Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! We are running late this week, and my how time flies when you don’t know what you are doing. I could blame it on the very unusual bitter cold. Most of the United States was slammed by unusually cold weather, and we were no exception with lows in the 20’s (F) for a week.

Truth be told is that we’ve been hard at work implementing the first stages of a major upgrade to the look, feel, and usability of AccessVegas.com. The first step was to get all of the computer stuff running faster, and you should especially notice the difference. Remember the frustrating, incredibly slow wait for some of our news stories and message board posts to appear? Fixed. Click away on all the links with no more waiting time!

Where Is The Podcast? – Not a week goes by without people writing and asking when we are going to revive our podcast. I’m flattered that the demand is still there (the last podcast was in July of 2006). Here’s the deal: I’m (unfortunately) not just a figure-head CEO. I’m actively involved in all aspects of AccessVegas.com including our soon-to-debut major upgrades, and there are only so many hours in the day. Our projections are to have the upgrades done by April, and that should free up time to get back to stuff like the podcast.

In the meantime, I recently did an intro for the Living In Las Vegas Podcast in celebration of their one-year anniversary! Living In Las Vegas is a really fun, informative podcast by a couple who moved here a little over a year ago, and talk about the entire process from buying a home, to landscaping, to getting around town, what they go do and see, you name it.

If you want to hear my intro, you can check out Living In Las Vegas #38 but I highly suggest starting with Episode #1 and listening to them in order. Then you’ll understand what I am yapping about!

The Calendar Giveaway has ended. We’ll be notifying the winners by email this week. If you want to jump the gun and peek to see if you won, go back to our December 20, 2006 issue and click on the entry links (which now display the winners). That was just a taste. We are already lining up more cool giveaways! (Hint to PR people: Contact us at allvegastv@aol.com so you can get in line to promote your clients with some stuff for our readers).

Enjoy This Issue!

Gambling Talk: Poker Is Not Gambling — Part Two – with Victor H. Royer. A successful and steadily profitable poker player should never allow himself or herself to experience such highs and expose themselves to such lows. Making steady profits in poker, regardless of whether you are playing professionally, semi professionally, or only casually, requires you to have discipline of mind, body, and soul, and in particular the ability to avoid becoming angry over bad beats, or becoming overly exuberant in times of great good luck and good fortune. Ted, I thought you might appreciate the “Emerald City” effect, the morning it had snowed. My daughter and I are early riser’s (4am) and by the time we got out she took some really “wicked” shots. We have a few more, but I think this was the best at showing the low ceiling clouds and the reflection.

Have a great New Year, and keep, keeping us informed. I enjoy your letter,

Thanks,

Chet

Ted Responds:

Chet,

Thanks for sharing such a great picture! One of the very rare and special sites in Las Vegas is when we have low clouds (and even more rare fog), setting this scene that so few get to see.

Attention Readers: Don’t be shy about sharing some of your great Las Vegas photos with us. Simply drop them our way at allvegastv@aol.com so we can share them with everyone.

Ted,I was in Las Vegas from Dec. 14. thru Dec. 18. I had a great time and will definitely return in the future.

I found the people friendly, the hotel and service workers very friendly, and the quality of the Paris Hotel to be excellent. It was a great time.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Our best wishes to Celine Dion who is taking some unscheduled time off to recover from a severe respiratory virus. She’s taking the time needed to heal and rest in anticipation of her 2007 gigs at Caesars. We have Celine tickets on sale through June of 2007, and her replacements (Cher and Bette Midler) have already been signed. If you have been putting off seeing Celine or want to catch the show again, do not delay in getting tickets now. Celine Dion Tickets

The rumble for New Year’s Eve is heating up in a huge way and as now is the norm, $500,000 worth of fireworks will be shot off from hotels all the way up and down The Strip. If being inside at what are sure to be the hottest club parties on the planet, you need to be snapping up tickets or making your bottle/table reservations now. ASAP.

The huge party is the Nightclubs.com Party at the Empire Ballroom and we have that and information on all the New Years Eve Las Vegas Nightclub Parties or we’ll have people on hand to personally help you with the 411 if you call 800-696-5721.

We have a new section for links to stories about the smoking ban at the end of our usual news story links section later in this issue. For those who just want an executive summary:

A judge has temporarily halted enforcement of the new rules until a hearing on the constitutionality of the law has been heard. The anti-smoking forces who wrote the law exempted casinos (nobody would want to take on that fight). But in doing so, the law may unfairly discriminate against the local bar and grills all over Las Vegas (which are essentially min-casinos).

Mayor Oscar Goodman makes it no secret that he loves his martinis. So much that he’s going to teach a one-credit class at Community College of Southern Nevada this February on how to make the perfect martini. (No, this isn’t a joke). Gotta love Vegas!

If you are thinking of coming for New Year’s Eve, it’s time go book. Now. Room prices will only rise, and tickets to the hottest events are already starting to get very tight. We have a ton of links and information in this issue, and as always, your best bet for hotel reservations is Las Vegas Hotel Deals.

Gambling Talk: Playing Big Pairs in Tournaments — Part One – with Victor H. Royer. Over the next series of articles, I am going to ask you to consider some of the big pairs in Poker and how you should (could) play them in poker tournaments. As odd as this may seem, there are many different ways in which you can (or should) play big pairs, including pocket Aces. This also includes hands like Ace-King.

