Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Running just a little bit late this week. We published a couple of days late last week to include the ramifications of the election results, and that tossed us a little behind for this week. We’ll be back to our usual mid-week release soon.

With so much “serious” coverage of everything happening in Las Vegas, we sent Larry G. Jones – The Man of 1002 Voices to the grand opening of the residential preview center for Project CityCenter (across from the Aladdin, south of Bellagio) for a more humorous look at this huge new project. Click To View

Lots of stuff so I’m going to get out of the way quickly this week. We’ll have an expanded reader response section in the next couple of newsletters to address some common questions we frequently get.

Enjoy This Issue!

50th Anniversary Of Famous Liberace-Elvis Photo – Tribute Artists Re-Create Photo To Celebrate Entertainers – It was 50 years ago when a popular piano player and a young up-and-coming rock ‘n’ roller posed for a publicity photo in Las Vegas. Gambling Talk: Poker People – with Victor H. Royer. We called her Diamond Lil. Not because her name was Lil, or because she wore any diamonds, but because she always caught it on the river. She reminded us of those famed Belle’s of the Mississippi gambling ships of yesteryear.

Hi

myself, my wife and daughter have planned a trip to Las Vegas from England for the Christmas period (23rd to the 28th December), I would like to surprise them with a stretch limo when we arrive at the airport for the short trip to the Luxor, can you recommend a good Limo company?.

regards

Stewart, Gillian & Charlotte

Ted Responds:

We work with a company that only contracts with the top, more reputable and reasonably prices limo services and you can check out all the details on our limo rental area.

I agree that there is no better splurge, and it is more affordable than people think. No cab lines (or cab rip-offs with them talking you the long way), you can enjoy an optional 30 minute tour of The Strip (highly suggested), and there is nothing like pulling up in front of hour hotel in a limo.

In two years, we’ve had many words of praise and no complaints. Hope this helps and enjoy the trip!

What exactly is covered in the smoking ban? Can we still smoke in hotel rooms? The article mentioned malls. In Chicago we can smoke OUTSIDE but not inside. If, for example, I go to Fashion Show Mall, am I still allowed to smoke on the outside perimeters? I’m assuming we can still smoke in all casinos, correct? Quite frankly I’m fed up with all the no smoking rules. These idiot politicians should go after the bad guys instead. Was always happy to land in Vegas several times a year because we still had our freedom.By the way, I love your newsletter. As a person who loves Vegas and tries to keep up with the news, it’s a tremendous help. Have a great holiday.

Susan

Ted Responds:

The extent of the ban and how it will be enforced is yet to be seen.

A court had already decided that if measure 5 passed, it wouldn’t apply to hotel rooms. However, that won’t stop the proponents from trying to put that into court again.

Outdoor smoking is always permitted.

The politicians didn’t pass this. A vote of the people of Nevada did. Two many newcomers from restrictive states that legislate when and how you can even burp have moved here and want Nevada to be just like their home state. If their state was so great, they wouldn’t have moved here.

Side Note: I can’t count the transplants I have met who complain, complain, complain about living here. Everything from lack of bike paths and parks to not being able to get a “decent” pizza. But funny, you see them months later and they are still living here.

Back to the issue: I’m a non-smoker who and no one has ever put a gun to my head to go into a bar, club, or other establishment that allows smoking.

To those who are all for legislation banning smoking in businesses instead of letting the business and free market decide (I.E., a non-smoker choosing to patronize only businesses that are smoke-free), think about the move underfoot to restrict various unhealthy or fast food. Or booze. The shoe won’t fit so well when it is on the other foot.

By the way, smoking will continue to be allowed on the casino floors and the bars in casinos. If anything, this is going to cause people to do more smoking on the gaming floor area since they can’t smoke in restaurants, hallways, convention areas and the like. Hence, backfiring on those who approved of the ban in general hoping for a smoke-free gaming experience.

Will those of you recent transplants to Nevada who don’t like our “live and let live” attitude toward vices please move back home and quit trying to change Nevada? What is next, a last call for serving booze?

Hello there,Can anyone help us?

We are coming from England in February to the scooter rally at the Gold Coast hotel (Vespa’s, Lambretta’s ect) and have been trying to find out if we can hire a Vespa or Lambretta for our stay? Any ideas?

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Our best wishes go out to all those in Hawaii affected by the earthquake over the past week. About one million Hawaiian’s visit Las Vegas each year (out of some 40 million total visitors), so we know you are reading and wish you all the best in recovering putting life back together for those affected.

I need to stop jinxing the weather! It seems like every time I mention it, the next weekend results in lousy weather here. Last issue was no exception: For the first time in a long time, I mentioned the weather and Friday night a strong thunder and rain event rolled into town, dousing us for about 24 straight hours. Sorry! (BTW, weather for this weekend? Predicted to be around 80 with sunshine).

