ALWAYS PLAY LOADED – No, not drunk. That option is up to you. But you don’t want to be like the Utah man who lined up all of the Megabucks symbols a few days ago with only two coins in the machine when the maximum bet is three coins per pull. Instead of winning the $8 million jackpot, he walked away with $10,000. Not a bad chunk of change, but every day for the rest of his life he has to wake up knowing he could have been a millionaire. With rare exception, standard slot and video poker machines pay much more when you hit the top jackpot with full coins in. If you can’t afford to play a machine “loaded,” move down to a lower denomination machine.

MEGABUCKS HITS! – This JUST came in before I got ready to send this. A New Hampshire man who was playing with three coins in hit the $8 million jackpot at The Orleans earlier today.

NO STORM YET – Last week, we reported the debut of this new show was set for March 22. The debut has been delayed, with no new date set.

BABY’S – Night Club at the Hard Rock hotel is growing in fame for their celebrity visitors as well as hosting events like Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s recent birthday party. They are allowing us to offer you E-vite Tickets for upcoming events at Baby’s. They will send you an E-vite ticket via E-mail that will be PRINTED OUT BY YOU and have your Name, Date of attendance, and amount of guests (+3 max.) which will be checked at the door.

THUMP – This Friday night dance show aired nationwide on WGN (12:30 AM Pacific) is now shooting at Club Rio inside The Rio hotel on the first Friday of each month. They tape all the episodes for the month on one night, so this is a good chance to get your mug on TV and let your friends see a little of your Vegas vacation.

GROWTH – Nevada’s population since 1990 grew by nearly 800,000 to nearly 2 million last year and the Las Vegas area has ballooned to more than 1.3 million people. FEATURE STORY: Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas is about as close as you can come to a generic budget Las Vegas show. Fortunately, the price is modest and it doesn’t claim to be any more or any less. Las Vegas’ longest-running afternoon show combines singing, dancing, and comedy into an entertaining little mix.

Principal singer Natalie Carson opens the show and performs a number of songs throughout Viva accompanied by five sexy female dancers. It makes good entertainment and pleasant eye candy.

The comedy lineup is subject to change, but they manage to always have a couple of pretty good talents. The emcee (who’s name I failed to record — my apologies) had a few new twists on the standard Vegas jokes (losing at craps, the all-you-can-eat buffets) and kept everyone entertained.

Big John” Bruce Mickelson appeared later with his special brand of southern humor, playing the “good ole’ boy” that he probably is, and building up a great comedy performance with his comments on the way things are between men and women today.

Viva Las Vegas shares the showroom with American Superstars (reviewed https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-11-08.htm ). While a little bit boxy, the room has the latest in lights and sound and is large enough that you are seated around tables with plenty of elbow room. This helps contribute to the over quality feeling for a somewhat no-frills show.

The closing act is “Golden” Joe Baker who does an Elvis impression that is like none other. Kind? No. Entertaining? Not bad.

Viva Las Vegas performs daily except Sunday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Stratosphere’s Broadway Showroom. Tickets are $13.95 plus tax and may be purchased at the Stratosphere. Check by the casino cage first, as they have a rack of coupons that allow you to get the show free with the purchase of two drinks ($9.95). The show is “all ages,” but there are bare bottoms on the dancers and a few swear words and slight raunchy jokes in the comedy bits so bring children at your discretion.

Because the Stratosphere is located at the far north end of The Strip, it is wise to spend a few hours and take it all in. This time of year, you can catch the 4:00 PM Viva Las Vegas, head up to the top of tower for happy hour in the lounge (which lasts until 6:00 PM) enjoying cocktails with the view, and get to watch the sunset shortly after. Seeing both The Strip and downtown morph from day to night with that panoramic view is a fantastic experience. Also, you can buy a discounted ticket at the box office which includes tower admission and a buffet, getting both at a savings.

Editor’s Note: I received more negative email regarding last week’s review of “EFX Alive” starring Rick Springfield than I have ever received regarding any topic. While some of it was from subscribers, it appears that some was also orchestrated by fan club members (or similar). Guess what, Springfield fans: I grew up listening to Van Halen and Def Leppard and playing heavy guitar. If there was any guy I wanted to say nice things about, Springfield is one of them.

Unfortunately, the fans missed a very large point: I don’t write reviews to make a certain casino happy, nor someone’s fan base. My obligation is to the regular readers who spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars to come to Las Vegas. Their time is valuable and my goal is to present honest information that helps them make the most of your precious time here.

I am going to devote the letters section this week to their comments as my responses might provide a little insight into the “how” and “why” of my reviews. Because many of the letters echoed the same comments, and some weren’t signed, I will not be acknowledging specific writers.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

>I would like to offer explanations as to your
>other observances.á Firstly, please remember that at
>the time of your review this show has not even run a
>full six weeks.á During this initial period, Rick has
>been hit not once, but twice, with extremely bad colds
>and throat problems — to the extent of cancelling two
>days of shows and barely making it through another two
>performances.

Given that terrible bouts of cold and flu have been going through town the first two months of the year, this might explain some of the vocal problems and even the uninspired acting in the first act. I have been invited back to take another look at the show, and will do so in two months then file an updated report.

>The review of the FX ALive show in Vegas was very poorly done.á He
>claimed that the fan in the audience that Rick Springfield talked to,
>and talked on a cell phone was staged.á Well he obviously hasn’t been
>to any Rick’s concerts.á Nothing Rick does with the fans is staged.

It is staged. Mike Weatherford of the Review-Journal noted the same at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-09-Fri-2001/weekly/15392334.html I was informed that on tour he takes a phone from an audience member during “Don’t Talk To Strangers” and calls one of their friends. But I felt that staging it made for a very weak part of the show, and one that people outside of a star’s fan base wouldn’t find very interesting.

