Hello From Las Vegas! Plenty of hot new information this issue. A couple of regular features are missing due to the July 4 holiday, but we never halt bringing you tons of great Las Vegas information. Read on!

Imperial Palace Update – A number of you wrote in saying “I have reservations later this year at the Imperial Palace and am worried what will happen if they close it sooner!”

I contacted our friend Rhonda at I4Vegas (the company that handles the reservations if you use the booking box search on our site). She said this:

“I’m sure they will know a closing date so far in advance that existing reservations will not be affected, but should that be the case, you would be given comparable or upgraded accommodations at no additional cost. Just for your information, they do also own Harrah’s, Bally’s, Flamingo, Paris and Caesars all in that same area of the Strip.”

If you didn’t make your reservations with us, you may wish to contact the customer service contact with wherever you made your reservations to find out their policy. We try to be as helpful as we can, but if (for example) you buy an Acura and you have a concern, it won’t do you any good to ask the people at the Lexus dealership. My point: We can’t speak to the policy of other companies.

The CityCenter of attention – MGM Mirage unveils model of its $7 billion mixed-use megaproject – As Bill McBeath sees it, the last thing Las Vegas needs is another hotel-casino. And on Monday, McBeath, president and chief operating officer of MGM Mirage’s Bellagio, showed media and gaming-industry watchers just how far beyond the traditional Strip-resort concept his company is going with its $7 billion Project CityCenter. Hi Ted,

I truly enjoy the newsletter. I am curious about 1 thing though – does everyone try and get something for nothing in Vegas? I love Vegas make no mistake. I have played everything from penny slots up to and including black and purple checks on the craps table. Other than drinks, I have never ever taken a comp for anything. Nor do I intend to.

I come to play – not collect freebies. Last thing I want is some casino toadie looking over my shoulder offering me a room or a dinner. I gamble to gamble. I don’t want gifts – I want to be left alone. If I want a suite, I’ll pay for it.

All I want is a room where I get no phone calls, no one bothering me and no distractions. I’ll buy my own dinner thank you. If you are comping me dinner to the gourmet room, chances are it will be more crowded than anyplace I want to be. Let me alone and I’ll win or lose 5 figures, try and comp me and I will walk out the door. Just my nature,

Ted Responds – Thanks for reading! No question that many want to enjoy all the freebies they can, although it comes at a price to a higher limit player such as yourself. They want to track your play, get your home address, cell phone number, run your credit and practically name your first born in return for the higher level comps (free suites, fine dining, top show tickets all on the house).

That comes with a price. Your new “best friend” is the casino host at the place you frequent. It is nice to have them inviting you out to Vegas all the time with the comps, but in reality it is their job to get you locked in. Visiting only their place as often as possible while keeping you away from the competition. In addition, two risks come to mind:

  1. Comps are not actually free. They are based on your play. The more money you are likely to lose, and the more often you come and visit (creating more losing visits in the big picture), the more stuff they give you. But it is only a fraction of what they expect you to lose over the course of your many visits.á

  2. Familiarity breeds contempt. For years, I had a friend come to town and toss some pretty serious money around playing at one of the major Strip properties. He only stayed there no matter what. Over time, he noticed that his treatment wasn’t as good as it used to be and the comps weren’t as generous.What should he have done? Taken his action to other hotels, told them he was a longtime Hotel X customer but he wanted to see what they could do for him. They would have rolled out the red carpet! But alas my friend felt obligated by his “friendship” to the host of Hotel X and just kept visiting and being disappointed.

Note: Hotel hosts are not nor every will they be your friend. Their job is to get you to visit often enough to separate you (over the years) from as much of your money as possible. And they succeed because since you want to keep your comp level up (and keep the freebies and their “friendship” intact), most people tend to gamble more than they normally would have.

How much more? When all is said and done, they gamble away more to stay in the host’s good graces than it would have cost just to buy the suite, buy the fine dining, and buy excellent tickets to a show (fight, whatever) from a broker!

This is not a blanket condemnation of casino hosts or those of you who gamble lots of cash and expect good comps. Just remember that it is you against them, and plenty of competing properties want your business. Your host does his job, which is to try to keep you happy. But your job is to be a smart customer, not afraid to take your business across the street in search of a better deal (better treatment, more comps).

Many choose to go Dicedoc’s route: No pressure from the host, no pressure to gamble a certain number of hours per day, no pressure to stay at only a certain hotels. And for those of you that gamble at the higher levels, this might be a great time to review what’s going on. Are you happy with your host? Have you had some bad losses trying to put in the expected number of hours where the money would have better been spent paying for your suite and only gambling when you feel in a “lucky” mood?