The names Steve Wynn and Le Reve are usually associated with the show Le Reve at Wynn Las Vegas. However, as many of you have heard, Mr. Wynn accidentally put a hole in the actual Picasso painting named Le Reve with his elbow as recounted in this story. Steve Wynn suffers from an eye disease that has been limiting his peripheral vision for years, most likely the cause of this boo-boo.

Costly mistake? Might be. He had just agreed to sell the painting for $139 million USD. The sale is off for now as the painting needs restoration. On the flip side, paintings with a story behind them are often more valuable, and this masterpiece now has even more allure. Time to re-write those art history books!

Nevada might have a smoking ban soon, and I’m surprised that this has received such little attention in the tourism media! As usual, we keep you informed on subjects others may overlook, with all the facts plus my commentary. Later in the newsletter, we’ll get you up to speed and give you a chance to make your voice heard, pro or con.

Review: The Capital Grille

by Zabrina Rodriguez-Rapozo

As we entered the Capital Grille for a cozy Saturday lunch, the hostess asked if we had a reservation which seemed odd for a place gleaming with empty tables. After gathering some menus and seating us at a beautiful table overlooking the Wynn resort, the question seemed more like a formality and not a requirement for a weekend lunch. I have always been impressed by steak houses’ stark white layers of table cloth and waiters using the popular “crummer” utensil to dust ubiquitous crumbs of bread on to the floor. Such was the case at the Capital Grille. . Click to Read Complete Review

I was amazed to read that the citizens of Nevada are voting for a ban on smoking. Whilst I respect their rights (it’s their State) to express such an opinion the reality is that the majority of people frequenting the State are visitors.

These visitors provide the finance to manage the State and make the major contribution to the wealth (and job retention). Without the free spending Japanese and the Europeans, Vegas revenue will drop alarmingly and as such Casinos will close and jobs will disappear.

Have the citizens thought this through?

Allen B. Sage

Ted Responds
:

Allen,

We have two competing anti-smoking measures on the ballot that will be voted on by the Nevada in about three weeks. For those wanting the specifics, I encourage you to read Smoking measures compete – Backers of both initiatives stress protecting children.

Personally, I don’t smoke. In fact, my grandfather died from a smoking-related illness. Having said that, smoking is a legal product at this time and I am very disturbed by those attempting to tell business owners what they can and can’t allow in their businesses. If non-smoking businesses are in demand, the owners will choose to prohibit smoking in their establishment on their own. In fact, and number of restaurants in the Las Vegas area have done so of their own accord.

Of the two anti-smoking measures on our ballot, #5 would pretty much ban smoking indoors anywhere, while #4 would allow it in bars, restaurants, casinos, and other similar places where smoking is already popular (continuing to leave it up to the business whether they want to allow patrons to smoke). If both measures pass, the one simply with the most votes becomes law.

Nevada is infamous as a state with more freedom and less regulation than other states. However, as people move in from other states, they bring their ideas and desire for their laws, which is very unfortunate. I may or may not choose to do things in my life, but it’s not my business to tell you what to do in yours. And while these anti-smoking campaigns are touted as “saving children from second-hand smoke,” perhaps parents simply need to refuse to take thier children to establishments which allow smoking (if the parent feels this a concern).

My opinion: If you move to Nevada, here’s a concept: How about you embrace Nevada and the freedoms we have here. If you are a “pleasure police” member who is out to force recycling, eliminate smoking, eliminate automobiles, dictate what others can eat and drink, and generally try to use the law to enforce your way of living on others, keep heading west… to California. Or go back where you came from.

Final Important Note: Because of the response this is likely to generate (both pro and con), please do not email me personally on this. I’m simply one person. Instead, click to this area of our message board where you can post your thoughts for the world to see. Las Vegas visitors don’t get to vote on this issue, but you can certainly post comments and let the world know how you feel leading up to election day!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! The Stardust has confirmed November 1, 2006 as their official closing date. They have been moving some employees to other company owned properties and are providing generous severance pay to those staying with the hotel until they end then retiring.

The plans for the building? Rumor is hot and heavy regarding a New Year’s Eve implosion, but nothing yet formally announced yet. As usual, you’ll know when we know!

Our friend Scott Whitney of the Living In Las Vegas Podcast got a nice mention in a recent news article: Hello out there! Podcasts can put your messages in the right ears. The article contains links to both of Scott’s great podcasts. Well worth a listen.

