Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! This week, we are going to revisit a theme I briefly touched upon a few weeks ago: If you want the REAL Las Vegas (the one everyone enjoyed a number of years ago with inexpensive room rates, reasonably priced food, and a fair shot at winning some money)… try Fremont Street Downtown!

Important Note: Many long time visitors are very concerned about the “old” vs. “new” Las Vegas. What has changed and why. However, many have a visit planned and simply want to continue to enjoy our newsletter with the latest top Las Vegas information we always offer.

In this issue, we cover plenty of the “old” vs “new” that many readers are demanding. However… for the sake of keeping the newsletter a reasonable length, we will be posting some of that topic online for further review.

Loose Slots, Single Deck Blackjack, 100 Times Odds On Craps, 99% Payback Slot Bank, Full Pay Video Poker – If you’ve been visiting Las Vegas more than five years, the odds are that you saw similar advertisements and signs in various casinos on The Strip and Downtown. Then, Las Vegas got hot. Happening. The hip place to go.á

The Travel Channel seemed like “The Las Vegas Channel” because they showed so many Vegas-related programs. Any news out of Las Vegas made newspapers world-wide. This brought record numbers of new visitors to town.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition – Moving, Memorable & Haunting

by Devon Brooke Clasen

A far cry from the flashy, showy style of so many shows and attractions in Las Vegas,áTitanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Tropicana Resort presents a moving, memorable yet haunting historic survey of the 20th century’s most infamous maritime disaster, showcased in a generously sized 25,000-square-foot retrospective.

Entering the exhibit, each visitor is outfitted with a personal audio device, supplying narrated commentary and facts as well as dramatic readings of historic quotes from figures connected to the ship’s construction.

Additionally, guests are provided with a charming keepsake boarding pass for the RMS Titanic, complete with the name and personal information of an actual passenger, whose fate is to be revealed upon the exhibition’s completion; a clever yet sobering touch to truly personalize the experience.

X Burlesque – Sharp, Sexy, and Entertaining

by Lincoln Hudson

What Happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, as the saying goes. At The Flamingo, nothing could be hotter than the extraordinary 75 minute high octane dance show called ‘X-Burlesque.

Sharp, sexy and very entertaining to the eye, the X-Girls perform in the Second City Theatre displaying a beautiful mixture of both modern dance and the avant-garde. Sexy or adult musical revues seem to be catching on in Vegas these days and this one seems quite happy to be competing alongside Bite and Cirque Du Soleil’s Zumanity.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

My wife and I just returned home from our Vegas trip (6 nights/5 days). We stayed for the first time at the Paris (2 nights) and then 4 nights downtown at Main Street Station. The biggest change we noticed was the lack of people.á

I know it was the 4th of July week, but the ‘people’ traffic was much less than before. We asked a floor person at MSS about traffic and she too said the size of the crowds were much smaller than they use to be. My guess as well as hers was, ‘all about the cost of gas’.

I think the casinos are helping their bottom line by making slots much tighter, just as the airlines are charging for suitcases and giving less service. It may be time to re-think our Vegas trips. Enjoy your weekly publication.

Pleasant Garden, NC

Ted Responds:

I agree with you: The gaming properties tried to squeeze tourists too hard during the good times, and it is biting them back during the bad times.

For decades, people would go through hell and high water to get to Las Vegas regardless of the economy. They knew the reward would be reasonably priced rooms and food, plus a fair chance at winning some money.

It is a rude awakening for many in hotel/casino management, many whom have never been here long enough to see a downturn and thought the “gravy train” of the past few years was the norm.

My prediction? Everyone will finally see a return to some of the “old Vegas” way of doing things that attracted so many for so long.

Since reviewing things on your site as well as others, itÆs apparent that Las Vegas is experiencing a slow down in economy. Gambled money and room occupancy is down, even our paper has reported it in the Sunday travel section. My suggestion is to have the city and casinoÆs work in conjunction with the airlines to help lower the cost of flights in and out of Las Vegas.

