Monorail: Sanitized For Your Protection – Last week, we told you it the opening was close, and the Las Vegas Monorail opened back up on Christmas Eve. As a present to Las Vegas visitors, the ride was free the first five days, and carried record traffic. Of course, we were down risking life and limb (just kidding) Christmas Eve to take a ride, and everything was great. Related news stories:

Top Notch Cheap and Free Entertainment – Here are our picks for great Las Vegas entertainment without breaking your budget:

  • David Van Such is a nationally known smooth jazz artist who makes Las Vegas his home. You can catch him and his band live at Sinbad Lounge in The Aladdin this coming week (Jan. 4-8) from 4:30 – 9:00 PM, one drink minimum. Take a listen: Dial-Up or Broadband audio and make sure to tell him that AccessVegas.com sent you!
  • Larry G. Jones keeps knocking them dead downtown at The Plaza. He’s a first-rate impressionist. Danny Gans without the $100 price tag. In fact, the show’s $7.95 ticket includes a drink! Watch Larry in action: Dial-Up or Broadband video. Even if you stay on The Strip, you have to get downtown for one night. Our suggestion? See Larry’s show (6:00 PM nightly except Friday) while everyone else is standing in line for restaurants. Then enjoy a meal and catch a couple of the spectacular light shows. Fremont Street Light Show video: Dial-Up or Broadband (also free)!

New Forum Shop Expansion – is beautiful. Stunning. Amazing. Located right on The Strip, this huge three-level wing features curved escalators, statues, marble, classically painted ceilings, and more. We’ve added stunning new photos to our Caesars Forum Shops Photo Gallery. Related news stories:

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Just a reminder that we are publishing twice a week through the end of the year. We are getting swamped with New Year’s Eve announcements, 2005 concert listings, and more. In fact, a number of hot concert listings just missed this deadline so stay tuned to our next newsletter!

Merry Christmas From Las Vegas – I have a yearly tradition of posting photos from the famed Bellagio Resort Botanical Gardens and their amazing holiday display here in Las Vegas. I didn’t think I’d make deadline this year, so we posted links to previous years photos in our last issue.

However, I made it over and got some great shots posted at Bellagio Gardens Christmas 2004! This year especially, the photos don’t it justice. Snow fell from the ceiling onto the display and the main tree was surrounded by an amazing choreographed water display. For those wondering, this display is virtually all live plants. The trees, the flowers … everything. Another great reason to visit Las Vegas during the holiday season.

Many of you (record numbers) took advantage of the fact that any photo in our gallery can be sent as a free e-card and it’s still not too late to let someone know you are thinking of them during the season!

See the Grand Canyon in a Jet Helicopter! For years Maverick Helicopters has been providing a true VIP Helicopter experience of the Grand Canyon. We do things a little different than any other helicopter Company. We give you an adventure of a lifetime and not just another tour of the Grand Canyon. Las Vegas Strip tours plus Helicopter Weddings also available!

New Year’s Eve Updates – More info added to New Year’s Event Calendar: Las Vegas kicks off our one hundred year centennial this New Year’s Eve with a $600,000 fireworks show taking place up and down the entire Las Vegas Strip! Related links and information:

VIP Club Parties For New Year’s Eve

Cirque du Soleil’s KA – Dubbed “The Most Expensive Show In Modern History” by Las Vegas entertainment writer Mike Weatherford, KA by Cirque du Soleil has opened to rave reviews. Related links:

Gambling Talk: Video Slots – Diamond Cinema – Bogart and Bergman – with Victor H. Royer. Rick’s Cafe American, the intrigue, the love, the immortal song “As Time Goes By”. Here’s looking at you, kid. Once again IGT brings back the nostalgia of the silver screen, in this installment in the Diamond Cinema series of video slots. This week, click to learn all about Video Slots – Diamond Cinema – Bogart and Bergman.

