Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Huge local news week out of Las Vegas, but not necessarily for the right reasons. So we’ll jump right in:

Moron Shoots Up The New York, New York – A deranged man who apparently was looking for a fight with the police and going through immense personal troubles opened gunfire in New York, New York Hotel Casino.

Two off-duty police and two military guys tackled him and kept further harm from happening until security and local police arrived. (Side Note: The hotel noted that they are taking very good care of these heroes and will also invite them for a comped return visit). No one was killed, and injuries to a very few were minor. We’ve gathered the following news links:

Last year, we had the guy high on various substances and (allegedly) thinking that people were after him and that he had to inflict harm on people drove up on the sidewalk by Ballys killing and injuring a number of people.

So, how safe is Las Vegas? Let’s put a few things in perspective: Over 41,000,000 people visit Las Vegas each year. Incidents like this are amazingly few and far between.

In fact, committing a crime in our tourism areas is a foolish act considering that our Metro (Local) Police patrol The Strip, each casino has extensive security to keep you (and their cash) safe, and cameras are everywhere. Very few places on the Las Vegas Strip exist where you are out of site of a security camera.

Let’s put this in a personal perspective: I’ve lived here almost 15 years and have visited The Strip in “tourist” mode* thousands of times. (* Tourist mode meaning out and about actually on The Strip, just as you the tourist would as opposed to someone working in a casino who enters through the back then goes home without ever walking The Strip and experiencing all of the things you do).

I’ve encountered no problems, never been worried, and won’t be staying away from our tourism areas. I’m no math wizard, but you seriously probably have a better chance on winning tens of millions on a Megabucks machine than the odds of having something harmful happen to you while visiting Las Vegas.

The other big story was the heat. Yes… it got damn hot. 116 degrees last week, with overnight lows in the 90’s. A few related stories:

Look… I love Las Vegas. 110 doesn’t register with me. Hot? Yes. But not a problem. We get temps 115 and above less often than many cold climates get blizzards or ice storms. Give me 110 any day over freezing temps. I don’t own snow chains, snow tires, a snow shovel, and own far more shorts than long pants.

Having said that… when visiting here in the summer, please take precautions. Stay indoors, and still keep drinking plenty of water. Our humidity last week dipped to 3% on a number of occasions. Even indoors, water is being sapped out of your body.

My water tip? Skip the bars and their expensive, little water bottles. Every hotel has a gift shop, where you will find more reasonable prices. Up and down The Strip are various sundry stores that also will have big, cold bottles of water at reasonable prices. Use them. (By the way… this same tip for finding more reasonably prices bottles of water also works for finding reasonably priced beer all year long).

Mamma Mia! Lights Up The Stage With Brilliant New Cast Members – In Its Fifth Year Mamma Mia! Continues To Bring Variety To The Stage – The longest-running and most successful Broadway musical to hit The Las Vegas Strip, MAMMA MIA! (Tickets), adds four new, talented principals from film, television and the stage to the Las Vegas cast on July 30, 2007. Recently celebrating its fourth anniversary in Las Vegas and still receiving rave reviews, MAMMA MIA! is fun, energetic and makes “you feel like you’re part of the event”- Las Vegas Review-Journal. Actress Libby Winters, joins MAMMA MIA! in the lead role of Sophie Sheridan, the bride-to-be. With experience in film, television and stage including “The Like Girl,” “Champs” and the New York musical White Noise, Winters brings new life to the show. Click to Read The Full Story …

Academy Of Country Music Awards Nominee Diamond Rio Is Set To Perform Friday, July 13 At Whiskey Pete’s Showroom – After their recent Academy of Country Music nominations for “Vocal Group of the Year” and “Vocal Collaboration of the Year” for “Me And God,” Diamond Rio will perform at Whiskey Pete’s Showroom in Primm, Nev., on Friday, July 13 at 9 p.m. (Tickets) Diamond Rio is best known for their classic songs “Meet in the Middle” and “Love a Little Stronger” and their latest hits “I Believe” and “What a Beautiful Mess.” Click to Read The Full Story …

