Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! The Tropicana may or may not be a victim of an implosion later on this year, but Dirk Arthur is celebrating his one year anniversary there with no signs of letting up. Catch it while you can! Who would have thought that Barry Manilow would have a #1 selling CD? And the only place to see him is Las Vegas! We’ve got a great, free audio clip from our Gaming Expert Victor H. Royer in this issue, filling you on on how to win.

After a few cold and windy days (including some light rain last Sunday), the week ahead is looking good with highs in the 70’s!

Limos Are Hot and I mean red hot. I was sifting through some of the reservations we’ve taken just today, and you would be surprised at how many are flying on on Southwest or Allegiant or similar discount airline, then kicking off your vacation with a limo ride from the airport to your hotel.

An airline seat is an airline seat, but nothing rocks your vacation from the very first minute like being whisked away in a limo, and the grand entrance you make at the hotel is priceless! The cost? Not much more than a cab. Seriously. Click to check our our limo rates and see for yourself!

Last Chance To Win the book Powerful Profits At Internet Poker by our gaming expert Victor H. Royer. If you are new to internet poker, interested in it, or playing and not getting the results you want, you need this book. And we are giving away five copies! Enter Drawing For Powerful Profits From Internet Poker. We also have a link to a free 14 minute expert audio segment on this topic later in the newsletter.

Insider Vibe Broadcast/Podcast returns next week! We accomplished significant upgrades to handle the demand to listen, and I’m looking forward to being back “on the air!”

Enjoy This Issue!

Dear Ted, I’ve just got back from a 7 night vacation in Las Vegas today (Fri) and miss it already. I only lost $10 overall so I’m pleased. I stayed at the Stardust and was very sad to find this magnificent piece of LV history is to die at the end of 2006 – Is there some way to save it and incorporate the main West Tower into the new complex and save the beautiful name?.

Anyway my fave place was off strip – The Rio. It’s floor show in the afternoon is second to none with photo opportunities too – extremely professional and fun too. Long live The Rio. Also what few people in my group realized that some of the best eating establishments are off strip, esp. the Gold Coast Buffet – What a choice – lunchtime buffet only $7.45 – I came out rather heavier than I went in. – Any surveys you run please include me so I can rate the best of Beautiful Las Vegas. Ted keep up the good work.

Regards – Owen (South Shields, England)

Ted Responds – Owen, glad you had such a great time! I’m thrilled and flattered by our friends around the world who love Las Vegas, travel so far to see us, and enjoy our information. Because of the scope of the size of the Stardust replacement, the building will come down. But Radio.AccessVegas.com listeners know that I am no fan of the replacement name “Echelon Place”. At the very least, it would be nice if part of the new complex kept some of the Stardust name. Thanks for writing!

Wynn Las Vegas Opens – The most anticipated casino opening in the history of Las Vegas took place this week!

Wynn-ing On A Budget – Even regular Vegas visitors might not have ventured north of The Venetian in years. Older resort properties were bypassed to see all the new South Strip resorts built during the past decade.

However … The opening of Wynn Las Vegas squarely moves the focus of “hot” back to the north. If you want to stay close to Wynn Las Vegas but you aren’t on a Steve Wynn budget, refresh yourselves with these established favorites. The following lodging choices are all within a comfortable walk of the new Wynn resort:

Attention Monorail Riders: You can see Wynn Las Vegas from the monorail, but no stop is close. Get off at Harrah’s and enjoy the walk past The Venetian.

Show NotesAnthony Cools The Uncensored Hypnotist has resurfaced at Paris Las Vegas, new dates are on sale for Barry Manilow (who is drawing great reviews), Forever Plaid is well worth the quick trip over to the Gold Coast (next to The Rio), and Hawaii’s Society of Seven is thriving with the addition of Lani Misalucha.

If you miss 80’s and 90’s rock/metal the trashy styles on sexy women, Erocktica is drawing one of the wildest crowds in town at The Rio. (Word is that the women in the crowd often get more wild than the women on stage)! On another adult note, Bite is the new erotic and sensual topless show at The Stratosphere.

Cousin Vinnie and the Ba-Da-Bing gang are inviting you to an evening that roars only with good fund, good music and an atmosphere that recaptures an era at the new Speakeasy Cabaret at Ba-Da-Bing at the legendary Stardust. And true to form, the gang’s all here. Cousin Vinnie and the flapper’s, dolls, goombas and gangsters.

Hey, what’s it a little ba-da-bang-bang between friends? We’re shootin’ from the “hip” and believe it when we tell you that this is the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights. You can dance to the sounds of Karin Denise and the Sin City Boyz Show Band, enjoy easy conversation with friends, meet cousin Vinnie and the Ba-Da-Bing gang, and enjoy an alcoholic beverage or two (no Prohibition here!). Cousin Vinnie says: “Be dere or else!” Click for Speakeasy Cabaret at Ba-da-Bing info.

Crazy Girls Showgirl Controversy Puts Riviera On The Map – After 18 years it’s a household name: Makes history as “LV’s Sexiest Topless Revue”

Norbert Aleman, creator and producer of “Crazy Girls,” said, “‘Crazy Girls’ and ‘La Cage’ are the backbone of the Riviera’s entertainment. I began at the Riviera with a 12-week engagement and here we are 18-20 years later. I was told that we would never survive and we faced controversies with the National Organization of Women, Las Vegas City Hall and a powerful state senator and we survived it all. Public opinion was very supportive and we are still here. During the early to mid-’90s ‘Crazy Girls’ was the only show of its type and now there are nine copies of the show in Las Vegas.”

Norbert continued, “When the show began in 1987 we had a predominately male audience and bachelor parties and now it’s Middle America with half couples some women and some men in small groups. That’s how the mores of America are changing. The show has gained wide acceptance. Now the taboo is the (gentleman’s) clubs while the ‘Crazy Girls’ appeals to most adults.”

