Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – And a very Happy New Year as we welcome in 2012. 2011 was a turnaround year for Las Vegas tourism. We got The Plaza back, the new Tropicana, and Cosmo completed their first full year. We did lose The Sahara but their owner is swearing up and down that they are getting ready to remodel it.

We fell just short of the all-time visitor volume record of 39.2 million (hitting an even 39 million). We’ll have no problem busting through that this coming year barring anything completely crazy happening.

New Years Eve saw 314,000 people flock to town. Room occupancy hit 98% despite the fact that obnoxiously high rates were the norm. The recovering economy and New Years Eve falling on a Saturday night sure didn’t hurt. Neither did the stretch of warm weather we’ve been happening. Temps at midnight were in the low 40’s with no wind but if you’re in the middle of the crowds, it feels much warmer. This past week saw unusually warm temps near the 70’s.

Blink And You’ll Miss It – Regular readers know that I mock the New York City celebration every year (when compared to ours). I was actually at home under the weather this year (I’ll live… Las Vegas happens 365 days per years) which provided me the opportunity to view the New York City ball drop. Almost. At 9 PM our time, I was switching back and forth between Fox News (ball drop), CNN (ball drop), and ESPN (which was hosting a daredevil jump by a couple of Evel Knievel wannabes). I flipped over to ESPN just for a few seconds to watch the wind-up to the jump and literally missed the ball drop.

So let me get this straight: People come from all over the world to Times Square many, many hours early so they can be put in pens (like cattle) to view a 60 second ball drop. Are you kidding me?!? You wanna talk about a cure for insomnia…

By the way, New York claims that over a million people attend the ball drop. Guess what: Reports I read note that only 17 blocks around Times Square are shut down for the event. Which makes that million number a blatant lie. You simply can’t fit a million people into 17 closed off blocks.

Side Note: Every year I hear from a few unhappy New Yorkers about all of this. Hey, if you want to explain he logistics of getting a million people into 17 blocks worth of street space, I’m all ears. I know what the 250,000 on The Strip look like and they pretty much fill up 3 miles of boulevard.

I digress…

Fortunately, at 10 PM our time, both KLAS and KSNV kicked in to their extensive local coverage. If you read my blog post (last issue) about New Years Eve tips or followed us on Twitter that night, you knew that KLAS actually streamed the entire coverage and both stations put on a network quality show.

I’m in utter shock why the LVCVA (Visitors Authority) here doesn’t partner with one of them and a cable network and broadcast our celebration to the nation. Sure, the time difference would be a factor (we’re three hours behind the East Coast, two hours behind Central Time), but you’d still have a fair amount of people curious enough to watch in many parts of the country.

Don’t take my word for it. Check out the entire 9 minute video at New YearÆs Fireworks Over Las Vegas Strip û Complete Video

Lion King Record – Looks like many of you took our advice to see The Lion King before it closed here in Las Vegas. The show grossed $1,369,460 in the final week at Mandalay Bay, a theatre record. (It didn’t hurt that Las Vegas is getting more busy than ever and the week between Christmas and New Years is a heavy family week here). We want to thank all of you who went to see The Lion King during their run. They were a long-time sponsor and when you support the sponsors we list in this newsletter, you help us keep our lights on and Nevadan’s employed! Speaking of…

Membership Update – We’ve received numerous questions from readers wondering when we are going to our membership model ($23.95 per year). Probably in another 6 weeks or so. We want to make sure it works correctly and has no glitches or problems. Something we’ve decided to do is offering a money-back guarantee. At the end of your first year, if you don’t think the information we provide (plus some of the expanded Las Vegas savings info and features we’ll be able to start providing members with the new revenue) was worth it, we’ll issue a full refund.

Tale Of Two Cities – We’ll hear from a reader who said they visited and Las Vegas was somewhat dead, then hear from one who visited a week later and marveled at how busy it was. Here’s what most people forget: Las Vegas is a very different place depending on time of year, day of the week, and even time of day!

If you usually visit on the weekdays, the weekend Las Vegas will be a bit foreign to you (more crowds, harder partying). If you are a daytime person who is in bed by midnight here, you’d be amazed at how vastly different things are a 1 PM as opposed to 1 AM. Fremont Street can be especially varied as daytimes feature an older crowd who are there to gamble. But once the sun goes down and the free entertainment starts, the party crowd takes over. Especially the nice weather months (March – October).

Why The Hilton Name Change – Both the Atlantic City and Las Vegas Hilton hotels have had to cease using the Hilton name. Evidently, their franchise agreements were not renewed by the Hilton Corporation for reasons that weren’t disclosed. An article in the November issue of Travel and Leisure magazine seemed to point out the reason why: Hilton is working to reinvent the brand with hundreds of new hotels (many of a more boutique nature) and shedding the stodgy image that a property like the Las Vegas Hilton carries.

