Hello From Las Vegas! Summer is wrapping up and it’s been a very cool summer compared to last year. I guess the heat went other places in the United States as last year we were facing somewhat regular 112+ temps here in Las Vegas, and this summer it has been around our average high of 104.

However … if our summer temps are too hot for you, now is the time to think ahead and book for later this fall when many areas start getting very cool while we are still warm and sunny. Book now before others start thinking about a late fall escape and drive up the room rates. If you live in a cold weather climate, you’ll be glad you did!

This follow up story about local cab drivers over-charging people by taking the the long way is a must print out for the following reason: It has the phone number of the Taxi Authority. This is a “must have” for all Las Vegas visitors.

If you run across a cab driver who diverts you to a club or night spot you didn’t initially request, takes to to The Strip or Downtown using the airport tunnel (without asking you first), who won’t take you the route of your choice, is driving dangerously or otherwise not acting in a professional manner, take action.

Note their name (displayed in the cab) or at the very least note the cab number and company when you are done with your ride, and call the Taxi Authority and register a complaint. They do listen and take action! When specific drivers get multiple complaints registered against them, they can get fined or worse.

When I first heard about this show, I was thinking this is some serious double entendre. So if I read my double meanings with a sexual implication, this show should be about beautiful girls and fancy cars. In fact, it should be by its implication a topless show with a minimal amount of clothes.

I am not a huge antique car fan. So I was thinking this is going to be just another topless show. Well, it’s not just another topless show. It is certainly not your run of the mill topless show. There are in fact cars I liked in this show. There was a pre-1960 Ford Thunderbird featured during a Beach Boys tune, Fun, Fun, Fun Till Her Daddy Takes Her T-bird Away or whatever that tune is entitled. There is a song about a Pink Cadillac and several other Rock N Roll standards about cars and women. My favorite car was probably a mid-60s Pontiac GTO. There were also Corvettes and Chevy Bel Aires. Barry also posed for photos. The expanded store offers (in addition to the previously popular items such as Barry bobble heads and Manilow calendars and towels) the new M Line of fragrances, which includes a womanÆs perfume, unisex cologne, and candles for the home. The fresh M Line will also introduce a new section for M Line Wine, which will include Cabernet, Zinfandel and Pinot Grigio wines as well as glassware, wine chocolates and accessories. Hello From Las Vegas! Weather was in the 80’s this past week, with a storm (cooler and very windy … no rain) blowing in for the weekend. Goes to figure … doesn’t it? It has passed, and we are still looking at temps in the 80’s (F) for the rest of the month. The pools are open!

Girls Night Out – Our entertainment calendar editor Amy (who works so hard to keep all the concert listings updated) called me a while back and said “Ted … I have nine friends coming out from Michigan … all girls I grew up with. Can you set us up?” Amy does a great job, so set her up, I did. We sent them all to American Storm then on to Tryst (nightclub) at Wynn Las Vegas for a great girls night out. She reported back and you can read it in this issue.

I have just recently returned from a ten night holiday to my favourite city, if not place ever – Vegas!

This trip was my eighth and it just keeps getting better and better. As well as the rounds of all the glamorous hotels and casinos, we also took in a few shows Rick Thomas, and Mac King.

Over the years I have found Imperial Palace suits my budget the best and is also in the best location on the strip, one tip though if you are considering staying you can never get anywhere quickly inside as the elevators are always very busy. This year we were on floor 11 and some times we could be waiting for 15 to 20 minutes for one. On the casino floor the wait is sometimes just as long so always leave plenty of time if you have places to go.

My favourite places in Vegas are Voodoo Lounge at the Rio and the Peppermill Inn, great locations, great looking staff (both male and female) and very tasty cocktails.

During my stay I walked into Joan Rivers in The Stardust, queued up for Slyvester Stallone’s autograph and also saw Sly and Sugar Ray Leonard walking through Cafe Lago in Ceasars ( they were going to the final of The Contender). This is the first time I have seen anyone famous in Vegas and it was cool. I will definitely be going back next year to do some more star spotting.

Ted Responds – Lorna … what a great letter! Rick Thomas and Mac King are both well worth seeing … and are two Vegas show that continue to be reasonably priced. Many love the Imperial Palace because it has a fantastic location for the money. Fortunately, it looks like they won’t be tearing it down very soon. We’ll go into all of that in our next streaming broadcast/podcast (which is coming very soon)!

