Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Wow… we are getting some lucky (and nice) fall weather with highs still in the 70’s F and cool (but not cold) nights. If you are starting to regret not planning that fall visit, we’ll do our best as we are a “virtual vacation” in every newsletter!

Plaza Doing Major Upgrades? – Downtown’s Plaza Hotel and Casino is 30 years old and despite the economic downturn, owners are looking a possible major upgrades to the 1000+ rooms in the property. If you are one of the very few who have ever staggered up to the third floor of the property, you’ve seen the huge convention area they have that sits virtually unused all year long.

If they can secure financing for the $10,000,000 in room upgrades, they hope to compete with other mid-level properties for conventions that want to be at aánice hotel, but don’t need the size of bigger convention venues.

Sahara Hotel Las Vegas

Sahara Hotel Casino Photos – We’ve loaded some new interior shots to our Sahara Las Vegas Hotel Casino photo gallery. If you are feeling the economic pinch and want to save a few bucks on your next stay, The Sahara really isn’t a bad choice. Lots of lower limit gaming and slots, a casino that was upgraded not that many years ago and is in good shape, and a monorail stop right at the hotel can have you almost anywhere on The Strip within about 15 minutes. Check out Sahara Hotel Casino Discount Reservations

Is The Las Vegas Club Scene Over? – Not quite, and as long as there is a Las Vegas, there will be plenty of nightlife catering to every segment of society. However, clubs simply aren’t paying sums in the tens of thousands of dollars to second-tier (to put it politely) celebrities just to show up for the night like they used to. We also understand that “bottle service” (paying hundreds of dollars for a bottle of liquor in able to secure a nightclub table) isn’t quite as popular as it used to be.

We have readers of all ages and our feedback (even among those in their 20’s) has been “Las Vegas needs to bring back more live music in the lounges” instead of questions about clubs. Maybe Las Vegas gaming win is down in part because the tried-and-true formula of letting people gamble, drink, watch some great free music (then repeat this pattern all evening long) has faded away at many casinos.

September Visitor Numbers Down – If you were here during September (lucky you as the hot days were winding down), you may have noticed more elbow room than usual. Visitor numbers were down 10% fromáSeptember 2007. No surprise there. Many of you plan your visits weeks (or months) in advance and this summer brought very high advance airfare.

The good news? Those of you who felt “priced out of Las Vegas” are seeing the return of some very affordable prices. I did an airfare and hotel search for January 11-14 and found the following:

$250 airfare from American’s heartland (I used Indianapolis, IN as a reference… some cities are even cheaper) and plenty of $40 a night hotel rooms both on The Strip and downtown through our hotel partners Las Vegas Hotel Deals. $660 total for two people, four days in Las Vegas, air and hotel. Yes, times are tight. But if you are of the mindset that a Vegas vacation is going to set you back thousands, time to go back and do the math!

Not Everyone Likes The New Games – An op-ed piece to our local paper regarding all the automation and lack of interaction on many of the newer casino games made some great points. Sounds like it may have even been written by one of our readers:

During a stopover in Reno 25 years ago, my wife and I discovered Nevada-style gambling — and absolutely loved it. Just as suddenly, on a summer trip to Las Vegas and Laughlin, we admitted the thrill is gone. Since when did the gaming industry rob Nevada of its uniqueness, conspiring to remake its casinos into video arcades?

Most recently, the Excalibur in Las Vegas brags about replacing its live poker room with electronic poker tables. Again, what happened to the state that believed in character — the state that made gambling real? In the old days, even when the games were “electronic,” at least the money they paid was real. Certainly, if the sound and feel of money were not important, why does every ticket machine go “clink! clink!” Click to read full storyáInteraction, winning give way to gadgets, losing

Hello!! Is there a local bar or hotel downtown just to go and tilt back a couple and shoot some pleasure billiards? (Not looking for competitive-type, that’s for sure).

Shelley

Ted Responds:

Jillian’s in Neonopolis has a room dedicated to pool tables called the 9 Ball Billiard Lounge. First come, first served. Before 4 PM, $6.00 per person per hour (Monday-Friday Billiards are complimentary with your meal). After 4 PM, $5.00 per person per hour. Odds are you’ll find other visitors just in to have fun like you are!

We, four 22/23 year old guys, are trying to determine whether to come to Vegas over Thanksgiving (Thurs, Friday, Saturday night) 2008, or over Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday night) 2009. Basically, we are looking for the best time to party (clubs/hotels/etc) for the best value. Flight prices seem cheaper over MLK weekend, but hotel rooms look more expensive. Can you give us some advice on when to experience Vegas? Thanks for your help.

Lance

Ted Responds:

There really aren’t any badáweekends for many of the clubs. Thanksgiving extended weekend draws more international visitors. To a lessor scale, some families use Thanksgiving weekend as a time to gather in Las Vegas, but once Thursday is over, extended families spend the rest of the weekend doing typical Vegas stuff.

Thanksgiving offers tons of football betting (college and pro) all four days. It will offer slightly warmer weather than MLK weekend (although not pool weather). Also, MLK weekend does fall in that “dead zone” between New Years Eve and Superbowl Sunday.

