I’m so excited! 2 girlfriends and I are coming to Vegas and staying at the MGM Grand for a week! We are flying from Michigan. I have done quite a bit of online research, but sometimes it’s nice to get REAL opinions from people on what to do, etc.

We’ll gamble some, but really want to take in a show or two and tour the hotels, etc. We look forward to putting the diets aside and just living it up. I want to dance ’till my socks melt! Any tips for 3 women who want to burn the candle at both ends, swim and sun, see the sights and live it up?? Thanks!

We have quite the active discussion going on in our Coming to VEGAS for the first time thread in the forums. Co’mon ladies … spill the dirt for her. If you come to Las Vegas for “girls night out” or that bachelorette party, this is the place to talk about it.

When you register for the boards, we even keep your email private. (People can email you only through our system — we don’t post your actual email address). Past that, you are anonymous and choose whatever “screen name” you want!

I have been receiving your newsletter for several years now and I find it to be very informative. My husband and I travel to Las Vegas twice a year and I am always prints bits and pieces of the letter. Even though we have been traveling there for seven years … the info in the news letter always comes in handy.

Thanks for the kind words. One of the great things about the internet is the ability to hit the print button! I do the very same when I travel, even bringing the pages on the plane with me to review activities and get all pumped up for the trip.

If you check out our main AccessVegas.Com page, you will see we have a new site design which will soon encompass every page of our site. One of the key factors with this redesign is that is is both more “printer friendly” and WebTV friendly.

My wife and I have just returned to England after our 4th visit to Las Vegas in the last 5 years and I thought you may be interested in our opinions of some of the restaurants we visited this time.

He went on to write a great dining related trip report detailing Bootlegger Bistro, Sahara Sunday Champagne Brunch, Postrio (in The Venetian), Mon Ami Gabi (at Paris Las Vegas), Red Square at (Mandalay Bay), and the Rosewood Grille. Well worth the read. If you have visited any of the above, be sure to share your thoughts (agree or disagree).

In the same vein, the famed Robb Report (high end lifestyle publication) recently named Las Vegas “America’s most exquisite dining destination.” We, along with partners ChefLive.Com are looking at launching a monthly newsletter devoted to Las Vegas dining and we’ll keep you abreast. If you have any thoughts or comments on what the dining newsletter should focus on, hit us with a line: allvegastv@aol.com

I have no problem with other people smoking, and I know it is part of the gambling seen, but I myself prefer not to play where the smoke is so thick that I smell like smoke after 3 showers. Here on the east coast the only thing I can find is a few sets of machines and/or tables with a no smoking sign, but the neighbor tables and machines are for smokers. Does anybody know of any strip casinos (even off strip) where there is a legitimate nonsmoking area? Thanks!

Now that neighboring state California and many cities in the U.S. have outlawed smoking in public indoor places, some non-smokers are becoming increasingly aware that Las Vegas is a “smoke ’em if you got ’em” state. The newer hotels with their high ceilings and state-of-the-art ventilation have done a pretty good job at combating this issue. If you patronize a Las Vegas hotel because of their cleaner air or dedicated non-smoking section, share your thoughts about Non-Smoking Gaming.

I have read many reviews about the Imperial Palace – mostly bad. I am planning a trip to Vegas in May. I have stayed at the Flamingo Hilton and understand it is not that caliber. I am interested in an affordable hotel, AND CLEAN, ESPECIALLY THE BATHROOM AND CARPET. Please Advise.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Imperial Palace is basically a Motel 6 (slightly better) caliber rooms with an incredible location at a very reasonable price. Many come to Las Vegas and only see their room when they are sleeping so they don’t care.

You are almost asking the impossible because hotels have cleaning and renovation schedules and you may be put in a room that was just gone over, or one that is wearing a bit. A basic rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for. They don’t call it Caesars Palace for nothing! No matter where you stay, always avail yourself of the opportunity to complain if you feel your room has issues with cleanliness.

I am planning a trip to Vegas. And we are planning on staying at the Boardwalk Hotel. How is this Hotel??

Like the Imperial Palace, the Boardwalk has a great location and reasonably modest prices, a lower limit gaming, and plenty of free lounge entertainment. If you have stayed there, help Patsy (and all the other readers) by posting the good or the bad of Boardwalk and other hotels on our Las Vegas Strip Hotels board. This is your chance to make your voice heard!

I’ve heard a lot about the Green Valley Ranch, one of the new hotels in Las Vegas. But can’t seem to find it on the map. I know its off the strip aways and was wondering how to get there. Do they have a trolley or is a cab ride in our future???

You are looking at a cab ride. Better yet, rent a car for the day (or your stay) as the cab ride round trip will run you what a day of rental car will cost. Las Vegas is thought to be The Strip surrounded by a few dumpy apartments and the desert, but in reality 1.5 million people live in the Las Vegas area and it is quite spread out.

Green Valley is one of the nicer parts of town, located 10+ miles southeast of The Strip. For those with a car, you can find Green Valley Ranch by heading south on The Strip past Mandalay Bay, past the Las Vegas sign, and to the “beltway”, also known as 215. Head east on the beltway (freeway) for about 6 miles and you can’t miss Green Valley Ranch to the right. Take the next exit called “Green Valley Parkway.”

If you have visited or stayed at Green Valley Ranch, give us your thoughts in our Green Valley Ranch forum.

Richie wrote:

Well Ted, here’s and idea to check the mileage of those rip off taxi drivers out there.. and save the passenger money. I do this when ever I go on a trip… go to Mapquest before your trip and put in the address values of where you are going to go, to and from. Print them along with turn by turn directions, then bring them with you and tell the taxi driver to follow these directions on the route, exactly. The print out also gives the precise mileage of each destination figured.

Featured Review: Sixtiesmania Rocks The Castaways

By David Berman
dberman@concentric.net

Every decade can be characterized by the music of the era, music that we often feel nostalgia for because of the events in our lives at the times specific tunes were popular. And few decades were as rich as the 1960s. You could start and end with The Beatles, of course, and that would almost be enough to make the æ60s unforgettable.

But there were many others who burst upon the scene to enrich the lives of those who lived through the decade, including The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, and so many others whose “greatest hits” still resonate today.

A group called Sixtiesmania, currently performing in The CastawaysÆ Windjammer Lounge, exploits and celebrates the music of the æ60s in a way that is building audiences so fast that many nights are standing-room only.

Sixtiesmania is not just a band; it is a SHOWBAND presenting a two-and-a-half-hour review that spans the decade through the use of multimedia, dancing, many costume changes, near-perfect impressions of legendary performers, and excellent musicianship which does not rely on lip-synching or recorded soundtracks. Your tipping guide was incredibly helpful on our recent trip to Vegas. We were prepared to tip the front desk clerk, but we were satisfied with the room we received. We did tip the maitre d’ at a show with general admission seating (and a full house) and got a great seat. (We didn’t see anyone else tipping, and they all were shuttled to the outer tables.) Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is my second time to Vegas and I will be there for five days this time and just want a bigger room for my duration.

The $20 Trick she refers to is a way to tip the desk clerk for the possibility of a better room, room with a view, etc. Details are available at our Tipping Guide. Have you tried the $20 room tip? My boyfriend and I are visiting Vegas this September. It’s a holiday of a lifetime for us and I doubt we’d ever do it again as we are from England and its quite an expensive holiday (sorry vacation I forgot!). We intend to make this one a BIG one! We are saving our money up (staying for 2 weeks!!!) and want to try and plan our stay. We want to do all the best things and go to the best places.

Obviously I don’t expect anyone to plan our entire trip, but we don’t want to travel all that way and then miss things we should have done. We went to Florida in year 2000 and this happened. There is nothing worse than coming home and meeting someone who has been there and they say ‘didn’t you go to this place or that place???’.

“UKali” is smart to plan ahead. Las Vegas has so much to do and see and most know that overwhelming feeling of “did we do and see the interesting things”? Help her out by letting her know what attractions you feel are a “must see” or which you would never go back to on our Travel Questions/Trip Suggestions.

I always rent a car. I find the rates cheaper than taking a cab. Just having the freedom to go where and when you want is worth the effort, rather than confining yourself to a small area, and then having to rely on expensive cabs just go a few miles. It is very easy to get around Las Vegas if you get to know the roads that run parallel to the strip. Just stay off the strip while driving.

We’ve already had great input on our Getting Around Town > Renting a Car forum, including experiences with various rental car companies. I find most hotels on the Las Vegas are way too expensive now, considering most people put a lot of money in those machines slots, poker, etc. which rarely pays, and also the restaurants, & buffet are more expensive than before, so we have decided to go somewhere else and found downtown (Fremont St.) has a lot to offer and we win more often there and leave with more money in our pockets than on the strip.

Manyáare writing me and saying how they are rediscovering downtown and the Fremont St. Experience (Fremont St. Experience photos). Generally speaking, the rooms are less expensive, the food cheaper, the drinks stronger, and almost all the casinos are along the four blocks of Fremont St. so you don’t wear your shoes out casino hopping.

