want some golf, but don’t want to take up hours of your vacation time or travel miles from The Strip? We had a great time at the Greens of Las Vegas, close to The Strip and just south of the Hard Rock Hotel.

Imagine a top-notch golf course minus the fairways. Hole after hole of challenging but fun putting greens outdoors in a beautiful setting. This isn’t mini-golf, but carries a couple great advantages: You can enjoy the course in about an hour, and the non-golfers in your group can still play and enjoy this experience because no fairway driving is involved.

The greens has a full pro shop, and a comfortable, upscale “19’th hole” restaurant and bar called Bogee’s. A full golf experience that doesn’t eat up your entire vacation!

Check out the Greens of Las Vegas website for more information, and a couple of great money saving coupons. With the perfect, warm fall Las Vegas weather at hand, we had a great time and you will too on your next trip!

Hello from Las Vegas! We visited the Crazy Girls show last week. We haven’t seen it since comedian Joe Trammel took over hosting duties. The show dancers are now even a more risquÚ. Plus, Trammel spoofs everthing from Richard Simmons to Lord Of The Dance and his quick-paced comedy was great.

Crazy Girls is a must for “guys night out” but still plenty sensual enough for couples. The night we went, couples made up the bulk of the audience, including one who had been married for over 50 years! Talk about keeping spice in the marriage! Featured Review: Hypnolarious Starring Terry Stokes

Hypnotist shows conjure up all kinds of ideas, especially to those who have never attended one. Am I going to be put under a crazy trance? Are people going to take their clothes off? Is this some kind of mystic seance?

Put those crazy notions aside and get ready to laugh and laugh and laugh when you go see Hypnolarious starring Terry Stokes. Yes, Stokes is a premier hypnotist but more importantly he is a funny guy. He’s a true entertainer. You’ll leave having enjoyed yourself.

Like other hypnotist shows, volunteers are chosen from the audience. Before being hypnotized, Stokes tells them that after the show they will find their clothes neatly folded by the side of the stage after the show (just a joke, this show is PG-13 but no one gets naked). Read More …

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! I’m back from a week in Florida to stick my toes in the sand and get a little rest and relaxation. It was interesting to be in traditionally hot and humid Florida and see places like Philadelphia, Boston, and even Bangor, Maine hotter than Florida and with a heat index above Las Vegas. Whew … I bet you guys are happy to see fall on the horizon!

Flying was uneventful. I continue to show up 1.5 hours before flights, clearing security in 15 minutes or less. I had a bit of a layover at Hartsfield (Atlanta) airport on the way down so I left the secure terminal area, got in line, went through security there in … 12 minutes. I should note that I usually travel midweek. If you are flying Friday noon or later, Sunday evening, or Monday morning you might want to follow the 2 hour rule just in case. In my book, flying is easier now than it was a year ago and you can’t keep me out of the skies, whether it is vacation or visiting family and friends.

CHEAP FOOD AND BOOZE – You’ve heard about all the great food specials and cheap booze in Las Vegas. But then you just end up paying $10 for a coffee shop sandwich because you didn’t know a $5 steak dinner was right next door. Or you pay $4.50 for a beer because you didn’t know which casinos have $1 beer. Not any more you don’t! Check out our new Food Specials section at Meal Deals — we even have a printable version you can print out and stuff in your suitcase. Enjoy!

MONORAIL – Construction on Las Vegas monorail is moving right along. The monorail will run from The Sahara south with stops at Las Vegas Hilton, Convention Center, Harrah’s, Flamingo, Bally’s and MGM. Scheduled completion is early 2004 and there is talk of extending it north to downtown and south to the airport. More info at Monorail

BEST BUFFET – You voted and the results are in! Bellagio Buffet topped the list with 24% of the vote, followed by Rio Seafood Buffet (18%), and Paris Las Vegas Buffet (13%). Honorable mention to Aladdin at 12%. This month, stop by AccessVegas.com and cast your vote on “What is the best Las Vegas area scenic attraction?”

NEW LIMO SEARCH – We have made it much easier to check limo rates, and you might be surprised at how inexpensive they are here. Grab a couple of friends to split the cost or treat that special lady to a special ride and live it up! Limo info at Limo

THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS – We are putting together a huge (and I mean HUGE) Frequently Asked Questions area on AccessVegas.com and we need your help! We live here, and that is a huge advantage when it comes to providing you firsthand information. We also understand our town can be overwhelming!