I’m not here to take sides. Have nothing against casino hosts. Use them wisely if you use them. Just reminding all our readers who play higher-end to that you have many options.

Hello From Las Vegas! Weather was in the 80’s this past week, with a storm (cooler and very windy … no rain) blowing in for the weekend. Goes to figure … doesn’t it? It has passed, and we are still looking at temps in the 80’s (F) for the rest of the month. The pools are open!

Girls Night Out – Our entertainment calendar editor Amy (who works so hard to keep all the concert listings updated) called me a while back and said “Ted … I have nine friends coming out from Michigan … all girls I grew up with. Can you set us up?” Amy does a great job, so set her up, I did. We sent them all to American Storm then on to Tryst (nightclub) at Wynn Las Vegas for a great girls night out. She reported back and you can read it in this issue.

Readers Write – Dear Sir/Madam,

I have just recently returned from a ten night holiday to my favourite city, if not place ever – Vegas!

This trip was my eighth and it just keeps getting better and better. As well as the rounds of all the glamorous hotels and casinos, we also took in a few shows Rick Thomas, and Mac King.

Over the years I have found Imperial Palace suits my budget the best and is also in the best location on the strip, one tip though if you are considering staying you can never get anywhere quickly inside as the elevators are always very busy. This year we were on floor 11 and some times we could be waiting for 15 to 20 minutes for one. On the casino floor the wait is sometimes just as long so always leave plenty of time if you have places to go.

My favourite places in Vegas are Voodoo Lounge at the Rio and the Peppermill Inn, great locations, great looking staff (both male and female) and very tasty cocktails.

During my stay I walked into Joan Rivers in The Stardust, queued up for Slyvester Stallone’s autograph and also saw Sly and Sugar Ray Leonard walking through Cafe Lago in Ceasars ( they were going to the final of The Contender). This is the first time I have seen anyone famous in Vegas and it was cool. I will definitely be going back next year to do some more star spotting.

Ted Responds – Lorna … what a great letter! Rick Thomas and Mac King are both well worth seeing … and are two Vegas show that continue to be reasonably priced. Many love the Imperial Palace because it has a fantastic location for the money. Fortunately, it looks like they won’t be tearing it down very soon. We’ll go into all of that in our next streaming broadcast/podcast (which is coming very soon)!

Voodoo Lounge is amazing … a perfect view of The Strip. For those who have never been, we have a streaming video preview that they can enjoy of Voodoo Lounge at The Rio: Broadband or Dial-Up.

Well, it looks as though conventional magic and traditional punch line comedy have viciously been tossed out a 20 story hotel casino. Their replacements? Shameful jokes, psychic strippers, humiliated audience members, bad karate theatre, and the revival of the lost art of foam magic. The perpetrator? The Amazing Johnathan.

When it comes to competitive top Las Vegas shows, a comic magician who is undyingly abrasive with absolutely no sense of shame could be a recipe for disaster. But in Johnathan&’s show, where nothing is sacred and no act too vile, this guy is just pure genius. Click to read the complete review …

Bye-Bye Boardwalk – After almost 40 years on the Las Vegas Strip the Boardwalk hotel-casino is now officially closed. The MGM-Mirage is tearing down the property to build Project City Center. The $5 billion development is expected to open in 2010. It will include a 60-story, 4,000-room hotel-casino, boutique hotels, a major shopping mall and more than 1,600 luxury condominiums. Purple Reign Moves To Monte Carlo – In related news, Boardwalk regular performers Purple Reign (Prince Tribute Show) have moved to the Monte Carlo, where they recreate the sights and sounds of Prince at the Monte Carlo Pub and Brewery every Wednesday at 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. There is no cover charge and patrons must be at least 21 years of age.

Purple Reign takes the audience on a musical journey of some of Prince&’s greatest hits. The group&’s repertoire includes popular songs such as &”Let’s Go Crazy,&” &”You’ve Got the Look,&” &”Kiss,&” &”Take Me With You,&” &”Raspberry Beret,&” &”Little Red Corvette,&” &”1999&” and &”Purple Rain.&” One of Las Vegas’ hottest nightspots, the Monte Carlo Pub & Brewery is one of the largest microbreweries in the country.

