Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:
Hello from Las Vegas! Spring Break and March Madness are both in full swing and the temperatures are pushing 90 F during the day. The party is around the pool (or in the sports book) during the day and on The Strip at night. No snow to shovel in Las Vegas.
Access Vegas Minute – We’re beta-testing a one minute commercial spot called the Access Vegas Minute. Right now it’s running during shows on the new Talk Radio Las Vegas Network online. You can listen to this week’s “Minute” directly by clicking: Access Vegas Minute.
Sound is compressed (AM quality) so that dial-up users can enjoy it. (Non-Windows computer users click here).
Mardi Gras Las Vegas – in April. The Fremont Street Experience Eighth Annual Mardi Gras Celebration is Friday and Saturday, April 16th and 17th . Yes, I know Fat Tuesday was weeks ago. Someone tell that to the planners downtown. However, this is worth checking out. Fremont Street turns into a huge party with showgirls, parades, and just lots of fun. Click to see photos from last year and click for the complete story, details, and line-up. |

Star Trek BORG Invasion 4D – has opened at the Las Vegas Hilton. This groundbreaking interactive experience is the first all-digital motion picture to incorporate live action and animation within a 3D cinema environment. Click to read full story and click to see photos.
A Reader Asks – Just 3 weeks to go until we leave grey, cold London for sunny, fun Vegas for our wedding! We have decided upon Emeril’s for lunch after the ceremony but … I just wandered if anybody had been to either Spago or Chinois and had any opinions to share? Or Commander’s Palace also? Oh hell, any good places?!
Help them out! Tell them about any of the above you have been to, or the nice restaurants in Las Vegas you enjoy by clicking to our message boards.
VH1 Divas Package Deal – Travelocity takes you to the VH1 Divas Show. Add tickets to the VH1 Divas Show to your TotalTripSM Patti LaBelle, Jessica Simpson, and other superstars onstage. Free Postcard Update – If you are new, you might not know that we have over 2000 Las Vegas photos, all of which can be sent as a picture postcard to friends, family, or just a nudge, nudge to that special person. We’ve added new Vegas themed captions and music to spice them up with.
Click to visit our Las Vegas Photos gallery. Find the picture you like, and use the “send as postcard” link under that photo!
Happy Birthday Las Vegas – Our insane city turns 100 years old next year, and the celebration might be unparalelled. On July 4, 2005 Las Vegas is going to throw a part that tops our decadent, over-the-top New Year’s Eve celebration. Fireworks, huge concert acts, and worldwide coverage is planned. As always, we’ll update you as the plans move along!
Note to civic and gaming leaders: How come other major cities have big festivals and celebrations (often) multiple times a year and we don’t? Las Vegas should be jammed for Mardi Gras, Halloween, and whatever else excuse we can find to close a couple streets and set off some fireworks.
Weclome Ariane – We want to welcome Ariane on board to the AccessVegas.com crew. With a background in modeling, acting, journalism and writing you’ll be seeing and hearing her contributions very soon. She’s regularly works trade shows and conventions here, so check her out next time your company needs good talent in Las Vegas. Click to her site for more info. |

Master Magician Lance Burton
You have probably seen Lance Burton on T.V. countless times. He’s been a semi-fixture on The Tonight Show, dating back to Johnny Carson who called Lance “the best magician I have ever seen.” More recently on everything from Hollywood Squares (where he is now a semi-regular guest) to programs on Animal Planet network. |
Lance graduated from an ongoing guest spot in Folies Bergere to his own to his own show in the Lance Burton Theater at the Monte Carlo a few years ago, and continues a very succesful run.
The show started with the clip from his last television special in which he was chained to the tracks of the infamous Desperado rollercoaster in Primm (40 miles south of Las Vegas). It is arguably the tallest and fastest in the world. While he was able to work his way free, he couldn’t hear his assistant’s time counts and was nearly killed. Even in slow motion, you could see the coaster missing his feet by inches as he jumped free.
