Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Christmas was sunny but on the chilly side. We hope you and yours had a great holiday. New Years Eve is in the air and slated to be another huge year. Winds permitting, The Strip with light up with fireworks from the MGM to Stratosphere. The Plaza downtown is putting on their own fireworks show at 12:30 AM as to not conflict with the massive celebration taking place under the Fremont Street light show canopy.

Local TV station KLAS has streamed the fireworks show live in years past. No indication if they are going to do so this year, but you can try their link just before midnight Pacific and see.

It is unfortunate that most of you can’t watch the full 2-3 hour coverage that our local stations do. Short of being here in person, there is really no way to describe the excitement and festivities. The ball drop in New York City is about as exciting as watching paint dry in comparison.

The networks would love to do New Years from Las Vegas. The problem? Midnight on the east coast is only 9 PM here, a time when the party is barely getting started.

Do you have a few people you missed giving holiday Best Wishes to? Co’mon… we all had a couple of people we heard from that we didn’t get a card or note to. It isn’t too late: Pick one of the great holiday photos from our Bellagio Gardens Christmas 2007 Pictures area and send it as an E-Card right now!

Flying Etiquette – Delta Airlines has created a number of short online videos about air travel etiquette called Planeguage. Frequent fliers will find them all too humorous. Those that fly less regularly will enjoy the travel tips.

Mac King Is Everywhere – If you’ve been to Applebees during this season and had kids with you, odds are they were handed a “Holiday Hocus Pocus” with crayons and a little color book with simply magic tricks kids can do. Your local Applebees may still be handing them out. Give them a call and take the kids!

He’s also put out a couple of cool products perfect for kids (of all ages) who want to have fun with magic. Mac King’s Great Big Book-o-Magic contains over 50 very cool (and mystifying) tricks that are easy to learn and available at Barnes and Noble (stores or online). Also available is his Magic In A Minute Truck-o-Tricks with monkeys, cards, balls, strings and other props, jokes, and gags. Available at toy stores nationwide or Mac King Magic Shop. We just may be giving some sets out in the near future.

Also, you can’t go wrong checking out Mac’s afternoon show at Harrah’s. By far the best bargain and a show everyone will enjoy. Check out Mac King Tickets

New Las Vegas Photo Sets – We took a trip down Las Vegas Blvd. South recently. And we mean South. Starting at the west side of the airport at the Las Vegas sign… and heading SOUTH. Everyone is watching the massive construction on The Strip, but the next wave of resorts, gaming, and development is already in planning and progress. Get a good look now. It won’t look like this much longer. (Click photo for complete photo set)

We also added a few photo to reflect the remodeling and upgrades at the Golden Nugget. (Warning… these were taken in early fall when the weather was still very warm. Don’t bring your swimsuit this time of year).

Passing along a couple of “must know” tips…

  • Skip the casino ATM fees. You know that pulling money out of a casino ATM is obnoxiously expensive. Fees for casino ATM’s are approaching $5, then your bank hits you for another few bucks. The solution? Buy something negligible at one of the drug stores along The Strip and use your ATM debit card to get cash back. A pack of gum or bottle of water will cost around a dollar (cheaper than any ATM fee) and most stores will give you up to $100 cash back. This also may work at the many independent sundry/liquor stores. We haven’t tried it yet at hotel gift shops, but never hurts to ask if they will give you cash back with a debit card.

Do all fellow readers a favor: If you find a certain hotel gift shop or independent sundry store on The Strip or Downtown that lets you use your debit for cash back, drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com and we’ll start creating a list for all members to access.

  • Avoid the car rental traffic jam. The new car rental facility guides everyone out of the building and sends them south on Gilespie, west on Warm Springs, then north on Las Vegas Blvd. The problem? An almost constant traffic jam once you turn on to Las Vegas Blvd. because you are just south of where it intersects with our Beltway freeway and a major shopping area.Simple solution? Make a left turn out of the car rental lot. Take that road (Gilespie) north until it ends at Sunset. A quick left (west) on Sunset leads to Las Vegas Blvd. and you just zoomed past the entire traffic mess. Google map of suggested route. You’ll save yourself 10-15 minutes. We know. We use this shortcut all the time doing our local business in the area.

This was taken on Jan 14th 07 – the Tropicana’s water fall, yes its frozen. It was real cold the entire 4 days we were there. We were married on the 15th. The other picture is of the Stardust (well the sign) I know it came down a few weeks later.

Enjoy the pics!
Sandy & Steve

Thanks for the great photos! I saved them for the end of the year because losing The Stardust was certainly a big story of 2007. Also, a good reminder for people coming during the winter: It is sunny almost every day here, but not always warm. Average highs for January are 57 degrees, but average is the key word. As this newsletter goes out, we are facing 2-3 days where the low will be around freezing.