“How Can You Live Here” – is a common question I get during our blazing hot summers from visitors. Well … much of the U.S. is experiencing sub-freezing and abnormally cold weather right now. I’m getting cold just watching it on TV! As that bone-crushing painful chill rips through you, think about how you’d trade it for a 105 degree (F) day sipping a cocktail around a resort swimming pool in Las Vegas. Maybe now is a good time to book a Spring trip to see us.

Speaking of living in Las Vegas …

Vegas Going Condo Crazy – As we reported here recently, high rise condo development is front and center here in Las Vegas now. At first, places like Park Towers and Turnberry were developed. Not wanting to miss out, major gaming companies ranging from MGM Mirage to Hard Rock have jumped on this trend.

Why? High rise living targets the upscale crowd. The people that casinos crave to spend money on gambling, fine dining, and high-end shopping. What better way to attract these people than to sell them a condo right on the casino property!

Upscale visitors aren’t the only group target for this new (to Las Vegas) form of living. With a serious water shortage, condo living makes sense because of shared grounds (instead of every person watering a bunch of grass and plants in their yard). Also, some proposed condos downtown and within a 2-3 mile radius of The Strip are aimed at younger professionals and gaming employees with entry level prices as low as about $150,000.

Featured Story: Carrot Top, Greens of Las Vegas

Carrot Top – I finally checked out Carrot Top on the invite of his local PR staff. He’s been headlining here for years, and all I knew about him was his Jay Leno appearances and the phone commercials that seem to play non-stop. Was I ever happy to finally check him out live!

A prop comedian, Carrot Top’s stage is filled with trunks and trunks of gags. Sounds like it would get boring after five minutes? Not even. This skilled performer rarely let up, with gag after gag after gag that had the audience laughing non-stop for the entire performance. Nothing was off-limits, from politics to NASCAR to poking fun of the very hotel he was performing at.

The show is PG-13 because of a little bit of language, but nothing that will make anyone blush. And he pulls off his entire show without getting into raunchy humor, making this the perfect fun show to take your teenagers or even Grandma to. Carrot Top plays now through September 17 at the MGM Grand. Catch him this time, but if you can’t we’ll remind you before his next headlining run.

Greens Of Las Vegas – Want some golf, but don’t want to take up hours of your vacation time or travel miles from The Strip? We had a great time at the Greens of Las Vegas, close to The Strip and just south of the Hard Rock Hotel.

Imagine a top-notch golf course minus the fairways. Hole after hole of challenging but fun putting greens outdoors in a beautiful setting. This isn’t mini-golf, but carries a couple great advantages: You can enjoy the course in about an hour, and the non-golfers in your group can still play and enjoy this experience because no fairway driving is involved.

The greens has a full pro shop, and a comfortable, upscale “19’th hole” restaurant and bar called Bogee’s. A full golf experience that doesn’t eat up your entire vacation!

Check out the Greens of Las Vegas website for more information, and a couple of great money saving coupons. With the perfect, warm fall Las Vegas weather at hand, we had a great time and you will too on your next trip!

What do you get when you put on a Broadway-style musical that features a hotel in Greece owned by an American woman, whose daughter’s father 21 years ago could have been one of three of the single mamma’s lovers, one each British, Australian and American? Did I mention that the play’s title is Italian, and the music is from the popular 1970s Swedish group, ABBA, (Dancing Queen, Thank You For The Music, etc.)?What you get from that mix is Mamma Mia, a fantastically popular show that currently plays to packed audiences at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

My daughter and I recently attended a performance. She’s a young TV comedy writer, and we sat down later to compare intergenerational opinions. Before the curtain rose, I feared that my stage musical preferences, except maybe for Cats and Les Miserables, had ended in the 1960s, when Rogers and Hammerstein broke up.

My daughter recently spent five years in NYC, living just a short hike from the theater district. In addition to being an expert on the current entertainment scene, she knows Broadway history. At age three, she had already memorized the entire scores of Bye, Bye Birdie, Oliver, Mame, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and other shows of the era.

My opinion is that Mamma Mia started slowly as the basic story was explained. Then after several quiet love songs, it exploded into highly-entertaining, toe-tapping musical numbers. Sorry, Oscar and Richard, but I believe the guys and gals who put this show together and performed it are every bit as original and entertaining as your creations.

