LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

TERRIBLE’S HOTEL CASINO – This hotel which sits on the site of the old Continental Hotel at Paradise and Flamingo (about a mile from the Strip) is worth checking out if you drive to town or rent a car. The casino is very nice with a roomy sports book (for a smaller property) and both the buffet and coffee shop are located upstairs away from the casino noise. Plus, a number of food specials (posted both outside and throughout the casino) are available 24/7 in the coffee shop.

The big news? They are using coinless slots that let you take the paper voucher you receive when you cash out and insert it in another machine for play. My early complaint about coinless slots is that you had to go redeem the voucher every time you switched machines but that is a moot point here. FILM AND PRINT – If it seems like you can’t turn on the TV or check out the movie listings without seeing Las Vegas, you are right. Production companies are flocking here to shoot commercials and launch products, and rarely a week goes by without work on a major motion picture. LOW PAY – Las Vegas placed 82nd out of 125 metropolitan cities in a recent study of which cities are the best places to make and save money. Despite the growth, we ranked low in job quality, education, wealth, household income and housing costs. Despite low unemployment, many blue collar jobs don’t pay the big bucks and professionals can expect to start out at a lower rate of pay than the national average. ART AND ARCHITECTURE – The Smithsonian is sponsoring trips to Las Vegas to explore an oft-ignored side of Las Vegas. No one is pretending that Las Vegas is a Mecca of culture, but there are a surprising number of things to see for the highbrow visitor. ROMP THROUGH DOWNTOWN – The Review-Journal just published an interesting article with photos about the Fremont St. Experience (better known to some as “downtown” or “Glitter Gulch”). XFL and WWF – owner / promoter Vince McMahon seems to have a love affair with Las Vegas. The debut XFL game last Sat. night was broadcast live from Las Vegas, drawing 17% of all viewing households (about twice what they expected and more than the much touted NBA double-header the same day.) In addition, the WWF Feb. 25’th Pay-Per-View “No Way Out” will be broadcast from Las Vegas (4:45 PM Pacific).

The XFL was a big hit in the sports books as well, drawing much more wagering than expected. Las Vegas has embraced the team in a large way, but part of that is our way of lashing back at the NFL and NBA. Despite having a metro area population larger than Indianapolis, Orlando, or New Orleans, the leagues frown at owners even thinking about moving here (or awarding an expansion franchise) because of the legal sports betting.

Whether the XFL turns into a hit nationwide remains to be seen. We will report on the XFL when it brings Las Vegas to the spotlight as it did this last weekend, but not regularly.

FEATURE STORY: David Copperfield

When you are going to see the show of the most famous illusionist
since Houdini, expectations are bound to be high, but I must confess that
David Copperfield lived up to my every hope.

From the moment he appears on stage (from nowhere of course), till he
takes his final bow, the entire audience is on the edge of its seats.

The tour, titled Unknown Dimension is designed to allow the audience
to be involved — so watch out because there’s a good chance you might
be picked like I was!

So what did he do to me? Make me disappear? Levitate me? No, he
changed the colour of my pants.

In the cheekiest trick of the whole show, the man who vanished the
Statue of Liberty, levitated across the Grand Canyon, and walked
through the Great Wall of China, swapped the colour of my underwear
with another girl, in a trick which included his classy joke; Should
I do it the hard way … or the easy way. The hard? OK, I’ll take her
out to dinner first. Great.

You could be lucky though. Two members of the crowd were levitated
whilst sitting on a huge red sofa, others had a tissue changed into a
mouse in their hands. This is nothing though, compared with the
finale acts. One sees him picking thirteen members of the audience at
random, and making them disappear (some of them, apparently appear
miles, away, though I’m not sure if that’s all hype), and in the
other, he transports someone anywhere they want to be.

Tonight, he invites on to the stage a teenage boy, who, we are told,
has always wanted to go to Bali. And, believe it or not (literally),
he takes him there. A video screen appears. We see a beach, the sea,
and cameras and crew. A clock shows the time and Bali live is in
the corner.

Yeah, yeah, you’re thinking. That’s ridiculous. The piece in Bali is
all prerecorded. They went and filmed it. We thought the same.
Until he began throwing silver balls in to the audience, with his back
turned. If you caught one you had to go on the stage. He lines the
people up, and takes a Polaroid of them, which he gets one of them to
date and sign. Next, we gets one of then to think of two random
letters, and write them on his arm.

