Hello From Las Vegas! – What I call Summer Part I (what most of you call springtime) is upon us. The next two weeks call for highs in the high 70’s and 80’s, although (as it typical of April), you can expect some wind here and there. Although, remember my recent members column on which months were the most (and least) volatile regarding weather noted that April is often very unpredictable, and often windy. Rain is not completely uncommon (although it seems like we had our share of rain last month).
Beware Of This Sneaky Table Game Modification! – A new trend in an old table game is starting to creep its way into Las Vegas Strip casinos. If you don’t know what to look for, you won’t know that you are playing this “new” version. Yet, the new version takes nearly 3% more of your money (on average, per bet, the house wins more money, more often), then the old version.
My members-only column this week is a report on this new variation of a popular table game, how you may not ordinarily notice the difference, and specifically what to look for so you don’t get burned by these bad new odds against you. These tables currently have no shortage of players, because your average player has no clue they are playing at a high-hold (for the house), bad odds (for the player) table.
PS We are not talking about 6-5 blackjack. That is old news, and should be avoided as well. This is a new twist on a popular table game that will drain your wallet quickly, and simply leave you thinking you had a run of bad luck.

There’s no shortage of tacos Downtown. You can cruise down Charleston for a late night swerve to Tacos El Gordo, pop into Pinches while your runts run around Container Park or round up your squad for a Tuesday special (and scorpion shots) at Nacho Daddy.
With four NCAA Division 1 conference tournaments calling Las Vegas their home this week, its fair to say that the city has become one of, if not, the premier city for men’s basketball conference tournaments.
My work brought me to Las Vegas recently, and like any self-respecting degenerate, the first thing I did when I got off the plane was run straight to a sportsbook. The Masters is on the horizon, after all.
Though Mother Nature hasn’t received the memo, it’s pool season in Las Vegas. Three new pools, surfing and action-packed movies are among the options for water-loving partyers. If you plan to be among the early visitors, know that daytime highs this weekend are forecast to range from the mid-60s to the low 70s.
Hi Ted, It’s been a long time since I’ve written you and a few years since my last Vegas trip, but now I’m thinking about coming back again. And I have a couple of questions:
1. I usually stayed at the Mirage because of the great pool and the close proximity to Casino Royale. I like craps but hate to see minimums higher than five bucks. I enjoy playing the game and understand gambling well enough that I expect to eventually lose a bit or maybe break even. If I come out ahead of course, that’s ideal and a fine surprise. Are there any other casinos that have reasonable craps minimums maybe downtown? I probably will stay at the Mirage again, but with Uber, I can expect to get out and about, more than I used to do when I rented a car or taxi.
2. Resort fees, yuck! Are there any other hotels that can come near the beauty and fun of the Mirage pools, waterfalls, etc., that DON’T charge ridiculously high resort fees? I haven’t tried any off-strip hotels, but might, if they can come near to the atmosphere of the Mirage pools.
Thanks for your continuing Vegas news, I’ve read for many years.

– I still love The Mirage (and Bellagio). Love the Mirage atmosphere and location. The only bummer is that although built by Steve Wynn, it is owned by the nickel-and-diming, fee imposing MGM Resorts corporation. But, you’ve discovered the joys of Casino Royale across the street. Where the limits are still low and the drinks are still cheap!
Generally speaking, you’ll find the limits you want there. However, with the advent of Uber, you are correct: There is no excuse NOT to go downtown. You’ll find plenty of $5 craps and blackjack tables. If it is a super-busy weekend night, you won’t find them everywhere. But, you’ll find them pretty much somewhere.
El Cortez is a super-fun place to shoot dice, and because of their location and “regular guy” clientele, they have to keep the limits down. Main Street Station is highly suggested as well. And, don’t overlook the completely renovated Cal, where you can gamble with always-fun Hawaiians.

Ohio winters can be bleak. The endless, gray, dreary days tend to take a toll on one’s psyche. By February, central Ohioans are counting down the days – or weeks – until spring. Thankfully, there is a way to beat those winter blues: traveling to a warmer climate. Las Vegas is a great winter getaway.
