EDITOR NOTES: Where have we been? I blew off publishing last week to take care of pressing obligations in other areas, but (knock on wood) we are back to weekly starting this week! I hope everyone is surviving the heat around the US. It is too bad we can’t export our dry air to you.

A few new format changes: The hotel specials have been been expanded moved to the end of the newsletter. When warranted, I’ll have tidbits of interest to local’s in a new area called “Local Notes.” No more weather listings. We have a link instead so you can punch up the most up-to-date forecast before your visit.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

BELLAGIO #4 – The Bellagio hotel-casino has been ranked the fourth-best hotel in the world by readers of Travel & Leisure, a major travel magazine. The $1.6 billion Bellagio was surpassed only by the Four Seasons Resort Bali and Jimbara Bay, the Ritz-Carlton Chicago and the Ritz-Carlton Naples (Fla.) in this year’s rankings, set for release in this week’s issue. The rankings are derived from surveys sent in by the readers of the magazine, which has a circulation of more than 1 million. NORTH STRIP – now should be known as the fun end of The Strip. The Strat Tower features two thrill rides over 1000 feet above the earth as well as probably the most spectacular view in the city. The Sahara features Speed: The Ride, the NASCAR Cafe, and $1 blackjack all the time. Kitty corner from that is Bonanza Gift shop, billed as the world’s largest and a fun place to poke around for an hour. On the same corner is Holy Cow, Las Vegas’ first brewpub. RED DRAGON CASINO – Many in town over the past few months asked about the making over of one side and the facade of the Desert Inn. It was painted red and the marquee said “Red Dragon.” As reported here, this was for the Jackie Chan movie Rush Hour 2. DINING OUT – The economy’s unevenness has caused some restaurant companies to say diners have lost their taste for meals out. But in Las Vegas, many eateries say business now is as good as it’s ever been. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-29-Sun-2001/business/16574207.html

CANYON RANCH SPA – Today, practically all new upscale resorts include at least a small spa, says Walker, and many of the new spas are downright huge, from 10,000 to 100,000 square feet. In opening the spa, The Venetian, a 2-year-old posh hotel with more than 3,000 guest rooms, wasn’t really taking that big a risk. Like swimming pools in the ’50s, hot tubs and saunas in the ’70s, and golf courses in the ’80s, the spa has become the must-have accouterment of the luxury hotel. NORDSTROM – Nordstrom also announced yesterday that construction will begin this week on a store in Las Vegas, its first full-line store in Nevada. THEMED WEDDINGS – The owner of Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, 1205 Las Vegas Blvd. South, DeCar recently remodeled a portion of an old hotel into a themed bed and breakfast with 32 rooms, including a Gothic room complete with headstone headboards and a coffin bathtub; an intergalactic room with galaxy murals and a spaceship bed; and a Blue Hawaii room, modeled after the Elvis Presley movie of the same name. BINION’S POKER ROOM – New Binion’s Horseshoe poker room manager Tom McEvoy plans major changes for the casino’s card room and the World Series of Poker. He plans several big changes to the poker room, which has been hurt by competition for high-stakes players from Bellagio and The Mirage, and for lower-stakes players from locals casinos closer to the homes of Las Vegas residents. COFFEEMANIA – We have not had time to check out this new Internet Cafe yet, but it looks promising. The only negative for tourists is the location: halfway between The Sahara and The Stratosphere. The serve gourmet coffee drinks plus tea, smoothies, pastries and other food items from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. High speed Internet access is $6 per half-hour, and access is quick for those with a car (just use the Holy Cow parking garage right behind the place). JUBILEE TURNS 20 – Linda Green anchors her long legs under a piece of scenery and starts her nightly sit-ups. Torso rocking up, then back effortlessly, she strikes up a conversation. After 20 years and more than 12,000 performances as a principal dancer in “Jubilee!” she is a familiar part of the topless revue, nearly as much a fixture as the stage. FROZEN FURY 5 – pits the LA Kings against the San Jose Sharks in this NHL preseason matchup Saturday, Sept. 22 at the MGM Garden. Tickets range from $20 – $60 and available by calling (702) 474-4000. Infamous LA Kings hockey fan and syndicated radio talk show host Tom Leykis will be doing his show from the MGM the Friday before the game.

FEATURE STORIES: Steve Wyrick: World Class Magician

Up at the North end of The Strip in The Sahara hotel, sits a mysterious airplane hanger. Area 51? A deserted air strip? Close — it is the 900 seat showroom for Steve Wyrick: World Class Magician.

While diverse, many of the main illusions follow an aviation theme. The show prelude video shows Wyrick running late and taking a helicopter to the showroom, where he is “lowered through the ceiling” via helicopter to arrive just in time for the show. Another illusion involves him standing in and walking through a huge 747 turbine jet fan. Obviously, a real 747 get engine revved up would suck Wyrick and half the audience into it, but the engine was true to size and made for an enormous and compelling illusion.

The show is huge, not all of the illusions are dependent on gigantic props and staging. He brought a couple of audience members onstage, sat them at a table, and did the 654 club card trick, where despite shuffling and letting the spectators cut the deck, he presents card combinations (4 jacks, etc.) and lays them on the table while he tells the tale of a group of men at a nightclub. What made this work is a live camera operator onstage with the video displayed on a huge screen for the crowd to comfortably see.

However, the majority of the show relies on the huge, Broadway quality sets including one where Wyrick is on a “big city street” set, on a running Harley Davidson (you could smell the exhaust) only to be lifted in the air, vaporized, and appearing at the back of the theater with motorcycle in a flash.