Don’t Text In Your Car Here – Nevada has joined the list of states not allowing texting while driving. If you get ticketed, you’re out $50 (plus I assume court costs which can run into the hundreds). Hands-free devices are allowed. I don’t even touch my phone when driving in the resort corridor. It takes enough work to watch for other drivers who are sight-seeing and pedestrians who don’t understand “Don’t Walk” signs (like they have to hurry to the next hotel before it closes or something).

No Skyline Change For Now – The condemned (and never opened) Harmon tower — next to Cosmopolitan — won’t be coming down in the near future. The demolition hearing isn’t until March. It will take all that time to get the finger-pointing taken care of, have a judge decide who is at fault, and decide if it really isn’t fixable.

Super Bowl – Right around this time of year, we start to get the “What is happening for Super Bowl?” questions. Information on various events has already started coming in and we’ll list it starting next week. However, don’t hold your breath on info for the hotel parties. For some crazy reason, they get us that info about three days before kickoff which leaves us no time to include it here (although we will get it on Twitter this year). Don’t forget, you can catch the breaking news and deals that don’t make deadline here by joining the nearly 13,000 people that follow us at http://twitter.com/AccessVegas

Welcome Absinthe – We’d like to welcome a new sponsor to AccessVegas.com and this newsletter: Absinthe! I honestly can’t remember a show that has opened here to as much acclaim and buzz. The show is simply out-of-control and performed just feet away from the audience. Imagine a Cirque show run by a wealthy, smarmy, profane sideshow barker (The Gazillionaire) and then let your imagination run wild. This show is on the profane side at times, so avoid if you have sensitive ears.

Right now, they are offering $20 off if you book at this special link: Absinthe Las Vegas $20 Off Tickets

Hi, we have been going to Las Vegas for over 35 years.

This year, we wanted to go to Las Vegas from Jan 15 to Jan 22, 2012. We were looking at going to see Celine Dion.

We booked the flight, then the Vdara. We later learned the Vdara wanted to charge a resort fee. We are not aware of ever paying any resort fees previously and in many situations we were provided with many extra benefits and sometimes free rooms.

The travel Agent called the Vdara to see if they would waive the resort fee as my wife and I do not make use of any of the facilities and never have with any of the hotels we have stayed in Las Vegas.

They would not waive the fees. Therefore, I canceled the trip and am booking Hawaii. I will not pay for something I do not use or do not believe is fair.

Just thought I would let you know as I have been reading your material for many years and you have helped me out in the past.

Regards,

Norm

Ted Responds:

The following properties do not charge resort fees at last check:

Bally’s, Bills, Caesars, Cosmo, Harrah’s, Flaminigo, Manderin, Paris, IP, Planet Hollywood, and most major downtown hotels.

This isn’t a Vegas issue. Quite a few (upwards of 30, too many to list) Hawaii resorts also charge resort fees. Some to the tune of $25-30 per night. Hopefully, you’ll end up at one that does not, but you might want to check.

I’m no fan of resort fees, but they are becoming par-for-the-course. Your best way to fight back is to only patronize properties which don’t impose them. As you are passionate about this issue, you may also wish to contact your Senator or House Member and ask them to look into whether these fees are misleading or not.

PS Hey, you read our newsletter. I’m sure you know more about Vegas than your travel agent does. Consider booking at AccessVegas.com instead. We have the best places and rock bottom rates in conjunction with our hotel partners!

Follow Up: Norm just emailed me to let me know they were changing their plans and will indeed be vacationing in Las Vegas!

Regarding the possibility of putting strip clubs in casinos, you said “Let’s keep the strip clubs over in the industrial area behind the hotels where they belong.”

Here’s my idea; Let’s put the ultra clubs over in the industrial area behind the hotels where they belong!!!

I (and a lot of other Vegas visitors I know) are sick of the way the casinos are focusing on the drunken, obnoxious, rude, rowdy, 20 something douche bags who take over the casinos either at night, or by day at the pools. Don’t the casinos want us gamblers anymore???

No comps, no drink service, no decent payouts, no respect!!! Vegas was built by us but we have been forgotten by the corporations who now run their little casino monopolies.

I would much rather have a strip club which only attracts men who will come and go without much notice, than an ultra club that is completely the opposite!

Thanks for letting me rant!!! love your newsletter!

Ted Responds:

No question that this issue has been coming to a head. When Steve Wynn spent nearly $70 million to build the Encore Beach Club, the complaints about “douchebags” and Jersey Shore (the reality show) types overrunning the property has become a serious issue among those who are there for the upscale gambling experience. One wonders if it played (even a little bit) into the decision to close the five star, five diamond Alex French restaurant at Wynn. The clubbers spend all day at the pool, nap in the evening, spend all night in the clubs, then nap in the morning. They aren’t sitting down to a 2 hour, $200 meal.

