LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

THE LION HABITAT – is now open at the MGM. This free exhibit lets you walk with the lions just inches from you on all sides (through glass, of course). The early reports have this as a “must see” and we will provide a detailed review in a few weeks.

VEGAS FOR KIDS – If you are bringing your kids to Las Vegas, “101 Things for Kids in Las Vegas” by Carol Stout is a must have. Instead of dragging them through the hot sun or locking them in the room while you gamble (both of which we speak out strongly against), make the trip fun for them. You can enjoy a family vacation here if you treat is as such, and not a gaming trip. This excellent book is available online from Amazon.Com at
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1886161208/invegascom

TYSON TO FIGHT AGAIN – If he can stay out of the slammer that long, Mike Tyson returns to the MGM on October 2 to fight a yet-as-unnamed opponent. So, if your vacation falls around that time and you were thinking about a trip here, get over to http://www.accessvegas.com and book now before the rooms get jacked up. Fight weekends are always wild even if you don’t actually attend the fight!

WINNER! – Beth Nicholson of Campbell, CA is the winner of the Pink Taco Sampler plate from the new restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

Hello from a rainy Las Vegas! We salute those of you on the east coast, where you have been working very hard to beat our high temperatures the past few days (and you have when factoring in the heat index). We truly wish a cooling trend on you. When you need the dry heat, you know where to come.

FREE CIGARS AND FOOD – The Havana Cigar Co. celebrates the grand opening of it’s store in the Tropicana Hotel on Saturday July 10, 1999 from 5-7:00 PM. Complimentary hors d’ oeuvres, beverages, and cigars will be available. This event is open to the public!

NBA AND NHL IN LAS VEGAS? – Ha, ha, ha … Mirage Resorts CEO Steve Wynn wants to buy a team and bring it to town to. That is, provided that the taxpayers build a new arena for it downtown. The idea is to promote vacation packages for sports fans to come see their team. Las Vegas is the 56’th largest media market in the country and already has 3 arenas: Thomas and Mack Center, MGM Grand Garden, and Mandalay Bay events center. However, Mr. Wynn nor his company controls any of them. City Hall is another story …..

NEW YEARS EVE ROOMS – are going quick and aren’t cheap. Prices range from around $250 a night at Boulder Station to $450 a night at the Riviera and $3000 a night at Caesars.

SPEEDERS REJOICE! – If you drive to Las Vegas, the last meeting of the legislature did you a favor. You already know that the quickest way to get rear-ended or run over on Nevada freeways is to go the speed limit. No one else does. However, now you can breathe much easier and look in your rear view mirror a lot less starting last week. A brand new law took effect allowing you to go up to 10 miles over the speed limit (but not exceeding 75 m.p.h.) on freeways and receive a slap-on-the-wrist fine of $25 with no insurance reporting.

MAKINO TODAI RESTAURANT – advertised as a 160 foot royal Japanese seafood buffet just opened at 3965 S. Decatur, #5 (Decatur near Flamingo). Lunch is around $12 and dinner around $20. 40 kinds of sushi, fresh oysters, tons more. We aren’t much for Japanese food, but if you go feel free to submit a review (allvegastv@aol.com) so that we can let everyone else know if this is worth the 10 minute drive from the Strip.

RISE AND FALL OF BINION’S – This obituary is premature, but there is no question that the new ownership of Binion’s Horseshoe downtown have instituted cost cutting measures drastically reducing the tradition and allure of this downtown landmark. The days of comp meals for $5-10 blackjack players are a thing of the past, if you want your photo taken with the million dollars you had better bring your own camera, and top table limits have been instituted for the first time in the casino’s history. One wonders how long the $3.00 steak special (referenced in our last issue at last issue will last.

Since the opening of the infamous gambling joint, founder Benny Binion had let you establish your top betting limit with your first bet, no matter how big. Million dollar bets have been made, won, and lost there. For those who long for the “good old days”, the Review-Journal has a great historical piece on Benny at http://www.1st100.com/part2/binion.html

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

SASSY SALLY’S FINED – According the Review Journal, the Nevada
Gaming Control Board issued allegations of tip hustling and jackpot
guarantees against Sassy Sally’s and the Coin Castle casinos downtown.
To those who have ever been hustled in the door and harassed to play
machines (not to mention having tips demanded by change people when
you hit even a small jackpot), this comes as pleasant news. Owner
Herb Pastor is facing a maximum fine of $1.5 million dollars for this
long-time practice. This ruling is very welcome by those whose
otherwise enjoyable downtown experience was tainted by the unethical
practices of these 2 casinos. The full story is available at:

This Issue:Megabucks Hits! plus piles of current Las Vegas information

MEGABUCKS – Well, someone else is a instant millionaire, and it’s not you or I. Tuesday night, a 49 year old man from Illinois hit for $21,351,116.56 at Caesars. He stuck $10 in the machine and hit on the first pull. In fact, when they showed it on TV, you could see that he still had 7 credits left (like he cares about those now)! He’s single with no kids and just quit his job due to health problems. He will have little income concerns for a while, collecting $853,878.08 every year for the next 25 years. He’s living proof that it never hurts to stick a couple bucks in and try your luck.Interestingly enough, a tourist from Hawaii hit for $4.5 million on a quarter Jeopardy game just a few days earlier at the Mirage.MOB LAWYER FOR MAYOR – Oscar Goodman is now the shoo-in for mayor next Tuesday. He has ran on populist themes, none of which he has presented a plan to institute. In addition, our weak mayor system gives the mayor little power outside of the bully pulpit. On the other side, the publicity and outspoken leadership qualities generally seem to make him preferable to his opponent (whose name isn’t worth clogging your memory with unless you are a trivia buff).