It all began at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. At 18 years, “Crazy Girls” is the longest running topless cabaret in the history of Las Vegas!

Megabucks Will Be World Record – Nevada Megabucks is currently at $34,955,600 and will continue to increase until someone wins it. That lucky person will also become part of history in the next edition of The Guinness Book of Records. Read More …

Fire Safety – In light of the tragic Rhode Island fire, many wonder how safe entertainment activities are. Especially in Las Vegas where many production shows use pyro and so many concerts and events roll through town. Clark County (Las Vegas) has 35 inspectors handling the roughly 200 special events that apply for the use of pyrotechnics. Paperwork is filled out weeks in advance and inspectors preview all effects. The depth of the staff insures that someone is on hand no matter what time of day an event happens.

Boogity, Boogity, Boogity – NASCAR’s UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 invades the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend and the event has been sold out for weeks. No ticket? Stuck home? Note the 11:30 AM Pacific start time and tune to your local Fox station. The best way to get to the race? Take the Cat Ride Race Shuttle (run by our local public bus service). This is the only way to go, as these busses use special routes that get you to the speedway in 45 minutes. I’m rooting for home-town boy #97 but the #2 is a sentimental favorite.

Rio Abrupt Cocktail Change – When the Rio opened, it was famous for beautiful, young cocktail waitresses in outfits that weren’t much more than a one-piece thong swimsuit. Now they are scrapping the entire cocktail staff to hire drink servers who will perform singing and dancing choreographed routines throughout the gaming area.

Some feel this is a way to get rid of cocktail waitresses who may not look at good in the skimpy outfits as they did a decade ago. Others see it as part of a bigger world-wide resort trend toward performing bartenders and waitresses. You can read The Rio’s press release and let us know what you think in our Rio Replaces Cocktail Servers forum. Think this will fly? Sound like a good change or will you miss the current waitresses? Let us know!

Ticket Advice – We often get asked how to get tickets to the very popular shows like “O”, Mystere, Siegfried and Roy, Blue Man Group, and Danny Gans. Yes we have them (at face value). Yes, they go very quickly. The key is to buy well in advance, but keep this in mind: some tickets are not released for sale more than three months ahead.

Our advice? Once your travel dates are set in stone, visit our Las Vegas Shows page and check availability. If that hard-to-get show has tickets available, buy them. If not available yet, keep checking back every few days and specifically 85-90 days before your visit. Most Las Vegas shows are now reserved seating, so even if you aren’t trying for a tough ticket, buying in advance often insures better seats.

Cook E. Ain’t No Rookie – Infamous club and lounge performer Cook E. Jarr is back at his Harrah’s Carnival Court gig midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Cook’s 30’th birthday is probably a couple decades behind him, but his audience keeps getting younger. We were at the outdoor venue Friday night as he played to a packed bar area and ripped through both “old school” and recent dance and R & B favorites in his inimitable style.

The dance floor was packed and while the crowd skews younger, no age group is out of place. With the weather warming up, Cook E. Jarr is a party worth checking out. Plus, the Carnival Court bartenders are some of the better “flair” bartenders around. Check out our Cook E. Jarr Carnival Court photo section.

$5000 Palms Bingo Cash Giveaway – The Key West room at the Palms Resort offers bingo every Thursday: March 6,13, 20 and 27. Session times are 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Palms bingo players will receive an entry at each March session to win part of a $5,000 cash giveaway. The drawings for the $5,000 cash giveaway will be held at every session on Thursday, March 27, yielding 28 lucky winners. Read More …

Featured Review: Dirk Arthur: The New Art of Magic

If Dirk Arthur’s name rings a bell, you may have seen the Bally’s Marquee over the past decade. Dirk was a featured act in Jubilee! and had his name in lights on the Las Vegas Strip. I’d seen him in the show, and he is good. His move to headlining status at The Silverton left people wondering if he could carry a show by himself and others wondering where The Silverton was!In an era with more shows than ever, trying their luck in just about every location and hotel you can try a show, it appears that Arthur’s gamble paid off. The Silverton’s showroom isn’t a converted lounge, but a full-sized, comfortable venue holding perhaps 400-500 people (my guess) and Dirk is filling it up on a consistent basis.

The show is aptly named The New Art Of Magic because Dirk’s specialties are huge scale illusions, the kind you often see with Lance Burton or David Copperfield. He levitates a Lamborghini and makes it vanish in mid-air. He puts a twist on the “saw the lady in half” by cutting her into nine pieces. He has an industrial size drill pierce right through him. I love the new format! I’ve enjoyed reading your newsletter for a while now, and I always love getting the scoop on my favorite city. Even though I don’t have a trip in the planning (at the moment, but I’m always hoping!), I can always count on you for some great info! Thanks!

The new look your newsletter is sporting is great! Thanks for all the helpful information. Each trip to Las Vegas, we arrive better informed than the trip before!

I want to thank everyone for the nice words and great response to our spruced up format. Same great info, same “tell it like it is” philosophy, but with a little more visual spice to bring Las Vegas to you!

I don’t think kids belong in Las Vegas. Its an adult city, Alcohol, parties, gambling, adult entertainment… I would never bring kids to Las Vegas… I wish other people wouldn’t either. Take your kids to Disney, not Las Vegas… Let us adults have fun, an enjoy ourselves.

Readers, what do you think? Do you take your kids to Las Vegas or do you see it as an adult destination? Tell us your thoughts and experiences in our Kids In Las Vegas forum.

