Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! What a strange week it has been. The weekend of October 11-12 brought record cool temperatures (highs in the 60’s F). Things have rebounded nicely, but the sun is down around 6 PM and the evenings are cooling off quickly.

Las Vegas Bikefest Photos – We have the rest of the Bikefest photos from the downtown Las Vegas event a couple of weeks ago. Important: None contain anything you won’t see on basic (U.S.) cable TV but they might not be considered safe for work. Click on a photo to see the associated gallery:

As noted last week, if bikes or girls aren’t your cup of tea, have no fear. Coming issues will debut new photo galleries and updates on some of the great Las Vegas Strip hotels and casinos plus a new Bellagio Gardens photo set! And don’t forget, below each and every photo in our vast Las Vegas Photo Gallery is a “send to a friend” link.

At Tale Of Two Plazas – A local jury has decided that the hotel that may (or may not) end up being constructed on the site of the old Frontier Hotel can use the name The Plaza. This despite the fact that downtown Las Vegas has had a hotel named Plaza since the 1970’s. This because the company building the new hotel here owns New York City’s Plaza hotel, which has a 100 year history.

What a huge mistake that would be! Look… I love the downtown Plaza hotel. I’ve easily visited it hundreds of times in my 15 years here in town. When I lived closer to downtown, I’d head down to Fremont Street 6-7 times per month, parking at The Plaza and stopping for a libation and a few hands of video poker before heading out to unwind, people watch, and grab something to eat. However, let’s not mince words: The downtown Plaza isn’t a luxury resort.

The New York City Plaza is known for being the crÞme de la crÞme. Top notch all the way. However, I’ll bet you that over 95% of Las Vegas visitors aren’t remotely familiar with it. The risk is that when people hear the name Las Vegas Plaza, they will associate it with the more modest downtown property. Visitors who visit downtown will tell friends “We went to the Plaza, it was nothing special.”

An analogy: Lexus isn’t about to come out with a car model called Kia. Nothing wrong with a Kia (Kia owners are laughing with every gas station they pass), but it isn’t a Lexus in terms of luxury. Nothing wrong with the downtown Plaza, but risking association with it when you are going to attempt to build a world-class hotel is simply an error.

Dive-In Movies On The Beach Canceled – The 2008 Dive-In Movies at Mandalay Bay Beach, previously scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24 and Friday, Oct. 31, have been canceled. No reason was given.

Halloween In Las Vegas Event List – As promised last issue, we have started compiling a list of Las Vegas Halloween Events. More event notices are coming in every few days, so you may want to bookmark that page, tell your friends about it, and check back often.

Enjoy This Issue!

Paris Las Vegas to host 2nd Annual Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration – Following last yearÆs inaugural celebration, Paris Las Vegas is proud to announce its 2nd Annual Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration set to kick-off at 12:01 Thursday, November 20, 2008.

Honoring the long tradition regulated by French law, Beaujolais Nouveau, a red wine made from Gamay grapes in the Beaujolais region of France, is released no sooner than the third Thursday of November, when it is ready for consumption just six weeks after the harvest. Congratulations to Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular on two successful years here in Las Vegas! What Is Up With The Lady Luck? – This is one of the most consistent questions we’ve received over the past couple of years. Here’s the latest:

The City of Las Vegas is trying to sweeten the pot for the Lady Luck owners to make it worth their while to get underway on the upgrades and renovation needed to re-open. The city is considering selling the city-owned land north of the hotel to the Lady Luck owners at a significant discount. However, the present economic climate might still make any construction/renovation financing tough.

Menopause The Musical – Laughing With Life’s Changes

by Sarah Steinberg

Since March 2001, the hilarious show “Menopause The Musical” has entertained and inspired women from coast-to-coast and internationally. The work of writer Jeanie Linders, “Menopause The Musical” is a 90-minute production that’s sure to tickle the funny bone. Whether you’ve been through menopause or not, this makes for an evening you’ll never forget.

The show is a celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or who have survived the dreaded change. For our four not-so-young gals, it’s the dreadful change. We follow the trials and tribulations, mostly the trials, of four women: the business executive, the housewife from Iowa, the washed-up soap star and the middle-aged hippie.