My expert daughter patiently explained to her dad that the first 15 minutes were intentionally expository (All right, I said slow) so that the audience would understand the very complex relationships among the single mother, her daughter and the three maybe dads. We both agreed that once the lively dancing and singing numbers took over, we were totally entranced. Final father-daughter opinion: Go grABBA cab, plane, auto or bus, and wind your way to Mandalay Bay without delay to see Mamma Mia!

Mama Mia! Las Vegas: Show Times and Reservations

Now That’s a Waxy Build-UpMadame Tussaud’s London-based Wax Museum just announced it’ll soon display a replica of teen singer/rocker Britney Spears. Unlike non-moving images of such famed female celebrities as Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Di and Margaret Thatcher, Britney’s wax figure will feature inflated breasts (chest breathing) that vibrate to an accompanying sound track.Although it may be some time before a wax copy of Britney’s animated anatomy arrives here, check out Madame Tussaud’s everyday exhibit at the Venetian on your next Vegas visit.

Bring your camera, because you’ll have a ball shooting cheek-to-cheek pix with the waxy likenesses of Sinatra, Elvis, Streisand, Newton, Whoopie and many others.

Featured Story: Ted Sherman’s Las Vegas Thoughts

Cabbie Savvy – Many senior visitors gripe about Vegas taxis. Some cabbies use the long way from the airport to Strip hotels. They take the airport tunnel to I-15, and 20 long minutes later arrive at the hotel. The cabbies may tell you it avoids heavy street traffic, but instead of a $10 fare through non-highway streets, the cost can be $20+.So, when you hop a taxi at the airport, just say, “Hey, don’t use the tunnel”. Also be aware that the extra fee added to your bill is for leaving the airport into Vegas. Don’t be charged an extra fee for returning to the airport for departure.

Vegas cabbies don’t look forward to later this year. New links in the city’s monorail system will connect MGM to many hotels four miles along the Strip to the Sahara. As if taxi guys don’t have enough to worry about, there’s talk of extending the monorail to the airport.

Remember When – Dick Smothers recalls his first Las Vegas job with brother Tom…would you believe…40 years ago! Then in their early 20s, and having only performed for high school and college audiences, the Smothers Brothers weren’t sure their material was sophisticated enough for Las Vegas. They were the opening act for star Juliet Prowse at the Flamingo, and were an instant hit. To this day, after decades of award-winning TV and live performance success, they’ve never had to change their off-the-wall concepts of comedy and music.

Dick says knew he had become a star when Frank Sinatra introduced him to the audience during Frank’s performance at Caesar’s Palace. The Smothers Brothers, popular as ever, star at the Las Vegas Hilton May 6 through June 1, August 26 through September 14, and October 28 through November 16. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! We visited the Crazy Girls show last week. We haven’t seen it since comedian Joe Trammel took over hosting duties. The show dancers are now even a more risquÚ. Plus, Trammel spoofs everthing from Richard Simmons to Lord Of The Dance and his quick-paced comedy was great.

Crazy Girls is a must for “guys night out” but still plenty sensual enough for couples. The night we went, couples made up the bulk of the audience, including one who had been married for over 50 years! Talk about keeping spice in the marriage! Featured Review: Hypnolarious Starring Terry Stokes

Hypnotist shows conjure up all kinds of ideas, especially to those who have never attended one. Am I going to be put under a crazy trance? Are people going to take their clothes off? Is this some kind of mystic seance?

Put those crazy notions aside and get ready to laugh and laugh and laugh when you go see Hypnolarious starring Terry Stokes. Yes, Stokes is a premier hypnotist but more importantly he is a funny guy. He’s a true entertainer. You’ll leave having enjoyed yourself.