I have to agree with the poll, on the locals casinos, in the recent newsletter. About two months ago we visited the Gold Coast. How or why we went there I don’t know but we were pleasantly surprised. I had been in the Gold Coast a number of years ago ( a whole story in itself) and thought it to be rather shabby. We ate at the buffet, played for a number of hours and really enjoyed ourselves. It certainly didn’t hurt that I hit a royal.

If anyone missed it, go check out the poll results.

Richard and Barbara Paro wrote:

I just want to start off saying I love, love, love your news letter. I’ve only been getting it for a couple of months. I have two questions. One is on comped rooms. We are coming to Vegas in Nov. and are staying at the (name of casino withheld). We have been there before 2 times.

We get our room comped for three nights. We spend anywhere from a thousand to fifteen hundred a day. That’s our money not what we win in between. We would like to go to other places to see some of the things you talk about, and see if we could win at other casinos but feel obligated to spend our time and money where we get comped. How can we do both, and how much do we have to spend to still get comped?

Comps are the big question and source of confusion here in Las Vegas. I withheld the name of the casino involved here not because of any problems, but because this is a general issue.

First of all, casinos aren’t comping you because they are “nice guys.” They are comping you because they realize you will lose more than your comps cost them over time. Think about this: In return for giving you a room that probably would have gone empty and costs them a few bucks a day to maintain, you are giving them heavy play and not even leaving the place. That is no way to enjoy Las Vegas!

You have a number of options. One is to split your play on your next visit between this casino and another two or three that you are interested in. The odds are that the first casino won’t cut your free nights right away. If you were to visit time and time again and not gamble much there, then they would probably pull back the comp offers.

Play at other places and see if you win, and if they offer you anything. Or come to town and take $50-100 of that daily gambling budget and buy a room so you don’t feel obligated and you can go test the waters elsewhere.

Another new option that many take advantage of is the ability to see right away online what casinos are giving away what comps for what level of play. Playsis lets you enter the amount of your bet, how long you play, and they will offer you a comp level at various hotels right up front. No phone calls, no negotiating, no hoping that “Vinnie” at the casino will smile down upon you. So you might want to check out Playsis.

Glad to here you are not tiring of Vegas anytime soon. Hope to retire there some day. Not a gambler, but love the weather, mountains and the mystery of the dessert.

Look forward to your newsletters, keep up the informative mailings. Visit often, but for different reasons. Enjoy driving up to Mt Charleston, or to Red Rock Canyon. Even a trip to a local Wal-Mart with the beautiful Mountain setting behind, something you cannot experience in our town of Hebron, Illinois.

I could not agree with you more. I too like to see an area when I travel, and not just the resort areas. There is so much more to do here than gambling! Mt. Charleston and Red Rock are stunning and we have some great tours where you can see them in a few hours.

For those thinking of moving here, we have two new pages of info:

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:Hello from Las Vegas! Your eyes aren’t deceiving you. We’ve done a little face lift on the newsletter. Don’t worry … no drastic changes. We moved hotel specials back to the top to give you easy access to them and added the “What’s New” section to highlight the great stuff we add all the time.As usual, we were out all over the place last week. We ran into a reader at Tequila Joe’s (Imperial Palace) which we always enjoy. When at a resort area bar or lounge, I never tell anybody who I am or what I do so I can get people’s honest views of Las Vegas. It is always fun when I find out the person is a reader.Steve and his wife Maria from Windsor (Ontario, Canada) had noted his frustration with cocktail service at some slots. I shared some tips with him and he wrote me a couple of days ago to say hello and thank me. The letter is in feedback along with my tips. We enjoy being able to help!

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Calendar For Charity – Now is the time to get a 2003 Las Vegas calendar and help a good cause. These are the same high quality Las Vegas calendars you find in hotels and gift shops at or below the gift shop price with all proceeds going to charity. See the beautiful photos and purchase info atá 2003 Las Vegas Calendar.

Best “Local’s” Casino – You voted and the results are in! Here are the top Las Vegas local’s casinos (casinos away from the tourist areas usually frequented by residents):

  1. Sam’s Town – Newly remodeled, Sam’s Town appeals not only to the country music fans, but those who want a comfortable place where the rules are good, the food is better, and Mystic Falls indoor park is one of the nicest faux outdoor places to enjoy a cocktail.
  2. The Orleans – Just a mile east of The Strip on Tropicana, The Orleans boasts a comfortable atmosphere, good buffet, great specialty restaurants, regular headliners and concerts, and one of the hottest cocktail waitress outfits in town.
  3. Sunset Station and Gold Coast (tie). You can’t go wrong with either. If you haven’t been in the Gold Coast the past year, you have not been. Remodeled and upgraded to compete with The Palms (across the street), they continue to have great gaming, cheap rooms, and a new buffet that is the best in town for the money.Sunset Station was the top-of-the-line of the Station Casino group until Green Valley Ranch opened. However, few must have made it up to Green Valley Ranch (a favorite of ours) and Sunset gets the win.

This goes to show that we don’t rig our polls! You readers and other site visitors visit AccessVegas.Com and cast your votes, and our double-redundant system insures that nobody can stuff the ballet box. This month, we want to know “What is the best Las Vegas magic show”? Vote now on the main page of AccessVegas.Com

Sahara Korean Barbecue – Chef John recently enjoyed his visit and noted “The Kun-Mandu are beef pot stickers served with an excellent dipping sauce and our other main entree was Kalbee a.k.a. barbecued pork” andá “a Korean restaurant would also be a very good stop for a vegetarian looking for something beyond a tofu burger.” This restaurant is close to The Strip. Read the review with photos.

Larry G. Jones – continues his great, free show at the Fitzgerald’s downtown. So successful has he been, that the hotel has expanded and upgraded the showroom to meet demand! Jones is the “Man of 1,002 Voices.” Go see him now before the hotel figures out it should be charging much more than the one drink minimum to see him. For more info including show times, click to Larry G. Jones – Man of 1,002 Voices.

