Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! In the 90’s this week, unusually warm (80 F is normal this year). Just a couple of quick things:

UNLV Football Tickets On Sale — If one of these teams is your team, what better excuse for a trip to Las Vegas to see your team (probably) kick the snot out of UNLV:

As a 16 year resident, I’m a UNLV fan and happy to see their football team on the rise. However, this is going to be a tough September for me: I was born and raised in Oregon and attended Portland State. I’m a big fan of both Oregon and Oregon State football so the UNLV/Oregon State game is going to be a tough one for me to watch.

I’m also a big fan of the Hawaii Warriors, who come to town to play a week later. I’ve been following them for years (former coach June Jones has a big Oregon connection) and enjoy their exciting brand of football.

With so many of our Hawaiian friends living here in Las Vegas, and so many more that visit (to the tune of about a million visitors per year from The Islands), the crowd at the UNLV/Hawaii game is going to be pretty evenly split with a likely sell-out and plenty of electricity in the air.

Both Mother’s Day and Cinco De Mayo are coming soon and we are compiling events for both days:

Check out the events happening for Cinco de Mayo!

Check out the events happening for Mother’s Day!

I’m a little under-the-weather this week (probably from the check I had to send the IRS last week… you want to talk about neusea-inducing). So I’m going to turn it over to our writer Denise Almas. We’ve assigned her to cover the pending launch of the new Lion King show here in Las Vegas. I’ll be back later in the newsletter with Members Mania.

The Lion King is obviously the biggest show to hit town in some time, and one that is already drawing great interest among our readers:

Lion King Las Vegas – Brilliant and Riveting

by Denise Almas

Preparing to leap onto the Mandalay Bay Theater stage is a talented international cast in DisneyÆs The Lion King. The cast, which includes nine South African natives, has been comprised of cast members from other Lion King productions, making this an experienced ensemble ready to be King of the Las Vegas Strip.

With brilliant costumes, more than 200 puppets, and riveting music, the coming of age story of the young lion cub, Simba, will entertain young and old alike. According to Thomas Schumacher, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Group, ôThe Las Vegas production will be every bit the equal of the spectacular Broadway experience.ö

Indeed, Alton F. White will don an 11 ounce mask as he plays ôMufasaö the lion king. WhiteÆs credits include The Lion KingÆs Broadway company, Ragtime, Tommy, The Color Purple, and Miss Saigon.

Buyi Zama, a native of South Africa, has performed in seven productions of The Lion King and will play the wise ôRafiki.ö Her credits also include backing as a vocalist for Whitney Houston and Rebecca Malope.

Kissy Simmons will be the lioness, ôNalaö. She joins the cast from the Broadway production and has also been in the national tour of the production.

ôSimba,ö the lion cub, will be played by Clifton Oliver who has also performed in the Los Angeles production of The Lion King, as well as in the Broadway productions of Grease, Rent and Wicked.

ôScar,ö the Lion KingÆs sinister brother, is played by Thom Sesma. SesmaÆs credits include The Man of La Mancha, The Times They Are A-ChanginÆ, and La Cage Aux Folles on Broadway.

This talented and celebrated cast will compliment the award winning music, which includes music by Elton John and Time Rice, as well as music by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer. The Lion King score fuses Western pop music with the sounds and rhythms of Africa, bringing to life this unique and award winning musical.

DisneyÆs Tony Award winning production will journey onto the Mandalay Bay Stage on May 5, 2009, with the premiere on May 15, 2009. Come enjoy the Pride.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

I found this newsletter about a year ago and I really enjoy to read all the news about Las Vegas every time!

At the end of May I will visit Las Vegas again for 3 weeks! I try to do this every year (to be honest, it’s the only reason for me to go to work). We had the first snow this year October 31st and today it’s still snowing. Editors Note: This letter was sent to us a few weeks ago). We do have tons and tons of snow and even can’t go outside with the car. Also the last few ‘summers’ were not the best. The last really great summer we had was back in 2003.

I usually travel alone (nobody else stays for 3 weeks in Vegas) and my friends from Switzerland visit me and then travel to other places. This year my boss is in San Francisco and will drive with the car to Vegas for one week. And later another couple visits Vegas for 3 days and we will meet.

Last year I was staying at the Luxor in a tower room. It was so great there that I will stay there again this year. It’s also never a problem to book for such a long time. People here in Switzerland usually stay for 3-4 days in town and then drive or fly away. Back at home they jump in another airplane a travel to a Greek or Spain island and lay in the sun at the beach. That makes no sense for me. I can do all this in Vegas too. The pool area’s so great and relaxing. Of course I was on several islands in Europe too, but when I went to Vegas the first time in 1998 it was clear for me: that’s the town I will return as often as I can, and it’s every time the best time of the year I have. I can’t tell you how much I look forward to May 28th when the plane starts!!!

There are so much more things to do in Vegas than the Casinos. I travel with empty suitcases and buy as much as I can carry. Then the Motor Speedway is a must too! We also like to walk a lot or drive to Arizona or Utah and visit the National parks. This area is also very interesting. Sometimes I think 3 weeks is not enough…. 😉

Barbara Eichhorn from Switzerland

Ted Responds:

Thanks for the great letter! Sometimes, new readers (who have never been to Las Vegas) will write and say “We are coming for four days… what should we see?” I politely tell them that they could stay for a month and not run out of things to do or see as there is plenty to do for almost every interest and to just stay subscribed to the newsletter to find out what is currently happening.

May is a great month to be here as our 100 degree (F) temps generally have not hit yet, but it no longer gets cold at night. Every day is a perfect day to hang out by the pool or go see some of the amazing scenery of the beautiful Southwest U.S. and every night is perfect for strolling in the neon or taking in a show.

Thanks again for reading and telling your friends. We have a very loyal international readership base (about 25% of our readers) and are very appreciative of the time and effort it takes to visit us.

My wife and I spent a week in Vegas Feb 4 to 11. We stayed downtown 4 nights and on the strip for 3. We are more than upset with the number of card flickers in front of Flamingo, O’Shea’s, and Harrah’s. They are obnoxious flicking their cards in your face and blocking passage on the sidewalk. The casinos stand to lose as these people scare some elders. They should be limited or made to stand at the end of the walkway and not in the middle. Some of the people actually assault you with their mannerisms.