Lance it a traditional magician, not relying on lasers and tigers so much as classic magic taken to a new level. He does make himself flatten and vanish in a twist on the old rabbit from a hat routine that fills the stage with machinery (and his beautiful assistants). In an aviation themed illusion, his showgirl assistants manage to appear/dissapear into a suitcase placed on a table in the middle of the stage. Nothing above, below, behind … and no way they could all fit. Wow.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:
Hello from Las Vegas! Where has the time gone? It’s been a month since I last wrote and I’ve missed everyone! However, we’ve literally tripled the amount of information we add to AccessVegas.com so stop by every few days and check out the What’s New section of our front page.
We are working on a beautiful, upgraded design for AccessVegas.com as well as upgrading behind the scenes to bring you a lot more streaming Las Vegas video.
We are also very close to splitting the newsletter up (as promised): A new 4-5 times a week update for avid Vegas fanatics, and back to our weekly version for those looking for more basic, helpful vacation planning.
Lost of giveaways ready to go when we get the bugs out of our contest software. We had to stop running giveaways for a while because we have so many readers, we could no longer process entries by hand. Plus lots more cool stuff I don’t even want to get into yet …
The Weather Is Here – If you watched the NASCAR race form Las Vegas, you saw how perfect the weather is this time of year. Highs around 80 with very comfortable temperatures throughout the late evening. Spring and fall are prime time in Las Vegas so click to check room rates now.
Celine Dion Tickets Available – Tickets for her June shows are available, but going very, very quickly. Check out our June Headliners and Concert Calendar for details. Speaking of …
Entertainment Capital of the World – Las Vegas continues to live up to this billing. Our Headliners and Concert Calendar is jammed with entertainment. Check it out!
101 Las Vegas Top 10 Lists – Las Vegas Review-Journal gossip columnist Norm! (Clarke) is getting ready to put out this interesting book. This is the man who was first to break stories like Britney Spear’s Las Vegas wedding.
I had the pleasure of addressing a group of business leaders recently, and Norm was among them. Had a nice chat with him afterwards and we’ll be looking forward to his book. We have a number of other Las Vegas and gaming related books we read to pass time during our unusually cold winter here (it actually snowed twice, although brief), and we’ll be reviewing those soon as well.
Binion’s – After numerous legal hurdles and every monkey wrench imaginable, Binion’s Horseshoe downtown will be re-opening soon. But will it be like the old Binion’s we all knew and loved? We’ll let you know.
Roy Horn Update – Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn is up around walking a bit with the assistance of a wheeled walking aid, according to multiple sources. We wish him well in his continuing recovery. There is word of a Siegfried and Roy worldwide TV special down the road as his recovery progresses.
Happy Birthday Lance – What do Osama Bin Laden, James Earl Ray, Prince Edward, Chuck Norris and Sharon Stone all have in common? They share a birthday with Las Vegas’ own Master Magician Lance Burton who just celebrated his 44’th birthday March 10. Next issue, we provide you an updated review of Lance’s great show! |
We Will Rock You – Paris Las Vegas appears ready to bring this production to Las Vegas on the heels of the very successful run of Mamma Mia! at Mandalay Bay. More details as they become available.
Valley Air Express – new air service now allows you to “fly” up I-15 between Las Vegas and Victorville, CA. Because they are a “charter” type airline and fly into Henderson Executive Airport (about 15 minutes from The Strip), you avoid the delays of security, plus the long drive through the desert. We’ll try to scam a ride soon to tell you more, as they look to expand into serving Riverside as well. Check them out online.

We do things a little different than any other helicopter Company. We give you an adventure of a lifetime and not just another tour of the Grand Canyon. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:
Hello from Las Vegas! I’m proud to announce a second newsletter coming in the next week or two. Trying to put everything in this one is walking too crazy of a tightrope.
Some of you want to hear every rumor, all the dirt, be informed right away about specials and events and similar. Others might find that overkill, and are very happy with getting the basics every week or two so you can plan a better vacation without being overwhelmed.
We’ll soon announce the new newsletter which will be much shorter, a little more edgy (opinion and commentary), and delivered almost daily. Current subscribers will not automatically be put on the new list. We’ll tell you how to get signed on when we debut it.
Lots Of Excitement – happening with plenty of great headliners on the way over the next few weeks:
- 2/13 – 4/4: Elton John (Premium and Sold Out seating also available)
- 2/20 – 2/21: Daryl Hall and John Oates
- 4/15 – 4/21: Paul Anka
- 4/22 – 5/05: ¡ Tom Jones
- House of Blues: We are now listing all House of Blues shows on our Concert Calendar. Ludacris, Jeff Healey, Bob Weir, Deep Purple, more.
