Toxic Audio Explained – It’s Voice, And All Voice

by DW Grant

“Toxic Audio,” what the heck is that?

It’s one of best small shows in Vegas; and at half the price its just as much fun as The Blue Man Group, moves with just as much energy as Gans or Newton, and delivers just as many laughs as a night out with the Second City comedy troupe.

So, what is it? It’s Voice, and all voice. Not a sound comes from the stage that isn’t produced by someone’s voice. Drums, guitars, sax, bass, and some mysterious musical modulations come out of the mouths and noses of these performers with such amazing clarity you can then understand why the promotional icon is a guy with a microphone for a head.

It’s five singers with no back up band or recorded tracks pumping out “Autumn Leaves” in English, French, German, Korean, Scat, and Pig Latin. Its Paul Sperrazza, a “human beat box,” tearing up the audience like a mix of Jim Carey, Jerry Lewis, and that guy who almost won American Idol last year. It’s also Rene Ruiz, the founder of the group, whose credits include “Forever Plaid,” delivering a unforgettable show to a cheering audience.

La Cage Las Vegas – Believe It When You See It!

by Nicole “Niko” Acevedo

Believe it when you see it! There’s no need to go back in time to experience the legendary Diana Ross and sophisticated Judy Garland, and you don’t have to squint your eyes to witness the dance moves of Michael Jackson and Britney Spears in large overcrowded stadiums. Why not intimately see them all on the same evening at the snazzy zebra-striped Mardi Gras Pavilion of Vegas’ one and only Riviera Hotel & Casino?

Presented by stunning female impersonators of famous celebrity superstars such as Madonna, Celine Dion, Cher, Dolly Parton, Britney Spears, Judy Garland, and the mega-diva Diana Ross, you will be so enthralled by their performances that you will forget that they are in fact merely impersonating! When “Celine Dion” performed “My Heart Will Go On”, her passionate facial expressions and mannerisms were flawlessly identical and encompassed a witty charm. For a moment I was so excited to catch one of her final Las Vegas performances at Caesar’s Palace until of course I realized Bette Midler had already replaced the show.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Hi Ted,I”m very happy to be updated with your news letter. I’m a French Canadian woman from the city of Repentigny, Quebec Province, just next city from Charlemagne, where Celine Dion was born. I’m wondering about the webcam from Imperial Palace Hotel. I used to watch them very often to see people walking the sidewalk and also when I’m at Vegas, I used to call my family and they can watch me live. I can’t see them anymore, what appended. Do you think that Imperial Palace will disappear soon? Is there any other webcam to see, in the area? It gives me an idea how to pack my suitcase when I plan to go to Vegas.Sorry about my writing. You have a very easy way to make me understand you. I’m planning to be in your area at the end of September so I will be very attentive to your next news letters.

Keep going, you do a great job Ted, also your assistant editor Amy Rayner-Cooley and your news researcher Mark Jacobs.

Monique Lavigne

Ted Responds:

Thanks for the great note! We have many Canadian (and French Canadian) readers and appreciate your love and visits to our city. The IP isn’t going anywhere soon. However, Harrah’s now owns it and they do things differently. We are going to revamp our webcam page and try to find the best ones that work all the time so you can say hello to people back home.

No promises (since we don’t control the cameras… we just link to them), but we are working on it. In the meantime, try the Traffic Department at http://www.nvfast.org/trafficcameras.html which has a few cameras on the Las Vegas Strip.

Thanks for telling everyone you know about our newsletter. We aren’t owned by a big TV station. We are just a handful of long-time Las Vegas locals who are working hard to keep everyone informed and we need readers to spread the word!

Dear Ted,I have been receiving your newsletter for about 6 months and find it to be the most informative of any in Las Vegas. So pleased with it that all others have been canceled. Planning a trip in early July and was wondering if LV does any fireworks over the 4th holiday.Kathy
Chicago, IL

Ted Responds:

Historically, Stratosphere (and sometimes Hilton) does a show. Many other displays happen around the “normal” parts of Las Vegas (where everybody lives).