American Superstars Show At The Stratosphere Casino Hotel And Tower To Add Prince Tribute For A Limited Engagement – The American Superstars (Tickets) show at the Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower will add Jason Tenner as Prince to its line-up of celebrity tributes to yesterday’s and today’s hottest music stars for a limited engagement beginning July 9, announced American Casino & Entertainment Properties officials. “Jason Tenner is a veteran performer who makes you believe that you are hearing and seeing Prince. It takes a very talented showman to even come close to matching the raw energy and musical brilliance that makes Prince so endearing to his fans,” says Mark Callas, who produces American Superstars with his Springtime Productions partner, Donny Moore. Las Vegas Kwik-E-Mart – Yes, the Las Vegas area has one of the only a handful 7-11 stores across the U.S. which have been converted to Kwik-E-Mart stores in honor of the new Simpsons movie. The location is in the suburb of Henderson at 1400 W Horizon Ridge Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89012

Unfortunately, it is about 14 miles from The Strip. Unless you drive to town or have a rental car, expect a $40-60 cab trip (and excessive problems getting a cab back for the return trip. Cabs don’t like serving area neighborhoods when they can be long-hauling tourists, running up the meter, and generally giving out crappy advice that makes them sound “helpful” in search of a bigger tip). Also, be prepared for something that shocks many visitors: You’ll end up in a nice but very normal neighborhood that is night-and-day from the glitz of The Strip.

Gladys Knight Set To Perform At Buffalo Bill’s Star Of The Desert Arena – Motown diva and Las Vegas veteran Gladys Knight will perform at Buffalo Bill’s Star of the Desert Arena in Primm, Nev., on Friday, July 20 at 9 p.m. Best known for time spent as Gladys Knight & the Pips, Knight celebrates her beginnings as well as finds success as a solo artist. Her soulful R&B songs appeal to a variety of audiences with favorites such as “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Midnight Train to Georgia” and singles “That’s What Friends Are For” and “End of the Road Medley: If You Don’t Know Me By Now.” Click to Read The Full Story …

Crazy Girls Volunteer For Double Date To Benefit Adam & Eve Fling – New Vista Community For Handicapped Adults To Benefit From Bachelor & Bachelorette Auction – Two of the dancer-performers from the “Crazy Girls,” (Tickets) the Russian model Valentina Smirnova and California beauty Summer Ferguson will be the first ladies on the auction block on Thursday, July 12th for a double date at the 4th Annual Adam and Eve Charity Love Fling Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction at The Empire Ballroom to benefit the New Vista Community. A VIP table of eight is $500 or VIP tickets are $65 per person while general admission is $20 per person. To purchase VIP tickets call Molly at 702.457.4677 at Ext. 27 or go online at newvistacommunity.org. You must be 21 to attend this function. The VIP party will be from 6 p.m. to about 7:15 p.m. The VIP admission includes guaranteed seating, a cocktail, appetizers; early admission and an awesome goodie bag. The bidding begins at 7:45 p.m. with the “Crazy Girls.” Click to Read The Full Story …

Gambling Talk: Playing Middle Pairs In Tournaments – Part Two – with Victor H. Royer. Playing pocket 10s in late positions: Whenever you find yourself in late positions with pocket 10s, and the action has either been passed to you, or there have been only one or two limpers before it becomes your turn to act, play pocket 10s as if they were pocket Aces. By playing them so strongly you will advertise the fact that you indeed have a very strong hand, and therefore are likely to win not only the blinds, if those are the only opponents whom you are facing, but also the amount that has been invested in this pot by the limpers who have so called before you. NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas and travel from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Cold, cold, cold, cold … we had a very unpleasant two week cold snap. Lows often dipped below 30 and sometimes the highs didn’t make it into the 50’s. This weekend’s forecast is for mid-60’s and sunny so things are back to normal for winter. Now is a great time to book for March and April here and get that early reprieve from winter.