My wife and I travel on the average 4 times a year to L.V., being that we gamble a lot, Hooters has ôcompedö us for each stay. The travel is whatÆs costing us and preventing us from going more then 2 times this year so far. An example of price fares form Cleveland to L.V. via Continental airlines û In April it was $ 198. round trip ; in May it was $ 218. round trip; now the cheapest we can travel is $ 438. round trip.

I know airlines are taking a beating on fuel cost, but if the city and casinoÆs can work with the airlines to help subsidize travel I would bet that more people would come out and reverse the decline in gambling revenue and room occupancy. ItÆs just a suggestion, for a 4day û 3 night trip we generally add $ 1,500. to the L.V. economy via gambling; food; drinks; and misc spending. Thank you for your time to review my request,

John M. Kacvinsky

á

Ted Responds:

Interesting thoughts. Actually, the hotels are starting to “subsidize” the cost of the flights by slashing their room rates. You end up paying more for your flight, but less for rooms.

I realize that doesn’t help those like you who gamble enough to get your stay comped. For those of you who do play enough to get free rooms, I’d strongly suggest writing the hotel you give your action to and simply tell them “Hey… we come and gamble a lot of money, but airfare is killing us and a free room just doesn’t make it worth coming out. Is there any way players at are level can get something like a rebate on our airfare, extra free play, or meals?”

Per the city or casinos subsidizing flights:

Blue Man Group at Venetian Las Vegas

Reviewed May 2006
by Nancy Hruska

blue man group venetian las vegas hotels showsWhy are the people in the front row wearing plastic covering over their clothes? Why is there an oversized DNA strand on stage? What are those brass figures in each corner of the showroom? These peculiar embellishments aren’t often found in top of the line Vegas entertainment so curiosity is peaked by even the most sedated audience members.

Far before the world renowned Blue Man Group show’s curtain slides, those waiting for God only knows what, share the same questioning cocked head…what in the world?…what on earth are they going to do with that? And this disorientation, this vacation from the norm, is exactly what the show celebrates: curiosity, experimentation, and the human condition. These three endearing blue men explore the world through witty comical and even thoughtful outbursts that can’t help but capture the hearts of everyone. Click to Read Complete Review

IN-ROOM COMPUTERS – As noted in our recent newsletter highlighting the Aladdin opening (archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-08-23.htm ), the Aladdin is in the process of placing computers in every room which will allow guests to surf the web with high-speed access. Other resorts are looking to follow suit, an acknowledgment that the internet is now getting as important to many of us as phone service. FEATURE STORY: Le Village Buffet

Le Village Buffet at the Paris Las Vegas hotel is a unique dining experience, both in atmosphere and food. Similar to Bellagio, it features an almost park-like setting nicely broken up as opposed to the typical “warehouse” feel of most buffets. Similar to both Bellagio and the new Aladdin buffet, it features a significant variety of top quality food, much of which is cooked and watched over by chefs at each dining station.

Because the food is so rich and unique, I’ve decided to list a sample dinner menu instead of doing a review. If you like the following fare, you’ll enjoy dining at Le Village Buffet and find it well worth the upscale price:

DINNER MENU:

SEAFOOD BOUIILABAISE
ROAST DUCKLING WITH GREEN OLIVES
VEGETABLE RATATOLJILLE NICOISE
CHICKEN FRICASSE WITH RIESL1NG WINE
SCALLOPED POTATOES
BRAISED HOMEMADE SAUSAGE
SALMON, GREEN CABBAGE AND BEURRE BLANC
ChAMPAGNE BRAISED SAUERKRAUT
VENISON STEW WITH GLAZED ONIONS
GRILLED PORK CHOPS WITH ONION MARMALADE
ROASTED PIT HAM AND BLACK CURRANT SAUCE
ROASTED RIB EVE AND BEAUJOLAIS SAUCE