Everybody stops and plays in Las Vegas. What a great excuse for a trip and the excitement of your favorite headliner or band here in Sin City! Click to our Concert Calendar for complete listings.
NASCAR Las Vegas – If you don’t know what “Boogity, Boogity, Boogity” means, skip to the next story. If you do, we are getting revved up for race weekend March 5-7. If you don’t get off your duff and decide to go now, you can deal with the pangs of watching it on TV while viewing all the special Las Vegas excitement that comes to our Nextel Cup race.
We have a limited number of tickets, packages (ticket and hotel to guarantee you are set), and special hotel deals for those already with tickets. Click to our complete NASCAR Las Vegas 2004 page. Me? I was a Rusty Wallace #2 fan until hometown guy Kurt Busch #97 hit the Cup. Gotta like #77 Brendan Gaughn, another hometown guy. One of the sales guys here lives and dies with the #20 Tony Stewart.
Remember, you can bet on the race every week at all the sports books, including betting the Las Vegas race before you go watch it live. Hot spots to watch all races? NASCAR Cafe at the The Sahara (of course) and Brendan’s Irish Pub, a large pub in The Orleans. The pub was named after casino magnate Michael Gaughn’s son Brendan. Same guy driving the Kodak #77 now.
No Fun League – The NFL pulled the plug on many Las Vegas Superbowl parties. This is part of a long-standing feud between the league and Las Vegas. They won’t let the Convention Authority (LVCVA) buy ads on the Superbowl broadcasts, claiming distance from gambling. (The proposed ad highlighted Las Vegas as a resort destination and did not mention gaming).
Taking it one step further, they sent legal letters to shut down many of the Superbowl parties, claiming copyright violation if the game is shown on a screen bigger than 55″. The Palms was going to show it in one of their movie theatres! The NFL also had a reported problem with hotels charging for admission to these parties.
Reality check: The game was on free broadcast TV and one could watch it for all over every casino for free: Sports books, bars, and some casinos had TV’s set up in gaming areas. The charge for the special parties covered food, booze, bikini girls, pro player appearances and similar arranged by the hotel for party attendees.
What’s next? The NFL won’t let you invite a few guys over to watch Monday night football if everybody is giving you a few bucks to take care of the food and booze for the evening? We got even. The LVCVA bought non-network time during the game in major markets like L.A., Dallas, Chicago, and others!
Roy Horn Update – Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn reportedly took a couple steps over the past weekend. We wish him well in his continuing recovery.
Huge Casino Merger – Boyd Gaming (Stardust, Main Street Station, Sam’s Town, etc.) merged with Coast Casinos (Barbary Coast, Gold Coast, Orleans, Suncoast) to form a major player in casino gambling. Coast will be operated as a subsidiary with Michael Gaughn continuing as the CEO, so don’t expect any major changes right away.
The power of the combined companies does clear the way for the Stardust to be expanded into a mega-resort without significant outside financing.
With Wynn Las Vegas being built across the street from Fashion Show mall (between Treasure Island and Stardust), we may see the “hot” part of The Strip moving back north after being concentrated at the south end of The Strip for the past few years.
Trump Licensed – The Donald got his ticket to run a gaming operation here in Las Vegas. No specifics yet, but he is also hinting at a Trump Tower. Not a bad move in a city where Turnberry (and Turnberry style) high end residential towers are sprouting up. (And I’m just one Megabucks pull away from buying one, damn it)!
Streaming Video Golf Lessons Part 7: Shadow Golf – We’ve teamed up with Revere Anthem Golf Club Director of Instruction Chris Eastman (in conjunction with ChefLive.com) and put together a series of eight streaming video golf tips.