If you are looking for crowds, football betting, and visitor variety, I’d look at Thanksgiving. If looking for a slower time when lines might not be so long, and club prices (admission, bottles) not so stiff, lean toward MLK.

We come to Vegas every year and this year we are staying for one month. As far as gambling goes we are not in the ‘upper’ bracket but still contribute to the area’s economy. As well as having some fun we have made very good friends and look foreword to ‘partying’ with them.

Over the years Vegas has changed dramatically, not always for the better. As you have mentioned ‘bean counters’ have a place in business BUT they should be monitored and tempered by experienced persons who understand the psychology of gambling, not just the ‘bottom line’. Remember, Vegas is not built on winners, but a good winner is good for the promotions.

On our first visit, Sam’s Town was still ‘in the desert’. If Vegas did not exist, no one would have the twisted imagination to invent it. We love America, with all its faults, we have found the people to be genuine, with all their foibles, and only serious old age or being destitute will stop us visiting. Perhaps this year we will win, or, break even.

Best wishes,

Wolf and Jean from Coventry, England

Ted Responds:

Couldn’t agree with you more. The guys running the casinos used to be gamblers themselves and understood the psychology of it. These new guys may be financial wizards (or maybe not judging by how gaming companies are doing), but they should be on Wall Street, not making the decisions on how to best get people to enjoy gaming.

Thanks again for this marvelous newsletter – we couldn’t make it to Vegas this year – but as I am turning 40 next year our USA-trip -including Vegas- has been arranged now. We are looking forward to come over in February ’09.

Greetings from Germany

Ollie and Diana

Ted Responds:

Great to hear from you and happy that you are still reading and keeping up on Las Vegas. I passed 40 just over three years ago… you’ll have great fun celebrating it here!

Love the newsletter and all the great information. I have been a subscriber for years and watched your changes and have gotten so much useful information for our frequent visits. Its so nice to be kept “in the know” on what is happening, or has happened or will be happening. I especially enjoy the Q & A column in your news letter from readers… it truly is the inside scoop and I admire your honesty.

Thanks, great job!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! What a strange week it has been. The weekend of October 11-12 brought record cool temperatures (highs in the 60’s F). Things have rebounded nicely, but the sun is down around 6 PM and the evenings are cooling off quickly.

Las Vegas Bikefest Photos – We have the rest of the Bikefest photos from the downtown Las Vegas event a couple of weeks ago. Important: None contain anything you won’t see on basic (U.S.) cable TV but they might not be considered safe for work. Click on a photo to see the associated gallery:

As noted last week, if bikes or girls aren’t your cup of tea, have no fear. Coming issues will debut new photo galleries and updates on some of the great Las Vegas Strip hotels and casinos plus a new Bellagio Gardens photo set! And don’t forget, below each and every photo in our vast Las Vegas Photo Gallery is a “send to a friend” link.

At Tale Of Two Plazas – A local jury has decided that the hotel that may (or may not) end up being constructed on the site of the old Frontier Hotel can use the name The Plaza. This despite the fact that downtown Las Vegas has had a hotel named Plaza since the 1970’s. This because the company building the new hotel here owns New York City’s Plaza hotel, which has a 100 year history.

What a huge mistake that would be! Look… I love the downtown Plaza hotel. I’ve easily visited it hundreds of times in my 15 years here in town. When I lived closer to downtown, I’d head down to Fremont Street 6-7 times per month, parking at The Plaza and stopping for a libation and a few hands of video poker before heading out to unwind, people watch, and grab something to eat. However, let’s not mince words: The downtown Plaza isn’t a luxury resort.

The New York City Plaza is known for being the crÞme de la crÞme. Top notch all the way. However, I’ll bet you that over 95% of Las Vegas visitors aren’t remotely familiar with it. The risk is that when people hear the name Las Vegas Plaza, they will associate it with the more modest downtown property. Visitors who visit downtown will tell friends “We went to the Plaza, it was nothing special.”

An analogy: Lexus isn’t about to come out with a car model called Kia. Nothing wrong with a Kia (Kia owners are laughing with every gas station they pass), but it isn’t a Lexus in terms of luxury. Nothing wrong with the downtown Plaza, but risking association with it when you are going to attempt to build a world-class hotel is simply an error.

Dive-In Movies On The Beach Canceled – The 2008 Dive-In Movies at Mandalay Bay Beach, previously scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24 and Friday, Oct. 31, have been canceled. No reason was given.

Halloween In Las Vegas Event List – As promised last issue, we have started compiling a list of Las Vegas Halloween Events. More event notices are coming in every few days, so you may want to bookmark that page, tell your friends about it, and check back often.

Enjoy This Issue!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas!

Lots of focus on the north end of The Strip this week with the news of the sale of The Frontier, plus our brand new Sahara Photos and Riviera Computer Wallpaper.