The finale keeps with the aviation theme, as a full size twin engine airplane is made to vanish from the stage in a matter or seconds.

I was left with mixed feelings about the show. Part of that stems from the fact that attendance is on the sparse side. No fault of the show quality, but probably because The Sahara doesn’t have the foot traffic by the front door that other resorts do and 900 seats are hard to fill for any production show.

Having said that, he’s only charging about half of Lance Burton and 1/3 of Siegfried and Roy and you are getting a full scale Vegas magic show with the huge props, the attractive dancers / assistants — “the whole nine yards.” You get plenty of bang for the buck at $34.95 (plus tax). If you are a budget conscious traveler, or taking family and want to see a full Vegas magic show without going broke, this is the show. The upside of the light crowd counts is that you are probably going to get a pretty good seat, even if you are a “walk up ” (no reservations) customer before showtime.

The Regent Friday pool party is an overwhelming success. $5 admission includes a beer and a hot dog and the pool grounds are large and beautiful. Party starts at 6 PM but picks up around 8 PM. Bikini contest at 9 PM.

“Smooth Jazz” musician Rocky Gordon had a successful CD release party for his new Perfect World CD last Wednesday at Gordon Bierch. He and his talented band play a nice variety of enjoyable modern jazz. Audio samples and CD purchase info are available at http://www.rockygordon.com

Radio station V108 (107.9 FM) has launched a full advertising blitz to promote the new urban contemporary station. 97.5 FM KBJG just came on the air is the first hip-hop and rap station for the area. KBYE 105.7 FM also just came on the air. They are still testing, and playing middle-of-the-road top 40 from the past and present. Rumor has it that they will turn to smooth jazz when ready for official launch. KSFN 1140 AM continues with the Hot Talk format.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

SHADOW – The new lounge at Caesars Palace tries to capitalize on the new upscale lounge trend in town. The bartenders are unbelievably skilled a la Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail. They don’t just pour a drink. They flip, juggle, shake, behind the back, you name it. The lounge is gaining notoriety because behind the bar, topless female dancers apparently clad in only a bikini or thong bottom dance behind a translucent screen, backlit so that you can only see their shadow. Unfortunately, the lounge misses the mark with an atmosphere that is much too bright and airy. This may attract the regular Caesars patron, but no one is going to be leaving Venetian’s V-Bar in favor of Shadow.

FREE MARGARITA – at Casino Royale (between Harrah’s and The Venetian) to anyone showing out-of-state ID at the main bar. If you drive here or rent a car, also take advantage of their parking garage right behind the small casino. It is steps from The Strip and sits half empty even on weekends — truly a best kept secret!

FLOATING CRAPS GAME – Former Las Vegas News Bureau photographer Don English, shot a floating craps table game recently at the Stratosphere pool. It was a recreation of a photo from the 50’s. SHOWGIRLS – “Las Vegas Showgirls: Making It” begins a three-week shoot Wednesday, focusing on six “Jubilee!” dancers, four women and two men, on- and offstage. The six range in age from 19-year-old Laine, a college student who moonlights as a showgirl, to 31-year-old Tammi, who’s engaged to a divorced firefighter with two children. EXPENSIVE TASTE – So much for Las Vegas as a cheap place to get a meal: The 2001-2002 Zagat Survey of local restaurants reports the average cost of dinner here has risen to $32.42, including one drink, tax and tip. That’s up from $25.70 last year and $20.80 in 1997. Technically, the 2001 survey places Las Vegas eighth in the Zagat universe, behind Tokyo, London, Paris and four areas in and near New York City. SHOWS PRICES – Not only does it cost a few more bucks to eat, but ticket prices rise with each year. Ironically, the highest price shows are the toughest tickets in town to get. FOOTBALL – isn’t far off, and now is the time to scope out the weekends you might want to be in town to do some serious sports betting! Howard Schwartz of the Gambler’s Book Club has suggested a number of great football betting books at http://www.casinogaming.com/columnists/shelf/062701.html UNLV games will be on the board for the first time this year, which will make local games more interesting (with fans rooting in droves for them to run up the score, or fans staying at a game that is essentially over hoping to see if a team covers or not). Also, the Imperial Palace is already taking bets on a number of big college games slated for the fall. FEATURE STORIES: WB Stage 16 Restaurant

Warner Brothers may conjure up images of cartoon characters, but the studio has released some of the more noted movies of our time. In particular, Stage 16 on the Warners lot was home to the creation of popular motion pictures like Casablanca, Ocean’s 11, My Fair Lady, and the Batman films. These films and others are the basis for the theme of this upscale eatery in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian hotel.

However, let’s talk about the food first. Unlike most theme restaurants serving up overpriced truck stop fare, the quality and variety of Stage 16 is fantastic. Sure, you pay for it (and for the atmosphere we’ll discuss in a minute), but it’s a dining experience worth the time and money.

Fortunately, those of more moderate hunger (and budgets) aren’t left out. Sandwiches are served with Jalapeno Slaw and Vegetable Chips and include Honey Glazed Turkey and Borgonzola “Santa Barbara” ($11.75), Grilled Portabella and Buffalo Mozzarella Panni ($10.75), Stage 16 Burger ($9.25), Shrimp Caesar Wrap ($11.75), Lemon Pepper Swordfish Sandwich ($12.95), and Tuscan Herb Crusted Chicken Sandwich ($10.75). A variety of Brick Oven Flatbreads including Oak Roasted Chicken and Stuffed Lasagna Pizza run in the $11-13.00 range. Noodles selections include Angel Hair Pomodoro, Linguine Pronto, Vanilla Seared Shrimp and others ranging from $10.95 to $23.95.