(Note to self… dig out really warm coat). Bring on summer… I so hate the cold…

Well I never made it to Vegas this past weekend. My daughter was sick and I felt I couldn’t leave her, but she’s fine now and it wasn’t serious. I have to say that South Point was great in that they didn’t charge me the requisite 1 night cancellation fee. The rest of the group went so I thought I’d let you know their reviews. They had good things to say about the hotel. The staff at the hotel were very pleasant and check in was no problem. They had reserved King beds and were given double beds but when they called the desk, she promptly found them rooms with Kings and also all on the same floor next to each other. The rooms were spotless, and huge. The casino wasn’t smoky and the pool was good. The only complaint about the pool was it could’ve been a little more secluded. Maybe more lush greenery(ala Mirage pool). The Del-Mar Deli was good and the breakfast buffet was good…especially at $6 with the discount coupon.

The liquor store on-site was a hit with reasonable prices. There is construction going on but the men in the group actually enjoyed watching the crane doing it’s thing while they had cocktail in hand by the pool. They used the shuttle to and from Mandalay Bay frequently, but the complaint was that it stopped running too early. They got tickets to Love. 2 from the group thought it was absolutely the best show they’ve ever seen, the other 4 thought it was just good…not being huge Beatles fans and there was also a 45 minute delay due to technical difficulties.

They did a Red Rock Jeep tour which they all enjoyed. They had dinner buffets at the Mirage and Bellagio with Bellagio getting a slightly better review than the Mirage based on food quality. Dinner at Canaletto at the Venetian was just OK…the food and also a less than pleasant waitress. However, they thought the surroundings were great, along with the gondola ride they took. They spent a little time in the bar at Kahunaville which they thought was fun. And one person won $250 on a slot machine at Bellagio with a $5 chip they found on the floor. So overall they had a good time with lots of laughs -and I was home wishing I was there.

So, thank you for all your info, and I will be checking out the newsletters and planning my trip whenever that may be…hopefully sooner rather than later. Take care!

Denise

Denise had asked about the South Point and ended up not being able to make the trip with her group, but she did report on the experience her group had and we appreciate the trip report!

As our daughter is in Graduate School at UNLV, my wife and I (we live in San Diego) consider Las Vegas our second home (Love Las Vegas and the people). Having mentioned that, I would like your help.I have a birthday coming up and will be in town to celebrate. I have been looking at many of the hotels gift shops for a embroidered black silk jacket or something else, that has the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign that is on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love the newsletter and look forward to it every week. Keep up the excellent work.

Regards and thank you for your help in advance.

Paul Wittmann
San Diego, CA

Heck of a question. I’m not sure I’ve seen one. The Las Vegas sign isn’t trademarked, so anyone can use it or variations of it. The hotels pretty much want to sell only stuff with their name on it. When in town, I’d check the Bonanza Gift Shop… it is huge. You might find something there.

Also, you may try Ebay. Try a search for

las vegas jacket

or similar.

Hope this helps!

I would just like to say what a great magazine you have, It is really great to read and it brings back at lot of memories as we came to Las Vegas last year and the year before.Keep up the good work.

Thank you,

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Last week was very hazy here, as a result of the massive California wildfires. Although it made for some beautiful sunsets, the smell of smoke was definitely in the air. Southern California sends a significant percentage of visitors to Las Vegas every year because of the proximity and I imagine we have many, many readers who were either directly affected by the fires or know people who were. Our thoughts are with all of you.

As many of you have seen on the news, long-time Las Vegas resident Robert Goulet passed away earlier this week. Those not familiar with his long career as a performer and singer might know him more recently from his Emerald Nuts commercial.

Goulet was one of a handful of world-renowned entertainers who actually made Las Vegas his home. Even some of the more famous names that perform here regularly at most often just rent a home or stay in a hotel suite just for their run. Jay Leno (Tickets) and Barry Manilow (Tickets) actually fly home every single night. (Yes, Barry Manilow is reported to fly in from his home in Palm Springs every single show. Up to five nights a week).

More importantly, he was involved in the community and extremely well-liked. Our local paper had these two articles:

Lots of reports that Barbra Streisand is coming out of retirement for the opening of Planet Hollywood in a couple of weeks. That is all we know. Do I care? No. Will we let you know more when we know more? Of course!

The redesign of the cocktail waitress uniforms at The Rio (featured in our October 17’th newsletter with photo) prompted a story in the Image section of the Las Vegas Review-Journal about some of the more sexy cocktail outfits in Las Vegas. You can read it (with photos): Ultra-Revealing

The Frontier (officially known as The New Frontier) will be imploded Nov. 13 at 2:30 a.m. This date appears to be very firm. If you have never witnessed a Las Vegas implosion, this may be your last chance in years. With the economy slowing a bit and construction already in progress throughout the next few years schedules on various projects (CityCenter, Frontier replacement, Palazzo), there doesn’t appear to be any new massive scale projects on the horizon that will require implosion of an existing structure.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for a great Newsletter, I get loads of useful and accurate information from AccessVegas.com.

I’ve had eleven holidays in Las Vegas in the last ten years and it gets better every time.

I took this photo of the Stratosphere last September, it’s not my favourite, I’ve got a great one of my husband eating a Fatburger!

Roll on Christmas day, we’re going again for two weeks!

Regards,

Steph Hansen (Salisbury, UK)

Dear Ted,

Thanks again for the latest newsletter. We’re always waiting to get the latest news. All the infos are really useful – regarding our last stays at Vegas. And we’re looking forward to our next visit (next year).