The clubbers and pool party goers are extremely lucrative. They pay steep admission fees, drink lots of $14ádrinks (with 30 cents worth of booze in it), and pay many hundreds/thousands of dollars for “bottle service” (where a $30 retail bottle of liquor is purchased for $400 and way up to insure that the guests get a private table). However, is it so lucrative that the properties don’t mind scaring off good gamblers? That seems to still be in question.

Cosmopolitan is proving an interesting study. They opened wanting to attract (in their words) the “curious class”. And to a point they have. Guests love their mixology bars, restaurants, and the club Marquee is a huge hit. The problem? This “curious class” isn’t at all curious about gambling! Which is having a significant impact on their bottom line. So much so, that they just hired an experienced Las Vegas hotel executive away from another property to help turn that situation around.

At the end of the day, you have to vote with your feet and play elsewhere. Which I know can be a very difficult concept if you are a comped gambler somewhere. They know you. They send you all those great offers. Other casinos may not.

My advice for people in those shoes? On your next trip, do half of your gambling at your usual place and do half of it at a “douche free” property that you enjoy (obviously using a players card so your play is tracked). Your normal property is unlikely to decrease your offers based on less play for just one trip, and you may be surprised at the offers you start to get from the new property you tried out.

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 2 — Multiple Poker Tournaments – with Victor H. Royer. Multitable tournaments generally mirror precisely the kind of tournaments with which you may be familiar in the real-world brick-and-mortar type casino and poker rooms and card rooms that feature and offer them. Such multitable tournaments usually take the form and structure of the well-known WPT and WSOP tournaments, and consequently they are easily understood by anyone who has already played in a land-based poker tournament. For those who are familiar only with the Internet, playing multitable poker tournaments is very easy. The word “multitable” clearly indicates that this is a tournament that will be played on several tables, and that therefore there will be many participants. Click to Read Complete Article

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Where did January go? I think most of us are glad to see it go. Way too cold! Things look good for a stunning Super Bowl weekend here in Las Vegas. Temperatures brushing 70 F are going to make it an amazing guys weekend for hitting the links and watching the game. Where to watch it? Anywhere and everywhere. Every TV (including many brought in just for the game) will be tuned to it in every corner of every casinos.

If you can get here, we might still have some rooms and tee-times open. Call us (toll free) 800-696-5721 and see if we can still hook you up. Short of actually having a ticket to the game in Miami (big game tickets still available here as of press time), being in Vegas for Super Bowl weekend is the next best thing!

Stardust Implosion – Local gossip writer Norm Clarke is suggesting a March 12, 2 AM implosion of The Stardust. However, no date is yet set in stone and likely not to be noted until the week of the implosion. If you were already thinking about coming for a few days in March, take the gamble and book that week and keep your fingers crossed. But don’t book based only on this early rumor. We will let you know the minute we know (provided it is more than a couple of days in advance), so please… no more “when is the implosion” emails!

Send A Postcard To Spread Cheer – Many of you send postcards from Las Vegas (and many of you enjoy sending our online postcards). Here is a chance to send one for a good cause: 8 year old Luci LaMonica of Las Vegas is fighting leukemia. She is an honor student who loves to study and her new favorite subject is geography. A recent local TV news story encouraged all Las Vegans vacationing in other cities to send her a card from that city. I’d like to take it one step further:

We have readers all over the world, and wouldn’t it be fun if she received postcards from the many wonderful cities and towns, big and small that you are reading us from! Just tell her where your city is, tell her hello, and that you hope she feels better. For a few cents and a minute of your time, you can really brighten up her day. More info on her and the address to send the cards is available at: Postcards giving hope to local girl

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Overview – with Victor H. Royer. Most of the poker tournaments that you will play either on the WPT or WSOP circuits will be Texas Hold’Em no limit tournaments, and very few — if any — of the remaining land-based brick-and-mortar casino or poker room type tournaments will offer any of the other games, such as Seven Card Stud, Stud/8, Omaha High, Omaha/8, as well as some of the other interesting poker games. But you can play games like this, and tournaments featuring these games, on the Internet, and I have chosen PartyPoker.com has an example because that’s where you can find so many players participating in these tournaments that makes it worthwhile, definitely from the prize money perspective. Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Hello there,

We may need some help booking an upcoming anniversary trip in March. Should we just follow your advice in the newsletter? We’ve never been before but are very excited about it! At least two other couples are going.

Thanks for any advice,

Lorie Schultz

Ted Responds:

With so much to do and see in Las Vegas, don’t over-plan. You won’t be bored for a minute.

However, if you want to see a concert that will happen while you are in town, or one of the more popular shows, you’ll want to take care of those arrangements ahead of time. You can keep your eyes on our newsletter to see what is coming up in the next few months.

Important Note: Some shows don’t put tickets on sale more than three months in advance. (On the other hand, some like Celine are available right now through the end of her run in December). If you want to see a show and don’t yet see tickets for your future dates on sale yet, check back every couple of weeks, and especially check once you get inside that three month window. Then grab them!