You can enjoy fine dining with a great view at The Plaza’s Center Stage Restaurant or go nuts with the Golden Gate’s 99 cent shrimp cocktail (no lettuce filler). Plus, it seems like there are always drink specials somewhere down there. We love downtown!

Hi Ted, Just got back and didn’t know if you realized that since the Imperial Palace owner passed away last week, all the cars in his collection are for sale (and priced reasonably too) as well as the largest Wurlitzer collection ever. (these can be purchased individually or the group for a half a million. It didn’t take long for the family to start unloading the merchandise.) Thought your car buffs and readers might appreciate this info.

Our sympathies to out to the family and friends of Imperial Palace owner Ralph Engelstad, a controversial figure known for his tough exterior but soft heart. We reviewed the Imperial Palace Auto Collection a couple of years ago. This is truly a time for “changing of the guard” as Plaza Hotel owner Jackie Gaughn is selling the Plaza, Las Vegas Club, and Gold spike to an investment group which figures to bring new life (and capital) into these downtown properties.

As “snowbirds,” my wife and I winter in Las Vegas. It’s not quite as cold as Wisconsin. Last winter, while surfing the internet on my laptop, I can across a mention of the $4.95 steak dinner special at Ellis Island. We decided to try it, and were very pleased with the results.

You have to ask for it, as it is not on the menu. You start out with a LARGE salad. Everything is fresh and crisp. Rolls and butter are brought out, and, by the time you finish the salad, the steaks are ready. My wife, having worked in restaurants all her life, was a little apprehensive about the steaks, because at other places we’ve been to the steaks were either a little over or under done.

These steaks were perfect-just the way we ordered them. The steak was (is) about 1-1/2 inches thick, and tasted great. Along side was a large baked potato, and green beans sprinkled with minced garlic. A beverage is also included. We have returned for dinner several times since, and have always had a “perfect” meal. Whenever anyone visits from back home (Milwaukee) we always take them there at least once.

Try it, you’ll like it.

This is one of the great Las Vegas specials, and I enjoy it myself. A reader on our message boards asked about this special, and we thank Dave for his answer with a great mini-review. Ellis Island is located just off The Strip. Take Flamingo east to Koval (1/2 mile) and make a right. You can’t miss it on the left. If you have had this great special or just want to know more, visit our Cheap Food Deals forum and don’t forget about our updated Las Vegas Food Deals page.

Craps is my favorite game. In fact, I could play it 24 hours a day if the money holds out. It is fast moving, never boring. If I play using some common sense, I can usually make my money last, I even have left a winner–something I rarely do with the slots. My favorite game is quarter craps where you can bet in increments of quarters instead of dollars. Don’t get me wrong, I still put my money on the table, I can just spread it out more.

Vern went on to ask where to find the lower limit craps games and talked about his betting strategies. If you love craps, want to read the rest of Vern’s post, or are just curious about this incredibly fun, social casino game, check out our new Craps Forum.

In Oct on my vacation to LV , decided on a road trip. This year it was Pahrump. I have to say I really enjoyed it, kinda like a mini LV. People were VERY friendly and enjoyed the road trip a lot. Terribles has a GREAT coffee shop. What do you ALL think?????Pahrump is a small town about an hour west of Las Vegas, best known as the home of late night radio’s Art Bell and a number of brothels. If you have been to Pahrump, share the dirt in our Southern Nevada forum. This is also a great place to talk about other little “out of the way” places here in the Silver State.

Hello my name is Terri. I have lived in Las Vegas for 33 years and I wouldn’t live anywhere else in America. I was born raised and educated in England. My intentions when I came to America in 1967 was to stay a year or so traveling around this great country, however, after starting off in NJ then NY, SF, Lake Tahoe, I found myself in the unique city of Las Vegas.I became a cocktail waitress at the Big Hilton on Paradise rd. in 1969. Before I knew it I married, had a good money making job, and had fallen in love with Lady Vegas. I no longer serve cocktails, I am self-employed and very content with my life here, everything I need is at my fingertips 24/7.

IMHO only the strong will survive here, like do not gamble if you live in our fair city, it will creep up behind you and BITE you real hard. Of course, if visiting here it is a ton of fun to gamble, especially if you win.

What a great story! We appreciate both the locals and tourist who are relating experiences (both good and bad) about various aspects of Las Vegas on our message boards. Feel free to enjoy reading or jump right into our Living Here, Moving Here Forum.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! No newsletter last week — I was a little under the weather but happy to report doing fine. Ton of reader feedback will wait until next week. However, that didn’t stop us from adding great new features and this week we are proud to announce our new photo gallery. Plus, I guested on AM Springfield radio this morning so things are going nuts. Weather is still great, room rates are way down. Great to be in Las Vegas!

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Over 1,000 Las Vegas Photos Gallery – We are excited to announce our new Access Vegas Photo Gallery with over 1,000 Las Vegas photos! This is state-of-the-art with photos divided by category, and quick-loading thumbnail photo previews to save you time and let you see exactly what you want.

In addition, we have a hot new “Favorites” feature: If you like a photo, simply click the “Favorites” box below it. This saves it, and when you want to view all your favorites, click the top main “Favorites” button. From there, you can view them slideshow style, email them to a friend, or even download them as a zip file all at once!

We aren’t going to be greedy, either. If you have a Las Vegas page or site, feel free to post up to 25 of them on your pages. The only rules are 1. You don’t alter, crop or remove our name from them,á and 2. Put a link somewhere that says “Photos Courtesy Access Vegas” and links to http://www.accessvegas.com

Megabucks Jackpot Over $19,000,000, Play Smart – Nevada progressive slot Megabucks is well over $19 million dollars. Important warning: Play three coins in or you are screwing yourself. I can’t believe how many times I see people playing only one or two credits on a Megabucks machine. The big jackpot is only available with full coins (three dollars) in play. The machine makes this clear, but many play without looking.

New Web Poll – Vote for our November question “What is the best Las Vegas Downtown hotel?” in the poll on our main page AccessVegas.Com

R.I.P. National Airlines – Las Vegas’ hometown airline had to pack it in last week, a victim of high fuel prices soon after they launched and the post 9/11/01 tourism downturn. If you are still holding a National ticket, you can find details regarding refund possibilities or use on another air carrier at the National website. To help fill the gap, Jet Blue has accelerated plans for the New York – Las Vegas market.

Flying Getting Easier – If you have stayed out of the air since 9/11/01 or even have not flown since all the new security rules have been decided on, this article has some great advice on getting yourself through security quickly and hassle free: US unveils plan to reduce airport security delays

Zagat Top 10 – Congratulations to two Las Vegas hotels for making the Zagat survey’s 2003 Top 10 U.S. resorts: Four Seasons Las Vegas came in at #4 and Bellagio Las Vegas came in at #8.

Cash Blast at Imperial Palace – The Imperial Money Machine will be “blasting” money at 3:30 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in November and December. Five lucky customers will be drawn at random and have two minutes to get to the Kabuki Lounge and one minute to “grab” their share of over $3,000 in cash! To qualify all you have to do is “stay” or “play” at the Imperial Palace. Click For Details

Wolfgang Puck Book Signing and Dinner – Wolfgang Puck will be available to autograph his new book Live, Love, Eat: The Best of Wolfgang Puck in the Wolfgang Puck CafÚ at the MGM Grand on December 5, 2002. You can get an autograph or participate in a special dinner as well. Click For Details, Click For Book Info

Cocktail Waitress Photo Contest – A little advance notice so you can get involved in this. In January, we’ll celebrate the official launch of our photo gallery (yes, we still have much to add to it) with a Las Vegas cocktail waitress photo contest. There will be cash and other Las Vegas prizes to the winning photographers. The contest will run over a number of months, but many visit only once a year so we wanted to let you get started!

Some advice: Photos can be posed or candid, and obviously many of the outfits are sexy, but let’s show a little respect. Good rule of thumb: their head should be in the shot. No butt-only close-ups, guys. Also, different casinos have different rules on photos but generally you can’t shoot into “the pit” (live gaming area). Slot area usually OK unless you are going nuts taking tons of flash photos.

Many waitresses are very friendly and not at all camera shy. If you ask and it isn’t a super busy time, you might be surprised at how many will pose for a shot or two! And it is perfectly acceptable to honestly tell them “I just wanted to show my friends back in (your town here) how truly pretty Las Vegas waitresses are.” Complete contest details in late January. Start shooting!

AM Springfield – We had a great time this morning (even though it was 5 AM Las Vegas time) with Sam Madonia and the guys of AM Springfield on Sports Radio 1450 AM in Springfield, the capital of Illinois. The show was broadcast live from the sportsbook at the Imperial Palace.

They brought out two planeloads of people to Las Vegas and were having more fun than should be allowed! They actually had a live band playing in the sportsbook, and plenty of listeners enjoying the festivities. Plus, Sam is funny as they come. I was watching/listening to the show before my slot and he had my rolling with laughter.