LAS VEGAS AIRLINE UP AND FLYING! – National Airlines, an upstart headed by former management of America West (and having appeared to learn from that airline’s mistakes) has taken to the air. This Las Vegas based airline has partnered with investing hotels Harrah’s and The Rio to offer truly unique service. Quoting from their website: “If you happen to be staying at either Harrah’s or the Rio, just let us know when you check in for your flight to Las Vegas and we will send your bags directly to the hotel. Just get off the plane and head for the fun!” Plus, if staying at either you can check in right at the hotel. Hey, I don’t mind if you skip baggage claim … gives me more elbow room when I have to fly back home here!

National is serving Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York with planned service to 15 more cities over time. They are looking strongly at Miami, as it is under served both in general and for flights to Las Vegas. National Airlines website is at http://www.nationalairlines.com

COMDEX – Believe it or not, hotel rooms are already starting to fill up for Comdex. If you or your company are thinking about coming, do your boss a favor and pass our http://www.accessvegas.com web address along to the person making the travel plans for Comdex or any other convention anywhere in the country. Your boss will appreciate the money you save and you’ll appreciate not staying in some overpriced dive. During Comdex, it is common for fleabag motels on the wrong side of Fremont St. downtown (you know, the ones that are generally overpriced at $99 a week) to charge a non-refundable $100 a night during Comdex. You can also secure your rental cars early and save through http://www.accessvegas.com

SUMMER IS HERE – With the temperatures generally climbing (Memorial Day weekend saw highs close to 100 and lows in the mid-60’s), we can’t stress enough the importance of drinking plenty of water while out there. Because of the very low humidity, you perspire greatly but don’t realize it because it evaporates off of your body immediately. Drinking booze dehydrates you further. Either way, we suggest stopping by the hotel bars on a regular basis and grabbing a bottled water. Your body will thank you, your stamina will by higher, and you’ll enjoy your vacation a lot more. For those of you that live in Las Vegas, or stay for extended periods of time, you may with to check out Water and Ice at
http://www.waterandicelv.com Unlike those unregulated machines that bake in the sun, Water and Ice is a Grade A, regulated establishment.

PRIME TIME LAS VEGAS TV SHOW – The UPN Network (also seen on most cable systems on WGN out of Chicago) has bought 13 weeks of a new TV show called “The Strip”. It will shoot in Las Vegas, and the basic premise will be 2 ex-Metro police officers working as security for the Tropicana hotel and solving crimes, etc. Seems like they had a similar series like that here once …. something with the word VEGA$ in the name …. We wish the new series well and hope it give you all a great weekly shot of your favorite vacation destination.

HARD ROCK HOTEL EXPANSION – The Hard Rock has completed their $100 million expansion, featuring 330 rooms, a new pool area, nightclub, and much more. A full report is coming soon, but in the meantime they need to fill those rooms and get the word out and are offering rates as low as $65.95 a night. Stop by
http://www.accessvegas.com/rooms/las-vegas-hotel-reservations-strip-area.htm , click on the Hard Rock’s link, and you can do a free price and availability search. If you have thought about staying at the Hard Rock, don’t pass up this opportunity!

NEW AIRPORT – One of these days, those baggage tags might not say LAS on them when you fly in. The quiet push is on to acquire land just south of Jean (about 30 miles south of town) to build a second airport for the area. Even at slow growth estimates, McCarran will be maxed out by 2014. The plan is to move on the new airport in the next few years, moving all cargo and some charter service down to it. The only real objection is from environmentalists worried that the jet noise over the barren desert will have negative consequences. Like it’s better to have more jet noise over the city instead?

SAMS TOWN – Sam’s Town is going to dump $78 million into renovation and expansion soon, adding movie theatres, more gaming space, and a new buffet. This is an attempt to keep up with neighboring Boulder Station whom tends to draw a little more upscale crowd with the themed buffet, movies, and the like. Sam’s Town continues to offer 100x odds on craps and some of the looser slot machines in town. A personal fave: the $4.99 prime rib dinner in Mary’s Diner upstairs (served around the clock). You get salad, rolls, your choice of potato (baked, homemade mashed, or fries), and a good sized slice or prime rib.