Stripper 101 – Saucy, Sexy Sin City Fun

By Devon Brooke Clasen

A class not likely to be found at any university, Stripper 101 at Planet Hollywood offers lascivious ladies not only some sexy striptease skills, but also an afternoon of exercise, laughter and lessons in a truly enviable Sin City art form.

Arriving at the V theatre, attendees are directed to a small bar area for a short wait, where they may survey a variety of center stage performances staged in the Miracle Mile shops, including magic, acrobatics and comedy. Each participant is presented with a waiver release form, which they’re told they must sign before participating in this physical and somewhat rigorous class. A cocktail is included with the purchase of a ticket, no doubt aiding the ladies with the release of inhibitions required to attend such a tantalizing tutorial.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

I love the news letter and read it every time it comes out. Thank you.

I have to tell you about our last fabulous trip to Vegas. We are a little bit over average players and haunt mostly HarrahÆs properties with the occasional foray into Bellagio Mandalay Bay.

We were playing at Caesars and I hit $30,004 I ran to my wife who was thrilled, and she immediately hit $10,000 on some machine. Needless to say it was great but doesnÆt end there for a break we went to Bellagio and she hit another $10,000. Bellagio then bought us dinner and to show our thanks we hit a couple of other small jack pots. It was a great day.

We got a lock box at HarrahÆs and went to Fremont Street and damn if she didnÆt hit $10,000 at the Golden Nugget (sheÆs my favorite wife).

This trip was beyond our wildest dreams and of course I went to the Big boy room and played the big boy machines and won a little there I had Caesars cut a check so I didnÆt get drunk and blow it all.

We came home paid off every bill we had (except the cars and the house) and had enough left over to give to my good Uncle Sam on April the 15th.

I know that this was a once in a life time trip and will treasure it always, but I wanted to share it with you and say the Strip pays OK on occasion.

Jerry from Vero Beach Florida

Ted Responds:

Wow… that is one incredible run and the thing dreams are made of. Thank you so much for sharing it with us and let’s have some of that luck rub off to the rest of our readers for their next trip here to Las Vegas!

Say what you will about budget hotels my wife and I have returned to the Trop every year since 2001. It’s a little seedy sure, but the laid back atmosphere, the beautiful pool and old Vegas ambiance is as good as it gets. Add to that a Garden room with outdoor patio among the palm trees while enjoying a brandy and soda — heaven on earth. Good Lord willing, we’ll be back — at the Trop.

Al

Ted Responds:

Mark Jacobs (our News Researcher/Editor) had his parents in town a few weeks ago. They booked before he really knew and had a chance to take care of them. (They didn’t want to “trouble” us plus they had friends with them).

They stayed at Tropicana and had no problems at all, and found it a good value. The pool is great, and the location is great. Because the Tropicana is always a candidate for getting bought out and/or imploded, they aren’t pouring money into upgrading it. But despite the amount of feedback we get from visitors, I can’t remember the last time someone had a complaint about the “bang-for-the-buck” at Trop.

I recently visited Vegas for 4 days and enjoyed it. BUT the tables and slots are getting very, very difficult to win at. It is once in a blue moon that you win anything. I thoroughly enjoy Vegas and always have. I have probably made at least 15-20 trips there.á

Due to the ôtightnessö IÆll probably look elsewhere from here on in. The last few trips I keep telling myself that things will get better but they actually got worse. IÆll miss everything else about Vegas but when I gamble I need to win every once in awhile.

Thanks for the newsletter I enjoy that as well.

Christopher Kujawa

Ted Responds:

You aren’t the only one. While it is still possible to come and have a great run like Jerry did or at least go home a winner, table game rules are worse and slots seem tighter. You used to be able to put $20 in a machine and know you’d get some decent play. Now it seems like you might as well set the $20 bill on fire. As I’ve noted before, Nevada gaming revenue is down. Perhaps if they gave you a better shot at winning (like they did for decades), people would be willing to play more.

Thanks for the input and thanks for reading. Please do tell your Vegas visiting friends about the newsletter!