We always love to talk Las Vegas, but also appreciated the opportunity to warm up for a planned media blitz early spring that will promote our continuingá AccessVegas.Com expansion. Also, thanks to Amy from Vegas Du Soleil for helping arrange the guest spot.

Calendar For Charity – Now is the time to get a 2003 Las Vegas calendar and help a good cause. These are the same high quality Las Vegas calendars you find in hotels and gift shops at or below the gift shop price with all proceeds going to charity. See the beautiful photos and purchase info atá 2003 Las Vegas Calendar.

Subscription “Dues” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows,á tours, and golf through AccessVegas.Com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

Featured Review: Dice Angel

Dice Angel by Brian Rouff – We seldom review books because most Las Vegas books are a little too “insider” (only of interest to someone who knows the life story on the town’s key players) or “mathematical” (how to win at blackjack). I can’t even chow through more than a couple chapters at a time with many of them.So when I found a Vegas book that I literally could not put down, I had to tell you about it. Dice Angel is the (fictional) story of Las Vegas bar owner Jimmy Delaney and he’s got problems. With his ex-wife, the IRS, his bar getting robbed, and an embezzling accountant who happens to be part of his family. He’s not a model citizen but a hell of a likable guy.

The cool thing about his book is that both locals and visitors can relate to it. You don’t feel like an outsider reading it because this could be a guy in Cleveland or Atlanta. But what makes it extra fun is that the backdrop is Las Vegas. Who is Armaris, what happened to the accountant, and what is it like to gamble high stakes at craps? You’ve gotta read to find out!

I read it cover to cover in one sitting. The story was captivating, and a true picture of the quirks of life in Las Vegas, but written in a way that will entertain everybody. It is unfortunate that the characters are fiction. It made me want to drive over to Sahara and Jones (location of the fictional bar), look for Jimmy D’s, play a roll of video poker, and order a burger.

Read this on the plane trip here and you’ll not only be landing before you know it, but be revved up to take fresh look at everything you are going to do and see. Dice Angel is available at Amazon.Com (click) for a reasonable $14.95.

Featured Tour: Sky Dive in Las Vegas

Sky Dive in Las Vegas – Our airplane will take you all the way up to 8,000′ feet above sea level for your exit. The first tandem includes pre-jump explanation, demonstrations, video training, practice, rehearsal, & all of the how’s & why’s of what will happen and what to expect (available in Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Chinese). The training lasts about 30-40 minutes, and you will be here a total of about 2 hours complete for your first jump.

Additional Tours Including Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, City, Scenic, National Parks, and Adventure

Featured Golf Course: Angel Park

Angel Park – Voted Best of Las Vegas, Angel Park Golf Club is 20 minutes northwest of the Las Vegas Strip. Angel Park Golf is commonly referred to as “the world’s most complete golf experience.” Here you can enjoy the challenge and beauty of two Arnold Palmer-designed 18-hole championship golf courses, experience the thrill of the game’s most famous par-threes on the Cloud Nine Short Course, and test your mettle against the intriguing putting course.

Additional Las Vegas Golf Courses and Golf Vacations

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Scenic Southwest Tours – by plane, bus, or even helicopter! You’ve seen the glossy ads in the tourist brochures. You’ve thought about it. You come all the way to Las Vegas — why not see one of the some of the most famous landmarks in the world! Don’t by tricked by web sites & magazines that offer discount tours. Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! You guys are amazing. I really appreciate the great response last newsletter with suggestions for helpful information to be added to our site. We are working night and day to get this information up. Some of it is basic, like a gambling primer. Other sections will delve deep into our experiences from spending the past decade living in Las Vegas and frequenting the resort corridor to give you inside information you can use.

The incredible thing about Las Vegas is that we get well over 30 million visitors a year, and no two people have exactly the same experience. You may be a first time visitor, or you may be a regular who just wants to try something new and we’ll walk you through it all!

Finally, we have aligned ourselves with High Logic web hosting. Las Vegas based High Logic is truly the company you need to look at for web hosting, marketing, and more. The price is right and the service is great whether you are a very small outfit or a network of high traffic sites like ours. In addition, their easy-to-use control panel gives you (or your webmaster) simple and instant access to your hosting. Plus, they have a great spam and virus blocker. Our unwanted email decreased almost immediately! Check them out at HighLogic.com

BELLAGIO VS. LE REVE – Now that Steve Wynn (creator of Mirage, Treasure Island, and Bellagio) has announced his ambitious $1.85 billion dollar Le Reve hotel project to sit on the site of the shuttered Desert Inn, Bellagio (which he no longer has anything to do with) has announced a $375 million expansion to add new rooms, more spa, salon, meeting, dining and retail space. The completion date? End of 2004, just before Mr. Wynn expects to complete Le Reve.

So what is the story here? I personally know a number of Mirage/Bellagio players who have had nothing good to say about playing there since Steve Wynn left. We are talking the kind of person who comes prepared to lose thousands and thousands and doesn’t exactly play the nickel machines. They are pissed and counting the days until Le Reve opens. Be interesting to watch this hotel war heat up!

BEST SCENIC ATTRACTION – Last month you voted (or should have!) at AccessVegas.com for the best scenic attraction in the Las Vegas area. Hoover Dam won with 33% of the vote. Runners up were The Grand Canyon (27%), and Red Rock Canyon (20%). Also receiving votes were Valley of Fire, Oatman/Route 66, and Lake Mead. You can take a 1/2 day or full day tour from Las Vegas and enjoy the rugged, breathtaking scenery of the “wild west.” Tour details for all tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours

NEW YEAR’S EVE – If you have not done New Year’s in Las Vegas, you just haven’t done New Year’s Eve. If you are even thinking about it, book now because rooms are already filling up. Unfamiliar with Las Vegas New Year’s Eve or just want to show your friends what they missed last year? Check out our New Year’s Eve site with photos, free steaming video, hotel tips, party tips, parking secrets and just about everything else you’d want to see or know. No watered down second hand info here: Every year we are down on The Strip, enjoying it with you!

RESTAURANT REVIEW – Chef John says about Coffee Pub: “The Coffee Pub over time became the place to be seen and the place to see others. Besides the hundreds of daily regulars, celebrities love to hang out there as well.” Read his full review with photos at http://www.accessvegas.com/restaurants/coffee-pub.htm

TONY AND TINA’S Wedding – We’ve been hearing some great things about this show, the second longest running off-Broadway show in history. You actually “attend” an authentic Italian-American Catholic wedding including the nuptials, fully-catered Italian buffet dinner, and the reception with live music. Except the wedding isn’t real, it is just really funny! More details and ticket info at Tony & Tina

MORE NIGHTCLUBS – Ortanique Restaurant in Paris Las Vegas has opened the “Ovation” Nightclub Fridays and Saturdays from 12:30 AM to 6 AM. They feature house DJs playing music from the ’80s, ’90s and today. The nightclub scene in town is getting to be staggering, with so many hotels getting into the act. The scene is so swamped that we have put off developing an expanded nightlife section until it all shakes out.

ATTENTION LOCALS – Speaking of nightclubs and nightlife, we have acquired the domain name “partyvegas.com” (don’t bother … nothing there yet). If you or someone you know is a twenty-something (at least at heart) who enjoys hitting the clubs and lounges on a regular basis and an OK or better writer, we want you. The pay is lousy but the perks are great. Email us at mailto:allvegastv@aol.com

FREE TOURS – of Caesars Magical Empire take place Tuesday-Friday every half hour from 11 AM – 3:30 PM. Tour participants receive a $10 discount coupon for early seating at dinner shows. This is worth checking out just to see the lavish, medieval settting that is the Magical Empire. Read our review of the complete dinner and show at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/caesars-magical-empire-las-vegas-shows.htm

BIKEFEST — The 2’nd Annual Las Vegas BikeFest will be held September 12-15, 2002 in Downtown Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience. Over 6,000 bikers and enthusiasts attended the inaugural event in September 2001. The event will consist of the Vendor Village with over 100 manufacturers, free entertainment, and activities such as a Freedom Rally on the Fremont Street Experience in memorial of the 9/11 tragedy, custom bike show, Miss Las Vegas BikeFest competition, two poker runs, Mr. Las Vegas BikeFest competition, tattoo contest, charity chili cook-off, Motorcyclympics, wet t-shirt contest, and more. Some events require registration. More info at BikeFest

ALL THE FOOTBALL – The Imperial Palace is one of the few hotels showing every single NFL game every Sunday for free. Because of licensing fees and restrictions, many hotels choose not the buy the NFL Sunday Package. In their defense, the NFL wants to charge them based on occupancy of the entire casino area, not just the sports book or bars! The Imperial Palace got around this by showing the games in the showroom of the casino.

800 free, comfortable seats are available. Food and drink specials are served, the Miller Girls are often on hand, and their sports book is just around the corner. This is probably your best bet to catch your favorite team play if the game isn’t broadcast in the Las Vegas area on local TV.