Readers Are Winning! – Message board members “kimimurad” and “kay” separately reported on recent jackpots here in Las Vegas. “kimimurad” hit at the Luxor for $1600 and $1200 and “kay” played Roaring 20’s slots at the Stardust for 8 hours on a $20 bill and walked away $750 ahead. Tell us about the big jackpot or the nice run you had at the slots in our Gambling / Jackpots forum!

Ladies Day Out – Treat Yourself to Something Special! Spend a fun-filled day doing what we love to do most and are great at…shopping, dining, and relaxing. More details at Ladies Day Out

Nellis Air Show – Nellis Air Force Base will host a two-day air show called Aviation Nation Oct. 5-6. The objective of this event is to give our friends and neighbors throughout Southern Nevada and visitors from throughout the world a behind the scenes look at AmericaÆs Air Force.

The air show will also depict the history of American aviation through numerous additional military and civilian air demonstrations and ground displays. Nearly 100 aircraft from a replica of the original Wright Flyer to some of the nationÆs newest military aircraft will be on display. Details at Nellis Air Show.

Legal Pot – You may have heard that Nevada will legalize marijuana. Maybe, but it won’t be this year. A measure on the ballot would basically legalize 3 oz. or less. It is trailing in the polls, but conjecture is that people don’t answer poll questions of this nature honestly. The bottom line: Nevada law requires constitutional measures to be passed twice to become law. So if it passes this time, another two year wait is ahead.

Subscription “Dues” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, showstours, and golf through AccessVegas.Com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by forwarding a copy to them and suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

Show Review: V The Ultimate Variety Show

Las Vegas is home to some of the greatest entertainment on earth, and because of that many great entertainers and entertainment groups make their home here. Many work in the shows, but what do the rest of them do all the time? Many do well performing private corporate events or home base out of here while spending time on the road.

Producer David Saxe found himself in an interesting situation lately. He had produced Melinda – The First Lady of Magic at The Venetian for the past few years and Melinda recently retired to start a family after a long successful career. Having been a successful Las Vegas show producer, he was familiar with all of the great acts around town and a light bulb went off: Why not bring Las Vegas a show full of cream of the crop acts for an entire show?

Reader Feedback

Steve from Windsor, Ontario wrote;

I took your advice and sat down on quarters slot machines to see if the drink service was any better than when I sat down on a nickel machine. I tried this at the Palms and knowing my luck it was no better so I went to the Rio and the service was excellent. I couldn’t even drink the first one fast enough and she was back with another one. I tipped her a dollar every time she came around and after the third one she didn’t even bother to ask me if I wanted one she just brought me one and kept doing so until I told her I was leaving. Why was I leaving a place where I was in my glory you might ask, because the Red, White, and Blue two coin machine I was playing hit on the Double, Red 7, Red 7 so I cashed out. I only had put 20 dollars into the machine and had been playing it for quite some time. Then I went to the Strat to try my luck. I sat at a nickel machine right near the bar and the service was excellent. At the Sahara I played one dollar craps and service was excellent. Actually at Slots Of Fun and Casino Royale where they also had dollar craps the service was good, so I think from my experience your advice worked on where to go to get good drink service.Looking forward on returning to Vegas in January. Keep up the good work on the newsletter as I look forward to seeing it.It was great to meet Steve and his wife. He was telling me how bad cocktail service had been in the nickel areas of various casinos. Turns out that he was often playing the nickel games “loaded” (full coins in — couldn’t get good enough cocktail service to get loaded the other way). Some of those nickel machines take 45 coins ($2.25) a pull and nickel machines are generally the tightest in the casino (letting you win the least).

I noted the simple fact that nickel areas often get the worst cocktail service because nickel players have the reputation for being the worst tippers. Don’t blame the messenger here. That is the perception of cocktail waitresses who work the casino floor day in and day out. I suggested that instead he move up to quarter or even dollar machines.

You can play many quarter machines loaded for 3-5 quarters, and some dollar machines are loaded at $2. This gives you a much better shot at great cocktail service, you are actually playing less per pull than nickels loaded, and the higher denomination machines are usually looser! Of course, tipping the waitress $1 each time doesn’t hurt (which he had already been doing). Speaking of, check out our new In-Depth Tipping Guide.

Gulf Coast Question – Message board member “GulfCoast” is headed here with his wife this fall from the Panama City, Florida area and is wondering if he should fly out of there, Pensacola, or even Atlanta. I know we have readers in the great Southeast and Gulf Coast regions (and we are hoping many of you aren’t harmed by the approaching Lili). Help a neighbor out by letting them know which city you fly here out of in our Travel Questions/Trip Suggestions forum.

Watching The Fireworks – Message board member “me me” asked us about a good place to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks. Read our suggestions or tell us where you watched them from in years past at our New Year’s Eve forum. Check out our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve page to see what all the fuss is about New Year’s here with photos and free streaming video.

Buffets – The buffet discussion is getting hot and heavy in the forums. If you are a new visitor, stop by and get some great opinions. And if you have been here … co’mon … you know you hit a couple of buffets. Good or bad, go for it in our Interactive Information Forums (message boards). Get on board!

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Summer is heating up and cold nights are a thing of the past with overnight temperatures rarely dipping below 65 degrees. We’ve been making the rounds: Sunday night we were at Carnival Court (Harrah’s) right on The Strip and we’ll be doing a photo feature on that soon.