We usually don’t get the info until 10-14 days in advance of July 4. But if history is any indication, you’ll be able to enjoy fireworks on the Las Vegas Strip on July 4.

Thanks for the great feedback. We work very hard at what we do, so nice words are appreciated.

I look forward to reading your newsletter but last week you had a big photo of a desecrated corpse from that bodies display thing. That is a sick and twisted exhibit. Corpses belong in the ground not as entertainment. I lost a lot of respect for you Ted. That was a bad call. Truly offensive. Ron

Editors Note: This is in reference to the Bodies – The Exhibition review that ran in our April 2, 2008 Insider Vibe Issue

Ted Responds:

I do agree that not everyone wants to see a medical display. I myself could never be a doctor because that kind of stuff makes me a little squeamish.

However, I do want to emphasize that this is an educational/medical display. Area schools hold trips to view the exhibit and parts of the exhibit show the difference between healthy organs and of those who abuse themselves in various ways.

I do appreciate the input, and we’ll stick to photos of Las Vegas Showgirls and Chippendales performers in the future. We’ve never had a complaint about that!

Thanks for the input,

Reader Submitted Photo – Austin and Jo from Brighton in the UK submitted these two great photos. They write:

Hi there!

We are ‘Austin and Jo Constant’ from Brighton in the UK, we were in Vegas last October …… when there was some interesting weather…one day it snowed…and whilst visiting the Canyon we saw a thunderstorm inside the canyon whilst we were stood in full sunshine!!!

Cant wait to come back….we will be back in June to stay at Wynns …. thought we send u a couple of pics as we love your newsletter for all the info on what’s happening in Vegas….keep up the good work, thank you!!

Anyway, we took this amazing photo from our room in the Mirage of Harrah’s across The Strip when this rainbow appeared to disappear into the casino tower…. of course we then rushed over looking for the pot of gold …. but…….

…..and here’s an ‘arty’ one of Caesars Palace taken on a slow shutter speed at night as we drove past. I love this one as you can really feel the movement and I think it captures crazy night time feel of Vegas!

Thanks for your time, all the best from your British readers !!

Hi Ted!I will be in Las Vegas over the 4th of July holiday, and was wondering what really goes on for the 4th? I have heard different things from different people, such as, the strip gets closed off to traffic and each hotel does a fireworks display in sequence, the Stratosphere has the best display, and Red White and Boom is definitely worth checking out.

Can you let me know if any of this is true, and what you suggest to check out on the 4th of July in Vegas?

Lynsie Wiese

Ted Responds:

As always, we talk about and list events as soon as we are given the information. To date we have received no July 4 information.

Stratosphere Tower has traditionally had the only display on The Strip, but with the pending sale of the property I wouldn’t bank on that yet. The biggest displays are spread around town where the rest of us live and we will publish info on those when we get it.

New Years Eve is when the entire Strip is closed to traffic and a unified fireworks display is set off from the tops of various properties. We have streaming video from previous New Years Eve available:

I’d find the person who told you that The Strip closes down for fireworks on July 4 and politely suggest they subscribe to this newsletter… so they will know what they are talking about next time!

With the volume of free information we constantly pump out, we feel our readers are among the most informed about Las Vegas on the planet. Share the wealth and tell your friends to subscribe!

Headlights and Tailpipes

Headlights and Tailpipes las vegasReviewed May, 2005
by Phil Arnold

When I first heard about this show, I was thinking this is some serious double entendre. So if I read my double meanings with a sexual implication, this show should be about beautiful girls and fancy cars. In fact, it should be by its implication a topless show with a minimal amount of clothes.