BLOW ME UP TOM – Radio talk show host Tom Leykis is bringing his nationwide (100-plus stations) broadcast to the Indigo Lounge at Bally’s this Friday from 3-7 PM Pacific time. His infamous “listener parties” are the stuff of legend. The event is free and open to the public. Locally, the show can be heard on 1140 AM from 3-7 PM live and repeated Midnight – 6 AM. If he broadcasts in your city (check both the AM and FM talk stations between 3-7 PM Pacific), you can hear the mayhem yourself.

AFAN BENEFIT – The Generic Black & White Party XVI, a fundraiser for Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) that benefits individuals and families living with HIV and AIDS, will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 PM at the outdoor nightclub SKIN in the Palms Casino Resort. A ticket to the event also includes admission to the pre-party at Ghost Bar at the top of the Palms from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the after-party entitled “The Lucille Ball” starting at 10 p.m. and the chance to see Grammy-nominated pop star Taylor Dayne performing such hits as “Tell It To My Heart,” “I’ll Be Your Shelter,” and “Every Beat of My Heart.”

Event tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased in advance by visiting http://www.insideafan.org or in person at Stuff inside the Palms Casino Resort. Tickets also go on sale the night of the event at 7 p.m. at the door. Additionally, guests can obtain a ticket by donating $40 worth of nonperishable food or toiletries. All food and toiletry items must be dropped off at the Official Generic Black & White Party XVI truck prior to entering the Palms Casino Resort.

SUBSCRIPTION “DUES” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows, and tours through AccessVegas.com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by forwarding a copy to them and suggesting they subscribe. FEEDBACK:

M. Smithson of the Canary Isles wrote,

I know that we will never forget September 11’th but it just occurred to me, I know that you still fly, and encourage everyone to do so, but I visit Vegas and America every two years, would like it to be every two months, what I would like to say to the people of America is, don’t let them win. Keep your Airlines flying, so much heroism so much bravery, and to mention the last words of the guys on flight 93 LETS ROLL, so America lets roll, go enjoy all your wonderful resorts don’t let all those brave people down fly enjoy.

Thanks for the encouraging words! We were out both Friday and Sunday nights over the usually busy Labor Day weekend (last weekend was a three day American holiday weekend) and while always busy, The Strip seemed to resemble just another weekend, and not the throngs usually seen for a holiday. We’ve also seen soft booking numbers the past couple of weeks (people planing future trips).

I think people are concerned and reflective right now and will be for the next week. As noted, I’ll be flying on September 11 this year. No, not because I got a cheap deal, but to enjoy time with my out-of-state family for a few days. Of course, I’m also getting more pleasure out of flying than ever. It is my smack in the face to those who thought their actions were going to change our way of life. Not mine you won’t!

LAS VEGAS NEWS, INFO, and SPECIALS:

Wheel of Fortune has been very, very lucky. The Harrah’s win was in November, and the December win just happened a few days ago. You could be next!

ARIZONA MAN WINS BIG AT HARRAH’S:

Bryan Sundblom says that the first thing he’s going to do with the $2.5 million he won Sunday evening at Harrah’s Las Vegas playing Wheel of Fortune(R) quarters is buy his wife a new car. The Arizona microbiologist said the jackpot came as such a surprise, he had to be told several times that he had hit the progressive.

In Las Vegas on business, Sundblom said he had invested $22.00 in the
machine when the Wheel of Fortune(R) logos lined up. In addition to the new
car, he says he’ll pay off bills and looks forward to enjoying his millionaire
status.

HAWAIIAN GUEST HITS $2.5 MILLION JACKPOT AT THE CALIFORNIA HOTEL:

Honolulu resident David Tokunaga is the latest of Las Vegas’ big winners, grabbing a stunning $2.5 million jackpot at the California Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Mr. Tokunaga was playing the “Wheel of Fortune” slot machine.

BELLAGIO HONORED WITH AAA FIVE DIAMOND AWARD:

Association Five Diamond Award, the first Las Vegas hotel and casino and the largest resort in AAA history to receive this honor. The AAA Five Diamond Award, presented to fewer than one-half percent of the approximately 40,000 lodgings and restaurants in the AAA TourBook guides, has been the most coveted symbol of excellence in the travel industry since its inception in 1977.

“The Five Diamond Award is only given to establishments that exemplify an impeccable standard of excellence,” said AAA spokesman Atle Eriingsson. “What makes Bellagio even more impressive is its ability to achieve such a standard with over 3,000 rooms, far more than any other Five Diamond winner, which until now have included properties with 10 to 896 guestrooms.”

To be considered for AAA approval and rating, lodgings and restaurants must undergo a thorough, unannounced, inspection by one of AAA’s s 60 full-time professional evaluators. Five Diamond establishments go through the most extensive reviews.

Inspired by the beautiful villages of Europe, Bellagio overlooks a Mediterranean-blue eight-acre lake in which fountains perform a magnificent aquatic ballet choreographed to music and lights. Bellagio offers 3,005 deluxe guest rooms and suites featuring sweeping vistas of the resort’s lake, surrounding mountains and Las Vegas skyline. Each room is elegantly appointed with custom European-style furnishings, fine art and conveniences such as computer and fax accessible data ports and multiple telephone lines.

Within Bellagio are award-winning dining experiences including the world-renowned Picasso, a year-round botanical conservatory, a world-class art gallery, Cirque du Soleil’s stunning performance of “O”,” luxurious spa services and an elegant casino. The resort’s shopping promenade, Via Bellagio, features upscale shops including Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Tiffany & Co., Prada, Fred Leighton, Hermes, Moschino and Yves Saint Laurent.

With Las Vegas room rates still down a bit, this is the perfect time to indulge on your next trip and be one of the few that can say “I stayed at a 5 Diamond Resort”! Link to Bellagio information and rates / availability at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm

THE STEAK HOUSE – CIRCUS CIRCUS: This special guest review by reader Jenny Wyatt

This was our 5’th visit to Las Vegas but our first visit to The Steak House which is situated in Circus Circus. This restaurant isn’t exactly what you’d expect inside a hotel which is aimed at children and circuses but I was pleasantly surprised!

When you enter you are faced with slabs of meat and lobster behind glass and it struck me as looking very English (I say very English as being from the UK I felt like I was walking into a Steak House back home). The bar come waiting area is very comfortable with settees to sink into while you wait for your table. This bar area is quite dark and has a very Victorian feel to it.

The restaurant is very well set out and is very reminiscent of Victorian England. They say on their menu that they “offer exquisite dining in a warm atmosphere of casual elegance” and this is quite true it does have a warm atmosphere and the decor is very tasteful.

There is a “cooking area” where you can actually see the steaks being cooked which is always a good thing as you then know that they have nothing to hide in their kitchens!

There is plenty of choice on the menu and for appetizers we tried the Shrimp Cocktail, the Mushrooms and the Crab Cocktail. The Shrimp Cocktail was nothing like we get in the UK. A crock shell was put in front of me filled with ice and jumbo prawns were placed on top together with lemon and a cocktail sauce (why they called it a shrimp cocktail when you were served giant prawns I don’t know!!). The mushrooms were very tasty and so was the crab. The appetizers started at a price of $4.95 up to $18.95.

When you order your main course you are also given the choice of Black Bean Soup or Salad. We all plumped for the salad of which there was mountains, but not wanting to spoil the main course I don’t think it was all eaten.

The steaks were delicious. This is one of the only steak houses I have got what I asked for — “how would you like yours cooked?” asked the waiter — “VERY well done” was my reply and yes, it was VERY well done — I’m one of these people who does NOT like ANY red showing in the meat and it came to the table in exactly the way I liked, delicious it was too.

If, like my friend, you’re not into steaks then the chicken breasts were very nice and the selection of Garlic Mashed Potato, Rice Pilaf or Baked Potato was a good choice. The steaks range from $17.95 up to $27.95, the chicken was $16.95 but they also offer Salmon and Halibut at $18.95. The Lobster and Crab legs were market price, so it’s worth asking before ordering. Lamb Chops are also on offer at $27.95.

There are deserts on offer but after an appetizer, salad and a main course there was not room left for a pudding!! They offer freshly baked goods — which if you have room looked delicious.

I will definitely be visiting the Steak House on my next visit to Las Vegas as it has a very relaxing atmosphere to all the hustle and bustle of the casinos and you can take your time over a delicious meal. Although the cost is slightly higher than your average restaurant (if you are on a budget) but I would recommend saving those pennies and have a nice quiet evening in a relaxed and very nice Steak House.

SECURE ORDERING – We frequently get asked how safe giving your credit card over the internet is. When you buy on the internet, the information is scrambled in a way that is virtually impossible to unscramble except by the receiving computer. That computer then checks with a computer to confirm product availability and then gets credit card approval from another computer.

