LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

WHEEL … OF … FORTUNE – If you have spent any time in a casino, you hear those slot machines spit out that chant every few minutes until you are sick of it (unless you are playing and winning). Well, the real thing is coming. Kind of. Beginning Dec. 23, the world’s most popular TV game show also will be played as a live, nightly attraction at the MGM. Tickets are $17.50 and audience members will be participating. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Dec-10-Fri-1999/weekly/12481186.html

THE LAS VEGAS BOWL – matches Fresno St. and Utah this Saturday Dec. 18. You can view the game on ESPN2 at 6:00 PM Eastern time and get a little of Las Vegas in your living room. Or, if you want to get away for the weekend and see some good football, tickets start at $10 and are available online at (702) 895-3900 Las Vegas Bowl stories are available at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/sports/packages/lvbowl/

RODEO – the National Finals Rodeo rolled through town for it’s 12 day run and people in country attire could be seen having a good time both on the Strip and downtown. I’m not “country”, but these people seem to be some of the nicest and friendliest people you will meet. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Assn. is going to ad a nationally televised winter season beginning in January with the finals to be held at the MGM. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Dec-06-Mon-1999/news/12497185.html and we are giving away the NFR guide from the Review Journal in our contests section.

ANTIQUE ORGAN – The once-adored Kimball organ sits center stage under the bright lights of Roxy’s Pipe Organ Pizzeria at the Fiesta hotel-casino. A crew of 25 artists, cabinet makers and electricians resurrected the 20,000 pieces and this is a must-see. Full story at http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/archives/1999/dec/05/509553586.html?%22pipe+cleaners%22 and Fiesta discount rooms available at http://www.travelnow.com/s/hotel.html?ID=120406&cid=2005 The Fiesta is 10 minutes from downtown and 15 minutes from the Strip in the northwest part of town.

PLAYERS EDGE – a column written by noted gaming experts Bob Dancer and Jeffrey Compton detail the tremendous deal, giveaways, and bonus points that casinos are using to get people in the door during this slowest time of the year. Read all about it at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Dec-10-Fri-1999/weekly/12508475.html

LIVING IT UP AND DOUBLING DOWN IN LAS VEGAS – is the new book by author and attorney Anthony Martinez. He took the $50,000 advance for a book, and came to Las Vegas live out the life of a high roller for 30 days, then chronicle what happens, both good and bad. Full review at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Nov-28-Sun-1999/lifestyles/12341196.html and you can purchase the book from Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0375501819/invegascom Amazon can still deliver by Christmas using standard shipping.

SHOPPING – is bringing people to Las Vegas for an excuse to combine Christmas preparation with pleasure. The huge shopping galleries at the Venetian, Caesars and the Fashion Show Mall are taking center stage. Plus, rooms are dirt cheap between now and Christmas and lines are almost nonexistent. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Dec-09-Thu-1999/lifestyles/12484934.html

FEATURE STORY: Bellagio Buffet

Note: A reader brought to our attention that the MGM Grand Theme park, noted in last weeks newsletter as a “Top 10 Free” thing to do, is closed for the winter and will re-open in spring of 2000. Another noted that the park has varied between offering free admission and charging. The park has never been a real success, and they have been “stealing” parts of it for other ventures. We will review it when it re-opens.

Another reader names Susan noted the Bellagio Fountain show times:

>The Fountains of Bellagio Show Times:
>ááááááááááááááá Monday – Friday:
>3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., every 30 minutes
>7:00 p.m. until Midnight, every 15 minutes
>áááá Saturdays, Sundays & Holidays:
>Noon until 7:00 p.m., every 30 minutes
>7:00 p.m. until Midnight, every 15 minutes.

Thanks for the kind words! So far, we have had a 100% positive response regarding ShowVegas at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?cscheme=5&amid=143 For a very reasonable service fee, they do all the leg work to get the show you want on the date you want. As with any of our sponsors, all feedback is appreciated.

We called them. They do rent wheelchairs, but nothing electric. They do not deliver, so your own car or a rental car (or taxi ride — they are about 3 miles from the center Strip area) is necessary to pick up and drop off. Rentals are $15 a day or $35 a week for a standard 18″ wheelchair and a credit card deposit of $150 is mandatory. You also might call ahead to your hotel and see if they can accommodate a request for a wheelchair.