Many players think (feel) that these are the kinds of hands that play themselves. While it may be OK for you to play like that at home, that’s not what you should (ought) to do in poker tournaments. Even big pairs like Aces aren’t always candidates for the same kind of consideration, and most certainly so for poker tournaments. So, here we are going to explore some of the possibilities, and some of the reasons for them. Click to Read Complete Article

Readers Write:

Really enjoy the newsletter, finding it very informative.

The thing that bothers me, is, all the old names are dying. The Dunes, Sands and Hacienda have all been razed and the property rebuilt upon with the new properties having new names (not a bad idea when it comes to the Hacienda).

Now it’s Stardust. I used to be a frequent guest and would much rather it retain it’s name, rather than the proposed Echelon Place. This property isn’t changing ownership so a name change will do nothing but distance former patrons.

Thanks

Jim O’Hara

Chicago

Ted Responds:

Having lived here since 1993 (long enough to get used to the actual hotels you are referencing), I couldn’t agree more. In a few more years, most newer visitors and new residents will probably think the street names “Sands” and “Desert Inn” were some cute street names thought up by home developers.

I am pleased to see that Tropicana Ave. will continue to lead to The Tropicana for now (the upgrade of the property by new owners at this time doesn’t appear to involve a name change).

However, I do wish that Venetian owner Sheldon Anderson had done something more to let The Sands name live on (outside of keeping the convention center so named). It would be nice if the Encore addition to Wynn Las Vegas had a “Desert Inn Lounge” and similar with Stardust.

Couple of interesting quick notes:

  • I was among the first to note what a lousy, stupid name Echelon Place is, a comment that is echoed by many local pundits. They still have time to change it and I hope they do.
  • Of all the names you mentioned, The Hacienda actually lives on. A small hotel/casino between Boulder City and Hoover Dam now has the name, as a result of some of the former Hacienda parent company owners being involved the hotel by Hoover Dam.

Bottom line: The new Vegas is exciting, but some connections to the past would be welcome. If anything, the vibe people of all ages come here for is the swinging times that were originally made famous by the Rat Pack.

Hi Ted,Love reading your column. My friend and I (both in our 60’s) stayed at Wynn Resort recently. It was fabulous and spoils me for staying anywhere else! I have been going to Vegas since the 60’s and used to stay at the Sands…..then Harrah’s. By the way, what have they done to Harrah’s? We loved Rita Rudner’s show but the casino was awful and used to be so nice and low-key.

Thanks,

Sara

Ted Responds:

Harrah’s has “cranked things up a few notches” over the past few years to achieve a party atmosphere to attract a younger crowd. But that does raise some interesting questions to our readers near or in their retirement years:

1. With so many hotels wanting to be “hip” and cater to people barely old enough to drink, what hotels do you no longer visit, and more importantly, which hotels do you love and feel very comfortable at?

2. Now that are are at (or near) retirement, do you come to Las Vegas as much as you used to, more often, or do you feel that Las Vegas isn’t so much your cup of tea and don’t visit so much? If not so much, where else are you going on vacation (gambling city or otherwise)?

We have set up an area of our message boards for you to weigh in:
Is Las Vegas Still OK If You Aren’t 21?

Please remember: Our message boards are sometimes running slow during peak times. Please be patient: The pages will appear and you will be able to read and post after a few seconds.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! All kind of stuff this issue including some very recent photos of construction along The Strip including Palazzo Tower at Venetian, Encore at Wynn, and Trump Tower.

We have listed the Coming Hot Holidays for 2007. Now is a great time to plan your trip and book a room, especially if you want to come when things are really happening! You know the drill: the longer you wait, the more you’ll generally pay. Plus, it is always good to know that a Vegas trip is on the horizon!

Just when I thought we were done with the smoking issue, it lights up again (pun intended). Because the ambiguous wording of the ballot anti-smoking ballot measure passed by voters, McCarran (Las Vegas) Airport is going totally smoke free to error on the side caution and and a couple of hospitality companies have sued to get a temporary restraining order against enforcement of the new laws, citing the lack of fairness. )Here’s a link to the story Legal challenge targets smoking ban).

In a nutshell, here is the situation: Most bars in Nevada are not simply bars, but bar and grill type operations with a full-fledged restaurant serving a complete menu (bigger menu than most sit-down chain restaurants) 24/7. This law now prohibits smoking in these bar and grill operations. However, the law permits smoking in casino gaming floors, which often have restaurants sitting right next to (and in many cases open air to) a smoking permitted gaming floor. Laws can’t unfairly target one business but not another, and that is the basis of the lawsuit.

I was ready to let this issue drop, but have been pelted with email on both sides of the issue, and it has started to lean more to a smoking debate than a “smoking in Las Vegas” debate.

I’m doing this: Down in the Members Mania section, I answer a representative letter, and I give a couple of suggested resources for follow up to those strongly pro or con on this issue and a suggestion about how either side can take further action, as we will not continue to cover this issue outside of the specifics of the specifics on the smoking ban effect on Las Vegas visitors. If you don’t care, don’t worry: This issue is jammed with other great information to keep you up on what is hot and happening in Las Vegas!

Special Note: Last week, we had a coding problem which kept some of our readers from being able to click through to the following offer. The link is working now working and we have extended the offer one more week:

Next to the crystal blue Mediterranean, her wedding day anxieties, life’s ideals, along with her desire to discover who her real father is are belted across the showroom in powerful song. When her two friends stumble into the scene, drunk with pre-marital madness, it becomes obvious- this show is no circus act; here’s a story to which everyone can relate.