Ellis Island is every bodies dream of good food at reasonable prices.

RUSE1941

Ted Responds:

Believe me… the hotels have tried time and time again to restrict the people handing out the “girls to your room” cards. Including a move to attempt to make the sidewalks in front of each casino the private property of the casino. The ACLU has fought them tooth and nail as they feel it is a free speech issue. At this point, your best bet is to simply ignore them. Keep your eyes straight ahead and keep walking.

Just want to tell you about our visit Feb. 2, 2009. Our first stay at Planet Hollywood and I was most disappointed. No view from the window. One chair in the room to watch the nice TV. I ask for another chair and they told me to contact the banquet area and I did and was told there was a rental fee and they would call me back. No chair and no call back.

A standard fee of over $5.00 for water and newspaper that we didn’t want. A college group moved in Fri. night and no complimentary drinks. My last stay there. The beds were nice.

Thanks for all your news.

BJ Dailey

Ted Responds:

I know we’ve all had times when something doesn’t live up to expectations. When it comes to an issue with a Las Vegas hotel (attraction, restaurant, you name it), this is what I strongly advise:

Find the actual snail mail (postal) address and write them a letter. It doesn’t have to be long, but but it should be calm and rational (just as your note was). Let them know you were not pleased and why. At the very least, your voice gets heard. And, they just might offer to do something to make it right on your next visit.

Even though we live in a computer/email age, a real postal mail letter really sends an impact. If you go to Google Maps and then enter Name Of Hotel Las Vegas, it will usually pull up the hotel location and actual address.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Appreciate the notes regarding me missing last issue for medical reasons. I’m on the mend (knock on wood) and looking forward to getting back to work on a regular basis.

Wayne Newton Returns With New Las Vegas Dates – Wayne Newton adds October 16 û 22 and November 13 û 19 dates to his performance schedule at the Hollywood Theatre inside MGM Grand. Show time is 8:30 p.m. nightly. My advice? If you are going to be in town, see the show.á

Sure… his voice isn’t what it used to be. But he’s still the consummate showman, performs with a full band, and one of the few ties to the glamor and “Rat Pack” days of Las Vegas. He’s going strong after a health scare last year and we wish him many years of health, but he’s not going to be performing forever. Click for Wayne Newton Tickets (Las Vegas and other cities).

MGM CityCenter Continues To Draw Interest – We keep getting questions about CityCenter and visitors continue to marvel at how fast it is rising on the Las Vegas Strip. For new readers (or those who missed it last time), here’s some of the basics from developer MGM Grand:

ARIA Resort & Casino will be the spectacular gaming resort that will form the core of CityCenter, a more than $8 billion dazzling vertical city currently underway on the Las Vegas Strip next to Bellagio. Opening in late 2009, ARIA will deliver an unprecedented combination of striking architecture, sustainable design, high-end service and spectacular amenities, introducing a new generation of resort experiences and redefining the Las Vegas skyline. I’d love to work with you on a story to introduce ARIA Resort & Casino.

Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, the dramatic soaring 61-story hotel tower, casino and convention center will be CityCenter’s most iconic feature. CityCenter also will feature three luxurious non-gaming hotels: Las Vegas’ first Mandarin Oriental, The Harmon Hotel, Spa & Residences and Vdara Condo Hotel; Veer Towers, the development’s only strictly residential buildings; The Crystals, a 500,000-square-foot retail and entertainment district; and a $40 million public Fine Art Program that will deliver new works of art and iconic pieces by the likes of Maya Lin, Nancy Rubins and Claes Oldenburg, among others.

From luxurious accommodations and entertainment to sophisticated retail and fine art, CityCenter will raise Las Vegas’ amenities and offerings to unparalleled heights and capture the world’s attention as the must-see, must-experience destination across the globe when it opens in late 2009.

Long Live Laughlin – (From the Review-Journal). The latest gambit by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to revive interest in isolated Laughlin is a $2.5 million outreach effort in California and Arizona.

It emphasizes the opportunity for visitors to spend time drinking, gambling and partying along the Colorado River at a fraction of what it costs to let loose in Las Vegas.

The ads are aimed at the 40- to 60-year-old demographic of people who, market researchers say, have disposable income but are wary of overspending. The average daily room rate in Laughlin was $46.87 in July, compared to $105.97 in Las Vegas, according to the latest Southern Nevada visitation reports.

Families Not Moving To Las Vegas? 5000 people (give or take) continue to relocate here each month. Despite the continued influx, local school enrollment is up ájust 0.3 percent over last year (basically flat) as those in construction and illegal aliens (sometimes one in the same) with families flee town for work elsewhere.á

This lack of school district growth should flatten out the school district budget needs and (hopefully) quiet some of the “tax the tourists for schools” talk which keeps floating around.

US 93 Widening Is On – Our friends from Los Angeles take it for granted that the ride to Las Vegas is all-freeway. Sometimes a very crowded freeway, but still all prime road. However, our friends who drive ináfrom Arizona, New Mexico and points southeast of Las Vegas don’t have it so good with long stretches of two-lane road during the final trek.

That is changing! Many know that the Hoover Dam bypass bridge is moving along and funding has just been secured to four-lane the 15 miles of US 93 leading up to the bridge (on the Arizona side). Also, talks are getting more serious about a Boulder City bypass which could shed significant time off the journey.

Complimentary First Month With Netflix – I’ve been a Netflix subscriber for a long time, and love it! No due dates, no late fees, and I don’t even have to turn on my car to get (or drop off) a video. Now, you can even watch many of their selections on your computer “on demand” in high quality video (looks great even on the computer connected to my big flat screen).

They want to give all of our U.S. readers one complimentary month to check the service out. Head over to Netflix One Month Complimentary Membership

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Ted,

First, I want to compliment you on your newsletter. I look forward to getting each one of them.

I have been going to Las Vegas at least once a year for about 30 years now and have certainly seen the change from ‘the old’ Las Vegas to what it is now. It seems that the “new” Las Vegas wants to cater to the Hollywood types who expect to have their stays comped to the richer people who can afford to pay the extremely high food costs and room costs. I have reservations to go again this year for a week but am thinking about not going again as I don’t like the ‘new’ Las Vegas.á

I liked the old slot machines where the reels went around and around and you knew what would pay and what wouldn’t. I don’t like the new type of slot machines where it has a line going all over the screen and I never understand what pays and what doesn’t.