Pretty big week of news with (finally) the sale of The Frontier hotel. As many of you have heard, the owners of New York’s Plaza hotel have bought The Frontier (across from Wynn, next to Trump’s towers… yes, a second one is going up). They plan to use the Plaza brand, which is interesting because Las Vegas has had a “Plaza” hotel downtown since the 70’s. According to the Associated Press,

Elad Group intends to build a luxury hotel with about 3,500 rooms, private residences, retail space and a casino bearing The Plaza brand on the New Frontier site, Elad president Miki Naftali said in a statement. Opening for the 34.5-acre site across from the Wynn Las Vegas is targeted for 2011.

Ya, ya, ya… whatever, guys. I’ve run out of fingers and toes trying to county the number of “big time, going to be huge, going to take Vegas by storm” projects out of New York, Los Angeles, Miami and other places that have failed to materialize. Among the most very recent, W Las Vegas resort project canceled and a few months ago, Las Ramblas. (I was laughing at the concept and viability of Las Ramblas from day one).

For the most part, the successful multi-billion dollar multi-use projects going up have been built by one of the established local operators (MGM’s CityCenter, Boyd’s Echelon). Bottom line is that we’ll know these new “Plaza” plans are serious when they pony up to buy the name locally from the downtown hotel. For now, I’m treating this as a lot of hot air.

Tickets, Tickets, and more Tickets – Just a reminder that we have tickets to far more than just Las Vegas shows and concerts and usually at some of the best prices you will find for good and premium seats. Dunkin’ Donuts Coming To Town – As usual, we were way ahead of the curve on this one. In our April 11 issue, reader Kristen asked why we have none and I suggested:

I do understand how Dunkin’ Donuts is revered in other parts of the country, and with a large contingent of east coast visitors and transplants, I agree it seems strange that we have no locations here. We know a number of hotel management types read our newsletter. Consider your request delivered!

Lo and behold, the news is official: Dunkin’ Donuts to open 62 LV stores in seven years

The Fashionistas – Show Review

The Fashionistas

Reviewed May 2007
by Nancy Dickinson

The fashion industry probably didn’t know the raw passion it could spawn through music, story, and dance… but leave it to Vegas to bring forth the goods. Fashionistas, a hot seam ripping show at the Empire Ballroom is based on tales of an innovative fashion fetish company, vivacious women seductresses, and the domineering love triangles some very sexy (and certainly masochistic) characters have managed to sew together. The result stitches a new, dark, seductive face upon the fashion industry that is unafraid of celebrating shape and form in all things. Click to Read The Full Review…

Mandalay Beach Ups the Ante – Mandalay Beach will redefine fun-in-the-sun this June with the addition of Las Vegas’ only climate-controlled poolside gaming venue at Mandalay Bay. Just feet from crystal-clear waves, a new three-story, glass-fronted Beach casino will invite guests to indulge at their leisure.

The first level will offer a casual bar and grill while the second level will feature table games with expansive, open-air views. On the third floor, guests will find the spectacular Villas Soleil, luxury pool villas ranging from 250 to 500 square feet. Click to enjoy Mandalay Bay Las Vegas Photos

Lewis keeps Labor Day telethon in Las Vegas– Jerry Lewis’ annual Labor Day telethon to fight muscular dystrophy, which aired from Las Vegas last year, will return this year. The broadcast, which benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association, will air Sept. 2-3 from the South Point hotel-casino south of the Las Vegas Strip, organizers said Wednesday. Lewis moved the telethon out of its longtime home in Los Angeles last year, saying it had been overshadowed by other productions there. Click to Read Complete Article

Gambling Talk: Is There An Internet Poker Ban?– with Victor H. Royer. First of all, there is NO Internet poker ban, and NO Internet gaming bad. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 does NOT prohibit Internet gaming. It is designed to stop banks from financial transactions directly with Internet gaming sites. This is something that was already done several years ago, when the Credit Card companies decided to pull out for fear of being targeted by the Justice Department, even though the DOJ had NO LAW to fall back on. The Wire Act of 1961 was ruled by the Supreme Court as applicable ONLY to sports. Click to Read Complete Article

Dear Ted:I have been to Vegas several times now and each time is a new experience. Myself and three other girls are going to Vegas in December and would like to attend the NFR at the Thomas Mack Centre. I wondered if you could tell me where is a good location to be seated to view the action of the rodeo without paying an arm and a leg for seats. Never having been at the centre I am unsure as to whether the 200 section is so high up that we wouldn’t be able to distinguish the cowboy from the bull or horse. Any insight you could give me in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I thoroughly enjoy reading your newsletter and look forward to it in my in box. Keep up the good work.

LuAnn McQuillan,

Ted Responds:

I have never been to NFR. Having said that, most people are just happy to get tickets to it!

Your other option is to just come during NFR time. Most of the hotels have it on all their screens, some set up special viewing rooms. Many come for the country atmosphere.

Perhaps we can hear from readers who have been to NFR, where they sat, how they enjoyed it. We do have National Finals Rodeo tickets available. Note: These are resale tickets as the event sells out ever year, year-after-year (IE, you just can’t walk up and buy a ticket).

THIS ISSUE: Le Cabaret

EDITOR’S NOTES: After sending the last issue, I was out the door for a family reunion for a few days. It’s nice to get away, but after a few days I miss Las Vegas just like many of you do when you have to leave … and I live here!