BEEF BOIJRGOUIGNON
SHRIMP SALAD
MONTE CARL0 SALAD
SAUTEED SHRIMP WITH SHALLOTS
STEAMED MUSSELS POULETTE
DOVER SOLE WITH ROCK SHRIMP
SPINACH AU GRATIIN
SAUTEED TUNA TOITRNEDOS AND CREAMY LEEKS

FRESH PREPARED CREPES
SMOKED SALMON, SMOKED TUNA AND SMOKED SADLE
FRENCH ONION SOUP
WILD MUSHROOM BISQUE
KING CRAB LEGS

ASSORTED BRIE AND GRUYERE CHEESE
FRIPLE CHOCOLATE TERRINE
BISCUIT DE SAVOIE WITH VANILLA SAUCE
OPERA CAKE

Le Village Buffet is located in Paris Las Vegas and open for breakfast ($10.95), lunch ($14.95), and dinner ($23.50). Reservations are not accepted, but instead of making you wait in a long line, when they are busy they assign you a time window (15 minutes long, i.e., 8:30 – 8:45 PM) in which to return and dine. Go an hour or more in advance of the time you wish to dine to secure your spot on the list.

Thanks for the kind words! I encourage reader feedback and comments at allvegastv@aol.com whether good or bad, because I’m wasting my time if I’m not meeting the needs of you readers. If I had a dollar for every piece of misinformation I’ve ever overheard Vegas tourists telling each other, I could have retired long ago. This newsletter was created so that won’t happen to you!

You ARE being marketed to, BUT we are trying to be gentle. I don’t like the “hard sell” and I like getting the best deal, which is why I was very careful in teaming up with Hotel Reservations Network for rooms ( http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm ) and TravelNow for rental cars ( http://www.travelnow.com/cars/search.jsp?cid=2005 ). Both let you enter the dates of travel and then display all the prices so you can compare and save. In addition, Hotel Reservations Network has extended the $25 rebate (which is on top of their guaranteed low rates) indefinitely, letting you save even more!

Unlike many Vegas publications which depend on direct casino advertising, we get our standard booking commission no matter which hotel or car agency you choose. No favorites, no BS. If something stinks, it stinks and we are going to mention it and save you the trouble!

I do have a small favor to ask of all readers: If you enjoy any part of this newsletter on a regular basis and you aren’t booking with us, go check the rates the way you usually book for your next trip and then give us a try at the links mentioned at the top of every newsletter.

If we aren’t the low rate that time around, by all means book elsewhere. But if we meet or beat your other source, please consider showing your support by giving us a try. People book tens of thousands of room/nights each year through us because of the one click compare, low prices, secure servers, and instant confirmation. There is no cost or obligation and you are completely anonymous until when and if you decide to book. Thanks in advance!

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

BELLAGIO RESTAURANTS – Did you know that the restaurants at Bellagio serve up to 25,000 meals a day and it is the only hotel in the US with two 5 star restaurants? And unlike many casinos, the restaurants there actually turn a profit. Great story at http://starbulletin.com/2000/04/05/features/story2.html

SPORTS BETTING BAN – Now the NFL and the NBA are jumping on the bandwagon to get Congress to ban all sports betting nationally. Obviously, we are a bit biased on this. Nevada has the most stringent gaming regulation in the world. The Gaming Control Board takes all complaints seriously, and often you can summons an officer down to mediate a dispute almost immediately. Sports betting is already outlawed in virtually every state (in part or full) and far more is wagered outside Nevada than in-state. SUPER CASINO – “Inside the ‘New” Las Vegas” is a great account of the modern day Las Vegas. Often dense with historical fact, but neatly interrupted by fascinating first-person accounts: an old-time dealer talks about being threatened by Frank Sinatra, a hotel manager at a casino gets chewed out by her boss for renting out a $5,000 room to movie stars, and more. FEATURE STORY: The Exhibition by guest columnist David Berman

During our stay at the Rio, we immersed ourselves in the recounting of an event that happened on April 14, 1912. The event, of course, is the sinking of the Titanic on her maiden voyage, and the recounting is Titanic: The Exhibition, in The RioÆs mezzanine-level exhibit space.

