Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Last week was very hazy here, as a result of the massive California wildfires. Although it made for some beautiful sunsets, the smell of smoke was definitely in the air. Southern California sends a significant percentage of visitors to Las Vegas every year because of the proximity and I imagine we have many, many readers who were either directly affected by the fires or know people who were. Our thoughts are with all of you.

As many of you have seen on the news, long-time Las Vegas resident Robert Goulet passed away earlier this week. Those not familiar with his long career as a performer and singer might know him more recently from his Emerald Nuts commercial.

Goulet was one of a handful of world-renowned entertainers who actually made Las Vegas his home. Even some of the more famous names that perform here regularly at most often just rent a home or stay in a hotel suite just for their run. Jay Leno (Tickets) and Barry Manilow (Tickets) actually fly home every single night. (Yes, Barry Manilow is reported to fly in from his home in Palm Springs every single show. Up to five nights a week).

More importantly, he was involved in the community and extremely well-liked. Our local paper had these two articles:

Lots of reports that Barbra Streisand is coming out of retirement for the opening of Planet Hollywood in a couple of weeks. That is all we know. Do I care? No. Will we let you know more when we know more? Of course!

The redesign of the cocktail waitress uniforms at The Rio (featured in our October 17’th newsletter with photo) prompted a story in the Image section of the Las Vegas Review-Journal about some of the more sexy cocktail outfits in Las Vegas. You can read it (with photos): Ultra-Revealing

The Frontier (officially known as The New Frontier) will be imploded Nov. 13 at 2:30 a.m. This date appears to be very firm. If you have never witnessed a Las Vegas implosion, this may be your last chance in years. With the economy slowing a bit and construction already in progress throughout the next few years schedules on various projects (CityCenter, Frontier replacement, Palazzo), there doesn’t appear to be any new massive scale projects on the horizon that will require implosion of an existing structure.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for a great Newsletter, I get loads of useful and accurate information from AccessVegas.com.

I’ve had eleven holidays in Las Vegas in the last ten years and it gets better every time.

I took this photo of the Stratosphere last September, it’s not my favourite, I’ve got a great one of my husband eating a Fatburger!

Roll on Christmas day, we’re going again for two weeks!

Regards,

Steph Hansen (Salisbury, UK)

Dear Ted,

Thanks again for the latest newsletter. We’re always waiting to get the latest news. All the infos are really useful – regarding our last stays at Vegas. And we’re looking forward to our next visit (next year).

Greetings from Germany,

Oliver and Diana

Coming to Vegas. My partner is a country music fan. Any place in Vegas with country music please? Also, could you recommend any day tours outside Vegas (not very expansive)?

We did Grand Canyon last year. We are also very interested in the Monument Valley, but we know its too far from Vegas to go there. Is there anywhere with something similar to Monument Valley nearer to Vegas or the Colorado River?

Thank You,

Franrow (screen name)

Ted Responds:

The only thing really “country” left on The Strip is Toby Keith’s Bar and Grill at Harrah’s. The people running Gilly’s (formerly at the soon-to-be-imploded) Frontier have opened Stoney’s Rockin’ County. The good news is that it is huge, fun, and you don’t have to be a country fan to enjoy it.

The bad news (for tourists) is that it is down on the “new” South Strip about 7 miles south of Mandalay Bay. To get their on the cheap, you would take The Deuce (public bus that runs The Strip) all the way to where it ends at the South Strip Transfer Center, then transfer to Bus Route 117 for the rest of the ride. Links for this:

Per your tour questions, in 2008 we plan to do much more tour coverage. Many don’t think about the amazing scenic opportunities that are so close to Las Vegas! For those looking for great prices on a huge variety of area tours, we suggest visiting our partners at Travelnice: Travel Nice Tours Page

Let me suggest the following tours (in descending order of price) that may fit your interests:

Hope this helps. Have fun!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Never a dull moment around here. The Venetian’s new Palazzo Tower is topped out and looks finished as a building. They are working around the clock on interior and ground level exterior in preparation for a late December opening.

The resort in part gives this description of what is coming:

The Palazzo Casino Resort will include over 375 concierge-level suites and will also include six villas (up to 11,000 square feet each) which will have 3-4 bedrooms, 3.5-4.5 baths, extensive living areas, media rooms, private pools, private jacuzzis, private salons, massage areas, heated spas, personal gyms and, in some cases, private putting greens.