Voodoo Lounge is amazing … a perfect view of The Strip. For those who have never been, we have a streaming video preview that they can enjoy of Voodoo Lounge at The Rio: Broadband or Dial-Up.

Hello From Las Vegas! Super Bowl weekend was huge, with about 285,000 people in town, and it seems like everybody had a bet on the game. I have little interest in either team and simply bet for fun. In Nevada, we call it a “TV bet” when you bet on a game just to have some rooting interest. I lost my bet (Seattle to win +165 … that means I picked Seattle to win and would have been paid $165 for every $100 I bet … getting a bonus for taking the underdog) but had fun watching the game.

Carrot Top Review: I Can’t Believe I
Watched the Whole Show, and I Liked It!

Carrot Top las vegas hotels hiltonHow long has Carrot Top been around and how famous is he? I don’t have a clue about the answer to those questions, and his web site certainly didn’t help me find out information. Carrot Top may be a publicity hound, but what does that have to do with his show? Nothing I guess. I enjoyed watching this show and I was surprised.

Carrot Top does annoying commercials, kind of looks like the Wendy’s girl as he brings up in his show, but he is a unique type of comic. He is what I call a prop comic. I have seen this before in Las Vegas with a comic by the name of Joe Trammel. But Carrot Top is much more accomplished and has about four trunks of props he goes through during a show, maybe more. Volcano Time Change At The Mirage – The Mirage volcano now erupts at the top of each hour from 6 p.m. to midnight. Each night the explosive show transforms a dramatic waterfall in front of The Mirage into a spectacular, flame-throwing volcano with molten streams of lava. More than 3,000 computerized lights create this nightly optical illusion. The nightly show is free to the public.

Hello From Las Vegas! And a very, very Happy New year to all! As usual, the entire Las Vegas Strip was closed to traffic with $500,000 worth of fireworks going of the rooftops of hotels from Excalibur to Stratosphere, assuring that everybody had a spectacular show. We’ll link to streaming video later in this issue.

Ohioan Wins Wheel of Fortune at Imperial Palace – Thanksgiving vacationer hits quarter Megajackpot for $448,714.95. Five spins of a Wheel of Fortune machine at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino and Jennifer Peculis was in shock: she had just won $448,714.95. The 28-year-old Ohioan and her fiance, Ben, had enjoyed a long Thanksgiving weekend at the Imperial Palace and had already checked out Monday morning. But their flight was not until late afternoon, so Peculis was trying her luck at a Wheel of Fortune Megajackpot quarter machine.

She had already played two others before trying the third with $10. Less than five minutes later, she won the progressive jackpot on the most popular slot machine game of all time. “I saw the first Wheel of Fortune symbol, then up came the second and by the time the third came up it was a blur,” Peculis said. She was so excited, she didn’t even realize at first how much she had won. Peculis said she plans to pay off her house, her car and student loans, “And still have a lot left over,” she added. Stardust Go Boom? – Boyd Gaming Corp. unveiled plans on Wednesday for a $4 billion hotel, retail and casino development in Las Vegas to open in early 2010. The development, Echelon Place, will be built on a 63-acre site on the Las Vegas Strip, the company said. It will include four hotels featuring 5,300 guest rooms and suites. The Las Vegas site is currently occupied by the Stardust, which the company said it will operate through 2006.

The $4 billion Echelon Place development will feature the $2.9 billion wholly-owned Echelon Resort, which includes a tower with 2,600 rooms, another tower 700 suites, a 140,000 square foot casino and 25 restaurants and bars. The development will also include deals with partners for other hotels and entertainment facilities.

Reba Plays The Hilton, Multiple 2006 Dates – The Las Vegas Hilton has signed Reba McEntire to a multi-week engagement in 2006. The superstar begins the first part of her engagement on Wednesday, May 3, 2006.

