Hello From Las Vegas! – March is college basketball month here in Las Vegas. We’re the home to four (count them, four) college basketball tournaments: Pac-12 (Go Oregon Ducks), Mountain West (Go UNLV Rebels), West Coast Conference (the one with Gonzaga and BYU in it), and the Western Athletic Conference (teams most of you have not heard of).
Then, we roll right into March Madness, the craziest four days of college basketball of the year.
We’re keeping a close eye on the pending Supreme Court decision on whether sports betting will be allowed on a state-by-state basis. Right now, Nevada is the only state with wide-open sports betting. I’m torn on this. Obviously, as someone who promotes tourism here, I like the thought that we have a corner on the market. However, I’m a state’s rights guy as long as one state does not infringe upon another.
If available, imagine it will be more quickly legalized in states with strong casino gaming presence. New Jersey is at the forefront of the fight. Sports betting is taxed very low here in Nevada, which allows the casinos to offer you decent odds on your bets. If other states legalize it with an eye on tax revenue, you’ll be able to bet. However, you won’t be getting Nevada odds.
We’ll certainly lose some east coast sports betters to Atlantic City. However, the atmosphere of being in Las Vegas for March Madness, with all Las Vegas has to offer (and a chance for many to escape winter weather for our spring-like temps), I doubt we’ll see much fall-off.
The Gambling Numbers Are In, What They Mean To YOU – Each year, the State of Nevada tallys and releases numbers on what areas have the loosest and tightest slots. As gaming taxes have to be paid to the state, they know how much the machines took in, and how much they paid out.
I’m going to devote my column this week (and next) to going over where the best odds are, where you should (or should not) be gambling, and which players clubs you should (or should not) be considering. We’re going to go far beyond the obvious. Almost everyone knows that if you get to the locals casinos, you’ll find lower limits and looser slots (not to mention cheaper food and drink).
However, for some of you, downtown is as far as you go. If so, what are your better places to play? And, what about those of you who never leave The Strip? Where can you get a good gamble, and where should you avoid? Let’s get started!

Giada De Laurentiis is establishing serious roots in Las Vegas. Pronto by Giada, officially set to open on February 5 at Caesars Palace, will join Giada at the Cromwell as the celebrity chef’s second restaurant in the city.
The Las Vegas City Council voted unanimously today to seek a grant of up to $9.5 million from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to help update the downtown Fremont Street Experience video canopy. The update would allow the attraction to run around-the-clock, instead of just at night.
Forbes Travel Guide has unveiled its annual star ratings, once again naming The Laurel Collection by Caesars Palace and The Cromwell among its prestigious list. An iconic resort at the center of the famed Las Vegas Strip, Caesars Palace received Four Stars. Additionally, The Cromwell, the only standalone boutique hotel on the Strip, earned a Recommended Award.

How safe is Las Vegas water? It certainly doesn’t taste good. What is in it?
Craig Bunnett
Ted Responds:
It is HARD water. It has tons of minerals in it. The white ring around Lake Mead wasn’t painted there. That is from the minerals in the water that stuck to the canyon walls as the water level has fallen. While our water originates as snow in the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming, it takes a journey of many hundreds of miles down the Colorado River (and through the Grand Canyon), before we pump it out of Lake Mead. Picking up plenty of minerals along the way from our western rocky lands.

Hello From Las Vegas! – Where we’re finally starting to pull out of what was a very windy, cold, not-so-pleasant month of February. Except for this weekend, I’m happy to report that the first couple weeks of March are looking pretty good! Highs in the 60’s with only modest desert breezes and we’re saying goodbye to overnight lows in the 30’s.
The Hits Keep On Coming – MGM Resorts has decided to raise resort fees at many of their properties this week. In a world where resort fees (plus the taxes on them) are pushing $40, the properties are playing a cute shell game here. For those who get comped rooms (but not resort fee comps), it isn’t as much of a comp.
You are not only giving them your money in the casino, but you are essentially “paying” for the room. To those at higher levels of play who get room, resort fee, and parking comped: Just a few years ago, there was either none (or a very, very modest) resort fee and parking was free. So, they are giving you some “comped” stuff that didn’t used to cost anything. Pretty shifty!
The backlash is starting to boil over. I recently had an op-ed published in the Review-Journal (Nevada’s largest newspaper):
COMMENTARY: Some warning signs in Las Vegas tourism numbers
A couple days later, gaming business writer Rick Velotta cited my thoughts, and piled on with his own concerns:
Parking, resort fees could put damper on Las Vegas Strip boom
We’re going to make some noise, and we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, we’re helping members find value and savings in the “new” Las Vegas. You just have to know where to look!
More Good News For You – In my members-only audio column from last week, I noted that 15,000 rooms are coming online in about 3 years. Then, I backed that number off to 12,000 as I couldn’t remember one of the properties. The number is indeed around 15,000. Between Resorts World (former Stardust), Wynn Paradise Park, Wynn West, Fontainebleau, and the (yet to be named) former Las Vegas Club, we’ll see a 10% increase in available rooms.

