The winner, who requested anonymity, is a 25-year-old software engineer from Los Angeles. Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine, Celine – You can’t avoid the hype! She debuts tonight as we go to press. Dates and ticket info are available on our headliners calendar.

Tickets are sold out well in advance but premium seating (through our premium broker) is available for most of the sold out dates. Once the dust settles, we’ll have a full review of the show. They have noted it may take a few weeks of tweaking to reach the peak vision they have for it.

Safety – I am on the Las Vegas Strip 2-3 times a week. There are subtle signs of more security and police presence, and the hotels have noted much more security activity not visible to guest to provide optimum safety. I don’t even give it a second thought.

Besides, why would anyone do anything to Las Vegas? We are the center of … just about nothing. No major media. No important financial centers. Not a huge population center. Many would figure that “evil Sin City” got what it had coming and wouldn’t care! And terrorism is about making people care.

  • Bellagio has exquisite Italian decor throughout, topped off with authentically faux Renaissance ceiling paintings. The resort has the best in Continental dining, and enough Italian marble to make Michelangelo drop his chisel and try his fortune at the tables.
  • And for ultimate Italian ambiance as experienced by Francis Albert Sinatra, Dino Crocetti and Anthony DiBenedetto, visit that venerable Vegas landmark, Caesars Palace. Where else can you slurp gelatto while watching a mechanical Bacchus and other plaster gods extol the virtues of wine, gambling and shopping in Caesars Forum Shops?

Celine Dion – debuts March 25 at Caesars Palace and will be on Oprah the same day with a taped interview. The hype has been unbelievable, as this show is supposed to a Cirque Du Soleil type event meets Celine’s dramatic vocals. Dates and ticket info are available on our headliners calendar.

Rates Down, Gas Up – With the threat of war and higher gas prices, room rates are falling. If the price at the pump or airfare is making you think twice about visting Las Vegas, keep in mind that you’ll be saving at hotel check-out.

Featured Review: Coyote Ugly

Coyote Ugly is a southern style bar and dance saloon featuring hot female bartenders who have elevated pouring drinks to an art form. Like its New York City namesake, each night, sexy, sassy, tough talking Coyote Ugly bartenders ascend atop the bar to perform a bold show filled with stunts ranging from fire-blowing to body shots, clogging and choreographed dance numbers, all while inviting customer interaction.Coyote Ugly boasts some of the wildest bartenders and sexiest barkeep this side of the Mississippi. The “Coyotes” were selected in an arduous competition of 150 finalists for the coveted bartender positions. Most of the “Coyotes” had professional dancing experience before joining Coyote Ugly with experience ranging from Las Vegas production shows to cheerleading for professional sports teams. There is even a former Rockette on the payroll.

Coyote Ugly’s southern Americana decor invites its guests to check their inhibitions at the door, kick back and relax. Dark, trendy martini bars with VIP couches and private corners have filled the Las Vegas landscape, the aim of Coyote Ugly’s design is to knock that trend down a notch in an atmosphere that makes the guests part of one big party.

Like the New York City original, Coyote Ugly Las Vegas is designed to look like a southern bar that has endured years of partying, entrenched with southern flea market treasures and dark worn wood. There is ample room for dancing on the bar, where even the most reserved guests are invited to showcase their talents and leave their undergarments behind for the “Bra Wall of Fame.”

Fire Safety – In light of the tragic Rhode Island fire, many wonder how safe entertainment activities are. Especially in Las Vegas where many production shows use pyro and so many concerts and events roll through town. Clark County (Las Vegas) has 35 inspectors handling the roughly 200 special events that apply for the use of pyrotechnics. Paperwork is filled out weeks in advance and inspectors preview all effects. The depth of the staff insures that someone is on hand no matter what time of day an event happens.

Boogity, Boogity, Boogity – NASCAR’s UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 invades the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend and the event has been sold out for weeks. No ticket? Stuck home? Note the 11:30 AM Pacific start time and tune to your local Fox station. The best way to get to the race? Take the Cat Ride Race Shuttle (run by our local public bus service). This is the only way to go, as these busses use special routes that get you to the speedway in 45 minutes. I’m rooting for home-town boy #97 but the #2 is a sentimental favorite.

Rio Abrupt Cocktail Change – When the Rio opened, it was famous for beautiful, young cocktail waitresses in outfits that weren’t much more than a one-piece thong swimsuit. Now they are scrapping the entire cocktail staff to hire drink servers who will perform singing and dancing choreographed routines throughout the gaming area.

Some feel this is a way to get rid of cocktail waitresses who may not look at good in the skimpy outfits as they did a decade ago. Others see it as part of a bigger world-wide resort trend toward performing bartenders and waitresses. You can read The Rio’s press release and let us know what you think in our Rio Replaces Cocktail Servers forum. Think this will fly? Sound like a good change or will you miss the current waitresses? Let us know!