Readers WriteHello ,

I look forward to receiving your newspaper and finding out about all the changes in Las Vegas. My husband and I love going there for holidays the only complaint we have is that there are NO DIRECT FLIGHTS throughout the year from SCOTLAND. We only have direct flights for around 6 weeks in the summer which we did use last year. After that we either have to get a flight across to America then get an internal flight to Las Vegas or fly down to Manchester or London for a direct flight from there. By having to do this it adds a lot of journey time onto your holiday and especially on the return journey it is very tiring. Having to do this puts us off coming on holiday to Las Vegas. Even if there were to be one direct flight per week from Scotland I am sure it would be filled as we know a lot of people who do travel to Las Vegas and they also find it hassle with all the extra traveling.

I don’t know if you can suggest this to the holiday companies and see what type of feedback you receive. I know if the traveling was to be direct then we would visit oftener than we do.

I look forward to your reply and thank you.

Anne Rodger

Ted Responds – Anne,

Thanks for reading and visiting when you can. I know it is a LONG way to fly.

Airline flights are partially supply/demand and partially based on how many flights various governments allow between their countries. The best thing you can do is contact airlines that serve your area and specifically ask why you don’t have various direct flights to the U.S. that would be of interest.

Outside of a non-stop from London a few days a week (Virgin I believe), virtually everyone has to fly to the U.S. and then change planes. If you find out anything from airlines on your end that would be of interest to our readers, let us know. We have many readers in Europe.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Plenty of hot new information this issue. A couple of regular features are missing due to the July 4 holiday, but we never halt bringing you tons of great Las Vegas information. Read on!

Imperial Palace Update – A number of you wrote in saying “I have reservations later this year at the Imperial Palace and am worried what will happen if they close it sooner!

I contacted our friend Rhonda at I4Vegas (the company that handles the reservations if you use the booking box search on our site). She said this:

“I’m sure they will know a closing date so far in advance that existing reservations will not be affected, but should that be the case, you would be given comparable or upgraded accommodations at no additional cost. Just for your information, they do also own Harrah’s, Bally’s, Flamingo, Paris and Caesars all in that same area of the Strip.”

Note: This is from our travel partner and applies to those of you who have booked the Imperial Palace through our booking box or Imperial Palace information page here on AccessVegas.com. We can not speak for any other travel company.

If you didn’t make your reservations with us, you may wish to contact the customer service contact with wherever you made your reservations to find out their policy. We try to be as helpful as we can, but if (for example) you buy an Acura and you have a concern, it won’t do you any good to ask the people at the Lexus dealership. My point: We can’t speak to the policy of other companies.

For those who do make any type of reservation through our travel partners using the main booking boxes on AccessVegas.com, we are always more than happy to help. We choose the companies we associate with very carefully. Provided you book with one of our travel partners, always feel free to drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com with any concern and we get right on it!

The CityCenter of attention – MGM Mirage unveils model of its $7 billion mixed-use megaproject – As Bill McBeath sees it, the last thing Las Vegas needs is another hotel-casino. And on Monday, McBeath, president and chief operating officer of MGM Mirage’s Bellagio, showed media and gaming-industry watchers just how far beyond the traditional Strip-resort concept his company is going with its $7 billion Project CityCenter. Standing over a model of Project CityCenter inside an office on the construction site, McBeath pointed out the 66-acre development’s variety of components: In the back, up against Frank Sinatra Drive, a 60-story, 4,000-room hotel-casino with a curved, contemporary design will dominate the project’s skyline. An ebony condominium-hotel tower with 1,543 units will flank the hotel. Click to Read The Full Story …

Exclusive Ritual Treatments Add Cultural Flavor to Grand Spa OfferingsMGM Grand Spa recently introduced three signature ritual treatments. The new options join the popular Australian Aboriginal-inspired Dreaming Ritual to provide guests with an extensive menu of exclusive, indulgent global experiences that combine modern spa treatments with ancient cultural flavor. Rituals can be enjoyed either as a private journey or as a couple’s experience. All rituals include a private hot steam session and a Swiss shower.

  • The Dreaming Ritual — 120 Minutes – $295
This original signature ritual has received acclaim and loyalty among Grand Spa guests for years, making it their most popular signature service. The Dreaming Ritual is a tribal-inspired service that begins with a foot soak and proceeds into an exfoliation, body-mask and scalp treatment with indigenous healing elements from Australia. This profound experience is made complete with an Australian Aboriginal Massage. You will feel both deeply relaxed and deeply renewed.
  • Japanese Yuzu Ritual — 100 Minutes – $265
Yuzu, known as Japanese grapefruit, is rich in organic acids that aid in pain relief, improved circulation and skin smoothing. This refreshing ritual begins with a yuzu body scrub, followed by a choice of a sake or white tea body wrap and a Shiatsu scalp massage. Both sake and white tea are known for their anti-oxidant properties. Finally, unwind with a 50-minute Shiatsu-Combination Massage performed with yuzu body butter.
  • Amazon Rainforest Ritual — 100 Minutes – $265
This healing ritual begins with a plantain and cocoa powder body scrub. A healing and moisturizing body wrap, featuring the native South American herb “Una de Gato,” used for many years to stimulate the immune system and to reduce inflammation, follows. A rejuvenating foot massage is provided during the body wrap and the service ends with a 50-minute rhythmic massage using cocoa butter or passion flower oil. This service is sure to release any tension you might be carrying.
  • Turkish Hammam Ritual — 100 Minutes – $265
This treatment originates from the Turkish Hammam, a spa tradition dating back thousands of years, popular throughout the Mediterranean region. The ritual begins with a scrub made from Turkish coffee grinds and brown sugar blended with crushed walnut husks and fragrant cinnamon and cardamom. The body wrap that follows contains coffee extract, which will stimulate the tissues for cellulite reduction, along with milk proteins, aloe and seaweed to help nourish the skin. Enjoy a scalp massage during the body wrap before beginning a final vigorous, deep pressure massage, performed with orange or lavender body butter.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Readers Write