The good news right now is that the decline in business travel has brought airfares down, and the opening of 1000 more rooms at Stratosphere have helped soften up Las Vegas room prices. Use the links above to plan an October getaway to Vegas, especially if the weather where you live turns cold by then. Plus, football season and baseball playoffs are coming up!

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:WYNN AGAIN – Steve Wynn has formally revealed plans for the resort that will mark his return to the Las Vegas Strip — a 45-story, 2,455-room, 514-foot golden glass tower, complete with a four-acre lake, rising above Las Vegas Boulevard. The plans, which depict a resort that makes liberal use of skylights, gardens and water, were filed with the Clark County Planning Commission recently, and that agency will consider Wynn’s proposal tonight. The commission staff has recommended approval of the plans.
THE MONORAIL – Work has begun on the monorail which will run along the East side of The Strip, behind the hotels. The four mile monorail is expected to get 19 million riders each year, and should be a nice alternative to the lousy cab service and gridlock that haunts The Strip even on weekdays now. Story at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-3.htm

ELVIS – Elvis Presley died 24 years ago this month, but the King of Rock and Roll lives on. Presley is now delighting fans with Elvis Live in Las Vegas, a new four-CD box set that chronicles his famous performances in the town he made his own. Full story at http://www.sptimes.com/News/081601/Floridian/Elvis_and_Vegas__toge.shtml You can buy the new box set on sale at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005LN70/invegascom

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HORSESHOE – Without fanfare but with a secure place in Las Vegas history, Binion’s Horseshoe celebrates its 50th birthday today. One of the city’s longest-operating casinos, the Horseshoe set trends for many of today’s most successful gambling properties. Founded Aug. 15, 1951, by Benny Binion, a former Dallas bootlegger and illegal casino operator, the privately owned, family-run Horseshoe offered bigger betting limits and more free food and drinks to customers than other casinos. SOUVENIR GLASSES – Where else but Las Vegas can one get a 52-ounce margarita in a plastic cup shaped like a sphinx, or a 32-ounce strawberry daiquiri in an Eiffel Tower-shaped glass or even 40 ounces of Passion Punch in what looks like a prop from the television show “I Dream of Jeanie”? Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Aug-21-Tue-2001/living/16783796.html and this week’s poll asks you what your favorite Las Vegas souvenir is. Come vote at http://www.accessvegas.com

LOVE THE CABBIES – Lately, a week hasn’t gone by without the cab drivers sticking their foot in their mouths. Last week, we noted that they were griping about working shifts to help accommodate the maximum number of arrivals at McCarran.

This week, cab driver Harvey Wiginton said in a Letter to the Editor of the Review-Journal, “The people who cause the traffic problems are the drive-ins from California. They do not park their cars and ride the buses, trolleys and cabs now … The best way to solve the Strip traffic problem would be for all the hotels to charge for parking. I believe that if these people had to pay every time they moved their cars, they would walk and ride taxis, buses and trolleys.” Full text is available at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Aug-22-Wed-2001/opinion/16814259.html (second letter down).

Maybe ole’ Harvey should try to squeeze himself onto the hot, crowded busses on The Strip in the evening. How he can compare that to a state-of-the-art monorail running on it’s own tracks above the crowds (faster travel), I’ll never know. Maybe more people would take the cabs if the cabbies weren’t running you through the airport tunnel, which adds $5-10 to the ride. (Note: if you aren’t renting a car, use one of the hotel shuttle services available at the airport — a set price regardless of traffic or routing.)

NEXT BIG STAR – Ed McMahon’s “Next Big Star” TV show has started taping at the MGM. It is basically Star Search revisited, and will be airing nationally. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Aug-13-Mon-2001/living/16743982.html Tickets for Sept. 7-9, 21-23, and 28-30 tapings are free and may be obtained by calling (866) 746-9849, Ext. 639

TRAVEL CHANNEL – is still looking for couples planning a Las Vegas wedding to appear in a TV special:

HAVE YOUR LAS VEGAS WEDDING ON TV!
A new series for the Travel Channel entitled “Two For Las Vegas” is looking for fun and interesting couples to be featured on a national television show. You must already have wedding plans confirmed for July 9th through the end of September 2001. The more unusual, the better, but traditional is fine too! If you are interested please send an email to (click) mailto:twoforlasvegas@filmgarden.net – and request an application. Selected applicants will be notified approximately a week before their actual wedding date. Best of luck!

