Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:Note: Mr. Newkirk is recovering from illness. His return is projected for June. In the meantime, please enjoy the stories, photos, and news links complied by our staff!
We are reprinting Ted Newkirk’s review of Mystere this week. In light of all the hoopla surrounding Le Reve (the new Franco Dragone show at Wynn Las Vegas), a look back at Mystere is particularly timely. Franco Dragone created the Cirque du Soleil shows Mystere and “O” for (then) Steve Wynn resorts Treasure Island and Bellagio. Dragone went on to create his own company … which brought him back to Las Vegas where he created Celine Dion – A New Day and now Le Reve.Special Bonus: Click and listen to Kunya Sobe (32k streaming sample) from the CD Mystere: Live In Las Vegas while you read this. You’ll feel like you are there!
Mystere by Cirque du Soleil – It was December, 1993. Treasure Island Las Vegas. A city still best known for cheap buffets and cheap rooms. No Mandalay Bay, no Bellagio, no Venetian, no Paris Las Vegas. Cirque du Soleil was popular in art and theatre circles but few in regular walks of life were familiar with the French Canadian company and their unique brand of human-based circus theatre. Boy, did that all change!
Over a decade later, Mystere is still one of the hottest shows on the Las Vegas Strip and with great reason. This troupe of highly skilled athletic actors combine drama, rhythmic music, and fantastic feats that defy gravity.
The “Aerial Cube” features Paul Bowler suspended high above, spinning in a glistening steel cube at amazing heights. In the “Chinese Poles,” highly costumed performers use amazing muscular strength and control to mimic what may be insects on stalks of grass or wheat. They cling to, climb, and spring between the poles in superhuman fashion using only their own power and balance.
Marco and Paul Larador (brothers from Portugal) perform “Hand To Hand.” This strength and balancing act done on a rotating dome must be seen to be believed. But just when you feel you can’t be more amazed, “Bungee” takes center stage. Six performers suspended high above spring deep from trapezes in an amazing choreographed routine.
Other segments include the traditional circus act “Korean Plank” performed in a new and more complex way, the “Aerial High Bar” (a gymnastics inspired swinging high bar routine), and the “Trampoline and Fast Track” where a huge winged trampoline set let’s performers fly sideways between upright trampolines.
So save some cash and catch Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey next time they hit your town, right? WRONG. The circus style acts are performed in a custom theatre with amazing costume, masks, color, and original live music that pulls at every sense and emotion. These acts just help paint part of a bigger canvas.
We are escorted through the show by a nontraditional clown. His disdain for the hoopla and childlike mischief (set off by the appearance of being an aged character) provide both comic relief and provoking thought. Babies (actors playing them) take us to the innocence and simplicity and hope for a bright tomorrow. Mysterious creatures remind us of childhood dreams, fantasies, and bedtime stories.
Mystere has earned worldwide respect and will leave you with lasting memories. This show was continually voted the best in Las Vegas until sister show “0” opened at Bellagio. Even then, it is still a top show and a highlight of a Las Vegas trip. If you have yet to experience a Franco Dragone production, start with Mystere.

Vegas In The Morning – Elvis’ Music Is Back! – The next chapter of the life of Elvis in music has begun. Fate has recently summoned literally the entire Elvis Presley “Hit Making Team” back to the recording studio to continue the King’s music legacy. American singing sensation John Krondes and The Jordanaires have joined forces with the Presley “Hit Makers” in a monumental music project that has left music fans worldwide shocked and stunned. Edward Lozzi of Edward Lozzi Associates Public Relations in Hollywood, CA has called it a “Historic Moment”, one of the greatest Hollywood stories seen in years.
As Elvis had said in song, “Miracles I Guess Still Happen Now And Then.” This fans is our miracle. For the first time since the King’s death in 1977, the Presley “Hit Makers” have now answered fates call to return to the studio. The Elvis Presley “Hit Making Machine” is back in place with John Krondes and The Jordanaires in the recording studios of New York, Nashville, Las Vegas and Los Angeles creating “Original” new music with some of Elvis’ original composers for what music experts are now calling the beginning of a new Era in Music.
Vegas In The Morning puts even more of Elvis’ Hit Making Team together. The Sweet Inspirations join John and the Jordanaires on this rockin’ party song. (That’s the Jordanaires’ timeless bass, Ray Walker, belting out those bottom vocals.) Vegas In The Morning was written as a salute to Las Vegas’ 100th birthday by John and his long-time co-writer, Paul Evans.