We understand that company is having problems with their fare-search software and we pulled the link off the top of this newsletter until they get the problem corrected.

With all due respect, we have never hidden the fact that we publish this free newsletter filled with the best unbiased information we can offer in hopes that our readers will book their hotel, car, shows, and tours through us or the sponsors. In fact, the paragraph after the free contest section notes that each and every week.

However, we do go out of our way to make sure that we offer good, solid deals and discounts in all departments and are very responsive when we hear of a problem with a sponsor. We dropped Prodigy Internet a few months ago as a sponsor because they didn’t get the free discs to people that requested them.

FEATURE STORY: Tipping in Las Vegas

This story was inspired by David C. Surette’s Letter to the Editor this week. Las Vegas can be intimidating by it’s very nature. In fact, one of our main goals in publishing this newsletter is the give you that “edge” and the knowledge you need to help eliminate that intimidation.

These are my suggestions. Do you tip more or less? Have their been situations where you tipped and it really paid off, or tipped and got lousy treatment anyway? Let us know at allvegastv@aol.com Make sure to include your name and state (city optional) if you want it considered for publication.

If this is of no interest to you, skip down to the letters to the editor. If you are new to this newsletter, this Comdex article is NOT typical. We are a Las Vegas newsletter. FEATURE STORY: Comdex Las Vegas

On a side note, we just got cable modem and we LOVE it. We downloaded the entire Internet Explorer 5.0 (18 MB) in just 12 minutes. This takes well over 2 hours on a 56K modem. Note to AOL users — do upgrade to AOL 5.0 but then go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm and download Internet Explorer 5.0. Why? IE 5.0 is under the hood of AOL, but AOL left a ton of stuff out. Also, if you want to use AOL 5.0 with a cable modem (and yes, you do get that incredible speed), information is at AOL Keyword: BYOA

We found cable modem very cost effective at $40 a month because we were able to get rid of Earthlink ($20), a second phone link ($18) and our DMX box ($6). With cable modem, you can take advantage of the free CD quality internet radio offered at http://windowsmedia.microsoft.com/radio/Radio5.asp without suffering the slowdowns.

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

NATIONAL FINALS RODEO – is less than 5 weeks away. This “Superbowl of Rodeo” runs December 3-12 this year and the event is a must for fans of country or rodeo. Even if you can’t get a ticket, the town turns into cowboy central with Wranglers and cowboy hats dominating the landscape and country music everywhere you turn. Rooms fill up pretty fast, so come for one of the weekends or see if you can get a few days off and book your room at http://www.accessvegas.com

SPORTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL 3 – was shot at the Hard Rock hotel and other spots here in Las Vegas and will air November 13’th on MTV. This program will feature music by the Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Juvenile and Smash Mouth as well as 4 world record attempts. (Note: the show has already been taped, and we alerted you to those dates a month ago. Don’t show up expecting to see something live that weekend).

SO THE WATER TASTES FUNNY – in Las Vegas. It certainly does. Most tourists and many locals drink bottled water. We personally get our drinking water from Water and Ice here in Las Vegas ( http://www.accessvegas.com/waterandice ). But is it safe? Yes. The majority of it comes from Lake Mead, which is quite pure because of the lack of agriculture and industry along it’s banks. You can read more at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-27-Wed-1999/news/12200281.html

PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999 – Las Vegas is ready. Beyond ready. Everything from law enforcement to our water supply delivery and treatment has been checked and tested. If you are one of the few avoiding spending New Year’s Eve with us here because of fear that the world will end, you may find the following two articles of interest: http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-29-Fri-1999/news/12248031.html and http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-31-Sun-1999/news/12043342.html

NEW YEARS EVE LAS VEGAS ROOMS – are still available! Call Hotel Reservations Network at (800) 666-5268 for a free price quote! NOTE: You MUST stay on the line until you get a person. HRN is NOT booking these specific dates online. We will be leaving this notice up as long as rooms continue to be available, but they are starting to go fast.

NOTE: ShowVegas is a new partner. We booked 138 show tickets through them last month and we’d like to hear your thoughts at feedback@in-vegas.com if you used them.