Ticket Advice – We often get asked how to get tickets to the very popular shows like “O”, Mystere, Siegfried and Roy, Blue Man Group, and Danny Gans. Yes we have them (at face value). Yes, they go very quickly. The key is to buy well in advance, but keep this in mind: some tickets are not released for sale more than three months ahead.

Our advice? Once your travel dates are set in stone, visit our Las Vegas Shows page and check availability. If that hard-to-get show has tickets available, buy them. If not available yet, keep checking back every few days and specifically 85-90 days before your visit. Most Las Vegas shows are now reserved seating, so even if you aren’t trying for a tough ticket, buying in advance often insures better seats.

Cook E. Ain’t No Rookie – Infamous club and lounge performer Cook E. Jarr is back at his Harrah’s Carnival Court gig midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Cook’s 30’th birthday is probably a couple decades behind him, but his audience keeps getting younger.We were at the outdoor venue Friday night as he played to a packed bar area and ripped through both “old school” and recent dance and R & B favorites in his inimitable style.

The dance floor was packed and while the crowd skews younger, no age group is out of place. With the weather warming up, Cook E. Jarr is a party worth checking out. Featured Review: Dirk Arthur: The New Art of Magic

If Dirk Arthur’s name rings a bell, you may have seen the Bally’s Marquee over the past decade. Dirk was a featured act in Jubilee! and had his name in lights on the Las Vegas Strip. I’d seen him in the show, and he is good. His move to headlining status at The Silverton left people wondering if he could carry a show by himself and others wondering where The Silverton was!In an era with more shows than ever, trying their luck in just about every location and hotel you can try a show, it appears that Arthur’s gamble paid off. The Silverton’s showroom isn’t a converted lounge, but a full-sized, comfortable venue holding perhaps 400-500 people (my guess) and Dirk is filling it up on a consistent basis.

The show is aptly named The New Art Of Magic because Dirk’s specialties are huge scale illusions, the kind you often see with Lance Burton or David Copperfield. He levitates a Lamborghini and makes it vanish in mid-air. He puts a twist on the “saw the lady in half” by cutting her into nine pieces. He has an industrial size drill pierce right through him. And he makes white tigers vanish and switch places. Read More …

Hello from Las Vegas! We wish many of you well who are digging out of severe winter storms. We had two straight days of much needed rain last week but it is back to sunny with mid-60 F temperatures.

Although this is a feedback issue, I wanted to mention this great show for a great cause this weekend. If you live local, or will be in town, what a great way to see many of Las Vegas’ top stars on one stage!

I have no problem with other people smoking, and I know it is part of the gambling seen, but I myself prefer not to play where the smoke is so thick that I smell like smoke after 3 showers. Now that neighboring state California and many cities in the U.S. have outlawed smoking in public indoor places, some non-smokers are becoming increasingly aware that Las Vegas is a “smoke ’em if you got ’em” state. The newer hotels with their high ceilings and state-of-the-art ventilation have done a pretty good job at combating this issue. If you patronize a Las Vegas hotel because of their cleaner air or dedicated non-smoking section, share your thoughts about Non-Smoking Gaming.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Imperial Palace is basically a Motel 6 (slightly better) caliber rooms with an incredible location at a very reasonable price. Many come to Las Vegas and only see their room when they are sleeping so they don’t care.

You are almost asking the impossible because hotels have cleaning and renovation schedules and you may be put in a room that was just gone over, or one that is wearing a bit. A basic rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for. They don’t call it Caesars Palace for nothing! No matter where you stay, always avail yourself of the opportunity to complain if you feel your room has issues with cleanliness.

You are looking at a cab ride. Better yet, rent a car for the day (or your stay) as the cab ride round trip will run you what a day of rental car will cost. Las Vegas is thought to be The Strip surrounded by a few dumpy apartments and the desert, but in reality 1.5 million people live in the Las Vegas area and it is quite spread out.

Green Valley is one of the nicer parts of town, located 10+ miles southeast of The Strip. For those with a car, you can find Green Valley Ranch by heading south on The Strip past Mandalay Bay, past the Las Vegas sign, and to the “beltway”, also known as 215. Head east on the beltway (freeway) for about 6 miles and you can’t miss Green Valley Ranch to the right. Take the next exit called “Green Valley Parkway.”

Hello from Las Vegas! We’ve continued to have beautiful days around 70 (F) but I won’t rub it in. (Our) spring is a great time to be in Las Vegas.

Missing Newsletters? – We are aware that some of you aren’t getting all of our newsletters. We are stuck with a problem. Words like (read backwards) ONISAC, Las Vegas PIRTS, GNILBMAG, and other words related to our fine city are also words that many spam filters stop.