This Issue: Robbie Knievel’s Grand Canyon Death Jump
Part II of our Venetian Grand Opening Review

Curious about a buffet, event, or other Las Vegas attraction that look fun but you just haven’t gone out of your way to try yet? Let us review it for you first! Suggestions are always welcome at: accessvegas@accessvegas.com

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Scenic Southwest Tours – by plane, bus, or even helicopter! You’ve seen the glossy ads in the tourist brochures. You’ve thought about it. You come all the way to Las Vegas — why not see one of the some of the most famous landmarks in the world! Don’t by tricked by web sites & magazines that offer discount tours. Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

As many of you may have seen on American TV last, week, “Kaptain” Robbie Knievel successfully set a world record in a “live for television” jump at the Grand Canyon, only to crash once he came off of the end of the landing ramp, breaking a leg and 2 ribs. While no bets were taken, the jump was on many sports book big screens around town.

The craziest thing about this whole event was the fact that just after the landing ramp sat ungraded desert terrain. While the agreement with the local Indian tribe (BLM and National Park Service wanted no part of this) specified upsetting as little of the area as possible, a couple hundred dollars more worth of plywood covering the natural desert would have saved him quite a bit of pain.

Having had to pleasure to see his Las Vegas “Building to Building Death Jump” from one Jockey Club tower to another earlier this year, and then to be present at the after-party at the Hard Rock hotel for Robbie and crew, I can tell you that he and is group are some of the nicest, most down to earth people out there. Of course, when every show could be your last, one is probably more conscious to leave people smiling! The newspaper story (with photos) is available at:

LINK EXPIRED

The motorcycle and leather gear from that jump are now on permanent display that the Tropicana Hotel’s Casino Legends Hall of Fame.

All the best in recovery and continued jumps, Robbie.

Feature Story: The Venetian (continued from last week)

The casino seems small for a property of that size, but it might just be an illusion. This isn’t a casino you are going to get lost in. You don’t feel like you are a rat trapped in a maze. It is not a locals casino, with an emphasis on dollar slots and $5 table minimums on the weekdays. (VP players — 9/6 dollar jacks or better available).

Unlike Mandalay Bay, there is not an overabundance of bars, with only an ornate circular bar toward the center and another one at the sports book. A third is located in La Scena (the lounge area), which showcases top, professional lounge acts from 6:00 PM until 2:00 AM in an upscale upscale atmosphere. Drink prices are in line with other major hotels, running from $2.75 for a domestic bottle to $5.50 and $6.50 for top shelf call drinks. (There may be an entertainment tax surcharge in the lounge — a very common thing here in Las Vegas).

The sportsbook is adequate, but certainly wasn’t built to cater to much more than the hotel guests.

Dining options include an nice food court and a “coffee shop”. The food court has a McDonalds, Subway, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and Baskin Robins … almost. It has generic, slightly upscale version of each with prices running about $2-3 higher than the average above chains. The atmosphere is top notch, with seating facilities more resembling a decent restaurant than a food court. Not a bad place to enjoy a $5 hamburger.

The “coffee shop” is actually a yuppie dining establishment named Grand Lux Cafe, featuring “unique casual global cuisine”. And they aren’t kidding. I’ve seen novels shorter than this menu. Crabcakes to Korean tacos, pastas, chicken, lamb, cajun shrimp, fresh fish provenca, martinis, and significant wine list and much, much more.

The Union — not a lot to say. No picketing, and informal conversation with employees ranging from security to dealers found them quick to volunteer how happy they are with the wages, benefits (that don’t cost them a dime), and the fact that they don’t pay union dues. So, far this has absolutely NOT turned into a “Frontier” type situation.

I’d be remiss without mentioning the cocktail waitresses. (WARNING: Don’t shoot the messenger — I’m just reporting it like it is). Unlike other casinos who were burdened with promoting to their new properties based on seniority, Mr. Adelson took advantage of the fact he was hiring fresh for every position. This includes the cocktail waitresses. On an average swing shift, there is not a waitress who couldn’t walk right out and get a print modeling job. Rumor has it that he “raided” the most attractive ladies from every casino in town. The unique uniforms flatter the ladies in every way, and The Venetian seems to make no apologies for using the waitresses as an integral part of the whole visual feel of the property. They one-upped the Rio.

As mentioned in part one of this article (available at
https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/access-vegas-insider-vibe-may-20-1999/ ), there is indication that Steve Wynn may feel concerned about being upstaged. Mirage Resorts was slated to begin construction on their next mega-resort on the site of the Holiday Inn Boardwalk around 2002. Just this last week, they announced plans to start moving on the project in a much shorter time frame. The official reason is that Las Vegas is absorbing all of the new hotel rooms better than expected, but that’s a stretch considering that the Aladdin and Paris both have yet to come online and The Venetian is just now running at full occupancy.

Bottom line in my opinion? Mr. Wynn’s company has the land and the cash flow and he will not rest until he has the most elegant property in town again. If you want to bet on him, Mirage Resorts stock is publicly traded.

We have a full pictorial section on the Venetian at Las Vegas Venetian Hotel Casino Photos