A New Day For Legends in Concert – Celine Dion Joins Celebrity Tribute Spectacular – There’s a new day coming with Brigitte Valdez returning as Celine Dion in “Legends in Concert,” the award-winning celebrity tribute at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. The Most Extravagant and Expensive Burger Experience Ever Conceived – In the land of $100 margaritas and $1,000 shots of whiskey, it should come as no surprise that Las Vegas is now home to an extravagant burger-eating experience to rival all others. Renowned Chef Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay presents FleurBurger 5000, a gastronomic jackpot. Sexiest Shows in Vegas – Fantasy at Luxor Tops the List AOL cityguide recently voted Fantasy at Luxor the &”Sexiest Show in Vegas!&” Set in Luxor&’s 350-seat Atrium Showroom, this provocative adult revue brings fantasies to life with the sizzling Fantasy dancers. Choreographed by Cris Judd and Eddie Garcia and produced by Emmy-award winner Anita Mann, Fantasy features sultry costumes and delicious dance numbers that tempt audiences with just the right amount of seduction.

Fantasy wasn&’t the only MGM MIRAGE show to make the list: La Femme at MGM Grand, straight from the Crazy Horse in Paris, holds the number three spot, while those sexy Aussies of Thunder From Down Under at Excalibur and Cirque du Soleil&’s Zumanity at New York-New York made #9 and #10 respectively.

Castaways Goes Boom – The old Castaways hotel-casino is no more. The 19-story off-Strip hotel — which used to be known as the Showboat — was imploded shortly after 7 a.m. this morning about three miles east of downtown Las Vegas. The casino had closed in January 2004 after changing hands in bankruptcy court. The Tropicana’s very own Dirk Arthur lives up to his “extreme” reputation in the most outrageous ways a Las Vegas magic show could dream: big cats, helicopters, trains, and heart pumping theatrical effects. Dirk Arthur has added some extra quality ingredients to the already renowned mind-boggling illusions. “Crazy Girl” From Poland Returns – The Polish “Crazy Girl” has returned to the show at the Riviera Hotel & Casino after a two-year hiatus and is surprised at the growth of Las Vegas.

Hello From Las Vegas …and long time no see! We put the newsletter on hiatus while we’ve been doing some extensive expanding and improving of AccessVegas.com. More insider information, more giveaways, more stuff to do and see. We’ll detail much of it in this newsletter issue!

Insider Vibe – As you can see, we’ve changed the newsletter name as we prepare to split our content into two newsletters. This newsletter will continue to cover visitor information with your usual insider aspect. On a personal note, a big thanks to all the encouraging notes throughout the year as I battle back from some severe health issues. Never thought at the “ripe old age” of 39 I’d be dealing with a major health problem (long-term toxic household mold exposure and lasting immune system complications … mold can kill). I have a ways to go, but I’m improving every week, happy to be “back in the saddle” and as excited as ever about my city … Las Vegas!

Neil Sedaka“I’m the king of Tra La La’s and Doo Wop’s,” Sedaka humbly confessed.

It looks as though even after 4 decades of recording, Neil Sedaka is still able to make a rose-tossing full house at The Orleans cry and sing along to “Breaking up is Hard to do.” The truth is, no matter which age or demographic one belongs to; the heavy weight Pop pioneer will belt out some velvet anthem of which everyone knows the words.

His name sounds familiar to at least everyone with a record player, but who is Neil Sedaka? Oh just another face in the music industry; one of which had his songs recorded by the lesser known Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Not to mention a managing hand launching the careers of Neil Diamond, Carole King, and Paul Simon. But no one should assume his seasoned career would give him any less energy on stage now than 40 years ago. The man can soft shoe and sing smooth hits as though it’s his first day in showbiz. Anthony Cools – The Uncensored Hypnotist

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be hypnotized? How about in front of a couple hundred people whom you then proceed to entertain for the next hour or so with the “suggestions” given by the hilariously funny Anthony Cools – The Uncensored Hypnotist? Let’s just say I’m glad that “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

Anthony Cools The Uncensored Hypnotist Paris Las VegasMy friends and I went to see Cools perform at Paris Las Vegas for “Girls Night Out” and we could not have asked for a better show to see. It was so funny and my friends laughed so hysterically, they cried. I wasn’t quite as privy to this hilarity at the time, because I was elected in my group to be one of the volunteers and was therefore part of the entertainment.

The show started off with a disclaimer announcing all of the four (and more) letter words that would be used during the show, and to get out if you didn’t like to hear them. Hello from Las Vegas! We ran into Magician Steve Wyrick shooting new scenes for his magic show outside The Aladdin on Tuesday night. (Hint: It involves a yellow Hummer). If you were on The Strip and saw what looked like a movie shoot in front of The Aladdin, that was it. After years at The Sahara (where location hurt his visibility), he’s having a great run at The Aladdin.