With the large, nice casino’s the foot traffic down around New York, New York, MGM Grand, Paris, etc you cant even walk down the sidewalk except to get behind someone and just walk at their pace.

Maybe the owners of these places will get the message on their tight machines and things but I doubt if I will ever go back out there to know what happens.

Clearnce Fakes

á

Ted Responds:

I also won’t touch the new slots. I don’t have the time to figure them out and don’t want to play a game unless I know what is going on. They were put in place so you could play anywhere from a penny to a couple of dollars per play on the same game (and to divert your attention to how fast they were sucking down your cash).

The “new” Las Vegas does have plenty to offer, see, and do. But I continue to suggest that people yearning for the “old” Las Vegas try a stay downtown. It will be easier on your budget and you’ll probably have a better shot at winning. Plus, poke around and you just may find some of the older slot games you prefer at downtown casinos!

Dear Ted,

I just returned from my 24th visit to Vegas and had a wonderful time as usual. I stayed at the Flamingo and was really happy with the friendly desk staff, cage personnel, restaurant staff at the Tropical Breeze, and all the Harrahs employees at all the Vegas properties I visited.

I saw three fun and entertaining shows, The Price is Right Live, Nathan Burton and The Vinnie Favorito show. The Price is Right was the most fun I’ve ever had at a Vegas show. I was however subjected to the absolute worst show I have ever seen in Vegas. I went to the X-Burlesque show at the Flamingo expecting to see a tribute to burlesque. This fiasco was anything but a tribute. The music was bad and much too loud, the dancing was awful and the girls were very unattractive except for two of the six girls. This show was nothing like it was advertised and an embarrassment. I have seen Jubilee and Crazy Girls and both of these shows were top notch. X- Burlesque was a disappointing waste of money.á

Despite this disappointment Vegas was as usual a spectacular time and as usual I saw things that weren’t there just a year ago.

Michael from Lowell, Indiana

Back in May/June I read somewhere that HooterÆs was being sold. I was wondering if you had any info on what has happened to that transaction. Did it fall through?

I am curious as we are staying there 8/22 for 2 nights for our nephewÆs 21’st birthday. Our first stay was last Thanksgiving & we had a lovely stay in one of the Bungalow rooms and we would like to stay there again this Thanksgiving.

I enjoy accessvegas.com newsletter very much. Thank you.

Shannon from Costa Mesa, CA

á

Ted Responds:

The sale fell through due to the trouble obtaining financing in the present economy. Hooters is operating as normal and recently added a new country music bar with live music and no cover. Also, both The Mentalist: Gerry McCambridge and Bobby “The Pitbull Of Comedy” Slayton continue to perform (both of which are great shows).

Thanks for reading and telling your friends!

Hi, I haven’t been to Vegas for a couple of years. I will be visiting soon for 4 days. What new things should I see? Thanks for any advise!

Gary Nawrocki

Ted Responds:

Scroll down the right-hand sidebar and you’ll see links to monthly archives of the newsletter. Work your way through those and you’ll be up to speed on all the new stuff from the past couple of years!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! This week, we are going to revisit a theme I briefly touched upon a few weeks ago: If you want the REAL Las Vegas (the one everyone enjoyed a number of years ago with inexpensive room rates, reasonably priced food, and a fair shot at winning some money)… try Fremont Street Downtown!

Important Note: Many long time visitors are very concerned about the “old” vs. “new” Las Vegas. What has changed and why. However, many have a visit planned and simply want to continue to enjoy our newsletter with the latest top Las Vegas information we always offer.

In this issue, we cover plenty of the “old” vs “new” that many readers are demanding. However… for the sake of keeping the newsletter a reasonable length, we will be posting some of that topic online for further review.

Loose Slots, Single Deck Blackjack, 100 Times Odds On Craps, 99% Payback Slot Bank, Full Pay Video Poker – If you’ve been visiting Las Vegas more than five years, the odds are that you saw similar advertisements and signs in various casinos on The Strip and Downtown. Then, Las Vegas got hot. Happening. The hip place to go.á

The Travel Channel seemed like “The Las Vegas Channel” because they showed so many Vegas-related programs. Any news out of Las Vegas made newspapers world-wide. This brought record numbers of new visitors to town.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition – Moving, Memorable & Haunting

by Devon Brooke Clasen

A far cry from the flashy, showy style of so many shows and attractions in Las Vegas,áTitanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Tropicana Resort presents a moving, memorable yet haunting historic survey of the 20th century’s most infamous maritime disaster, showcased in a generously sized 25,000-square-foot retrospective.

Entering the exhibit, each visitor is outfitted with a personal audio device, supplying narrated commentary and facts as well as dramatic readings of historic quotes from figures connected to the ship’s construction.

Additionally, guests are provided with a charming keepsake boarding pass for the RMS Titanic, complete with the name and personal information of an actual passenger, whose fate is to be revealed upon the exhibition’s completion; a clever yet sobering touch to truly personalize the experience.

X Burlesque – Sharp, Sexy, and Entertaining

by Lincoln Hudson

What Happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, as the saying goes. At The Flamingo, nothing could be hotter than the extraordinary 75 minute high octane dance show called ‘X-Burlesque.

Sharp, sexy and very entertaining to the eye, the X-Girls perform in the Second City Theatre displaying a beautiful mixture of both modern dance and the avant-garde. Sexy or adult musical revues seem to be catching on in Vegas these days and this one seems quite happy to be competing alongside Bite and Cirque Du Soleil’s Zumanity.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

My wife and I just returned home from our Vegas trip (6 nights/5 days). We stayed for the first time at the Paris (2 nights) and then 4 nights downtown at Main Street Station. The biggest change we noticed was the lack of people.á

I know it was the 4th of July week, but the ‘people’ traffic was much less than before. We asked a floor person at MSS about traffic and she too said the size of the crowds were much smaller than they use to be. My guess as well as hers was, ‘all about the cost of gas’.

I think the casinos are helping their bottom line by making slots much tighter, just as the airlines are charging for suitcases and giving less service. It may be time to re-think our Vegas trips. Enjoy your weekly publication.

