Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Starting next week, we move to publishing this newsletter weekly, in the mid-week to help get you through those mid-week blues at work.

Amy Raynor-Cooley is stepping into the position of doing all the newsletter prep and editing (she already has been playing a significant roll) and Mark Jacobs (yes, that is his name… no relation to the Marc Jacobs stores) is taking over sifting through the huge amounts of news sources we monitor and link to each week so we bring you just the news of interests to tourists or people with second homes here.

I’m not going anywhere! I’ll still be the last person to touch the newsletter before it goes out, be doing final edits (seeing how many typos I can slip in), and have Newkirk’s Notes.

I’ll also be supervising a significant expansion in the content of Access Vegas, a couple of brand extensions, working more closely with the hotel/resort properties to bring you more deals and contests/giveaway (yeah)! Plus, I really want to get back to the podcast. That was a lot of fun. So… as the saying goes: You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

Capozzoli’s burned down. Who, what? Capozzoli’s was a legendary Italian restaurant near The Strip on Desert Inn and a hang-out for the who’s who of wise guys and “wanna be” wise guys over the years. You could walk in there at 4 in the morning and get an incredible, full meal with great food and service back in the day.

The past decade often saw Tom Jones (with friend Cook E. Jarr) in there dining, drinking, and crooning with the house band until sunrise. Here’s the story (includes streaming video): Long-time Italian restaurant Capozzoli’s burns to the ground

Ray Livosi as Frank Sinatra and Art Poco as Dean Martin toast the town… Or are they the toast of the town? Anyhow, they’ve been up all night after performing their act, “Frank & Dean – Together Again”.

First, I think you have a great news letter.

I just finished reading this weeks news and saw an article about a strike. When is this suppose to happen? I have reservations for Main Street next month.

Thank you a response,

Susan

Ted Responds:

Odds of a strike are slim to none. We have not had a major strike since the Frontier Strike of the early 90’s. Most Strip resorts have already signed new contracts and it is expected that every property will come to a new labor agreement.

If you do have some concern (anything can happen), you may want to cancel. However… consider that someone is always talking of striking. Airline people, you name it. The odds of it affecting one particular person’s vacation anywhere are minimal. Employees prefer to keep working until a new accord is reached.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Happy Birthday to me, celebrating my 41’s wild ride around the sun from the real sunshine state of Nevada. Spending it with you as we have an unusually large amount of late-breaking and important Las Vegas information you need to know!

Did you know that Halloween is a State Holiday here in Nevada? No, it’s not to honor “Sin City” as one would think. October 31 is Statehood Day, and schools and state government have the day off. It is also a great night to be out on the Las Vegas strip as many visitors are on costume, and many of the nightspots are doing special events.

Apologies to those who had a hard time getting through to our message boards to read or post comments about the possible Nevada smoking ban. Our ancient software and servers are struggling under the weight of our explosive growth, and we are putting in an entire new system to handle it at the end of the year. You can get through now, but some pages on our site might take a few seconds to load for the next couple of months. Thanks in advance for your patience.

To those who missed the comments (or haven’t heard about the story), here are the links:

The monorail continues to tank. Originally, it was blamed on the rough start (mechanical problems that kept it shut down for weeks at a time), but now they have to face the music: The high price, non-service to the airport, and inconvenient route make it unattractive to most.

Many ask if a bus route serves The Strip from the airport. Yes and no. There is no one-bus service (and there should be). You can grab a bus at the airport (Route 108) south from the Airport for a five minute ride to a transit station, where you can catch The Deuce double decker buses that run The Strip.

However, your time is valuable when you factor in what you spent on air and hotel just to get here. If cost is an issue, catch one of the shuttle services for about $5.00 a person. Shuttle info and stops are well marked in the baggage area at the airport.

Always happy to hear that we help our readers have a great time while in Las Vegas, especially for celebrating big birthdays and other fun life events! One of the best “bangs for the buck” is to rent a limo, either for your ride from the airport to your hotel, or to live it riding all up and down The Strip seeing the sights. Probably the best splurge in town!