I am not a huge antique car fan. So I was thinking this is going to be just another topless show. Well, it’s not just another topless show. It is certainly not your run of the mill topless show. There are in fact cars I liked in this show. There was a pre-1960 Ford Thunderbird featured during a Beach Boys tune, Fun, Fun, Fun Till Her Daddy Takes Her T-bird Away or whatever that tune is entitled. There is a song about a Pink Cadillac and several other Rock N Roll standards about cars and women. My favorite car was probably a mid-60s Pontiac GTO. There were also Corvettes and Chevy Bel Aires. The models are technically more ingenious and more flexible in their design of new shapes, enabling the latest trends to be rapidly reflected. The series includes a classic collection with five models that could be described as fairly casual, and five simple classic watches in cheerful brash colors. Click to Read The Full Story …

Blue Man Group at Venetian Las Vegas

Reviewed May 2006
by Nancy Hruska

blue man group venetian las vegas hotels showsWhy are the people in the front row wearing plastic covering over their clothes? Why is there an oversized DNA strand on stage? What are those brass figures in each corner of the showroom? These peculiar embellishments aren’t often found in top of the line Vegas entertainment so curiosity is peaked by even the most sedated audience members.

Far before the world renowned Blue Man Group show’s curtain slides, those waiting for God only knows what, share the same questioning cocked head…what in the world?…what on earth are they going to do with that? And this disorientation, this vacation from the norm, is exactly what the show celebrates: curiosity, experimentation, and the human condition. These three endearing blue men explore the world through witty comical and even thoughtful outbursts that can’t help but capture the hearts of everyone. Click to Read Complete Review

Newsletter Going On Hiatus – We are going to take a few weeks off to soak up the sun and watch the off-duty cocktail waitresses sun by our complex pool.

OK, actually we (the staff) will be hard at work making some major upgrades to AccessVegas.com and this newsletter. And we can’t do both at once. So … Coming Soon:

  • We’re splitting this newsletter. It’s just too out-of-control with so much happening in Las Vegas! This version will get back to a focus on tourism: What to do, go, and see. The newsletter we are spinning off will deal with news of gaming, the condo boom, real estate, insider opinion and commentary, and other dirt on what makes Las Vegas tick. You’ll have to sign up for it separately. We’ll let you know how.
  • Expanded, upgraded nightlife and VIP areas of AccessVegas.com where you can buy nightclub passes, get set up for tables and booths (bottle service) with our VIP hosts, or just learn everything you need to know about our city’s famous nightclubs and nightlife.
  • Ted Newkirk will be returning to the helm. As many of you know, toxic residential mold exposure and a “perfect storm” of other environmental issues and mis-diagnosis kept our publisher gravely ill for months. He’s on a long, slow comeback trail and looking forward to getting back in the saddle here on a limited basis.

We here at the newsletter will see you in July, but AccessVegas.com will be going strong so don’t be a stranger! Take the time to surf some of the hundreds of streaming Las Vegas videos or thousands of Las Vegas photos we have online for you.

Scroll down for the Wynn Las Vegas photos and the rest of this issue!

Wynn Las Vegas Photos: Part Two – We now have over 50 new photos of Wynn Las Vegas online taken by Photographer Tom. These in addition to the photos sent in by reader Rick Bobst give us (what we believe is) more photos of Wynn Las Vegas than you’ll find on any other travel website! Click to Wynn Las Vegas photos and don’t forget: Below each photo is a Send As A Postcard link. Send as many as you want to show your friends!

Shop Our Logo Store – Just for being a great guy and sending us some of the first Wynn Las Vegas photos that were made available to the public anywhere, we’re giving reader Rick Bobst his choice of any item in our AccessVegas.com Logo Shop. If you are getting ready for your next trip, or just want something that tells everyone “I Know Las Vegas,” stop by our AccessVegas.com Logo Shop and grab a couple of treats for yourself or that special someone.

Free CD With Ticket Purchase – Our friend Larry G. Jones – Man Of 1002 Voices is offering a free CD with purchase of two tickets online. Click over to Larry G. Jones – Man Of 1002 Voices for details.

July 4’th Fireworks On The StripImportant notice … if you crane your neck on The Strip on July 4’th, you’ll be a day late and a dollar short. OK, hopefully you’ll be a few thousand dollars ahead for the visit but you won’t see any fireworks. The Stratosphere Tower is shooting them off … on July 3’rd.