Pleasant Garden, NC

Ted Responds:

I agree with you: The gaming properties tried to squeeze tourists too hard during the good times, and it is biting them back during the bad times.

For decades, people would go through hell and high water to get to Las Vegas regardless of the economy. They knew the reward would be reasonably priced rooms and food, plus a fair chance at winning some money.

It is a rude awakening for many in hotel/casino management, many whom have never been here long enough to see a downturn and thought the “gravy train” of the past few years was the norm.

My prediction? Everyone will finally see a return to some of the “old Vegas” way of doing things that attracted so many for so long.

Click to read my entire response: Lack Of Las Vegas Visitors?

Since reviewing things on your site as well as others, itÆs apparent that Las Vegas is experiencing a slow down in economy. Gambled money and room occupancy is down, even our paper has reported it in the Sunday travel section. My suggestion is to have the city and casinoÆs work in conjunction with the airlines to help lower the cost of flights in and out of Las Vegas.

My wife and I travel on the average 4 times a year to L.V., being that we gamble a lot, Hooters has ôcompedö us for each stay. The travel is whatÆs costing us and preventing us from going more then 2 times this year so far. An example of price fares form Cleveland to L.V. via Continental airlines û In April it was $ 198. round trip ; in May it was $ 218. round trip; now the cheapest we can travel is $ 438. round trip.

I know airlines are taking a beating on fuel cost, but if the city and casinoÆs can work with the airlines to help subsidize travel I would bet that more people would come out and reverse the decline in gambling revenue and room occupancy. ItÆs just a suggestion, for a 4day û 3 night trip we generally add $ 1,500. to the L.V. economy via gambling; food; drinks; and misc spending. Thank you for your time to review my request,

John M. Kacvinsky

á

Ted Responds:

Interesting thoughts. Actually, the hotels are starting to “subsidize” the cost of the flights by slashing their room rates. You end up paying more for your flight, but less for rooms.

I realize that doesn’t help those like you who gamble enough to get your stay comped. For those of you who do play enough to get free rooms, I’d strongly suggest writing the hotel you give your action to and simply tell them “Hey… we come and gamble a lot of money, but airfare is killing us and a free room just doesn’t make it worth coming out. Is there any way players at are level can get something like a rebate on our airfare, extra free play, or meals?”

Per the city or casinos subsidizing flights:

Monty Python’s Spamalot

By Guy Chapman

For those who consider themselves a Monty Python fan, there is a special breed of humor found within the absurdity of the British comedy troop. While the classic film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” carried its fair share of catchy tunes, it would have never been considered a Broadway-scale musical… until now. “Spamalot” takes the troop”s second film and turns it into a full tour de farce that showcases a spectacle that is “lovingly ripped off from” the Python”s parody of the Arthurian Legend.

So is “Spamalot” simply an adaptation of the film? Monty Python fans know that nothing is ever as it seems when it comes to comedy, and to always expect the unexpected. While “Spamalot” lifts primarily from the original film, it also serves up a buffet of classic Python songs from past “Flying Circus” skits, and includes them into the story in clever and seamless ways. The rest of the production adds new extended scenes into the story that fit well with the absurd sense of humor the film is known for. Click to Read Entire Spamalot Review…

Tony and Tina’s Wedding

By Sarah Steinberg

“Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding” at the Calypso Room at the Rio Hotel & Casino is a must-see! It pulls you in immediately. Literally the actors, in character, pull you in the minute you walk through the door. You will be ushered to your table and then greeted by your emcee for the evening, the obnoxious, loud Vinnie Black and his tacky wife Loretta. Vinnie is like a shock to the system, but in a good way, pulling you right into the fun. “Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding” is the story of two crazy Italian families, the Vitale’s and the Nunzio’s, coming together for an evening of mayhem and shenanigans. Don”t think you’ll be just sitting back and watching the show. This is an interactive experience and you will be a part of it.

Before the wedding ceremony even begins, the macho groomsmen with attitude will make you feel like you”re part of the family, but not just any family. Everyone, including the bride and groom-to-be, make their rounds greeting the guests. That would be you and me folks, so get prepared to experience two hours of zany fun. Family “issues” delay the start of the wedding while Sister Albert Maria is appalled by the certain behavior of the sleazy Italian men. With the help of Father Mark, the mild-mannered priest, they try to get this motley crew under control and get through the wedding ceremony. Click to Read Entire Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding Review…

Gambling Talk: Video Keno – Part Eight – with Victor H. Royer. Four Card Keno Continued – You must remember that each time you do anything, to the machine this is a “user command”, and it will do what it’s programmed to do with such commands. So, unless you start from the start, the machine won’t “know” you only wanted to make one change. It will take that as a “new event”, and if you don’t start at the beginning, nothing that you had been playing before will so remain.

This becomes even more important when it comes to the making of wagers, because many people habitually change one card or another, and forget to go through the procedure from the start, and then wonder why the machine either doesn’t play, or somehow doesn’t play all the cards or numbers they had previously marked. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Christmas was sunny but on the chilly side. We hope you and yours had a great holiday. New Years Eve is in the air and slated to be another huge year. Winds permitting, The Strip with light up with fireworks from the MGM to Stratosphere. The Plaza downtown is putting on their own fireworks show at 12:30 AM as to not conflict with the massive celebration taking place under the Fremont Street light show canopy.

Local TV station KLAS has streamed the fireworks show live in years past. No indication if they are going to do so this year, but you can try their link just before midnight Pacific and see.

It is unfortunate that most of you can’t watch the full 2-3 hour coverage that our local stations do. Short of being here in person, there is really no way to describe the excitement and festivities. The ball drop in New York City is about as exciting as watching paint dry in comparison.

The networks would love to do New Years from Las Vegas. The problem? Midnight on the east coast is only 9 PM here, a time when the party is barely getting started.

Do you have a few people you missed giving holiday Best Wishes to? Co’mon… we all had a couple of people we heard from that we didn’t get a card or note to. It isn’t too late: Pick one of the great holiday photos from our Bellagio Gardens Christmas 2007 Pictures area and send it as an E-Card right now!

Flying Etiquette – Delta Airlines has created a number of short online videos about air travel etiquette called Planeguage. Frequent fliers will find them all too humorous. Those that fly less regularly will enjoy the travel tips.