IÆve seen many bulletin-board and newslist posts asking if anyone had seen the Titanic exhibit, and seeking opinions about the value of spending $15.95 to view it. Read on and decide for yourself, because the answer is not as simple as you might imagine.

The show is beautifully staged, occupying much of the same space used for the Treasures of Russia exhibit that was such a huge success. A key ingredient in the Titanic exhibit working as well as it does is the professionally narrated, recorded guided tour, which is included in the admission price. Visitors entering the exhibit are given a cassette recorder, with the narrator explaining the items as you proceed through the collection and directing you in such maneuvers as ônow turn to your left,ö and ôpause to study the recovered artifacts in this cabinet.ö The green button plays the tape, and the red button stops it if you want to linger along the way. The narration incorporates a musical score, and also employs the voices of actual Titanic survivors as well as actors speaking as some of the specific passengers and shipÆs officers. Most of the tape is in stereo, and it works very well.

Recovered items, including dinnerware, jewelry, shaving brushes, coins and personal letters, bring the incredible tragedy to life. But just as the re-creations of the palace rooms of the czars were the highlight of Treasures of Russia, the re-creations of TitanicÆs famous Grand Staircase, its first-class passageways and staterooms and card room, as well as a second-class bunk-style room, are what combine to put a face on the ship and its occupants.

If you visit the Titanic exhibit, one of your most dramatic moments will come when you enter a room dominated by a large block of ice intended to simulate the exposed surface of an iceberg, which you are encouraged to touch. ôNo one could survive longer than 10 minutes in the North Atlantic waters of that evening,ö the narrator intones, and suddenly the reality of collision, darkness and death is brought home to you.

Now for the big question: Is Titanic: The Exhibition worth attending?

Not necessarily. If you are a rabid fan or student of the Titanic story and have not previously attended any of the other Titanic exhibits touring around the world, or if you canÆt get enough of the film ôTitanicö and Celine DionÆs promise that the heart will go on, then by all means go see it. You will be happy you did, because it will add a little to your knowledge base.

My wife Rosalyn and I did get something out of this show, but we both agreed that we left it feeling a bit let down, in the way you might if you were hungry after eating a delicious gourmet dinner whose portions were too small.

More than 5,000 artifacts have been recovered from the Titanic wreck site, but only about 200 are on display at The Rio. In short, what is shown is presented very effectively, but there is simply not enough of it. In part this is understandable, because the recovered items are supporting many Titanic exhibits around the world. At first, the overall effect fools you, but then you begin to notice that each exhibit room throughout the presentation is furnished with just one or two display cases holding a small number of artifacts, along with a few wall hangings.

The Titanic exhibit is in residence indefinitely, which will allow the show to be changed from time to time as items from other Titanic exhibits are rotated. But this does little for Las Vegas visitors who are unlikely to see the display more than once.

Moving methodically through the Titanic exhibit, following the narrative and stopping the tape a few times to linger, took us only 50 minutes, making the attraction an attention-holder for adults and children alike. I mentioned above that the cost is $15.95, but we were able to reduce this to $12.95 with a discount coupon available at the registration desk. Cost for children under 14 is $9.95.

Thanksgiving weekend is second only to New Years Eve and ranks right up there with Memorial Day and Labor day as far as tourist traffic here in town. The shows will all be in full swing (although you should always check with each show to see what night they are dark each week). Just about every restaurant in every casino serves some type of Thanksgiving meal. In fact, it’s often a set menu with 2 or 3 holiday choices (besides the normal menu items). The Harrah’s rooms I have seen are pretty nice for the money. When you get back, let us know how they compare to the rooms at The Golden Nugget.
