Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Just as Celine joined the ranks of permanent Las Vegas headliners so she could be home every night to raise her child, Toni Braxton is doing the same with her new “permanent headliner” status at The Flamingo where she replaces Aretha Franklin.

After a fierce bidding war, The Tropicana has finally been sold. Just as I have predicted repeatedly in our free streaming broadcast/podcast (click to listen to all archives), the Trop is going to be around for a while. New owners Columbia Sussex Corp. hint at quite a bit of construction and upgrading, but no plans to implode and start over.

This is great news for budget travelers who have enjoyed the hotel’s great location and lower priced rooms. For those of you that prefer more upscale accommodations, don’t worry: Las Vegas has about 40,000 hot, new high-end rooms coming online in the next 4-5 years.

Current Giveaways!

Book Signing – Our good friend Brian Rouff, author of the best-selling Las Vegas novels “Dice Angel and “Money Shot,” will be signing books at Rejavanate Coffee Lounge, 3300 E. Flamingo Road, on Sunday, June 4, from 2 – 5 PM (Google Maps link). These are two great books. If you have a copy, stop by and get it signed. If you don’t, these are required Las Vegas based fiction reading.

Pass This One Around – The Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook recently posted their ever popular NFL games of the year. This includes all the Sunday night, Monday night, and other marquee match-ups throughout the entire season. The SuperBook also posted the entire first week’s schedule just a month ago. More than 95 games were posted early. “This gives our guests the opportunity to wager on a particular game even though they might not be in Las Vegas on game day,” says Jay Kornegay, executive director of the Superbook.

These lines will remain open for wagering throughout the entire season with the SuperBook staff updating them every Sunday once the season starts. In this case, maybe the early bird does get the worm.

Gambling Talk: Video Slots – Regis’ Cash Club – with Victor H. Royer. It had to happen as well. “Mr. Showbiz” has his own slot machine. And what a game it is. Not only is this game a progressive, but it combines a multi-line reel slot machine with a video slot machine and video bonus screens – four bonus screens, to be exact! Plus, of course, the progressive jackpot which starts at a respectably “cool” $1 million. The machine itself is very tall and very distinctive and you can’t miss it. Here’s how the game works: Click to Read Complete Article

Hello From Las Vegas! And a very, very Happy New year to all! Reviewed December 2005
Nancy Hruska

la reve wynn las vegas cirque soleil dragonAn escape from consciousness to the more colorful subconscious joined by love, hate, joy, pain, and all the bizarre characters a less than perfect world has to offer… This is Le Reve. Oh Franco, this one really hits home.

Le Reve, created by former Cirque du Soleil creative heavyweight Franco Dragone, is thoughtfully built upon a premise every human can embrace- The Dream. The show’s subtitle, “A Small Collection of Imperfect Dreams,” becomes apparent not only scene to scene, but for the real world as well- a reflection of our own imperfect or impeccable dispositions. Ohioan Wins Wheel of Fortune at Imperial Palace – Thanksgiving vacationer hits quarter Megajackpot for $448,714.95. Five spins of a Wheel of Fortune machine at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino and Jennifer Peculis was in shock: she had just won $448,714.95. The 28-year-old Ohioan and her fiance, Ben, had enjoyed a long Thanksgiving weekend at the Imperial Palace and had already checked out Monday morning. But their flight was not until late afternoon, so Peculis was trying her luck at a Wheel of Fortune Megajackpot quarter machine.

She had already played two others before trying the third with $10. Less than five minutes later, she won the progressive jackpot on the most popular slot machine game of all time. “I saw the first Wheel of Fortune symbol, then up came the second and by the time the third came up it was a blur,” Peculis said. She was so excited, she didn’t even realize at first how much she had won. Peculis said she plans to pay off her house, her car and student loans, “And still have a lot left over,” she added. Featured Story: Platters, Drifters, Coasters

The Platters, Beary Hobb’s Drifters, and Cornell Gunter’s Coasters

I was fortunate enough to have my parents in from out-of-town town, and have number relatives who live here so I rounded parents, aunt and uncle, cousin and even Grandma (ranging in age from around 30 to well past retirement) and away we went to see the Platters, Drifters, and Coasters. Wouldn’t you know it: everyone had a great time. I mean a really great, really fun time … as did the entire audience.

