Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Our best wishes go out to all those in Hawaii affected by the earthquake over the past week. About one million Hawaiian’s visit Las Vegas each year (out of some 40 million total visitors), so we know you are reading and wish you all the best in recovering putting life back together for those affected.

I need to stop jinxing the weather! It seems like every time I mention it, the next weekend results in lousy weather here. Last issue was no exception: For the first time in a long time, I mentioned the weather and Friday night a strong thunder and rain event rolled into town, dousing us for about 24 straight hours. Sorry! (BTW, weather for this weekend? Predicted to be around 80 with sunshine).

The names Steve Wynn and Le Reve are usually associated with the show Le Reve at Wynn Las Vegas. However, as many of you have heard, Mr. Wynn accidentally put a hole in the actual Picasso painting named Le Reve with his elbow as recounted in this story. Steve Wynn suffers from an eye disease that has been limiting his peripheral vision for years, most likely the cause of this boo-boo.

Costly mistake? Might be. He had just agreed to sell the painting for $139 million USD. The sale is off for now as the painting needs restoration. On the flip side, paintings with a story behind them are often more valuable, and this masterpiece now has even more allure. Time to re-write those art history books!

Nevada might have a smoking ban soon, and I’m surprised that this has received such little attention in the tourism media! As usual, we keep you informed on subjects others may overlook, with all the facts plus my commentary. Later in the newsletter, we’ll get you up to speed and give you a chance to make your voice heard, pro or con.

Enjoy This Issue!

Review: The Capital Grille

by Zabrina Rodriguez-Rapozo

As we entered the Capital Grille for a cozy Saturday lunch, the hostess asked if we had a reservation which seemed odd for a place gleaming with empty tables. After gathering some menus and seating us at a beautiful table overlooking the Wynn resort, the question seemed more like a formality and not a requirement for a weekend lunch. I have always been impressed by steak houses’ stark white layers of table cloth and waiters using the popular “crummer” utensil to dust ubiquitous crumbs of bread on to the floor. Such was the case at the Capital Grille. . Click to Read Complete Review

I was amazed to read that the citizens of Nevada are voting for a ban on smoking. Whilst I respect their rights (it’s their State) to express such an opinion the reality is that the majority of people frequenting the State are visitors.

These visitors provide the finance to manage the State and make the major contribution to the wealth (and job retention). Without the free spending Japanese and the Europeans, Vegas revenue will drop alarmingly and as such Casinos will close and jobs will disappear.

Have the citizens thought this through?

Allen B. Sage

Ted Responds
:

Allen,

We have two competing anti-smoking measures on the ballot that will be voted on by the Nevada in about three weeks. For those wanting the specifics, I encourage you to read Smoking measures compete – Backers of both initiatives stress protecting children.

Personally, I don’t smoke. In fact, my grandfather died from a smoking-related illness. Having said that, smoking is a legal product at this time and I am very disturbed by those attempting to tell business owners what they can and can’t allow in their businesses. If non-smoking businesses are in demand, the owners will choose to prohibit smoking in their establishment on their own. In fact, and number of restaurants in the Las Vegas area have done so of their own accord.

Of the two anti-smoking measures on our ballot, #5 would pretty much ban smoking indoors anywhere, while #4 would allow it in bars, restaurants, casinos, and other similar places where smoking is already popular (continuing to leave it up to the business whether they want to allow patrons to smoke). If both measures pass, the one simply with the most votes becomes law.

Nevada is infamous as a state with more freedom and less regulation than other states. However, as people move in from other states, they bring their ideas and desire for their laws, which is very unfortunate. I may or may not choose to do things in my life, but it’s not my business to tell you what to do in yours. And while these anti-smoking campaigns are touted as “saving children from second-hand smoke,” perhaps parents simply need to refuse to take thier children to establishments which allow smoking (if the parent feels this a concern).

My opinion: If you move to Nevada, here’s a concept: How about you embrace Nevada and the freedoms we have here. If you are a “pleasure police” member who is out to force recycling, eliminate smoking, eliminate automobiles, dictate what others can eat and drink, and generally try to use the law to enforce your way of living on others, keep heading west… to California. Or go back where you came from.

Final Important Note: Because of the response this is likely to generate (both pro and con), please do not email me personally on this. I’m simply one person. Instead, click to this area of our message board where you can post your thoughts for the world to see. Las Vegas visitors don’t get to vote on this issue, but you can certainly post comments and let the world know how you feel leading up to election day!