I kind of jumped the gun by starting them this year at a time when we are expanding our core product.

The plan is to re-launch it later this year as a shorter weekly program. Outside of listing it in iTunes, we have done absolutely no promotion for the show and still consider it in beta stages.

We do appreciate all the great feedback from listeners, and I’m looking forward to bringing it back at full strength after the first of the year!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It has been a busy week, seeing David Copperfield, Frank Sinatra, Jr., a Sunday trip out to Hoover Dam and Monday Night Football at the Hard Rock. Sinatra was fantastic, our Copperfield and Hard Rock football reviews are in this issue.

The weather has been stunning with highs in the mid-80’s and cool evenings that don’t get cold. I put the Rams/Raiders game on the car radio (my Raiders finally suffered a loss), put on the sun glasses, put down the car windows, and headed out to Hoover Dam on Sunday. Although a security checkpoint for cars, they wave most people through and the lack of truck traffic has made it easier and quicker to get to the dam. We’ll have that story soon.

We’ll be mentioning the Las Vegas Calendars for charity every couple of weeks until the end of the year. No excuses — these quality big photo calendars are only $5 including shipping with proceeds going to a great cause. We will not rest until every reader gets one!

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Hard Rock Football – The Joint at the Hard Rock was truly rocking this past Monday night for the Seahawks/49’ers game! Outside of the various parties held at local strip clubs, this is possibly the sexiest Monday Night Football (MNF) party in town. This is probably also your cheapest chance to check out the venue that has hosted The Stones, The Who, The Eagles and a laundry list of classic and modern rock shows.

Admission is free, and three huge screens show the game with the Michaels/Madden commentary and sound played over the concert quality sound system. Music is played during the commercials with scantily clad go-go girls dancing throughout the venue. Appetizers are available ($3-6) along with $1.50 Bud or Bud Light drafts to wash them down.

The event is always sponsored by a local radio station and not only draws plenty of locals, but a surprising number of women for a MNF event. While the Hard Rock is the place to see and be seen, this is serious football with plenty of loud cheering for both sides. Remember that MNF starts at 6 PM Pacific Time.

Club Rubber Halloween Costume Ball – Club Rubber and the N9NE Group presents a wicked party for the over 21 crowd. Costumes are mandatory.

  • Where: Rain in the Desert at the Palms
  • When: Oct. 31 at 9 p.m.
  • How Much: $25 (Women) $30 (Men)

Halloween Bingo Bash – Palms Casino Resort will host a special Halloween Bingo Bash on October 31 including cash giveaways.

Calendar For Charity – Now is the time to get a 2003 Las Vegas calendar and help a good cause. These are the same high quality Las Vegas calendars you find in hotels and gift shops at or below the gift shop price with all proceeds going to charity. See the beautiful photos and purchase info atá 2003 Las Vegas Calendar.

Screamers Haunted House – is in the fourth year in operation. Designed and built by some of Las Vegas’ top scenic designers and illusion builders for the big shows here in town. Click for details on this fun magic-based fright experience!

Best Magic Show – You still have time to vote for your favorite Las Vegas magician in our “Best Of’ poll. Simply head to the main page of AccessVegas.Com and vote. For those wondering the ommission of a deserving David Copperfield (who spends about half the year playing Las Vegas), this time around we only included magicians who regularly headline their own show here year around.

Showroom Cancer Survivor – Our friend Larry G. Jones with the great free show at Fitzgerald’s recently got a nice write-up in the local paper regarding his show and earlier battle with cancer.

If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows,á tours, and golf through AccessVegas.Com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

Show Review: David Copperfield – Portal

Note: David Copperfield just finished a brief run at the MGM but returns at the end of the month to play Oct 31. – Nov. 6 and again Dec. 24 – Jan. 1. Due to the popularity of this show and high ticket demand, you may wish to reserve your seats as far in advance as possible.