If getting ready for your first ever visit, what are you are wondering about, or want to be better prepared for? If you are a Vegas veteran visitor, what are some of the things you wished you knew ahead of time? What caught you off guard? What are you still curious about? Please ask us at (click) mailto:allvegastv@aol.com so we can build the most helpful site possible. Plus, we’ll do our best to answer your questions and concerns personally.

RESTAURANT REVIEW – Chef John says about McCormick and Schmick’s: “The selection of items on their menu can’t be beat in Las Vegas where seafood is concerned. Oysters, clams, mussels, lobster, shrimp, King crab, salmon, tuna etc. For the meat eaters they have some great cuts of meat and a wonderful rack of lamb.” Read his full review with photos at http://www.accessvegas.com/restaurants/mccormick-schmicks-seafood.htm

SHRINKING TIGER – is the latest illusion from Rick Thomas, whose great magic show plays twice each afternoon (dark Fridays) at The Tropicana. Thomas takes a live 500 pound royal white Bengal tiger and turns it into cuter, much smaller live tiger. This is an afternoon show that borders on evening show quality for a very modest afternoon price. Our review and ticket information at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/rick-thomas-magic-las-vegas-shows.htm

LAS VEGAS SEARCH – If you visit AccessVegas.com regularly (and you should … we always add great new stuff), you have noticed our Las Vegas Search box on every page. SHOW REVIEW: La Femme

Last year, MGM put one of the final nails in the “family friendly” Las Vegas concept by closing their theme park and it is probably no coincidence Le Femme (pronounced La Fawm) opened around the same time. Unlike many Las Vegas shows which were inspired by famous productions, this is the original Crazy Horse show that has been titillating France since 1951. The name change was simply to avoid comparison with a local strip club of similar name.

The dancers are from the original troupe and meet rigorous specifications to get this prized job. You won’t see any bad boob jobs here. You won’t see any body modification, for that matter. The emphasis is on a natural, slender female form and dancers must be under 25 to be hired. La Femme is the unabashed celebration of the natural female nude.

The show is art. Each number is choreographed and lit in a way unique to La Femme. This isn’t a peep show, nor a jiggle show. During some of the numbers, you are taken to a place in your mind where you almost forget that nearly nude females are the centerpiece. This is not a bachelor party “whoop and holler” event.

The show is also erotic. The first number “God Save Our Bareskins” puts a new twist on the changing of the guard. Numbers like “See Thru, Peek-A-Boo” and “Vestal’s Desire” highlight the sexuality just by the titles (not to mention the shimmering female figures onstage).

The La Femme theatre was designed to re-create the Crazy Horse located on Avenue George V in Paris. The stage, design, fabric, colors and tabletops duplicate the original and this intimate theatre seats only patrons.

This is an upscale presentation geared to those looking for an artistic experience, a sampling for foreign culture, and a large dose of natural female form. Must be 21 to attend. Unlike the original, this one does not feature full nudity because of local laws. However, it comes very close.

La Femme plays at the MGM Hotel and Casino. For current times and ticket prices, please click Le Femme and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

JACKPOT – Major William Tracy had been in Las Vegas for less than a
day when he struck it rich early Wednesday morning, winning $3 million
on a Wheel of Fortune(R) dollars machine at the Flamingo Las Vegas.
“I just sat there staring at the payline, trying to figure out what
was happening when a security guard walked up to tell me that I had
just won $3 million. I’m still in shock,” he said. Tracy, 32, and
his wife, Alicia, are in Las Vegas to attend graduation ceremonies at
the USAF Weapons School at Nellis AFB. Tracy, who flies an F-15C
fighter, is currently stationed in Japan. The Tracys aren’t sure what
they’ll do with their winnings. “Make some investments, help our
families. It’s a lot to figure out. But there is one thing we are
sure of — we don’t want things to change … at least, not too
much,” Tracy said.

