Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Super Bowl weekend was huge, with about 285,000 people in town, and it seems like everybody had a bet on the game. I have little interest in either team and simply bet for fun. In Nevada, we call it a “TV bet” when you bet on a game just to have some rooting interest. I lost my bet (Seattle to win +165 … that means I picked Seattle to win and would have been paid $165 for every $100 I bet … getting a bonus for taking the underdog) but had fun watching the game.

February 5 Insider Vibe Broadcast/Podcast Is “On The Air” – The latest weekly edition of our new broadcast is available now! I’ll keep you updated on the latest news, events, and exclusive commentary so you can have the true scoop on what is happening in Las Vegas. Click over to Radio @ and listen now so you don’t miss a thing. I cover exclusive information in the broadcast that isn’t in the newsletter!

Valentines Day is almost here. Guys … if you are like me, you forget about it until the last minute. Well … now it’s the last minute and if you want to bring that special lady to Las Vegas, don’t delay. Rooms are going very, very, very fast. I would do the following:

1. Visit our friends at Las Vegas Hotel Deals and lock up that room immediately.

2. She’ll forgive that you flew in coach on some discount airline (and almost forgot about Valentines) if you treat her with a limo ride from the airport. So book your Las Vegas Limo Reservation now. And if you can’t get the mid-week off to take her, make her day special with a card that says “We are going to Vegas soon!”

Carrot Top Review: I Can’t Believe I
Watched the Whole Show, and I Liked It!

By Phil Arnold
December 2005

Carrot Top las vegas hotels hiltonHow long has Carrot Top been around and how famous is he? I don’t have a clue about the answer to those questions, and his web site certainly didn’t help me find out information. Carrot Top may be a publicity hound, but what does that have to do with his show? Nothing I guess. I enjoyed watching this show and I was surprised.

Carrot Top does annoying commercials, kind of looks like the Wendy’s girl as he brings up in his show, but he is a unique type of comic. He is what I call a prop comic. I have seen this before in Las Vegas with a comic by the name of Joe Trammel. But Carrot Top is much more accomplished and has about four trunks of props he goes through during a show, maybe more. Click To Read The Complete Review

Volcano Time Change At The Mirage – The Mirage volcano now erupts at the top of each hour from 6 p.m. to midnight. Each night the explosive show transforms a dramatic waterfall in front of The Mirage into a spectacular, flame-throwing volcano with molten streams of lava. More than 3,000 computerized lights create this nightly optical illusion. The nightly show is free to the public.

Featured Story: Carrot Top, Greens of Las Vegas

Carrot Top – I finally checked out Carrot Top on the invite of his local PR staff. He’s been headlining here for years, and all I knew about him was his Jay Leno appearances and the phone commercials that seem to play non-stop. Was I ever happy to finally check him out live!

A prop comedian, Carrot Top’s stage is filled with trunks and trunks of gags. Sounds like it would get boring after five minutes? Not even. This skilled performer rarely let up, with gag after gag after gag that had the audience laughing non-stop for the entire performance. Nothing was off-limits, from politics to NASCAR to poking fun of the very hotel he was performing at.

The show is PG-13 because of a little bit of language, but nothing that will make anyone blush. And he pulls off his entire show without getting into raunchy humor, making this the perfect fun show to take your teenagers or even Grandma to. Carrot Top plays now through September 17 at the MGM Grand. Catch him this time, but if you can’t we’ll remind you before his next headlining run.

Greens Of Las Vegas – Want some golf, but don’t want to take up hours of your vacation time or travel miles from The Strip? We had a great time at the Greens of Las Vegas, close to The Strip and just south of the Hard Rock Hotel.

Imagine a top-notch golf course minus the fairways. Hole after hole of challenging but fun putting greens outdoors in a beautiful setting. This isn’t mini-golf, but carries a couple great advantages: You can enjoy the course in about an hour, and the non-golfers in your group can still play and enjoy this experience because no fairway driving is involved.

The greens has a full pro shop, and a comfortable, upscale “19’th hole” restaurant and bar called Bogee’s. A full golf experience that doesn’t eat up your entire vacation!

Check out the Greens of Las Vegas website for more information, and a couple of great money saving coupons. With the perfect, warm fall Las Vegas weather at hand, we had a great time and you will too on your next trip!

Mamma Mia!
The worldwide smash hit is now playing Mandalay Bay Resort.

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-2.jpg (24789 bytes)Have you ever been to one of those seaside aquariums? “Baby, this ain’t one of those.” Mandalay Bay’s new Shark Reef features some of the most exotic and dangerous aquatic animals in the world and puts you right in the middle of it. They have built one of North America’s largest displays of sharks and other salt water predators.

The first part of the tour is through a tropical jungle, complete with lush green surroundings. You weave your way through a maze of a number of reptile displays, giving you possibly the closest ever safe look you’ll ever have at these intimidating creatures.

From there, you continue to walk through what looks like an ancient temple that has been claimed by the sea, eventually ending up underwater in part of a wrecked ship, surrounded by 1.6 million gallons of ocean water right here in the middle of our desert. These dangerous sharks, schools of fish, and displays of some of the most exotic marine life known to man aren’t just beside you, but above and below you as you walk through clear walls, floors and tunnels. (For the claustrophobic, let me note that the central rooms in the aquarium are very large — this isn’t like being stuck in an elevator).

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-3.jpg (27099 bytes)Shark Reef includes almost 100 different species including:

Sharks: Include blacktip reef sharks, bonnethead sharks, nurse sharks and lemon sharks. Some species of sharks at Shark Reef will grow to be more than 12 feet long.

Tropical and Fresh Water Fish: Include several species of angelfish, puffer fish and tang fish. Venomous tropical fishes include such species as the radiated lionfish and coral catfish.

Reptiles: Crocodiles, green sea turtles and ravenous water monitors are among the reptile species displayed at Shark Reef.

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-4.jpg (27925 bytes)Eels/Marine Invertebrates/Rays: Eels, invertebrates and rays each have exhibits to showcase their species at Shark Reef Moray eels, southern stingrays and hundreds of moon jellyfish are among these creatures.

We have a few minor complaints. Shark Reef is quite a hike from the main casino area (past the pool, the arena, convention area and then a little farther). They are looking to expand the resort in that part of the property, which will eventually feature a duplicate of their guests-only swimming area that will be open to the public. We hope they have some airport style people movers in the plans also.

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-5.jpg (15684 bytes)There are flat screen monitors throughout the display but they don’t say much. Perhaps more informative multimedia displays are planned. Also, the $12.95 price was drawing a few grumbles from people at the ticket booth (although none once they were inside). Perhaps a $10 ticket price in line with the Secret Gardens of Siegfried and Roy would be in order. (Our Secret Garden review with photos is available at ).

Still, it is a pretty captivating experience and if you have even a remote interest in natures more exotic displays, it will be money well spent. There were plenty of children and teens who were thoroughly enjoying it but it left us adults just as much in awe.

Shark Reef is at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Open daily from 10 AM until 11 PM, admission is $12.95. Children 12 and under and Nevada residents with ID are $9.95.