Mandalay Bay is the proud home of the longest running and most successful full-scale Broadway musical ever to play on the Las Vegas Strip…Mamma Mia! With a total of 11 global productions, the show has managed to attract over 27 million people worldwide. And with good reason- the content of the show holds something special. It’s adventures into real-world family issues and life’s less than perfect idiosyncrasies, for audience members just, well, hits home. Click to Read Complete Review

Gambling Talk: Three Card Poker – with Victor H. Royer. Poker made simple. How easy can it get? Well, how about taking five card stud, and seven card stud, and all the hold’em games and reducing the “worry” of what to make out of these cards to just three cards total. Actually, it’s quite brilliant. Of course a few rule alterations need to be made. For example, a “straight” is now higher than a “flush”. And, there’s NO royal flush … just the “straight flush” for the top award. The rest of the card hierarchy remains (somewhat) the same: pair, then the flush, then the straight, then the three-of-a-kind and then the straight flush. Click to Read Complete Article

Vegas Photo Set Of The Week: Grand Canyon – No matter how many times you have come to Las Vegas, you haven’t seen it all until you’ve seen the magnificent natural wonders of the Grand Canyon. For years, we have endorsed and enjoyed Maverick Helicopter Tours and the spectacular views their Grand Canyon Tours provide.

Avoid the bus tours, where you spend your entire day (and then some) traveling over bumpy back roads for only a short time at the canyon. Maverick flies you over directly and quickly and your time is spent viewing the Grand Canyon from above and down inside. Some tours even allow breakfast at the bottom of the Canyon!

Ted Responds:

As always, we post info in the newsletter as soon as it come in on everything we hear about. Every week, we get people asking about coming events, holidays, implosions, and similar.

The simply truth is that the hotels rarely plan (or release plans of) events more than a few weeks ahead of time. Sometimes we are lucky if they get the information to us with days to spare!

I very much realize that many of you plan your trips months in advance (which is wise), and could use the information earlier. For some reason, casino event planners seem to think that if word of the event makes it to the local newspapers and TV stations with a few days to spare, all is well. In reality, we are reaching far more visitors and reaching them much earlier… while they are still in the early vacation planning stages.

I know we have a huge number of industry people reading this, and maybe they will take heed. Bottom line for us: We don’t keep info from you. If we have it, run it.

Dear Ted,My husband and I will be visiting Las Vegas towards the end of March 2007 and I subscribed really so that I can find out what types of shows will be on then and if there are trips to the desert at that time. I also wanted to know what the climate is at that time as it will be your spring but I know that the desert temperatures are far more severe both in heat and cold. I live in Australia, so I only know about Las Vegas what I have seen in film and read in the media.

Thank you.

Penelope

Ted Responds:

We have a weather page with the average temps and weather advice that should be helpful.

Per shows and events and stuff, please see above reply.

Bottom line: If you want a headliner entertainer like Elton or Celine or similar, book as early as possible. Use the search box on our shows page: to see what is playing while you are here..

For concerts and similar, just keep watching the newsletter. Some concerts and headliners are only booked a couple of months in advance.

April is about the most perfect month to visit, except a little windy and college spring break here brings more collage age students to town (but not over-run by them).

Thanks for reading!

Dear Ted,The people of Nevada have spoken and I applaud them for their wisdom. You conveniently fail to mention in your editorial that exposure to cigarette smoke has been absolutely proven to be a major health hazard. Banning of smoking in public places except for adults only, gaming areas is a terrific compromise. Why should I be forced to make a decision to expose my children to carcinogens or otherwise decide not to go anywhere in Las Vegas?

I would never take my children through a casino, but must I make the difficult decision to take them shopping where they may be exposed to chemicals that could affect their future health? Parents may choose to do this but they should not be forced to compromise the health of their children in order to enjoy the freedom of public access. Smoking is legal and any smoker should have the right to smoke, but I should equally have the right to a healthy environment in public places.

David and Eileen Hardy

Ted Responds:

Because most of the feedback regarding the smoking issue has gravitated away from smoking in Nevada to the general issues regarding second hand smoking, I’ll make a few notes and then direct you to where you can make a difference (pro or con). Keep in mind that I am a non-smoker who does not hold tobacco company stock, and we have no tobacco-related advertisers.

Much of the anti-smoking arguments either cite the Surgeon General’s report, or talk about “saving the kids” from second hand smoke.

1. No one will refute that smokers put themselves at significant risk for early death. But per second hand smoke, the Surgeon General’s original report was based on significant false (junk) science. A 1993 EPA meta-analysis of 30 studies has since been discredited, and ignores a World Health Organization large single study that showed a reduced association for children of smokers and no association for spouses and co-workers.

The largest single study (British Medical Journal) was a 39-year analysis of over 35,000 Californians published in 2003. It found no connection between passive smoking and mortality. Even in the smokiest of smoke-filled rooms, nonsmokers inhale only a fraction of one cigarette of exposure. Many EPA approved workplaces expose people to more carcinogens on a daily basis than being in a room with a smoker.

2. I’d like to ask those “saving the children” how often their kids eat a fast food? Trans-Fats are devastating, and while I don’t want laws to ban them (like smoking, the market should decide), I no longer touch them.