Mac King Is Everywhere – If you’ve been to Applebees during this season and had kids with you, odds are they were handed a “Holiday Hocus Pocus” with crayons and a little color book with simply magic tricks kids can do. Your local Applebees may still be handing them out. Give them a call and take the kids!

He’s also put out a couple of cool products perfect for kids (of all ages) who want to have fun with magic. Mac King’s Great Big Book-o-Magic contains over 50 very cool (and mystifying) tricks that are easy to learn and available at Barnes and Noble (stores or online). Also available is his Magic In A Minute Truck-o-Tricks with monkeys, cards, balls, strings and other props, jokes, and gags. Available at toy stores nationwide or Mac King Magic Shop. We just may be giving some sets out in the near future.

Also, you can’t go wrong checking out Mac’s afternoon show at Harrah’s. By far the best bargain and a show everyone will enjoy. Check out Mac King Tickets

New Las Vegas Photo Sets – We took a trip down Las Vegas Blvd. South recently. And we mean South. Starting at the west side of the airport at the Las Vegas sign… and heading SOUTH. Everyone is watching the massive construction on The Strip, but the next wave of resorts, gaming, and development is already in planning and progress. Get a good look now. It won’t look like this much longer. (Click photo for complete photo set)

We also added a few photo to reflect the remodeling and upgrades at the Golden Nugget. (Warning… these were taken in early fall when the weather was still very warm. Don’t bring your swimsuit this time of year).

Passing along a couple of “must know” tips…

  • Skip the casino ATM fees. You know that pulling money out of a casino ATM is obnoxiously expensive. Fees for casino ATM’s are approaching $5, then your bank hits you for another few bucks. The solution? Buy something negligible at one of the drug stores along The Strip and use your ATM debit card to get cash back. A pack of gum or bottle of water will cost around a dollar (cheaper than any ATM fee) and most stores will give you up to $100 cash back. This also may work at the many independent sundry/liquor stores. We haven’t tried it yet at hotel gift shops, but never hurts to ask if they will give you cash back with a debit card.

Do all fellow readers a favor: If you find a certain hotel gift shop or independent sundry store on The Strip or Downtown that lets you use your debit for cash back, drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com and we’ll start creating a list for all members to access.

  • Avoid the car rental traffic jam. The new car rental facility guides everyone out of the building and sends them south on Gilespie, west on Warm Springs, then north on Las Vegas Blvd. The problem? An almost constant traffic jam once you turn on to Las Vegas Blvd. because you are just south of where it intersects with our Beltway freeway and a major shopping area.Simple solution? Make a left turn out of the car rental lot. Take that road (Gilespie) north until it ends at Sunset. A quick left (west) on Sunset leads to Las Vegas Blvd. and you just zoomed past the entire traffic mess. Google map of suggested route. You’ll save yourself 10-15 minutes. We know. We use this shortcut all the time doing our local business in the area.

This was taken on Jan 14th 07 – the Tropicana’s water fall, yes its frozen. It was real cold the entire 4 days we were there. We were married on the 15th. The other picture is of the Stardust (well the sign) I know it came down a few weeks later.

Enjoy the pics!
Sandy & Steve

Thanks for the great photos! I saved them for the end of the year because losing The Stardust was certainly a big story of 2007. Also, a good reminder for people coming during the winter: It is sunny almost every day here, but not always warm. Average highs for January are 57 degrees, but average is the key word. As this newsletter goes out, we are facing 2-3 days where the low will be around freezing.

(Note to self… dig out really warm coat). Bring on summer… I so hate the cold…

Well I never made it to Vegas this past weekend. My daughter was sick and I felt I couldn’t leave her, but she’s fine now and it wasn’t serious. I have to say that South Point was great in that they didn’t charge me the requisite 1 night cancellation fee. The rest of the group went so I thought I’d let you know their reviews. They had good things to say about the hotel. The staff at the hotel were very pleasant and check in was no problem. They had reserved King beds and were given double beds but when they called the desk, she promptly found them rooms with Kings and also all on the same floor next to each other. The rooms were spotless, and huge. The casino wasn’t smoky and the pool was good. The only complaint about the pool was it could’ve been a little more secluded. Maybe more lush greenery(ala Mirage pool). The Del-Mar Deli was good and the breakfast buffet was good…especially at $6 with the discount coupon.

The liquor store on-site was a hit with reasonable prices. There is construction going on but the men in the group actually enjoyed watching the crane doing it’s thing while they had cocktail in hand by the pool. They used the shuttle to and from Mandalay Bay frequently, but the complaint was that it stopped running too early. They got tickets to Love. 2 from the group thought it was absolutely the best show they’ve ever seen, the other 4 thought it was just good…not being huge Beatles fans and there was also a 45 minute delay due to technical difficulties.

They did a Red Rock Jeep tour which they all enjoyed. They had dinner buffets at the Mirage and Bellagio with Bellagio getting a slightly better review than the Mirage based on food quality. Dinner at Canaletto at the Venetian was just OK…the food and also a less than pleasant waitress. However, they thought the surroundings were great, along with the gondola ride they took. They spent a little time in the bar at Kahunaville which they thought was fun. And one person won $250 on a slot machine at Bellagio with a $5 chip they found on the floor. So overall they had a good time with lots of laughs -and I was home wishing I was there.

So, thank you for all your info, and I will be checking out the newsletters and planning my trip whenever that may be…hopefully sooner rather than later. Take care!

Denise

Denise had asked about the South Point and ended up not being able to make the trip with her group, but she did report on the experience her group had and we appreciate the trip report!

As our daughter is in Graduate School at UNLV, my wife and I (we live in San Diego) consider Las Vegas our second home (Love Las Vegas and the people). Having mentioned that, I would like your help.I have a birthday coming up and will be in town to celebrate. I have been looking at many of the hotels gift shops for a embroidered black silk jacket or something else, that has the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign that is on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love the newsletter and look forward to it every week. Keep up the excellent work.

Regards and thank you for your help in advance.

Paul Wittmann
San Diego, CA

Heck of a question. I’m not sure I’ve seen one. The Las Vegas sign isn’t trademarked, so anyone can use it or variations of it. The hotels pretty much want to sell only stuff with their name on it. When in town, I’d check the Bonanza Gift Shop… it is huge. You might find something there.