I really look forward to receiving your wonderful news letter. I have been going to Las Vegas at least once a year for over 30 years now and I enjoy the town but I REALLY enjoy the news letter. so, keep up the outstanding good work!!á

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! We are revamping our newsletter site https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com into a blog-style format. We’ve been doing this newsletter (which pretty much amounts to a weekly blog) since 1999, long before the word blog or blog-style websites existed. For those of you who read this newsletter online, bear with us. The current blog format is very readable, but can (and will) be inproved over the next few weeks to match the look, style and readability of our online version.

This also allows users of RSS/XML feeds two options for following everything here at AccessVegas.com:

  • Only This Newsletter: https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/feed/
  • Everything new on AccessVegas.com (show reviews, photos, new stories and features) as it happens:

An “Only In Nevada” Type of Gas Card Promotion – According to the Review-Journal, A brother in Beatty, NV (about 130 miles north of Las Vegas) is offering gas cards ranging from $50 to $100 depending on how much you spend. Although the long-standing myth is that prositiution is legal in Las Vegas, the reality is that it is not legal in any county of over 400,000 residents. This includes Clark County (Las Vegas) despite all of the “dancers” to your room handbills.

Since Clark County is roughly the size of New Jersey and Las Vegas is centrally located in the county, this means quite a drive for those who want to indulge in the “world’s oldest profession”.

My suggestion if you are going to drive a couple of hours from Las Vegas? Take in Dante’s View which overlooks much of Death Valley. (Just don’t do it in the summer). Google Maps Street view has a great 360 degree shot of Dante’s View.

Open Your Wallet For Nevada Education – Once upon a time (prior to 2000), families didn’t move to Las Vegas in droves. Families living here didn’t expect Nevada to rank high nationally when it came to education. In fact, I recal numerous business news stories in the 90’s noting the difficulty of recruiting family men to work here in Las Vegas.

Most people were employed in gaming (or tourism-related jobs) and gaming taxes did a fine job of helping fund education.

Oh… how times have changed. Over a million people (including many families) have flocked to live here since then and now expect our education system to be as good as it was in the high-tax states they fled from. And… they want to do it on your backs. Right out of the pocketbook of our visitors. Read more: Nevadans say let tourists pay – Support strong for raising hotel room tax from 10 percent to 13 percent

Las Vegas unelmployment rate is above the national average. I wouldn’t suggest moving here unless you have a job waiting for you. Ironically enough, it is the construction downturn playing a big roll. Fewer people moving here means less new home, condo, and apartment construction. Not trying to sound negative. This is a great place to visit, and a pretty cool place to live. If you have a job.

Jay Leno’s Las Vegas shows next week will benefit Iowa flood victims. Emmy Award-winning comedian and television host Jay Leno will perform two special engagements at The Mirage Wednesday, June 25 and Friday, June 27 at 10 p.m. with proceeds going to The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. Tickets are priced at $90 plus tax and are available at The Mirage box office or call (702) 792-7777.

My dad was born in Iowa where the family ran a service station in Dubuque before relocating to Santa Monica, CA in his youth so I have some ties to the state. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see the flooding and our hearts and prayers go out to all affected.

Crazy Girls Keeps It Simple, Yet Sensual and Captivating

by Guy Chapman

For over twenty years now, “Crazy Girls” has just been one of those Las Vegas mainstays. From its iconic bronze statue in front of the Riviera that tourists rub for good luck, to the ads that one can’t help but see when traveling The Strip, it’s easy to see why, once stepping into the fun-filled and sexy world of “Crazy Girls”.

The closest comparison to defining “Crazy Girls” is similar to what people would expect a classic “Golden Age” Las Vegas show to be. The girls perform a variety of acts that are playful and cheeky to sensual and alluring, set to music from the classic burlesque age to more modern songs. “Crazy Girls” keeps it simple, yet captivating, and for regular show-goers on The Strip, it makes for an experience that isn’t going to be found just anywhere else.

HI Ted,

I recently visited Vegas for 4 days and enjoyed it BUT the tables and slots are getting very, very difficult to win at. It is once in a blue moon that you win anything. I thoroughly enjoy Vegas and always have. I have probably made at least 15-20 trips there. Due to the “tightness” I’ll probably look elsewhere from here on in.