Million Dollar Winner: For the third time in less than six weeks, a Boyd Gaming downtown casino has produced a million-dollar winner. Peggy Beels of Ontario, California won $1.2 million on The Addams Family Reel Saturday afternoon at the Fremont Hotel downtown. Beels, who had invested about $100 on the nickel game, walked away with a check for the full amount. The first thing Beels said she was going to do was to pay off her bills and take a cruise.

NASCAR Fans: Coming to the big race here? You know that traffic to and from a major NASCAR race is bad, and Las Vegas is no exception. The answer? Arrive quickly and in style like the drivers do — in a helicopter from The Strip straight to the speedway! Your NASCAR vacation is a memory, your vacation time is valuable, and you can tell your friends you arrived flying high over the Vegas Strip! My friend John Buch from Maverick Helicopters has arranged great rates for our readers. Contact him directly for details at (click) mailto:john@maverickhelicopter.com

Larry G. Jones, the man of 1,002 voices has a new home. He is very talented, and the price is right. Forget that $100 a ticket for Danny Gans. Jones performs each afternoon at 5 PM in the upstairs showroom of Fitzgerald’s downtown for a one-drink minimum. This guy is going to be one of the next Las Vegas “greats,” so catch him while you still can! (Gans is great, but one of the toughest tickets in town and out of the budget of many visitors.)

Fat Tuesday: Celebrate Mardi Gras at McCormick and Schmick’s Seafood House on Feb. 12. You have NO EXCUSE not to attend the best Mardi Gras party in Las Vegas! There will be food and drink specials as well as a costume contest. McCormick and Schmick’s is about 3 blocks from The Strip on Flamingo (just before Paradise on the left). We are giving away a $50 McCormick and Schmick’s gift certificate this month on All Vegas TV. For more information on the contest, and Bacardi Gras see this month’s All Vegas TV show at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/program (the info is just a few minutes into the show).

We had a great time at Showgirls of Magic recently and this show at the San Remo (next to The Tropicana, steps off The Strip) is a lot of fun for the money. You get beautiful Vegas Showgirls, magic, comedy and specialty acts in a quick-moving show. The early show is covered, and the later show is topless. (Guys … hit the late show with your buddies. You won’t find this much eye candy for the price anywhere else). Ticket and additional show info at http://www.vegasguide.com/detail_shows.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=5&id=94

Speaking of showgirls, a big tip of the hat to E! Entertainment (cable channel) for their “Vegas Showgirls: Nearly Famous” show airing Monday nights at 10 PM. This show covers the lives of four female and two male dancers in Jubilee. Yes, they show the wild nights out that twenty-somethings enjoy here. But they also show these Las Vegas residents fighting traffic, going to Starbucks, and enjoying their apartment / condo pool in the Las Vegas sunshine — what a shock … people actually live normal lives here!

The Fielding West Show: Comedy, Tricks and Naked Chicks opens this week. You may remember him from A&EÆs An Evening at the Improv, NBCÆs WorldÆs Greatest Magic, CarolineÆs Comedy Hour, and NBCÆs WorldÆs Wildest Magicians and having seen him before, I’ll be the first to tell you he is FUNNY! Tickets and more information on all Las Vegas shows available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-shows.htm

We gave the http://www.accessvegas.com main page a much needed makeover. Now you can see hotel specials and coming headliners at a glance, as well as our featured shows. We are redesigning the entire site offline, and in April the new look will debut, make it much easier to find all of the information we now offer across our hundreds of pages of info. Thanks for your patience!

I finally made it up to The Ghostbar at the new Palms resort. With so much to do, see, and cover here it takes a while to get around to everything! Picture a very trendy (and very expensive) L.A. style lounge with a great view of Las Vegas. Dress to impress and be prepared for a $10-20 cover charge and $10 drinks, but worth one visit. You might want to go on a weeknight to avoid the heavy crowds. The Palms is one of our “special value” hotels this month — details at http://www.accessvegas.com

Thanks to reader Amy Hollon for her great article this month on The Mirage. We do accept article submissions, and pay a nominal fee for publication.