Like other hypnotist shows, volunteers are chosen from the audience. Before being hypnotized, Stokes tells them that after the show they will find their clothes neatly folded by the side of the stage after the show (just a joke, this show is PG-13 but no one gets naked). Read More …

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It is great to be back in the saddle after taking a month off from publication. I survived New Year’s Eve and a move. Most people move away from The Strip to avoid the traffic, commotion, and have a “normal” life. I moved closer so we can increase our great coverage of Las Vegas tourism.

Cold Enough? – Every summer, people say “I don’t see how anybody can live in Las Vegas … this heat is crazy.” I dunno … been near 70 here since the first of the year and most of the rest of the U.S. weather map looks bone chilling. I’d suggest a quick trip to Las Vegas to thaw out. Doesn’t wearing shorts sound more fun than layering clothes!

Write Down This Number! – A great new service for readers: Many within driving distance jump in the car for a “road trip” to Vegas, not giving any thought to which hotel, or just calling the usual one and taking whatever they have. Others plan a trip to town, but haven’t booked any shows, tours, or golf before arrival.

You can go hotel to hotel looking for a room, or hunt down a show and tour booth (without really knowing who you are dealing with). Or … you can use our new telephone reservations service!

Get on your cell or room phone and call (toll free) 800-696-5721 to book all hotels, shows, tours, golf, and even dining reservations! One number does it all to save you time. Plus, you can compare rates without even getting out of the car or calling multiple hotels. Print this out now and stuff a copy in your suitcase or glove box, and another in your pocket or purse!

Special Notes: This number is only for new reservations. To change or confirm existing reservations, use the contact information given to you when you reserved. Special internet rates offered in newsletter not available on the phone.

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Super Bowl Weekend – is always huge. Most hotels have one (or more) parties where a set fee buys you admission, food, and (sometimes) booze but co’mon … this is Las Vegas. Every TV in public view at every bar, lounge, sports book, and anywhere else in the resort and tourism areas will be tuned to the game. You can’t escape it!

The Raiders are a 3.5 point favorite as I write (if you bet the Raiders, they must win by 3.5 points or more, or Buc’s bettors win instead) and there is no excitement like having a nice bet on a big game and getting that start-to-finish thrill. Room availability is still good for this weekend: Check the rates! Remember that many hotels don’t allow Saturday night arrival and the game isn’t until Sunday evening so book an extra night and call in sick so you can get home Monday.

Megabucks – is topping $28,000,000 as I write. That is a lot of zeros behind a dollar sign! You can watch the numbers rise at the IGT Megabucks site and fantasize. Be interesting to see if it hits this Super Bowl weekend.

Green Valley Ranch – earned their first AAA Four Diamond award, joining The Venetian, Mirage, Treasure Island, Golden Nugget, and Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas. Of note is that Green Valley Ranch is the first “local’s” casino to earn the honor. The property feels like an upscale local’s casino to visitors just going to eat, drink, gamble, etc. but to guests it is a boutique resort in the hills with a great view of the entire Las Vegas Valley and The Strip.

Clang, Clang, Clang Is Done, Done, Done – MGM Mirage is the latest gaming company to make the move to “ticket in, ticket” out machines (as opposed to the old ones that pay out actual coins). How do you feel? Do you like the “no muss, no fuss” or is part of the thrill of winning hearing the coins hit the tray? Read the full story and give us your opinion on our Slots Message Board.

Palms Unveils Bachelor Party Suites – These two suites are the ultimate playrooms for bad boys and specifically designed for private bachelor (or bachelorette) parties. These bachelor suites are located on the 28th floor of the Palms Casino Resort, adjacent to the Real World Suite. Click for full story/details.

Cirque Replacing EFX (Details) – With the long running EFX at MGM Grand gone, the hotel is scheduled to open a new Cirque du Soleil production in 2004 that will shake the spectator’s perception of space, conception of the law of gravity and comprehension of the world in three dimensions. Click for full story.

Subscription “Dues” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, showstours, and golf through AccessVegas.Com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

Featured Review: New Year’s Eve Review and Photos

Oh what a night! New Year’s Eve never fails to be a wild ride here in Las Vegas. With the entire Las Vegas Strip closed down, it turned into a massive pedestrian mall for the midnight fireworks.I was fortunate to attend with a couple of first-timers. They couldn’t get over what an amazing celebration it was. Ironically, this was one of the most tame I had experienced, partly due to January 1 falling on a midweek (many visitors needing to check out and leave the next morning).