Also, you may try Ebay. Try a search for

las vegas jacket

or similar.

Hope this helps!

I would just like to say what a great magazine you have, It is really great to read and it brings back at lot of memories as we came to Las Vegas last year and the year before.Keep up the good work.

Thank you,

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Christmas is in the air, New Years Eve is getting close, and this newsletter is jammed with amazing info and photos. Let’s get started!

New Years Eve, New Years Eve, New Years Eve, New Years Eve…

The fireworks are set, the concerts ready to roll, and the nightclubs all trying to top each other. The theme is “The Best Is Yet To Come” and the fireworks show will reach from the MGM Grand to The Stratosphere with an display lasting more than eight minutes! (As always, sustained winds at the top of the hotels could put a damper on the display, but so far it has always gone off).

We have an extended listing of New Years Eve events running down the side of the newsletter this week or you can go direct to http://www.accessvegas.com/new-years-eve-2007

Bellagio’s Holiday Display is attracting droves of visitors and features some new twists not seen in years past:

Click on either of the above photos to enjoy the entire amazing holiday photo set for a taste of the season from Las Vegas. Don’t forget to spread the Christmas cheer: All photos in our Bellagio Gardens Christmas 2007 can be sent as a free E-Card. Send friends and family members some holiday E-Cards on us!

We say goodbye and a big Thank You to Celine Dion. Her five year run just wrapped up at Caesars, lasting far longer than originally anticipated. 3 million people saw the 717 shows. Whether you love or loathe her, no one can deny the amazing track record (4000 seats nightly) for a single headliner in the modern Las Vegas era.

What’s more, she adopted Las Vegas as her “hometown” and was very active in the community with charity and other events. She even occasionally was spotted shopping at the Henderson Walmart (closest to her Lake Las Vegas home)! If you missed her here, we do have tickets various dates of her pending tour: Celine Dion World Tour Tickets

Bette Midler is Celine’s replacement, and everyone will be watching to see how she does. Elton John will also be playing his selected Ceasars dates. Here are related links:

Hannah Montana Hits Las Vegas – With Las Vegas now having more than two million residents, Miley “Hanna Montana” Cyrus’ two tour dates here sold out in a matter of minutes. A third date was added, and sold out immediately. If your kids are old enough to visit and young enough to enjoy Hanna Montana (and you understand that sold-out concert resale tickets are going to be a bit expensive), you can check out Hanna Montana Las Vegas Concert Tickets

Vegas On TV – The Las Vegas Bowl (Tickets) airs on ESPN at 5:00 PM Pacific Time on December 22, 2007 with BYU looking for revenge over a struggling UCLA team. Again this year, NBC’s Holiday On Ice airs on Christmas Day (check local NBC listings). The event was taped a couple of weeks ago at The Orleans.

Goodbye Sweet Louie – Checkmates singer Marvin “Sweet Louie” Smith passed away last week while performing aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean. If you have visited Las Vegas for more than a few times, you probably saw The Checkmates performing somewhere. It would be easier to list the places they didn’t play over the decades!

The past few years they alternated between The Sahara, Casino Montelago (Lake Las Vegas) and Arizona Charlies East. Sweet Louie was fond of saying that every night was a Saturday night when they were performing, and I saw them light up more than one casino lounge over the years. Video, photos and other info is still online at http://www.thecheckmates.com

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Never a dull moment around here. The Venetian’s new Palazzo Tower is topped out and looks finished as a building. They are working around the clock on interior and ground level exterior in preparation for a late December opening.

The resort in part gives this description of what is coming:

The Palazzo Casino Resort will include over 375 concierge-level suites and will also include six villas (up to 11,000 square feet each) which will have 3-4 bedrooms, 3.5-4.5 baths, extensive living areas, media rooms, private pools, private jacuzzis, private salons, massage areas, heated spas, personal gyms and, in some cases, private putting greens.

The presidential suites and the villas will also offer private butler services. The Palazzo hotel will have 296 multi-room suites, including six presidential suites. The Palazzo hotel will also have an elaborate pool deck (with seven pools, gardens, sculptures, cabanas and fountains) and an adjacent spa facility.

Las Vegas Taxi Fares On The Rise – I guess long-hauling you and trying to divert you to places you otherwise didn’t ask to go (so they can get a fat kick-back) just isn’t enough. This according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Beginning Oct. 1, passengers will be charged $3.30 for the initial cost of hiring a cab, or drop fee, a dime increase from the current rate. The cost per hour for the time spent traveling slower than 8-12 mph, known as the wait-time charge, will rise to $28 from $22. Even before the increases approved last month, those fees were higher than similar charges in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Chicago.

Drivers complain they don’t make as much money in Las Vegas as they would elsewhere because of the close proximity of the city’s prime destinations. McCarran International Airport is a four-mile trip to the Strip, and most of the hotels are located within a short drive, Jones noted.

The last paragraph would hold more water if the local cabbies weren’t famous for long-hauling customers on a regular basis (which I discuss and condemn every few months in this column). I’ve been long hauled many times and I’ll share a few of those stories in my next podcast (coming soon). For those wanting to read the full story, go to Taxi fares keep pace with nation’s highest

We have Hanna Montana tickets in all cities of the current tour. Brace yourself because they are resale tickets (pretty much every show sold out instantly) so good seats are going to be a little spendy. However… if your teen or tween watches you go off and enjoy yourself in Las Vegas, this is a great way to spend some time with them and calm some of that guilt! Tickets at Hanna Montana Tickets

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! It’s been about 10 days since we last published. Chalk it up to a miserable combination of an internet outage earlier this week combined with a bad networking cord leaving us scratching our head and doing a lot of troubleshooting. It reminds me how much we talk the internet for granted, especially a power user such as myself who listens almost exclusively to radio online and looks up everything from business info to the TV listings online. (I do keep my phone book every time they deliver it. I find they make great doorstops).

World Series of Poker Has A Winner – California psychologist Jerry Chang won the main event, beating 6,358 people to capture the famed bracelet and the $8,250,000 first prize. The 39-year-old psychologist and social worker from Temecula (California) caught an inside straight on the final card of the final hand.