No humans involved, and your reservation is confirmed in seconds. Compare that to giving your credit card to a waiter at a restaurant (where they vanish for 5 minutes with it) or a live reservations clerk that obtains tons of info about you. Who is more likely to commit fraud with your card, 3 computers or a live human making a possibly low wage?

CONDO SPECIALS – Driving in or renting a car, enjoy the luxury of a condo at prices that rival a hotel room:

Westgate Flamingo Bay features over 200 villas in a lush tropical oasis style complex. You’ll be only minutes from the world famous Las Vegas Strip. While on site, you’ll enjoy soaking in the hot tub or taking a swim in the outdoor pool. For your convenience laundry facilities are available on site.

PREFER NOT TO FLY – and Vegas is too far to drive but you still want to visit a REAL gaming destination? We offer the same great discounts, guaranteed lower rates, and the $100 Rebate Spectacular for rooms in Atlantic City, Gulfport / Biloxi, and Reno as we do in Las Vegas!

SPECIAL BULLETIN:

ALL VEGAS TV: Is our new, long awaited monthly online TV show. We got a bit behind schedule with the Sept. 11 fallout, but the official premiere will be the February episode, launching mid-January. It’s already in the can and we are thrilled with it. We have a great interview with Wolfgang Puck, we show you the inside of the Guggenheim Museum, and more.

Now that we are rolling, we are looking for the following people who would like to be involved. See if you fit the bill and contact info will be at the end. Aspiring talent is welcome — this is great exposure. We will direct you to our media preview (already online) so you can get a better understanding of what All Vegas TV is.

ACTOR AND ACTRESS: For parts in two commercial spots which will be used to promote booking travel at AccessVegas.Comááá Hundreds of thousands will view (over time) and we will post your contact info if desired.

SWIMWEAR / BIKINI MODELS: It is a little brisk in Las Vegas right now but fun and pool weather is right around the corner. Still and motion photography will be used as “bumpers” (short segments between major stories) promoting Las Vegas fun and sun. Hundreds of thousands will view (over time) and we will post your contact info if desired.

CAMERA OPERATOR: If you enjoy playing around with your video camera, have some real fun shooting Las Vegas with us. A couple times a month (and with advance notice) we need someone behind the camera while I’m in front covering the “party” side of Las Vegas. Clubs, New Year’s Eve, Spring Break and the like. If you aren’t energetic, or balk at the thought of getting a little beer spilled on you, this one isn’t for you.

If interested, drop me a line at (click) mailto:ted@accessvegas.comááá I’ll get back to you with detail after Christmas as well as the location of our online media preview so you can see the full scope of this project.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas and travel from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

We’ve gotta talk about New Year’s Eve! I especially want to talk to those of you on the West coast who are within driving distance. You have a golden opportunity this year that I’ve never seen before, and we probably won’t see again. Because a fair number of people from the East coast are too concerned about long-haul flights to come out, rooms are not only still available for New Year’s Eve, but cheaper than in years past.

Plus, those of you that drive in really have the advantage because you can stay off The Strip. There are thousands of rooms (some in casinos, some not) within a few blocks of The Strip as well the “local’s” casinos. What’s it going to be this year, another year of watching Dick Clark and people in New York City freeze to death on tape delay (it’s 9 PM here when midnight strikes there) or being in the middle of this party:

At midnight on December 31, the city will celebrate with a spectacular fireworks show billed as “America’s Party: Las Vegas New Year 2002.” A five-mile stretch of sky above the Las Vegas Strip will be transformed into the canvas for a feat of pyrotechnic mastery. Fireworks with names like Comets, Plumes and Oscillating Flares will illuminate the sky above the Las Vegas Strip, for seven minutes and 11 seconds.

Don’t take my word for it. Our photos from last year are at http://www.las-vegas-new-years-eve.com and we have booking info there as well. One note: most hotels are requiring that you stay at least Dec. 28 – Jan. 1 (4 nights or more) so remember to enter those dates for maximum availability. If last year was any indication, you don’t want to miss this one!

New casinos are opening — the party doesn’t stop in Las Vegas! The Palms recently opened, and must be seen to be believed. Upscale with the feel suited to South Florida, this new resort is kitty-corner from The Rio just off The Strip. Of particular note is the Ghostbar lounge, one of the most amazing views of The Strip in town. Green Valley Ranch opens in a matter of hours (as I write this), so we’ll size it up in the future. We have links to info on both hotels at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-other.htm

Speaking of, we were at the grand reopening of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in The Forum Shops (Caesars Palace) a couple of weeks ago. The food is superb, the atmosphere fantastic, and Puck and his staff (as always) the gracious hosts.

I’d tell you more about it, but instead we are going to show it to you in the premiere episode of All Vegas TV in January. Including an interview with Mr. Puck conducted by our very own Elizabeth Rizzo. We are still looking for great additional people who want to get involved with All Vegas TV.

Puck is offering a free bottle of wine at his Las Vegas restaurants Spago (702-369-6300), Lupo (702-740-5522), Postrio (702-796-1110), and Chinois (702-737-9700) with every meal in December. Simply inform the hostess when making reservations or upon arrival.

Cheval (mentioned last issue, archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/01-11-07.htm ) is drawing great reviews all around. If you like Cirque du Soleil style entertainment, enjoy horses, or appreciate a good show this is one to see before the run ends!

Attendance at Comdex was reported to be way off — as little as 1/2 of the usual 250,000 people due to terrorism fears and the bottom falling out on all those crazy Dot Com companies. (Funny, here in the internet travel business, we did business the old fashioned way. We sold a good, real product at a great price. We’re still here and growing). Anyway, I digress!

I have mixed thoughts on this. Yes, it is good to expose Las Vegas to as many people as possible with conventions. But hotels have to charge top dollar for hotels during Comdex to make up for the fact that computer industry people are least likely to gamble. This ties up rooms, and drives up rates during a November week we usually have flawless weather (highs around 75-80) and depriving the regular visitors of the ability to get a room that week.

Sheena Easton is returning to the Las Vegas Hilton, where she had a great run this summer. My review and ticket information are at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/sheena-easton-las-vegas-hilton.htm

Tours have resumed at Hoover Dam, but unfortunately the $25, one hour “hard hat” tour was a casualty of the new security precautions. Having the pleasure of taking the hard hat tour last year, I can understand why. They took you into the bowels of the dam and quite a bit of the operation. Hoover Dam is still a marvel that must be seen in real life. Visitors are allowed (and tours conducted) during daylight hours. Go earlier in the day to avoid crowds.

Nevada’s jobless rate was the highest in the nation last month. Quit moving here (unless you are retired or independently wealthy) until things get better. As you can imagine, longtime residents with a work history here are going to be hired back before someone new and Las Vegas is no fun when you are struggling with cash.

The Bootlegger Restaurant continues to be a local secret, but obviously not for long. Nevada Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt and her husband “Blackie” run the family owned Italian eatery and are joined by “Sonny” King every Friday and Saturday evening at 10 PM for a true, free-form, old style Las Vegas lounge show. Lorraine and Sonny sing while Blackie plays the piano. Although not of that era (I’m 36), it is a fun, relaxing time to enjoy quality entertainment that brings Las Vegas’ past to the present.

Word is getting around. Last Friday, John Ratzenberger (Cliff Clavin on Cheers) was enjoying the show. A few weeks ago, Hugh Hefner and his seven girlfriends (Mandi, Brandi, Candi, Sandi … or something like that) stopped by for dinner. The Bootlegger is easy to find. Simply drive south on the Strip past Vacation Village and go a couple more miles The Bootlegger sits just south of the Belz Factory Outlet Mall on your left. Lorraine, Blackie, and Sonny start the show around 10 PM and perform 3-4 hours.

EDITOR’S NOTES: We’ll be somewhat back to “normal” this week, although the letters section will feature notes I received regarding the tragedy. I want to encourage you to take advantage of the lower hotel rates and the opportunity to go about your business and show that we won’t be put in fear of our way of life.

Hotel rates are down. The lines at vacation destinations are shorter, the traffic isn’t bad. In fact, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is: We are going to give $1 to the Red Cross for every room night you readers book now through Sept. 26, 2001. No catch, you still get to take advantage of our rebate spectacular, and the guaranteed low rates! Full details at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm

It doesn’t even have to be Las Vegas. It can be any one of the 150+ cities we book. Worried about getting a flight (or don’t want to fly)? Drive to Atlantic City, Biloxi, Charleston, Florida (Space Coast, West Palm, Lauderdale, Miami, The Keys, Ft. Myers, or Panama City Beach), Gatlinburg, Hilton Head, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Williamsburg, or Yellowstone (just to mention a few).

Why are we doing this? We feel terrible for the thousands of lives lost in the World Trade Center tragedy. We also feel for the tens of thousands in the hospitality and travel industry who have been laid off. These are hard working people just like you and I, many with families to feed. If you need to get away for the weekend, week, or were thinking about booking a trip for later this year, this is the time to get great rates and show you support at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm

FEATURE STORY: Harley-Davidson Cafe

While coincidence, it seem fitting to be talking about a restaurant which commemorates a legendary American product and has a decidedly patriotic theme and red, white, and blue decor.