We were at the grand opening of Skin poolside Lounge at The Palms recently and had a blast. Owner George Maloof continues to hit home run after home run with this hot new hotel property. You know we’d never leave you out so we had the camera and snapped a pile of great photos from this sexy new spot! Check them out at
http://www.accessvegas.com/photo-feature.htm

POOL PARTIES – As the weather heats up, a number of hotels are having regular pool parties open to the public! These are the latest details we have available:

* Skin at The Palms – The Palms opens up their resort pool area at 7 PM each evening. Cover is $10 but can vary depending on events. Pool attire is not only allowed but encouraged, although traditional club wear or resort casual dress is also fine. Four full-service bars, strolling entertainment, and DJ or a live band round out the mix. See photos: http://www.accessvegas.com/photo-feature.htm

* Big Al’s Fat Tuesday Poolside Parties – The Orleans pool party return every Tuesday from 7 – 10:30 PM. $2 for women, $5 for men and that includes two free drinks, hot and cold hors d’ oeuvres, and more.

* Whiskey Beach – at Green Valley Ranch opens at 7 PM nightly. Full service bar, swimming allowed, no cover charge. Green Valley Ranch has a spectacular view of the Las Vegas Valley from their pool area.

* Hard Rock – Pink Beach is evenings at 7 PM. More information pending. (We hate to publish secondhand stuff and Hard Rock has been a little slow with requested info).

* Suncoast – The Suncoast pool party returns every Wednesday from 7 – 10:30 PM. $2 for women, $5 for men and that includes two free drinks, hot and cold hors d’ oeuvres, and more.

* Swim-Up Blackjack – While not pool party, The Tropicana’s famous “Swim-Up Blackjack” has returned for another season. Pool guests can enjoy this game with towels to keep hands and chips dry as well as money dryers.

More to come and we’ll update you as we get concrete information!

HOTEL STRIKE – You might have heard the rumblings of a Las Vegas hotel strike. The great news is that all of the major gaming companies have come to a deal with the union. We understand those who haven’t do have replacement workers ready to go. These contracts expire June 1, 2002.

If you are the worrying type, we have a list of the hotels who have NOT reached a settlement at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotel-strike.htm and you may wish to avoid booking those hotels until they settle or hire permanent replacement workers.

BEST LUXURY HOTEL – You only have a few more days to vote in this month’s “Best Of” poll. We are asking you which Las Vegas luxury hotel is best. You are the visitors — your voice should count! If you have yet to vote this month, poll on the right hand sidebar of http://www.accessvegas.com

CASINO BAR STOOLS – Newsletter reader and my friend Ken has a line of bar stools with casino and sports logos on them. Very cool stuff that lets your friends know you love Las Vegas or your favorite sports team! Check out an example and contact him about other items he has for sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2107678672

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Scenic Southwest Tours – by plane, bus, or even helicopter! You’ve seen the glossy ads in the tourist brochures. You’ve thought about it. You come all the way to Las Vegas — why not see one of the some of the most famous landmarks in the world! Don’t by tricked by web sites & magazines that offer discount tours. Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

SHOW REVIEW:

SHOWGIRLS – If it seems like we’ve been reviewing quite a few topless shows lately, welcome to Las Vegas. Nobody is putting Barney the Dinosaur into hotel showrooms. For those seeking some balance, you’ll be pleased to know that the next few weeks will bring reviews of Cirque du Soleil’s “O” and Mystere.

Showgirls is the new entry into a crowded Las Vegas topless show market. Not to be confused with the movie Showgirls or previously reviewed Showgirls of Magic ( http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/showgirls-of-magic-las-vegas.htm ), this show is the distilled essence of the showgirl segments contained in other shows.

The show features 12 showgirls, each of which has an impressive resume. It is a self-described “ooooohh” and “aaaaahh” show. The women look at the truly incredible different costumes in each segment and go “ooooohh” while the men see that the showgirls are topless in each segment and go “aaaaahh.”

This show takes us on a ride through showgirl history from the Ziegfeld Follies and early Vegas shows to Madonna and Britney Spears, encompassing a tip of the hat to all entertainment that includes elaborate showgirls and dancers. Each segment features incredible costumes and dance numbers which fit the theme of each era.

The show stars Sunny, who ties the show together with her parody impersonations of Mae West, Marylyn Monroe, Joan Rivers, Madonna, and Britney Spears. Hair and costume brings the true resemblance of the stars she impersonates. A side note: she is married to the show’s producer (something she jokes about once during the show), but nepotism in this case does no harm. She is attractive, sexy, has a great voice, and is an all-around talent.

As May West, she tells bawdy jokes. Her Marilyn Monroe works the men in the audience with the breathy voice. The Joan Rivers is a bit of a weak spot. Although perhaps thrown into because Sunny does a great Joan Rivers, this style comedy impression just doesn’t seem to belong in this show. She does rebound later with the Madonna and Britney performances, actually performing “with Madonna” (via video footage) and pulling off the youthful but sexy Britney nicely.

A nice added attraction is the showgirls exhibit displayed in the theater entrance. History of 100 years of showgirls features costumes, memorabilia, and stunning photos. A real live showgirl in beautiful, full regalia is also at the exhibit to pose for photos nightly from 10 – 11 PM (except Sundays). Put this on your list of Las Vegas photo ops!

This show is a perfect match for the Rio hotel, one that markets itself with a sexy Mardi Gras theme and was the casino that set the standard for sexy cocktail waitress outfits. The show performs in the Rio’s Samba Theater, truly one of the nicest facilities in town playing host to Penn and Teller as well as national touring comedians and acts.

Showgirls is a production show running nightly (dark Sunday) at the Rio hotel. The showgirls exhibit is free to the public (all ages) and open for viewing daily from noon to midnight.

Show tickets and show time information available at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=377&cityid=1 Must Be 21 To Attend.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Change is in the air. The weather has finally settled in to a beautiful springtime after a few weeks of hit-and-miss with some cold days. More importantly we’ve changed and updated things on http://www.accessvegas.com to give you quicker access to the more deals and more Las Vegas information.