The presidential suites and the villas will also offer private butler services. The Palazzo hotel will have 296 multi-room suites, including six presidential suites. The Palazzo hotel will also have an elaborate pool deck (with seven pools, gardens, sculptures, cabanas and fountains) and an adjacent spa facility.

Las Vegas Taxi Fares On The Rise – I guess long-hauling you and trying to divert you to places you otherwise didn’t ask to go (so they can get a fat kick-back) just isn’t enough. This according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Beginning Oct. 1, passengers will be charged $3.30 for the initial cost of hiring a cab, or drop fee, a dime increase from the current rate. The cost per hour for the time spent traveling slower than 8-12 mph, known as the wait-time charge, will rise to $28 from $22. Even before the increases approved last month, those fees were higher than similar charges in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Chicago.

Drivers complain they don’t make as much money in Las Vegas as they would elsewhere because of the close proximity of the city’s prime destinations. McCarran International Airport is a four-mile trip to the Strip, and most of the hotels are located within a short drive, Jones noted.

The last paragraph would hold more water if the local cabbies weren’t famous for long-hauling customers on a regular basis (which I discuss and condemn every few months in this column). I’ve been long hauled many times and I’ll share a few of those stories in my next podcast (coming soon). For those wanting to read the full story, go to Taxi fares keep pace with nation’s highest

We have Hanna Montana tickets in all cities of the current tour. Brace yourself because they are resale tickets (pretty much every show sold out instantly) so good seats are going to be a little spendy. However… if your teen or tween watches you go off and enjoy yourself in Las Vegas, this is a great way to spend some time with them and calm some of that guilt! Tickets at Hanna Montana Tickets

Newsletter Going On Hiatus – We are going to take a few weeks off to soak up the sun and watch the off-duty cocktail waitresses sun by our complex pool.

OK, actually we (the staff) will be hard at work making some major upgrades to AccessVegas.com and this newsletter. And we can’t do both at once. So … Coming Soon:

  • We’re splitting this newsletter. It’s just too out-of-control with so much happening in Las Vegas! This version will get back to a focus on tourism: What to do, go, and see. The newsletter we are spinning off will deal with news of gaming, the condo boom, real estate, insider opinion and commentary, and other dirt on what makes Las Vegas tick. You’ll have to sign up for it separately. We’ll let you know how.
  • Expanded, upgraded nightlife and VIP areas of AccessVegas.com where you can buy nightclub passes, get set up for tables and booths (bottle service) with our VIP hosts, or just learn everything you need to know about our city’s famous nightclubs and nightlife.
  • Ted Newkirk will be returning to the helm. As many of you know, toxic residential mold exposure and a “perfect storm” of other environmental issues and mis-diagnosis kept our publisher gravely ill for months. He’s on a long, slow comeback trail and looking forward to getting back in the saddle here on a limited basis.

We here at the newsletter will see you in July, but AccessVegas.com will be going strong so don’t be a stranger! Take the time to surf some of the hundreds of streaming Las Vegas videos or thousands of Las Vegas photos we have online for you.

Scroll down for the Wynn Las Vegas photos and the rest of this issue!

Wynn Las Vegas Photos: Part Two – We now have over 50 new photos of Wynn Las Vegas online taken by Photographer Tom. These in addition to the photos sent in by reader Rick Bobst give us (what we believe is) more photos of Wynn Las Vegas than you’ll find on any other travel website! Click to Wynn Las Vegas photos and don’t forget: Below each photo is a Send As A Postcard link. Send as many as you want to show your friends!

Shop Our Logo Store – Just for being a great guy and sending us some of the first Wynn Las Vegas photos that were made available to the public anywhere, we’re giving reader Rick Bobst his choice of any item in our AccessVegas.com Logo Shop. If you are getting ready for your next trip, or just want something that tells everyone “I Know Las Vegas,” stop by our AccessVegas.com Logo Shop and grab a couple of treats for yourself or that special someone.

Free CD With Ticket Purchase – Our friend Larry G. Jones – Man Of 1002 Voices is offering a free CD with purchase of two tickets online. Click over to Larry G. Jones – Man Of 1002 Voices for details.

July 4’th Fireworks On The StripImportant notice … if you crane your neck on The Strip on July 4’th, you’ll be a day late and a dollar short. OK, hopefully you’ll be a few thousand dollars ahead for the visit but you won’t see any fireworks. The Stratosphere Tower is shooting them off … on July 3’rd.