This is one of the more successful theme eateries in Las Vegas. Country Star Cafe, Dive!, Race Rock and All Star Cafe have bit the dust (although Race Rock might be temporarily closed), and word is still out on the new ESPN Zone but the huge 28 foot high, $500,000 Harley replica above the door as well as the prime lower-Strip location make them hard to miss.

Whether the restaurant lasts 100 years like the famous motorcycles have remain to be seen, but if you are a biker, weekend biker, or just have a “good ole’ boy” love of the US or things related to it, pop your head in the door for a spell.

Memorabilia includes seven Harley-Davidson Motorcycles displayed hanging from a conveyor belt winding its way through every area of the Cafe. On one wall is a 40′ x 40 American Flag, made from 44,000 chain links and weighing over 7 tons. A theme restaurant must have that celebrity connection, and the Cafe has famous bikes on display which include “Captain America” from the movie Easy Rider as well as Harley motorcycles and memorabilia from celebrities such as Elvis, Ann-Margret, and Billy Joel.

This is a themed restaurant which means the emphasis is more on memoribilia and surroundings (read: the food isn’t bargain-priced but has really cutsy names). However, the quality was good and they don’t skimp on the portions. My only complaint was that everything seemed a little on the salty side, but not terribly so.

They have a very complete menu, and house specialties include:

The Harley Hog Sandwich: Carolina pulled pork sandwich with French fries and Coleslaw $10.25

Chicken Pot Pie: Chicken and vegetables topped with a pastry crust $13.50

Homestyle Meatloaf: With broccoli, mashed potatoes and brown gravy $11.25

Kellogg’s CornFlake Coated Chicken Fingers: Chicken tenders served with your choice of Original, Honey-BBQ or Buffalo Style sauce $7.50

BBQ Baby Back Ribs: House-smoked ribs with baked beans and cole slaw $19.95

Vegetarian Wrap Sandwich: Grilled and roasted carrots, zucchini and yellow squash, with a basil pesto, wrapped in a spinach tortilla. Served with seasonal fruit $8.75

Georgia House Salad: Assorted lettuces with bacon, chunks of blue cheese and candied pecans with a vinaigrette dressing $8.95

Warm Chocolate Chip Toll House Cookie Pie: With vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate syrup $5.95

Tank full of Sundae: served with three scoops of ice cream, whipped cream, a whole banana, lotsa fixins’ and your choice of hot chocolate or butterscotch $7.95

The Harley-Davidson Cafe is located between The Aladdin and MGM, across from Holiday Inn Boardwalk on the lower Strip. They open at 11:00 AM daily, closing at 11:00 PM on weeknights and midnight on Sunday. Their number is (702) 740-4555 and they accept all major credit cards.

EDITORS NOTE: I was swamped with letters this past week. Although not able to respond to every letter I always read them all and appreciate them. I’m going to post a representative sample here. They all have to do with my last newsletter and the events of last week. Next week, we’ll get back to the “We liked this, but had a problem with that” letters that I trust many find helpful in planning their Vegas vacation.

EDITOR NOTES: We’re still publishing biweekly (more or less!) through the end of the summer. The good news is that the new, comprehensive message board so many of you have requested will be up in one week. Meetings this past week regarding the extensive internet video projects have been going well. Spokesmodel Elizabeth Russo is on board and I feel will be a great asset. Las Vegas chef John Guinivere will be providing video profiles of many of the great culinary offerings this town offers, and himself has a great site with informative cooking videos, recipes and more at http://www.cheflive.com

There are sites besides ours that have short video clips of the Bellagio Fountains and similar that you have to surf all over the net to find, but we are going to archive substantial video information all in one place with regular updates! For those who have shown interest in getting involved but have not sent me their info (portfolio or voice-over samples), please do so soon as we are moving steadily ahead.

Finally, we want to welcome Casino Perks to our family of advertisers. They have also given us a couple of their great coupon books to give away this week in the contest section. Right now as an introductory offer, we are giving away free ads in the newsletter to those who buy inexpensive paid links in our main directories. Full info on both paid and free links at http://www.accessvegas.com/add-your-link.htm

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

SHADOW – The new lounge at Caesars Palace tries to capitalize on the new upscale lounge trend in town. The bartenders are unbelievably skilled a la Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail. They don’t just pour a drink. They flip, juggle, shake, behind the back, you name it. The lounge is gaining notoriety because behind the bar, topless female dancers apparently clad in only a bikini or thong bottom dance behind a translucent screen, backlit so that you can only see their shadow. Unfortunately, the lounge misses the mark with an atmosphere that is much too bright and airy. This may attract the regular Caesars patron, but no one is going to be leaving Venetian’s V-Bar in favor of Shadow.

FREE MARGARITA – at Casino Royale (between Harrah’s and The Venetian) to anyone showing out-of-state ID at the main bar. If you drive here or rent a car, also take advantage of their parking garage right behind the small casino. It is steps from The Strip and sits half empty even on weekends — truly a best kept secret!

FLOATING CRAPS GAME – Former Las Vegas News Bureau photographer Don English, shot a floating craps table game recently at the Stratosphere pool. It was a recreation of a photo from the 50’s. The event was part of the Stratosphere’s promotion marking the opening of its new $75 million, 1,000-room tower. Photo at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-05-Thu-2001/business/16472633.html

SHOWGIRLS – “Las Vegas Showgirls: Making It” begins a three-week shoot Wednesday, focusing on six “Jubilee!” dancers, four women and two men, on- and offstage. The six range in age from 19-year-old Laine, a college student who moonlights as a showgirl, to 31-year-old Tammi, who’s engaged to a divorced firefighter with two children. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-16-Mon-2001/living/16535544.html

EXPENSIVE TASTE – So much for Las Vegas as a cheap place to get a meal: The 2001-2002 Zagat Survey of local restaurants reports the average cost of dinner here has risen to $32.42, including one drink, tax and tip. That’s up from $25.70 last year and $20.80 in 1997. Technically, the 2001 survey places Las Vegas eighth in the Zagat universe, behind Tokyo, London, Paris and four areas in and near New York City. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-18-Wed-2001/news/16565103.html

SHOWS PRICES – Not only does it cost a few more bucks to eat, but ticket prices rise with each year. Ironically, the highest price shows are the toughest tickets in town to get. The Review-Journal just ran three articles about shows, how they are prices, and what goes on behind the scenes to drive these prices:

http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-15-Sun-2001/news/16362859.html

FOOTBALL – isn’t far off, and now is the time to scope out the weekends you might want to be in town to do some serious sports betting! Howard Schwartz of the Gambler’s Book Club has suggested a number of great football betting books at http://www.casinogaming.com/columnists/shelf/062701.html UNLV games will be on the board for the first time this year, which will make local games more interesting (with fans rooting in droves for them to run up the score, or fans staying at a game that is essentially over hoping to see if a team covers or not). Also, the Imperial Palace is already taking bets on a number of big college games slated for the fall. Full story on both these topics at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-16-Mon-2001/sports/16545895.html

BRITNEY SPEARS – wants everyone to know she’s not a little girl anymore. That’s the message in her third album, due out Nov. 6, and her live concert special from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas airing Nov. 18 on HBO. Full story at http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/jul14_spears_britney-ap.html

DRINKING AND GAMBLING – Dear Mark: What is the best game to play when your main goal is to get free drinks from the casino over an extended period? Is the location of where you play relative to the number of drinks you can get?
— Alex W. Dear Alex: I want to preface my response by first making this extremely important point. Free drinks (chip remover), which have always been part of the casino ambiance, speeds up the process of losing. All bets are off on the quality of your play when influenced by alcoholic beverages. Remainder at http://detnews.com/2001/entertainment/0107/13/e07-246743.htm

BROTHELS – Although it is banned in Las Vegas and Reno — and 49 states — prostitution is legal in 10 of Nevada’s 17 counties. A remnant of the old West, it is not only tolerated, but often embraced. Full story at http://www.courierpress.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?200107/15+oldest071501_news.html+20010715 In related news, a Pahrump brothel (60 miles west of Las Vegas) wants to turn their brothel into a major resort. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-16-Mon-2001/news/16519550.html

MAKING YOUR BED – The fastest bedmaker in the west wrapped things up during the 22nd annual bedmaking competition at the Las Vegas International Hotel and Restaurant Show last month with a time of 1 minute, 24 seconds. With only four months’ experience as a housekeeper at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, Blanca Vasquez, 27, beat out 200 participants from 13 hotels to win a Serta mattress set. Full story at http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A47449-2001Jul11.html

FIREFIGHTERS WANTED – The cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas are preparing a joint recruitment for the position of Firefighter Trainee in the first quarter of the year 2002. A person who is interested in this type of career must possess an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification, valid driver’s license, high school diploma or equivalent, be 18 years or older and must meet current physical condition requirements on the date of appointment. For more information about this recruitment, http://www.ci.las-vegas.nv.us/FirefightersWanted.htm

FASHION SHOW – The mall just north of Treasure Island is underway with a major expansion which will include a 600-foot-long canopy structure (which also looks to offer some great shade to the area). Story and photo at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-17-Tue-2001/business/16553770.html

YOUR LOST STUFF – Most visitors, at the end of their stay, leave something on the Strip, usually in the form of money. But others take it a step further and leave clothes, luggage, microwave ovens, coffeepots, prosthetic limbs, dentures, house keys and other items. Some are heartbroken over their loss, and try to trace their steps in hopes of finding what they treasure. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-08-Sun-2001/living/16401021.html

FEATURE STORIES: WB Stage 16 Restaurant

Warner Brothers may conjure up images of cartoon characters, but the studio has released some of the more noted movies of our time. In particular, Stage 16 on the Warners lot was home to the creation of popular motion pictures like Casablanca, Ocean’s 11, My Fair Lady, and the Batman films. These films and others are the basis for the theme of this upscale eatery in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian hotel.