Solutions: If you use use your internet service’s email filter, you can turn it down a notch. If you use a free email with an automatic filter, you can subscribe under your regular email address.

A more simple solution might be to use our own Vegas Mail free email. It won’t block our newsletter, and it will send your regular email a note (if you wish) letting you know when you have mail on your Vegas Mail account. Plus, spammers don’t seem to bug us. They go after the big email systems, nor ours. I use Vegas Mail as my main personal (non-business) email address and love it!

Your tipping guide was incredibly helpful on our recent trip to Vegas. We were prepared to tip the front desk clerk, but we were satisfied with the room we received. We did tip the maitre d’ at a show with general admission seating (and a full house) and got a great seat. (We didn’t see anyone else tipping, and they all were shuttled to the outer tables.) Your advice on tipping the maid daily is something we will do in every city from now on.

It’s a holiday of a lifetime for us and I doubt we’d ever do it again as we are from England and its quite an expensive holiday (sorry vacation I forgot!). We intend to make this one a BIG one! Obviously I don’t expect anyone to plan our entire trip, but we don’t want to travel all that way and then miss things we should have done. We went to Florida in year 2000 and this happened. There is nothing worse than coming home and meeting someone who has been there and they say ‘didn’t you go to this place or that place???’.

“UKali” is smart to plan ahead. Las Vegas has so much to do and see and most know that overwhelming feeling of “did we do and see the interesting things”? Help her out by letting her know what attractions you feel are a “must see” or which you would never go back to on our Travel Questions/Trip Suggestions.

I always rent a car. I find the rates cheaper than taking a cab. Just having the freedom to go where and when you want is worth the effort, rather than confining yourself to a small area, and then having to rely on expensive cabs just go a few miles. It is very easy to get around Las Vegas if you get to know the roads that run parallel to the strip. Just stay off the strip while driving.

Most people move away from The Strip to avoid the traffic, commotion, and have a “normal” life. I moved closer so we can increase our great coverage of Las Vegas tourism.

Cold Enough? – Every summer, people say “I don’t see how anybody can live in Las Vegas … this heat is crazy.” I dunno … been near 70 here since the first of the year and most of the rest of the U.S. weather map looks bone chilling. I’d suggest a quick trip to Las Vegas to thaw out. Doesn’t wearing shorts sound more fun than layering clothes!

Write Down This Number! – A great new service for readers: Many within driving distance jump in the car for a “road trip” to Vegas, not giving any thought to which hotel, or just calling the usual one and taking whatever they have. Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Super Bowl Weekend – is always huge. Most hotels have one (or more) parties where a set fee buys you admission, food, and (sometimes) booze but co’mon … this is Las Vegas. Every TV in public view at every bar, lounge, sports book, and anywhere else in the resort and tourism areas will be tuned to the game. You can’t escape it!

The Raiders are a 3.5 point favorite as I write (if you bet the Raiders, they must win by 3.5 points or more, or Buc’s bettors win instead) and there is no excitement like having a nice bet on a big game and getting that start-to-finish thrill. Room availability is still good for this weekend: Check the rates! Remember that many hotels don’t allow Saturday night arrival and the game isn’t until Sunday evening so book an extra night and call in sick so you can get home Monday.

Megabucks – is topping $28,000,000 as I write. That is a lot of zeros behind a dollar sign! You can watch the numbers rise at the IGT Megabucks site and fantasize. Be interesting to see if it hits this Super Bowl weekend.

Green Valley Ranch – earned their first AAA Four Diamond award, joining The Venetian, Mirage, Treasure Island, Golden Nugget, and Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas. Of note is that Green Valley Ranch is the first “local’s” casino to earn the honor. The property feels like an upscale local’s casino to visitors just going to eat, drink, gamble, etc. but to guests it is a boutique resort in the hills with a great view of the entire Las Vegas Valley and The Strip.

Clang, Clang, Clang Is Done, Done, Done – MGM Mirage is the latest gaming company to make the move to “ticket in, ticket” out machines (as opposed to the old ones that pay out actual coins). Oh what a night! New Year’s Eve never fails to be a wild ride here in Las Vegas. With the entire Las Vegas Strip closed down, it turned into a massive pedestrian mall for the midnight fireworks.I was fortunate to attend with a couple of first-timers. They couldn’t get over what an amazing celebration it was. Ironically, this was one of the most tame I had experienced, partly due to January 1 falling on a midweek (many visitors needing to check out and leave the next morning).

Tame didn’t mean lame, though. An estimated 250,000+ were relishing in this unique experience, walking right down the middle of one of the world’s most famous streets, drink in hand, smiles on every face.

Something cool comes over people when they visit Las Vegas. You can see it and sense it, and the New Year’s revelers were definitely feeling it. You put 1/4 million people together and add booze in almost any other situation or city and you are asking for trouble. But police reported few problems and a very low arrest rate. The Vegas vibe kicks in and people just want to have fun!