Tame didn’t mean lame, though. An estimated 250,000+ were relishing in this unique experience, walking right down the middle of one of the world’s most famous streets, drink in hand, smiles on every face.

Something cool comes over people when they visit Las Vegas. You can see it and sense it, and the New Year’s revelers were definitely feeling it. You put 1/4 million people together and add booze in almost any other situation or city and you are asking for trouble. But police reported few problems and a very low arrest rate. The Vegas vibe kicks in and people just want to have fun!

On another note, Las Vegas is finally earning the “sin city” reputation and catching up with New Orleans, Key West, and other places where women trade a “look at these” for beads.

As always, we were in the heart of the action filming. You can click on any of the photos on the right, or view our specific photo categories below.

As usual, no fee or registration. View them and use our “Send As Postcard” feature to share with friends!

Streaming video and fireworks photos coming in a few weeks.

Desert Pines Golf Club

Desert Pines Golf Club – Desert Pines Golf Club creates a Carolina feel in Las Vegas’ with 4,000 mature pine trees, pine needles, white sand bunkers and water that comes into play on nine of the 18 holes. NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! You may have noticed no specials at the top of the newsletter anymore. Yes, there are plenty of great deals — that was the problem. People complained because some of the deals listed sold out pretty quickly, and assumed there were no others. In reality, we have tons of great rates all the time — all you have to do is visit AccessVegas.com and click on one of the discount room buttons or links to check rates for your next stay!

SINATRA JR. TICKET GIVEAWAY – We are proud to welcome “Sinatra Sings Sinatra” Aug. 15-21 at the MGM Grand. The concert, which originally debuted in May, features songs that Frank Sinatra sang in more than 40 years of performing in Las Vegas. The arrangements by such legendary musicians as Nelson Riddle, Billy May and Don Costa played by a 36-piece orchestra are the same incredible arrangements used by Sinatra throughout his career. We have two pairs of tickets to the Aug. 17’th 10:30 PM show up for grabs. You can enter and/or learn more about this event and purchase tickets at Sinatra Jr.

PARTY, PARTY, PARTY – Where do we start? E! Entertainment Television hosts the finals for Brooke Burke’s replacement July 12-13 at The Palms. This is open to the public! GOLDEN GATE STRIKE – has been settled. All Las Vegas union hotels have signed five year contracts.

BIG WINNER – Speaking of downtown, a Hawaii resident (who declined to release their identity) was staying at the California Hotel and headed over to Main St. Station to play the slots. With only $2 invested, they hit for $2,190,306.20 on Wheel of Fortune! I’m thinking they flew back home first class … you could be next. Main St. Station is a block off the Fremont St. Experience but one of the nicest properties downtown and well worth the visit.

99 CENT BREAKFAST – isn’t quite a thing of the past yet. Nevada Palace Casino (just south of Sam’s Town on Boulder Highway) is offering 2 eggs, hash browns, 2 bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit and coffee for only 99 cents Sunday night through Friday mornings, 11 PM to 6 AM. NUKE WASTE – is coming to Nevada. Yawn. For those concerned, it isn’t going to be trucked down The Strip or anywhere near it. Plans call for a rail line to the site that runs far outside the Vegas Valley. The repository 90 miles northwest of town. Truck shipments will be transferred to rail far away from this area.

SHOW REVIEW:

Mystere by Cirque du Soleil – December, 1993. Treasure Island Las Vegas. A city still best known for cheap buffets and cheap rooms. No Mandalay Bay, no Bellagio, no Venetian, no Paris Las Vegas. Cirque du Soleil was popular in art and theatre circles but few in regular walks of life were familiar with the French Canadian company and their unique brand of human-based circus theatre. Boy, did that all change!