And while we’d love to do it anyway, we pride ourselves on good working relationships with all the resorts. This allows us to give you the kind of coverage we do here. Hot New Headliners and Concerts Added – Look to your right and check out all the great added events coming to Las Vegas! Why see your favorite concert or a great headliner here in Las Vegas? Let’s compare:
Seeing a concert at home: Get off work, fight traffic home, barely have time to eat, running late, get to the arena and pay huge piles of cash for parking, and get inside after missing the first 15 minutes of the show. Then … fighting traffic out of the lot, getting home all fired up, but too late, no sleep, the alarm goes off the next morning for work and life sucks.
Seeing a concert in Las Vegas: Sleep in and spend the day gambling, golfing, shopping or just catching rays at the pool. Maybe a cat nap then a fantastic meal. A quick walk, monorail, or cab ride to the venue (free parking at casinos if you are driving) and a couple of cocktails and plenty of time to get seated before the show. Then … after the show you and thousands of others are in a great mood and the night has just begun! Hit The Strip or a nightclub, try your luck in the casino or back to the room for romance … with no alarm to set.
So what are you waiting for? Check out all the great listings to your right or click direct to our Las Vegas Entertainment listings.

Fran Cummings, 83, Is No Newcomer To An Evening At La Cage – Floridian’s April 13th visit at Riviera was 479th time she’s taken in her favorite show
You might say Fran Cummings is “An Evening at La Cage’s” No. 1 fan since she’s been attending the show 479 times over the past 20 years and if she gets her way she will make it to see the show for the 500th time.
The Pensacola, Florida native loves Las Vegas describing her area as “swampy with lots of old people.” She said, “I am only 83 and banking on making it to ‘La Cage’ another 21 times to see the show for the 500th time. I was their first groupie when I was only 63. My hairdresser sent me to se ‘La Cage’ in 1985 and said to say hello to Larry Edwards who played Tina Turner.”
She said, “I took my husband John Cummings for our 61st wedding anniversary. He likes the show and says there’s lots of talent compared to some Las Vegas shows. I brought my 75-year-old friend along and she loved ‘La Cage.’ The more you see ‘La Cage’ the more you like it. We became friends with the entire cast over the years.”
Fran said, “Times have changed. When it opened in 1985 there was three shows a night and for $9.95 you could get a steak dinner at Kady’s and two drinks. I was there opening night. The show is so packed they should do two shows a night. The show is better than it’s ever been.”
The current cast is Jimmy Emerson as Tammy Spraynette and Madonna’s Older Sister Brent Allen as Bette Midler and Judy Garland, Sammy Gonzales as Liza Minnelli, Kenneth Blake as Madonna and Dolly Parton, Steven Wayne as Cher and Celine Dion, Chris Woods as Diana Ross and Whitney Houston, Jonathan Kay as Jennifer Lopez, Derrick Berry as Brittney Spears, Ryan Zink as Reba McEntire and Lane Lassiter as Michael Jackson.
Don’t miss “An Evening at La Cage” starring Frank Marino as Joan Rivers at 7:30 p.m. except Tuesday.

The following lodging choices are all within a comfortable walk of the new Wynn resort:

Attention Monorail Riders: You can see Wynn Las Vegas from the monorail, but no stop is close. Get off at Harrah’s and enjoy the walk past The Venetian.

Crazy Girls Showgirl Controversy Puts Riviera On The Map – After 18 years it’s a household name: Makes history as “LV’s Sexiest Topless Revue”
Norbert Aleman, creator and producer of “Crazy Girls,” said, “‘Crazy Girls’ and ‘La Cage’ are the backbone of the Riviera’s entertainment. I began at the Riviera with a 12-week engagement and here we are 18-20 years later. I was told that we would never survive and we faced controversies with the National Organization of Women, Las Vegas City Hall and a powerful state senator and we survived it all. Public opinion was very supportive and we are still here. During the early to mid-’90s ‘Crazy Girls’ was the only show of its type and now there are nine copies of the show in Las Vegas.”
Norbert continued, “When the show began in 1987 we had a predominately male audience and bachelor parties and now it’s Middle America with half couples some women and some men in small groups. That’s how the mores of America are changing. The show has gained wide acceptance. Now the taboo is the (gentleman’s) clubs while the ‘Crazy Girls’ appeals to most adults.”
It all began at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. At 18 years, “Crazy Girls” is the longest running topless cabaret in the history of Las Vegas!