“The Las Vegas Hilton, home of Barry Manilow, now welcomes another legend to our resort, continuing entertainment as a key element for this classic property,” said Ken Ciancimino, executive vice president of the Las Vegas Hilton. “This agreement with Reba McEntire, a superstar with great crossover appeal, enhances our outstanding entertainment lineup for 2006, solidifying the Las Vegas Hilton brand and the Resorts International brand overall.” The formal announcement of the agreement was made today at a news conference at the property featuring McEntire. The “Key to the Heart” concert series is presented by Whirlpool to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Reba has helped to raise awareness for Habitat on a personal and professional level for some time. OK, actually we (the staff) will be hard at work making some major upgrades to AccessVegas.com and this newsletter. And we can’t do both at once. So … Coming Soon:

  • We’re splitting this newsletter. It’s just too out-of-control with so much happening in Las Vegas! This version will get back to a focus on tourism: What to do, go, and see. The newsletter we are spinning off will deal with news of gaming, the condo boom, real estate, insider opinion and commentary, and other dirt on what makes Las Vegas tick. You’ll have to sign up for it separately. We’ll let you know how.
  • Expanded, upgraded nightlife and VIP areas of AccessVegas.com where you can buy nightclub passes, get set up for tables and booths (bottle service) with our VIP hosts, or just learn everything you need to know about our city’s famous nightclubs and nightlife.
  • Ted Newkirk will be returning to the helm. As many of you know, toxic residential mold exposure and a “perfect storm” of other environmental issues and mis-diagnosis kept our publisher gravely ill for months. He’s on a long, slow comeback trail and looking forward to getting back in the saddle here on a limited basis.

July 4’th Fireworks On The Strip – Important notice … if you crane your neck on The Strip on July 4’th, you’ll be a day late and a dollar short. OK, hopefully you’ll be a few thousand dollars ahead for the visit but you won’t see any fireworks. The Stratosphere Tower is shooting them off … on July 3’rd.

So we suggest heading up to check out Wynn Las Vegas and then continuing to make your way north around dusk. Because The Strip has a bend in it, you won’t be able to see them south of Treasure Island. Fireworks usually go off around 9 PM when it’s completely dark but that can vary (wind at the top of the Tower delay). Grab a beverage and get yourself out on The Strip, soak up Vegas, and wait for the bangs!

Cook E. Jarr and The Twin Keys – One of our favorite things to do is to hit Harrah’s on a Tuesday or Wednesday because we get to see two of the best lounge/party acts in town, playing steps from each other at Harrah’s!

Twin Keys are Kimberley & Tamara Pinegar. These identical twins take the stage just inside from the Carnival Court Tuesdays – Saturdays from 9 PM to 2 AM. They have you laughing, singing along and dancing in no time. Keeping tradition of the dueling pianos genre, the show is an all-request, sing-along that incorporates audience participation and comedy. Twin Keys plays requests that range from the Andrews Sisters to Aerosmith and AC/DC! Check out their streaming video (not from Harrahs but you get the idea).

Cook E. Jarr is the ultimate showman. He’s the entertainers’ entertainer and he’s at Harrah’s on the fabulous Las Vegas Strip. Cook E. Jarr has been voted Number One lounge performer more times than any other performer in the history of Las Vegas. He is well known for attracting big-name celebrities to his phenomenal performances. Cook E. Jarr, King of America’s Lounges is performing at upstairs at Harrah’s Carnival Court on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 11:00 PM. California Woman Hits Wheel of Fortune Jackpot for $1.1 Million At Sam’s Town – Betty Cagle of Pioneer, Calif., didn’t need to buy a vowel to spell J-A-C-K-P-O-T. Cagle, 66, had been sitting at the 25-cent Wheel of Fortune machine at Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall for five minutes when she hit a progressive jackpot for $1.1 million on Monday night. Cagle had played just $20 when she hit the jackpot. She said her plans are to pay off her house and take a long-dreamed-of trip to Alaska.

Wynn Backlash? – Possibly the biggest media rumble in the modern megaresort era have been quick to point out the problems with Wynn Las Vegas and the Le Reve show. Mr. Wynn had to really stick his neck out on this one to get the enormous financing needed, and people love to cut down what stands tallest. Resorts take 30-90 days to “shake down” after opening. Playboy Opens First U.S. Based Boutique At Forum Shops – Playboy Enterprises, Inc. has opened its first freestanding Playboy Concept Boutique in the United States at The Forum Shops at Caesars in Las Vegas. The 2,000 square-foot upscale shopping destination offers a collection of Playboy apparel, accessories and lingerie.

The Las Vegas location also will offer one-of-a-kind Playboy memorabilia items, select artwork, and vintage product from Playboy’s vast archives. The Las Vegas store will be used as a template for Playboy’s future stores, as well as retail concessions and lingerie areas. Other design details that enable shoppers to immerse themselves in the Playboy lifestyle include a plasma-screen video wall featuring archival and contemporary footage and a customized pebble cash-point countertop inspired by rocks from the famed Playboy Mansion Grotto.