Greetings from Germany,

Oliver and Diana

Coming to Vegas. My partner is a country music fan. Any place in Vegas with country music please? Also, could you recommend any day tours outside Vegas (not very expansive)?

We did Grand Canyon last year. We are also very interested in the Monument Valley, but we know its too far from Vegas to go there. Is there anywhere with something similar to Monument Valley nearer to Vegas or the Colorado River?

Thank You,

Franrow (screen name)

Ted Responds:

The only thing really “country” left on The Strip is Toby Keith’s Bar and Grill at Harrah’s. The people running Gilly’s (formerly at the soon-to-be-imploded) Frontier have opened Stoney’s Rockin’ County. The good news is that it is huge, fun, and you don’t have to be a country fan to enjoy it.

The bad news (for tourists) is that it is down on the “new” South Strip about 7 miles south of Mandalay Bay. To get their on the cheap, you would take The Deuce (public bus that runs The Strip) all the way to where it ends at the South Strip Transfer Center, then transfer to Bus Route 117 for the rest of the ride. Links for this:

Per your tour questions, in 2008 we plan to do much more tour coverage. Many don’t think about the amazing scenic opportunities that are so close to Las Vegas! For those looking for great prices on a huge variety of area tours, we suggest visiting our partners at Travelnice: Travel Nice Tours Page

Let me suggest the following tours (in descending order of price) that may fit your interests:

Hope this helps. Have fun!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Starting next week, we move to publishing this newsletter weekly, in the mid-week to help get you through those mid-week blues at work.

Amy Raynor-Cooley is stepping into the position of doing all the newsletter prep and editing (she already has been playing a significant roll) and Mark Jacobs (yes, that is his name… no relation to the Marc Jacobs stores) is taking over sifting through the huge amounts of news sources we monitor and link to each week so we bring you just the news of interests to tourists or people with second homes here.

I’m not going anywhere! I’ll still be the last person to touch the newsletter before it goes out, be doing final edits (seeing how many typos I can slip in), and have Newkirk’s Notes.

I’ll also be supervising a significant expansion in the content of Access Vegas, a couple of brand extensions, working more closely with the hotel/resort properties to bring you more deals and contests/giveaway (yeah)! Plus, I really want to get back to the podcast. That was a lot of fun. So… as the saying goes: You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

Capozzoli’s burned down. Who, what? Capozzoli’s was a legendary Italian restaurant near The Strip on Desert Inn and a hang-out for the who’s who of wise guys and “wanna be” wise guys over the years. You could walk in there at 4 in the morning and get an incredible, full meal with great food and service back in the day.

The past decade often saw Tom Jones (with friend Cook E. Jarr) in there dining, drinking, and crooning with the house band until sunrise. Here’s the story (includes streaming video): Long-time Italian restaurant Capozzoli’s burns to the ground

First, I think you have a great news letter.

I just finished reading this weeks news and saw an article about a strike. When is this suppose to happen? I have reservations for Main Street next month.

Thank you a response,

Susan

Ted Responds:

Odds of a strike are slim to none. We have not had a major strike since the Frontier Strike of the early 90’s. Most Strip resorts have already signed new contracts and it is expected that every property will come to a new labor agreement.

If you do have some concern (anything can happen), you may want to cancel. However… consider that someone is always talking of striking. Airline people, you name it. The odds of it affecting one particular person’s vacation anywhere are minimal. Employees prefer to keep working until a new accord is reached.

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 4 — Real vs. Internet – with Victor H. Royer. Of course, if you are players such as myself, who has first learned to play poker in the real world, because at the time that we were so learning there not only weren’t any computers, but the world of the Internet had not even been conceived, sometimes it may be difficult for us to transition from the real world to that of the Internet. Fortunately, I am not that old as to be technologically challenged in this way, and I have actually found the world of technological innovations, and lately the world of Internet poker tournaments, to be exceptionally beneficial, interesting, entertaining, and actually quite profitable as well. Anthony Cools – The Uncensored Hypnotist

Reviewed May 7, 2005
By Amy Rayner-Cooley

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be hypnotized? How about in front of a couple hundred people whom you then proceed to entertain for the next hour or so with the “suggestions” given by the hilariously funny Anthony Cools – The Uncensored Hypnotist? Let’s just say I’m glad that “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

Anthony Cools The Uncensored Hypnotist Paris Las VegasMy friends and I went to see Cools perform at Paris Las Vegas for “Girls Night Out” and we could not have asked for a better show to see. It was so funny and my friends laughed so hysterically, they cried. I wasn’t quite as privy to this hilarity at the time, because I was elected in my group to be one of the volunteers and was therefore part of the entertainment.