Note: This was sent to us on New Year’s Day, 2007 from a visitor who was here in town. If you have your laptop or access to the internet while visiting, drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com and let us know how things are going!Dear Ted,From the lobby of the Luxor, we would like to wish you, your family and colleagues a very happy New Year. We are having a whale of a time in LV, having seen in 2007 on The Strip last night. Everyone was so well behaved and we had had a super meal in the Italian restaurant in New York New York. We were so impressed with the good behaviour of the crowd with the inconspicuous police presence, although very much in the background having made a vast amount of preparation for a successful night. We had a very relaxing coffee in The Wynn yesterday morning and today we’re off to the Stratosphere. Thank you for all your advice and we can only very highly recommend, thanks to your advice, The Maverick Helicopter tour over and into The Grand Canyon. The pilot, Paul, was superb at keeping us novices at our ease. It was a wonderful experience. Las Vegas is wonderful; we are taking back such wonderful memories plus plenty of snaps.

Thanks,

Pam and Mike French

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Super Bowl weekend was huge, with about 285,000 people in town, and it seems like everybody had a bet on the game. I have little interest in either team and simply bet for fun. In Nevada, we call it a “TV bet” when you bet on a game just to have some rooting interest. I lost my bet (Seattle to win +165 … that means I picked Seattle to win and would have been paid $165 for every $100 I bet … getting a bonus for taking the underdog) but had fun watching the game.

Valentines Day is almost here. Guys … if you are like me, you forget about it until the last minute. Well … now it’s the last minute and if you want to bring that special lady to Las Vegas, don’t delay. Rooms are going very, very, very fast. I would do the following:

1. Visit our friends at Las Vegas Hotel Deals and lock up that room immediately.

2. She’ll forgive that you flew in coach on some discount airline (and almost forgot about Valentines) if you treat her with a limo ride from the airport. So book your Las Vegas Limo Reservation now. And if you can’t get the mid-week off to take her, make her day special with a card that says “We are going to Vegas soon!”

Carrot Top Review: I Can’t Believe I
Watched the Whole Show, and I Liked It!

By Phil Arnold
December 2005

Carrot Top las vegas hotels hiltonHow long has Carrot Top been around and how famous is he? I don’t have a clue about the answer to those questions, and his web site certainly didn’t help me find out information. Carrot Top may be a publicity hound, but what does that have to do with his show? Nothing I guess. I enjoyed watching this show and I was surprised.

Carrot Top does annoying commercials, kind of looks like the Wendy’s girl as he brings up in his show, but he is a unique type of comic. He is what I call a prop comic. I have seen this before in Las Vegas with a comic by the name of Joe Trammel. But Carrot Top is much more accomplished and has about four trunks of props he goes through during a show, maybe more. Each night the explosive show transforms a dramatic waterfall in front of The Mirage into a spectacular, flame-throwing volcano with molten streams of lava. More than 3,000 computerized lights create this nightly optical illusion. The nightly show is free to the public.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Highs this next week will be in the 60’s (F) and the cold and snow in much of the US doesn’t look like it is letting up soon. Can’t say I’d trade places with those of you snow and icebound, but this is a great time to get away to Las Vegas and warm up.

Our pick for the best Super Bowl party this Sunday? AladdinÆs Big Game Party features gorgeous Hawaiian Tropic models, a chance to win $100,000, giveaways … oh, the game on huge screens.

Valentine’s Day – is right around the corner. Easy for us guys to forget (hey, Super Bowl is on tap, NASCAR is starting … ) and if you didn’t measure up last year, take her to Vegas this year and all will be forgiven. Plus, it falls on a Saturday so the odds are you have the day off.

Rooms aren’t going to be cheap on short notice, so use our expert advice that we give for New Year’s Eve bookings to nail that Valentines room in Vegas. She’ll be the envy of her friends (and you get to go to Vegas)!

Best Kept Secret – Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is among the best kept secrets in Las Vegas … and it is free! Home to a flock of live Chilean Flamingos, African penguins, swans, ducks, Koi, and turtles populating the grounds, this is a favorite of ours to unwind or take someone for a romantic walk. The carefully tended gardens, tropical plants, and waterfalls are amazing.

You can find the habitat at the Flamingo Las Vegas by heading back in the direction of the buffet. As noted, this is free and open to the public. Not visiting soon (or want a sneak peek before you get here)? Click to view our Flamingo Wildlife Habitat photos!

Roy Horn Update – Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn is progressing very well, according to Las Vegas gossip columnist Norm. Click to read the details

Speaking of … word is that Siegfried and Roy will be replaced with a Cirque Du Soleil show. That combined with the Cirque style show Celine Dion – A New Day and a Cirque style show scheduled for Wynn Las Vegas, and the one soon to come online at the MGM Grand will bring this unique show style to seven different venues.