Want to have some fun? Go to McDonald’s Nutrition web page and look at the amount of fat (let alone trans fat) in their fries and some breakfast sandwiches, things that many parents don’t think twice about feeding their children. How many parents are up-in-arms about a few whiffs of cigarette smoke, yet have children whose arteries are are clogging before they even hit their teen years?

New York City just voted to ban trans-fats. I don’t agree with that. What is next? You may support a ban on smoking, may (or may not) support a ban on trans-fats, but how will you feel when government regulation of your job or legal rights comes under fire? Wait until the shoe is on the other foot.

Keeping kids away from smoke is simple: Don’t patronize establishments that allow smoking. As a non-smoker, there are times when I choose an establishment without smoke, and other times I choose to enter an environment where smokers will be. None of those environments I choose to enter are places that children absolutely have to be.

Whether you agree with me, or you think I am completely out-to-lunch, let me suggest an entertaining and informative recent segment from radio station WFNY 93.7 FM in New York City. Leslie Gold (aka The Radio Chick) did a really interesting segment on this topic, including mention of smoking in casinos: Click To Listen

In the meantime, here’s the smoking situation for visitors to Las Vegas: Smoking is permitted on casino floors, your hotel room (if a smoking room), and anywhere outdoors. It is not permitted in any restaurant or bar that also serves food. It is permitted in nightclubs and other bars and lounges that do not serve food. Smoking is now prohibited in all parts of Mccarran (Las Vegas) International Airport. (Note: This is in absence of the pending lawsuit which might delay enforcement of this law. As we go to press, we don’t yet have word on the outcome).

Finally, if you support or disagree with the new Nevada Smoking rules, I strongly suggest writing a letter to the editor of our main paper, Las Vegas Review-Journal. I’m thrilled with our volume of readership and the many people in the gaming and hospitality industry that read us each week. However, the mainstream politicians, judges, and voters that voted to ban smoking are more likely to read the editorial page of our city paper.

You can email Letters To The Editor of the Review-Journal at

letters@reviewjournal.com

You must put your address (including city, state, zip, and/or country) and a phone number. They reserve the right to edit or shorten letters, so letters under 900 words are suggested.

Let us know if they print your letter (pro or con) and we’ll note it and link to it here! You know that we’ve always been happy to echo our reader feedback whether it agrees with our editorial stance or not.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Running just a little bit late this week. We published a couple of days late last week to include the ramifications of the election results, and that tossed us a little behind for this week. We’ll be back to our usual mid-week release soon.

With so much “serious” coverage of everything happening in Las Vegas, we sent Larry G. Jones – The Man of 1002 Voices to the grand opening of the residential preview center for Project CityCenter (across from the Aladdin, south of Bellagio) for a more humorous look at this huge new project. Lots of stuff so I’m going to get out of the way quickly this week. We’ll have an expanded reader response section in the next couple of newsletters to address some common questions we frequently get.

Hi

myself, my wife and daughter have planned a trip to Las Vegas from England for the Christmas period (23rd to the 28th December), I would like to surprise them with a stretch limo when we arrive at the airport for the short trip to the Luxor, can you recommend a good Limo company?.

regards

Stewart, Gillian & Charlotte

Ted Responds:

We work with a company that only contracts with the top, more reputable and reasonably prices limo services and you can check out all the details on our limo rental area.

I agree that there is no better splurge, and it is more affordable than people think. No cab lines (or cab rip-offs with them talking you the long way), you can enjoy an optional 30 minute tour of The Strip (highly suggested), and there is nothing like pulling up in front of hour hotel in a limo.

In two years, we’ve had many words of praise and no complaints. Hope this helps and enjoy the trip!

What exactly is covered in the smoking ban? Can we still smoke in hotel rooms? The article mentioned malls. In Chicago we can smoke OUTSIDE but not inside. If, for example, I go to Fashion Show Mall, am I still allowed to smoke on the outside perimeters? I’m assuming we can still smoke in all casinos, correct? Quite frankly I’m fed up with all the no smoking rules. These idiot politicians should go after the bad guys instead. Was always happy to land in Vegas several times a year because we still had our freedom.By the way, I love your newsletter. As a person who loves Vegas and tries to keep up with the news, it’s a tremendous help. Have a great holiday.

Susan

Ted Responds:

The extent of the ban and how it will be enforced is yet to be seen.

A court had already decided that if measure 5 passed, it wouldn’t apply to hotel rooms. However, that won’t stop the proponents from trying to put that into court again.

Outdoor smoking is always permitted.

The politicians didn’t pass this. A vote of the people of Nevada did. Two many newcomers from restrictive states that legislate when and how you can even burp have moved here and want Nevada to be just like their home state. If their state was so great, they wouldn’t have moved here.

Side Note: I can’t count the transplants I have met who complain, complain, complain about living here. Everything from lack of bike paths and parks to not being able to get a “decent” pizza. But funny, you see them months later and they are still living here.

Back to the issue: I’m a non-smoker who and no one has ever put a gun to my head to go into a bar, club, or other establishment that allows smoking.

To those who are all for legislation banning smoking in businesses instead of letting the business and free market decide (I.E., a non-smoker choosing to patronize only businesses that are smoke-free), think about the move underfoot to restrict various unhealthy or fast food. Or booze. The shoe won’t fit so well when it is on the other foot.