The late Cornell Gunter was the comic genius of the Coasters, and made the original group the “Clown Princes of Rock and Roll.” This continuance performs much of the comedic material he originally created, as well as treating us to memorable hits such as Lucy Brown, Love Potion #9, Yakty Yak, A capella, Twist, Poison Ivy and more.

The Platters kept the energy level up with their smooth renditions of some memorable classics and ballads. Only You, Great Pretender, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, My Prayer, Higher and Higher and more. Their smooth, uplifting performance really left everyone feeling great.

The late Elsbeary Hobbs was the original bass singer for the Drifters. It was his deep bass notes that are featured on There Goes My Baby, the hit that started a long line of great Drifters hits and many feel helped influence what became the Motown sound.

Hobbs carried on performing into the 90’s. After his death, remaining members of his group continue the legacy. Radio staples such as This Magic Moment, Save the Last Dance For Me, Under the Boardwalk, There Goes My Baby and more spring to life in front of your eyes.

As noted, these aren’t the original member versions of the groups. Death and time have retired many of the greats who made the music famous. These continuations have various ties to the originals, and keep the tradition alive with sharp outfits, the great choreographed moves famous during this era, and a top-notch level of professionalism and showmanship.

Whether this is the “soundtrack of your life” or you’ve just always enjoyed these time-tested classics, The Platters, Beary Hobb’s Drifters, and Cornell Gunter’s Coasters show is well worth enjoying.

Featured Story: Ted Sherman’s Las Vegas Thoughts

Cabbie Savvy – Many senior visitors gripe about Vegas taxis. Some cabbies use the long way from the airport to Strip hotels. They take the airport tunnel to I-15, and 20 long minutes later arrive at the hotel. The cabbies may tell you it avoids heavy street traffic, but instead of a $10 fare through non-highway streets, the cost can be $20+.So, when you hop a taxi at the airport, just say, “Hey, don’t use the tunnel”. Also be aware that the extra fee added to your bill is for leaving the airport into Vegas. Don’t be charged an extra fee for returning to the airport for departure.

Vegas cabbies don’t look forward to later this year. New links in the city’s monorail system will connect MGM to many hotels four miles along the Strip to the Sahara. As if taxi guys don’t have enough to worry about, there’s talk of extending the monorail to the airport.

Remember When – Dick Smothers recalls his first Las Vegas job with brother Tom…would you believe…40 years ago! Then in their early 20s, and having only performed for high school and college audiences, the Smothers Brothers weren’t sure their material was sophisticated enough for Las Vegas. They were the opening act for star Juliet Prowse at the Flamingo, and were an instant hit. To this day, after decades of award-winning TV and live performance success, they’ve never had to change their off-the-wall concepts of comedy and music.

Dick says knew he had become a star when Frank Sinatra introduced him to the audience during Frank’s performance at Caesar’s Palace. The Smothers Brothers, popular as ever, star at the Las Vegas Hilton May 6 through June 1, August 26 through September 14, and October 28 through November 16. Hello from Las Vegas! We visited the Crazy Girls show last week. We haven’t seen it since comedian Joe Trammel took over hosting duties. The show dancers are now even a more risquÚ. Plus, Trammel spoofs everthing from Richard Simmons to Lord Of The Dance and his quick-paced comedy was great.

Crazy Girls is a must for “guys night out” but still plenty sensual enough for couples. The night we went, couples made up the bulk of the audience, including one who had been married for over 50 years! Talk about keeping spice in the marriage! Featured Review: Hypnolarious Starring Terry Stokes

Hypnotist shows conjure up all kinds of ideas, especially to those who have never attended one. Am I going to be put under a crazy trance? Are people going to take their clothes off? Is this some kind of mystic seance?