Will supply outstrip demand? Probably not as these unique, high-end productions are sensory delights that make a lifetime impression. If you get a chance to see Cirque du Soleil shows O, Mystere, or Zumanity, grab it. Tickets are constantly in high demand.

NASCAR Weekend – Las Vegas NASCAR Nextel and Busch ticket packages including great seats and first-class hotels, plus our insider transportation tips to get you to the speedway quickly! Check out the growing list of Las Vegas Super Bowl Parties.

Martin Nievera – Word is out that this Philippine-born entertainer is singing up a storm downtown at the Golden Nugget. We had to miss the press preview(I had the flu) but look forward to seeing him soon. In the meantime, don’t pass up this talented entertainer bringing back a taste of “old Vegas” with a new touch. Lawry’s The Prime Rib is at first glance an elegant, simple and well known eating establishment. Located on Las Vegas’ famed “restaurant row” just a mile from The Strip, Lawry’s dramatic Art Deco design, rich woods and vibrant colors welcome you into a setting that has an extraordinary feeling of warmth and elegance.

The dÚcor is tasteful but doesn’t scream snobbery. The staff is very well trained and many have been with the company for decades. Their helpful nature and hospitable attitude defines the culture that is Lawry’s.

Let’s talk about the food. Wow! Bring your appetite. Good size proportions, and the entire menu from salads to entrees, and (of course) deserts are excellent.

Featured Review: Sixtiesmania Rocks The Castaways

By David Berman
dberman@concentric.net

Every decade can be characterized by the music of the era, music that we often feel nostalgia for because of the events in our lives at the times specific tunes were popular. And few decades were as rich as the 1960s. You could start and end with The Beatles, of course, and that would almost be enough to make the æ60s unforgettable.

But there were many others who burst upon the scene to enrich the lives of those who lived through the decade, including The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, and so many others whose “greatest hits” still resonate today.

A group called Sixtiesmania, currently performing in The CastawaysÆ Windjammer Lounge, exploits and celebrates the music of the æ60s in a way that is building audiences so fast that many nights are standing-room only.

Sixtiesmania is not just a band; it is a SHOWBAND presenting a two-and-a-half-hour review that spans the decade through the use of multimedia, dancing, many costume changes, near-perfect impressions of legendary performers, and excellent musicianship which does not rely on lip-synching or recorded soundtracks. Hello from Las Vegas! We’ve continued to have beautiful days around 70 (F) but I won’t rub it in. (Our) spring is a great time to be in Las Vegas.

Missing Newsletters? – We are aware that some of you aren’t getting all of our newsletters. We are stuck with a problem. Words like (read backwards) ONISAC, Las Vegas PIRTS, GNILBMAG, and other words related to our fine city are also words that many spam filters stop.

Solutions: If you use use your internet service’s email filter, you can turn it down a notch. If you use a free email with an automatic filter, you can subscribe under your regular email address.

A more simple solution might be to use our own Vegas Mail free email. It won’t block our newsletter, and it will send your regular email a note (if you wish) letting you know when you have mail on your Vegas Mail account. Plus, spammers don’t seem to bug us. They go after the big email systems, nor ours. I use Vegas Mail as my main personal (non-business) email address and love it!

Your tipping guide was incredibly helpful on our recent trip to Vegas. We were prepared to tip the front desk clerk, but we were satisfied with the room we received. We did tip the maitre d’ at a show with general admission seating (and a full house) and got a great seat. (We didn’t see anyone else tipping, and they all were shuttled to the outer tables.) Your advice on tipping the maid daily is something we will do in every city from now on.

Glad we could help! We invite everybody to enjoy our Tipping Guide which also has links to many other Frequently Asked Questions about Las Vegas.

Hi everyone, I have a quick question, I am going to Vegas in February and was wondering if anyone has every used the $20.00 trick at Circus Circus or Fitzgerald’s and if so how do I go about it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is my second time to Vegas and I will be there for five days this time and just want a bigger room for my duration.

The $20 Trick she refers to is a way to tip the desk clerk for the possibility of a better room, room with a view, etc. Details are available at our Tipping Guide. Have you tried the $20 room tip? Did it work or fail? What kind of upgrade did you get? Let us know in our Travel Questions/Trip Suggestions forums!

My boyfriend and I are visiting Vegas this September. It’s a holiday of a lifetime for us and I doubt we’d ever do it again as we are from England and its quite an expensive holiday (sorry vacation I forgot!). We intend to make this one a BIG one! We are saving our money up (staying for 2 weeks!!!) and want to try and plan our stay. We want to do all the best things and go to the best places.

Obviously I don’t expect anyone to plan our entire trip, but we don’t want to travel all that way and then miss things we should have done. We went to Florida in year 2000 and this happened. There is nothing worse than coming home and meeting someone who has been there and they say ‘didn’t you go to this place or that place???’.