Almost a decade later, Mystere is still one of the hottest shows on the Las Vegas Strip and with great reason. This troupe of highly skilled athletic actors combine drama, rhythmic music, and fantastic feats that devy gravity.

The “Aerial Cube” features Paul Bowler suspended high above, spinning in a glistening steel cube at amazing heights. In the “Chinese Poles,” highly costumed performers use amazing muscular strength and control to mimic what may be insects on stalks of grass or wheat. They cling to, climb, and spring between the poles in superhuman fashion using only their own power and balance.

Marco and Paul Larador (brothers from Portugal) perform “Hand To Hand.” This strength and balancing act done on a rotating dome must be seen to be believed. But just when you feel you can’t be more amazed, “Bungee” takes center stage. Six performers suspended high above spring deep from trapezes in an amazing choreographed routine.

Other segments include the traditional circus act “Korean Plank” performed in a new and more complex way, the “Aerial High Bar” (a gymnastics inspired swinging high bar routine), and the “Trampoline and Fast Track” where a huge winged trampoline set let’s performers fly sideways between upright trampolines.

So save some cash and catch Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey next time they hit your town, right? WRONG. The circus style acts are performed in a custom theatre with amazing costume, masks, color, and original live music that pulls at every sense and emotion. These acts just help paint part of a bigger canvas.

We are escorted through the show by a nontraditional clown. His disdain for the hoopla and childlike mischief (set off by the appearance of being an aged character) provide both comic relief and provoking thought. Babies (actors playing them) take us to the innocence and simplicity and hope for a bright tomorrow. Mysterious creatures remind us of childhood dreams, fantasies, and bedtime stories.

Mystere has earned worldwide respect and will leave you with lasting memories. This show was continually voted the best in Las Vegas until sister show “0” opened at Bellagio. Even then, it is well within the top five and a highlight of a Las Vegas trip.

Mystere by Cirque du Soleil plays Wednesday – Sunday at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino. Tickets are $80.00 plus tax and may be purchased up to three months in advance by clicking here: MystÞre by Cirque du Soleil

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Running a little late this time. I was out of town for a week at my sister’s wedding, and I thought it would be a good idea to get caught up on the stack of newspapers and press releases so I could pass everything along.

The long 4’th of July weekend is just about here, and there is still time to reserve your room and head to Las Vegas. Check at http://www.accessvegas.com and grab rooms while they are still available. This year both the Stratosphere Tower and The Venetian are featuring fireworks (approx. 9 PM for both).

Our deepest sympathy to the fans, friends, and family of Who bassist John Entwistle who passed away Friday June 28 here in Las Vegas, just one day before the start of their highly anticipated concert tour.

$1.83 BILLION – is the new price tag for Steve Wynn’s Le Reve (former Desert Inn site). Other reports place the cost closer to $2.5 billion. The billion dollar construction credit line is believed to be the biggest construction loan ever issued in the United States. How upscale is this property going to be? They are looking at having Ferrari and Maserati dealerships right on site. Completion is expected in 2005. We’ll tell you more as they actually get moving along. This is looking to be huge.

STRIKE LOOMING – Looks like we are going to have a hotel strike at a few selected properties that have not come to terms with the union. Word is that replacement workers are ready to go to minimize disruption. The strike is set for a few hours following our publication here, but we’ll keep a hotel list and details updated at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotel-strike.htm

CIRQUE DU TOO MANY? – Two more Cirque du Soleil shows are coming to the Las Vegas Strip. New York, New York will open one in 2003 and MGM in 2004. Details are scarce except that the New York, New York show will be sensual and erotic. Cirque du Soleil has been kicking around the idea of an adult (topless) show for some time. This just might be it. Add to that Celine Dion’s show (which is supposed to be Cirque style) and another Cirque style show at Le Reve and we’ll see if overkill is possible, even in Las Vegas.