Appetizers include Rock Shrimp and Corn Chowder ($6.95), Petaluna Escargot and Wild Mushrooms ($9.75), Avodacado and Brie Bruschetta ($10.75), Wok Fried Duck Spring Rolls ($9.95), Sesame Seared Tuna ($11.95) and Caviar (market price.) Salads are al la cart and include House ($6.95), Roasted Garlic and Herb Hearts of Palm ($8.75), Oriental Chicken Chop Salad ($10.75), Classic Caesar ($8.25), Mediterranean Salad ($12.95), and Candied Pecan, Apple and Watercress Salad ($9.25).

The dinner menu shines with standard dining selections like Prime Rib ($20.95 10 oz. and $32.95 for 14 oz.), Cracked Pepper Filet Mignon ($29.95), Herb and Garlic Crusted Lamb Chops ($28.95), Lemon Herb Barbecued Salmon ($21.95), Ancho Cinnamon Pork Tenderloin ($24.95), Cola Barbecued Half Chicken ($18.95), and Fish and Chips ($19.95). More artistic selections include Grilled Chicken and Apricot Kebobs ($16.95), Turkey and Shitake Mushroom Meatloaf ($15.75), Lobster and Wild Mushroom Strudel ($29.95), and Basalmic Wild Mushroom Studded New York Strip Loin ($28.95).

A children’s section of the menu includes younger diner favorites like Crispy Crunchy Chicken Strips, Sound Stage 16 Burger, Country Style Corn Dogs, Herb Crusted Lemon Sole, and even a full line of Beachnut Baby Products for $7.95 (per selection).

The atmosphere? Hard to put into words, but a key part of the meal. Diners are seated on one of four unique rooms, each themed to a certain film. “Gotham City” is the set that served as the background for the climatic face-off between Batman and The Joker complete with sound and lighting effects (noticeable but not obtrusive enough to undermine a nice dinner). The “We’re in the Money” room is from the film Gold Diggers of 1933 taking diners back to another era of film production. “Las Vegas 60’s Lounge” is straight from Ocean’s 11 and takes you back to the Rat Pack era. My favorite? “Rick’s American Cafe” interior from Casablanca. You truly feel that you walked onto the original movie set 55 years later.

I’ve enjoyed WB Stage 16 alone, with friends, and clients and have yet to have a bad meal or sample a dish that wasn’t up to par. And after dinner (or if you already dined somewhere else), Jacks Velvet Lounge upstairs in the restaurant is a must. It features both enclosed and outdoor areas and provides a front row view of The Strip overlooking The Mirage and the volcano in the distance as well as the canals along the entrance of the Venetian.

WB Stage 16 is upstairs in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, just at the top of the escalators which take you from the main casino floor to the shopping area. They are open for lunch and dinner every day. Reservations are suggested at (702) 414-1699 as the restaurant does occasionally play host to private parties and film screenings.

I have no inside info on this or I’d be down playing slots instead of running my little web “empire” here. I understand it was true at one time, but I’ve also heard that casinos have now played on that myth forever. I will say this: I’ve never seen a people winning on the machines close to the ladies room, where the men are killing time waiting for their significant other!

I would also avoid playing two machines at one time, as I’ve read much on how staggering loose and tight machines causes people to take from one and give to the other. The slots at the airport are tight simply because they aren’t trying to give enough back to encourage return business. You are stuck, you are only there because you have to be, and they know that.

I seldom cover anything away from The Strip or downtown because the vast majority of Vegas visitors never leave these tourist areas. However, I have talked to a number of people like yourself who visit often, have a car, and enjoy staying at one of the “local’s” casinos a few miles away from The Strip. Because these properties cater to locals who are very savvy, play regularly, and spread plenty of word-of-mouth among their friends, they have to offer looser slots, great service, and good food deals all the time. The only problem with The Strat is that location at the top end of The Strip. You do need to rent a car or relegate yourself to the Strip Trolley or city bus. However, it has great restaurants, good gaming, and I love that tower. I’m up there every couple of months just to enjoy the view. Plus, both American Superstars and Viva Las Vegas (both reviewed at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com ) offer a great value.

CULTURE – is coming to the neon desert a little at a time. On Sept. 15, New York’s Guggenheim Museum will unveil a new 63,000-square-foot, $20-million exhibition space at the Venetian Hotel. At the same time, the Venetian will add an additional 8,000 square feet of exhibition space to house masterworks from Russia’s State Hermitage Museum. Cirque du Soleil, the Montreal-based theater troupe, now resides here permanently in two specially designed $40-million-plus theaters. The avant-garde New York theater troupe “Blue Man Group” settled into a state-of-the-art theater in the basement of the Luxor Hotel. In January, the Smithsonian Institution, one the nation’s premier arbiters of high culture, put Las Vegas on its list of national cultural stops for art and architecture. FEATURE STORY: Skintight at Harrah’s

Skintight is 70 minutes of high gloss breasts and brawn, feathers and jiggle with a heavy Latin / Tribal musical influence. It is one of the new set of Las Vegas shows that doesn’t pretend to be anything but a show filled with fantasy to arouse and amuse.