However, let’s talk about the food first. Unlike most theme restaurants serving up overpriced truck stop fare, the quality and variety of Stage 16 is fantastic. Sure, you pay for it (and for the atmosphere we’ll discuss in a minute), but it’s a dining experience worth the time and money.

Fortunately, those of more moderate hunger (and budgets) aren’t left out. Sandwiches are served with Jalapeno Slaw and Vegetable Chips and include Honey Glazed Turkey and Borgonzola “Santa Barbara” ($11.75), Grilled Portabella and Buffalo Mozzarella Panni ($10.75), Stage 16 Burger ($9.25), Shrimp Caesar Wrap ($11.75), Lemon Pepper Swordfish Sandwich ($12.95), and Tuscan Herb Crusted Chicken Sandwich ($10.75). A variety of Brick Oven Flatbreads including Oak Roasted Chicken and Stuffed Lasagna Pizza run in the $11-13.00 range. Noodles selections include Angel Hair Pomodoro, Linguine Pronto, Vanilla Seared Shrimp and others ranging from $10.95 to $23.95.

Appetizers include Rock Shrimp and Corn Chowder ($6.95), Petaluna Escargot and Wild Mushrooms ($9.75), Avodacado and Brie Bruschetta ($10.75), Wok Fried Duck Spring Rolls ($9.95), Sesame Seared Tuna ($11.95) and Caviar (market price.) Salads are al la cart and include House ($6.95), Roasted Garlic and Herb Hearts of Palm ($8.75), Oriental Chicken Chop Salad ($10.75), Classic Caesar ($8.25), Mediterranean Salad ($12.95), and Candied Pecan, Apple and Watercress Salad ($9.25).

The dinner menu shines with standard dining selections like Prime Rib ($20.95 10 oz. and $32.95 for 14 oz.), Cracked Pepper Filet Mignon ($29.95), Herb and Garlic Crusted Lamb Chops ($28.95), Lemon Herb Barbecued Salmon ($21.95), Ancho Cinnamon Pork Tenderloin ($24.95), Cola Barbecued Half Chicken ($18.95), and Fish and Chips ($19.95). More artistic selections include Grilled Chicken and Apricot Kebobs ($16.95), Turkey and Shitake Mushroom Meatloaf ($15.75), Lobster and Wild Mushroom Strudel ($29.95), and Basalmic Wild Mushroom Studded New York Strip Loin ($28.95).

A children’s section of the menu includes younger diner favorites like Crispy Crunchy Chicken Strips, Sound Stage 16 Burger, Country Style Corn Dogs, Herb Crusted Lemon Sole, and even a full line of Beachnut Baby Products for $7.95 (per selection).

The atmosphere? Hard to put into words, but a key part of the meal. Diners are seated on one of four unique rooms, each themed to a certain film. “Gotham City” is the set that served as the background for the climatic face-off between Batman and The Joker complete with sound and lighting effects (noticeable but not obtrusive enough to undermine a nice dinner). The “We’re in the Money” room is from the film Gold Diggers of 1933 taking diners back to another era of film production. “Las Vegas 60’s Lounge” is straight from Ocean’s 11 and takes you back to the Rat Pack era. My favorite? “Rick’s American Cafe” interior from Casablanca. You truly feel that you walked onto the original movie set 55 years later.

I’ve enjoyed WB Stage 16 alone, with friends, and clients and have yet to have a bad meal or sample a dish that wasn’t up to par. And after dinner (or if you already dined somewhere else), Jacks Velvet Lounge upstairs in the restaurant is a must. It features both enclosed and outdoor areas and provides a front row view of The Strip overlooking The Mirage and the volcano in the distance as well as the canals along the entrance of the Venetian.

WB Stage 16 is upstairs in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, just at the top of the escalators which take you from the main casino floor to the shopping area. They are open for lunch and dinner every day. Reservations are suggested at (702) 414-1699 as the restaurant does occasionally play host to private parties and film screenings.

I have no inside info on this or I’d be down playing slots instead of running my little web “empire” here. I understand it was true at one time, but I’ve also heard that casinos have now played on that myth forever. I will say this: I’ve never seen a people winning on the machines close to the ladies room, where the men are killing time waiting for their significant other!

I would also avoid playing two machines at one time, as I’ve read much on how staggering loose and tight machines causes people to take from one and give to the other. The slots at the airport are tight simply because they aren’t trying to give enough back to encourage return business. You are stuck, you are only there because you have to be, and they know that.

I seldom cover anything away from The Strip or downtown because the vast majority of Vegas visitors never leave these tourist areas. However, I have talked to a number of people like yourself who visit often, have a car, and enjoy staying at one of the “local’s” casinos a few miles away from The Strip. Because these properties cater to locals who are very savvy, play regularly, and spread plenty of word-of-mouth among their friends, they have to offer looser slots, great service, and good food deals all the time. We have these casinos and hotel specifically listed at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotels-other.htm

I agree — when you put together the low room rates, good downtown location, low limits, and regular food specials the Las Vegas Club gives plenty of bang for the buck. You can read more about Las Vegas Club and check rates at http://www.accessvegas.com/hotels/lv-club-hotel-las-vegas-room-reservations.htm

The only problem with The Strat is that location at the top end of The Strip. You do need to rent a car or relegate yourself to the Strip Trolley or city bus. However, it has great restaurants, good gaming, and I love that tower. I’m up there every couple of months just to enjoy the view. Plus, both American Superstars and Viva Las Vegas (both reviewed at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com ) offer a great value.

THIS ISSUE: David Darkstone – Illusions and Beyond

EDITOR NOTES: What a week so far: rolling blackouts, a Greyhound Bus wreck north of town … this isn’t quite the news we like to bring you but that slot machine doesn’t always come up double diamonds. We were baking under 114 degree heat on Monday … I love it! Granted, I don’t work outside but I’ve been out and about and there is something very cleansing feeling about it. Summer separates those of us who truly love Southern Nevada from those who thought it would be a cute idea to move here.

Don’t bother asking me how we deal with it … we don’t shovel snow, have 7-8 months of pool weather, low taxes, and well over 300 days of sun a year! The good news? Expected thunderstorms over the 4’th calmed just in time for fireworks. One note: Stratosphere got their fireworks info to me too late to include last issue. Next year if I have not heard anything, I’ll get on the phone and check with them myself.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

BUS CRASH – Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first. 37 people were injured early Tuesday morning when a Greyhound Bus went off the road and rolled when it failed to negotiate the off ramp. This happened in Glendale, NV (basically a highway offramp 30 miles north of town). Early word is that the driver may have been falling asleep more than once in the middle of the night. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-04-Wed-2001/news/16466814.html

BLACKOUTS – We are doing our California imitation. Nevada Power thought they had purchased the rights to enough power this summer, but record temperatures hit across the West. Only 10,000 customers lost power for 45 minutes (not bad for a metro area of 1.3 million people). For those of you prone to worry, the tourist areas won’t go dark in any future events. In fact, the Strip casinos helped out by running off their backup generators which helped keep the lights on for more residents that otherwise would have happened. NEW YEAR’S EVE – What am I talking about this in July when many of you are having pool parties? Because if you want to attend the singular party of the year without paying 5 times the going weekend rate for a room (or not getting one at all — some hotels already showing “sold out”), you need to think about booking now. You are still going to pay 3 times the normal, but save your pennies: this party is worth it. Don’t take my word for it — check out our complete photo archive from last year at http://www.las-vegas-new-years-eve.com featuring the buildup, the aftermath, the happy couples, the crazies, and (of course) the pretty girls.

BETTING BAN DEAD! – Sen. Harry Reid has stopped worrying about a ban on college sports betting being passed by Congress this year. “The bill won’t pass out of Congress,” Reid, D-Nev., said Monday. “We’ll kill it. I am confident. I wasn’t confident last year but I am now. It has lost support.” Nevada allows wagering on professional and college sports but not on high school and Olympic Games. No other state allows wagering on college sports. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-03-Tue-2001/news/16456031.html Start thinking about those college football games you are going to be betting on when you visit this fall!