Guest Room rates vary by time and season. Check prices and availability online at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm

SIEGFRIED AND ROY: They are the most famous “masters of the universe” magicians, waiting to entertain us along with their beautiful white tigers. Their love for all animals is known to all of us, all over the world. Their professional skills and performances are a rewarding work of art. Lots of precious time spent with their tigers and lions and training them to perfection is truly seen through all their shows. What love and admiration they give to us all.

Performance show times: Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 7:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., Sunday and Monday 7:30 p.m., Dark on Wednesday and Thursday. You can check ticket price and availability at http://www.vegasguide.com/detail_shows.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=5&id=25 This show sells out well ahead of time so if you can get tickets for the dates of your visit, grab them!

THE MIRAGE AQUARIUM: This wonder is filled with sharks and tropical fishes. The aquarium holds up to 20,000 gallons of water. That is a lot of water? You will see it when you enter the hotel registry at the Mirage, located in behind the front desk!

SECRET GARDEN OF SIEGFRIED AND ROY: A sanctuary full of exotic creatures, white tigers, white lions and Asian elephants, where they can live comfortably. Watch these animals on stage performing along with their masters Siegfried and Roy, as they appear and disappear right before your very eyes. The Secret Garden was created as a place where these animals could live free from danger. This is also where one may learn and observe and listen to their exotic creatures.

Siegfried & Roy have their very own website at http://www.siegfriedandroy.com with interesting stories they share about their animals and their love for them.

Dolphin Habitat is another great magical place, where one can take a tour throughout the day. You will be able to see the Bottlenose dolphins swimming and jumping and just having a fun time in the pool. The AccessVegas.Com review of “Secret Garden” and the dolphin habitat with photos is available at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/seigfried-roy-tigers-dolphins.htm

LET’S EAT! The finest place for dining is the “Moongate.” Here you will fine an elegant taste of Chinese atmosphere. The beautiful designs and the surroundings were all very carefully chosen. They offer a Sushi bar. Also serving their traditional Teppan yaki.

Everybody favorite, The Mirage Buffet serves a variety and tasty foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast $8.95, Lunch $9.95, Dinner $14.95. Prices may vary.

Other great places to eat:

* The California Pizza Kitchen is great for the kids, with plenty of pizza on hand to feed those hungry mouths. So what’s it going to be, Pepperoni or Cheese?

* Caribe CafÚ, there is nothing like the smelling of fresh brew coffee in the morning or late at night. They are opened 24 hours.

FEATURE STORY: Cook E. Jarr, Jimmy Hopper

Las Vegas has seen a real trend away from production shows and back toward headlining entertainment, with performers like Danny Gans and Clint Holmes now lighting up the Las Vegas Strip. However, the one thing this city has always been known for are it’s lounges and lounge acts. For free (or the price of a drink), these musicians keep people entertained night after night after night. In fact, the Review-Journal just had a great piece on what it’s like to be a Las Vegas lounge act at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/May-16-Tue-2000/lifestyles/13439055.html

Two of Las Vegas’ most popular lounge acts have been the infamous Cook E. Jarr and Jimmy Hopper. Although their repertoire and styles have little in common, both are over-the-top entertainers in the true Las Vegas tradition. More interesting is that both have just attempted somewhat of a jump from being a lounge act to that of more of a headliner entertainer.