The star of the show is Playboy Playmate October 1985 Cynthia Brimhall whose performance as emcee is warm and interesting enough, although she’s probably along for the ride for her marquee value more than any specific talent she lends to the show.

Skintight appears to be a reasonably blatant attempt to cross a “Vegas show” with one of the numerous strip clubs that dot the tourism area of town, and it succeeds. The Romanesque staging is interesting, providing a decent backdrop for a show that isn’t meant to require much thought.

One of the scenes actually involves bringing five men from the audience up onstage for simulated lap dances from the dancers, and one lucky attendee gets a personal dance from Miss Brimhall. While interesting, it stops short of being the bump and grind of a “gentleman’s club.”

The dancing is well choreographed and there is a fair amount of Vegas-style (after all, it is in Las Vegas) entertainment with a featured female singer (who keeps her clothes on) and segments featuring dance to songs like Ricky Martin’s “La Vida Loca” and such. The audience contained plenty of couples, and I imagine the fit male dancers (who at one point strip down to g-strings) were reasonable eye-candy for the ladies.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

SUPER BOWL PARTIES – The Super Bowl brings more testosterone to Las Vegas than any other weekend. Every bar, every lounge, every TV everywhere is tuned to the big game. Many of the hotels throw “all inclusive” parties where the price of admission gets you all you can eat and drink. The R-J has these listed at http://www.lasvegas.com/events/superbowl2001 If you are looking to go crazy betting the game, we suggest the Imperial Palace. They put up a pile of interesting and wacky side bets that must be seen to be believed.

HERE WE GO AGAIN – A group of investors has plans on the drawing board to build a 40 story megaresort across the Strip from Mandalay Bay. Virgin Atlantic’s Richard Branson is considering throwing his hat into the project, which is having some problems acquiring the remaining few parcels needed to pull off the project. ELVIS – would have turned 66 a few days ago, and AP just did an article on The King’s continuing popularity here in Las Vegas at http://www.journalstar.com/nation?story_id=3033&date=20010108&past=

TAKE THE TRAIN? – A couple of years ago, Amtrak abandoned service to Las Vegas, which (as part of a longer route) only operated three times a week with a 7.5 hour ride between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. However, they have been hard at work to restart daily LA – Vegas service using faster equipment and special stretches of double track allowing the fast passenger trains to pass slower freight service. The money for the new trains and track improvements are available, and the new trains are reported to be plush and have the latest entertainment and amenities.

The delay? The planned 22 mile long passing siding is in the Mojave National Preserve, home to a tortoise that has been listed as a “threatened” species. Although adding another set of rails beside a present rail line would seem to have minimal additional impact, government environmental red tape threatens to delay the project for many months. WE’RE #1 – Besides having the biggest fireworks display for New Year’s Eve, we are #1 in another category. It came as little surprise that Nevada was the fastest growing state in the nation for the past decade. Our growth of 66% far outpaced neighbors Arizona (#2 with 40%) and Utah (#4 with 29%). FEATURE STORY: 01.01.01

The New Year came in with a big bang, literally. A fireworks show called the “Big Bang” simultaneously went off from the roofs of 14 casinos up and down The Strip. Each of the hotels looked like a Roman candle going off with sparks flying everywhere. This was accompanied by loud and constant “concussion bomb” explosions that literally rocked The Strip.

At a time when much of the US was unfortunately freezing, buried in snow, and many without power, New Year’s Eve dawned beautiful and sunny. Temperatures were in the mid-60’s during the day and remained in the mid-40’s leading up to midnight. The crowds were unprecedented, with estimates ranging from 300-350,000, and Metro (Police) reporting by 10 PM that the entire length of the Strip was completely closed to traffic.

There was no shortage of news coverage, both locally and around the world on networks like CNN. We had our brand new Sony Mavica FD-85 digital camera out on The Strip. (My thanks to those readers who recommended it to me a few months ago when I asked for info on a digital that handles low light well.) Despite the throngs of people and general merriment, we managed to get 30 great photos of the fireworks, the crowds, the crazies, the ladies and The Strip on this unique evening. The only sour note? An unnamed hotel executive was quoted lamenting the money spent on a celebration which drew heavily on the 20-something crowd. Generally speaking, casinos prefer to fill the town with a crowd that is a little more established and mature (read: has more disposable income). This is probably one of the same morons who a few years ago questioned the need for hotels to have websites or facilitate booking rooms online. (Las Vegas has always been way behind the online curve, and it didn’t dawn on these guys that parts of the rest of the world are using the internet to find information and buy things 4-5 years ago.)

Note to casino executives: Credit card companies advertise all over college campuses, trying to get their cards into the hands of those with no money. Why? Because someday those students will be making the big bucks, and still using that card. Vegas “ain’t no different.” These 20-somethings had a great time, went home and each told 20 friends how cool Vegas is, and will be back year after year with more and more money to enjoy themselves with. (End of rant.)

If you had to drive to The Strip (from an off Strip hotel or home), what time did you go and where did you park? As noted last newsletter, I suggested people get down there before 6 PM as the side streets fill up and hotels start to only allow guests to park in the garages.

Blue Man is on the short list. I have been meaning to review it for quite some time as its popularity is soaring. I have their CD and have been addicted to the unique pulsing rhythmical music. You hit the nail on the head about the kids. I was SHOCKED at how many strollers and mothers holding babies I saw this New Year’s Eve. These people paid a premium for rooms, airfare (or fought traffic heavy traffic flowing in for the weekend), and were exposing their kids to noisy fireworks and 1/3 million tipsy revealers. My advice to parents? Do the family vacation with Walt Disney. Come to Vegas sans the kids for fun and romance.