Hi Ted,

I truly enjoy the newsletter. I am curious about 1 thing though – does everyone try and get something for nothing in Vegas? I love Vegas make no mistake. I have played everything from penny slots up to and including black and purple checks on the craps table. Other than drinks, I have never ever taken a comp for anything. Nor do I intend to.

I come to play – not collect freebies. Last thing I want is some casino toadie looking over my shoulder offering me a room or a dinner. I gamble to gamble. I don’t want gifts – I want to be left alone. If I want a suite, I’ll pay for it.

All I want is a room where I get no phone calls, no one bothering me and no distractions. I’ll buy my own dinner thank you. If you are comping me dinner to the gourmet room, chances are it will be more crowded than anyplace I want to be. Let me alone and I’ll win or lose 5 figures, try and comp me and I will walk out the door. Just my nature,

Dicedoc from Chicago

Ted Responds – Thanks for reading! No question that many want to enjoy all the freebies they can, although it comes at a price to a higher limit player such as yourself. They want to track your play, get your home address, cell phone number, run your credit and practically name your first born in return for the higher level comps (free suites, fine dining, top show tickets all on the house).

That comes with a price. Your new “best friend” is the casino host at the place you frequent. It is nice to have them inviting you out to Vegas all the time with the comps, but in reality it is their job to get you locked in. Visiting only their place as often as possible while keeping you away from the competition. In addition, two risks come to mind:

  1. Comps are not actually free. They are based on your play. The more money you are likely to lose, and the more often you come and visit (creating more losing visits in the big picture), the more stuff they give you. But it is only a fraction of what they expect you to lose over the course of your many visits.á

  2. Familiarity breeds contempt. For years, I had a friend come to town and toss some pretty serious money around playing at one of the major Strip properties. He only stayed there no matter what. Over time, he noticed that his treatment wasn’t as good as it used to be and the comps weren’t as generous. What should he have done? Taken his action to other hotels, told them he was a longtime Hotel X customer but he wanted to see what they could do for him. They would have rolled out the red carpet! But alas my friend felt obligated by his “friendship” to the host of Hotel X and just kept visiting and being disappointed.

Note: Hotel hosts are not nor every will they be your friend. Their job is to get you to visit often enough to separate you (over the years) from as much of your money as possible. And they succeed because since you want to keep your comp level up (and keep the freebies and their “friendship” intact), most people tend to gamble more than they normally would have.

How much more? When all is said and done, they gamble away more to stay in the host’s good graces than it would have cost just to buy the suite, buy the fine dining, and buy excellent tickets to a show (fight, whatever) from a broker!

This is not a blanket condemnation of casino hosts or those of you who gamble lots of cash and expect good comps. Just remember that it is you against them, and plenty of competing properties want your business. Your host does his job, which is to try to keep you happy. But your job is to be a smart customer, not afraid to take your business across the street in search of a better deal (better treatment, more comps).

Many choose to go Dicedoc’s route: No pressure from the host, no pressure to gamble a certain number of hours per day, no pressure to stay at only a certain hotels. And for those of you that gamble at the higher levels, this might be a great time to review what’s going on. Are you happy with your host? Have you had some bad losses trying to put in the expected number of hours where the money would have better been spent paying for your suite and only gambling when you feel in a “lucky” mood?

I’m not here to take sides. Have nothing against casino hosts. Use them wisely if you use them. Just reminding all our readers who play higher-end to that you have many options.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! With Cirque du Soleil’s “Love” show about to launch , we thought is would be a good time to review the Fab Four, a long-running Beatles tribute show. In honor of The Scinta’s move to The Sahara, we dug up live TV performance from our archives. Plus summer cooking and grilling tips from Vegas’ hottest chefs. This and much, much more in this issue. Read on!