So we suggest heading up to check out Wynn Las Vegas and then continuing to make your way north around dusk. Because The Strip has a bend in it, you won’t be able to see them south of Treasure Island. Fireworks usually go off around 9 PM when it’s completely dark but that can vary (wind at the top of the Tower delay). Grab a beverage and get yourself out on The Strip, soak up Vegas, and wait for the bangs!

Cook E. Jarr and The Twin Keys – One of our favorite things to do is to hit Harrah’s on a Tuesday or Wednesday because we get to see two of the best lounge/party acts in town, playing steps from each other at Harrah’s!

Twin Keys are Kimberley & Tamara Pinegar. These identical twins take the stage just inside from the Carnival Court Tuesdays – Saturdays from 9 PM to 2 AM. They have you laughing, singing along and dancing in no time. Keeping tradition of the dueling pianos genre, the show is an all-request, sing-along that incorporates audience participation and comedy. Twin Keys plays requests that range from the Andrews Sisters to Aerosmith and AC/DC! Check out their streaming video (not from Harrahs but you get the idea).

Cook E. Jarr is the ultimate showman. He’s the entertainers’ entertainer and he’s at Harrah’s on the fabulous Las Vegas Strip. Cook E. Jarr has been voted Number One lounge performer more times than any other performer in the history of Las Vegas. He is well known for attracting big-name celebrities to his phenomenal performances. Cook E. Jarr, King of America’s Lounges is performing at upstairs at Harrah’s Carnival Court on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 11:00 PM. For more information and to hear streaming sound clips of his live show, visit our Cook E. Jarr – Las Vegas Legend page.

Chef Live … From Las Vegas – Over time, we’ve talked about this exciting new concept in streaming video and our friends at Chef Live are on a roll! Their Board of Directors is a literal who’s who of famous Las Vegas Chefs, they have already launched their first show locally, and things are going national and international soon. We’ve been involved with the development of Chef Live for almost five years and are thrilled to see it come together!

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Running a little late this time. I was out of town for a week at my sister’s wedding, and I thought it would be a good idea to get caught up on the stack of newspapers and press releases so I could pass everything along.

The long 4’th of July weekend is just about here, and there is still time to reserve your room and head to Las Vegas. Check at http://www.accessvegas.com and grab rooms while they are still available. This year both the Stratosphere Tower and The Venetian are featuring fireworks (approx. 9 PM for both).

Our deepest sympathy to the fans, friends, and family of Who bassist John Entwistle who passed away Friday June 28 here in Las Vegas, just one day before the start of their highly anticipated concert tour.

$1.83 BILLION – is the new price tag for Steve Wynn’s Le Reve (former Desert Inn site). Other reports place the cost closer to $2.5 billion. The billion dollar construction credit line is believed to be the biggest construction loan ever issued in the United States. How upscale is this property going to be? They are looking at having Ferrari and Maserati dealerships right on site. Completion is expected in 2005. We’ll tell you more as they actually get moving along. This is looking to be huge.

STRIKE LOOMING – Looks like we are going to have a hotel strike at a few selected properties that have not come to terms with the union. Word is that replacement workers are ready to go to minimize disruption. The strike is set for a few hours following our publication here, but we’ll keep a hotel list and details updated at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotel-strike.htm

CIRQUE DU TOO MANY? – Two more Cirque du Soleil shows are coming to the Las Vegas Strip. New York, New York will open one in 2003 and MGM in 2004. Details are scarce except that the New York, New York show will be sensual and erotic. Cirque du Soleil has been kicking around the idea of an adult (topless) show for some time. This just might be it. Add to that Celine Dion’s show (which is supposed to be Cirque style) and another Cirque style show at Le Reve and we’ll see if overkill is possible, even in Las Vegas.