>I hope that your company provides health insurance.á Obviously this
>man is in need of medical attention for his ears.á His hearing must be
>fading.á Anyone that thinks Rick Springfield has limited range has
>some type of problem.á You have never heard Inside Silvia then either.
>He is a very talented musician, and has brought a renewed energy to
>EFX.

Many wrote similar to the above, noting the renewed energy Springfield brought to the show. Interesting, considering that Tommy Tune did about 10 straight minutes of tap dancing as well as dancing his way through much of the show. I’m not much of a Broadway nor a Tommy Tune fan, but I can’t say that the Springfield version had more energy.

>Maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to rip on him.á He was approached for
>the show many times before he finally agreed so obviously someone
>other than you knows talent when they see it.á I have seen nothing but
>positive reviews of Rick in EFX except for you and one other, but the
>positive FAR outweigh the negative.

Many sent me the list of positive “EFX Alive” reviews. A number of them were from publications that rely strictly on hotel advertising for their revenue. If a hotel is spending $10,000 on a full page ad, you think the publication is going to run a negative review? Just for kicks, I should put a big reward up to ANYBODY who can find a negative review of ANYTHING in the glossy tourist magazines you find in hotel lobbies or hotel rooms. They don’t exist.

Interestingly enough, my comments that the show is pretty spectacular but that Springfield struggled in areas were noted by Mike Weatherford (link noted earlier) and Erin Auerbach of Las Vegas Weekly at http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/departments/2001_03_08/stage.html

I don’t get paid a dime to publish this newsletter. In fact, it eats up 15 hours of my week. EDITORS NOTE: It is a beautiful 74 and sunny here today after two weeks of mostly clouds and a number of days of actual rain. Two huge sporting events brought the spotlight to Las Vegas again this weekend: The NASCAR race as well as Holyfield vs. Ruiz made for a crowded weekend and sold out hotels.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

RED DRAGON – If you have been in town past couple of weeks, you might have seen the new marquee of the Desert Inn aglow in neon reading “Red Dragon,” new red paint of the front of the building, and a flurry of activity out front looking like a casino grand opening. STORM – Billed as a “combination live concert event, Broadway theatre experience, and Las Vegas dance spectacular,” this new show at Mandalay Bay opens March 22. The creative mind behind the show has worked with Britney Spears, American Music Awards, Ricky Martin, Madonna, Prince, and more. Band members have played with Ricky Martin and others. We saw 3 numbers at a media preview Tuesday, and the show looks like it has quite a bit of potential. One number features rain on stage, and actual (very light) snow falls on the audience later.

If you go see storm, I suggest sitting toward the back left side (as you face the stage) as one number has the singer suspended over the right side of the audience and another has extensive acrobatic action taking place over the most of the lower section. Until a full show review, I can’t say whether it is worth the $55 / $65 ticket price, but the show is heavily Latin influenced (including at least one number all in Spanish) so take your music and culture tastes into consideration.

NASCAR – Jeff Gordon took the lead with 20 laps to go at last weekend’s race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Stories about the race at:

FEATURE STORY: EFX Alive

“Jesse was a friend …” sang Rick Springfield all over the radio during my high school years, and I was a fan of guitar driven rock. I think I still have a couple of his tapes somewhere. Almost 20 years later, Springfield is the latest star of the MGM’s spectacular EFX show taking over the reigns from Broadway legend Tommy Tune (who replaced teen idol David Cassidy, who replaced Michael Crawford). I’m sure they were after the very positive response David Cassidy got from audiences during his two year stint, but they goofed.

The show itself is still spectacular and one of the better staged shows for the money. Sal Salangsang does a hilarious pre-show warm-up (get seated 15 minutes early) and they have added him in a couple small parts throughout the show for comic relief. The trapeze artists in the P. T. Barnum act have been replaced with a dazzling act called “The Sphere” where a number of athletic circus performers hang and twist from a giant rotating sphere.

The Merlin act with the large animatronic dragons, fire, explosions, and great stunt work are still fantastic. The Houdini segment (the one act where Springfield shines as the infamous magician coming back from the dead for a momentary reuniting with his wife) contains the thrill of a great magic act woven into a touching story. And, the H. G. Wells act continues to contain the best 3-D film performance I have ever viewed.

The problem? Springfield. He practically sleepwalks through the first part of the Merlin act, where the lead flashes back to his childhood reminiscing about the expanse of life as well as bad dreams. Previous performers brought a contemplative, childlike feeling to it. Springfield might as well have been reading it off of cue cards. His acting throughout the rest of this act gives us an indication why his movie career never took off.

He redeemed himself in the Houdini segment. His soap opera experience served him well in the love scene and he played it in a heartfelt manner that would have been nice to see earlier. Maybe a rocker can’t play out a child’s fantasy. Unfortunately, we now know that a rocker can’t sing show tunes. Springfield’s voice is great for guitar heavy, rough singing but his limited range and raspy vocal qualities struggle on many of the songs (many of which have stayed with the show regardless of who plays the lead).

The low point? While he is in the audience during one number, he meets a “fan” whom he invites down on stage. This isn’t new — it has been a staple of EFX for quite some time. The “fan” is an audience plant who is “thrilled” to be meeting the star. In this case, the “fan” even has Springfield use her cell phone to call a friend at home who couldn’t believe what was happening. This bit plays on too long this time around and is so phony that a number of colleagues who were seeing the show for the first time could see it is fake. If you go, this is a perfect time to take a restroom break. Any time would be a perfect time for them to toss this bit and have Springfield take a little concert break and perform two or three of his hits. He does perform “The Human Touch” earlier in the show.