He puts the Polaroid in the boy’s pocket, and leads him to sit on a
throne-like chair. It is on an arm, which moves off the stage, and
suspends over the audience. He throws a silver sheet over them.
Flash. Bang. They are gone … all eyes move to the video screen. A
similar sheet is held over the sand on the beach. Flash. Bang.
There they are. David shows his arm to the camera … with the same
letters on it … the boy takes the Polaroid out … the same audience
members, and signature.

People around me start to scream Ahhhhh! Its raining!!! Spray
covers the audience. Flash. Bang. Mr. Copperfield stands on the
table in front of us, with a grin on his face, throwing sand from his
pockets. Wow.

For those interested in visiting the Gold Coast, a free shuttle runs from the Barbary Coast on The Strip (departing at the side entrance) to the Gold Coast from 9 AM to Midnight every 15-20 minutes. (This is also a great way to get over to The Rio for free as you don’t have to be a hotel guest or produce any ID.)

Every year, I hear stories about people who stake out their seats in the sportsbooks as early as 5 AM to make sure they have a spot for that weekend. I am not aware of any hotel that sets up a separate or expanded area showing all the games, but I don’t pretend to have visited every casino during March Madness. TERRIBLES HOTEL & CASINO – has just opened at Paradise and Flamingo (about a mile from Bellagio). It is the site of the former Continental, but bears no resemblance to that dive. The hotel has been completely renovated and transformed into an Italian Tuscany-style resort. GUGGENHEIM – Two of the most prestigious names in the art world, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the State Hermitage Museum of Russia, announced plans for an ambitious project in Las Vegas, including a seven-story museum. FEATURE STORY: Hoover Dam

hoover-dam.jpg (17845 bytes)Hoover Dam has often been referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. If you have flown in from the east or the south, you might have seen it from the air, but nothing can compare to seeing it up close and in person.

Built between 1931 – 1935 to harness the flow of the Colorado River, Hoover Dam is primarily responsible for storing the water used by people and agriculture in the desert southwest including Arizona, California, and Nevada. California is entitled to 4,400,000 acre-feet, Arizona 2,800,000 acre-feet, and Nevada, 300,000 acre-feet a year from the river, and the dam stores it for constant release regardless of season. Sitting only 30 miles from the Strip, it is also a top tourist attraction for Las Vegas visitors.

Visiting the dam is a unique experience! With US 93 running across it, you are completely free to roam on the top of the dam. The view over the edge 550+ feet in the air and down Black Canyon on the Colorado River is worth the trip all by itself. For a $4 admission, the visitor’s center contains quite a bit of historical and interesting photos and exhibits. However, the real fun are the two tours offered. The shorter tour is fine for most. Taking 30 minutes, you go down into the dam and view the generators and are taken at to the base of the dam, where you can peer down the canyon and up toward the top of the towering structure. However, if you have a sense of adventure or are more interested in the technical inner workings, the one hour Hard Hat tours is a must.

You descend into the side of the dam in an elevator cut through the volcanic rock, and after a short walk through a pure rock tunnel, emerge in the generator room. Unlike the short tour, you are taken via another elevator to the floor of the generating area where you stand next to the huge encased turbines.

You also are taken down below the generating area where you stand just above one of the pipes feeding water through the giant electrical turbines, and can actually see the shaft of the turbine rotating. From there it is outside, for the same magnificent view of the canyon and up at the dam that you enjoy with the shorter tour. You are also taken into tunnels where you can see the huge pipes that were buried in the walls of the canyon.

A real highlight of this trip is touring the inside of the dam itself, which is lined with two miles of tunnels that serve both for drainage (all dams have a minor amount of seepage inside) and inspection. When looking down over the edge of the dam (and especially looking up from the bottom), you might notice a few vents on the side of the dam. Guess what — on the hard hat tour you can actually walk to the vent and peer out at the canyon from the inner center of the dam. Truly amazing.

The tours is not for the claustrophobic, especially the hard hat tour where you take 10 separate elevator rides with 20 people to each elevator car, and also walk the interior tunnels of the dam which are around 5 feet wide and 7 feet tall.

The visitor center is open from 8:00 AM to 5:45 PM. Tours start at 8:30 AM and run the remainder of the day. Parking on the Nevada side (in the garage) is $3.00. Parking on the Arizona side is free. The Traditional tour is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $2 for kids 7 – 16. The Hard Hat tour is $25 and includes a hard hat which you get to keep.