Evoking the sexiness of the Playboy brand a stand-alone lingerie area sells Playboy’s playful “Pink Label” and will house Playboy’s sophisticated “White Label” lingerie collections, showcased on the mirrored tile walls and complimented with satin quilted upper walls, mixing glam with softness. Meet Famed Artist Peter Max at the Peter Max Gallery May 28 & 29 – Artist Peter Max will visit The Art of Peter Max Gallery at the Forum Shops at Caesars. Hint: Buy the “all day pass” if you go up to ride the Stratosphere rides. For about the price of riding any of the rides thee or four times, you can go again and again and again. And if you are like me, you’ll want to!

Sirens of TI – has replaced the old Pirate Show at Treasure Island. OK, ok … we are supposed to call it TI. The show is supposed to be better than the previous one. The “new” TI is supposed to be young and hip like The Palms or Hard Rock. I think the less-than-tepid applause after a recent “Sirens” show said it all.

The new Sirens are great eye candy for the guys (I enjoyed that part), but trying to do a short form production show using props meant for a previous show to an audience too far away to enjoy the subtleties fell a little flat. But hey … the price is right: Free performances nightly at 6:00, 8:00, and 10:00 p.m.

MGM-Mirage is reportedly considering doing away with the Mirage’s south seas theme. What look are they going to go after? Green Valley Ranch? Hey … their executives are making more than I am so they must know something I don’t.

Veterens Eat Free – McCormick & Schmick’s is offering all veterans free lunch or dinner (designated menu itens, served with coffee or tea) this Tuesday Nov. 11 in celebration of Veteren’s Day. New Mandalay Bay Tower – is already gracing the sky (under construction). Simply called The Hotel, this 43 story tower will feature softer colors and a south seas theme. (Hmmmm … the same theme Mirage is thinking of dumping). A restaurant and lounge on top will be open to the public and feature a stunning Strip view. The hotel will have it’s own check in area and two restaurants (including a 24/7 coffee shop) essentially creating a stand alone hotel.

Featured Story: Mama Mia!

What do you get when you put on a Broadway-style musical that features a hotel in Greece owned by an American woman, whose daughter’s father 21 years ago could have been one of three of the single mamma’s lovers, one each British, Australian and American? Did I mention that the play’s title is Italian, and the music is from the popular 1970s Swedish group, ABBA, (Dancing Queen, Thank You For The Music, etc.)?What you get from that mix is Mamma Mia, a fantastically popular show that currently plays to packed audiences at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

My daughter and I recently attended a performance. She’s a young TV comedy writer, and we sat down later to compare intergenerational opinions. Before the curtain rose, I feared that my stage musical preferences, except maybe for Cats and Les Miserables, had ended in the 1960s, when Rogers and Hammerstein broke up.

My daughter recently spent five years in NYC, living just a short hike from the theater district. In addition to being an expert on the current entertainment scene, she knows Broadway history. At age three, she had already memorized the entire scores of Bye, Bye Birdie, Oliver, Mame, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and other shows of the era.

My opinion is that Mamma Mia started slowly as the basic story was explained. Then after several quiet love songs, it exploded into highly-entertaining, toe-tapping musical numbers. Sorry, Oscar and Richard, but I believe the guys and gals who put this show together and performed it are every bit as original and entertaining as your creations.

My expert daughter patiently explained to her dad that the first 15 minutes were intentionally expository (All right, I said slow) so that the audience would understand the very complex relationships among the single mother, her daughter and the three maybe dads. We both agreed that once the lively dancing and singing numbers took over, we were totally entranced. Final father-daughter opinion: Go grABBA cab, plane, auto or bus, and wind your way to Mandalay Bay without delay to see Mamma Mia!

Mama Mia! Las Vegas: Show Times and Reservations

Now That’s a Waxy Build-Up – Madame Tussaud’s London-based Wax Museum just announced it’ll soon display a replica of teen singer/rocker Britney Spears. Unlike non-moving images of such famed female celebrities as Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Di and Margaret Thatcher, Britney’s wax figure will feature inflated breasts (chest breathing) that vibrate to an accompanying sound track.Although it may be some time before a wax copy of Britney’s animated anatomy arrives here, check out Madame Tussaud’s everyday exhibit at the Venetian on your next Vegas visit.

Bring your camera, because you’ll have a ball shooting cheek-to-cheek pix with the waxy likenesses of Sinatra, Elvis, Streisand, Newton, Whoopie and many others.