I’d like to call David Copperfield a living legend. If you are old enough to gamble you have seen him do everything from walk through the Great Wall of China to make the Statue of Liberty vanish on his famous television specials. However, I won’t. “Living Legend” sometimes connotes a a respected performer, past their prime, churning it out for the buck. Mr. Copperfield is still very much at the top of his game.

He’s either a great actor or still loves what he is doing (probably a bit of both) because from the minute he hits the stage, he’s having fun and that makes you want to like him. He could be a nobody just starting out and you would like him. But he gets right into it with an illusion that has him floating upwards through a plate of steel.

GOLDEN GATE STRIKE – has been settled. All Las Vegas union hotels have signed five year contracts.

BIG WINNER – Speaking of downtown, a Hawaii resident (who declined to release their identity) was staying at the California Hotel and headed over to Main St. Station to play the slots. With only $2 invested, they hit for $2,190,306.20 on Wheel of Fortune! I’m thinking they flew back home first class … you could be next. Main St. Station is a block off the Fremont St. Experience but one of the nicest properties downtown and well worth the visit.

99 CENT BREAKFAST – isn’t quite a thing of the past yet. Nevada Palace Casino (just south of Sam’s Town on Boulder Highway) is offering 2 eggs, hash browns, 2 bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit and coffee for only 99 cents Sunday night through Friday mornings, 11 PM to 6 AM. They also have $1 blackjack and Single 0 Dime Roulette (10 cent roulette) every day. We have info on all “Boulder Strip” hotels including Nevada Palace at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotel-reservations-valley.htm

Plans call for a rail line to the site that runs far outside the Vegas Valley. The repository 90 miles northwest of town. Truck shipments will be transferred to rail far away from this area.

SHOW REVIEW:

Mystere by Cirque du Soleil – December, 1993. Treasure Island Las Vegas. A city still best known for cheap buffets and cheap rooms. No Mandalay Bay, no Bellagio, no Venetian, no Paris Las Vegas. Cirque du Soleil was popular in art and theatre circles but few in regular walks of life were familiar with the French Canadian company and their unique brand of human-based circus theatre. Boy, did that all change!

Almost a decade later, Mystere is still one of the hottest shows on the Las Vegas Strip and with great reason. This troupe of highly skilled athletic actors combine drama, rhythmic music, and fantastic feats that devy gravity.

The “Aerial Cube” features Paul Bowler suspended high above, spinning in a glistening steel cube at amazing heights. In the “Chinese Poles,” highly costumed performers use amazing muscular strength and control to mimic what may be insects on stalks of grass or wheat. They cling to, climb, and spring between the poles in superhuman fashion using only their own power and balance.

Marco and Paul Larador (brothers from Portugal) perform “Hand To Hand.” This strength and balancing act done on a rotating dome must be seen to be believed. But just when you feel you can’t be more amazed, “Bungee” takes center stage. Six performers suspended high above spring deep from trapezes in an amazing choreographed routine.

Other segments include the traditional circus act “Korean Plank” performed in a new and more complex way, the “Aerial High Bar” (a gymnastics inspired swinging high bar routine), and the “Trampoline and Fast Track” where a huge winged trampoline set let’s performers fly sideways between upright trampolines.

So save some cash and catch Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey next time they hit your town, right? WRONG. The circus style acts are performed in a custom theatre with amazing costume, masks, color, and original live music that pulls at every sense and emotion. These acts just help paint part of a bigger canvas.

We are escorted through the show by a nontraditional clown. His disdain for the hoopla and childlike mischief (set off by the appearance of being an aged character) provide both comic relief and provoking thought. Babies (actors playing them) take us to the innocence and simplicity and hope for a bright tomorrow. Mysterious creatures remind us of childhood dreams, fantasies, and bedtime stories.

Mystere has earned worldwide respect and will leave you with lasting memories. This show was continually voted the best in Las Vegas until sister show “0” opened at Bellagio. Even then, it is well within the top five and a highlight of a Las Vegas trip.

Mystere by Cirque du Soleil plays Wednesday – Sunday at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino. Tickets are $80.00 plus tax and may be purchased up to three months in advance by clicking here: MystÞre by Cirque du Soleil