The last few trips I keep telling myself that things will get better but they actually got worse. I’ll miss everything else about Vegas but when I gamble I need to win every once in awhile.

Thanks for the newsletter I enjoy that as well.

Christopher Kujawa

Ted Responds:

You aren’t the only one. Gaming win keep dropping despite pretty steady visitorship. Those with no clue blame it on the economy here in the U.S. but the rest of us know better:

Table game rules are worse and slots seem tighter. You used to be able to put $20 in a machine and know you’d get some decent play. Now you might as well set the $20 bill on fire. Why even bother? Your money is better spent at a top-end show, one of the many area tours (Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam… even a Mob Tour), or blowing it on a fine meal. At least you are getting some bang-for-your-buck.

Side Note: If gambling, do it downtown. The table game rules tend to be more favorible to the player and the slots seem to be looser (from the many reports that we get). Plus, they are much more thankful for your patronage.

Thanks for the input and thanks for reading. Please do tell your Vegas visiting friends about the newsletter!

My husband and I jst returned from Vegas. We had the the best time at the Cher concert. What a lovely lady she is and her show was worth the trip. I love Vegas! Keep up the good job you do on your newsletter. I read it everytime.

Thank You,

Kay

We are looking to get married in our fave place Vegas in may of 2009. We wanted to do it at The Nugget downtown as it has a large special meaning to us. No Elvis or married by Martians. Just a simple ceremony with a few close friends. Any do’s, dont’s or any other thoughts?

We both went through the big Circus wedding and now after finding each other (the mate we dreamed of) we just want something simple and nice. Any thoughts would be helpful!

Tim and Mary

Ted Responds:

Tim and Mary,

Contrats and a couple of thoughts:

I don’t believe that the GN has a wedding chapel. However, an overlooked way of doing a wedding is to rent one of the nicest suites (the kind with more than one room, a great view and similar) and have the wedding there. one can do this regardless of hotel.

The downside is having to do a little bit of legwork to arrange the minister, cake, and similar but a web search can go a long way there.

Also, much can probably be catered by the hotel. You may wish to call the hotel, tell them your thoughts, and ask what they can do (and the cost).

If you even want to keep things more simple, ask about the possibility of doing the ceremony by the pool, in a lounge (before it is open for the evening) or even on the casino floor. I know of a popular Los Angeles TV personality who got married at the craps tables at Caesars a couple of years ago!

If you want a bunch of random well-wishers, you can even get married on Fremont Street in front of the hotel.

Bottom Line: Provided you are staying at said hotel, call ahead and tell them you want to get married at the hotel and make it clear you want to talk to someone who handles group events at the hotel (or at least someone in catering). That person is best suited to work with

Hope this helps and please let us know your progress!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Wow… what a huge week. We usually don’t publish over the weekend, but better late than never. NASCAR is rolling through town, and rolled right up The Strip (as we previewed last week). Numerous drivers did meet-and-greets around town, with the most lavish being Kurt Busch’s appearance at PT’s Sierra Gold Ultra-Tavern (also as previewed last week). We’ll have photos of both next issue!

We also have over 25 new writers and bloggers, many already out on assignment. A few weeks ago, we asked your opinion of how we were doing with the newsletter and virtually everyone said “Don’t Change Anything.” So we aren’t changing. We are expanding our overall coverage! The newsletter will basically stay the same, but new blogs will cover specific niche topics so you can better stay informed on exactly what you enjoy about Las Vegas!

I Want To Rock and Roll All Night – Norm! of the Review-Journal is floating the rumor that Paul Stanley of KISS may be joining Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular (Tickets). Unlike many gossip mongers who throw caution (and accuracy) to the wind, Norm’s info is usually sourced pretty well. This could be huge: KISS has a large, loyal fan base that spans generations and Phantom has some serious theatrics and special effects sure to please KISS fans and expand the reach of Phantom’s crowd. We’ll keep you posted!

How can anyone live here? This frequent comment is heard by visitors during the summer months when we can have day after day of temps pushing 110 degrees (F). Funny… we were sitting watching all of the snow, ice, freezing rain, cars sliding all over the road and people bundled up head-to-toe this past week in much of the northern parts of the U.S. and we were thinking the same thing: How do you live there? I was in shorts and a golf shirt most of the past week.