2 FREE CONCERT EVENTS:

SURVIVOR, BRIAN HOWE (formerly of Bad Company) and two opening bands play free shows downtown at the Fremont St. Experience on November 12’th and 13’th. Opening bands start at 6:00 PM and Fremont St. discount hotel rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotels-downtown.htm

MARK HUFF with special guests plays the House of Blues in a free concert November 6 (this Saturday). This is a great chance to see what the House of Blues (located in Mandalay Bay) is like. FEATURE STORY: Restaurant Reviews by Guest Columnist Les Kincaid

Pasta Shop & Restaurante’
2495 East Tropicana, Las Vegas 89119
451-1893
Italian Dinner 5-10 pm
Monday thru Saturday, closed Sunday
Mastercard/Visa accepted

This charming Italian restaurante’ is a true symbol of the American way. Chef
David Alenik grew up in the east coast and attended a formal culinary school after coming home from the Navy. He gained quite good experience in New York and eventually moved to Las Vegas. He certainly has been able to create a reputation that any Chef would be proud of, working for two highly visible hotels upon arrival to Las Vegas. Then, when that burning desire to create and operate his own establishment was discussed with his family, both he and his brother decided to offer Las Vegans great fresh homemade pasta at food establishments all over the city. They do a big business here in town allowing restaurants that insist on fresh food for their guests to select from a large list of pastas they can use.

They also opened this intimate dining room that has standing room only from time to time. They choose only fresh ingredients to produce some of the towns best Italian Cuisine with a flair.

Using his own fresh semolina pasta creatively prepared gives locals and visitors alike a real treat. This is a favorite quite dining room for anyones relaxing evening, when you just want to enjoy a great meal and a nice glass of wine.

Reservations are suggested. Plan on wishing you had found this sleepy hideaway a long time ago.

Thai Spice
4433 West Flamingo
362-5308
Lunch-Dinner
11-10 pm Monday thru Thursday, Friday and Saturday to 11pm, closed Sunday
All major cards accepted

Do you have a craving for GREAT Thai food? Then you need to know about Thai Spice if you love authentic and spicy Asian foods. It is voted the best Thai restaurant year after year by the locals and visitors alike.

This fine Thai-Chinese restaurant has taken a number of Asian items and made them available with as much heart as you would care for. From 1-10, ten being hottest, you’ll savor the combinations of flavors and heat that complement each other. The menu boasts a number of appetizers like the typical eggroll, won ton, or golden fried shrimp, but their is also pork sate, Thai BBQ chicken, Todd Munn, Mee Krob or Chan Lam.

The soup selection hails won ton, vegetable or seafood soups, but you need to discover a unique combination of complementary tastes like Tom Yum. (Shrimps, lime juice, lemon grass, and exotic spices). Salads offer seafood, shrimp yum, beef yum and grass noodle yum. Entrees include poultry (try the chicken curry — wonderful), pork, beef (try the Prig-Khing pork), seafood or a number or great vegetable selections. Noodle and rice dishes are a great value.

Thai Spice “must visit” for locals and out of towners, and is refreshingly clean and modern both in appearance and presentations. They even cater to weenies that want their “spicy” left in the kitchen. You don’t have to burn anything you don’t want to here.

Chef Les Kincaid has been involved with food, wine, and golf in Las Vegas since 1978, teaching and writing about all three and hosting a nationally syndicated radio program on 21 stations across the US. Presently, he teaches cooking and wine appreciation classes through UNLV continuing education. Shortly you will be able to see and hear the chef on television and a new radio program in Las Vegas.

His latest cookbook “Never Trust A skinny Chef…II” is available at his very extensive and popular web site: http://www.leskincaid.com or email comments to les@leskincaid.com

From time to time, we are asked about Laughlin information. We do have a page of great Laughlin links at http://www.accessvegas.com/laughlin-nevada-nv.htm but our newsletter really is focused on just Las Vegas. However, we do hear regular reports about how cheap the rooms are and how easy comps are to come by. Also, Laughlin is about 10 degrees warmer in the winter. It’s not uncommon for Laughlin to have “pool weather” even in very late fall and early spring.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

MR. LAS VEGAS – is going to be spending a lot more time in Las Vegas. Wayne Newton has just signed a contract with the Stardust which has him playing 7 shows a week (6 nights a week), 40 weeks a year, for a reported $25 million-a-year. Read the story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-27-Wed-1999/news/12216579.html and Stardust discount rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm (Stardust link).