The rest of the top 5:

  • 2nd Place: Tuan Lam, 41, of Mississauga, Ontario (Canada), $4,840,981
  • 3rd Place: Raymond Rahme, 62, of Johannesburg, South Africa, $3,048,025
  • 4th Place: Alex Kravchenko, 36, of Moscow, Russia, $1,852,721
  • 5th Place: Jon Kalmar, 34, of Chorley, Lancashire (UK), $1,255,069

Pictures, Pictures and More Pictures – We’ve had staff photographer Mark out and about. Many new photo sets soon to be posted, including this weeks set from the Siren’s of Treasure Island Tryouts. (Mark should have paid us for getting to do that assignment)! Click photo for complete gallery:

Sirens of TI perform nightly at 7:00 p.m., 8:30 p.m., 10:00 p.m., and 11:30 p.m. in front of of Treasure Island Hotel and Casino. Schedule does change seasonally and is usually posted in front of the hotel. Also available: Sirens of TI Performance Photos

If that isn’t your thing, next issue we’ll bring you the spectacular Route 66 Themed Display currently at The Bellagio. Although the display (which changes seasonally) is always a must-see, this one is particularly spectacular. Here is a preview:

Tickets, Tickets and More Tickets – We not only have tickets to all the great Las Vegas shows, but concerts and sporting events across the United States:

If you can’t make it to Las Vegas, treat yourself to some great seats to your favorite events!

Charity Concert and Bike Show – If you are a local or going to be in town Saturday night July 21, check out the flyer for the charity concert posted in this issue taking place at Steiners Pub, just four miles south of Mandalay Bay, on Las Vegas Blvd. (The Strip). Going to be both a fun and worthwhile time!

Dear Ted:My husband and I stayed at the Mirage Hotel from June 2-7th. On the morning of June 7th, at about 8:30 a.m. there was a loud alarm that sounded loudly in our hotel room. It said something to the effect that the hotel was “investigating an incident.” Although we were already awake, it was rather frightening. About 5 minutes later, another message came on stating that the “incident has been resolved.”

When we went downstairs, I had asked a casino manager what it was about and no one seemed to even be aware that there had been an alarm that had sounded, or at least they acted like they hadn’t. Would you happen to know WHY this alarm went off and WHAT it was about on June 7th? We have stayed in many hotels on the Las Vegas strip and have never experienced this before.

Kevin Cardiff

Ted Responds:

Sounds like the fire alarm. I’ve experienced quite a few because of the time I’ve spend in casinos over the years.

Because even a little smoke somewhere in the “back of the house” (away from guests) or any number of other minor fire or smoke incidents set off the alarm, they don’t want everyone going crazy and running for the doors right away.

With all of the hotel staff and surveillance, they can usually source the smoke or small fire incident pretty quickly. If it is more than a very tiny fire (perhaps some paper in an ash tray or something small), they would then ask people to vacate the building. If they investigate and find no problems or something quickly taken care of, the incident is resolved.

When in a hotel here and the alarm goes off, I pretty much go about my business. But I do keep my ears open to any announcements. The hotel will err on the side of caution if at all they feel the building should be vacated.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Running very late this week, but with excellent reason. This issue is jammed with more photos (and links to more photos) than ever before in our history! Staff member Mark “Yes, I really get paid to do this” Jacobs was busy this week staggering up and down The Strip, catching images of the “new” Planet Ho(llywood) inside and out, plus some amazing shots of the progress of MGM CityCenter construction. Speaking of…

Oopps I Did It Again – No… not talking about Britney Spears and her recent (alleged) visit for LipoDissolve here in town. I screwed up some important newsletter links again in the last issue. (Hey… cut us a break. Look at the massive amount of info we crank out each week)! So, for the record, these are the working, valid links: 1. Jubilee! at Bally’s and 2. Online edition of April 11, 2007 newsletter.

Oscar De La Hoya vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. – are the hottest tickets of any kind we’ve seen in nearly a decade. We still have some left and they aren’t cheap, but this isn’t one to miss. Oscar De La Hoya vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. Tickets

New Car Rental Facility – is now open. I talked about it in our February 28, 2007 issue (where it is, tips for getting out of there, etc.) and want to add a couple more tips: If you find yourself with time to kill (checking out early, get to the area of the rental facility early, here is a couple great ways to kill time:

1. One of the area’s biggest outlet malls is 1/2 mile west of the car rental facility at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd. South (the “new” South Strip) and Warm Springs Road and 2. Winchell’s Pub & Grill just across Warm Springs to the south of the rental facility has great food, full bar, and video slots (just like in the casinos). Beats killing extra time at the airport and paying airport prices for food/drink if you are really running early.

Planet Ho(llywood) – has unwittingly branded themselves the permanent name Planet Ho among Vegas insiders, but not for reasons you may suspect. See… they were putting the new sign on top of the hotel the past couple of weeks, and for some reason stopped for a couple of days just when they had reached:

Click for brand new Photos of Planet Hollywood Las Vegas and Miracle Mile (former Desert Passage) Shops and Shows.

2007 American Casino Guide – is still available and worth 10 times the Amazon price of $11.53. In addition to the $1000+ dollars worth of coupons, the book is even worth buying if you may not be visiting a gaming destination between now and the end of the year. Excellent advice on getting best gambling odds and best chances to win on everything from slots to video poker to table games. Order the 2007 American Casino Guide.

Gambling Talk: Playing Small Pairs In Tournaments Playing 9s, 8s, and 7s – with Victor H. Royer. These are the pairs that are traditionally considered to be middle pairs. All of them are highly vulnerable to overcards, and therefore all of them should be played extremely cautiously. In late positions, you can play pocket 9s as if they were pocket 10s, but other than that any of these medium pears are usually a candidate for the muck especially in early and middle positions, and particularly if there has been any kind of action before it becomes your turn to act. Hi Ted,

Your comments regarding the NBA All-Star Game in comparison with NASCAR seem to me to have racial overtones, or at the least a dislike of a sport that is dominated by none white players as opposed to NASCAR?

You say:

“Hello From Las Vegas! Wow, wow, wow… what a past 10 days here in Las Vegas. NASCAR blazed into town with record crowds (unlike the NBA All-Star game, NASCAR produced no shootings or significant arrests)…”

I could be wrong but I really don’t think that the NBA All-Star game produced the shootings or arrests. Could it be that some unsavory people took that opportunity to try and turn a memorable and fun weekend into a tragic one???