So we suggest heading up to check out Wynn Las Vegas and then continuing to make your way north around dusk. Because The Strip has a bend in it, you won’t be able to see them south of Treasure Island. Fireworks usually go off around 9 PM when it’s completely dark but that can vary (wind at the top of the Tower delay). Grab a beverage and get yourself out on The Strip, soak up Vegas, and wait for the bangs!

Cook E. Jarr and The Twin Keys – One of our favorite things to do is to hit Harrah’s on a Tuesday or Wednesday because we get to see two of the best lounge/party acts in town, playing steps from each other at Harrah’s!

Twin Keys are Kimberley & Tamara Pinegar. These identical twins take the stage just inside from the Carnival Court Tuesdays – Saturdays from 9 PM to 2 AM. They have you laughing, singing along and dancing in no time. Keeping tradition of the dueling pianos genre, the show is an all-request, sing-along that incorporates audience participation and comedy. Twin Keys plays requests that range from the Andrews Sisters to Aerosmith and AC/DC! Check out their streaming video (not from Harrahs but you get the idea).

Cook E. Jarr is the ultimate showman. He’s the entertainers’ entertainer and he’s at Harrah’s on the fabulous Las Vegas Strip. Cook E. Jarr has been voted Number One lounge performer more times than any other performer in the history of Las Vegas. He is well known for attracting big-name celebrities to his phenomenal performances. Cook E. Jarr, King of America’s Lounges is performing at upstairs at Harrah’s Carnival Court on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 11:00 PM. For more information and to hear streaming sound clips of his live show, visit our Cook E. Jarr – Las Vegas Legend page.

Chef Live … From Las Vegas – Over time, we’ve talked about this exciting new concept in streaming video and our friends at Chef Live are on a roll! Their Board of Directors is a literal who’s who of famous Las Vegas Chefs, they have already launched their first show locally, and things are going national and international soon. We’ve been involved with the development of Chef Live for almost five years and are thrilled to see it come together!

END OF LEGAL PROSTITUTION? – Contrary to popular belief, prostitution is very illegal in Clark County (the New Jersey – sized county containing the Las Vegas Metro area, Laughlin, Primm, and Mesquite). However, it has thrived for decades 60 miles away in Nye County. With its quieter lifestyle, inexpensive housing, and close proximity to Las Vegas, Nye County is growing like mad and community residents are circulating a petition to ban legal prostitution. FEATURE STORY: Crazy Girls

crazy-girls-02.jpg (11569 bytes)This is an hour of old style burlesque and raunchy comedy that doesn’t pretend to be anything else. The costumes and sets change as the dancers “sing” (the voices are taped) and dance to both modern hit songs as well as a couple of vintage “tongue-in-cheek” numbers. Except for the first set, they are topless throughout the entire show.

Carole Montgomery is the MC and also performs short comedy pieces during set and costume changes. Her style? Think of a female version of the shock comedian Andrew “Dice” Clay. The talk is all sex, and nothing is sacred. It was “revenge” of a sort, with many of the jokes having the women howling with laughter poking fun at men.

crazy-girls-03.jpg (11802 bytes)If you are coming to town, you promised your wife you wouldn’t go to a strip club (probably a good idea — those places are designed to part you with your money faster than the roulette table), and you and the guys are looking for something a little racy, this fits the bill. There were also a significant number of couples who seemed to be enjoying the show quite a bit. In an age of “child friendly” Las Vegas and production shows for all ages, this does put some of the sin back in “Sin City.”

Crazy Girls is presented at the Riviera twice nightly (extra late show on Saturday) except dark Monday. Tickets are $19.25 plus fees. More info and online ticket purchase available at http://www.vegasguide.com/detail_shows.cfm?ID=10&amid=143&cscheme=5

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

This week, a letter from the editor!

Because I make my living online, people regularly express concerns and ask me about purchasing things on the internet. In fact, a recent national publication poll noted that 41% of all people online don’t buy online because they are scared their credit card number and info will be stolen. I answer by saying …

Let’s look at two purchases — one online and one off:

1. Offline – You see an infomercial on TV, something you like in a catalog, or book a hotel room over the phone (after spending hours on the phone checking rates, the time on hold, the processing time, etc.). You call up and talk to a near minimum wage employee whom you will never meet, and you reveal your name, address, phone number, credit card number and expiration date to this live human.