$20 DISCOUNT – We have a special arrangement with Maverick Helicopters to offer $20 off on their spectacular Grand Canyon helicopter flights online. Maverick flies farther and deeper into the Canyon with some of the newest equipment and the best safety record. They are the company the concierges at many of the top Las Vegas resorts call when their guests request a Grand Canyon tour. By booking online through us, we can offer you $20 off these stunning tours. Tour info, photos, and booking details available at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/las-vegas-grand-canyon-tours.htm

NICK’S – Our restaurant guide Chef John Guinivere just reviewed Nick’s On The Strip, a pleasant alternative to a hotel coffee shop for diverse 24 hour dining and a great night view. You can find it and other reviews at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-restaurants.htm

FREE BINGO, CHEAP BOWLING – The Westward Ho is having free bingo at 4 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays. Everyone is welcome for the eight games played at each session. $50 prize each game. The Gold Coast (next to Rio and Palms) has $1 bowling and $1 drinks Midnight to 4 AM, Mondays through Fridays.

TAXI SCAM – The cab drivers are at it again. If you are on your way down The Strip, they’ll tell you that the Bellagio Fountain show is about to start and will pull into the right lane of traffic sitting there with about 20 other cabs until the show starts while the meter is running (racking up both a higher fare and hoping you tip them extra for the “favor”).

Granted, the fountain show runs every 15 minutes after dark so it is never more than a 10 minute wait, but the view from a cab is lousy. You are behind trees and other people lining the sidewalk. Since the fountain shows do play every 15 minutes from dusk to midnight, and since they are well worth seeing, plan on seeing them up close from the sidewalk sometime during your visit.

SPIRIT AIRLINES – is starting to serve Las Vegas. This on the heels of Jet Blue announcing that they are entering our market October 10. This opens up new service from New York (Jet Blue) and Detroit (Spirit) as well as flights from multiple cities in Florida (heavily served by both airlines).

FABERGE: TREASURES FROM THE KREMLIN – opens at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art in September running through January 26, 2003. The exhibit will feature more than 100 of the world’s finest Faberge masterworks. Tickets are $15 ($12 for students and NV residents).

SUBSCRIPTION “DUES” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows, and tours through http://www.accessvegas.com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by forwarding a copy to them and suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

SHOW REVIEW:

Bravo Starring Charo – The “Cuchi-Cuchi” girl has returned to Las Vegas. Charo made her Las Vegas debut at the Sahara in the mid-70’s, playing here often as well as making 45 appearances on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, guest star spots on shows like The Love Boat, and recording albums. After taking the better part of two decades off to raise her son in Hawaii, she is making a strong comeback in Las Vegas.

Bravo is an international variety show with contemporary Latin music, flamenco, salsa and samba dancing. While centered on Charo’s multitude of talents (she can do much more than jiggle), she doesn’t try to carry the show. Bravo contains a full cast of musicians, dancers, and specialty acts to create an enjoyable, well rounded show.

After the opening song and dance set, ventriloquist Sammy King and his wisecracking Mexican parrot Francisco do a very funny comedy bit. Sammy King has been performing since 1958 all over the world as well as a mainstay performer of Las Vegas shows. His act is seasoned by his years of performing, but hasn’t lost lost the edge. He is hilarious.

After the dance number “Freedom,” the aerial adage team of Cees and Cathy take center stage. For those not familiar with this art form, it combines dance, strength, and gymnastics performed while suspended high in the air. The male generally wraps his arms around leather straps and floats through the air while supporting, twirling, and twisting with the female in an artful way.

Later in the show, Charo took the stage to perform four classical guitar pieces. While known best for her “cuchi-cuchi,” few know that she trained and performed with classical guitar master Segovia in her birth country of Spain and continues to be a master of the instrument. This segment was long enough to be enjoyable without being an exercise in ego.

Bravo is more likely to appeal to those who know/remember who Charo is or who enjoy the very popular Latin music and dance (which the show has plenty of). The Sahara showroom is moderately intimate and very comfortable, providing the perfect venue for most aspects of this production.

Charo was recently inducted into the Casino Legends Hall of Fame and video highlights of the induction are available at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/news Video highlights of Bravo Staring Charo are available at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/shows

Bravo Starring Charo plays at the Sahara Hotel and Casino. For current times and ticket prices, please click http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=299&cityid=1 and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability.