The show started off with a disclaimer announcing all of the four (and more) letter words that would be used during the show, and to get out if you didn’t like to hear them. Anthony Cools isn’t known as The Uncensored Hypnotist for nothing. Cools’ raw, razor-sharp adult comedy will leave you laughing the rest of the night. Click to read the complete review …

Matt Dusk – Is back in town, hotter than ever with an extended run at the Golden Nugget. The reality show The Casino on Fox didn’t fare to well in the ratings, but it brought Mr. Dusk to the attention of the public. He was interviewed this last week on Vegas Talk Internet Radio Show (you can click and listen to the archived show) and check out streaming audio and video of him at MattDusk.com

Vegas In The Morning – Elvis’ Music Is Back! – The next chapter of the life of Elvis in music has begun. Fate has recently summoned literally the entire Elvis Presley “Hit Making Team” back to the recording studio to continue the King’s music legacy. American singing sensation John Krondes and The Jordanaires have joined forces with the Presley “Hit Makers” in a monumental music project that has left music fans worldwide shocked and stunned. Edward Lozzi of Edward Lozzi Associates Public Relations in Hollywood, CA has called it a “Historic Moment”, one of the greatest Hollywood stories seen in years.

As Elvis had said in song, “Miracles I Guess Still Happen Now And Then.” This fans is our miracle. For the first time since the King’s death in 1977, the Presley “Hit Makers” have now answered fates call to return to the studio. The Elvis Presley “Hit Making Machine” is back in place with John Krondes and The Jordanaires in the recording studios of New York, Nashville, Las Vegas and Los Angeles creating “Original” new music with some of Elvis’ original composers for what music experts are now calling the beginning of a new Era in Music.

Vegas In The Morning puts even more of Elvis’ Hit Making Team together. The Sweet Inspirations join John and the Jordanaires on this rockin’ party song. (That’s the Jordanaires’ timeless bass, Ray Walker, belting out those bottom vocals.) Vegas In The Morning was written as a salute to Las Vegas’ 100th birthday by John and his long-time co-writer, Paul Evans.

With the full cooperation and participation of the Elvis Presley Estate, his electrifying yet tumultuous story — from his humble beginnings to his meteoric rise to fame — will be told. Presley’s master recordings will be heard in a biographical film for the first time.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers (“Bend It Like Beckham”) stars as Elvis Presley, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winner Camryn Manheim (“The Practice”) stars as Gladys Presley, Golden Globe Award-winner Randy Quaid (“LBJ: The Early Years”) stars as “Colonel” Tom Parker, Rose McGowan (“Charmed”) stars as Ann-Margret, Robert Patrick (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”) stars as Vernon Presley and Antonia Bernath (“Living Neon Dreams”) stars as Priscilla Beaulieu Presley.

Hoover Dam Deluxe VIP Tour
Comedy Bus Tour

By Ariane
Bio and Contact Info

Up for an afternoon of comedy, education, history, sightseeing, nature, art, homemade food, fudge and unlimited fun? Then sign up for the Hoover Dam Deluxe VIP Comedy Tour! This 6 hour tour provides the adventure of the Wild West, and much more!

You are treated like a Vegas star from the very beginning! Your day begins as the tour bus conveniently picks up from most major Casinos. Leaving Las Vegas, you ride in plush comfort through the desert on the way to Hoover Dam. During this time, you will be entertained by a nationally known comedian that is also your tour guide! You never know who it may be! Fun games are played on the bus and secret surprise bags are handed out.

Once at Hoover Dam, exit the bus and begin your walking adventure. The tour guide takes you from the Arizona side of the Dam to the Nevada side, and narrates the “History in Dam detail”. Stops along the way include a walk across the very top of the dam, where you will look 726 feet over the edge, and stand directly across a 53 foot wide tunnel!

The sheer size of it all is breathtaking. On the Nevada side, there are many beautiful Art Deco sculptures, a sundial, and a map of the solar system to the precise moment when the Dam was dedicated. There is also a visitors center where to buy souvenirs or snacks. Picnic tables are nestled among towering canyon rock walls, for tourists to rest and enjoy the best of what man and nature have created.

Next up is the nature tour … on the scenic overlook of Lake Mead right outside Hoover Dam and Boulder Canyon. View Antelope squirrels burrowing on the mountain sides, see the largest man made lake in the world, and trails that lead to old mines where men searched for treasures of the earth. You also get an education about an experience with the desert stinkweed plant!

Lunch is at Matteo’s, located in the Historic Boulder Hotel. The food is homemade, and the service is great. The pasta is a recommended favorite! After eating visit the upstairs Museum and learn more about the history of Hoover Dam, see a movie, and a photo exhibit of the men who made the Dam a reality. Last stop is down the street to an Old Fashioned Fudge shop for some sinful samples!

On the ride back to Sin City, you will view stunning celebrity mountain homes, and take a drive through the neighborhood consisting of the actual “dingbat homes” built for the workers of Hoover Dam. The tour guide continues with more Las Vegas history, insider secrets, and a few other surprises. The rest you will just have to see for yourself!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Highs this next week will be in the 60’s (F) and the cold and snow in much of the US doesn’t look like it is letting up soon. Can’t say I’d trade places with those of you snow and icebound, but this is a great time to get away to Las Vegas and warm up.

Our pick for the best Super Bowl party this Sunday? AladdinÆs Big Game Party features gorgeous Hawaiian Tropic models, a chance to win $100,000, giveaways … oh, the game on huge screens.

Valentine’s Day – is right around the corner. Easy for us guys to forget (hey, Super Bowl is on tap, NASCAR is starting … ) and if you didn’t measure up last year, take her to Vegas this year and all will be forgiven. Plus, it falls on a Saturday so the odds are you have the day off.