For those without transportation, we offer Hoover Dam tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/hoover-dam-tours.htm If you have drove to town or are renting a car, the dam is easy to find. Head south on The Strip to I-215. Go east on I-215 for about 10 miles until the freeway ends at a set of stoplights. Continue straight about 1/2 mile (I-215 turns into Lake Mead Dr.) to the junction with US 93/95 and head south. Stay on US 93 for the next 20 miles or so (through and past Boulder City). US 93 crosses the dam so once on US 93, you can’t get lost.

An alternate, more scenic route is to skip turning off to US 93/95 and stay on Lake Mead drive. Just stay on it (there will only be one fork in the road: veer right) — it is named Lake Mead Drive for a reason! This route is about 10 miles longer but skirts the lake with some great views before returning to US 93 just a couple miles from the dam. There is a toll station collecting $5 per car on this route.

IMPORTANT: Hoover Dam is a very popular attraction and US 93 also carries thousands of cars each day as the main road southeast out of Las Vegas. Plus, the dam is at a lower elevation than Las Vegas, resulting in temperatures that can be 10 degrees hotter than in the city. This can be brutal late spring to early fall. Also, the tours are usually the least crowded and most available early in the day. Hit the road early. Grab a cheap buffet breakfast at the Railroad Pass Casino (on your left just after crossing the railroad tracks as you head out of town on US 93/95) and get there early to beat the crowds and the heat.

We are glad you had a great time! Unfortunately, it is feast or famine with the taxi drivers. The cab companies, like many other businesses, are having trouble finding and keeping good help. If you are at all geographically inclined, it never hurts to buy a Las Vegas city map so you can have a clue whether they are taking you the best route. If you ever have a dispute or feel that you got ripped off by a cab driver, get the name of the company and the cab number from the side of the cab and call the Taxicab Authority at (702) 486-6532

FEATURE STORY: Pasta Pirate

I’ve received an unusually high number of requests to review this out-of-the-way restaurant in the California Hotel downtown, and I’m glad I did! While “The Cal” is a decent place with some good full-pay video poker machines, I can count on one hand the times I’ve set foot in the place. It is owned by the Boyd Gaming Group (Main St. Station, Fremont, Stardust, Sam’s Town, etc.) and is a favorite of Hawaiians coming over to escape a little “island fever” and enjoy some gambling (which we understand is completely illegal in our 50’th state).

Pasta Pirate takes on the decor on an old warehouse what has been remodeled into an eatery, much the same as the brew pub at Monte Carlo. However, the Pasta Pirate is much more subdued and intimate. I’d be surprised if it seats 100. The high ceiling brings comfort, but does not all detract from the cozy feel of the room. I won’t think twice about taking a date there. What’s more, the room is comfortably trendy without making any age group feel out of place.

What’s more, the prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the service and surroundings. Appetizers lean toward the sea, with varieties of oysters, shrimp, escargot, clams, and crabs ranging from $5.95 to $6.95.

Pasta dishes are $7.95 or $8.95, and you have a choice of Fettuccine Alfredo, Spaghetti and Meat Balls, Penne Diana, Linguine Di Vongole, Tortellini Bolognese, Angel Hair Pomodoro, and Rigatoni Romano. The exception is the Pasta of the Day — a special pasta prepared by the chef — for $12.95.

They really go all out on the entrees with Mixed Seafood grilled in Lemon Basil with Linguine ($13.75), Shrimp Scampi ($13.95), Swordfish Chop al Fresco ($12.95), Lobster fra Diavolo (market price), Cioppino over Linguine ($13.75), Catch of the Day (varies), Sausage and Pepper Bianco ($10.95), Ribeye Steak ($12.95), and Mesquite Broiled Rosemary Pork Loin ($11.95).

Other dishes include Filet Mignon with Prawns ($13.95), Filet with Baby Lobster Tail ($15.75), Alaskan King Crab Legs ($23.95), and Live Maine Lobster (market price).

All dinners come with Seafood Soup or “Pirate” Salad and a fresh bread basket. Pasta dinners also come with a glass of house wine. The bread was an excellent sourdough accompanied by some of the best herb garlic butter I’ve ever enjoyed.

Pasta Pirate is in the California Hotel downtown. Hours are daily from 5 PM to 10:30 PM. Reservations are recommended at 385-1222.