They want to waste a couple of hours of your valuable time to pitch you on a time-share. When you add up what your time is worth here (airfare, hotel, etc.) you are better off avoiding the hassle. They best way to avoid them is to tell them you are leaving tonight, or split up with your significant other until you get past them (they generally don’t pitch single people).

The signs that have been refurbished and are operating are at the East end of the Fremont St. Experience downtown (by Race Rock, etc.) There is a yard in another part of town where a bunch are stored awaiting restoration (or just collecting dust — nothing rusts in the desert), but to my knowledge it is not open to the public.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON – has inked a deal with slot maker IGT to put the infamous motorcycle manufacturer’s logo on a line of slot machines. These machines will also feature motorcycle engine noises, which has to be an improvement to the “Wheel of Fortune” sound you hear droning through a casino every 30 seconds. WWF HOTEL – Every couple of weeks, someone writes and asks me about the state of the (former) Debbie Reynolds Hotel on Convention Center drive. The World Wrestling Federation bought the property to turn it into a themed resort with live TV production from the property. However, with their involvement in the XFL and their concerns about the location, they sold it (at a profit, mind you — about an 8% return on their investment). FEATURE STORY: New Year’s Eve Info and Webcams

NEW YEAR’S EVE – is just about here and things are shaping up nicely. The resorts skipped on the high priced entertainment, finally figuring out that people come to Las Vegas for New Year’s Eve to PARTY. Last year, the Visitors Authority spent their budget on advertising. This year, they are blowing it on the fireworks show. If you are within driving distance of Las Vegas, you can still nail sub-$100 a night rooms around town at decent hotel and motels. Check http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm for rates.

If you don’t mind the crowds and partiers, The Strip is the only place to be for this one-of-a-kind celebration. Forget New York City and Times Square, where reports note that you have to show up at dawn on the 31’st to nail a good spot and public drinking is frowned on. (BTW, for any math buffs, do us a favor: take the number of people reported to attend the Times Square ball drop and divide it by the number of blocks of roads barricaded off for these people. With apologies to our friends in the Big Apple, our best magicians couldn’t squeeze the reported number of people into the reported area).

If it sounds like we have a rivalry with Times Square, you are close. We were encroaching on their claim to fame as the most popular U.S. New Year’s Eve destination until last year when the Visitors Authority and hotels sat on their thumbs and did … nothing … for New Years (sans Paris Las Vegas which dropped confetti off their Eiffel Tower). We WILL eventually claim the mantle, but now we get to play catch-up. Oh, and we are!

We are going to have $500,000 worth of fireworks going off over a 10 minute period starting at midnight and stretching almost 4 miles, so anywhere between Mandalay Bay and The Stratosphere is going to be hot. If you love crowds, get towards the center Strip (Flamingo). Need some air? Head away from that area until the crowds thin out (generally south of Tropicana and north of Sands / Spring Mountain [Treasure Island]). Just don’t bring glass containers or get out of line, and you can drink what you want. In fact, vendors were selling beer on the street last year. Oh, and restrooms (porta-potties): they are usually up by Treasure Island and down near Holiday Inn Boardwalk.

If you are staying elsewhere, and need to drive down to the Strip, it is wise to get parked by about 6 PM (either in a hotel garage or side street) BUT hey, it’s the Strip! I can think of few better places to spend a few hours of growing anticipation.

The fireworks show will be choreographed and synchronized to music simulcast by KLUC-FM 98.5 and KMXB-FM 94.1 (either one — bring your Walkman). Unfortunately, neither of those stations broadcast over the internet, but if you can’t make it here, you won’t be entirely left out in the cold. Las Vegas and The Strip have a record number of live webcams this year, and one is even a streaming cam! We’ve got them all linked at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-webcams.htm My advice? Try the first one listed (SmartConnect.Net — Flamingo and The Strip streaming). It is very new and few know about it, so it is likely to have the fastest response.

Crowds really start to pick up around 9 PM and center and south parts of The Strip are usually completely closed to traffic by 10 PM with the rest of it to follow quickly. By 11 PM (Pacific Time) you should be able to view the crowds and throngs of people. It is quite a site!

Even though I am a veteran of many of these Strip celebrations, I’m getting excited just thinking about it. I’m enjoying Christmas with my family in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon but my Alaska Airlines ticket says PDX – LAS, Dec. 30, 2000. I wouldn’t miss this one for the world and hope you can enjoy it either in person or online. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2001!

I enjoy meeting other Las Vegas “fanatics” but unfortunately, my schedule living and working in Las Vegas is usually as rigid as a visitors is fluid. Because the odds are that a number of subscribers are in town at any given time, I am giving thought to experimenting with “meet and greets” starting later this year. Nothing formal or time consuming — just times and dates in a central, casual location (probably a casino lounge on the Strip) where readers who are in town can stop by, say hello, and compare real time notes with like minded people. FEATURE STORY: Hoover Dam

hoover-dam.jpg (17845 bytes) Hoover Dam has often been referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. If you have flown in from the east or the south, you might have seen it from the air, but nothing can compare to seeing it up close and in person.

Built between 1931 – 1935 to harness the flow of the Colorado River, Hoover Dam is primarily responsible for storing the water used by people and agriculture in the desert southwest including Arizona, California, and Nevada. California is entitled to 4,400,000 acre-feet, Arizona 2,800,000 acre-feet, and Nevada, 300,000 acre-feet a year from the river, and the dam stores it for constant release regardless of season. Sitting only 30 miles from the Strip, it is also a top tourist attraction for Las Vegas visitors.