On another note, Las Vegas is finally earning the “sin city” reputation and catching up with New Orleans, Key West, and other places where women trade a “look at these” for beads.

I find most hotels on the Las Vegas are way too expensive now, considering most people put a lot of money in those machines slots, poker, etc. which rarely pays, and also the restaurants, & buffet are more expensive than before, so we have decided to go somewhere else and found downtown (Fremont St.) has a lot to offer and we win more often there and leave with more money in our pockets than on the strip.

Manyáare writing me and saying how they are rediscovering downtown and the Fremont St. Experience (Fremont St. Experience photos). Generally speaking, the rooms are less expensive, the food cheaper, the drinks stronger, and almost all the casinos are along the four blocks of Fremont St. so you don’t wear your shoes out casino hopping.

You can enjoy fine dining with a great view at The Plaza’s Center Stage Restaurant or go nuts with the Golden Gate’s 99 cent shrimp cocktail (no lettuce filler). Plus, it seems like there are always drink specials somewhere down there. We love downtown!

Our sympathies to out to the family and friends of Imperial Palace owner Ralph Engelstad, a controversial figure known for his tough exterior but soft heart. We reviewed the Imperial Palace Auto Collection a couple of years ago. This is truly a time for “changing of the guard” as Plaza Hotel owner Jackie Gaughn is selling the Plaza, Las Vegas Club, and Gold spike to an investment group which figures to bring new life (and capital) into these downtown properties.

As “snowbirds,” my wife and I winter in Las Vegas. It’s not quite as cold as Wisconsin. Last winter, while surfing the internet on my laptop, I can across a mention of the $4.95 steak dinner special at Ellis Island. We decided to try it, and were very pleased with the results.

You have to ask for it, as it is not on the menu. You start out with a LARGE salad. Everything is fresh and crisp. Rolls and butter are brought out, and, by the time you finish the salad, the steaks are ready. My wife, having worked in restaurants all her life, was a little apprehensive about the steaks, because at other places we’ve been to the steaks were either a little over or under done.

These steaks were perfect-just the way we ordered them. The steak was (is) about 1-1/2 inches thick, and tasted great. Along side was a large baked potato, and green beans sprinkled with minced garlic. A beverage is also included. We have returned for dinner several times since, and have always had a “perfect” meal. Whenever anyone visits from back home (Milwaukee) we always take them there at least once.

Try it, you’ll like it.

This is one of the great Las Vegas specials, and I enjoy it myself. A reader on our message boards asked about this special, and we thank Dave for his answer with a great mini-review. Ellis Island is located just off The Strip. Take Flamingo east to Koval (1/2 mile) and make a right. You can’t miss it on the left. Craps is my favorite game. In fact, I could play it 24 hours a day if the money holds out. It is fast moving, never boring. If I play using some common sense, I can usually make my money last, I even have left a winner–something I rarely do with the slots. My favorite game is quarter craps where you can bet in increments of quarters instead of dollars. Don’t get me wrong, I still put my money on the table, I can just spread it out more.

Thanksgiving – is this week in the United States. Many gather with family and friends … and then head off to Las Vegas for a four day weekend. Others just head here for the holiday. If headed here and worried about getting a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, don’t fret. Almost every hotel restaurant from the buffet and coffee shops to the fine dining rooms serve up a traditional seasonal feast.

New Year’s Eve – is going to be huge again this year. Confirmed. Eight minutes of fireworks from the top to bottom of The Strip! Local KLAS TV has an online video story about this year’s events. NFR – National Finals Rodeo hits town again this year from December 6-15. If you are country, like country music, or even just like to wear a cowboy hat, this is your time of year to be in town. The lounge bands are kicked out of town for country acts, and it is hard to spot anyone not in country garb. Plus, you can’t miss the famous Cowboy Christmas Gift Show.

You don’t need to have rodeo tickets to come enjoy Las Vegas country-style. Plenty pack the town just for the atmosphere. Almost every hotel shows the rodeo on the big screens and has bourbon and Coors Light specials. We’ll be out at various events filming and photographing for everyone who can’t make it. 2002 Billboard Music Awards – Ever wanted to go to a big awards show? Many of today’s best musicians and entertainers will present and perform during The 2002 Billboard Music Awards. The show will broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena Monday, Dec. 9 at 5 p.m. Scheduled performances may include Avril Lavigne, Creed, Faith Hill, Justin Timberlake, Nelly and the St. Lunatics, Kelly Clarkson and Puddle of Mud. Scheduled presenters at this year’s event may include JC Chasez, Justin Guarini from the American Idol television series, LL Cool J, Master P and Lil’ Romeo, Nick Carter and Snoop Dogg.