HIGHWAY STATIONS – If you make the drive from Southern California, you are familiar with the “Highway Stations” with broadcast along the deserted stretches of I-15 and I-40. A recent article tells their story and has a listing of the stations and frequencies. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Aug-19-Sun-2001/business/16623246.html

CASINO SOFTWARE – The Microsoft Casino trial version takes you into the tropics with access to The Mirage resort. Start with $10,000 and play until you win big ($100,000) or lose it all! Along the way, play and win up to three different comps from featuring Sigfried & Roy, Danny Gans and the buffet. Download at http://www.microsoft.com/insider/pf/CasinoTrial.htm

NOT FOR KIDS – Not only is Las Vegas becoming a less child friendly place for tourists, but the Kid-Friendly Cities Report Card 2001 gave Las Vegas a B- and ranked it 97th compared with 140 other cities of its size.
CBS – continues to draws thousands to its research facility, Television City, in the MGM Grand. Tourists willing to give up an hour of their time can preview upcoming shows, promos, and test pilots and give their input. Full story and details at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-2.htm

VIDEOS – We are continuing to test online video segments. To test server and coding, I took a couple of minutes of Mystere and encoded it for online viewing. You can take a peek at http://tv.accessvegas.com/mystere.htm

FEATURE STORY: Le Cabaret

Le Cabaret is the new show at The Plaza downtown. It looks back to the days of variety shows with song, dance, impressions, and magic. This isn’t exactly the Ed Sullivan show, but a funny and sexy show which features three talented, young, up-and-coming performers who have put together a solid hour-plus of entertainment.

Jenny Alexander has been studying magic for eight years, and headlining at Caesars from 1997 – 2000 in the Magical Empire. Fit and attractive with dark hair and sexy, body conscious attire, she performs a variety of solid illusions. With magic on TV often and no one really stretching the limits with new illusions, performance and presentation make or break a live act and Alexander’s show kept the audience spellbound. It also just so happens that she was voted “Sexiest Women In Las Vegas” in the City Life readers poll last year.

“The Exotic Sarafina” is billed as a song and dance seductress, and she doesn’t let down in either department. Although her choice of music was somewhat campy (standard country tunes that I’m sure appeal to a broad range of people), she has a great voice and more importantly a riveting stage presence.

Because the show is new and still working on filling the showroom, she was able to really work the crowd while she sang in an up close and personal way, causing a number of men to blush while their wives laughed at the frivolity (nothing threatening, ladies). She also returned later for an extremely sensual onstage dance routine on a red couch shaped like a pair of lips.

La Cabaret’s star is one Larry G. Jones, a comedic impressionist who may someday be heir to the Danny Gans / Andre-Philippe Gagnon throne. He was buzzing through impressions so full of one-liners and comedic lyrics that you barely stopped laughing at the last one before he hit you with another zinger. He can do over 125 voices, and did at least half of them in his roughly 30 minute segment.

Jones does Julio and Willie, Chubby Checker, Johnny Cash, our last four US Presidents (in an Alice in Wonderland joke that pokes fun at Bill Clinton), an unmerciful stab at Mr. Rogers, a deep Lou Rawls, Cher, a hilarious Michael Jackson, a Wayne Newton that is possibly better than the present Wayne (who’s voice isn’t what it used to be after an illness a few years back), and far more than I could list here.

Le Cabaret is the perfect show to fit into your busy Las Vegas itinerary, packing plenty of entertainment and variety into an hour. I saw it with out-of-town relatives and our “do downtown Vegas” night consisted of seeing a light show, dinner, Le Cabaret, and then another light show and a little gambling.

Le Cabaret plays nightly (dark Monday) at 8 and 10 PM in the historic showroom of the Plaza Hotel downtown. Tickets are a reasonable $23.95 plus tax and include one drink. $5 discount coupons are available near the front desk. Although no nudity and only a couple naughty words, this is probably a show better suited to adults who will appreciate the impressions and comedic references.

Good point: If you are like me, you buy more stuff on vacation than you have room to carry back. The above is a great suggestion. If you have a rental car, and are up against your baggage limit, you can also go to Mail Boxes Etc., and ship the stuff back (something I did on my last trip — the fee was worth the packing and shipping).

Whether you are just starting a site, want to move your site away from unreliable and unprofessional looking free web hosting (with those long addresses and extra banners and links don’t look businesslike), or need a full dedicated server like we have, you will be pleasantly surprised by their rates and service. Click now and go compare http://www.virtual-spaces.com

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

DESERT INN – continues to move up it’s closing date as they lose employees. See the place fast … it will possibly be closed by the time the Aladdin opens up on Aug. 17. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jul-27-Thu-2000/business/14050404.html

NEVADA TRIVIA – This new The book has 1,200 trivia questions divided into sections: geography, entertainment, history, arts and literature, sports and leisure, and science and nature. You can take a sample Nevada Trivia quiz in the article at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jul-27-Thu-2000/lifestyles/14010868.html and the book is for sale from Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1558537309/invegascom

RESTAURANTS – No, it’s not your imagination. Just about every major casino has or is building some kind of noodle shop to appeal to their Asian clientele. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jul-12-Wed-2000/lifestyles/13920282.html If you have never had the pleasure of watching Chef Kin Mark spin one roll of flour into thousands of noodles by hand (no cutting or tools), check it out next time you are at the MGM. Lots of fun to watch — combine it with a stop to see the Frank Sinatra impersonator at the Hollywood Brown Derby Wed. – Sun. nights! Kin Mark story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jul-12-Wed-2000/lifestyles/13928898.html

We took a recent visit to the Rio Carnival Buffet (not to be confused with their Seafood Buffet which we reviewed at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-02-02.htm ) and found it to be quite improved. Still spendy at $11 for lunch and $14 for dinner, but the quality is back making it more worth the money. Gatsby’s in the MGM is reviewed at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jul-26-Wed-2000/lifestyles/14003743.html