All is not lost. The basic tenants of the show are still spellbinding, from the huge stage sets to the amazingly creative “circus of the future” costumes to the effects which the show derives it’s name from. I last reviewed the show almost a year ago (archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-04-26.htm ), and my comments about the core show still hold true. At the basic price, EFX still delivers the most bang (literally) for the buck in it’s category. And, the standing ovation that Springfield received from women in the audience who probably went to high school about the same time I did suggest a dimension that I am not equipped to appreciate.

November is the month of Comdex (usually second week of the month) and Thanksgiving weekend, both bringing sold out hotels and high prices. Plus, with the winter months really kicking in up north, many are looking to escape the cold. If you are still flexible, try every different set of arrival and departure days you can make work in your quest for low airfare. Obviously, the sooner you book the better. While I hate to turn away business, a travel agent might be able to arrange a group rate for hotel and air for a party that large and do your research for you.

I have not yet been to Blue Note, but hear it is worth checking out. They have name acts virtually every single night, so expect to pay a concert ticket price. Let us know your impressions if you go! As for nightclubs, The Drink caters to a younger, crazier crowd, Rumjungle has the “beautiful people” (and a line to match at the door) and Voodoo lounge is upscale and a little more subdued but with possibly the best view in town. All are worth checking out — go to the one or two that would be the best fit for you.

University Medical Center is a highly rated hospital, but it is also a public hospital which can mean long waits for illness that isn’t life threatening while they treat the latest gangbanger who got shot. As for transportation, the monorail is coming but for now you have a tradeoff: the bus is cheap, but very slow. Taxis aren’t cheap at all. Rental cars are a good option when time is more important than money plus you can take all the back roads.

EDITORS NOTE: It has been raining for 3 straight days here in Las Vegas (much needed, but I know it dampens a usually sunny Las Vegas vacation). However, that is child’s play compared to the earthquake that shook Seattle Wednesday morning. My brother and his family live in the area, and I fly through Sea-Tac on a regular basis getting a connecting flight to my hometown of Portland, OR.

From my talks with people flying SEA-LAS on my return trips, I know that people in the Seattle area love Las Vegas and assume we have pretty serious readership in that area (all we have are email addresses — except for tracking country domains, I have no clue where anyone who subscribes lives). To our friends in the Pacific Northwest, we are happy to hear that the loss of life and injuries was very minimal, and wish you and those around you the best over the next few weeks of cleanup and recovery.

SIEGFRIED & ROY – have signed their new “lifetime” contract at The Mirage. The new contract stipulates a 44 week per year schedule, and eight shows a week (down from the 10 they were doing). FEATURE STORY: Mac King

I’m pretty happy. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a bad show. The odds are in my favor as I tend to review only established shows so we know they will be here when you get here, and if a show has been around a while (with few exceptions) it usually is making its target audience happy.

Mac King has been playing Harrah’s for over a year, shouldn’t need an introduction. He has appeared on television shows ranging from “An Evening At The Improv” to all five of NBC’s “World’s Greatest Magic” specials. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, upon seeing him you will remember him as “the guy who did the funny magic on TV.” And funny, Mac King is!

He takes the stage in a vintage plaid suit (vintage early 1900, not vintage disco era) with a story about a rope trick his grandfather taught him. You’ve seen rope tricks before? Not presented quite this way. From the first moment, you can tell that despite his sometimes silly demeanor, he has the craft of magic down.

King brings out an old fashioned chest containing his props and you never know what he is going to pull out of it next. Unlike Carrot Top, whose props are the joke themselves, Mac uses everything from worms to goldfish to a box of cereal to a stuffed tiger to perform “how did he do that” magic while leaving you laughing in the aisles. The finale is a “tribute” to Siegfried and Roy in which he makes both himself and a stuffed tiger disappear that reappear in a funny but spectacular way.

Eschewing assistants, King interacts with members from the audience using volunteers to help him in a couple of his more impressive illusions in this one-man show. It is pretty clear these aren’t audience plants. In fact, if you see this show the day or two after your wedding, you might end up on stage helping in the “Cloak of Invisibility” trick where Mac puts on a yellow rain coat, tells us to pretend he is invisible, then moves cards from the new wife to the new husband without touching either of them.

This is the best show deal in town. Period. You can’t go wrong paying $14.95 for the hour plus show, and the hour flies by. Plus, it is a perfect way to break up your afternoon gambling or sightseeing (or just recover from that “all-I-did-eat” buffet), give your feet a rest and your mind some refreshment.

I’m a big fan of Casino Royale. Their parking garage is a best kept secret (right behind the hotel, gives you quick access to Harrah’s, Venetian, Mirage), and when friends that like to booze come to town, I just tell them “Casino Royale: import beer and a shot of name-brand booze for $4.00 total.” Plus, the staff is very friendly.

The Rio buffet is really hit and miss. It was a novelty as the first “station” buffet in Las Vegas (different ethnic food stations) but pay the extra $3-4 and go to the Aladdin buffet where the food is topnotch and the decor colors don’t scream at you.

Thanks for the heads up. One of the definitions of infamous is
notorious. I was attempting to find a word that described the
wide variety of emotions various race fans felt toward him
(he was either adored or despised) and looking back,
I could have used a better choice of words. I know that NASCAR fans are very passionate about their sport and certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone.

BAD INTERSECTIONS – Once again this year, the worst intersections for traffic wrecks are on The Strip. Tropicana and LV Blvd. (The Strip) was the worst, with Flamingo and LV Blvd. coming in second. The scenery is distracting, but keeping your eyes on the road and using your turn signal might just prevent you from driving home (or turning in your rental car) with a big dent in it.