NEW LOOK – If you have not stopped by http://www.accessvegas.com recently, now is a great time. We are excited about our new, cleaner look that lets you see deals and headliners at a glance and access all the Las Vegas information you need with just one click!

APRIL PROGRAM – Our April episode of All Vegas TV is available. Simply go to http://tv.accessvegas.com and click on the big TV screen for both current and past episodes. This month we tour Little Chapel of the Flowers, showing you a “behind the scenes” on getting married in Las Vegas. We have video highlights of the new “I Love LaFong” show, and finish with an interview with video poker expert Rob Singer. If you are frustrated with attempts to play video poker and win a little here and there only to have the machine suck it all back in, stay tuned through the show for this.

SHOW VIDEOS ONLINE – You come to Vegas and see advertisements for shows — “Best of This, Best of That” — and you’ve never heard of these people. Or the person in your office who visited last month says “You gotta see so-and-so.” What are they gonna do … tell you they wasted $75.00? Hell no … not any quicker than they will tell the truth about how much they lost!

We’ve got you covered. We have online streaming videos of almost 20 top shows at All Vegas TV and the viewing price is right: FREE! Simply click over to http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/shows and preview the shows you want to see.

NEW MESSAGE BOARD – We had to replace our old message board. Unfortunately, we couldn’t save and transfer the posts so we are starting from scratch. Please feel free to post Las Vegas comments or questions to our new board at http://boards.accessvegas.com Here’s the way it works: Before you go on vacation (or if you are just curious) feel free to post questions and comments and then when you get back you can post your comments so that those visiting soon enjoy your knowledge of Las Vegas!

CHIPPENDALES – has opened at The Rio for an indefinite run. It will be interesting to see if having a little equal opportunity for the ladies here is successful for the long term. Details at http://www.vegasguide.com/detail_shows.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&id=194

JAZZ FESTIVAL – 9’th Annual City of Lights Jazz Festival takes place Saturday, April 27, 2002 at Hills Park Amphitheater at Summerlin. Summerlin is located in the Northwest Las Vegas Valley. The line up includes invited artists: world renowned Jazz vocalist Randy Crawford; the hottest, multiple award winning horn in Jazz today, trumpeter Rick Braun; the stimulating Jazz keyboards of Brian Culbertson; plus crowd pleasing Urban Jazz Pianist/Vocalist Joe Mc Bride; award winning Smooth Jazz guitarist Joyce Cooling; and hot new saxman from Denmark Michael Lington, plus other artists to be announced. Tickets available at 1-800-969-VEGAS

SHOW REVIEWS:

We’ve got a double dose this issue. Although these shows share the same showroom, they are about as diverse as possible. That is the great thing about Las Vegas — something for everyone! If you are scratching your head going “Where is the Bourbon St. Hotel,” have no fear. It is on Flamingo Rd just behind the Flamingo and Barbary Coast. Look down Flamingo from The Strip and you’ll see — it is closer to The Strip than the Bally’s / MGM monorail.

I LOVE LAFONG – When I first heard that a world famous female comedian and ventriloquist was setting up shop here, I thought “Mmmm … must be one of the new free shows for kids at Circus Circus.” If that crossed your mind also, think again. Michelle La Fong has appeared on HBO, Comedy Central, A & E and is not only one of the top female comedians today but someone who has taken ventriloquism to a new level.

Michele’s show opens with a taped introduction from comedian Jackie Mason who minced no words regarding his love and appreciation of LaFong’s act. La Fong kicks off the show with fast paced impressions of Joan Rivers, Bette Midler, Andrea “Dice” Clay (ya … she does that … you’ve seen it when flipping through the channels and have stopped to laugh) as well as Dr. Ruth. It is during this time we get a taste of her quick, multifaceted comedy along the lines of Abbot and Costello’s “Who’s On First” (which she does with a unique twist on later in the show).

LaFong came to the attention of famed Ed Sullivan regular and ventriloquist Senior Wences just a couple years before his death. So impressed was he that he left his legacy with her in both performance secrets and some of his most prized characters and props. She recently brought his “Johnny” alive in a Mercedes commercial and brings him alive nightly as well.

It is LaFong’s “boyfriend” Paco who steals the show. Paco is her smooth talking puppet with the gold chains, the snappy outfit and chauvinistic patter. La Fong’s strength lies in her ability to make her puppets truly come alive with their own personality. So strong, that you actually feel like you are watching a two person show. If you are a guy, you’d want to go watch the game and have a beer with Paco. If you are a girl, he’s the kind of guy you’d be telling your girlfriend about later going “He was such an ass, but he was kind of funny and charming.”

This is a fun show to go for laughs, but you will walk away impressed and appreciative of these characters that truly came alive before your eyes to entertain you.

I Love LaFong plays at the Bourbon St. Hotel and Casino (on Flamingo Road across from Bally’s). For current times and ticket prices, please click http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=276&cityid=1 and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability. We have online streaming video highlights of her show in this months April 2002 All Vegas TV episode at http://tv.accessvegas.com

FIELDING WEST: COMEDY, TRICKS, AND NAKED CHICKS – I like Fielding West. I like watching explosions and car wrecks in the movies as well as Las Vegas hotel demolitions live. They call it “controlled demolition” and Fielding West is a “controlled demolition” of a show in a good way. I also like comedy and West keeps the laughs coming with his twists on both traditional and original magic tricks.

West starts by making “Bob the Bird” appear and then proceeds to “torture” him, mystifying the audience while putting a mocking spin on standard animal magic routines. Later, Houdini’s metamorphous is given a similar a unique treatment. This is an illusion standard to most magic shows, where the assistant is wrapped and chained inside a box and then switches places with the magician in the blink of an eye. Except that West is a “failure,” only ending up swapping clothes with the beautiful assistant.