Visiting the dam is a unique experience! With US 93 running across it, you are completely free to roam on the top of the dam. The view over the edge 550+ feet in the air and down Black Canyon on the Colorado River is worth the trip all by itself. For a $4 admission, the visitor’s center contains quite a bit of historical and interesting photos and exhibits. There is also a self-guided tour which you can print out online at http://www.hooverdam.com/service/Sgt2.pdf

However, the real fun are the two tours offered. The shorter tour is fine for most. Taking 30 minutes, you go down into the dam and view the generators and are taken at to the base of the dam, where you can peer down the canyon and up toward the top of the towering structure. However, if you have a sense of adventure or are more interested in the technical inner workings, the one hour Hard Hat tours is a must.

You descend into the side of the dam in an elevator cut through the volcanic rock, and after a short walk through a pure rock tunnel, emerge in the generator room. Unlike the short tour, you are taken via another elevator to the floor of the generating area where you stand next to the huge encased turbines.

You also are taken down below the generating area where you stand just above one of the pipes feeding water through the giant electrical turbines, and can actually see the shaft of the turbine rotating. From there it is outside, for the same magnificent view of the canyon and up at the dam that you enjoy with the shorter tour. You are also taken into tunnels where you can see the huge pipes that were buried in the walls of the canyon.

A real highlight of this trip is touring the inside of the dam itself, which is lined with two miles of tunnels that serve both for drainage (all dams have a minor amount of seepage inside) and inspection. When looking down over the edge of the dam (and especially looking up from the bottom), you might notice a few vents on the side of the dam. Guess what — on the hard hat tour you can actually walk to the vent and peer out at the canyon from the inner center of the dam. Truly amazing.

The tours is not for the claustrophobic, especially the hard hat tour where you take 10 separate elevator rides with 20 people to each elevator car, and also walk the interior tunnels of the dam which are around 5 feet wide and 7 feet tall.

The visitor center is open from 8:00 AM to 5:45 PM. Tours start at 8:30 AM and run the remainder of the day. Parking on the Nevada side (in the garage) is $3.00. Parking on the Arizona side is free. The Traditional tour is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $2 for kids 7 – 16. The Hard Hat tour is $25 and includes a hard hat which you get to keep.

For those without transportation, we offer Hoover Dam tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/hoover-dam-tours.htm If you have drove to town or are renting a car, the dam is easy to find. Head south on The Strip to I-215. Go east on I-215 for about 10 miles until the freeway ends at a set of stoplights. Continue straight about 1/2 mile (I-215 turns into Lake Mead Dr.) to the junction with US 93/95 and head south. Stay on US 93 for the next 20 miles or so (through and past Boulder City). US 93 crosses the dam so once on US 93, you can’t get lost.

An alternate, more scenic route is to skip turning off to US 93/95 and stay on Lake Mead drive. Just stay on it (there will only be one fork in the road: veer right) — it is named Lake Mead Drive for a reason! This route is about 10 miles longer but skirts the lake with some great views before returning to US 93 just a couple miles from the dam. There is a toll station collecting $5 per car on this route.

IMPORTANT: Hoover Dam is a very popular attraction and US 93 also carries thousands of cars each day as the main road southeast out of Las Vegas. Plus, the dam is at a lower elevation than Las Vegas, resulting in temperatures that can be 10 degrees hotter than in the city. This can be brutal late spring to early fall. Also, the tours are usually the least crowded and most available early in the day. Hit the road early. Grab a cheap buffet breakfast at the Railroad Pass Casino (on your left just after crossing the railroad tracks as you head out of town on US 93/95) and get there early to beat the crowds and the heat.

We are glad you had a great time! Unfortunately, it is feast or famine with the taxi drivers. The cab companies, like many other businesses, are having trouble finding and keeping good help. If you are at all geographically inclined, it never hurts to buy a Las Vegas city map so you can have a clue whether they are taking you the best route. If you ever have a dispute or feel that you got ripped off by a cab driver, get the name of the company and the cab number from the side of the cab and call the Taxicab Authority at (702) 486-6532

FEATURE STORY: American Superstars

american-superstars-01.jpg (29008 bytes) Long time readers know that I enjoy hitting similar shows or restaurants in a short amount of time. I’m still on a diet from visiting three of the best steakhouses in town in three straight weeks (Harrah’s Range, Binion’s Ranch, and Delmonico in The Venetian). Having lived here eight years but never checking out any of the celebrity impersonator shows, I thought it would be fun to see Legends In Concert (reviewed last week) and American Superstars pretty much back-to-back.

American Superstars features tributes to Madonna, Michael Jackson, Charlie Daniels, Elvis Presley and Gloria Estefan (with a “limited engagement” Ricky Martin at time of review). The show is a hybrid: One part celebrity recreation, one part 80’s rock concert, and one part Vegas show.

Elvis hit the stage first, with over-the-top renditions of classics like “Viva Las Vegas,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” and “Jailhouse Rock.” Done with elaborate lighting, sexy female dancers, and a live video shot of the fanfare shown on sidestage screens (hallmarks of every act), he set the stage for an energy level that seldom let up.