A warm desert night spent watching the silhouette of a crowd gathered to take in the dancing Bellagio Fountains creates one of the most authentic moments in Las Vegas. I’m a blackjack novice. Do you have any advice to have a better chance at winning?
Charlie Casper
Ted Responds:
When I moved here in the 90’s, I counted cards, and did so successfully. However, that is TONS of practice and work. And, many modern rules have made it difficult to suceed at it these days.
For the novice or casual player, the answers are pretty simple:
1. Only play 3-2 payout of blackjack. You are getting ripped off if a blackjack pays 6-5. If the table doesn’t say what the payout is, you can ask the dealer.
Play downtown on Fremont Street. You’ll find more 3-2 payout blackjack, and lower limits perfect for learning, or just having fun.
2. Try not to play against a continuous shuffle machine. The game goes faster, so you lose faster. Plus, there is some evidence that the cards seem to come out in the house’s favor more often because of the way the machine shuffles and clumps them.

Lucky Penny is not your father’s coffee shop. The cafe, which opened this summer at the Palms, has all of the traditions of the Las Vegas coffee shop. It’s open 24/7, has a breakfast menu that’s available all day and some Asian items to fill the role of the Chinese restaurant de rigeur in casinos. But the creativity and execution of the food put it squarely in the modern era.
We’ve all been there. Hours, maybe even a full day, left on a Vegas trip that hasn’t quite gone to plan. The gambling budget is gone. An extra ATM stop has somehow disappeared. Suddenly, you are left with time to kill, a shaken psyche, and precious little money to spend. Something free is ideal.
Two Station Casinos properties reported slot jackpots on consecutive days in January, according to a statement from Station Casinos. Green Valley Ranch Resort guest Wade Williams won $440,754 playing a quarter denomination IGT Wheel of Fortune Slot machine with a $1.25 bet just after noon on Jan. 12. Williams was visiting from Texas when he hit the jackpot.

Hello from England!
Having spent many holidays in Vegas while our kids were small, we are returning this August for several family celebrations. Our youngest is now 21 and can explore Vegas without restriction! His older brother, 23, wants to treat him to a Grand Canyon trip and wonders which will be the best. Is it the West Rim or South Rim experience? We’re around for 12 days so they can spare an entire day but should they opt for helicopter or plane?
Grateful for your views.
Pauline
Ted Responds:
First of all, congrats to your youngest, who can now really enjoy all Las Vegas has to offer.
This is a fantastic question, as people don’t realize that there are “two” Grand Canyons (two different locations you can visit) and three ways to get over there.
As you noted, the Grand Canyon has a West Rim and a South Rim (It has a North Rim as well, but you have to drive up into Utah to get there, and is a moot point for the sake of this discussion). And, of course, you can take a flight into the canyon which doesn’t land at either rim.
– If you are doing a flight-only option, I’d suggest a helicopter over a sight-seeing plane. Although most of the sight-seeing planes have big windows, the view is simply more intimate in a helicopter. You fly down into the canyon. And, the stadium-style (tiered) seating on most helicopter tours assures everyone a panoramic view out of the front. In addition, you can choose a tour that actually lands you at the bottom of the canyon!
Hope this helps!
The Florida Panthers have a banner extolling the accomplishment of having a record 33 wins by an NHL expansion franchise. That banner was rendered irrelevant thanks to the Golden Knights, who made hockey history Thursday with their 34th win as David Perron’s goal with 1:03 left in overtime beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 at Bell MTS Place.