EDITOR NOTES: For the remainder of the summer, I’m going to publish this newsletter biweekly. I am working on some fantastic new Vegas Internet projects, and although I am gathering some great people to help, this is a hectic summer of expansion. The biweekly newsletters will be longer, but you’ll have a couple of weeks to digest them.

I don’t want to tip my hand too much except to say that this fall, not only will the newsletter be back to weekly, but we’ll have new ways for you to access more Vegas information! To those who have expressed interest in helping, hang tight. I will be getting back to everyone soon.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

4’th OF JULY – Most of the fireworks happen far from the Strip, so it doesn’t hurt to rent a car if visiting this 4’th of July. The only fireworks near the Strip will be at Palace Station and will probably only be visible from the North end of the Strip. Other celebrations happening around town are listed at http://www.lasvegas.com/events/4thofjuly/

TOPLESS SHOWS – Forget the family friendly stuff–the white tigers, the roller coasters, the wave pools. In a town that is constantly redefining itself, what’s old is new again as the entertainment pendulum swings back toward sex appeal. For all the talk about the Disneyfication of Las Vegas as a wholesome, family oriented destination, topless entertainment is making a comeback here in Sin City. Full story at http://www.latimes.com/travel/vegas/lat_vegas010617.htm

VACATION IN VEGAS – In light of higher travel prices, the R-J recently ran an article reminding locals off all the fun there is to do and see on The Strip. This may sound crazy, but the truth is that locals rarely leave their neighborhoods to visit the tourist areas and often aren’t that “up” on what is happening (unless they read our newsletter)! This “local’s” look at things like Adventuredome (which we reviewed at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/circus-circus-adventuredome.htm ), Star Trek: The Experience ( http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/star-trek-experience-las-vegas.htm ), Wet ‘n Wild and other locals attractions is available at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-29-Tue-2001/living/16170350.html

HIGH HEELS – Some older cocktail waitresses are complaining about the medical problems caused by wearing high heel shoes on the job. Full story at http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/nation/states/nv/A7985-2001Jun15.html

URGENT CARE – It isn’t something any of us likes to think about, but occasionally a vacation is interrupted by illness. If this happens to you in Las Vegas, head for the Imperial Palace where University Medical Center has opened an 8’th floor doctor’s office. Print this one out and stuff it in your suitcase — just in case: http://www.viewnews.com/2001/VIEW-Jun-20-Wed-2001/East/16318464.html

MORE POWER – The energy crunch in the West has hammered California, but could turn into a jackpot for neighboring Nevada. The gambling state is courting energy giants, betting that future power plants based in Nevada will help its economy and provide plenty of electrical power to the region. The power companies are responding, with proposals for Nevada plants that would supply more than 10,000 megawatts of energy by 2004. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-29-Tue-2001/business/16152320.html and http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jun-06-Wed-2001/business/16260034.html

COINLESS SLOTS – Casino giant Park Place Entertainment (Caesars, Bally’s, Paris, etc.) has signed a deal to add 15,000 coinless-payout slot machines to many of its 29 casinos throughout the world. For years, conventional wisdom dictated that slot gamblers preferred to receive their payouts in loudly clanging coins, the better to dramatize a win of any size. In fact, an earlier incarnation of the technology was rejected by customers at the MGM Grand, shortly after the megaresort’s 1993 opening. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jun-20-Wed-2001/business/16358878.html and you have one more week to vote in this week’s poll on whether you like coinless slots at http://www.accessvegas.com

CLIMBING THE WALLS – Tuesday night is infamous at Studio 54 at the MGM for EDEN, the “Erotically Delicious Entertainers Night.” In addition to the women swinging above the crowd, sporadic confetti blasts, and bungee routines, they have added the Wall Walkers. Costumed in glossy, body shaping suits, the walkers climb two pillars and then gravitate back down doing acrobatic flips and turns. The more wild festivities start about 2 AM. Guests must be 21 and a dress code is enforced.

DESERT PASSAGE – valet parking is now free. When the Aladdin shopping area first opened, we were among the many who were shocked to pay for valet parking at the parking garage entrance to the upscale mall area. This bucked the tradition of hotels and malls offering free valet parking. We applaud mall management for making this change. Valet parking for the hotel has always been free.