Speaking of … you read the title right. He’s added an adult twist to the show with assistants that spend a fair amount of time sans a top. The only person still yapping about Las Vegas as a family destination is Jay Leno to squeeze another dead joke. Vegas is back to “Boys (or Girls) Night Out” or “Romantic Couple Getaway” and that is who West is successfully aiming his show at. Having said that, this isn’t a strip club nor is the nudity presented in a way to make couples uncomfortable. The night I attended a significant portion of the audience was couple, with plenty of “Boys Night Out” groups as well.

West didn’t skimp when it came to selecting assistants. Natalie Lund was crowned Miss Minnesota in 1999 and competed in the 2000 Miss America Pageant. She has also performed in professional dance companies and appeared in two films with Mickey Rooney. Marcy Parker also dances in Melinda, First Lady of Magic at the Venetian, the Shadow Bar at Caesars Palace and most recently starred as a cheerleader for the XFL Las Vegas Outlaws.

West has written and devised acts for many of the bigger names you are familiar with, and this is a chance to see his off-the-wall comedy and magic at he source.

Fielding West: Comedy, Tricks and Naked Chicks plays at the Bourbon St. Hotel and Casino (on Flamingo Road across from Bally’s). For current times and ticket prices, please click http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=341&cityid=1 and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability. Sorry guys … no streaming video available on this one!

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

We are rolling into March here in Las Vegas! The weather has been pushing 70 degrees for a week now, and slated to be right around 70 for the next 10 days at least. Remember a jacket for the evenings.

All Vegas TV March episode is online at http://tv.accessvegas.com and a great episode it is this month! We covered the grand reopening of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago Las Vegas and Mr. Puck was very gracious in granting us a nice interview. We also have a feature on Showgirls of Magic playing at the San Remo, including an interview with showgirl Theresa Marie. Guys, don’t miss this one! I’ve also included the print review of Showgirls of Magic later in this issue.

Our friend Cook E. Jarr is back from his winter break on March 15’th, resuming his midnight shows on Friday and Saturday nights outside at the Carnival Court at Harrah’s. Cook is ageless, but his crowds get younger and younger every year to enjoy his versions of standards, “old school” hip-hop, pop and dance from today’s charts, and more. It is no coincidence that he’s back in action when Spring Break cranks up in Las Vegas and you’d better believe we’ll be covering him on All Vegas TV in the near future! If you are going “Who is Cook E. Jarr” then check out http://www.accessvegas.com/jarr

NASCAR Fans: You still have time to book a trip to get from your hotel to the track like the drivers do — in a helicopter from The Strip straight to the speedway. My friend John Buch from Maverick Helicopters has arranged great rates for our readers. Contact him directly for details at (click) mailto:john@maverickhelicopter.com Make sure to ask for Access Vegas rates and act quickly — as you may guess, availability is getting very limited.

“Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding” has launched at The Rio. This is a true version of the long running Off-Broadway show. The interactive dinner theater concept has the audience attending an “actual” wedding ceremony, reception, guests, and plenty of improv on the part of the actors. Ticket and show info available at http://www.vegasguide.com/detail_shows.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=5&id=162

The Bellagio appears to be going after Binion’s Horseshoe to take the title as THE poker place in Las Vegas. Nine different tournaments are slated for this year with buy-ins ranging from $3-10,000 depending on the tournament. Unlike Binion’s World Series of Poker (which lasts for weeks), these are going to be short tournaments taking only a few days.

Speaking of tournaments, the Las Vegas Hilton has just announced a $1 Million blackjack tournament to take place in 12 monthly rounds over the next year. Entry fee is $1000 and includes two nights lodging and other goodies. Each month, 16 players will advance to the finals and eight players will be chosen in a wild card drawing. Contact the Las Vegas Hilton at (800) 457-3307 for more info.

Syndicated radio “hot talker” Tom Leykis does his show live from The Palms Resort Friday, March 8. I’d love to tell you more, but the local affiliate didn’t have specifics as we go to press, nor has The Palms sent out a press release yet. If the broadcast isn’t available in your area, you can tune online his Phoenix affiliate KFNX live March 8 from 3-7 PM Pacific at http://www.renaissanceradio.com (simply click on the KFNX “Listen Life” button). If you are in Las Vegas, Leykis airs on 1140 AM on tape delay starting at 4 PM Pacific.

Would you do me a great big favor and take just 15 seconds of your time to forward this newsletter to one person right now while you are thinking about it (more if you like!)? That would be greatly appreciated and would help us keep our marketing costs down! Thanks in advance!

Showgirls Of Magic:

I won’t deny that I’m pretty jaded. I know virtually every casino layout like the back of my hand, and have seen almost every single show, some multiple times. All Vegas TV reporter Elizabeth Rizzo will confirm that I was checking my watch during a recent visit to EFX, and this despite the fact that Rick Springfield has kicked it up a notch and EFX is once again a show worth seeing.

This makes it an even more pleasant surprise when I run across a show that delivers the goods for a decent price, and Showgirls of Magic keeps the promise. Take an intimate showroom, four beautiful ladies, magic, dancing, and hilarious specialty acts you are have a winner. You won’t be checking your watch — you’ll be forgetting time exists enjoying this fast-paced entertainment.

Showgirls have been a part of Las Vegas since the Rat Pack days and before, but generally in “window dressing” capacity. This is one of the first real attempts to capitalize on the complete performing talents of a set of showgirls and actually make them the stars of a magic revue. It’s worked unusually well as they run through a variety of eyebrow-raising illusions such as Houdini’s Metamorphosis, levitation, and a double rendition of “sawing the girl in half” with an interesting clothing switch thrown in.