HAVE YOUR LAS VEGAS WEDDING ON TV! – I just talked to the producers of new series for the Travel Channel entitled “Two For Las Vegas.” They are looking for fun and interesting couples to be featured on a national television show. You must already have wedding plans confirmed for July 9th through the end of September 2001. The more unusual, the better, but traditional is fine too! If you are interested please send an email to (click) mailto:twoforlasvegas@filmgarden.net — and request an application. Selected applicants will be notified approximately a week before their actual wedding date. Best of luck!

CAESARS OVERHAUL – Caesars Palace has a new tower, new facade, new “hip” lounge, and more. The 1/2 billion dollar renovation is an attempt to restore Caesars to the prominence it had on The Strip two decades ago. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jun-24-Sun-2001/business/16373504.html

SHOPPING IN VEGAS – Casinos no longer are the only place to drop a bundle in Las Vegas. The megaresorts that dominate the city’s neon-splashed Strip are locked in an escalating competition to land retailing’s most exclusive names and show them off in extravagant environments that re-create ancient Rome, Marrakech or the canals of Venice. Story at http://www.sltrib.com/07012001/business/109958.htm

3 MILLION WEDDINGS – Only the ministers were authentic at Tuesday’s celebration commemorating the 3 millionth Las Vegas wedding. Everything else, including the hoards of celebrity look-alikes and even the weddings themselves, were in typical Vegas style: gaudy beyond belief. Three couples, the 3 millionth wedding registered and the ones before and after, were invited back to Las Vegas to re-create their ceremonies, flanked by eight Las Vegas showgirls in full garb. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-04-Wed-2001/news/16467469.html

HOTEL LOBBIES – Twenty years ago would Strip hotel lobbies have been part of their trip? “It didn’t even enter my mind,” said Scardina, who visited Las Vegas years prior. “We were strictly here to gamble.” But Las Vegas has changed. And along with excessively European-themed resorts came the evolution of the hotel lobbies, which in many ways have become destinations themselves.

TEACHER SHORTAGE – Las Vegas has a tremendous shortage of teachers, which makes it a good place to move if you are a teacher, and a lousy place to send kids to public school. Full teacher shortage story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-01-Sun-2001/news/16447647.html

MCCARRAN AIRPORT – If you have to deal with a flight delay, McCarran isn’t a bad place to have it happen. You can work out at 24 Hour Fitness, rent and watch a movie, and more. Full stories at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-01-Sun-2001/living/16336109.html and http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Jul-01-Sun-2001/living/16410446.html On a related note, McCarran’s radar control room was just named the best in the nation. FEATURE STORIES: David Darkstone – Illusions and Beyond

Magic in the afternoon is alive and well in Las Vegas, but can The Strip support four afternoon magic shows? After seeing all four, my answer is … Yes! 24 year old magician David Darkstone and his business partner 23 year old Will Roya are doing something that most magicians only dream of, and that is starring on the Las Vegas Strip in a self-produced show.

They are smart: The Las Vegas Strip is four miles long. The Tropicana at the south end of The Strip already has Rick Thomas, a general magic show that includes a white tiger and comes in at about $20. Mac King plays mid-Strip Harrah’s and will tickle your funny bone with magic at Harrah’s for $15. Dixie Dooley is all the way downtown. Toward the northern end of The Strip, the accommodations are more budget conscious, and include the more family oriented Circus Circus. Darkstone puts on a show that fits those demands like a glove.

You have seen these tricks before, both on TV and perhaps in other Las Vegas magic shows. Darkstone isn’t yet at a place in his career to attempt to break new ground like David Copperfield. However, the amazement from seeing them up close is a real treat. The showroom at the Frontier only seats about 280. I usually sit in the back when I review a show to take in the entire spectrum of performer and audience and I still felt like I was in the middle of the action.

A great example was his performance of Houdini’s Metamorphosis. (Tie the magician up in a bag, put him in a wooden box, lock it shut, raise a curtain, and in a split second his assistant is tied up in the locked box and magician is free.) Houdini used to perform this one before his shows, outside the theater and among the people, as a “come-on” to help persuade people to buy tickets, and Darkstone performs the illusion in similar fashion with plenty of audience participation.

Four men from the audience are chosen to completely inspect the box, test the padlocks, and everyone in the audience who wanted to is invited to inspect the bag used to tie Darkstone up to insure no velcro, etc. One of the volunteers ties the bag tight. In the box Darkstone goes, and volunteers put on the locks. His assistant lift up a curtain, and in the blink of an eye she is in the locked box tied in the bag and he is free. All so relatively close to the audience that you are truly left scratching your head with that “Did you see that … how’d he do that” (which is what you are paying for in the first place).

Juggler Will Roya provides both the talent and comedic relief to balance the serious side of Darkstone. This guy is funny! Instead of a plain, old juggling act, he incorporates a James Bond style skit into the first act, then moves on to juggling glowing balls in the completely darkened room in a manner which creates quite a light spectacle. He finishes off with the prerequisite fire juggling and them multiple hoops, both of which he adds his lighthearted musical and acting touches to.

If anything is working against these guys, it is their age. Darkstone probably has another couple years to go before he can truly pull off the “mystical magician” look strictly because of his good (young looking) genetics, but that doesn’t stop him from being a riveting performer. Roya still has a little bit of that “Wow, I’m playing on the Vegas Strip” in him but channels it in a positive way with his onstage goofball persona.

However, both men have years of performing under their belt and not only put on a talented show, but are up on all the latest advantages of show technology. For a smaller venue, the room has great computer-controlled lighting which is put to good effect as the audience is seated. The music soundtrack is top notch. It was apparent that much time and care were taken in selecting exactly the right music for each illusion and segment, and it is extremely well edited and blended to enhance the show.

The show is very suitable for children, but with plenty of punch for adults. At the inexpensive asking price, these guys are worth seeing now. They could very well end up like another magic team which once performed regularly at The Frontier. Who? Siegfried and Roy.

“David Darkstone – Illusions and Beyond” runs daily (dark Monday) at Noon and 2 PM. Tickets are $12.95 and include two drinks. You can get them at the box office or call ahead to (702) 794-8200 for reservations. Note: As of this time, the showroom doesn’t have cocktail service. Redeem your drink coupons at the bar (you can get pop, juice, or water for the kids) and bring them in with you. We have two David Darkstone packages to give away in the contests section that include two free tickets, a T-shirt, and an autographed poster.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

We reported on this proposed project way back on June 17, 1999. For the benefit of later subscribers … here is the original story:

Las Vegas legend Bob Stupak’s plans to build a casino with the theme of the Titanic were sunk by the Las Vegas city council because of objections by neighbors backing the area. He was planning to build in on the site of his Thunderbird Hotel which is located halfway between Fremont St. Experience and the Stratosphere on LV Blvd. (the Strip). The area isn’t designated as a casino development district. (End of story.)

You just hit the nail on the head why I started this newsletter. Resort employees are the second least informed people in town, next to cab drivers (who are pretty much only interested in steering you to a strip club that pays them a $10 per person kickback). Once these people get off work, they get as far away from The Strip as they can, and they aren’t exactly home pouring over the newspapers and press releases. On the other hand, I guess that is good: as long as old and misinformation about Vegas continues to abound, there will be room for this newsletter!

Just as Superman sometimes forgets his own power, I too truly feel like I am writing this newsletter to one person and forget we are pushing 20,000 subscribers. I woke up to that when the 20’th entry for the last contest took little time to come in. From now on, we will use a random number generator to pick a winner from all entries received by the contest deadline. As for the country count claim, all we have are subscribers email addresses to go by. We have subscribers with email addresses that originate in over 60 countries now.

The town is crowded until Dec. 16’th when the National Finals Rodeo is done. Between then and Dec. 25’th, you can practically shoot a cannon down the Strip and not hit anybody. If you dream of coming to Vegas when the rooms are going to be about the cheapest of the year and the lines will be small or nonexistent (plenty of elbow room at the games and slots also), the week before Christmas is your time. Especially if you can come on weekdays and not a weekend.

The Bakers went on to note a total terrible experience. I have one word of advice: stay away from any hotel, show, or attraction for the first couple of months after it opens. While unpleasant experiences are the exception, they are going to happen more during the stages while the kinks are still being worked out. It never hurts to write the management with your concerns when you return home. You just might find yourself a free chance to sample it again on your next trip.

Las Vegas is no stranger to drunkenness, and I assume one can find drugs in the clubs just like anywhere else. But it is true: with clubs like Studio 45, Rum Jungle, and others as well as all the new posh “old school” lounges opening up, the new reputation as a clubbing city is well deserved. Violence doesn’t seem to accompany this here, as most of these are attached to casinos which are VERY concerned about security.