“UKali” is smart to plan ahead. Las Vegas has so much to do and see and most know that overwhelming feeling of “did we do and see the interesting things”? Help her out by letting her know what attractions you feel are a “must see” or which you would never go back to on our Travel Questions/Trip Suggestions.

I always rent a car. I find the rates cheaper than taking a cab. Just having the freedom to go where and when you want is worth the effort, rather than confining yourself to a small area, and then having to rely on expensive cabs just go a few miles. It is very easy to get around Las Vegas if you get to know the roads that run parallel to the strip. Just stay off the strip while driving.

We’ve already had great input on our Getting Around Town > Renting a Car forum, including experiences with various rental car companies. If you have rented a car in Las Vegas, help share your experiences. If you are looking to rent a car on your next trip, check out our Low Rate Rental Car Search and check out the board for more advice.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It is great to be back in the saddle after taking a month off from publication. I survived New Year’s Eve and a move. Most people move away from The Strip to avoid the traffic, commotion, and have a “normal” life. I moved closer so we can increase our great coverage of Las Vegas tourism.

Cold Enough? – Every summer, people say “I don’t see how anybody can live in Las Vegas … this heat is crazy.” I dunno … been near 70 here since the first of the year and most of the rest of the U.S. weather map looks bone chilling. I’d suggest a quick trip to Las Vegas to thaw out. Doesn’t wearing shorts sound more fun than layering clothes!

Write Down This Number! – A great new service for readers: Many within driving distance jump in the car for a “road trip” to Vegas, not giving any thought to which hotel, or just calling the usual one and taking whatever they have. Others plan a trip to town, but haven’t booked any shows, tours, or golf before arrival.

You can go hotel to hotel looking for a room, or hunt down a show and tour booth (without really knowing who you are dealing with). Or … you can use our new telephone reservations service!

Get on your cell or room phone and call (toll free) 800-696-5721 to book all hotels, shows, tours, golf, and even dining reservations! One number does it all to save you time. Plus, you can compare rates without even getting out of the car or calling multiple hotels. Print this out now and stuff a copy in your suitcase or glove box, and another in your pocket or purse!

Special Notes: This number is only for new reservations. To change or confirm existing reservations, use the contact information given to you when you reserved. Special internet rates offered in newsletter not available on the phone.

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Super Bowl Weekend – is always huge. Most hotels have one (or more) parties where a set fee buys you admission, food, and (sometimes) booze but co’mon … this is Las Vegas. Every TV in public view at every bar, lounge, sports book, and anywhere else in the resort and tourism areas will be tuned to the game. You can’t escape it!

The Raiders are a 3.5 point favorite as I write (if you bet the Raiders, they must win by 3.5 points or more, or Buc’s bettors win instead) and there is no excitement like having a nice bet on a big game and getting that start-to-finish thrill. Room availability is still good for this weekend: Check the rates! Remember that many hotels don’t allow Saturday night arrival and the game isn’t until Sunday evening so book an extra night and call in sick so you can get home Monday.

Megabucks – is topping $28,000,000 as I write. That is a lot of zeros behind a dollar sign! You can watch the numbers rise at the IGT Megabucks site and fantasize. Be interesting to see if it hits this Super Bowl weekend.

Green Valley Ranch – earned their first AAA Four Diamond award, joining The Venetian, Mirage, Treasure Island, Golden Nugget, and Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas. Of note is that Green Valley Ranch is the first “local’s” casino to earn the honor. The property feels like an upscale local’s casino to visitors just going to eat, drink, gamble, etc. but to guests it is a boutique resort in the hills with a great view of the entire Las Vegas Valley and The Strip.

Clang, Clang, Clang Is Done, Done, Done – MGM Mirage is the latest gaming company to make the move to “ticket in, ticket” out machines (as opposed to the old ones that pay out actual coins). How do you feel? Do you like the “no muss, no fuss” or is part of the thrill of winning hearing the coins hit the tray? Read the full story and give us your opinion on our Slots Message Board.

Palms Unveils Bachelor Party Suites – These two suites are the ultimate playrooms for bad boys and specifically designed for private bachelor (or bachelorette) parties. These bachelor suites are located on the 28th floor of the Palms Casino Resort, adjacent to the Real World Suite. Click for full story/details.

Cirque Replacing EFX (Details) – With the long running EFX at MGM Grand gone, the hotel is scheduled to open a new Cirque du Soleil production in 2004 that will shake the spectator’s perception of space, conception of the law of gravity and comprehension of the world in three dimensions. Click for full story.

Subscription “Dues” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. Featured Review: New Year’s Eve Review and Photos

Oh what a night! New Year’s Eve never fails to be a wild ride here in Las Vegas. With the entire Las Vegas Strip closed down, it turned into a massive pedestrian mall for the midnight fireworks.I was fortunate to attend with a couple of first-timers. They couldn’t get over what an amazing celebration it was. Ironically, this was one of the most tame I had experienced, partly due to January 1 falling on a midweek (many visitors needing to check out and leave the next morning).