$20 DISCOUNT – We have a special arrangement with Maverick Helicopters to offer $20 off on their spectacular Grand Canyon helicopter flights online. Maverick flies farther and deeper into the Canyon with some of the newest equipment and the best safety record. They are the company the concierges at many of the top Las Vegas resorts call when their guests request a Grand Canyon tour. By booking online through us, we can offer you $20 off these stunning tours. Tour info, photos, and booking details available at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/las-vegas-grand-canyon-tours.htm

NICK’S – Our restaurant guide Chef John Guinivere just reviewed Nick’s On The Strip, a pleasant alternative to a hotel coffee shop for diverse 24 hour dining and a great night view. You can find it and other reviews at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-restaurants.htm

FREE BINGO, CHEAP BOWLING – The Westward Ho is having free bingo at 4 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays. Everyone is welcome for the eight games played at each session. $50 prize each game. The Gold Coast (next to Rio and Palms) has $1 bowling and $1 drinks Midnight to 4 AM, Mondays through Fridays.

TAXI SCAM – The cab drivers are at it again. If you are on your way down The Strip, they’ll tell you that the Bellagio Fountain show is about to start and will pull into the right lane of traffic sitting there with about 20 other cabs until the show starts while the meter is running (racking up both a higher fare and hoping you tip them extra for the “favor”).

Granted, the fountain show runs every 15 minutes after dark so it is never more than a 10 minute wait, but the view from a cab is lousy. You are behind trees and other people lining the sidewalk. Since the fountain shows do play every 15 minutes from dusk to midnight, and since they are well worth seeing, plan on seeing them up close from the sidewalk sometime during your visit.

SPIRIT AIRLINES – is starting to serve Las Vegas. This on the heels of Jet Blue announcing that they are entering our market October 10. This opens up new service from New York (Jet Blue) and Detroit (Spirit) as well as flights from multiple cities in Florida (heavily served by both airlines).

FABERGE: TREASURES FROM THE KREMLIN – opens at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art in September running through January 26, 2003. The exhibit will feature more than 100 of the world’s finest Faberge masterworks. Tickets are $15 ($12 for students and NV residents).

SUBSCRIPTION “DUES” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. SHOW REVIEW:

Bravo Starring Charo – The “Cuchi-Cuchi” girl has returned to Las Vegas. Charo made her Las Vegas debut at the Sahara in the mid-70’s, playing here often as well as making 45 appearances on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, guest star spots on shows like The Love Boat, and recording albums. After taking the better part of two decades off to raise her son in Hawaii, she is making a strong comeback in Las Vegas.

Bravo is an international variety show with contemporary Latin music, flamenco, salsa and samba dancing. While centered on Charo’s multitude of talents (she can do much more than jiggle), she doesn’t try to carry the show. Bravo contains a full cast of musicians, dancers, and specialty acts to create an enjoyable, well rounded show.

After the opening song and dance set, ventriloquist Sammy King and his wisecracking Mexican parrot Francisco do a very funny comedy bit. Sammy King has been performing since 1958 all over the world as well as a mainstay performer of Las Vegas shows. His act is seasoned by his years of performing, but hasn’t lost lost the edge. He is hilarious.

After the dance number “Freedom,” the aerial adage team of Cees and Cathy take center stage. For those not familiar with this art form, it combines dance, strength, and gymnastics performed while suspended high in the air. The male generally wraps his arms around leather straps and floats through the air while supporting, twirling, and twisting with the female in an artful way.

Later in the show, Charo took the stage to perform four classical guitar pieces. While known best for her “cuchi-cuchi,” few know that she trained and performed with classical guitar master Segovia in her birth country of Spain and continues to be a master of the instrument. This segment was long enough to be enjoyable without being an exercise in ego.

Bravo is more likely to appeal to those who know/remember who Charo is or who enjoy the very popular Latin music and dance (which the show has plenty of). The Sahara showroom is moderately intimate and very comfortable, providing the perfect venue for most aspects of this production.

Charo was recently inducted into the Casino Legends Hall of Fame and video highlights of the induction are available at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/news Video highlights of Bravo Staring Charo are available at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/shows

Bravo Starring Charo plays at the Sahara Hotel and Casino. For current times and ticket prices, please click http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=299&cityid=1 and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability.