Put those crazy notions aside and get ready to laugh and laugh and laugh when you go see Hypnolarious starring Terry Stokes. Yes, Stokes is a premier hypnotist but more importantly he is a funny guy. He’s a true entertainer. You’ll leave having enjoyed yourself.

Like other hypnotist shows, volunteers are chosen from the audience. Before being hypnotized, Stokes tells them that after the show they will find their clothes neatly folded by the side of the stage after the show (just a joke, this show is PG-13 but no one gets naked). Read More …

Featured Review: Coyote Ugly

Coyote Ugly is a southern style bar and dance saloon featuring hot female bartenders who have elevated pouring drinks to an art form. Like its New York City namesake, each night, sexy, sassy, tough talking Coyote Ugly bartenders ascend atop the bar to perform a bold show filled with stunts ranging from fire-blowing to body shots, clogging and choreographed dance numbers, all while inviting customer interaction.Coyote Ugly boasts some of the wildest bartenders and sexiest barkeep this side of the Mississippi. The “Coyotes” were selected in an arduous competition of 150 finalists for the coveted bartender positions. Most of the “Coyotes” had professional dancing experience before joining Coyote Ugly with experience ranging from Las Vegas production shows to cheerleading for professional sports teams. There is even a former Rockette on the payroll.

Coyote Ugly’s southern Americana decor invites its guests to check their inhibitions at the door, kick back and relax. Dark, trendy martini bars with VIP couches and private corners have filled the Las Vegas landscape, the aim of Coyote Ugly’s design is to knock that trend down a notch in an atmosphere that makes the guests part of one big party.

Like the New York City original, Coyote Ugly Las Vegas is designed to look like a southern bar that has endured years of partying, entrenched with southern flea market treasures and dark worn wood. There is ample room for dancing on the bar, where even the most reserved guests are invited to showcase their talents and leave their undergarments behind for the “Bra Wall of Fame.”

Featured Review: Sixtiesmania Rocks The Castaways

By David Berman
dberman@concentric.net

Every decade can be characterized by the music of the era, music that we often feel nostalgia for because of the events in our lives at the times specific tunes were popular. And few decades were as rich as the 1960s. You could start and end with The Beatles, of course, and that would almost be enough to make the æ60s unforgettable.

But there were many others who burst upon the scene to enrich the lives of those who lived through the decade, including The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, and so many others whose “greatest hits” still resonate today.

A group called Sixtiesmania, currently performing in The CastawaysÆ Windjammer Lounge, exploits and celebrates the music of the æ60s in a way that is building audiences so fast that many nights are standing-room only.

Sixtiesmania is not just a band; it is a SHOWBAND presenting a two-and-a-half-hour review that spans the decade through the use of multimedia, dancing, many costume changes, near-perfect impressions of legendary performers, and excellent musicianship which does not rely on lip-synching or recorded soundtracks. FEATURE STORY: Cook E. Jarr, Jimmy Hopper

Las Vegas has seen a real trend away from production shows and back toward headlining entertainment, with performers like Danny Gans and Clint Holmes now lighting up the Las Vegas Strip. However, the one thing this city has always been known for are it’s lounges and lounge acts. For free (or the price of a drink), these musicians keep people entertained night after night after night. In fact, the Review-Journal just had a great piece on what it’s like to be a Las Vegas lounge act at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/May-16-Tue-2000/lifestyles/13439055.html

Two of Las Vegas’ most popular lounge acts have been the infamous Cook E. Jarr and Jimmy Hopper. Although their repertoire and styles have little in common, both are over-the-top entertainers in the true Las Vegas tradition. More interesting is that both have just attempted somewhat of a jump from being a lounge act to that of more of a headliner entertainer.