By the way, smoking will continue to be allowed on the casino floors and the bars in casinos. If anything, this is going to cause people to do more smoking on the gaming floor area since they can’t smoke in restaurants, hallways, convention areas and the like. Hence, backfiring on those who approved of the ban in general hoping for a smoke-free gaming experience.

Will those of you recent transplants to Nevada who don’t like our “live and let live” attitude toward vices please move back home and quit trying to change Nevada? What is next, a last call for serving booze?

Hello there,Can anyone help us?

We are coming from England in February to the scooter rally at the Gold Coast hotel (Vespa’s, Lambretta’s ect) and have been trying to find out if we can hire a Vespa or Lambretta for our stay? Any ideas?

Thanks

Keren and Roy Russell

Ted Responds:

Great question, and with the demise of the Boardwalk (and the exotic car rental place next door to it), I honestly don’t know. Any reader suggestions to us at allvegastv@aol.com would be appreciated. Beyond that, best I can suggest is a web search on it.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! One more month of summer left, but we are in the middle of a weird “cold” snap with highs barely reaching 100 F with the same for the next 7 days. We hope those of you in “warmer climates” dealing with the record U.S. heat wave are keeping cool.

Fall and football are just around the corner, and while it may be hot where many of you live right now, cool fall temperatures will soon come. October is a great month to be in Las Vegas. Temperatures are moderate (under 90 F), pools are still open, sports and sports betting are in full swing, and the weather is perfect for outdoor dining. Visit our friends at Las Vegas Hotel Deals and check out their discount rates for your fall Vegas getaway. Remember, prices only go up as rooms fill up, so booking early is the way to go!

Had an long, interesting talk with a local cab driver which I’ll go into in our next podcast. Changes are in the air as Vegas cab drivers realize how bad of a reputation they are getting. More and more people are taking shuttles or limos around town just to avoid being ripped off. Don’t take our word for it. Check out this very recent article from our local paper: Old Vegas lives on in shady cab acts.

The cab driver I talked to (and many others) are starting to get fed up with their colleagues who are screwing people over by taking them the long way. Perhaps we’ll see positive changes in the future.

We have a jam-packed newsletter so I’ll get out of the way and let you…

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Plenty of hot new information this issue. A couple of regular features are missing due to the July 4 holiday, but we never halt bringing you tons of great Las Vegas information. Read on!

Imperial Palace Update – A number of you wrote in saying “I have reservations later this year at the Imperial Palace and am worried what will happen if they close it sooner!

I contacted our friend Rhonda at I4Vegas (the company that handles the reservations if you use the booking box search on our site). She said this:

“I’m sure they will know a closing date so far in advance that existing reservations will not be affected, but should that be the case, you would be given comparable or upgraded accommodations at no additional cost. Just for your information, they do also own Harrah’s, Bally’s, Flamingo, Paris and Caesars all in that same area of the Strip.”

Note: This is from our travel partner and applies to those of you who have booked the Imperial Palace through our booking box or Imperial Palace information page here on AccessVegas.com. We can not speak for any other travel company.

If you didn’t make your reservations with us, you may wish to contact the customer service contact with wherever you made your reservations to find out their policy. We try to be as helpful as we can, but if (for example) you buy an Acura and you have a concern, it won’t do you any good to ask the people at the Lexus dealership. My point: We can’t speak to the policy of other companies.

For those who do make any type of reservation through our travel partners using the main booking boxes on AccessVegas.com, we are always more than happy to help. We choose the companies we associate with very carefully. Provided you book with one of our travel partners, always feel free to drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com with any concern and we get right on it!

Kimo’s Vegas TV – Our good friend Kimo Akane is a native Hawaiian and a Vegas expert. The CityCenter of attention – MGM Mirage unveils model of its $7 billion mixed-use megaproject – As Bill McBeath sees it, the last thing Las Vegas needs is another hotel-casino. And on Monday, McBeath, president and chief operating officer of MGM Mirage’s Bellagio, showed media and gaming-industry watchers just how far beyond the traditional Strip-resort concept his company is going with its $7 billion Project CityCenter. Standing over a model of Project CityCenter inside an office on the construction site, McBeath pointed out the 66-acre development’s variety of components: In the back, up against Frank Sinatra Drive, a 60-story, 4,000-room hotel-casino with a curved, contemporary design will dominate the project’s skyline. An ebony condominium-hotel tower with 1,543 units will flank the hotel. Click to Read The Full Story …

Exclusive Ritual Treatments Add Cultural Flavor to Grand Spa OfferingsMGM Grand Spa recently introduced three signature ritual treatments. The new options join the popular Australian Aboriginal-inspired Dreaming Ritual to provide guests with an extensive menu of exclusive, indulgent global experiences that combine modern spa treatments with ancient cultural flavor. Rituals can be enjoyed either as a private journey or as a couple’s experience. All rituals include a private hot steam session and a Swiss shower.