Gloria Estefan put on a passable set of the singer’s hits, although getting by more on staging and movements than being a complete look-alike as was the case with most of the performers. However, with any “tribute” show, one must understand you are attending for the music and emotions recreated in a live setting.

american-superstars-02.jpg (19459 bytes) I’m not a traditional country fan, but Charlie Daniels put on a rousing rendition of “Devil Went Down to Georgia” and patriotic favorite “God Bless the USA” as well as displaying some mind-bending fiddle work.

Madonna put on a nice set of hits from across her entire career, and (understandably) had great choreography with the dancers as well as displaying both the 80’s and 90’s Madonna look. Ricky Martin was next. Even though he was getting by more on looks and attire than singing ability, he seemed to be a hit with the ladies. Michael Jackson capped the show with a drop-dead rendition of his greatest hits, a look that could be mistaken for the real thing, and dancing moves that had to be seen to be believed.

American Superstars features Darren Lee as Elvis, Sandy Taggart as Gloria Estefan, Coty Alexander as Madonna, Damian Brantley as Michael Jackson and Johnny Potash as Charlie Daniels and also had an energetic 4 piece live band. One nice feature is that all of the performers as well as the dancers (in full Vegas showgirl costume) appeared in the lobby after the show to meet and greet and pose for photos with attendees.

Tickets for American Superstars at The Stratosphere are $26.95 plus tax for adults and $21.95 plus tax for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 21 must be accompanied with an adult, but with the exception of bare buns on the dancers during a couple of numbers, there is nothing remotely adult in the content.

FEATURE STORY: Race Rock Supercharged Restaurant

race-rock-01.jpg (35087 bytes) If you are a fan of motor sports, you have a “home away from home” in Las Vegas. Race Rock is 30,000 sq. ft. of every kind of racing machine, photos, outfits, and memorabilia there is. NASCAR, Indy Car, drag racing, motorcycle racing — you name it, they have it! NASCAR cars along the walls, jet boats hanging from the ceiling, and drag cars standing upright are just a few of the thousands of artifact that will surround you as you dine while various racing videos play on TV monitors throughout the building.

Usually, theme restaurants are high on flash, high on prices, and low on food quality and service. If you are looking for “Vegas Deals” like $5.99 prime rib, keep walking because this isn’t a cut-rate joint. You can view the menu and prices online at http://www.racerock.com/racerock/themenu.html But, the service and presentation as well as the food quality justified prices that would be considered normal in any other part of the country.

I started with the fresh garden salad ($4.95), which was my only complaint. The greens weren’t shredded very well (I was cutting the salad with a knife) and the tomatoes and carrots looked like they were added as an afterthought. Fresh, but not a salad worthy of the a la carte price.

The main course, however, did help make up for it. “The King” (billed as racing legend and part-owner “King” Richard Petty’s favorite) was a healthy sized char-grilled sirloin steak smothered in mushroom sauce and sweet Burgundy onions. It came with “crashed” (mashed) garlic potatoes and fresh veggies. Forget needing a salad — this big plate was full of good tasting food, justifying the $17.95 (the most expensive thing on the menu).

race-rock-02.jpg (21588 bytes) For those just interested in a little “nitro,” guest are welcomed to enjoy the surroundings at either of two bars. Don’t be shy about heading upstairs where the bar area features two-story windows and a variety of racing arcade games. Specialty drinks are available in souvenir containers, and I mean containers. Racing themed containers like fuel cans!

The verdict? Not a Vegas “must-see,” but certainly a fun place to eat downtown for the general public. However, if you are into motorized racing of any kind, you’ll love the place. In fact, they probably have more NASCAR related displays alone than the actual NASCAR Cafe (reviewed https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-03-15.htm ) at The Sahara does.

We agree. Circus Circus buffet is consistently one of the 5 worst buffets in town. It may be on par with many of the chain buffets around the nation, but you are in Las Vegas. Expect more!

Technically speaking, ticket sales were lousy. It is a moot point as the entire C2K showroom is temporarily closed because of legal wrangling. That includes the nightclub and Melinda Magic Show. My guess is that they will get it open reasonably soon. Too much lost revenue every day it stays closed.

Every major sportsbook has enough TV’s to show just about every halfway important game on at any given time. If your game is not the most important (general interest) game at the moment, you might have to watch it without sound (which is reserved for the biggest game). You didn’t mention college or pro, but the Imperial Palace shows every single pro football game on Sundays in their showroom.

Some of the nicer sportsbooks include Bellagio and Las Vegas Hilton. If you are interested in a lesser known college game, it never hurts to ask if they will show it. Sometimes they have way more TV’s than they need tuned to one game, but it depends on how busy they are and their satellite limitations.

PLASTIC SURGERY – is a big topic here in Las Vegas, where many jobs depend on looks and we run around in light clothing most of the year. I have heard firsthand that a local casino chain even pays for part of the cost of breast implants for their cocktail waitresses. Las Vegas is second only to D.C. in the ratio of plastic surgeons to population, but surprisingly, more and more people are visiting here to obtain and recover from plastic surgery. “One stop” centers where you can get everything from liposuction to teeth whitening are springing up. HIGH ROLLER AREAS – Few know this, but Nevada law prohibits gaming from taking place in private hotel areas that are not available to the public. UNION PACIFIC’S CHALLENGER – steam locomotive is scheduled to steam through town in a couple of weeks. It will arrive here the evening of Aug. 21, sit here Aug. 22, and leave the morning of Aug. 23. I wasn’t able to get through to the railroad, so if you know where they are planning to park it here, let me know (I’ll keep trying). It leaves Las Vegas at approx. 8 AM on Aug. 23.