CELEBRITY CHEF – Well-known local chef Les Kincaid’s 1.5 hour weekly show features famous restaurateurs, celebrity chefs, cookbook authors, winemakers, vintners, master sommeliers and all of the entertainers living or working in Las Vegas. This is a “must” for those of you who enjoy the top notch epicurean offerings that Las Vegas now offers. The show airs at noon Pacific time on Saturdays on KDWN 720 AM which you can listen to online at http://www.broadcast.com/radio/talk/kdwn/ The show is now also aired on the Cable Radio Network (check your cable listings for station).

DALE EARNHARDT – Thousands have showed up at the NASCAR Cafe (Sahara Hotel, see our restaurant review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-03-15.htm ) to pay tribute to the infamous driver who lost his life in last weekend’s Daytona 500. FEATURE STORY: Clint Holmes

Someone once joked that Las Vegas is full of headliners who are “the biggest names you have never heard of.” You get off the plane, drive down the Strip, and see names like Danny Gans or Clint Holmes and you see their faces in the tourist magazines and ask yourself “What do they do, and why are they worth some of my hard earned gambling money”?

Actually, Clint Holmes is no stranger to the music business. In 1974, he scored a #1 hit with “Playground In My Mind (My Name Is Michael)” and over the years appeared as Joan Rivers’ sidekick and announcer on “The Late Show” as well as work with both Entertainment Tonight and a successful run in Atlantic City.

You may enter the showroom not knowing who he is, but you won’t leave that way. His mother was a classically trained opera singer from England and his dad was a jazz musician from the US That left Clint blessed with not only an amazing technical singing ability, but the emotional flow to put with the pitch. Combined with his live 12-piece band and the modernized showroom at Harrah’s and you have every element for a great show.

Clint performs the work of other artists as well as original songs in a free-flowing expose of his life story. Not Broadway, but a little bit of background and banter here and there to weave it together. Fortunately, his life story is interesting, and the music is enjoyable.

His camaraderie with musical director Bill Fayne is sincere as their friendship dates back many years. While most stars want the spotlight to shine on them alone, he shares it with every member of the band, each extremely talented in their own right working together for a magnificent collaboration.

This show is “Old Vegas” style entertainment. The mood is upbeat, friendly, and warm. The songs range from jazz to soul and over the course of the show, Holmes creates a strong bond with the audience. If you want to hear techno and see people fly off the walls, try De La Guarda. If your tastes lean more toward sitting with a drink and enjoying and appreciating a fine artist and showman take the stage and entertain you, pocket a couple of chips from your first winning session at the tables and set them aside to see Clint Holmes.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

THE VENETIAN – continues to be a huge success for owner Sheldon Adelson despite a rough opening (the hotel wasn’t quite ready), union pressure (it is non-union), and higher interest notes (construction funding) than a large corporation would have been able to garner. The hotel is showing a profit, and they are finally getting serious regarding the expansion that will double the hotel’s size. In addition, expansion and remodeling of high roller suites will place the hotel in competition for “whales” (the highest of the high rollers with casino credit lines starting at $1 million). MGM THEME PARK – is changing its focus and the name. Except for the Sky Screamer and a couple of other rides, the rides will be removed and the focus of the park will shift to hosting movie premieres, concerts, and TV shows. The new moniker is “The Park at MGM Grand”. The potential of the park was never fully realized, and ended up not fitting into the new “adults only” theme that many Las Vegas resorts are marketing. SNOW – As recently reported, Mt. Charleston gets snow during the winter providing a winter wonderland less than an hour from Las Vegas. TAILGATE PARTY – Local NBC affiliate KVBC 3 is throwing a free tailgate party this Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium before the kickoff of the Las Vegas Outlaws vs. Los Angeles Xtreme game (5:00 PM tip-off, national broadcast). It is free to the public and will feature food and drink, classic cars, and a bungee run. BEST HOTEL – The Bellagio was picked as the #1 hotel with the most perfect settings and amenities for honeymooning couples by 100 travel agents. FEATURE STORY: The Dream King

Elvis has returned to the building. His legend never left Las Vegas, but now when we think “Elvis impersonator” we think of a guy with a bad dye job, gold sunglasses, and very long sideburns who has seen way too many trips to the buffet. If that is your impression of a “Vegas Elvis”, you have not seen Trent Carlini.

Carlini’s show starts with a video tribute to Elvis, mixing clips of Presley with a Carlini narraration that is part tribute to Elvis and part the story of Carlini’s devotion and love of the music. When Carlini hits the stage, you have to do a double-take because he is virtually a head-to-toe living replica of the younger Elvis.

Throughout the 70 minute show, Carlini takes you through a journey of the various stages of the life of Elvis in song, and does so in matching costume. He appears first as the young Elvis, then performs more work from his early career in a military uniform, after a short but insightful video montage of actual Elvis army footage and interviews. From there, he dons leis and a hawaiin shirt to sing hits from Elvis’ movies.

After another short video, he performs a tribute to the ’68 comeback “Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite” special complete with the black leather outfit. No tribute to The King would be complete without the “Vegas Years” with the big white jumpsuit and a lighthearted lauging version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight”. Elvis fans are probably familiar with the live Las Vegas version of said song done by Elvis where something got him going and he couldn’t stop laughing throughout a part of the song. This segement also included him handing out scarves to some of the lucky ladies in the audience.

If you are a big Elvis fan (or just learned quite a bit watching the many TV specials and documentaries shown on cable TV), you will appreciate many of the nuances like the laughing part that Carlini tosses in.

I’ve seen plenty of Elvis impersonators here in Las Vegas, and most of them get by on the look and moves, with vocal’s that are just in the general vicinity of Presley. Even if you are just a casual fan, you can’t help but to be impressed not just by the physical appearance and moves, but by the voice. Just for fun, I looked well away from the stage a couple of times and just listened. Carlini sounds like Presley. Every note, every cadence, every breath. This was confirmed as I popped his CD in my car during the drive home.