  • The Dreaming Ritual — 120 Minutes – $295
This original signature ritual has received acclaim and loyalty among Grand Spa guests for years, making it their most popular signature service. The Dreaming Ritual is a tribal-inspired service that begins with a foot soak and proceeds into an exfoliation, body-mask and scalp treatment with indigenous healing elements from Australia. This profound experience is made complete with an Australian Aboriginal Massage. You will feel both deeply relaxed and deeply renewed.
  • Japanese Yuzu Ritual — 100 Minutes – $265
Yuzu, known as Japanese grapefruit, is rich in organic acids that aid in pain relief, improved circulation and skin smoothing. This refreshing ritual begins with a yuzu body scrub, followed by a choice of a sake or white tea body wrap and a Shiatsu scalp massage. Both sake and white tea are known for their anti-oxidant properties. Finally, unwind with a 50-minute Shiatsu-Combination Massage performed with yuzu body butter.
  • Amazon Rainforest Ritual — 100 Minutes – $265
This healing ritual begins with a plantain and cocoa powder body scrub. A healing and moisturizing body wrap, featuring the native South American herb “Una de Gato,” used for many years to stimulate the immune system and to reduce inflammation, follows. A rejuvenating foot massage is provided during the body wrap and the service ends with a 50-minute rhythmic massage using cocoa butter or passion flower oil. This service is sure to release any tension you might be carrying.
  • Turkish Hammam Ritual — 100 Minutes – $265
This treatment originates from the Turkish Hammam, a spa tradition dating back thousands of years, popular throughout the Mediterranean region. The ritual begins with a scrub made from Turkish coffee grinds and brown sugar blended with crushed walnut husks and fragrant cinnamon and cardamom. The body wrap that follows contains coffee extract, which will stimulate the tissues for cellulite reduction, along with milk proteins, aloe and seaweed to help nourish the skin. Enjoy a scalp massage during the body wrap before beginning a final vigorous, deep pressure massage, performed with orange or lavender body butter.

Hi Ted,

I truly enjoy the newsletter. I am curious about 1 thing though – does everyone try and get something for nothing in Vegas? I love Vegas make no mistake. I have played everything from penny slots up to and including black and purple checks on the craps table. Other than drinks, I have never ever taken a comp for anything. Nor do I intend to.

I come to play – not collect freebies. Last thing I want is some casino toadie looking over my shoulder offering me a room or a dinner. I gamble to gamble. I don’t want gifts – I want to be left alone. If I want a suite, I’ll pay for it.

All I want is a room where I get no phone calls, no one bothering me and no distractions. I’ll buy my own dinner thank you. If you are comping me dinner to the gourmet room, chances are it will be more crowded than anyplace I want to be. Let me alone and I’ll win or lose 5 figures, try and comp me and I will walk out the door. Just my nature,

Dicedoc from Chicago

Ted Responds – Thanks for reading! No question that many want to enjoy all the freebies they can, although it comes at a price to a higher limit player such as yourself. They want to track your play, get your home address, cell phone number, run your credit and practically name your first born in return for the higher level comps (free suites, fine dining, top show tickets all on the house).

That comes with a price. Your new “best friend” is the casino host at the place you frequent. It is nice to have them inviting you out to Vegas all the time with the comps, but in reality it is their job to get you locked in. Visiting only their place as often as possible while keeping you away from the competition. In addition, two risks come to mind:

  1. Comps are not actually free. They are based on your play. The more money you are likely to lose, and the more often you come and visit (creating more losing visits in the big picture), the more stuff they give you. But it is only a fraction of what they expect you to lose over the course of your many visits.á

  2. Familiarity breeds contempt. For years, I had a friend come to town and toss some pretty serious money around playing at one of the major Strip properties. He only stayed there no matter what. Over time, he noticed that his treatment wasn’t as good as it used to be and the comps weren’t as generous. What should he have done? Taken his action to other hotels, told them he was a longtime Hotel X customer but he wanted to see what they could do for him. They would have rolled out the red carpet! But alas my friend felt obligated by his “friendship” to the host of Hotel X and just kept visiting and being disappointed.

Note: Hotel hosts are not nor every will they be your friend. Their job is to get you to visit often enough to separate you (over the years) from as much of your money as possible. And they succeed because since you want to keep your comp level up (and keep the freebies and their “friendship” intact), most people tend to gamble more than they normally would have.

How much more? When all is said and done, they gamble away more to stay in the host’s good graces than it would have cost just to buy the suite, buy the fine dining, and buy excellent tickets to a show (fight, whatever) from a broker!

This is not a blanket condemnation of casino hosts or those of you who gamble lots of cash and expect good comps. Just remember that it is you against them, and plenty of competing properties want your business. Your host does his job, which is to try to keep you happy. But your job is to be a smart customer, not afraid to take your business across the street in search of a better deal (better treatment, more comps).

Many choose to go Dicedoc’s route: No pressure from the host, no pressure to gamble a certain number of hours per day, no pressure to stay at only a certain hotels. And for those of you that gamble at the higher levels, this might be a great time to review what’s going on. Are you happy with your host? Have you had some bad losses trying to put in the expected number of hours where the money would have better been spent paying for your suite and only gambling when you feel in a “lucky” mood?

I’m not here to take sides. Have nothing against casino hosts. Use them wisely if you use them. Just reminding all our readers who play higher-end to that you have many options.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Fall has settled in and the air is sunny and clear after a couple of stormy weeks. Big announcement this week is our Trip Report Giveaway:

The winning doesn’t have to stop when you get back home! You came to Vegas. You probably had a blast and told all your friends about it. Hey, we’re your friends too and fellow AccessVegas.com readers would love to hear all about it!