Because of the modest showroom size, you won’t see larger-than-life scale illusions but this actually works in their favor. When sitting 42 rows back in the middle of 3000 people, it is tough to tell what is truly happening on stage (with regard to “magician’s secrets”). Here, you are close enough to see the area around the illusions and see the entire stage. If you ever thought these tricks were just camera angles when you saw them on TV, now is the chance to be truly mystified “right before your very eyes.”

Long time cast member Antonio Hoyos, one of the specialty acts, provides comic relief as “The Great Antoine.” Hoyos is “vertically challenged” and his mime-like shtick as a second-rate vaudeville magician provides some good laughs. Showgirls also features other specialty magic acts in addition to Hoyos which are subject to change, as many seem to rotate from one show to another. However, they always seem to get top acts.

Although the magic is great, they give equal attention to the “showgirls” moniker with well choreographed dance numbers performed in a variety of sexy costumes (topless during the second show). For a smaller showroom, they have gone to great care to provide good lighting and sound to give the show a “big production” feel.

Showgirls of Magic features both family (covered) and topless performances. It is the same great show, but geared at slightly different audiences. The covered version is still sexy with some bare buns and double entendres from the comedy acts, but generally suitable for both teens and grandma.

The topless performances (later show) tend to draw more of the “party crowd” specifically looking for the classy adult entertainment that Las Vegas is now known for. The dancers are naturally beautiful, fun, sexy, and tasteful. Although NOT a strip club atmosphere, the topless show is a good alternative to hitting a strip club for that group of guys out on the town. Everyone will have fun, no one will have to lie to their wife, and the ticket price still leaves plenty of cash in your wallet.

Showgirls of Magic plays at the San Remo Hotel Casino, just across from the main entrance to the MGM on Tropicana Avenue (next door to Tropicana Hotel). Side Note: The San Remo is a “best kept secret” as a nice, comfortable, slightly upscale property with great dining values and a friendly staff.

Showgirls of Magic is a production show (six nights a week) with a very moderate ticket price, providing one of Las Vegas’ great show values. For current times and ticket prices, please click http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=5&showid=253 and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HITCHED ON VALENTINE’S DAY – As usual, Las Vegas was a very hot destination for Valentine’s Day. Couples pulled up in pickup trucks, 18 Wheelers, and limos. Some were planned, some were spur-of-the-moment. Philadelphia Inquirer staff writer Nita Lelyveld chronicled some of the more interesting ones at http://inq.philly.com/content/inquirer/2001/02/15/national/WED15.htm

VOTE FOR THE BEST – The Review-Journal is accepting votes in their online Best of Las Vegas 2001 poll at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/bestoflv/2001 Tens of thousands read these online results throughout the course of the year, and they let you vote for the worst as well as the best.

LATIN DANCE – clubs and nights have been all the rage the past couple of years, and Las Vegas has been no exception with Club Rio and Rumjumgle leading the way. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-20-Tue-2001/living/15420979.html

BAD INTERSECTIONS – Once again this year, the worst intersections for traffic wrecks are on The Strip. Tropicana and LV Blvd. (The Strip) was the worst, with Flamingo and LV Blvd. coming in second. The scenery is distracting, but keeping your eyes on the road and using your turn signal might just prevent you from driving home (or turning in your rental car) with a big dent in it.

CELEBRITY CHEF – Well-known local chef Les Kincaid’s 1.5 hour weekly show features famous restaurateurs, celebrity chefs, cookbook authors, winemakers, vintners, master sommeliers and all of the entertainers living or working in Las Vegas. This is a “must” for those of you who enjoy the top notch epicurean offerings that Las Vegas now offers. The show airs at noon Pacific time on Saturdays on KDWN 720 AM which you can listen to online at http://www.broadcast.com/radio/talk/kdwn/ The show is now also aired on the Cable Radio Network (check your cable listings for station).

DALE EARNHARDT – Thousands have showed up at the NASCAR Cafe (Sahara Hotel, see our restaurant review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-03-15.htm ) to pay tribute to the infamous driver who lost his life in last weekend’s Daytona 500. FEATURE STORY: Clint Holmes

Someone once joked that Las Vegas is full of headliners who are “the biggest names you have never heard of.” You get off the plane, drive down the Strip, and see names like Danny Gans or Clint Holmes and you see their faces in the tourist magazines and ask yourself “What do they do, and why are they worth some of my hard earned gambling money”?

Actually, Clint Holmes is no stranger to the music business. In 1974, he scored a #1 hit with “Playground In My Mind (My Name Is Michael)” and over the years appeared as Joan Rivers’ sidekick and announcer on “The Late Show” as well as work with both Entertainment Tonight and a successful run in Atlantic City.

You may enter the showroom not knowing who he is, but you won’t leave that way. His mother was a classically trained opera singer from England and his dad was a jazz musician from the US That left Clint blessed with not only an amazing technical singing ability, but the emotional flow to put with the pitch. Combined with his live 12-piece band and the modernized showroom at Harrah’s and you have every element for a great show.

Clint performs the work of other artists as well as original songs in a free-flowing expose of his life story. Not Broadway, but a little bit of background and banter here and there to weave it together. Fortunately, his life story is interesting, and the music is enjoyable.

His camaraderie with musical director Bill Fayne is sincere as their friendship dates back many years. While most stars want the spotlight to shine on them alone, he shares it with every member of the band, each extremely talented in their own right working together for a magnificent collaboration.

This show is “Old Vegas” style entertainment. The mood is upbeat, friendly, and warm. The songs range from jazz to soul and over the course of the show, Holmes creates a strong bond with the audience. If you want to hear techno and see people fly off the walls, try De La Guarda. If your tastes lean more toward sitting with a drink and enjoying and appreciating a fine artist and showman take the stage and entertain you, pocket a couple of chips from your first winning session at the tables and set them aside to see Clint Holmes.