Chris starts with fundamentals like aim and grip, and works through some of the finer points of the game. This week: Lesson 7 – Shadow Golf. Click To View All Streaming Lessons

Featured Story:
David Brenner
Our not-so-young-anymore readers will remember David Brenner as the innovative comedian who made a record 158 guest appearances on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. Our “just turned 21” readers are probably going “someone hosted the Tonight Show before Jay Leno?”David Brenner was an inovator in observational comedy (“I read in the news the other day …”) and hasn’t lost his touch. His show should be required viewing for up-and-coming comedians. |
Brenner has settled in for a year-long stint at the new Westin Casuarina, taking time off from the road to be with his family (a la Celine Dion) but it hasn’t slowed his work ethic. He combs the newspapers, cable news, reality shows, and just about everything else in news and pop culture assuring that his show has punch, is up-to-date, and doesn’t let up.
I won’t give away the jokes, and I couldn’t because you never see the same show twice. But I will tell you that I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time, literally being brought to tears twice!
This is a chance to see a famous legend still in his prime, and well worth the (very) short trip down Flamingo Road to the Westin Casuarina. (The Westin is closer to Bellagio than The Rio and Palms are, although in the opposite direction from The Strip).
Brenner is not a dirty comic but occasionally uses adult language to punctuate a point. I’d probably suggest 16 and over to view the show. The only people who should avoid it are those clueless about current events. If you don’t live in a cave somewhere, you’ll probably enjoy Brenner.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:
Hello from Las Vegas! Highs this next week will be in the 60’s (F) and the cold and snow in much of the US doesn’t look like it is letting up soon. Can’t say I’d trade places with those of you snow and icebound, but this is a great time to get away to Las Vegas and warm up.
Our pick for the best Super Bowl party this Sunday? AladdinÆs Big Game Party features gorgeous Hawaiian Tropic models, a chance to win $100,000, giveaways … oh, the game on huge screens.
Valentine’s Day – is right around the corner. Easy for us guys to forget (hey, Super Bowl is on tap, NASCAR is starting … ) and if you didn’t measure up last year, take her to Vegas this year and all will be forgiven. Plus, it falls on a Saturday so the odds are you have the day off.
Rooms aren’t going to be cheap on short notice, so use our expert advice that we give for New Year’s Eve bookings to nail that Valentines room in Vegas. She’ll be the envy of her friends (and you get to go to Vegas)!
Best Kept Secret – Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is among the best kept secrets in Las Vegas … and it is free! Home to a flock of live Chilean Flamingos, African penguins, swans, ducks, Koi, and turtles populating the grounds, this is a favorite of ours to unwind or take someone for a romantic walk. The carefully tended gardens, tropical plants, and waterfalls are amazing.
You can find the habitat at the Flamingo Las Vegas by heading back in the direction of the buffet. As noted, this is free and open to the public. Not visiting soon (or want a sneak peek before you get here)? Click to view our Flamingo Wildlife Habitat photos!
Roy Horn Update – Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn is progressing very well, according to Las Vegas gossip columnist Norm. Click to read the details
Speaking of … word is that Siegfried and Roy will be replaced with a Cirque Du Soleil show. That combined with the Cirque style show Celine Dion – A New Day and a Cirque style show scheduled for Wynn Las Vegas, and the one soon to come online at the MGM Grand will bring this unique show style to seven different venues.
Will supply outstrip demand? Probably not as these unique, high-end productions are sensory delights that make a lifetime impression. If you get a chance to see Cirque du Soleil shows O, Mystere, or Zumanity, grab it. Tickets are constantly in high demand.

Martin Nievera – Word is out that this Philippine-born entertainer is singing up a storm downtown at the Golden Nugget. We had to miss the press preview(I had the flu) but look forward to seeing him soon. In the meantime, don’t pass up this talented entertainer bringing back a taste of “old Vegas” with a new touch. Lawry’s The Prime Rib
By Barbara Hendricks and Robert Waller
Lawry’s The Prime Rib is at first glance an elegant, simple and well known eating establishment. Located on Las Vegas’ famed “restaurant row” just a mile from The Strip, Lawry’s dramatic Art Deco design, rich woods and vibrant colors welcome you into a setting that has an extraordinary feeling of warmth and elegance. |
The dÚcor is tasteful but doesn’t scream snobbery. The staff is very well trained and many have been with the company for decades. Their helpful nature and hospitable attitude defines the culture that is Lawry’s.
Let’s talk about the food. Wow! Bring your appetite. Good size proportions, and the entire menu from salads to entrees, and (of course) deserts are excellent.