VEGAS ON TV – The History Channel has an hour long special called Las Vegas Hotels this Friday evening. Check local listings for time. A couple of new prime-time TV shows set in Las Vegas debut this fall. “C.S.I” on CBS will be a cop show airing Friday nights before Nash Bridges (which had a great 2-part Vegas season finale) and the WB’s “Nikki” will be about an aspiring showgirl whose husband is trying to become a professional wrestler. (It sounds like a fun show, but I personally put the over/under on that one at about 13 weeks.) ELVIS – RCA is releasing the three-CD Elvis Presley box set “That’s The Way It Is,” which features 66 live and unreleased tracks, including a full Las Vegas concert from August 1970 that was the subject of the documentary film of the same name. FEATURE STORY: Steve Wynn: Running Scared (book review)

While our newsletter appeals to hard-core Vegas visitors wanting to keep up on the latest, our feedback indicates that a number of you have subscribed in anticipation of your very first trip. You might read each week, going “What is all the fuss over this Steve Wynn guy, and who cares”?

Mr. Wynn is the man many feel responsible for inventing the new, high class Las Vegas. He was the brains and the CEO behind the Golden Nugget downtown, then built The Mirage at a time when Las Vegas was a town of cheap buffets, cheap rooms, smoky casinos with low ceilings — much more “Sin City” than it is today.

He has had his share of ups and downs, the latest being the buyout of Mirage Resorts company he built and his latest venture, the purchase of the Desert Inn. The book doesn’t cover the Bellagio era, nor the recent happenings.

Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith set out to write Running Scared: The life and Treacherous Times of Casino King Steve Wynn in 1994, and two lawsuits have resulted. The interesting thing is that the book in nowhere near as damning as one would think would bother the casino mogul, although it doesn’t paint him as a choirboy.

Alleged are friendships and close business relationships with people who are one step away from the mob and / or have had a history of very serious trouble with the police. His temper is chronicled, as well as purported sexual conquests running into the thousands with women ranging from celebrities to keno runners. It is a keen look at what it’s like to be what many consider (at least had up until recently) “the most powerful man in Nevada.”

The downside is that some there isn’t the in-depth analysis of how he pulled off some of his bigger business deals, but more of a “he knew these people that introduced him to these people who financed him” kind of thing. However, those details were probably kept to a minimum to provide an interesting read, and interesting it is. You get a pretty complete feel for how he grew up, developed his charm and ego, and how he is possibly the greatest salesman ever to step foot inside the state.

For those of you who long for stories on the old mob days, the alleged connections to organized crime figures provides quite a backdrop, dating back to the days of his father who ran bingo halls all over the eastern seaboard. If you love to soak up Las Vegas, especially the flash and dash, and hear about how one man took his “over-the-top” vision and made it a reality in everything he built, you’ll enjoy this. From his revamp of the Golden Nugget to the ostentatious Shadow Creek golf course (which had a membership of 1 — Mr. Wynn himself), it is covered.

If you are familiar with him, this book isn’t going to change your mind. Those that love him see it as a terrible account of the man who made Las Vegas what it is, and those who hate what they feel are his many abuses of power and being “above the law” will find plenty to fuel their fire.

Running Scared; The life and Treacherous Times of Casino King Steve Wynn is 330 pages, hardback and sells for $24 — not cheap, but less than 2 1/2 rolls of quarters (in Las Vegas terms). It’s a riveting read that I had trouble putting down, and I’d suggest it as a great way to get hyped on that next long car ride or plane flight here. Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

Unfortunately, I don’t have control over expiring or changing links. This

Spring and fall are prime times here with the great weather (often pool weather while the rest of the country is burning heating oil). When you add in events and conventions, the demand drives up the price. We strongly suggest adding http://www.accessvegas.com/events.htm to your favorites (AOL / WebTV) or bookmarks so you see which days or weeks have less convention traffic.

The tourism areas of Las Vegas (as well as the city in general) are very safe. Casinos have both uniformed and plainclothes security inside and out. Plus, cameras are aimed at virtually every corner of the property, from the front door (including outside) to the back. The general safety precautions you take on any vacation should suit you well here. The only problem I have ever encountered in any tourist areas are the panhandlers downtown, and I just ignore them and keep walking. There is too much security for them to start yelling at you, or get in your face.

I would suggest not walking more than one block from the Fremont St. Experience downtown. Trust me, there is nothing to see outside the very safe casino areas, and once you get a few blocks from the tourist areas, downtown isn’t the most crime free. I also wouldn’t suggest wandering off down side streets on the Strip more than a block or two. While not a high crime area, there is no reason to take chances. The exceptions are generally Convention Center Drive from Stardust to the convention center, Flamingo Rd west to The Rio or east to The Maxim and Ellis Island, and Tropicana east to San Remo and Motel 6.

I’m not saying that everything else is a high crime area, but it’s always safer to stay in the tourist areas where there are lots of people around when in an unfamiliar city.