Two great ways to win when you post a Las Vegas Trip Report to our Trip Report Forums:

1. Every person posting a trip report during a calendar month will be entered into a random drawing for a Green $25 Casino Chip from the Las Vegas Strip casino of their choice! This is not a promotional chip. This is an actual $25 chip that you can cash in or bet at the tables.

What a great souvenir, and something to keep you excited about visiting Las Vegas again until you get here. Plus, imagine starting off your next trip with a “bet on us.”

2. Readers will be able to recommend (vote for) the various trip reports and the one with the most votes for the month also wins a Green $25 Casino Chip!

What are you waiting for? Click over to our Trip Report Forums and tell us about you recent trip!

Vegas For The Holidays – ‘Twas the week before Christmas … and a great time to be in Las Vegas! Crowds are light, rates are down, and for a rare week, things are more peaceful. Plan a few days here with us. It’s a good excuse to force yourself to finish that holiday shopping early! If you can’t make it this year, check out our Bellagio Botanical Gardens Christmas display photos from last year.

Airport Parking Reservations – Why didn’t someone think of this before??? You know how it is to get to the airport and hunt for parking. Especially during peak times like the holidays. Airport Parking Reservations fixes that problem. You can reserve your parking online, guaranteed and often at a discount. I love this concept! One less thing to worry about when you travel. Check out Airport Parking Reservations.

Mandalay Bay Shark Reef Photos – We’ve added photos to our huge Las Vegas photo gallery of the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef. See the photos and read about the Shark Reef.

Blackjack Birthday – There is only one place to celebrate your one-and-only 21’s Birthday: Las Vegas! And our friends at BlackJack Birthday have you set up. Imaging having a VIP access pass to the hottest clubs, shows, attractions and everything else you want to do when you turn 21 in Las Vegas. You’d pay more than $500 for all this high rolling excitement if you had to pay for it.

Or you can let us hook you up with the BlackJack Birthday pass, personalized with your name that you can wear like a rock star for a nominal fee of $21.00 to cover shipping, handling, and personalization. Visit BlackJack Birthday before you turn 21, and turn all your friends onto it as well!

VegasTalk Radio - The only Internet Radio variety show about Las Vegas broadcast from Las Vegas Vegas Talk – You can listen online Friday mornings at 9 AM Pacific, or listen to the archives anytime! This week, an Interview with Frank Marino, headliner star of La Cage at The Riviera. Frank is the longest running headliner in Las Vegas (20 years).

Plus “Fine Dining” with Les Kincaid – Les discusses McCormick and Schmick’s restaurant. Jean Scott, “The Queen of Comps” – Jean tells us how and where to use comps to get things outside of the Las Vegas casinos. “Show Happenings” with Chuck Rounds – Chuck reviews “The Fashionista’s” at Krave and other events happening this week in Las Vegas. Three NFL Football games and point picks with Dave “The Meatman” Scandaliato – Professional Sports Handicapper. The “Vegas Confidential” call with Norm Clarke – voted “Most Connected” person in town and daily columnist for the Review Journal and author of the best selling Norm Clarke! Sin City’s Ace Insider 1,000 Naked Truths

Desert Inn Implosion – The time and date are now set: This Tuesday Nov. 16’th, 2004 at 2:30 AM (that is Monday late night) the remaining two towers of the Desert Inn will come down. This is a date change from an earlier report.

Manhattanization Of Las Vegas – The 90’s brought the era of the megaresort to Las Vegas. This decade brings the high rise boom. Upwards of 30 condo projects are on the drawing boards, and MGM Mirage just announced an urban metropolis on the 66 acres between Bellagio and Monte Carlo.

Frankly, the term Manhattanization is a little off-target. This boom more reflects the development happening in coastal areas where high-rise condos are built with ocean or gulf views around upscale shopping and dining areas to attract well-to-do baby boomers and young professionals. We don’t have an ocean. Instead the Vegas Strip view is our focal point.

Gambling Talk: Austin Powers Video Slots – All these crazy video slots can be confusing. How do you win? Our gaming expert Victor H. Royer will help you understand these games! This week, click to read his article on Austin Powers slots.

Show Coupons – Remember our coupons for the free Michael Johns Comedy Hypnosis Show and $9.95 coupon for Spotlight: The show at Bourbon Street Hotel Casino.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! We’ve revamped and expanded our Las Vegas restaurant guide and are pleased to announce the addition of Barbara Brown to our staff. Barbara is a (soon to be) graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts here in Las Vegas and currently working at Bradley Ogden Restaurant in Caesars Palace. Welcome Barbara!

Our friends in Florida and the Gulf States are being pounded now and the past few weeks with hurricanes. If you want to do something nice today, take a few bucks that you were saving for a Vegas slot machine and send it to help the American Red Cross.

Imperial Hawaiian Poolside Luau – You only have a few more weeks to enjoy this fun show at the Imperial Palace. Maybe a visit to Hawaii isn’t in the cards for you this year (come to Vegas instead … where you can experience Paris, New York, Arabia, Monte Carlo, the South Seas, the Roman Empire, Venice and more). And you can still get a taste of the islands at this fun poolside show.

Read the write-up Imperial Palace offers Hawaiian twist to Vegas entertainment from our local paper then click to our Imperial Hawaiian Luau: Las Vegas Shows and Show Tickets to enjoy this show on your visit!