The Stratosphere Tower is serving lunch in the Top of the World restaurant, and the $6-12 price range gives you all the view for a fraction of dinner. Plus the lounge (one floor up) is having happy hour, and more added TVs to view sports on … might be a good place to grab lunch and watch that afternoon ball game you get on. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jun-28-Wed-2000/lifestyles/13827722.html Finally, if visiting the three high-end steak houses we reviewed over the last 6 weeks hasn’t left you broke, you can check out Charlie Palmer’s at the Four Seasons (Mandalay Bay). Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jul-12-Wed-2000/lifestyles/13922285.html

FEATURE STORY: Jubilee!

jubilee.jpg (35641 bytes)“Don Arden’s Jubilee!” at Bally’s has been a staple on the Las Vegas strip since 1981, and with good reason. This is very much a throwback to the television variety shows of 30 years ago, featuring an impressive array of song, dance, theatrics, magic, and specialty acts.

Act 1 features all of the almost 100 singers, dancers and showgirls in seven scenes that remind us of the golden age of Hollywood musicals (with the exception of the topless showgirls). This act continues to build into a crescendo of entertainment that covers the entire stage, and gives us a taste of what is to come.

Act 3 entitled “Samson and Delilah!” was a loose theatrical interpretation, featuring some of the very elaborate staging that this Jubilee! is famous for. The story of lust and deceit featured risquÚ costumes on both the male and female singers and dancers, recreating the decadence of that period. As expected, Samsom brought down the set in a burst of fire and falling debris.

Act 2 and Act 4 were perhaps the weak points. Act 2 features the balancing artistry of Jean Nedel. This man’s upper body strength is phenomenal, as he balances with his hands and arms on dual and single poles with his entire body moving and twisting above him. But … once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it, and this segment could be shortened. Act 4 was the first of two by feature magician Dirk Arthur, featuring standard illusions and a couple of his exotic leopards and tigers. A piece of close up magic was broadcast large-screen as he performed it so that everyone could see, but between the poor lighting and picture quality, most of us were straining to see what would have otherwise been a great trick in a more intimate setting.

Act 5 picked right back up again with the “Titanic.” With impressive staging and props, we are taken on a journey aboard the ill-fated voyage with a spellbinding tribute to the French follies shows of old. The replication of the ships grand ballroom provides fun and frolic that is interrupted by news that the Titanic has hit an iceberg. The stage is transformed into the engine room in a flood of water as havoc breaks loose and the ship sinks in grand form. This must be seen!

Act 6 brings back Dirk Arthur, and this time he gets the ball rolling with a number of incredible illusions. He escapes a rock cutting drill, makes a tiger vanish in thin air from a cage above the stage, makes a sports car levitate and vanish, and finishes by making a helicopter appear. He certainly was saving the best for last!

Act 7 is “The Finale,” a formal ballroom-based tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers with nods to Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and Gershwin full of music, romance, impressive costumes, singing, and dancing.

If you want to see one traditional Las Vegas show, it would be hard to pick between Jubilee! and Follies Bergere (reviewed at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-03-29.htm ). Follies has more of a warm “good mood” vibe to it, and relies more on a “wink, wink” sexiness, the charisma of the hosts, and comedy. Jubilee! is the full-scale variety show (minus comedy) that goes for an over-the-top feel in every category. You shouldn’t be disappointed by either.

Jubilee! is presented at Bally’s twice nightly at 7:30PM and 10:30 PM, dark Tuesdays. Tickets range from $50-60 plus fees, and this is an adult show because of topless and risquÚ costumes. More info and online ticket purchase available at http://www.vegasguide.com/detail_shows.cfm?ID=10&amid=143&cscheme=5 We are giving away two Jubilee! programs in the contest section of this newsletter.

For those that missed it, we noted this in our June 21 edition: NEW SHOW – According to R-J columnist Norm, the Rio is unveiling a new Cirque du Soleil called De la Guard next month, and will be one of the most unique ever. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jun-19-Mon-2000/news/13796400.html and we’ll give you more details as they become available. UPDATE: They are running a little behind due to getting all the required permits for the building, but an August opening is expected.

As a born and raised Oregonian, I too have visited an Oregon Indian casino and thought that the coinless system they use is a bad joke. I’m with the rest of you — I want to hear those coins hit, and enjoy scooping them up!

Our thanks to all who wrote to express an opinion on coinless slots. More than we could print, but most agree you don’t want them.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY – to us! A year ago we had the crazy idea of a free weekly internet newsletter with our first-hand reviews as a companion to http://www.accessvegas.com We’ve come a way, as evidenced by our very first newsletter archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-05-20.htm In fact, to meet the demand for Las Vegas news on a daily basis, we started http://www.accessvegas.com and that site is now updated every 12 – 24 hours, 7 days a week with the best and latest stories that appeal to both tourists and locals alike!

We want to thank you for a great year, and for all the input whether bad or good! As our circulation grows, we garner more recognition from the hotels and gaming community. Over the next few months hope to offer a number of great contests and specials for free rooms, food, show tickets and more in conjunction with the hotels.