Rooms aren’t going to be cheap on short notice, so use our expert advice that we give for New Year’s Eve bookings to nail that Valentines room in Vegas. She’ll be the envy of her friends (and you get to go to Vegas)!

Best Kept Secret – Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is among the best kept secrets in Las Vegas … and it is free! Home to a flock of live Chilean Flamingos, African penguins, swans, ducks, Koi, and turtles populating the grounds, this is a favorite of ours to unwind or take someone for a romantic walk. The carefully tended gardens, tropical plants, and waterfalls are amazing.

You can find the habitat at the Flamingo Las Vegas by heading back in the direction of the buffet. As noted, this is free and open to the public. Not visiting soon (or want a sneak peek before you get here)? Click to view our Flamingo Wildlife Habitat photos!

Roy Horn Update – Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn is progressing very well, according to Las Vegas gossip columnist Norm. Click to read the details

Speaking of … word is that Siegfried and Roy will be replaced with a Cirque Du Soleil show. That combined with the Cirque style show Celine Dion – A New Day and a Cirque style show scheduled for Wynn Las Vegas, and the one soon to come online at the MGM Grand will bring this unique show style to seven different venues.

Will supply outstrip demand? Probably not as these unique, high-end productions are sensory delights that make a lifetime impression. If you get a chance to see Cirque du Soleil shows O, Mystere, or Zumanity, grab it. Tickets are constantly in high demand.

NASCAR Weekend – Las Vegas NASCAR Nextel and Busch ticket packages including great seats and first-class hotels, plus our insider transportation tips to get you to the speedway quickly! Click for Las Vegas NASCAR Weekend DetailsSuper Bowl Parties Updates – Many of the hotels throw lavish Super Bowl parties, and if you can’t make it to Houston, you need to be in Las Vegas on Feb. 1, 2004. Check out the growing list of Las Vegas Super Bowl Parties.

Martin Nievera – Word is out that this Philippine-born entertainer is singing up a storm downtown at the Golden Nugget. We had to miss the press preview(I had the flu) but look forward to seeing him soon. In the meantime, don’t pass up this talented entertainer bringing back a taste of “old Vegas” with a new touch. Click for Martin Nievera show info

Streaming Video Golf Lessons Part 6: Impact – We’ve teamed up with Revere Anthem Golf Club Director of Instruction Chris Eastman (in conjunction with ChefLive.com) and put together a series of eight streaming video golf tips.

Chris starts with fundamentals like aim and grip, and works through some of the finer points of the game. This week: Lesson 6 – Impact. Click To View All Streaming Lessons

Lawry’s The Prime Rib

By Barbara Hendricks and Robert Waller

Lawry’s The Prime Rib is at first glance an elegant, simple and well known eating establishment. Located on Las Vegas’ famed “restaurant row” just a mile from The Strip, Lawry’s dramatic Art Deco design, rich woods and vibrant colors welcome you into a setting that has an extraordinary feeling of warmth and elegance.

The dÚcor is tasteful but doesn’t scream snobbery. The staff is very well trained and many have been with the company for decades. Their helpful nature and hospitable attitude defines the culture that is Lawry’s.

Let’s talk about the food. Wow! Bring your appetite. Good size proportions, and the entire menu from salads to entrees, and (of course) deserts are excellent.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! I screwed up last newsletter. I failed to note that Celine Dion had just announced the opening of her new show at Caesars and that limited tickets were going on sale. How could I make such a huge error? She starts performing … drumroll … hold your breath for this one … March 25, 2003. Don’t worry too much about ticket availability. She’s performing in a 4000 seat theater and word on the street is that she’ll have a tough time selling it out every night.

Please, no hate mail. We aren’t taking a swipe here. Just telling it like it is. We are excited to eventually see the new show and think the attention it focuses on Las Vegas is fantastic. We wish her the best and will be talking much more about the show as March 2003 gets closer.

DINING AND RESTAURANTS – We’ve just completed an overhaul on our dining page! Restaurants are now listed by hotel, each with a brief overview and note of cuisine. We’re also proud to announce a partnership with Las Vegas based http://www.cheflive.com to provide in-depth dining reviews which will be available starting next newsletter. Visit our new dining page at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-restaurants.htm

BEST OF LAS VEGAS – We have a winner in last month’s “Best Luxury Hotel” readers poll. Bellagio came in #1 with 38% of the vote, Venetian at #2 at 27%. No surprise there but the race for third place was very tight: Caesars (10%) edged out Mandalay Bay (9%). See, your vote does count. This months poll is “What is the best place to view Las Vegas?” Go to http://www.accessvegas.com and get your vote in! A future category will be “Best Buffet.” Email nominations and suggestions to (click) mailto:allvegastv@aol.com

MORE PHOTOS – We continue to add photos to our Las Vegas photo section! Over the past two weeks, we’ve added photos for Bellagio (including the fountains), Venetian, Aladdin, and Caesars Palace hotels. Grand Canal Shoppes and Forum Shops. Caesars Magical Empire. Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire. Go enjoy all the new photos at http://www.accessvegas.com/cgi-bin/IFPro/imageFolio.cgi

MEGABUCKS – finally hit! Johanna Heundl, a 74-year-old retired printer from Covina, CA won the $22,618.156.67 jackpot at Bally’s on May 27’th. She decided to run $100 through the machine on her way to breakfast. When that was gone, she decided to give it one more shot with another $100 bill and hit with 23 credits left on the machine.