I’ll be up the tracks watching it. My advice? Head north out of town on I-15 to exit 58 (the old Las Vegas – Utah highway). Turn left under the freeway and under the railroad bridge. Drive about one mile until you round the bend and end up parallel with the tracks. You can either scope out a good viewing point, or drive along with the train. In 4 more miles, you come to another freeway interchange. If you want to keep pacing the train, get back on the freeway northbound with runs parallel to the tracks for most of the next 25 miles.

DESERT INN NAME CHANGE – Steve Wynn is doing away with another piece of Las Vegas history, not just figuratively, but literally. Unlike the Aladdin which is opening back under it’s previous name, the Desert Inn will get a new name (not yet decided). As noted, we take the week off next week, ramping up for our Aladdin Grand Opening issue in 2 weeks! We are going all out, not just with a full story on this new property, but will have plenty of companion photos online for you to enjoy. We are going opening night Aug. 17 (scheduled 7:00 PM to the public) and then going back the following Monday to see how things are once the madhouse of the initial weekend is done.

Casinos are always changing their mix of machines, and often it’s the 9/6 machines (those are the ones that are 99.5% payback with proper play) that go first. (I don’t want to single one out, because they are all good sites with good people running them.)

Interesting comments. A couple of years ago a CA attorney sued The Rio because (as you noted) the rooms were mostly one big room, not anything resembling a true suite. I don’t recall hearing the outcome.

A couple of weeks ago, we noted that the quality had improved lately, but you highlight an interesting point: know your source. Don’t get me wrong — cabbies work hard, many working 12 hour days 5-6 days a week. BUT, if you fought traffic for 60 hours a week on the strip, what would you do when you got off work? That’s right — get as far away from it as possible, not hanging out walking around and checking everything out objectively.

Believe it or not, most locals (including cabbies) suggest something as “the best” because they see that commercial on TV until it’s pounded into their head. Obviously, we hope that you make our newsletter and the archives a key part of your research. Both are in the suburbs, but not a bad time to remind everyone that Southern Nevada has a number of pretty fine microbrews on or new the tourist areas. This is the third and final installment in a three week series on some of the more notable steakhouses in town. I’ll have a quick comparison at the end.FEATURE STORY: Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonico

“Bam, Bam, Bam” — If you don’t know who Emeril is, just talk to someone who is into cooking or enjoys the Food TV cable channel. He’s taken “celebrity chef” to a new level with his “macho” cooking style with his signature “Bam” and “Let’s kick it up a notch” verbal stylings.

He is also one of the cooks credited with bringing truly fine dining to Las Vegas. And, fine it is. Rich modern decor, extensive wine availability, servers who call you by name — Las Vegas has come a long way since the days of the $2.99 buffets.

As with many fine restaurants, much is a la cart. Various servings of vegetables and potatoes run from $6 – $7.50. Soups and salads start at $6.50 for the New Orleans Gumbo of the day. Besides your typical selections such as French Onion Soup ($6.50) Caesar Salad (for two, $20.00), Sliced Tomato Salad ($12.00) and Composed Anti-Pasta Salad (market price), more unique items like Organic Baby Greens ($8.50), Baby Arugula, Cheddar Cheese and Apples ($9.00), Creative Soup of the Day (market price) and Wilted Spinach and Fried Mozzarella ($13.00) are available.

Filet Mignon, N.Y. Strip Steak, Ribeye, and Bone In Rib Steak run $28.00 – 36.00. My N.Y. steak was a healthy cut cooked to unbelievable perfection. As expected at this level, the presentation and the service were second to none.

House specialties (most of which include appropriate side dishes) are as follows: Chateaubriand (for two, $65), Charred Dry Aged Beef Sirloin ($30.00), Roasted Double Cut Pork Chop ($26.00), Grilled Creole Marinated Rack of Lamb ($36.00), Pan Roasted Creole Chicken Cordon Blue ($25.00), Maine Lobster (fresh from their tanks, market price), Creative Fish of the Day (Market Price), Saute of Gulf Shrimp and Fresh Pasta ($28.00), Grilled Sweet Barbecued Atlantic Salmon ($27.00), Seared Beef, House Cured Bacon and Maytag White Cheddar En Croute ($28.00), and New Orleans Veal Piccata ($28.00).

This popular restaurant in The Venetian seems to have no slow period. Reservations are a must at (702) 414-3737. They are open daily for lunch from 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM and open for dinner from 5:30 – 10:30 PM (11:00 PM on weekends). The lunch menu varies from dinner and is just slightly less expensive. The full menu is available at the bar, but are you crazy? Save eating at a bar for some corner joint in your city. Enjoy the dining room for a taste of the exquisite food, service and surroundings.

THE VERDICT: In the past three weeks, I have visited Harrah’s Range Steakhouse (reviewed https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-06-07.htm ), Binion’s Ranch Steakhouse (reviewed https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-06-14.htm ), and Delmonico.

If I had to pick a clear winner, it would be Delmonico. One of the very best meals I have ever been served in my life, but with a price to match. If you are on an average budget, save this one for truly special occasions. If you have no intention of heading downtown, or want the most plush and intimate surroundings, Harrah’s is your stop and probably the best for a romantic dinner and leisurely drinks. Binion’s is a little more down-home — still nice but not as pretentious as the others, and it’s top-floor view of the entire Strip and the Las Vegas Valley makes it a relaxing spot to savor great food.