What are the best jobs in Las Vegas? The Las Vegas Business Press ran down some of the “I really get paid to do this” job in Las Vegas, including a casino host, helicopter tour pilot, and more. (Not sure how they left me off this list). A fun read at Las Vegas’ hottest jobs … and who has them Some of the city’s jobs are almost as cool as some of its guests

Gambling Talk: Video Keno – Part Six – with Victor H. Royer. 3-6-9 – Among keno players, this ticket and game are known as “the three way kiss.” You figure it out. It is another version of the 9-spot way ticket that I have just shown you immediately above. On this ticket, however, you can only pick three groups of 3 numbers, making a total of three 3-spots, three 6-spots (although it really should be six 6-spots), and one 9-spot. Therefore, on the pay table there are only three possible winning combinations, and these are pays for the 3-spots, pays for the 6-spots, and the pays for the 9-spot. Hello and thank you for your newsletter. My friends and I visit Vegas 2-3 times a year and find access Vegas very helpful in keeping up with all that is happening. I just wanted to say that you mentioned doing a different format for the news links. I find them very useful the way they are.
Thanks,

Sharla
Columbus, Ohio

I thank everyone for the kind words. Rest assured that we won’t be cutting down on the type of information we do. However the newsletter is getting unbelievably long. It was only a couple pages long when we started in 1999 and now prints out at about 12-15 pages! What we may do is publish all of the news links in a secondary section which you can reach with one click. But rest assured, we’ll be providing as much (if not more) news and information as we ever have!

As a frequent visitor to Vegas, and a former cab driver, I would like to share a couple of stories about cab rides. A few years back I was out at MGM Grand. I had done pretty well on Blackjack and it was time to head back to the Plaza (where we were staying at the time) when I got in the cab the driver took a right on Tropicana and I asked him ” you’re not going to take Paradise Road?” He said no. I then said “Oh, your going to run the interstate to get the fare up?”His reply was “Are you from Vegas” When I replied no, he then asked “so what makes you an expert! I went on to explain that if he ran Paradise Road, the fare would be around 7 dollars to the Plaza and running the “SLAB” would more than double that. He laughed. I told to go which ever way he wanted, but the most he would get from me was the amount on the meter plus a tip to total $20. When I arrived at the Plaza, via the interstate, the fare was $19.85. I gave him a 20 and said keep the change. If he would have run Paradise road, he would have gotten a 13 dollar tip instead of 15 cents.

A few years later we were staying at the Nugget. There was a group of ten. We took two cabs. Our driver ran the downtown streets to Paradise Road and straight to the Airport. The fare was under 10 bucks so we each gave him a five for a $15 dollar tip. The other group’s driver ran the Interstate and the fare was $22 . He got a $3 dollar tip.

Since that time 11 years ago. I have been renting cars when I come to Vegas 3 times a year and have saved a ton of money on cab fares.

Chuck Merica

This long-hauling just doesn’t stop. Locally (away from The Strip), I recently needed to use a cab. The intersection I asked the cabbie to take me to was north of our location. The cabbie headed south. After about three blocks, I asked why we weren’t headed north to the cross-streets I asked for. He u-turned and noted that he doesn’t usually work that part of town. Funny… he could have asked me where to go, or got out a map.

Just a reminder about leaving the car rental lot: I was by that area today and traffic was stacked on Warm Springs Road (which runs from the rental car lot to Las Vegas Blvd). One again, you don’t have to turn south (to the right) when you leave the rental car facility. When exiting the garage, jog to the left a bit and turn LEFT out of the facility on to Gilespie (road rental facility is on). You’ll start to see the Strip Hotels about a block up the street. Keep driving north towards the hotels in the distance until you are forced to turn left on Sunset. Then a quick right on to Las Vegas Blvd. and you just saved yourself 10-15 minutes of sitting in traffic!

THIS ISSUE: Steve Wyrick: World Class Magician

EDITOR NOTES: Where have we been? I blew off publishing last week to take care of pressing obligations in other areas, but (knock on wood) we are back to weekly starting this week! I hope everyone is surviving the heat around the US. It is too bad we can’t export our dry air to you.