IMPLOSION TIME – It looks to be a while before our next implosion in Las Vegas, but on Super Bowl Sunday 2000 (Jan. 30) the Mapes Hotel in Reno is going to be imploded. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-28-Thu-1999/business/12237404.html and if you are planning to party in Reno for the Super Bowl and catch the implosion, Reno discount rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/reno-sparks-nevada.htm

THE HAVANA CIGAR BAR – in the Tropicana Hotel celebrates Monday Night Football every week with $1.50 bottled beer, $2.00 well drinks, 15% off all premium cigars, and a “buy one, get one free” of their own “Cuban” hand-rolled cigars which are prepared on the premises.

YOU CAN BET ON IT – Larry Grossman hosts a great, non-biased show about sports betting every day locally on KBAD 920 AM and you can also get it live on the web by going to http://www.larrygrossman.com This show is NOT like those you see on cable TV on the weekends, where “pro handicappers” brag about how they went 89% the last weekend. He purely has some of the best experts in the business give their insights.

BONEHEAD AWARD – goes to me for writing an entire review on the Houdini Lives Again show and failing to note that it plays at the Plaza Hotel downtown. I did include the following info (for those new or curious): The shows plays six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday at 4 PM with an added 8 PM show on Sunday. Tickets are $15.95.

I’m sure it comes as little surprise that I don’t have a journalistic background! I started this newsletter in response the all the glossy tourism magazines which are full of “articles” that are just paid ads. I am trying to tell it like it really is (or at least how I see it). Please — if I leave out something or don’t make sense, do drop me a line at allvegastv@aol.com and let me know. I rely heavily on reader INPUT to help improve the quality of this newsletter.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HOUDINI LIVES AGAIN – starring Dixie Dooley and featuring Houdini style magic kicked off with Mr. Dooley escaping a regulation straitjacket while suspended 80 feet above Fremont St. downtown. It was a impressive stunt, with the height alone providing plenty of tension. You can see a photo at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-06-Wed-1999/news/12094102.html and we have 2-1 coupons to this great show (reviewed next week) in our contest section. Discount downtown hotel rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotels-downtown.htm

99 CENT BUFFET – the Silverton Hotel and Casino is offering a 99 cent all-you-can-eat buffet every Thursday in October 1999 from noon to 9:00 PM. Silverton discount rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/rooms/las-vegas-hotel-reservations-strip-area.htm (Silverton link).

ESPN’S ESPY AWARD SHOW – is coming to Las Vegas after years in New York City. The show will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on February 14, 2000. That is Valentine’s day and what an opportunity to take your significant other to Las Vegas and also have one of the greatest chances to see stars that you will ever get! Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Sep-24-Fri-1999/sports/12016077.html Tickets at (702) 474-4000 and MGM discount rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm (MGM link).

ELLIS ISLAND PARTIES – this casino behind Bally’s (kitty corner to the Maxim) is holding an “All you can Eat and Drink” Octoberfest Oct. 22 and 23 from noon until 11:00 PM for only $10.00. This includes a variety of food as well as their microbrews. They also do this $10.00 event every Sunday starting at noon and every Monday starting at 5:00 PM. The events run until the end of the days football game(s). They are also having a Halloween Karaoke Costume party starting at 9:00 PM that night. Ladies will drink free from 9-11:00 PM and there are cash prizes for costumes.

WINNER! – Bruce Pobanz of Las Vegas was the winner of the Sahara Speedworld free passes.

Because of the length of other sections of today’s newsletter, this review will be on the brief side, but I can sum it up in one word: GO! This guy is good, and he won’t be doing an afternoon show forever. Use the restroom ahead of time — you don’t want to miss one minute!

Click for show price and times.

We were swamped with letters regarding kids in Las Vegas. We have tried to publish a good representation and only “signed” letters are published. Some letters were edited for space, but not content or context. For those newer to the newsletter, read our take on this subject at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-06-24.htm and our list of non-gaming Las Vegas activities is at http://www.accessvegas.com/activities-entertainment-kids.htm