My only complaint? The Boardwalk Showroom is pretty intimate and I thought the sound was well mixed but a touch too loud (in fact, causing he microphone feedback a couple of times). Although Carlini tours the U.S. with a complete backing band (and a ticket price to match), this show is sung live to a backing track but Carlini’s stage presence makes you forget the lack of a band. On the flip side, there isn’t a bad seat in the room. In fact, I sat toward the rear and apprciated that aspect for taking in both the show and his interaction with the crowd.

Obviously, you are going to enjoy this show quite a bit more if you have even a remote interest in Elvis. It is a true tribute show, so don’t expect some guy up doing jokes or magic tricks. This show is Elvis. While there were plenty of couples and guys in the audience, it especially appeared to be a great “girls night out” show as the front row was filled with women doing a little screamng and hollaring.

Thanks, I am indeed feeling better but as a “one man band” (I write this newsletter as well as editing, updating, and maintaining the websites) I fell behind on my schedule. I’m happy to say I’m getting caught up.

Fitzgeralds downtown has an “all you can eat” filet mignon buffet. Don’t waste your time. The quality of the buffet is sub-par, the offerings are meager, and the fillet isn’t that great. While I don’t believe they offer filet mignon, Main St. Station buffet downtown continues to be excellent with almost unlimited variety every night.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

TERRIBLE’S HOTEL CASINO – This hotel which sits on the site of the old Continental Hotel at Paradise and Flamingo (about a mile from the Strip) is worth checking out if you drive to town or rent a car. The casino is very nice with a roomy sports book (for a smaller property) and both the buffet and coffee shop are located upstairs away from the casino noise. Plus, a number of food specials (posted both outside and throughout the casino) are available 24/7 in the coffee shop.

The big news? They are using coinless slots that let you take the paper voucher you receive when you cash out and insert it in another machine for play. My early complaint about coinless slots is that you had to go redeem the voucher every time you switched machines but that is a moot point here. FILM AND PRINT – If it seems like you can’t turn on the TV or check out the movie listings without seeing Las Vegas, you are right. Production companies are flocking here to shoot commercials and launch products, and rarely a week goes by without work on a major motion picture. LOW PAY – Las Vegas placed 82nd out of 125 metropolitan cities in a recent study of which cities are the best places to make and save money. Despite the growth, we ranked low in job quality, education, wealth, household income and housing costs. Despite low unemployment, many blue collar jobs don’t pay the big bucks and professionals can expect to start out at a lower rate of pay than the national average. ART AND ARCHITECTURE – The Smithsonian is sponsoring trips to Las Vegas to explore an oft-ignored side of Las Vegas. ROMP THROUGH DOWNTOWN – The Review-Journal just published an interesting article with photos about the Fremont St. Experience (better known to some as “downtown” or “Glitter Gulch”). XFL and WWF – owner / promoter Vince McMahon seems to have a love affair with Las Vegas. The debut XFL game last Sat. night was broadcast live from Las Vegas, drawing 17% of all viewing households (about twice what they expected and more than the much touted NBA double-header the same day.) In addition, the WWF Feb. 25’th Pay-Per-View “No Way Out” will be broadcast from Las Vegas (4:45 PM Pacific).

The XFL was a big hit in the sports books as well, drawing much more wagering than expected. Las Vegas has embraced the team in a large way, but part of that is our way of lashing back at the NFL and NBA. Despite having a metro area population larger than Indianapolis, Orlando, or New Orleans, the leagues frown at owners even thinking about moving here (or awarding an expansion franchise) because of the legal sports betting.

Whether the XFL turns into a hit nationwide remains to be seen. We will report on the XFL when it brings Las Vegas to the spotlight as it did this last weekend, but not regularly.

FEATURE STORY: David Copperfield

When you are going to see the show of the most famous illusionist
since Houdini, expectations are bound to be high, but I must confess that
David Copperfield lived up to my every hope.

From the moment he appears on stage (from nowhere of course), till he
takes his final bow, the entire audience is on the edge of its seats.

The tour, titled Unknown Dimension is designed to allow the audience
to be involved — so watch out because there’s a good chance you might
be picked like I was!

So what did he do to me? Make me disappear? Levitate me? No, he
changed the colour of my pants.

In the cheekiest trick of the whole show, the man who vanished the
Statue of Liberty, levitated across the Grand Canyon, and walked
through the Great Wall of China, swapped the colour of my underwear
with another girl, in a trick which included his classy joke; Should
I do it the hard way … or the easy way. The hard? OK, I’ll take her
out to dinner first. Great.

You could be lucky though. Two members of the crowd were levitated
whilst sitting on a huge red sofa, others had a tissue changed into a
mouse in their hands. This is nothing though, compared with the
finale acts. One sees him picking thirteen members of the audience at
random, and making them disappear (some of them, apparently appear
miles, away, though I’m not sure if that’s all hype), and in the
other, he transports someone anywhere they want to be.

Tonight, he invites on to the stage a teenage boy, who, we are told,
has always wanted to go to Bali. And, believe it or not (literally),
he takes him there. A video screen appears. We see a beach, the sea,
and cameras and crew. A clock shows the time and Bali live is in
the corner.

Yeah, yeah, you’re thinking. That’s ridiculous. The piece in Bali is
all prerecorded. They went and filmed it. We thought the same.
Until he began throwing silver balls in to the audience, with his back
turned. If you caught one you had to go on the stage. He lines the
people up, and takes a Polaroid of them, which he gets one of them to
date and sign. Next, we gets one of then to think of two random
letters, and write them on his arm.