To help make this happen, we have a small favor to ask: We haven’t yet cracked the 10,000 subscriber mark and that is really the bulls eye we need to hit to offer the above. If you enjoy this newsletter, please forward it to one or two friends who may enjoy it right now while you are thinking about it with a note saying how much you enjoy it. We thank you, and if they like Las Vegas, they will thank you too!

BINION TRIAL – is finally over, and quite the spectacle it was! For those that haven’t been following it with our daily updates at http://www.accessvegas.com we have the final stories:

The Sentence: http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/May-23-Tue-2000/news/13629732.html
The Verdict: http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/news/packages/binion/charges.html
The Story: http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/news/packages/binion/verdict-story.html

HURRY – As noted last week, the Bellagio public gallery viewings are coming to an end, and they pull the plug this Sunday so if you are in town this weekend, get over there in the morning to get your reservations for later in the day. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/May-24-Wed-2000/business/13640142.html

HOT, HOT, HOT – Don’t even pack a sweater or a coat on your visit here until September or October. Monday we broke a record with 108 degrees and while it’s easing back a bit, it’s just not going to get cold for the next four months period. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/May-23-Tue-2000/news/13629732.html The good news for you? Hotel rates drop in the summer, and the action at the pools heats up!

SHRIMP COCKTAIL – I’ve always been partial to our cheap shrimp cocktails and the Review-Journal hit the Strip and downtown, testing 8 of them. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/May-24-Wed-2000/lifestyles/13606380.html We differ with them on the Golden Gate. Although infamous for it’s 99 cent shrimp cocktail, the quality has been terrible the past few months. They also failed to note The Plaza’s 50 cent shrimp cocktail right across the street. All shrimp, no filler, crackers included.

ELLIS ISLAND – just behind Bally’s on Koval is having a Memorial Weekend bash this Saturday with all you can eat barbecue from 2-11 PM. For $10.95 you get baby back ribs, barbecue chicken, corn on the cob, cole slaw, and all their micro brew beer you can drink.

POOLSIDE BBQ – every Thursday evening at The Plaza from 6-10 PM. Admission is $10 for men, $2 for women and includes 1 free hot dog or hamburger and all you can drink free draft beer plus live music and a $500 cash drawing.

FEATURE STORY: Elvis-A-Rama

“Viva Las Vegas”! Few performers are as linked to this city as Elvis. You can still get married by “Elvis”, see performers doing Elvis tributes, and even catch the Flying Elvis jumpers made famous in the film “Honeymoon In Vegas.”

Now, thanks to Elvis collector Chris Davidson, you can actually get as close to the real thing as possible at the Elvis-A-Rama Museum. Just a couple of blocks from the Strip, this $3.5 million collection is like nothing else on earth.

elvis-1.jpgAfter being greeted by Elvis in voice, you enter the museum area to see the music wall, showcasing every commercially released 45, EP, and LP ever recorded by the King along brief year-by-year history of his life.

This isn’t some small “county fair” type of display. The permanent museum has 8200 sq. feet full of memorabilia, including 3 cars and Elvis’ first speedboat. Among the cars are his 1955 black Cadillac limo reportedly used to haul guitars and drums between tour stops and ElvisÆ Glastron speedboat.

Displays are tastefully full of every kind of memorabilia imaginable! Record contracts, identification (including his signed Social Security card), address books, clothing, scarves, guns, sporting goods and much more. There are also interactive displays where the touch of a button plays various clips from interesting and important events in his life, including a 1968 TV special.

elvis-2.jpg (23539 bytes)His Army years are chronicled with one of only two Army trunks that he shipped back from Germany containing a set of his fatigues and 8 pages of personal, hand written correspondence between Colonel Parker and Elvis dated 1959 and 1960. You can feel the presence of Elvis through the many and varied personally scripted items. Not just a few autographed record jackets, but things like car insurance applications, the address book containing names and phone numbers of the likes of Natalie Wood, Nick Adam, and Colonel Tom Parker, and even an autographed pair of blue suede shoes.

Rings and jewelry are featured, both from his early days and more flashy (and expensive) diamond studded gold bands owned and worn by Elvis later in life. Also displayed and chronicled were items relating to his TCB motto (Taking Care of Business) which was the rally cry for his “Memphis Mafia” whom took care of what he needed, and quickly.

The museum houses a number of Elvis’ trademark jumpsuits, including the “Cisco Kid” black and green leather-trimmed one worn in 1971 that was pictured on the “He Touched Me” album sleeve. A recent purchase (and only on display for the rest of the summer) is the dark blue two-piece sleeveless jumpsuit with jewel-studded jacket and ornate blue leather belt that Elvis wore during performances at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1975.