HOTEL STRIKE – A handful of smaller properties (mostly downtown) have yet to reach an agreement with the union and a July 1 strike is certainly a possibility at those hotels. The union wants the same deal the major Strip hotel workers got. These mostly older and less profitable hotels feel they can’t afford the demands.

Although word is that replacement workers are ready to go, you may wish to avoid booking these hotels until the dust has settled (either with a contract or with replacement workers getting into the groove of their jobs). List of possible affected hotels at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotel-strike.htm

SELF-GUIDED TOURS – We are pleased to endorse two new recorded driving tours that let you enjoy the scenic wonders just a few miles outside Las Vegas. Travelog has put together driving tours of both Hoover Dam/Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon. Being familiar with both of the routes, I listened to them and was please with these professional, in-depth tours.

Each tour comes with both CD and cassette as well as a detailed tour map. The narration goes into significant and helpful detail for each area you are driving through. If you want to explore the beauty of the Desert Southwest, these are well worth the money. And for those who don’t have a car when visiting, we continue to offer one of the largest selection of guided tours available for our area:

COMEDY, TRICKS AND NAKED CHICKS – starring Fielding West is moving up to an 8 PM time slot at the Bourbon St. Hotel Casino (1/2 block off The Strip on Flamingo). If you missed our review here a few months ago, it is archived (with photos) at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/fielding-west-las-vegas-shows.htm

THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER – This popular “girls night out” male cabaret revue from Australia has moved down the street from New Frontier to Excalibur. Ticket info at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=372&cityid=1

CHICKEN TIC-TAC-TOE – The Tropicana is giving people a chance to play tic-tac-toe against a chicken for the chance to win $10,000. We were unable to attend the press premiere today but will check it out soon. The promotion will go on for at least one year and is modeled after a similar Atlantic City promotion.

SOUL OF MAGIC – Producer Will Roya continues to bring affordable afternoon entertainment to Las Vegas, the lastest being Victor and Diamond. This magic duo primarily uses a background of jazz music to enhance their unique illusions. Among many accolades, Victor and Diamond have been voted the best act for television by NHK, the Japanese Broadcasting Association. They play at 2 PM Saturday through Tuesday at the New Frontier (formerly The Frontier, just north of Treasure Island and Fashion Show Mall) and the price is right: $14.95 which includes two drinks.

FOOD SPECIALS – Arizona Charlie’s (both locations) is offering a 14 oz. Porterhouse Steak Special for $6.95 in the cafe available seven days a week from 5-10 PM. Here at AccessVegas.Com we have heard your feedback. Many of you drive in or fly and rent a car and stay at the many hotel/casinos around the Vegas Valley. We will be covering more events at many off-Strip hotels. For those who never set foot off of The Strip, don’t worry: We’ll continue to have you covered.

ZAX – is the new “contemporary continental” restaurant at the Golden Nugget. With a modern feel and lunch starting at $10 it looks to cater to the downtown power lunch crowd as well as visitors who want a nice lunch experience. Dinner is also served, starting at $18 and including selections like Mojo New York Steak, Knob Creek Honey Salmon, sushi, pizzas and pastas, hot and cold deli sandwiches and more.

SUBSCRIPTION “DUES” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows, and tours through http://www.accessvegas.com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by forwarding a copy to them and suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

SHOW REVIEW:

“O” by Cirque du Soleil – How do you really accurately describe the most stunning sunset you have ever seen? A majestic snowcapped series of mountains out of an airplane window on a clear day? Modern marvels such as Hoover Dam or the Golden Gate Bridge? No words do them justice. This is my challenge as I try to describe Cirque du Soleil’s “O” at The Bellagio.

Las Vegas hotel visionary Steve Wynn was going to build Bellagio and was dead-set on making it the most spectacular hotel in the world. He had already partnered with Cirque du Soleil to bring the fabulously successful Mystere to his Treasure Island hotel. But Bellagio needed a show that would top what was already the most spectacular show in town. Out of that vision and desire, “O” was born.

“O” is performed on a stage that is water. A 25 foot deep, 1.5 million gallon, 150×150 ft. pool with hydraulic stage sections lets the 81 member cast alternate between standing on dry land, “walking on water,” swimming, and even spectacular dives. No canned music here — live musicians create the soundtrack. A $70 million theater gives the utmost in creature comforts from the seats to the climate (maintaining a comfortable environment despite a room focused around a body of water). And, all that attention to detail before the first performer entertains.

Be in your seat 15-20 minutes early as they suggest. We don’t want to give anything away … except to say that the warm up sets the mood for the show. Once the curtain drops, we are treated to synchronized swimming. However, this isn’t the Olympics. These world class performers do it in a way to set the stage for this journey that links fire, earth, air, and water.