MONORAIL – Right now, early construction on the first phase of the Las Vegas monorail is underway. Running from the MGM to the Desert Inn, the line is eventually slated to run downtown. Proposed extensions run both to the airport and along the casinos on the West side of The Strip. Full story with map at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-29-Tue-2001/news/16179719.html

MARINERS -áááá The Seattle baseball team continues to terrorize their opponents, as well as the Vegas sportsbooks. Count the Mirage as one of many Nevada casinos that would welcome some avalanche control. It listed the Mariners at 45-to-1 odds to win the World Series before the season started, a number the team has pared to 7-2, second only to the Yankees’ 5-2. Full story (which includes a little inside peak at how baseball lines are set) at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-1.htm

ENERGY CRUNCH – is continuing to be felt by the hotels here. While Nevada has secured enough energy for the summer, the prices are on the rise. Harrah’s Entertainment, Station Casinos and the Riviera Hotel and Casino have tacked a $3-a-night surcharge on hotel rooms at their Nevada casinos. Whether to charge customers more is especially a dilemma for the more expensive casinos on the Strip, where image is everything and customers could perceive such a move as tacky. Bellagio, for example, now has a system that adjusts air conditioning and turns off lights when offices aren’t used. Full story at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-2.htm

EPICUREAN AFFAIR – The 11th annual Epicurean Affair, featuring signature dishes from local restaurants, wine, a silent auction and live entertainment, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. June 20 at The Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd. South. More than 50 restaurants plan to participate in the event, dubbed “The Rhythm of Flavor” and carrying a Latin American theme. Details at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-30-Wed-2001/living/16149617.html

NO KIDDING – In light of the recent “Kids In Vegas” debate, I was informed about No Kidding. This is a group of people who are child-free by choice. They are adamant that they don’t hate children nor are trying to pass anti-child laws. It is just a social group for people who have no kids and enjoy social events with others in the same position. The national page is at http://mypage.direct.ca/j/jerry_s/ and the Las Vegas chapter can be contacted at (click) mailto:lasvegas@nokidding.net

VEGAS FOR KIDS – If you are bringing your kids to Las Vegas, “101 Things for Kids in Las Vegas” by Carol Stout is a must have. Instead of dragging them through the hot sun or locking them in the room while you gamble, make the trip fun for them. This excellent book is available online from Amazon.Com at
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1886161208/invegascom

LIFE OF A DEALER – CNN profiles people in various careers, asking them questions about the job and their life. They just profiled a Vegas blackjack dealer at http://www.cnn.com/2001/CAREER/dayonthejob/06/12/casino/index.html

THE ECONOMY – For all the reasons Californians come here, there’s a growing list of reasons why, this summer, they may not. Higher gas prices. Hesitancy to leave homes untended during rolling blackouts. A softening economy. The lure of Vegas-style Indian casinos closer to home. But Las Vegas can spin an economic threat like a roulette wheel, and executives here say they expect this summer to be as strong as last year’s — especially as travelers reexamine their more exotic vacation plans. Full story at http://www.latimes.com/travel/vegas/stories/20010603/t000046305.html

STEVE WYNN HAS BURPED – It’s an inside joke — I’ve told friends that some people are so into Vegas that they would like an update every time Steve Wynn burps. (Wynn is former Mirage Resorts founder / CEO and that man who bought the Desert Inn to put a new resort there.) The most recent courtesy of R-J columnist Norm! is a massive makeover of the famed golf course, a large lake with lakefront condos, and a Cirque de Soleil-type show. Read full details at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jun-03-Sun-2001/news/16221974.html

WIRELESS CHECK-IN – The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas plans to launch a pilot program this summer that’s aimed at using wireless devices to ensure that rooms are ready for arriving guests. Guests will meet hotel clerks at any of several entrances, including the car drop-off area, and be able to show a credit card to check reservations via a wireless LAN connection to a server in real time. Once the reservation has been confirmed, the clerk will be able to encode a room-key card for the guest. Full story at http://www.thestandard.com/article/0,1902,26682,00.html

KIDS QUEST – The new Palms Hotel Casino (under construction near The Rio) is going to have a child care center. These centers are already popular at some “local’s” casinos around town. Story at http://twincities.bcentral.com/twincities/stories/2001/05/07/daily25.html

SOUTH STRIP – Recently, a continuing series on urban hikes in Las Vegas focuses on the Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, and Four Seasons hotels. Included are good synopses of the attractions at each and worth printing out before you next trip. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-13-Sun-2001/living/16040904.html

CONCERTS AND SHOWS:

35TH ANNUAL VICTOR AWARDS – The Las Vegas Hilton will host the 35th Annual Victor Awards June 23, honoring the world’s greatest athletes and coaches, with event proceeds going to City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute. The event will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net from the Hilton Theater starting at 5:00 p.m. PST/8:00 p.m. EST. Tickets are available through the City of Hope for $50 and black tie is required. To purchase tickets, call City of Hope at 800-544-3541, extension 26206.