Cirque du Elvis – Cirque du Soleil has indeed confirmed that they are working on an Elvis based show. Don’t get in to much of a rush to buy tickets: The show isn’t scheduled to open until 2008, and then only as a touring Cirque show. Which should have it fine-tuned and probably hitting Las Vegas right about the time That MGM’s Project CityCenter opens.

With their Beatles-themed “Love” show on the verge of opening at The Mirage and this proposed Elvis-themed show, Cirque du Soleil is making a smart move to keep public interest. As spectacular as their shows are, themed Cirque shows could reach a saturation point. But combine their style with well-loved music icons, and you have surefire hits!

Awards Shows – This past week saw the Academy of Country Music Awards broadcast life from the MGM Grand and Thursday night’s taping of VH1 Rock Honors show paying tribute to Queen, Judas Priest, Kiss and Def Leppard (airs May 31 on VH1). Las Vegas hosts numerous nationally televised music award shows throughout the year and these are ticketed events that the general public can attend. As always, stay subscribed to this newsletter and we’ll always let you know about coming entertainment.

Current Giveaways!

Best Seats For Sports – You know we have Vegas tickets, but did you know we also have great, premium seats for a variety of sports events all over the United States? Check out our selection for yourself: NBA Playoffs (Dallas, Phoenix, Miami, Detroit), Baseball, NFL 2006, College Football, Auto Racing and Boxing.

Podcast should return next week. I’ve been training new hires and covering for staff vacations.

Enjoy This Issue!

Fab Four Beatles Tribute

Reviewed May, 2006
by Phil Arnold

fab four beatles show las vegas

So you are going to see a show by a band impersonating the Beatles. What do you suppose the show is going to be like? I figured it would be some guys in wigs who would play a few songs and well, that would be it.

The Fab Four is better than that. Let’s get too it. The best thing about the Fab Four, a Beatles tribute band is their sound. They sound like the Beatles, and they do a great job of playing the Beatles music. Listening to this show was like watching and listening to a musical autobiography. Click to Read Complete Review

Spark Up the Grill — Summertime Cooking Tips From Las Vegas! The weather heats up, mouth-watering scents waft through the air and you can almost taste the steaks cooking in the neighbor’s yard. Time to spark up the grill! But don’t just toss a chunk of beef on the barbecue; take some advice from the expert chefs of MGM MIRAGE. They’ll have you grilling like a pro and ready to host a backyard barbecue in no time. Here’s just a sampling:

Chef Michael Mina – Michael Mina Bellagio, Nobhill and Seablue at MGM Grand

Tips on grilling fish:

Do:

  • Always use a grill basket like the kind sold in specialty kitchen equipment shops. The basket is Teflon coated, which will ensure your fish doesn’t stick, and clamps together at the handle to hold the fish in place and allow easy flipping. Using a fish basket is the most important thing you can do to grill fish successfully.
  • Work over a hot grill – white coals are ideal.
  • Use fish with skin on. There’s nothing better than crispy-skinned fish. The skin of most fish is perfectly edible and becomes crisp and delicious when grilled over a very hot grill. The skin also protects the meat from overcooking. It’s fine to grill and eat the skin of all snappers, bass, salmon, halibut, and cod. Take the skin off of grouper, monkfish, skate and a few others. If in doubt, ask your fish monger.
  • Cook the fish about 7 minutes per inch of thickness. Flip the fish halfway through the cooking time.
  • Let the fish rest after it comes off the grill. The fish should rest three minutes for each inch of thickness. Resting allows the inside to continue cooking while the temperature evens out. Resting also allows the fish to reabsorb some of its juices, making it seem moister.
  • Throw wood chips or herbs directly on the fire to flavor the smoke. You can buy smoking chips at any grocery store, or try throwing bunches of rosemary, thyme, basil, sage or any other herb right on the coals to subtly perfume the fish with their flavor. In the Mediterranean it is traditional to throw dried fennel fronds and branches right on the fire while the fish cooks. These can be gathered from almost any backyard in California, or purchased at some specialty food purveyors.

Don’t:

  • Try to put the fish directly on the grill grate, unless you have a lot of experience grilling fish — it’s likely to stick and break apart when you try to flip or remove it.
  • Let the grill flare up or let open flames come in contact with the fish, this will cause a burnt oil taste and leave smudge marks all over your catch.
  • Use old fish. Always buy the freshest fish you can afford. Nothing will make more of a difference in the outcome of your barbecue than using fresh fish. Some tips for identifying fresh fish: the smell, fresh fish will smell clean and like the ocean, not fishy; on most species the eyes will be clear if the fish is fresh; press the sides of the fish — it will feel firm not mushy if it is fresh; the gills should be bright red, nut faded; slime, slime is a good thing, fish have a natural coating of slime when they are very fresh that disappears rapidly as they age.
  • Use an excessive amount of oil on the fish, this will cause the grill to flare up and smudge your fish.
Chef Brian Massie – FIX and STACK at Bellagio