COOK E. JARR – No, that’s not his real name, but that doesn’t matter. He is known to the world as the “Jarr Man”. You have seen him on MTV, VH1, movies, and most recently in the A&E Las Vegas City Confidential that aired last week. People like Tom Jones, George Carlin, The Righteous Brothers, and more show up to see him when they are in town.

cook-e-jarr-jones.jpg (11634 bytes)Jarr (seen at left with Tom Jones) has performed in lounges on and off the Strip for years, and recently made the jump to the Improv room on the second floor of Harrah’s. We were pleased to see his opening show last Friday night along with about 30 crazies from the BigEmpire.Com ( http://www.bigempire.com ) crew. As always, Cook put on a solid 2-plus hours of standards, soul, funk and just about anything else you could dance to! Got a request? Just “Tip the Jarr” — he knows thousands of songs.

On the downside, we are a little disappointed at the new digs and feel it really detracted from all that is Cook E. Jarr. Seating is done my maitre d’, the only cocktail service is cocktail waitresses, and the room is just too big and dark. Great for a comedy show, not a performer. Cook is a “man of the people” and excels in places where there is foot traffic walking by, where people have the comfort of coming and going, and where you can hear the whoops from the craps table in the background. Where he can be a roving party!

While glad to see him at a big name casino where he belongs, I implore the staff at Harrah’s to move him to the new outdoor lounge area. With the new bar, the dancing area, and the foot traffic, Cook would be stopping everybody dead in their tracks!

Cook E. Jarr plays upstairs at the Improv room at Harrah’s at midnight on Friday and Saturday. Two drink minimum. You can see more of him and his famous fans at http://www.accessvegas.com/jarr

JIMMY HOPPER – is another guy we really like. He’s been tearing up the Voodoo Lounge high atop The Rio for the past couple of years, packing them in and making a name for himself. In fact, he’s been able to woo people away from the spectacular outdoor view up there and attract standing room only crowds.

jimmy-hopper.jpg (12397 bytes)Word spread quickly, and the Luxor was quick to give him a headlining shot in their RA nightclub. RA is perfectly suited to Jimmy’s eclectic look and style. This guy is John Tesh on acid, and his music is a melodious sonic assault in the very best way!

He and his 5 piece band profess a love for any and all music, and he proved it with a set list that went from Sinatra to Bocelli (“Time to Say Goodbye”, which many know as the Bellagio theme from their commercials and fountain show). He did a solid Neil Diamond, a comical Cher (always a highlight of his act), and a superb Motown medley. He is not an impressionist — you will recognize and enjoy the songs, but he and his band add their own touches and flair.

He is still getting his “stage feet”. He’s good with the crowd, but understandably not yet Wayne Newton or Cook E. Jarr when it comes to really creating that bond. We are sure that will come with time, and after a couple more months we’ll check him out again and give you an update.

Worth the $32.50? Mmmmmmm … yes if you enjoy a seeing a great vocalist front a very talented band. If you like instrumental jazz, Motown, and the standards “kicked up a notch” (thanks, Emeril), go. You’ll really enjoy the show. Otherwise, you might want to wait. The performance is great, the band is tight, but he is just getting that “headliner” experience.

Jimmy Hopper plays The Luxor Tuesday – Saturday at 7:30 PM. Tickets are 32.50 plus tax. Seating is general admission, and much more comfortable than most showrooms. Drinks are available at the bar. Jimmy has a website at http://www.jimmyhopper.com

Hotels frown on Saturday arrivals. It usually means a room sits empty
on Friday nights. Also, fall is prime time here. While the rest of
the country is in the grips of fall, we still have pool weather.
There also appears to be some minor conventions in town at that time.

http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm is showing Fitgeralds at $59.95 for the
weekend dates and 49.95 for the weekdays (subject to change — rates fluctuate like airline ticket prices due to demand). If they can move their arrival back to Friday night, they can get Las Vegas Club (very
comparable to Fitz and Lady Luck) for $45.95 every single night.

While we do get a small commission on each sale (similar to what a
travel agent gets), we link to
http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm because they reserve blocks of rooms ahead of time and get a volume discount.
They can then turn around pass that discount along to you. This also
means that they are often sitting on rooms when the hotel is “sold
out”. On top of that, they have a low price guarantee. Not a bad
deal in our book!