He puts the Polaroid in the boy’s pocket, and leads him to sit on a
throne-like chair. It is on an arm, which moves off the stage, and
suspends over the audience. He throws a silver sheet over them.
Flash. Bang. They are gone … all eyes move to the video screen. A
similar sheet is held over the sand on the beach. Flash. Bang.
There they are. David shows his arm to the camera … with the same
letters on it … the boy takes the Polaroid out … the same audience
members, and signature.

People around me start to scream Ahhhhh! Its raining!!! Spray
covers the audience. Flash. Bang. Mr. Copperfield stands on the
table in front of us, with a grin on his face, throwing sand from his
pockets. Wow.

For those interested in visiting the Gold Coast, a free shuttle runs from the Barbary Coast on The Strip (departing at the side entrance) to the Gold Coast from 9 AM to Midnight every 15-20 minutes. (This is also a great way to get over to The Rio for free as you don’t have to be a hotel guest or produce any ID.)

I am not aware of any hotel that sets up a separate or expanded area showing all the games, but I don’t pretend to have visited every casino during March Madness. JEOPARDY – Two weeks worth of the popular game show were recently filmed at the Las Vegas Hilton featuring special and celebrity guests. COLLEGE BETTING – The US Senate and House are getting one step closer to ban betting on college sports. The bill is squarely aimed at Nevada, as we are the only state with legal college sports betting. Given the close watch casinos keep on sudden shifts in bets on ANY game (a large amount of money on one side, especially from a small group of people), it keeps checks and balances on possible game fixing. The bill does nothing to address illegal sports betting. FOOD SPECIALS – The Stardust has thrown it’s hat into the late-night breakfast special ring. They serve two eggs, bacon or sausage, breakfast potatoes and dollar pancakes for $4.95 from 11 PM to 7 AM every night but Tuesday. You can substitute ham and eggs or buttermilk biscuits if you wish.

KIDS – We aren’t trying to beat a dead horse, but this topic continues to make news. HOWARD STERN – won his $100,000 bet at the Hard Rock Casino on SuperBowl Sunday evening during the taping of his Monday morning broadcast. E! Entertainment television was also there filming for future episodes of Stern’s TV show. The show was broadcast live on Stern affiliate X107.5 in Las Vegas, creating pandemonium inside and a line of people around the casino trying to get inside and catch part of the action. FIRST FAMILY – Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman may have the reputation as the “Mob Lawyer,” but his wife has long been regarded as a pillar of the community. ARIZONA – Good news for our friends who visit up by car from Arizona and the rest of the Southwest and southern US. The Hoover Dam bypass is moving along, and the government has selected a bypass route that involves a straightening the route and a 4 lane bridge over the Black Canyon 1500 feet downstream from the Dam.

This is a double bonus, cutting about 30 minutes off of the trip for those passing through, and easing the congestion at the dam for those who want to visit the magnificent structure. FEATURE STORY: America Restaurant

My wife & I have been going to Vegas about 3 times a year for the last 4 years and we love to try different kinds of restaurants. On our last visit in November of 2000 we experienced an extraordinary one called America Restaurant. As you can imagine the employees are dressed patriotically, including American flag ties. In the dining area above your heads on the ceiling is an enormous statuesque map of the United States. Highlighting accomplishments, stereotypes, & comical attributes of each state in character or symbolic form such as: Mount Rushmore in South Dakota and Alien & Spaceships in New Mexico. It was quite a site; we were both overwhelmed. It really has to be seen, words don’t explain the intricacy and the grandeur of this awesome sight.

Beyond the fantastic ambiance was the phenomenal service. I’m not an easy customer; I usually inquire quite a bit about how the food is prepared and request modifications to the menu. Each question and adjustment was granted with excellence.

Let’s talk food!
I ordered:
Abondigas soup (soup du jour)
Lemon bake chicken
Baked potato
Salad

I’m not a huge meatball soup lover but it was so delicious I had my wife try it, who doesn’t like abondigas soup at all, after sampling it she didn’t want to give it back. We agreed that the fresh ingredients and especially the broth really went beyond our expectations.

The lemon chicken was quite a feast beyond the 2 huge chicken breast portions it was simply tasty. When I’ve ordered from other restaurants, usually lemon chicken means grilled chicken with lemon sauce or grilled chicken with herbs & lemon on the surface of the chicken breast but I savored the juiciness of herbs & lemon throughout this chicken.

Vegetables & Potato came with the chicken. The vegetables were steamed and fresh. If you like veggies these were great, didn’t even need to doctor them up they stood up on their own. The baked potato was huge; I’m talking stereotypically Idaho huge. I enjoy a baked potato with my meals but haven’t always been satisfied with the restaurants outcome i.e. shriveled like they should have been retired instead of served, russet potato as small as a red potato, have to pick out the dark portions etc. This was not so with America Restaurant’s potato, it was baked to perfection, creamy white inside and to emphasize again, fresh.

Side salad was crisp not a bit watery and not served with just iceberg lettuce. Also they had choices for low-cal dressings, a plus for me.

This restaurant didn’t have any cons — we’re going back and will be recommending it to everyone we know!

Actually, they canceled three weeks of shows due to Roy’s bad case of the flu. The While their alleged sexual orientation has sparked the AIDS rumor, Roy is 61 and it is entirely conceivable he was struggling with the flu. I’m straight, not more more than half his age, and was sidelined almost two weeks during this past month as were many others in town due to the severe flu that swept through.

If I had a dollar for every crazy rumor that circulates among the hotel break rooms that gets passed on to the public, I could have retired long ago. Certainly we wish Roy the best and hope that this is nothing more than a severe case of the flu.