Tips on grilling meat:

  • Salt & peppering two days before will help break down sinew and add depth to thicker cuts of meat. Season and leave uncovered in fridge and air dry.
  • Partial Brine – dipping cuts of meat in a brine solution is a great way to season meats and impart seasoning to the center of the meat.
  • Full Brine — another form of marinating. This style of marinating will allow the meat to retain its juices and not become dried out, also helps season the center of the steak or chop with add exterior flavor. Basic recipe: 1 gallon water, 1 cup salt, ¢ cup sugar, 1 head of garlic, lime juice and peel of 1 lime, pepper corns, cinnamon stick.
  • All meat should be at room temperature before grilling. This will help ensure even cooking throughout and will eliminate over-charring and raw centers.
  • Bone-In vs. Bone-Out – protein will always look and taste better with the bone in rather than without. The end product will have a much richer and natural flavor. The bone also helps protect the meat from overcooking and charring. Any steak that has an attached bone will ultimately become a more tender product.

Whole Lotta Movin’ Goin’ On – The Elvis statue, first installed at the Las Vegas Hilton on September 8, 1978, will soon be returning to a place of glory at the famed property. It was first installed at the entrance to the showroom, then moved to the front lobby. Last year, it was removed from the lobby during the first phrase of construction and renovation took place. Now, the statue will be dedicated in a new location in the near (very near) future.

Gambling Talk: Video Slots – Elvira, Mistress of the Dark – with Victor H. Royer. Based on the popular late-night television horror-show actress of the same name, this new video slot machine from IGT features an entire variety of “creepy” creatures and pays. This is a very distinctive slot machine and you will not be able to miss it when you see it. It is very tall, and has a statue of Elvira sitting seductively at the top of the machine. Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Readers WriteHey Ted, Always love the news letter. I have seen you answer questions in some issues. Was wondering if you could answer one for me.

I am planning on being in LV on Xmas and the week after, ….are the majority of shows dark for the holidays, or are there still many to choose from??

Thanks,

Robert from Carrollton, Texas

Ted Responds – The 10 days leading up to Christmas are the slowest of the year (usually with some pretty low room rates) and the crowds and lines are way down. The downside is that most of the shows do take that time off. Both to give their performers a break and because of the lower visitor numbers. If I recall correctly, the Bellagio sometimes even uses this time to shut down the fountains for maintenance.

However, Christmas is actually starting to be a pretty busy time as more and more families are using Las Vegas as their hub to meet up and celebrate the holiday. Following Christmas, everything gets back into high gear as New Year’s Eve is only a week later.

Whether gunning for a cheap pre-Christmas room, or just to lock in a room for New Year’s Eve, I generally suggest everyone get serious about booking their rooms now. The “secret” of pre-Christmas low rates starts to get out, drives up prices as we get later in the year. New Year’s rates start high and only go up as the year goes along.

Dear Ted, I’ve just got back from a 7 night vacation in Las Vegas today (Fri) and miss it already. I only lost $10 overall so I’m pleased. I stayed at the Stardust and was very sad to find this magnificent piece of LV history is to die at the end of 2006 – Is there some way to save it and incorporate the main West Tower into the new complex and save the beautiful name?.

Anyway my fave place was off strip – The Rio. It’s floor show in the afternoon is second to none with photo opportunities too – extremely professional and fun too. Long live The Rio. Also what few people in my group realized that some of the best eating establishments are off strip, esp. the Gold Coast Buffet – What a choice – lunchtime buffet only $7.45 – I came out rather heavier than I went in. – Any surveys you run please include me so I can rate the best of Beautiful Las Vegas. Ted keep up the good work.

Regards – Owen (South Shields, England)

Ted Responds – Owen, glad you had such a great time! I’m thrilled and flattered by our friends around the world who love Las Vegas, travel so far to see us, and enjoy our information. Because of the scope of the size of the Stardust replacement, the building will come down. But Radio.AccessVegas.com listeners know that I am no fan of the replacement name “Echelon Place”. At the very least, it would be nice if part of the new complex kept some of the Stardust name. Thanks for writing!

Hello From Las Vegas …and long time no see! We put the newsletter on hiatus while we’ve been doing some extensive expanding and improving of AccessVegas.com. More insider information, more giveaways, more stuff to do and see. We’ll detail much of it in this newsletter issue!

Insider Vibe – As you can see, we’ve changed the newsletter name as we prepare to split our content into two newsletters. This newsletter will continue to cover visitor information with your usual insider aspect. We’ll be spinning off our Vegas Update (see info this issue) focusing on the Las Vegas news stories that interest the world.