Meet Me In Margaritaville – Jimmy Buffett is making his annual fall tour stop and great news for Parrotheads: He’s playing two separate dates one week apart, and playing on Saturday night each time to make it possible to fly in for this one! You can catch him Oct. 16 or Oct. 23 at the MGM Grand.

We have tickets, but don’t wait. Vegas Buffett tickets go quick. Click to our Jimmy Buffett License To Chill tour page and grab your tickets now. Not sure if you want to make the trip? Decide after you check out our Jimmy Buffett info, party photos and streaming video:

THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay – Many have been asking us about this magnificent new addition at Mandalay Bay. A complete separate and self-contained hotel tower, THE Hotel rises 43 stories above the Las Vegas Strip and boasts 1,120 suites with separate living and sleeping areas, hospitable meeting places and swank hotspots for those who appreciate life’s finer things.

Click to see our THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay photos and visit our Mandalay Bay Hotel info page to check rates and availability. Simply enter your dates of travel, and you will see rates for both Mandalay Bay regular rooms and THE Hotel rooms.

NASCAR Las Vegas Nextel Cup 2005Tickets are on sale now, including great packages. You know this is one of the most popular races of the season. This past year, it has been the second highest rated race on TV (to date), only after the Daytona 500.

Are you going to end up watching it on TV, of are you going to be here in person, live and loud, when all of Las Vegas becomes NASCAR Las Vegas telling your friends to look for your face in the stands!

Don’t wait and buy lousy tickets this winter and then have to stay in Laughlin just to find a room. Click to book a reasonably priced NASCAR Las Vegas Nascar Nextel Cup 2005 Ticket and Hotel Package now online or Call Toll-Free (866) 828-9849 x143 so you can tell your friends that you have Vegas 2005 race locked up.

New PT’s Calendar Girls – Las Vegas PT’s Pubs 2005 Calendar is now on sale, with $1 per calendar benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Check out our PT’s Calendar Girls page featuring photos and streaming video of the girls! While the calendars are only available here in Las Vegas, we are looking at a way to make them available to our readers worldwide who aren’t visiting soon. Stay tuned.

Nevada Needs Nurses and Teachers – We generally encourage people not to move to Southern Nevada. We are out of water, and because of the transient nature of newcomers here (people moving and going broke partying, then moving back home), good jobs are hard to find the first few months because no one wants to hire a newcomer to a good job.

However, there is a real shortage of both teachers and medical professionals. So much that our Governor Guinn and the Southern Nevada Medical Industry Coalition have set up the site http://www.helpnevada.com to encourage and help medical professionals relocate to Las Vegas. Those looking for teaching positions can visit the Clark County School District website.

Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas

By Barbara Brown

Want to experience a bit of Germany and the Bavarian Culture in the City of Lights? Then it’s time to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the first authentic replica of the world’s most famous beer hall. Hofbrauhaus remains Munich’s most famous attraction and now we have it here in Las Vegas, located across from the Hard Rock Hotel on Paradise Road.

It is an exact replica of Hofbrauhaus Munchen complete with “Schwemme” (Beer Hall), Biergarten (Beer Garden), bar, music, food, towers, and turrets, windows, balconies and even the roof tiles are all a recreation of the original structure in Bavaria.

From the moment you walk in the door you experience the charm of the intimate corner bar to your left and a gift shop to your right which has an excellent selection of the very finest Bavarian and German merchandise. We were greeted warmly by a hostess dressed in traditional German garb who promptly seated us in the cozy and relaxing atmosphere of the Schwemme.

The menu is filled with traditional mouth watering cuisine. Menu specialties include Creamy Bavarian Potato Soup, Hofbrauhaus Salad, Wurst Salad, Bratwurst, Knackwurst, Schnitzel, Steak, and Bavarian Fish Filet and of course no menu is complete without dessert Strudels, Cheese Cakes and the famous Black Forest Chocolate Cake. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! The weather is great, The Strip is lively, and Las Vegas is on pace for a record number of visitors this year! Memorial Day is just around the corner, and this is the hottest, craziest, most action packed time of the year short of New Year’s Eve.

Because we are hooked up with a nationwide discount rates hotel provider (low rates at hotels you know and trust), don’t sit home this coming holiday weekend. Whether visiting us in Las Vegas, visiting the beach, mountains, lake or the relatives, click here for hot low Memorial Day Weekend hotel rates.

New Look – Those with sharp eyes will notice a new look to the top of this newsletter and our main page at AccessVegas.com. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be revamping and improving all areas of our site with this new look, more features, and easier navigation so you can find what you want!

Lance Burton – (pictured at right levitating Pamela Anderson during a recent Tonight Show appearance) will be co-presenting on the American Country Music Awards for the 2nd year in a row. He will, of course do a little magic with the envelope.

The Auto Collections at the Imperial Palace has added a two-wheel masterpiece to its display of classic, collector and vintage autos. A 1923 Indian Big Chief with matching princess side car is on display and for sale on the showroom floor.

The legendary motorcycle was owned by movie star Steve McQueen and custom restored for him by pinstriping and restoration master Von Dutch. The bike still has the official Von Dutch signature card fiberglassed onto the floor board of the side car.

The motorcycle was sold at the McQueen estate auction in 1984 and comes with full papers authenticated by Terry and Chad McQueen. The historic motorcycle is valued at $250,000.

The Imperial Palace is home to the award-winning tribute show Legends In Concert and the all-new Legends Pit featuring celebrity look-alike blackjack dealers.