Tame didn’t mean lame, though. An estimated 250,000+ were relishing in this unique experience, walking right down the middle of one of the world’s most famous streets, drink in hand, smiles on every face.

Something cool comes over people when they visit Las Vegas. You can see it and sense it, and the New Year’s revelers were definitely feeling it. You put 1/4 million people together and add booze in almost any other situation or city and you are asking for trouble. But police reported few problems and a very low arrest rate. The Vegas vibe kicks in and people just want to have fun!

On another note, Las Vegas is finally earning the “sin city” reputation and catching up with New Orleans, Key West, and other places where women trade a “look at these” for beads.

As always, we were in the heart of the action filming. You can click on any of the photos on the right, or view our specific photo categories below.

As usual, no fee or registration. View them and use our “Send As Postcard” feature to share with friends!

Streaming video and fireworks photos coming in a few weeks.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas and travel from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Thanks to those of you who noticed I was missing the past few weeks. It’s been crazy, and I have a couple of VERY exciting things to tell you about.

First, we’ve launched All Vegas TV! Now you can go to http://tv.accessvegas.com and SEE Las Vegas anywhere in the world you can get online. Our February 2002 show features Guggenheim — Art of the Motorcycle (at The Venetian), a Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour video, and the uncut version of Las Vegas New Year’s Eve 2001 fireworks show. Future episodes include a Wolfgang Puck interview, a wedding chapel feature (with a big giveaway … stay tuned for that one), and much more. Enjoy!

New Year’s Eve was incredible! 265,000 people packed the Strip to watch $500,000 worth of fireworks like up the sky non-stop for a full seven minutes. The fireworks were shot off from all four miles of the Strip, so there wasn’t a bad view anywhere! With all due respect to New York City for what they have been through, let’s do a little comparison:

Weather at midnight:

New York City: 24 degrees
Las Vegas: 42 degrees

Waiting factor:

New York City: Reports of people arriving 18 hours early to get a decent spot.
Las Vegas: I parked my car on the street 2 blocks from the Strip at 6 PM. (No … I’m not giving that spot away, LOL). Not one of the 265,000 people had a bad spot for fireworks viewing.

Party Factor:

New York City: Zero alcohol tolerance
Las Vegas: They were selling half gallon buckets (I kid you not) of beer right on the street. As long as it was in plastic, drink up!

Don’t take my word for the above — go view our New Year’s Eve bonus footage at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/attractions/index.htm#nye-2001 (not part of this month’s regular program). We’ll see you next year here in Las Vegas!

Valentine’s Day falls on a Thursday this year. If you are looking to whisk that special lady away to Las Vegas for the weekend, I’d book ASAP as hotels are filling up quickly. Check our rates at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm — our hotel partners buy rooms in bulk, in advance and thus can usually offer a better deal than contacting the hotel directly.

Congratulations to Rick Thomas on receiving the Academy of Magical Arts “Magician of the Year” award. Rick’s afternoon show at the Tropicana is value-priced but well worth seeing. My review and ticket info at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/rick-thomas-magic-las-vegas-shows.htm

“Vegas Showgirls: Nearly Famous” is the new series on E! Entertainment Television (cable network) which follows four showgirls and two males through their daily lives both on and off the stage. Airing Monday night, check local listings for time.

We saw the new show Tease playing at Blue Note Showroom (Aladdin) and it was a lot of fun. It’s a very sexy musical comedy centered on the lives of dancers and other employees at a fictional strip club. There is enough jiggle for the guys (the show is just shy of topless — pasties are used), enough hunky actors for the ladies, and comedy that both will enjoy. Check ticket availability and prices at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=5&showid=334 Well worth seeing!

Driving here from both Southern California and Phoenix is going to get easier over the next couple of years! Interstate 15 is being widened to 3 lanes (each way) all the way to the NV / CA border, and Nevada is working with California to expedite lane expansion on other parts of the route.

Those coming from Phoenix can celebrate: Right now, much of the drive is two lane road plus the long, winding path over Hoover Dam. Over the next two years, 50 miles of US 93 is being widened to 5 lanes, and straightened to accommodate a 65 mile per hour speed. 2005 will see the completion of the Hoover Dam bypass, a 4 lane road and bridge over the Colorado south of the dam.

Citizens Area Transit (CAT) Las Vegas bus system is offering service to from the Las Vegas Strip to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for NASCAR races this year. Full details at http://www.rtc.co.clark.nv.us/cat/special/racepass-2.htm (Yes, the info is current — in the first paragraph, they mistakenly noted the dates from last year).