On a personal note, a big thanks to all the encouraging notes throughout the year as I battle back from some severe health issues. Never thought at the “ripe old age” of 39 I’d be dealing with a major health problem (long-term toxic household mold exposure and lasting immune system complications … mold can kill). I have a ways to go, but I’m improving every week, happy to be “back in the saddle” and as excited as ever about my city … Las Vegas!

Show Review – Neil Sedaka: Playing at The Orleans August 16-21, 2005. Click for Neil Sedaka Ticket Info

Reviewed June 15, 2005
Nancy Hruska

Neil Sedaka“I’m the king of Tra La La’s and Doo Wop’s,” Sedaka humbly confessed.

It looks as though even after 4 decades of recording, Neil Sedaka is still able to make a rose-tossing full house at The Orleans cry and sing along to “Breaking up is Hard to do.” The truth is, no matter which age or demographic one belongs to; the heavy weight Pop pioneer will belt out some velvet anthem of which everyone knows the words.

His name sounds familiar to at least everyone with a record player, but who is Neil Sedaka? Oh just another face in the music industry; one of which had his songs recorded by the lesser known Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Not to mention a managing hand launching the careers of Neil Diamond, Carole King, and Paul Simon. But no one should assume his seasoned career would give him any less energy on stage now than 40 years ago. The man can soft shoe and sing smooth hits as though it’s his first day in showbiz. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Memorial Day was nuts with perfect 24/7 weather and 15% humidity. Las Vegas is the perfect spot for your summer getaway and we hope to see you soon!

Ultra-Evening – Here’s a trifecta that’s hard to beat: We checked out La Femme, plus both the “ultralounges” Tabu (pictured right) at MGM Grand and Ghostbar at The Palms all in one beautiful Las Vegas evening last week.

La Femme just celebrated their third anniversary in Las Vegas. They have expanded the cast and added a slight Vegas flair. Well worth seeing and we’ll have a full review next week. While you wait, check out the new Le Femme photos in our shows photos area and click to read more about the show.

Golf – You can still get your free subscription to Golf Magazine courtesy of us here at AccessVegas.com. Click for your complimentary GOLF Magazine subscription!

The Casino vs. American Casino – Two new reality shows based on owners of Las Vegas casinos debut almost back-to-back here in June. The Casino (from the people who brought you Survivor and The Apprentice) profiles new Golden Nugget owners Timothy Poster and Thomas Brietling in their quest to bring the downtown hotel back to it’s old-shcool glory days.

American Casino is produced by the same people who do American Chopper (go Mikey) and profiles Station Casino owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta in their quest to make Green Valley Ranch one of the hottest, hippest places in town.

American Casino debuts Friday June 4 on Discovery Channel and The Casino debuts Monday June 14 on Fox. Check local listings for times.

Hoover Dam Deluxe VIP Tour
Comedy Bus Tour

By Ariane
Bio and Contact Info

Up for an afternoon of comedy, education, history, sightseeing, nature, art, homemade food, fudge and unlimited fun? Then sign up for the Hoover Dam Deluxe VIP Comedy Tour! This 6 hour tour provides the adventure of the Wild West, and much more!

You are treated like a Vegas star from the very beginning! Your day begins as the tour bus conveniently picks up from most major Casinos. Leaving Las Vegas, you ride in plush comfort through the desert on the way to Hoover Dam. During this time, you will be entertained by a nationally known comedian that is also your tour guide! You never know who it may be! Fun games are played on the bus and secret surprise bags are handed out.

Once at Hoover Dam, exit the bus and begin your walking adventure. The tour guide takes you from the Arizona side of the Dam to the Nevada side, and narrates the “History in Dam detail”. Stops along the way include a walk across the very top of the dam, where you will look 726 feet over the edge, and stand directly across a 53 foot wide tunnel!

The sheer size of it all is breathtaking. On the Nevada side, there are many beautiful Art Deco sculptures, a sundial, and a map of the solar system to the precise moment when the Dam was dedicated. There is also a visitors center where to buy souvenirs or snacks. Picnic tables are nestled among towering canyon rock walls, for tourists to rest and enjoy the best of what man and nature have created.

Next up is the nature tour … on the scenic overlook of Lake Mead right outside Hoover Dam and Boulder Canyon. View Antelope squirrels burrowing on the mountain sides, see the largest man made lake in the world, and trails that lead to old mines where men searched for treasures of the earth. You also get an education about an experience with the desert stinkweed plant!

Lunch is at Matteo’s, located in the Historic Boulder Hotel. The food is homemade, and the service is great. The pasta is a recommended favorite! After eating visit the upstairs Museum and learn more about the history of Hoover Dam, see a movie, and a photo exhibit of the men who made the Dam a reality. Last stop is down the street to an Old Fashioned Fudge shop for some sinful samples!