Monorail Is Running! – The monorail’s first day in service has been greeted by stormy skies and rain, but it isn’t dampening the enthusiasm. Las Vegas has often been called “Disneyland for adults” and now we finally have our own monorail as well!

Finally, you can get up and down The Strip without sitting in traffic while the taxi meter climbs unmercifully. We’ll have a full report with photos and streaming video very soon. In the meantime, here are some links to all the info you need:

Thanksgiving Weekend – is Nov. 27 – 30. Almost all of the hotel restaurants from the buffets to the fine dining houses host a Thanksgiving menu, and the town is full of people taking advantage of a four day weekend. Free Las Vegas Golf Lessons – and you can take them from anywhere in the world! We’ve teamed up with Revere Anthem Golf Club Director of Instruction Chris Eastman (in conjunction with ChefLive.com) and put together a series of eight streaming video golf tips.

Chris starts with fundamentals like aim and grip, and works through some of the finer points of the game. We’ll be posting a new lesson every week and reminding you here in the newsletter.

X-Scream – thrill ride has opened on top of the Stratosphere Tower. X-Scream tilts you 30 feet over the edge as it plunges you toward the ground almost 1000 feet below! Hint: Buy the “all day pass” if you go up to ride the Stratosphere rides. For about the price of riding any of the rides thee or four times, you can go again and again and again. And if you are like me, you’ll want to!

Sirens of TI – has replaced the old Pirate Show at Treasure Island. OK, ok … we are supposed to call it TI. The show is supposed to be better than the previous one. The “new” TI is supposed to be young and hip like The Palms or Hard Rock. I think the less-than-tepid applause after a recent “Sirens” show said it all.

The new Sirens are great eye candy for the guys (I enjoyed that part), but trying to do a short form production show using props meant for a previous show to an audience too far away to enjoy the subtleties fell a little flat. But hey … the price is right: Free performances nightly at 6:00, 8:00, and 10:00 p.m.

MGM-Mirage is reportedly considering doing away with the Mirage’s south seas theme. What look are they going to go after? Green Valley Ranch? Hey … their executives are making more than I am so they must know something I don’t.

New Year’s Eve Concerts – The list is getting longer and longer, and we are posting them as we get the news. Check out our December 2003 Entertainment Calendar. What … you don’t know how hot New Year’s Eve is here in Las Vegas? We have the insider tips, and plenty of free photos and streaming video from past years on our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve site!

Veterens Eat Free – McCormick & Schmick’s is offering all veterans free lunch or dinner (designated menu itens, served with coffee or tea) this Tuesday Nov. 11 in celebration of Veteren’s Day. Veterens ID or discharge papers required. You can reserve ahead at 702-836-9000. McCormick & Schmick’s is a fine dining restaurant. New Mandalay Bay Tower – is already gracing the sky (under construction). Simply called The Hotel, this 43 story tower will feature softer colors and a south seas theme. (Hmmmm … the same theme Mirage is thinking of dumping). A restaurant and lounge on top will be open to the public and feature a stunning Strip view. The hotel will have it’s own check in area and two restaurants (including a 24/7 coffee shop) essentially creating a stand alone hotel.

Video Spotlight – We are always adding new streaming video to our All Vegas TV site, over 100 Las Vegas videos to date! This week, we feature video of the Ambassador Strip Travelodge. Who? What? A Motel 6???

No … no, no, no! “If I can bring some laughs into their life, I feel I am doing my small part for our great country” says Hypnolarious Star Terry Stokes. He and sidekick Deogee the Hypno Pup will star in an episode of “Absolutely Pets” on ABC this December.

Event runs through July 27 (except July 6).

I mean a true Las Vegas show with beautiful topless showgirls, singers, dancers, and specialty acts where you get some serious bang for your buck. Hello from Las Vegas! We visited the Crazy Girls show last week. We haven’t seen it since comedian Joe Trammel took over hosting duties. The show dancers are now even a more risquÚ. Plus, Trammel spoofs everthing from Richard Simmons to Lord Of The Dance and his quick-paced comedy was great.

Crazy Girls is a must for “guys night out” but still plenty sensual enough for couples. The night we went, couples made up the bulk of the audience, including one who had been married for over 50 years! Talk about keeping spice in the marriage! Britney Spears Sunning At Palms – Rumors are floating around about Britney Spears and Palms owner George Maloof. Premium Seating for “O” – Cirque Du Soleil’s “O” continues to be regarded as the most impressive, outstanding show in Las Vegas. And while there truly isn’t a bad seat in the specially designed theatre, this show sells out well in advance and any ticket (let alone the best seats) can be tough if you don’t act early.