Cirque du Soleil is a name obviously derived from circus, and I’m not talking about the pink casino at the North end of The Strip. The next act featured twins who performed a spellbinding duo trapeze act above the pool while enveloped in the music and atmosphere of this spellbinding production. The journey continued.

Imagine if you will gymnastics performed on water. Gymnasts who spring, twist, flip and turn on an island in a remote sea, able to spring themselves into the water and then back to land again and again to display varied acrobatics. Imagine a steel framed ship high above water where aerial cradle acts and gymnastic parallel bars coming together to create a mesmerizing spectacle.

Imagine island-inspired, fire-based rituals that you may have seen on vacation in Hawaii or on television, brought to life in a slightly twisted concept, and incorporated into a human fire stunt the likes of which you may never see anywhere else. This right before your very eyes. Imagine performers entering the theater from all angles to take part in an aquatic celebration of love and life.

The depth of “O” is like that of a great movie. As spectacular as the circus-inspired performances are (far more than I’ve listed), and as amazing as this unique room is, this show is deeper. “O” is theatre. It has quiet moments and special characters that bring life’s most intimate quirks to our attention. It has activity not just for the sake of activity, but because different people are drawn to different things. You may see an entirely different show than the person sitting next to you, but you both have seen a show to remember.

For those wondering, the show is well worth the $100-plus ticket price. If you’ve never splurged on an extravagance such as this one, and if you never do it again, do it just this once. You won’t be disappointed. You’ll probably want to go back. I know I do.

“O” by Cirque du Soleil plays at Bellagio. “O” sells out night after night, and well in advance. This is one show worth planning your entire visit around. For current times and ticket prices, please click http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=3&cityid=1 and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability.

Try to book well in advance. Play with different dates (the beauty of online reservations). If no tickets are available during your next visit, you can call Bellagio when you arrive and find out how to wait in the standby line. Tickets set aside for high rollers and other invited guests sometimes go unused. Please understand that standby is first come, first served with no guarantees.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! After I sent out the last issue (April 6, 2002 – available in archives) I headed downtown to Fremont St. to have the Binion’s late night steak. (Whaddya think … I fly in to do this stuff? I’m live in Vegas 24/7)! Saw a print ad shoot for the new 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo right there next to Binion’s and the Golden Nugget, and yes they had the car out there. Bright red, with a blonde model sitting in it. You never know what you will see in Las Vegas!

Speaking of, Binion’s has reopened their original coffee shop downstairs from the casino after using the upstairs buffet area as a substitute for the past couple of years. They still have the full steak dinner for $4.99 from 11 PM – 7 AM and well worth stopping in for.

We are making a publication change. Nothing startling. This present twice-monthly, mid-length format has been unbelievably well received. However, breaking hotel specials and updates happen more than twice a month. So on the “off” week from the full newsletter, we will send our new Access Vegas Update:

A quick, simple one page bulletin of late breaking specials and updates to help you with your Las Vegas vacation planning that you can read in a matter of minutes.

E! MODEL SEARCH – Were we at the Maryweather / Castillo fight Saturday night? Maybe Tiger Jam? Heck no … E! invited us to Rain Nightclub at The Palms for the one of the casting calls of E! Wild On. They are looking for a replacement for Wild On host Brooke Burke. Hundreds of women from all over the West coast were interviewed in this hot new nightclub. Full details and info on coming casting locations at http://www.eonline.com/On/Wild/HostSearch We’ll try to keep you posted for when this casting special airs. In the meantime, E! airs all of the “Vegas Showgirls: Nearly Famous” episodes back-to-back May 4. Check local listings for time.

MAN OF 1002 VOICES – I’m proud to be one of the first touting comedic impressionist Larry G. Jones right here in this newsletter, and his accolades keep growing. The Las Vegas Sun (afternoon daily) just said “If you can’t afford Danny Gans go see Larry G. Jones.” That must be put in perspective as Gans’ tickets start at around $80. Jones’ talent is right up there and it’s nice of Fitzgeralds to offer this show at a one drink minimum. More info is on Jones’ site at http://www.lasvegasacts.com

For all the people who say there are no good deals left in Vegas … go enjoy Jones (Tue. – Sat. at 5 PM upstairs at Fitzgeralds), $1.25 beers at Las Vegas Club, 99 cent shrimp cocktails at Golden Gate, see the free Fremont St. Experience light show (top of every hour after dark), then finish off the night with Binion’s $4.99 complete steak dinner. Where else can you get a night of entertainment and food for less than a $20.00 bill all within 4 blocks?

GRAND CANYON – Contrary to popular belief, the Grand Canyon isn’t at 20 minute drive from The Strip. If you drive, you have just begun when you hit Hoover Dam (45 minutes from The Strip). Hence, we don’t suggest bus tours unless you want to spend the majority of your day on a bus, only to see a small corner of the Canyon. And save Hoover Dam for a visit when you can spend an hour or two enjoying it.

We do suggest helicopter tours and are proud to continue our affiliation with Maverick. We could have gone with anybody, but Maverick is simply the best. Unlike many companies quoting bargain prices (then tacking on substantial “taxes and fees”), Maverick quotes you the entire price right up front. They have the best safety record, most comfortable ASTAR Jet Helicopters, and they fly further and deeper into the Canyon.