The museum is open 10 AM – 6 PM daily. It is located at 3401 Industrial Rd. just behind the Fashion Show mall. Admission is a very reasonable $9.95 (NV residents and seniors $2 off, children under 12 free). As an added bonus, an live Elvis tribute by one Las Vegas’ noted impersonators plays almost every hour at the top of the hour. Call ahead (702) 309-7200 for show times. The gift shop contains the largest and most diversified number of Elvis licensed merchandise and we are giving a away a couple of museum T-shirts in our giveaway section this week. Glad you had a nice time. Renting a car is personal preference. I know people who refuse to do it (citing traffic, etc.) and others who won’t even think of going without (citing the easy valet parking, cost of cabs, and convenience). To help people decide if they should rent a car in Las Vegas, we have put some guidelines on our http://www.accessvegas.com/transportation.htm page (scroll down to the rental car section).

FEATURE STORY: Center Stage RestaurantA few years ago, I stumbled across what I still consider one of the best kept secrets in town: The Center Stage Restaurant at the Plaza hotel. I had avoided it for the very reasons many people avoid the Plaza all-together — the place is not exactly The Mirage. Low limit games, cheap drinks, older slot machines, a carpet that needed replacing years ago, and some of the worst lounge acts in town all combine to make The Plaza one of the last places you would consider getting a decent meal . Which is a shame …

center-stage.jpg (20547 bytes)If you stand in front of the Golden Gate at the end of Fremont St. and look straight up at the Plaza, you notice a glass dome. Tucked away upstair in a quiet part of the hotel where the carpet hasn’t worn out yet sits the very best view of Fremont St. available to the public. The restaurant is actually pretty nice (they used it for the fine dining scene in the film Casino), and in keeping with owner Jackie Gaughn’s “low roller” tradition, the food is good, the view is great, and the prices are very reasonable.

Appetizers are well portioned, running for compote of fresh fruit ($3.50) to lobster or jumbo shrimp cocktail ($7.50). However, you might want to skip them and save room for the main course as they don’t skimp on the food.

I’m a sucker for their prime rib. Mr. Gaughn is originally from Nebraska and word has it that he gets his beef from that part of the country. The complete prime rib dinner only runs $11.95 and all dinners come with choice of French Onion Soup, Soup ju Jour, or dinner salad, Vegetable du Jour, as well as choice of potato, rice, or Fettucine Alfredo and a wonderfully unique fresh baked loaf of bread.

Dinners start at a very modest price with the Southern Fried Chicken ($7.50) and Chicken Sicilian ($9.50). Meat eaters will enjoy Baby Back Pork Ribs (a full rack, $11.95), New York Steak (regular or Cajun, $11.95), Porterhouse ($13.95), Filet Mignon ($15.95) and Broiled Lamb Chops ($16.95).

From the sea, I love their Idaho Broiled Rainbow Trout ($11.50) but don’t limit yourself: they offer Shrimp, Orange Roughy, Alaskan King Crab Legs, and Scampi Meuniere ranging from $11.95 to $16.95. Another great meal is the Whole Fresh Maine Lobster with Crab stuffing ($19.95). Combos are available: New York Steak & Shrimp is always good ($13.95), as well as New York Steak & King Crab Legs ($16.95), but I like to go all out with the Lobster Tail and New York Steak Combo ($27.95).

Desert selection is limited and runs $3.00 to $4.50. Don’t ask me about them — I’ve always been too stuffed to try one but they look good!

This isn’t Picasso or Delmonico. While it is their “gourmet” room, please remember that you are at the Plaza. However, the value is unmatched. You are paying coffee shop prices for the food, but atmosphere and service are well above coffee shop standards, even when the view isn’t taken into account. Add an unparalleled, splendid view of Fremont St. and you have my #1 best kept secret in Las Vegas. I have taken friends, family, dates, and clients to the Center Stage and never had a bad experience.

The Center Stage Restaurant is upstairs in the Plaza Hotel downtown. They open at 5:00 PM and last seating is at 10:30 PM. Reservations are suggested — smoking needs to be requested in order to be seated in the dome with a view, although the dome’s high ceiling and good ventilation make is a moot point to all but those who are very sensitive to smoke. They generally make every effort to seat people in the dome. However, when busy, a discrete $5 tip to the maitre d’ with a view request will be honored although you may have to spend a few minutes at the bar if dome seating isn’t immediately available.

There are none that I’m aware of that individuals can take at this time. The closest might be the “behind the scenes” tour of the Secret Garden’s of Siegfried and Roy (info archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-12-01.htm ). Also, if you have a group of 15 or more, EFX at the MGM has a backstage tour available.

I imagine security issues have much to do with this. If there are building tours that we are unaware of, please drop us a note: allvegastv@aol.com

One of the very reasons we publish this newsletter is because things change so quickly in Las Vegas. Three years ago, you could get a room at The Sands, The Hacienda, or the (old) Aladdin. Three years ago, Enter the Night was the long running show at the Stardust. Three years ago, the Flamingo’s buffet was lousy for the money.

Interestingly enough (and for that very reason), I had no interest in checking the “new” Paradise Garden Buffet out but the requests for info as well as the buzz have been overwhelming. I not only enjoyed it, but I’ll be a regular.

While I’m on the topic and since people ask: I do request and accept media comps for shows, but pay my own way into restaurants. Neither influences a review. The majority of my reviews are pretty positive, but that is to be expected as I give priority to longer running shows that have proven themselves and dining establishments that are known good values.