COOK E. JARR – No, that’s not his real name, but that doesn’t matter. He is known to the world as the “Jarr Man”. You have seen him on MTV, VH1, movies, and most recently in the A&E Las Vegas City Confidential that aired last week. People like Tom Jones, George Carlin, The Righteous Brothers, and more show up to see him when they are in town.

cook-e-jarr-jones.jpg (11634 bytes)Jarr (seen at left with Tom Jones) has performed in lounges on and off the Strip for years, and recently made the jump to the Improv room on the second floor of Harrah’s. We were pleased to see his opening show last Friday night along with about 30 crazies from the BigEmpire.Com ( http://www.bigempire.com ) crew. As always, Cook put on a solid 2-plus hours of standards, soul, funk and just about anything else you could dance to! Got a request? Just “Tip the Jarr” — he knows thousands of songs.

On the downside, we are a little disappointed at the new digs and feel it really detracted from all that is Cook E. Jarr. Seating is done my maitre d’, the only cocktail service is cocktail waitresses, and the room is just too big and dark. Great for a comedy show, not a performer. Cook is a “man of the people” and excels in places where there is foot traffic walking by, where people have the comfort of coming and going, and where you can hear the whoops from the craps table in the background. Where he can be a roving party!

While glad to see him at a big name casino where he belongs, I implore the staff at Harrah’s to move him to the new outdoor lounge area. With the new bar, the dancing area, and the foot traffic, Cook would be stopping everybody dead in their tracks!

Cook E. Jarr plays upstairs at the Improv room at Harrah’s at midnight on Friday and Saturday. Two drink minimum. You can see more of him and his famous fans at http://www.accessvegas.com/jarr

JIMMY HOPPER – is another guy we really like. He’s been tearing up the Voodoo Lounge high atop The Rio for the past couple of years, packing them in and making a name for himself. In fact, he’s been able to woo people away from the spectacular outdoor view up there and attract standing room only crowds.

jimmy-hopper.jpg (12397 bytes)Word spread quickly, and the Luxor was quick to give him a headlining shot in their RA nightclub. RA is perfectly suited to Jimmy’s eclectic look and style. This guy is John Tesh on acid, and his music is a melodious sonic assault in the very best way!

He and his 5 piece band profess a love for any and all music, and he proved it with a set list that went from Sinatra to Bocelli (“Time to Say Goodbye”, which many know as the Bellagio theme from their commercials and fountain show). He did a solid Neil Diamond, a comical Cher (always a highlight of his act), and a superb Motown medley. He is not an impressionist — you will recognize and enjoy the songs, but he and his band add their own touches and flair.

He is still getting his “stage feet”. He’s good with the crowd, but understandably not yet Wayne Newton or Cook E. Jarr when it comes to really creating that bond. We are sure that will come with time, and after a couple more months we’ll check him out again and give you an update.

Worth the $32.50? Mmmmmmm … yes if you enjoy a seeing a great vocalist front a very talented band. If you like instrumental jazz, Motown, and the standards “kicked up a notch” (thanks, Emeril), go. You’ll really enjoy the show. Otherwise, you might want to wait. The performance is great, the band is tight, but he is just getting that “headliner” experience.

Jimmy Hopper plays The Luxor Tuesday – Saturday at 7:30 PM. Tickets are 32.50 plus tax. Seating is general admission, and much more comfortable than most showrooms. Drinks are available at the bar. Jimmy has a website at http://www.jimmyhopper.com

Hotels frown on Saturday arrivals. It usually means a room sits empty
on Friday nights. Also, fall is prime time here. While the rest of
the country is in the grips of fall, we still have pool weather.
There also appears to be some minor conventions in town at that time.

http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm is showing Fitgeralds at $59.95 for the
weekend dates and 49.95 for the weekdays (subject to change — rates fluctuate like airline ticket prices due to demand). If they can move their arrival back to Friday night, they can get Las Vegas Club (very
comparable to Fitz and Lady Luck) for $45.95 every single night.

While we do get a small commission on each sale (similar to what a
travel agent gets), we link to
http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm because they reserve blocks of rooms ahead of time and get a volume discount.
They can then turn around pass that discount along to you. This also
means that they are often sitting on rooms when the hotel is “sold
out”. On top of that, they have a low price guarantee. Not a bad
deal in our book!