2. Online – You go to a site like http://www.mysimon.com (not an advertiser, just an example) or our partner Hotel Reservations Network at http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/pickcity?SID=IVC&LKF=IVC where you can compare the lowest prices for a product in one click. A computer confirms availability instantly. You enter your sensitive information and it is securely delivered to another computer (not a human) who confirms it with a third computer at the credit card company, approves the purchase, and confirms your purchase about 90 seconds after clicking the “buy” button.

I realize that many will say “you are biased because of your business,” but it’s actually the other way around. A number of years ago, I worked for a shipping company who fired an employee for using customer credit card info to call phone sex numbers. Besides the speed and ease, I doubt that a computer somewhere is going to run off and commit fraud with your credit card! Also, I was booking all my airline flights online well before I signed any deals to offer online reservations.

I have met people who have been victims of credit card fraud, but none from an online transaction. I comfortably have purchased books, office supplies, furniture, sundries and more online the past year without a glitch. Just food for thought next time you worry about online security!

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

ONLINE POLL – “Do you believe a cocktail waitress job involves there looks?” Let’s hear your opinions at http://www.accessvegas.com — results will be published next week! This is controversial — remember you are anonymous when you vote. I’m simply going to report the results.

Coming soon … free tickets to Viva Las Vegas at The Sands. No misprint here. I have two mint condition tickets to this long-running Las Vegas show from back when it was at The Sands. I’m working on a good contest to give these rare collectibles away.

FEATURE STORY: Shark Reef

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-2.jpg (24789 bytes)Have you ever been to one of those seaside aquariums? “Baby, this ain’t one of those.” Mandalay Bay’s new Shark Reef features some of the most exotic and dangerous aquatic animals in the world and puts you right in the middle of it. They have built one of North America’s largest displays of sharks and other salt water predators.

The first part of the tour is through a tropical jungle, complete with lush green surroundings. You weave your way through a maze of a number of reptile displays, giving you possibly the closest ever safe look you’ll ever have at these intimidating creatures.

From there, you continue to walk through what looks like an ancient temple that has been claimed by the sea, eventually ending up underwater in part of a wrecked ship, surrounded by 1.6 million gallons of ocean water right here in the middle of our desert. These dangerous sharks, schools of fish, and displays of some of the most exotic marine life known to man aren’t just beside you, but above and below you as you walk through clear walls, floors and tunnels. (For the claustrophobic, let me note that the central rooms in the aquarium are very large — this isn’t like being stuck in an elevator).

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-3.jpg (27099 bytes)Shark Reef includes almost 100 different species including:

Sharks: Include blacktip reef sharks, bonnethead sharks, nurse sharks and lemon sharks. Some species of sharks at Shark Reef will grow to be more than 12 feet long.

Tropical and Fresh Water Fish: Include several species of angelfish, puffer fish and tang fish. Venomous tropical fishes include such species as the radiated lionfish and coral catfish.

Reptiles: Crocodiles, green sea turtles and ravenous water monitors are among the reptile species displayed at Shark Reef.

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-4.jpg (27925 bytes)Eels/Marine Invertebrates/Rays: Eels, invertebrates and rays each have exhibits to showcase their species at Shark Reef Moray eels, southern stingrays and hundreds of moon jellyfish are among these creatures.

We have a few minor complaints. Shark Reef is quite a hike from the main casino area (past the pool, the arena, convention area and then a little farther). They are looking to expand the resort in that part of the property, which will eventually feature a duplicate of their guests-only swimming area that will be open to the public. We hope they have some airport style people movers in the plans also.

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-5.jpg (15684 bytes)There are flat screen monitors throughout the display but they don’t say much. Perhaps more informative multimedia displays are planned. Also, the $12.95 price was drawing a few grumbles from people at the ticket booth (although none once they were inside). Perhaps a $10 ticket price in line with the Secret Gardens of Siegfried and Roy would be in order. (Our Secret Garden review with photos is available at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-12-01.htm ).

Still, it is a pretty captivating experience and if you have even a remote interest in natures more exotic displays, it will be money well spent. There were plenty of children and teens who were thoroughly enjoying it but it left us adults just as much in awe.

Shark Reef is at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Open daily from 10 AM until 11 PM, admission is $12.95. Children 12 and under and Nevada residents with ID are $9.95.