A few new format changes: The hotel specials have been been expanded moved to the end of the newsletter. When warranted, I’ll have tidbits of interest to local’s in a new area called “Local Notes.” No more weather listings. We have a link instead so you can punch up the most up-to-date forecast before your visit.

In order to keep the length of this newsletter under control, I’m encouraging people with feedback regarding specific Las Vegas hotels, shows, attractions, and general trip reports to post them to our Comment Las Vegas message board at http://boards.accessvegas.com The upside of that is far more people will read your comments over time. We still welcome general letters to the editor.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

BIKINI CONTEST – Mandalay Bay pool will be the site of the World’s Largest Exotic Bikini Contest on Friday, Aug. 31, with over 200 women competing. Full details and photos at http://www.accessvegas.com/bikini-contest-las-vegas-photos.htm

BELLAGIO #4 – The Bellagio hotel-casino has been ranked the fourth-best hotel in the world by readers of Travel & Leisure, a major travel magazine. The $1.6 billion Bellagio was surpassed only by the Four Seasons Resort Bali and Jimbara Bay, the Ritz-Carlton Chicago and the Ritz-Carlton Naples (Fla.) in this year’s rankings, set for release in this week’s issue. The rankings are derived from surveys sent in by the readers of the magazine, which has a circulation of more than 1 million. Full story at http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/gaming/2001/jul/16/512086342.html

NORTH STRIP – now should be known as the fun end of The Strip. The Strat Tower features two thrill rides over 1000 feet above the earth as well as probably the most spectacular view in the city. The Sahara features Speed: The Ride, the NASCAR Cafe, and $1 blackjack all the time. Kitty corner from that is Bonanza Gift shop, billed as the world’s largest and a fun place to poke around for an hour. On the same corner is Holy Cow, Las Vegas’ first brewpub. Story with photos at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Aug-05-Sun-2001/living/16582798.html

RED DRAGON CASINO – Many in town over the past few months asked about the making over of one side and the facade of the Desert Inn. It was painted red and the marquee said “Red Dragon.” As reported here, this was for the Jackie Chan movie Rush Hour 2. A review of this movie (of which a fair amount was shot in Las Vegas) at http://inq.philly.com/content/inquirer/2001/08/03/weekend/RUSH03.htm

DINING OUT – The economy’s unevenness has caused some restaurant companies to say diners have lost their taste for meals out. But in Las Vegas, many eateries say business now is as good as it’s ever been. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-29-Sun-2001/business/16574207.html

CANYON RANCH SPA – Today, practically all new upscale resorts include at least a small spa, says Walker, and many of the new spas are downright huge, from 10,000 to 100,000 square feet. In opening the spa, The Venetian, a 2-year-old posh hotel with more than 3,000 guest rooms, wasn’t really taking that big a risk. Like swimming pools in the ’50s, hot tubs and saunas in the ’70s, and golf courses in the ’80s, the spa has become the must-have accouterment of the luxury hotel. Full story at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-5.htm

NORDSTROM – Nordstrom also announced yesterday that construction will begin this week on a store in Las Vegas, its first full-line store in Nevada. The 180,000-square-foot store ù being built at the Fashion Show mall ù is scheduled to open Nov. 1, 2002. Full story at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-1.htm

VEGAS TV – taping for upcoming Travel Channel broadcast include “Vegas Cops,” “Stickmen of Las Vegas,” and “Vegas Challenge,” “Las Vegas Showgirls: Making It,” “Two for Las Vegas.” Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-23-Mon-2001/living/16587239.html and you may remember that we posted info here a few weeks ago for those looking to participate in “Two For Vegas.” Pays to read!