I visit Las Vegas often and I have heard of the thousands of gangs that are there… and during one of my many visits, when there were no sporting events taking place, I heard on the news of a day time shooting at the stop-and-go that took place not to far from the Tropicana Hotel and a car jacking that occurred in the underground parking facility of the Fashion Show Mall and don’t forget about the beating of a MGM security guard that made the world news. I could go on… Therefore, please don’t insinuate that a sporting activity is causing violence, when in actuality it’s some unsavory people causing the violence and mayhem.

In closing, I love Las Vegas and I enjoy reading your newsletter about Las Vegas but you really need to leave your unwarranted comments on the editing room floor, or maybe I should just unsubscribe to your newsletter?

Kind Regards,

Angella Moore

Ted Responds:

I’ll already addressed this 5 minutes into my last podcast, but for those who didn’t listen: My anti-NBA feelings preceded the event and had nothing to do with race.

I’m unhappy with any event that brings 5 shootings and over 400 arrests during one weekend. That is unheard of. Even New Years Eve (250,000 very racially diverse visitors) doesn’t even begin to come close.

Comparing sporadic gang violence normal for a city this size (the vast majority of which happens away from The Strip) to the most concentrated number of shootings and arrests ever during one weekend in the tourism area is apples and oranges.

The “Don’t Come Back, NBA” cry was echoed by everyone from the rank-and-file dealers, waitresses, and other service workers as reported by virtually every media outlet here. In fact, the sentiment so so strong that Mayor Oscar Goodman recently submitted a proposal to the NBA for a team here that was sure to get vetoed. Even the mayor who has been groveling for an NBA team for years heard the cry of the entire area: “NBA… Don’t Come Back”.

I challenge anyone to comb the past eight years of the archives of this newsletter and/or the many podcasts I have done and find even anything remotely racist. I celebrate the diversity of our readers and visitors and this is reflected in the stories and photos we run.

I will be coming to Las Vegas in June and would like to know if there are any Jazz Clubs on the South end of the strip. Really enjoy reading your newsletter.

Doris

Ted Responds:

I enjoy both traditional and smooth jazz (a far cry from the rock I was raised on… which I still also enjoy). Events and concerts come and go, so I’m going to simply provide these links to local jazz concerns:

Spamalot Opens Big – The amazingly successful Monty Python show based on the screenplay of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is opening preview performances as we go to press, with the official show opening at the end of the month. John O’Hurley, (J. Peterman on “Seinfeld.” , “Dancing with the Stars” season one champion, “Family Feud” host) leads the cast which includes Nikki Crawford as The Lady of the Lake. We’ll have reports and reviews as things progress, but tickets are available now: Monty Python’s Spamalot Tickets

Stardust To Go Boom – Local TV station KLAS reported just a couple of days ago that the Stardust implosion will be in the early morning of Tuesday March 13. Earlier, the rumored date had been March 12. (Interestingly enough, KLAS pulled the story off their site, but we have the cached link).

Although historically a big deal and advance notice was made of implosions, the crowd and traffic control would get overwhelming. Now, implosions are usually announced only a few hours in advance. If you are going to be in town this coming week, keep your ear to the ground, maybe catch the evening local news both days, and cross your fingers that you get to see it!

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 6 — Luck and Volatility – with Victor H. Royer. The third and final of those points that required a great deal of adjustment for real world poker players making the transition to the Internet tournaments, was the simple fact of the enormously atrocious play that you will find being committed by so many players, and in fact the vast majority of them entering all such tournaments. This is especially so for the small buy-in tournaments, because many are populated by absolute novices and complete amateurs. There is nothing wrong with that, because it is precisely this opportunity that allows many players to begin in this way, and then learn as they go along and progress to a point where they get better. I am getting the impression that Las Vegas is becoming a vacation destination for the rich and famous, and that the average family would not be happy or rather they would be disappointed in a trip there. I thought Vegas was always affordable, but anymore I am thinking Disney is just as cheap. Any comments on the matter would be appreciated.

Thank You

Attention Readers,

I’m going to let you take over this question! Some people find Las Vegas too expensive, and some still find it reasonable compared to other destinations. Some may enjoy bringing their families here while others feel Las Vegas should be 21 and over.

I’ve posted the original question in our message boards here:
Las Vegas: Family Friendly, or For Rich?

Our message boards are once again operating at full speed, so now is a great time to get in and post your thoughts and answers on what you feel is happening to Las Vegas, and if it is a good family vacation!

Hi,

On a recent TV show- the “Hungry Detective” off the strip restaurants such as Ellis island (behind super 8) were featured. He mentioned a discount coupon book that is available at some locations for the asking. We are traveling on a limited budget & would appreciate any coupons/ tips that you can share. Looking forward to visiting in 3 weeks!!!!

Thanks!

Debbie

First I’m going to tell you where to get discount books and stuff, then I’m going to tell you pretty much not to use them, then I’ll tell you about the steak special (which doesn’t need a coupon).

  1. In your room will be one or more free magazines that will have quite a few coupons in it. Also, if you hunt down the “players club booth” in most hotels, they will often have one for the taking.á

  2. By all means use the coupons for things you already were thinking about doing, of that you feel would be very interesting to you. However, don’t get caught in what I call the “coupon trap:”Your time here is very valuable. When you take what you are spending to get here plus the price of a room and food and divide that into the 16 hours a day you won’t be in your room, you are going to find out that you might be spending $10.00 or more per hour just go actually be here.

The Strip is over four miles long, traffic often makes it slow going even if you take the bus (let alone a cab) and you need to think twice about whether it is worth spending valuable time (and money unless you are walking) just getting somewhere to save a few bucks on something that only marginally interest you.

I’ve never talked to anyone who was unhappy that they splurged on something they really wanted to check out here. But I’ve talked to plenty of said “We had a coupon and it was a hassle to get there and it wasn’t that good…”. You get the picture.

  3. Ellis Island has a complete steak dinner for $4.95. It is good. It is off the menu, so you need to ask for it. There is often a 25-45 minute wait at the coffee shop to get in to enjoy it so you have plenty of time to lose money in their casino before you sit down to eat. Still, it is close enough to The Strip to enjoy if you are staying near center strip. Here’s a Google Map to Ellis Island Casino.