The cab drivers are still screwing you over. Despite a court order not to divert you (hard sell you a destination other than your own, or take you the “long way”), they keep doing it. Why my beef with the cabbies? Twice (out of 4 rides in the resort corridor) in the past two years I have personally been taken a longer way when traffic and the time of day didn’t warrant it. Not even close.

Review-Journal “Road Warrior” Michael Squires did a recent undercover story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2002/Jan-20-Sun-2002/news/17906018.html As usual, my advice is to rent a car. The price of a few cab rides (especially ones that take the “long way”) will easily cover your rental, and you can go where you want on a whim.

Las Vegas is a hotbed of magic, and prominent local magicians Denny Haney and the husband/wife team Scott and Jenny Alexander have opened Denny and Lee Magic studios. Visit them in Las Vegas at 5115 S. Industrial #104 or online at http://www.dennymagic.com

A quick tip of the hat to an acquaintance of mine, Larry Ahrens. Much of New Mexico has woken up to him on top-rated KKOB 770 AM for two decades, and he’s tossing his hat into the ring for governor. More info at http://www.votelarry.com

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HITCHED ON VALENTINE’S DAY – As usual, Las Vegas was a very hot destination for Valentine’s Day. Couples pulled up in pickup trucks, 18 Wheelers, and limos. Some were planned, some were spur-of-the-moment. Philadelphia Inquirer staff writer Nita Lelyveld chronicled some of the more interesting ones at http://inq.philly.com/content/inquirer/2001/02/15/national/WED15.htm

VOTE FOR THE BEST – The Review-Journal is accepting votes in their online Best of Las Vegas 2001 poll at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/bestoflv/2001 Tens of thousands read these online results throughout the course of the year, and they let you vote for the worst as well as the best.

LATIN DANCE – clubs and nights have been all the rage the past couple of years, and Las Vegas has been no exception with Club Rio and Rumjumgle leading the way. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-20-Tue-2001/living/15420979.html

BAD INTERSECTIONS – Once again this year, the worst intersections for traffic wrecks are on The Strip. Tropicana and LV Blvd. (The Strip) was the worst, with Flamingo and LV Blvd. coming in second. The scenery is distracting, but keeping your eyes on the road and using your turn signal might just prevent you from driving home (or turning in your rental car) with a big dent in it.

CELEBRITY CHEF – Well-known local chef Les Kincaid’s 1.5 hour weekly show features famous restaurateurs, celebrity chefs, cookbook authors, winemakers, vintners, master sommeliers and all of the entertainers living or working in Las Vegas. This is a “must” for those of you who enjoy the top notch epicurean offerings that Las Vegas now offers. The show airs at noon Pacific time on Saturdays on KDWN 720 AM which you can listen to online at http://www.broadcast.com/radio/talk/kdwn/ The show is now also aired on the Cable Radio Network (check your cable listings for station).

DALE EARNHARDT – Thousands have showed up at the NASCAR Cafe (Sahara Hotel, see our restaurant review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-03-15.htm ) to pay tribute to the infamous driver who lost his life in last weekend’s Daytona 500. The replica NASCAR car at the cafe happened to be the #3 car of Earnhardt’s. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-20-Tue-2001/news/15482890.html

FEATURE STORY: Clint Holmes

Someone once joked that Las Vegas is full of headliners who are “the biggest names you have never heard of.” You get off the plane, drive down the Strip, and see names like Danny Gans or Clint Holmes and you see their faces in the tourist magazines and ask yourself “What do they do, and why are they worth some of my hard earned gambling money”?

Actually, Clint Holmes is no stranger to the music business. In 1974, he scored a #1 hit with “Playground In My Mind (My Name Is Michael)” and over the years appeared as Joan Rivers’ sidekick and announcer on “The Late Show” as well as work with both Entertainment Tonight and a successful run in Atlantic City.

You may enter the showroom not knowing who he is, but you won’t leave that way. His mother was a classically trained opera singer from England and his dad was a jazz musician from the US That left Clint blessed with not only an amazing technical singing ability, but the emotional flow to put with the pitch. Combined with his live 12-piece band and the modernized showroom at Harrah’s and you have every element for a great show.

Clint performs the work of other artists as well as original songs in a free-flowing expose of his life story. Not Broadway, but a little bit of background and banter here and there to weave it together. Fortunately, his life story is interesting, and the music is enjoyable.

His camaraderie with musical director Bill Fayne is sincere as their friendship dates back many years. While most stars want the spotlight to shine on them alone, he shares it with every member of the band, each extremely talented in their own right working together for a magnificent collaboration.

This show is “Old Vegas” style entertainment. The mood is upbeat, friendly, and warm. The songs range from jazz to soul and over the course of the show, Holmes creates a strong bond with the audience. If you want to hear techno and see people fly off the walls, try De La Guarda. If your tastes lean more toward sitting with a drink and enjoying and appreciating a fine artist and showman take the stage and entertain you, pocket a couple of chips from your first winning session at the tables and set them aside to see Clint Holmes.