On the ride back to Sin City, you will view stunning celebrity mountain homes, and take a drive through the neighborhood consisting of the actual “dingbat homes” built for the workers of Hoover Dam. The tour guide continues with more Las Vegas history, insider secrets, and a few other surprises. The rest you will just have to see for yourself!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! We’ve been playing hooky on getting the newsletter out. I’d like to tell you we’ve been around the pool relaxing, but actually we are hard at work on the next version of AccessVegas.Com.

Even more information, new look, better navigation, tons of contests and giveaways, and an expanded improved members section (still and always free). Should debut in January! If you have any suggestions you would like incorporated, please drop us a line: allvegastv@aol.com

Thanksgiving Weekend – is Nov. 27 – 30. Almost all of the hotel restaurants from the buffets to the fine dining houses host a Thanksgiving menu, and the town is full of people taking advantage of a four day weekend. Many get their family and friends all together to meet in Las Vegas! Check room rates now.

Coming Concerts and Headliners – Lots and lots of great entertainment on the way. Book now online to lock up the best available tickets or call 800-696-5721 to book all Las Vegas hotels, shows, tours, golf, and dining:

Free Las Vegas Golf Lessons – and you can take them from anywhere in the world! We’ve teamed up with Revere Anthem Golf Club Director of Instruction Chris Eastman (in conjunction with ChefLive.com) and put together a series of eight streaming video golf tips.

Chris starts with fundamentals like aim and grip, and works through some of the finer points of the game. We’ll be posting a new lesson every week and reminding you here in the newsletter.

If you want to improve your game or just get a taste of Las Vegas golf, see the videos and learn more about Chris and The Revere at our Streaming Video Free Golf Lessons page. He is also available and highly recommended for private instruction.

X-Scream – thrill ride has opened on top of the Stratosphere Tower. X-Scream tilts you 30 feet over the edge as it plunges you toward the ground almost 1000 feet below! Hint: Buy the “all day pass” if you go up to ride the Stratosphere rides. For about the price of riding any of the rides thee or four times, you can go again and again and again. And if you are like me, you’ll want to!

Sirens of TI – has replaced the old Pirate Show at Treasure Island. OK, ok … we are supposed to call it TI. The show is supposed to be better than the previous one. The “new” TI is supposed to be young and hip like The Palms or Hard Rock. I think the less-than-tepid applause after a recent “Sirens” show said it all.

The new Sirens are great eye candy for the guys (I enjoyed that part), but trying to do a short form production show using props meant for a previous show to an audience too far away to enjoy the subtleties fell a little flat. But hey … the price is right: Free performances nightly at 6:00, 8:00, and 10:00 p.m.

MGM-Mirage is reportedly considering doing away with the Mirage’s south seas theme. What look are they going to go after? Green Valley Ranch? Hey … their executives are making more than I am so they must know something I don’t.

New Year’s Eve Concerts – The list is getting longer and longer, and we are posting them as we get the news. Check out our December 2003 Entertainment Calendar. What … you don’t know how hot New Year’s Eve is here in Las Vegas? We have the insider tips, and plenty of free photos and streaming video from past years on our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve site!

Veterens Eat Free McCormick & Schmick’s is offering all veterans free lunch or dinner (designated menu itens, served with coffee or tea) this Tuesday Nov. 11 in celebration of Veteren’s Day. Veterens ID or discharge papers required. You can reserve ahead at 702-836-9000. McCormick & Schmick’s is a fine dining restaurant. Watch Executive Chef John Botkin prepare one of their famous dishes and take a peek via streaming video: Dial-Up or Broadband

Top Restaurants – Michael Politz, publisher of Food and Beverage Magazine recently appeared on Extra TV, highlighting some of the great restaurants of Las Vegas. Click to watch.

New Mandalay Bay Tower – is already gracing the sky (under construction). Simply called The Hotel, this 43 story tower will feature softer colors and a south seas theme. (Hmmmm … the same theme Mirage is thinking of dumping). A restaurant and lounge on top will be open to the public and feature a stunning Strip view. The hotel will have it’s own check in area and two restaurants (including a 24/7 coffee shop) essentially creating a stand alone hotel.

Video Spotlight – We are always adding new streaming video to our All Vegas TV site, over 100 Las Vegas videos to date! This week, we feature video of the Ambassador Strip Travelodge. Who? What? A Motel 6???

No … no, no, no! Set against the MGM and Tropicana hotels, this inn is a couple minute walk from The Strip, free airport and convention shuttle, complimentary continental breakfast, and even wireless broadband around the pool. Check out a fun, humorous look this property for yourself: Dial-Up or Broadband

á See the Grand Canyon in a Jet Helicopter! For years Maverick Helicopters has been providing a true VIP Helicopter experience of the Grand Canyon. We do things a little different than any other helicopter Company. We give you an adventure of a lifetime and not just another tour of the Grand Canyon. Las Vegas Strip tours plus Helicopter Weddings also available!