Your vacation time is very valuable and seeing the Grand Canyon is worth doing right. Many of the concierges at top area hotels call Maverick first. Check out the Maverick difference at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/maverick Like a good restaurant, Maverick flights fill up fast and early so consider booking online in advance of your visit. If you call, make sure to mention promo code “Access Vegas” to get our special rates.

FREE POOL PARTY – Join 105.7 FM Wednesday nights for Smooth Jazz at the Whisky Sky Bar by the pool in the Green Valley Ranch. The Oasis’ Gwen Abbott will be your host and have lots of Oasis prizes as well. Wednesday, May 1 features Turning Point including Native American, and Middle Eastern dancers. Wednesday, May 8th, Gregg Karukas will perform. His single, ôNight Shift,ö just spent two weeks at number one on the national Smooth Jazz charts. Parties are scheduled to continue on Wednesday evenings and the view from Whisky Sky Bar must be seen!

CABBIES – Just a reminder: Las Vegas cab drivers get kickbacks from various shows, clubs, strip joints and more. If you ask to go somewhere, they often firmly try to persuade you to go somewhere else by telling you that your selection isn’t as good. Also keep this in mind when asking them for general advice on what to go, see, or do. We have a host of show reviews online at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com so check with us first and make up your own mind!

CLINT HOLMES – launches his third year at Harrah’s. They have christened the showroom as the “Clint Holmes Theater” and it is a well deserved honor. He continues to rack up accolades with his mix of contemporary, pop, jazz, and calypso selections that make up a complete, fantastic performance. If you are sitting there going “who” or just wondering about his show, please read our archived review at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/clint-holmes-las-vegas-shows.htm

TRAVEL TIP – Sun Country airlines has resumed service post 9/11 and are hubbing out of Laughlin, Nevada (90 miles south of Las Vegas) on the West Coast. If you are traveling between cities they serve you’d be wise to check out their fares. Using Laughlin as a hub is a great cost-saver because of the isolation of the area (little air traffic or military airspace to dodge which means less time in the traffic pattern).

Sun Country serves Minneapolis, Laughlin, Orlando, Ft. Myers, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas (from Minneapolis only), Denver, Seattle, Portland, and Dallas. Their number is 1-800-359-6786.

CELINE DION – Yes, she is coming for an extended run at Ceasars. Yes, she is already living in town. Yes, the show is said to be moving along well. No, we don’t have a launch date for it. Yes, we will let you know the minute we know and make tickets available.

TYSON / LEWIS FIGHT – isn’t going to be in Las Vegas. Memphis, TN gave it the green light. If you’ve never experienced a big fight live you can check out fight package pricing and availability at http://www.thereservationcompany.com/trceppricing.cfm?amid=143&eventid=3

MESSAGE BOARDS – A big thanks to those who are starting to participate and help fill up our new message boards. This is the place to post any questions you have, then post your comments when you return from Las Vegas! We already have some great people giving comments and I’m in there ever few days to help answer questions as well. Come visit and post at http://boards.accessvegas.com

SHOW REVIEWS:

MIDNIGHT FANTASY – Las Vegas seems to have a topless show on every corner now. The old standbys like Folies Bergere and Jubilee have it as part of a bigger production. Crazy Girls makes it the centerpiece of a bawdy production. La Femme features the “artistic value.”

Midnight Fantasy has taken a different angle. There is just about as much topless time as can be squeezed into a production show, and even the comedian jokes about it being a “t*ttie show.” However, the Midnight Fantasy title doesn’t describe male fantasies, but female fantasies.

Each vignette starts with narration setting up a scene of a breathless female fantasy that is played out through choreography, staging and costumes. Although the limited stage keeps the props to a minimum, this actually works as fantasy is more about the mind and acted out by the dancers.

They have avoided the traditional “showgirl” look, instead paying great attention to the unique and provocative wardrobe worn by the dancers and cast. Red leather chaps and cowboy hats, rhinestone bustiers, filmy negligees and business suits are a few of the elements that add to the storyline. As the fantasy story heats up in each vignette, the costumes become more revealing.

I’ve got to hand it to the cast which features vocalist Charidy Sullivan LaFontaine, dancer / impressionist Sean Cooper, and comedian John Padon plus nine beautiful dancers. When there is a weak spot, whether with the main performance or the specialty acts, it can bog down an entire show. LaFontaine has a nice voice and connects with the audience on a solid level. The crowd fell in love with Cooper, who’s comedic impression of Tina Turner was memorable, as was his entire routine.

John Pardon had the standard “Vegas” jokes mixed in with quick-paced comments on life. While no Andrew “Dice” Clay he does use some adult language. But like he said … “Hey … what do you expect … you are at a t*ttie show.” The cast of dancers and choreography was strong throughout the performance, something not always expected from a mid-priced show. Because the show delves into female fantasies from a woman’s prespective, Midnight Fantasy is a fine couples show (provided the lady is comfortable with this subject matter to begin with).

Midnight Fantasy is a production show running nightly (dark Monday) at the Luxor hotel. Pricing and advance reservations available at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=197&cityid=1