The newsletter is geared to the Las Vegas visitor, and as predicted, it rained here most of last weekend. People come to Las Vegas expecting some of the 310+ days of sun a year, and my point was that if you have to be here when it rains, at least it is SuperBowl weekend and there are plenty of indoor activities (including the game).

I personally did not bet a dime on the game. My friends that avidly bet sports liked the “under” bet, so I reported that. Congratulations on your win, as a series of freak touchdowns pushed the game “over.”

I’m not sure how any of my comments were perceived to be anti-Tampa but rest assured I think that Florida is a wonderful destination. So much so, that I am developing a website which will promote and allow people to book rooms in all parts of Florida.

MGM MIRAGE – has postponed their plans to turn the Holiday Inn Boardwalk into a Generation-X casino. The original idea was to have a high tech hotel-casino to appeal to the newly “dot-com” rich and those who have grown up with new technology. FEATURE STORY: Melinda – The First Lady of Magic

Las Vegas has it all: exploding volcanos and pirate battles right on the street, German guys with white tigers, famous headliner entertainment, and now for the first time in some 5 years, the most-publicized female magician in the world.

I first saw Melinda play downtown at the Lady Luck almost 7 years ago. The room was packed, the price was right, and and it was a nice entertaining mix of basic magic and Vegas “show and dance”. Melinda has spend the past few years in locales ranging from Atlantic City to Branson and recently brought her show back to Las Vegas. She grew up here, and worked as a dancer in Siegfried and Roy along her way to showroom stardum.

Melinda’s 90 minute show is really the tale of two shows. The first part relies and reflects heavily on here older material, much of which she has been doing for years. Unfortunately, it comes off a little too cheesy and fluffy, with the dance numbers almost overshadowing the magic and not letting the crowd get into a dramatic mood needed to thrououghly enjoy the illusions. That is unfortunate because the magic, while standard magic show fare, is well done including levetation, mid-air vanishing, and reappearing in the back of the showroom.

About halfway through the show, we are given a change of pace with a 15 minute performance by 3 Argentinian’s who demonstrate talent and humor with traditional drum playing and bolo ball displays. One of the unfortunate aspects of an early show (this one started at 6:30 PM) is that the crowd isn’t in the late night party mood (i.e. 5 drinks into the night), but they really brought the crowd to life and it was a good warm-up for the bigger illusions.

The second half brought out the showstoppers. A full sized Lamborghini was suspended above stage and a number of audience volenteers were invited on stage to verify that it was a very real car. After the car was draped and reved to “200 miles an hour”, it simply vanished out of thin air. The other truly memorable illusion is her Drill of Death, where a huge drill screws through her body and lifts here high in the air.

Melinda has come a long way, both with her magic and now performing in the beautiful C2K showroom of the Venetian. There truly isn’t a bad seat in the house. If there is one drawback, the show is almost as much Britney Spears as it is spellbinding magic. Melinda could easily pass for the pop singer’s older sister, with her beauty, obvious devotion to fitness and dance, and bubbly personality . Unfortunatly, it is a thread doesn’t completely go away even during the most serious of illusions when we need to be biting our nails.

Overall, it is an enjoyable show combining magic flare with the dance numbers one expects out of a traditional Las Vegas show. Melinda is very personable, quick with wit and laughter, and interacts with the audience very well. The show leaves you with a nice, warm feeling. Although Melinda and her dancers wear some very “body conscious” outfits, the show contains no overt sexuality and is very suitible for children.

Melinda, First Lady of Magic plays every evening but Wednesdays. Show times vary by day of the week, but are in the early evening. Tickets run from $38 – $88, with childrens tickets (under 12) $22. Call ahead to the Venetian at (702) 414-1000 and ask for the box office to confirm times and prices. The show is selling pretty well, so reservations are suggested.

I printed both of the above letters to demonstrate the range of opinions regarding De La Guarda. It is not a typical Las Vegas show in any respect, but more of an experience. As we noted in last week’s review of the show (archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/01-01-17.htm ), “While not sexual in nature, it is primal and stretches your imagination. It is for the young or young at heart and requires an open mind.” Jubilee or Folies Bergere is more in order for someone interested in a typical Las Vegas show.

ART BELL – The infamous late night talk host returns to the airwaves Feb. 5, broadcasting from his remote house in Pahrump, NV (about an hour west of Las Vegas). His show is heard on over 400 stations nationwide (you can’t flip around the AM dial late night without hearing him on 2-3 frequencies) and the show returns to flagship station KDWN 720 AM here in Las Vegas. NOT SMOG – That brown haze that hangs over Las Vegas is dust kicked up from the desert. It isn’t pretty, and we are in EPA violation over it. FEATURE STORY: De La Guarda

de-la-guarda-rio.jpg (12198 bytes) DE LA GUARDA – This new show at The Rio defies all description, but I’m going to try! The show combines elements of carnival, rave, concert and theater. There is no dialogue, no star, and NO SEATS! Instead, the action and performers fly over your head in a loosely choreographed display. Later in the show, the cast actually mingles in the audience encouraging general happy excitement and dancing. Confetti, balloons, and manufactured rain contribute to the controlled and very entertaining chaos.

Most of the show takes place over your head. You walk into a dark theater surrounded in black with a paper ceiling over your head. The paper covers the entire show area, and is backlit to provide a unique landscape that lets the cast and technicians use sight and sound creating a buildup to a show that explodes from the sky.

The free flowing show uses electronic music and live vocal chants to stimulate the ears as a sharp contrast to the primal basics of water, balloons, unusual lighting variety and the human form to pleasure the eyes.

The beauty of the show is that you can make it out to be whatever you want. You can stand at the edge of the action and just take it all in (keeping clean and dry) or you can surge to the center of the crowd and dance in rave fashion soaking in the “rain” and excitement. While not sexual in nature, it is primal and stretches your imagination. It is for the young or young at heart and requires an open mind. If you still enjoy a good rollercoaster ride, you will probably enjoy this show.