LOW TECH VEGAS – Long time readers know that a pet peeve of mine is how unwired this entire city seems to be. Yes, it is getting better but when you meet someone you are still more likely to exchange phone numbers than email addresses. When I tell people what I do for a living, a common comment is “I’m thinking about getting a computer sometime.” Only a very few hotels send out press releases via email. Don’t take my word for it: A recent article details our low tech ranking at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-28-Mon-2001/business/15922839.html

COMDEX – Believe it or not, hotel rooms are already starting to fill up for Comdex. If you or your company are thinking about coming, do your boss a favor and pass our http://www.accessvegas.com web address along to the person making the travel plans for Comdex or any other convention anywhere in the country. Your boss will appreciate the money you save and you’ll appreciate not staying in some overpriced dive. During Comdex, it is common for fleabag motels on the wrong side of Fremont St. downtown (you know, the ones that are generally overpriced at $99 a week) to charge a nonrefundable $100 a night during Comdex. You can also secure your rental cars early and save through http://www.accessvegas.com

VACATIONS FROM HELL – The R-J just ran two features on vacation horror stories and how to avoid problems when you travel. Worth a read at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jun-05-Tue-2001/living/16216900.html and http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jun-05-Tue-2001/living/16204806.html

BINGO – The Plaza Hotel is offering incentives throughout June to welcome Bingo players to the newest downtown Bingo Room in Las Vegas. The new Bingo room holds 8 sessions daily beginning at 9 AM with the final session at 11 PM. There will be super progressive bonanza jackpots every session with a $1,000 bonanza consolation guaranteed at six of the sessions.

NEW MALL – The on-again, off-again shopping mall between Mandalay Bay and Luxor is back on the Mandalay Resort Group’s front burner, company executives said Friday. Construction on the partially built retail structure will resume before the end of the summer, said Mandalay President Glenn Schaeffer, speaking after the firm’s annual shareholders’ meeting at Mandalay Bay. The mall is expected to open by the end of 2002. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jun-16-Sat-2001/business/16335998.html

BUSY AIRPORT – Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport is set to overtake Denver as the sixth-busiest airport in the United States, according to data compiled by the Airport Council International. According to information released by McCarran, Southwest Airlines, America West Airlines and National Airlines all recorded significant percentage increases in the numbers of arriving and departing passengers in March over the previous March. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-11-Fri-2001/business/16072617.html

ADVERTISING – Although rare, last week someone replied to the newsletter with “QUIT SENDING ME YOUR ADVERTISEMENTS.” For those curious, here are a couple of details on our newsletter and what part of it is advertising:

1. We only send this to people who request it by signing up through the forms on our sites. Our newsletter is probably the easiest to unsubscribe out there. You don’t have to go to a website, enter a password, or type something in the subject box. You simply email the unsubscribe address at the bottom and it is done.

2. The commissions from hotels, rental cars, et. al. support this effort. In addition, costs are covered by the four ads per issue, which are bounded by the =========== dividers. That is the only revenue advertising. I spend hours and hours combing news sources to find the best info to present.

While we do accept complimentary tickets to review a show (which is common in media), long time readers know that I shoot from the hip. Bottom line is that I’m not going to cut any deals that restrict what I can say or which sources I can use. You keep booking with us to help us, and I’ll keep getting you the best unbiased info from all sources!

$100 REBATE SPECTACULAR! Our partners at Hotel Reservations Network are giving you up to $100 back on any stay in Las Vegas or any major city they reserve. (Full details and list of all eligible cities at http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/coupon?SID=IVC&Dest=LAS&LKF=IVC&PROD=HOTEL ). Claiming your cash is simple:

1. Print out: http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/coupon?SID=IVC&Dest=LAS&LKF=IVC&PROD=HOTEL
2. Book a room online at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm
3. Send in for your rebate when you get home.

It doesn’t get any easier than that, and you get their low price guarantee
to boot!

