LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

WHEEL … OF … FORTUNE – If you have spent any time in a casino, you hear those slot machines spit out that chant every few minutes until you are sick of it (unless you are playing and winning). Well, the real thing is coming. Kind of. Beginning Dec. 23, the world’s most popular TV game show also will be played as a live, nightly attraction at the MGM. THE LAS VEGAS BOWL – matches Fresno St. and Utah this Saturday Dec. 18. You can view the game on ESPN2 at 6:00 PM Eastern time and get a little of Las Vegas in your living room. RODEO – the National Finals Rodeo rolled through town for it’s 12 day run and people in country attire could be seen having a good time both on the Strip and downtown. I’m not “country”, but these people seem to be some of the nicest and friendliest people you will meet. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Assn. is going to ad a nationally televised winter season beginning in January with the finals to be held at the MGM. ANTIQUE ORGAN – The once-adored Kimball organ sits center stage under the bright lights of Roxy’s Pipe Organ Pizzeria at the Fiesta hotel-casino. A crew of 25 artists, cabinet makers and electricians resurrected the 20,000 pieces and this is a must-see. LIVING IT UP AND DOUBLING DOWN IN LAS VEGAS – is the new book by author and attorney Anthony Martinez. He took the $50,000 advance for a book, and came to Las Vegas live out the life of a high roller for 30 days, then chronicle what happens, both good and bad. SHOPPING – is bringing people to Las Vegas for an excuse to combine Christmas preparation with pleasure. The huge shopping galleries at the Venetian, Caesars and the Fashion Show Mall are taking center stage. Plus, rooms are dirt cheap between now and Christmas and lines are almost nonexistent. Note: A reader brought to our attention that the MGM Grand Theme park, noted in last weeks newsletter as a “Top 10 Free” thing to do, is closed for the winter and will re-open in spring of 2000. Another noted that the park has varied between offering free admission and charging. The park has never been a real success, and they have been “stealing” parts of it for other ventures. We will review it when it re-opens.

Regarding last weeks question about scooter or wheelchair rental:

We called them. They do rent wheelchairs, but nothing electric. They do not deliver, so your own car or a rental car (or taxi ride — they are about 3 miles from the center Strip area) is necessary to pick up and drop off. Rentals are $15 a day or $35 a week for a standard 18″ wheelchair and a credit card deposit of $150 is mandatory. You also might call ahead to your hotel and see if they can accommodate a request for a wheelchair.

With all due respect, we have never hidden the fact that we publish this free newsletter filled with the best unbiased information we can offer in hopes that our readers will book their hotel, car, shows, and tours through us or the sponsors. In fact, the paragraph after the free contest section notes that each and every week.

However, we do go out of our way to make sure that we offer good, solid deals and discounts in all departments and are very responsive when we hear of a problem with a sponsor. There’ll be nightly performances on the pipe organ, orchestras on Sundays and a schedule of live concerts. They have also added 20,000 square feet of casino space and 500 slot machines. DRAI’S – The upscale eatery in the Barbary Coast has opened an after-hours supper club starting at midnight. It is slated to feature much of the restaurant menu as well as a DJ spinning music. They have renovated the bar and stage to accommodate live music and will be open midnight to 6:00 AM serving dinner and breakfast. This story was inspired by David C. Surette’s Letter to the Editor this week. Las Vegas can be intimidating by it’s very nature. In fact, one of our main goals in publishing this newsletter is the give you that “edge” and the knowledge you need to help eliminate that intimidation.

On a side note, we just got cable modem and we LOVE it. We downloaded the entire Internet Explorer 5.0 (18 MB) in just 12 minutes. This takes well over 2 hours on a 56K modem. Note to AOL users — do upgrade to AOL 5.0 but then go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm and download Internet Explorer 5.0. Why? IE 5.0 is under the hood of AOL, but AOL left a ton of stuff out. Also, if you want to use AOL 5.0 with a cable modem (and yes, you do get that incredible speed), information is at AOL Keyword: BYOA

We found cable modem very cost effective at $40 a month because we were able to get rid of Earthlink ($20), a second phone link ($18) and our DMX box ($6). With cable modem, you can take advantage of the free CD quality internet radio offered at http://windowsmedia.microsoft.com/radio/Radio5.asp without suffering the slowdowns.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

NATIONAL FINALS RODEO – is less than 5 weeks away. This “Superbowl of Rodeo” runs December 3-12 this year and the event is a must for fans of country or rodeo. Even if you can’t get a ticket, the town turns into cowboy central with Wranglers and cowboy hats dominating the landscape and country music everywhere you turn. Rooms fill up pretty fast, so come for one of the weekends or see if you can get a few days off and book your room at http://www.accessvegas.com

SPORTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL 3 – was shot at the Hard Rock hotel and other spots here in Las Vegas and will air November 13’th on MTV. This program will feature music by the Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Juvenile and Smash Mouth as well as 4 world record attempts. (Note: the show has already been taped, and we alerted you to those dates a month ago. Don’t show up expecting to see something live that weekend).

SO THE WATER TASTES FUNNY – in Las Vegas. It certainly does. Most tourists and many locals drink bottled water. The majority of it comes from Lake Mead, which is quite pure because of the lack of agriculture and industry along it’s banks.