De La Guarda plays Tuesday – Saturday at 9:00 PM with an additional Saturday night show at 11:30 PM. Tickets are $45 plus tax and available by calling 702-252-7776 Casual attire is encouraged.

Glad you had a great time. There isn’t anywhere quite like Las Vegas for New Year’s Eve! My continued strong warnings about bringing children to Las Vegas aren’t anti-child or meant to be a blanket statement. It is a warning for first-time visitors under the false impression that this is a family town. While Las Vegas was only marketed as a family destination for a couple of years in the early 90’s, the general media continues to perpetuate the myth.

Many of our readers are gleaning information for their first ever visit and to them I continue to advise coming without the children. After a visit, you can then decide if your children’s ages and interests are conducive to what Las Vegas has to offer, and more importantly, if you are willing to think about the arrangements ahead of time so that both parents have the time to gamble if they wish.

Plans to remodel or implode the Frontier were put on hold a few months ago in light of a softening economy and tighter financing market.

New Year’s Eve is unique in the total closing down of The Strip, and this is the first time in over a decade that there have been fireworks (although talk is strong of making it a yearly tradition). American holidays like July 4’th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, et. al. are just very, very crowded and expensive weekends. While Las Vegas has a number of July 4’th fireworks displays, the only one near The Strip has been at the Stratosphere, and not the overwhelming type of display we had on New Year’s. With the exception of New Year’s, I’d plan your vacation away from the crowded holiday weekends.

HERE WE GO AGAIN – A group of investors has plans on the drawing board to build a 40 story megaresort across the Strip from Mandalay Bay. Virgin Atlantic’s Richard Branson is considering throwing his hat into the project, which is having some problems acquiring the remaining few parcels needed to pull off the project. TAKE THE TRAIN? – A couple of years ago, Amtrak abandoned service to Las Vegas, which (as part of a longer route) only operated three times a week with a 7.5 hour ride between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. However, they have been hard at work to restart daily LA – Vegas service using faster equipment and special stretches of double track allowing the fast passenger trains to pass slower freight service. The money for the new trains and track improvements are available, and the new trains are reported to be plush and have the latest entertainment and amenities.

The delay? The planned 22 mile long passing siding is in the Mojave National Preserve, home to a tortoise that has been listed as a “threatened” species. Although adding another set of rails beside a present rail line would seem to have minimal additional impact, government environmental red tape threatens to delay the project for many months. FEATURE STORY: 01.01.01

The New Year came in with a big bang, literally. A fireworks show called the “Big Bang” simultaneously went off from the roofs of 14 casinos up and down The Strip. Each of the hotels looked like a Roman candle going off with sparks flying everywhere. This was accompanied by loud and constant “concussion bomb” explosions that literally rocked The Strip.

At a time when much of the US was unfortunately freezing, buried in snow, and many without power, New Year’s Eve dawned beautiful and sunny. Temperatures were in the mid-60’s during the day and remained in the mid-40’s leading up to midnight. The crowds were unprecedented, with estimates ranging from 300-350,000, and Metro (Police) reporting by 10 PM that the entire length of the Strip was completely closed to traffic.

There was no shortage of news coverage, both locally and around the world on networks like CNN. We had our brand new Sony Mavica FD-85 digital camera out on The Strip. (My thanks to those readers who recommended it to me a few months ago when I asked for info on a digital that handles low light well.) Despite the throngs of people and general merriment, we managed to get 30 great photos of the fireworks, the crowds, the crazies, the ladies and The Strip on this unique evening. The only sour note? An unnamed hotel executive was quoted lamenting the money spent on a celebration which drew heavily on the 20-something crowd. Generally speaking, casinos prefer to fill the town with a crowd that is a little more established and mature (read: has more disposable income). This is probably one of the same morons who a few years ago questioned the need for hotels to have websites or facilitate booking rooms online. (Las Vegas has always been way behind the online curve, and it didn’t dawn on these guys that parts of the rest of the world are using the internet to find information and buy things 4-5 years ago.)

Note to casino executives: Credit card companies advertise all over college campuses, trying to get their cards into the hands of those with no money. Why? Because someday those students will be making the big bucks, and still using that card. Vegas “ain’t no different.” These 20-somethings had a great time, went home and each told 20 friends how cool Vegas is, and will be back year after year with more and more money to enjoy themselves with. As noted last newsletter, I suggested people get down there before 6 PM as the side streets fill up and hotels start to only allow guests to park in the garages.

Blue Man is on the short list. I have been meaning to review it for quite some time as its popularity is soaring. I have their CD and have been addicted to the unique pulsing rhythmical music. You hit the nail on the head about the kids. I was SHOCKED at how many strollers and mothers holding babies I saw this New Year’s Eve. These people paid a premium for rooms, airfare (or fought traffic heavy traffic flowing in for the weekend), and were exposing their kids to noisy fireworks and 1/3 million tipsy revealers. My advice to parents? Do the family vacation with Walt Disney. Come to Vegas sans the kids for fun and romance.

They want to waste a couple of hours of your valuable time to pitch you on a time-share. When you add up what your time is worth here (airfare, hotel, etc.) you are better off avoiding the hassle. They best way to avoid them is to tell them you are leaving tonight, or split up with your significant other until you get past them (they generally don’t pitch single people).

The signs that have been refurbished and are operating are at the East end of the Fremont St. Experience downtown (by Race Rock, etc.) There is a yard in another part of town where a bunch are stored awaiting restoration (or just collecting dust — nothing rusts in the desert), but to my knowledge it is not open to the public.