CONCERTS AND SHOWS:

DAVID DARKSTONE – “Illusions & Beyond” has opened at The Frontier. This new afternoon magic show runs daily (dark Monday) at Noon and 2 PM. Ticket price is $12.95 and includes two drinks. You can get them at the box office (new shows like this rarely sell out) or call ahead to (702) 794-8200

FEATURE STORIES: Sheena Easton

“My Baby Takes The Morning Train” … “For Your Eyes Only” …

For most, those are the only two songs that come to mind when someone says Sheena Easton. So I admit to being skeptical when I heard that she was booked to play the entire summer at the Las Vegas Hilton with the possibility of extending the run if it went well. She had just finished a year-plus stint in “At The Copa” with David Cassidy but he was admittedly the star and main draw of that show.

If Ms. Easton has a “star” attitude, she certainly didn’t display it in this performance. After hitting the stage with a tight eight piece band, she ran through a number of standards and with a couple of disco songs thrown in for good measure from her latest European CD. In her stunning evening gown, it was pure lounge. Not the tacky, typical Vegas lounge but old-style classy.

She then took a few minutes to bond with the audience, talking about her kids, her career, and what it is like to be an 80’s sex symbol 20 years later. She joked that her rear end from the 80’s is still alive and well — and that Britney Spears is now using it! While she still looks great, the self-depreciating rant went over well with her (mostly) 30 and older audience.

Playing to a general “Vegas” audience, the odds are that people are coming more for the entertainment value than because they are die-hard Easton fans. Keeping that in mind, she was smart to integrate her hits from the 80’s with classic standards. No matter how you cut it (and how much many of us still enjoy it), music from the 80’s can’t help but sound a little dated.

She ran through “Strut” than did a duet with her percussion player on “U Got The Look” and “We’ve Got Tonight” as well as performing other hits from her repertoire. After letting her band shine in a jam that featured a short solo from each member, she emerged from a wardrobe change and whipped into “Fever” before singing the her obligatory hit “Morning Train.”

Then it was back to a duet on “If You Asked Me To” and “Best of My Love” featuring both her percussionist and her female backup singer participating in lead vocals. She had a very strong finish to the night with “For Your Eyes Only” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”

Easton was signed to play the 350 seat Hilton Nightclub but response has been so strong that many of her dates will take place in the main showroom that was once host to Elvis. She does a great job of entertaining and both her fans and those expecting to see a classic Vegas performance won’t be disappointed.

From what I understand, fish like lobster and crab are served cold at Vegas buffets for food safety reasons. But I agree that the drawn butter should be hot! I shared your opinion of the Rio Seafood Buffet and my full review is archived at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/rio-suites-las-vegas-buffet.htm

De La Guarda is definitely for people looking for a rave-like, artistic, chaotic experience. I found it interesting, but prefer more traditional Las Vegas entertainment. Most people either love or hate the show: there is little in between.

Thanks for supporting our efforts with your business! For reserved seat shows, you stand a better chance of good seats the earlier you buy your tickets and buying in advance also guarantees that you won’t arrive in town only to find a show sold out. I’m pleasantly surprised both at the number of readers using our BookVegas service at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=3230&cscheme=1 and the continued positive feedback regarding it.

Thanks for the reminder of these great specials. I can vouch for them myself as the steak special has been a long time favorite of mine. Ellis Island is a couple of long blocks east of the Strip just set back from the corner of Koval and Flamingo (down Koval a couple hundred feet south). It just so happens that one of my summer projects will be to chronicle and list all of the great “cheap meals and deals” on The Strip and downtown for inclusion in one of our new websites!

By HTML, she is referring to newsletters that look like a web page instead of this plain text format. I’d like to go that route because we can present graphics and use a pleasing format. However, AOL 5.0 (and before) as well as some other email programs can’t display HTML newsletters and I want everyone to enjoy the info. Also, I have heard that the next version of Microsoft Outlook Express might be shipped with HTML turned OFF by default. I appreciate your thoughts and we will certainly make the transition when we can rest assured that everybody will still be able to enjoy our content.