THEMED WEDDINGS – The owner of Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, 1205 Las Vegas Blvd. South, DeCar recently remodeled a portion of an old hotel into a themed bed and breakfast with 32 rooms, including a Gothic room complete with headstone headboards and a coffin bathtub; an intergalactic room with galaxy murals and a spaceship bed; and a Blue Hawaii room, modeled after the Elvis Presley movie of the same name. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-22-Sun-2001/living/16401273.html

BINION’S POKER ROOM – New Binion’s Horseshoe poker room manager Tom McEvoy plans major changes for the casino’s card room and the World Series of Poker. He plans several big changes to the poker room, which has been hurt by competition for high-stakes players from Bellagio and The Mirage, and for lower-stakes players from locals casinos closer to the homes of Las Vegas residents. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-20-Fri-2001/business/16570352.html

COFFEEMANIA – We have not had time to check out this new Internet Cafe yet, but it looks promising. The only negative for tourists is the location: halfway between The Sahara and The Stratosphere. The serve gourmet coffee drinks plus tea, smoothies, pastries and other food items from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. High speed Internet access is $6 per half-hour, and access is quick for those with a car (just use the Holy Cow parking garage right behind the place). Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Aug-01-Wed-2001/living/16572965.html

JUBILEE TURNS 20 – Linda Green anchors her long legs under a piece of scenery and starts her nightly sit-ups. Torso rocking up, then back effortlessly, she strikes up a conversation. After 20 years and more than 12,000 performances as a principal dancer in “Jubilee!” she is a familiar part of the topless revue, nearly as much a fixture as the stage. Full story and behind the scenes look at the show at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-29-Sun-2001/news/16649192.html

2002 OLYMPICS – Las Vegas is hoping to benefit from the numbers of world travelers coming to the 2002 games in Salt Lake City, UT (one hour by air and under 6 hours by car). Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-22-Sun-2001/news/16527603.html

ZAGAT – The famous food guide has nothing but good to say about the variety of fine dining options in Las Vegas. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-24-Tue-2001/living/16570195.html

WINE E-BOOK – People strolling through the Mandalay Bay resort often stop to gaze at the wine tower in the midst of Aureole. Forty-two feet tall, it is more than a conversation piece. It is the heart of Charlie Palmer’s restaurant, a symbol of the role wine plays in the restaurant. The real buzz is coming from the eWine Book, the first electronic wine list that lets diners browse through the restaurant’s catalog of more than 3,500 wines with just the tap of a stylus. Story at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-4.htm

FEATURE STORIES: Steve Wyrick: World Class Magician

Up at the North end of The Strip in The Sahara hotel, sits a mysterious airplane hanger. Area 51? A deserted air strip? Close — it is the 900 seat showroom for Steve Wyrick: World Class Magician.

While diverse, many of the main illusions follow an aviation theme. The show prelude video shows Wyrick running late and taking a helicopter to the showroom, where he is “lowered through the ceiling” via helicopter to arrive just in time for the show. Another illusion involves him standing in and walking through a huge 747 turbine jet fan. Obviously, a real 747 get engine revved up would suck Wyrick and half the audience into it, but the engine was true to size and made for an enormous and compelling illusion.

The show is huge, not all of the illusions are dependent on gigantic props and staging. He brought a couple of audience members onstage, sat them at a table, and did the 654 club card trick, where despite shuffling and letting the spectators cut the deck, he presents card combinations (4 jacks, etc.) and lays them on the table while he tells the tale of a group of men at a nightclub. What made this work is a live camera operator onstage with the video displayed on a huge screen for the crowd to comfortably see.

However, the majority of the show relies on the huge, Broadway quality sets including one where Wyrick is on a “big city street” set, on a running Harley Davidson (you could smell the exhaust) only to be lifted in the air, vaporized, and appearing at the back of the theater with motorcycle in a flash.

The finale keeps with the aviation theme, as a full size twin engine airplane is made to vanish from the stage in a matter or seconds.

I was left with mixed feelings about the show. Part of that stems from the fact that attendance is on the sparse side. No fault of the show quality, but probably because The Sahara doesn’t have the foot traffic by the front door that other resorts do and 900 seats are hard to fill for any production show.

Having said that, he’s only charging about half of Lance Burton and 1/3 of Siegfried and Roy and you are getting a full scale Vegas magic show with the huge props, the attractive dancers / assistants — “the whole nine yards.” You get plenty of bang for the buck at $34.95 (plus tax). If you are a budget conscious traveler, or taking family and want to see a full Vegas magic show without going broke, this is the show. The upside of the light crowd counts is that you are probably going to get a pretty good seat, even if you are a “walk up ” (no reservations) customer before showtime.