Each year, the Academy of Victor Sports Awards recognizes star athletes from baseball, basketball, football, track and field, boxing, tennis and more. This year’s nominees include Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Marion Jones, Venus Williams, Eddie George, Mario Lemieux, Cynthia Cooper and Tiger Woods.

NUDE CABARET – MGM is launching “La Femme” in partnership with the infamous Crazy Horse of Paris, France on June 14. The name was changed for Vegas to avoid any legal trouble with the local strip club of the same name. While promising to show a lot of skin in a theatrical fashion, Clark County liquor laws prohibit total nudity anywhere booze is served so the producers of the new show are being slightly creative with their “all nude” presentation. FEATURE STORIES: The Rat Pack Is Back

Sometimes I really look forward to reviewing the shows, and other times it’s just another day at the office. Granted, I’m not complaining — there are worse offices than a Las Vegas showroom and since 90% of my time is spent in front of the computer, it is always pleasant to get out in the “real world.”

The Rat Pack Is Back is a show I was truly looking forward to seeing. Up until recently, the show had been on a month-to-month engagement at the Sahara which didn’t make it a good review candidate. I don’t want to tell you about something that might be closed by the time you get to town! However, with a new one-year contract (and possible extensions), this show is here to stay.

I was looking forward to it because although not yet born in the heyday of the Rat Pack, I’ve always been curious about the vibe they brought to Las Vegas. I have a poster of them in my office. I’ve seen all the specials on the cable TV channels chronicling their time here. But would this show be a reasonably true recreation that brings back that vibe, or would I be seeing some second rate impersonators limping their way through a show as some of the budget Elvis’ seem to do?

Thankfully, it was the former. While not the Copa Room (where the originals played often at The Sands), the Congo room at the Sahara was festively decorated and very comfortable. “Joey” (played by comedian Mark Cohen — legalities prevent the performers from using the full names of the people they impersonate in the show) came out and told us that it was a very special night: December 12, 1961 … which just happened to be “Frank’s” birthday. He warmed the crowd up with some truly funny comedy.

He then introduced “Frank,” played by famed Sinatra impressionist Steve Lippia who sung a collection of hits from the era including “Luck Be A Lady” while he worked the stage with a confident manner. His vocal comparison to Sinatra’s is uncanny, and the 20 piece orchestra backing all of the performers added to the realism of the period.

Rick Michel came out as “Dean,” in character with a huge martini glass. He was perhaps was the most dead-on in the looks department (although all had good resemblance to their original characters) and had an amazingly strong voice to boot. He ran through Dean Martin favorites such as Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes and Find Yourself Somebody To Love.

Doug Starks is “Sammy,” and I mean he IS Sammy. An actual friend of the late entertainer he pays tribute to, he had the style, vocal quality, moves, and inflections down pat. Sailing through songs like That Old Black Magic and What Kind of Fool Am I, he took liberty to sing Mr. Bojangles, noting that it wouldn’t be released until 1968 … but “You are here, I am here, so let’s do it”!

From there, the show was filled with the kind of fun and frolic that these performers made legendary. They joked, sang duets, made little jabs at each other, and mixed drinks on stage. Celebrities in the audience were introduced (this night they included Robin Leach and Nevada Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt). Although the original performers had a great camaraderie, even more credit to this group for being able to naturally recreate that night after night.

If you are old enough to remember and appreciate The Rat Pack, or were born a little after their Vegas heyday but are curious about what it must have been like and love that “old Vegas” vibe, this is a show well worth seeing.

The Rat Pack Is Back plays The Sahara hotel. Check times, costs, and availability at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=1

Unfortunately, with the volume of people Las Vegas hotels handle, sometimes one has a bad experience. If you don’t get satisfaction at the time, be sure to write the general manager of the hotel when you return home. If you are polite but firm and give solid detail, they will often send you freebies ranging from food to free nights on your next visit.

A couple of years ago, I gave the Stardust daily brunch buffet a nice review here, but they have since discontinued the daily buffet format and the quality has waned. Although are archives at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com and our new show reviews archive at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com can be a big help, note the date and remember that sometimes things change. Our weekly reviews here are always fresh!
