Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! You have to figure when the boss does something, he’s going to screw it up. Last week was the first newsletter I completely prepped myself in quite some time and…

Corrected Show Review Links – Last week, I mis-linked the full show reviews for Phantom and Rita Rudner. Here are the corrected, working links to both complete show reviews:

Patio Dining and Drinks On The Las Vegas Strip – When I moved here 15 years ago, no dining or other entertainment venues existed right on the Las Vegas Strip. Back then, the philosophy was to keep the patrons inside gambling. I applauded Harrah’s Las Vegas when they broke away from that with the wildly successful Harrah’s Carnival Court (pictures) and other venues have followed suit over the years including a number of nightclubs with outdoor Strip views.

Three of the most recent are Trader Vic’s and Hawaiian Tropic Zone (both at Planet Hollywood) and Diablo’s at the Monte Carlo. We covered the grand opening of Hawaiian Tropic Zone a number of weeks ago (pictures). This past week, it was time for Trader Vic’s and Diablo’s.

Trader Vic’s patio is simply a great experience. The staff is fun and friendly, the views are awesome, and the afternoon we visited had Tommy Rocker (Las Vegas’ Jimmy Buffett) cranking out Buffett and other beach tunes. Drinks aren’t cheap, but they don’t hold back on the pour and the experience is a great way to take a breather from hoofing it casino-to-casino and enjoy some people watching.

Around sunset, we headed down the street to Diablo’s Mexican Cantina at Monte Carlo. Our take:

  • DO go upstairs and have a drink on the second floor patio overlooking The Strip. Great view, relaxed atmosphere.
  • DON’T eat there. Food was understandably expensive because you are partially paying for the view and atmosphere. However, I expected better food for the money. Their carnitas burrito doesn’t hold a candle to Chipotle (a U.S. restaurant chain famous for their awesome $6.00 burritos).Service was poor. Our food arrived and we still didn’t have place settings. We literally had to chase the server down to get utensils to eat with! Things didn’t get any better from there. Go pay $20 at any of the hotel buffets, load up on Mexican food (or anything else you are in the mood for), then go to Diablo’s for a drink if you can find room upstairs.

MGM Project CityCenter Continues To Explode Upwards – Even we who live here are amazed at how fast this thing is going up. It is literally going to dwarf everything around it.

Rio Sky Show Revamp – April 8 is the final day for the current incarnation of the Rio’s long-running sky show (pictures). The Rio is being tight-lipped about the changes. They say the show will continue, but not it its present form.

Enjoy This Issue!

Lucky Cheng’s Drag Cabaret

by Denise Almas

Enter the world of Lucky Cheng’s Drag Queen Capital for dinner, drinks, banter and “all that drags”. This dinner theater offers a vibrant and unique dance, dining, and service experience. Though what happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, Miss Conception, the show’s master of ceremonies, and her lovely ladies will give you an experience worthy of writing home about.

As you enter the small dinner theater, you will find a very relaxed, casual atmosphere with a stage, tables and small booths complete with red pillows. The servers will greet you with either a smile or a snort depending on their mood and bring your drinks as soon as possible. Though the show has not formally started, the queens are already performing as you arrive. Click to Read Entire Lucky Cheng’s Drag Cabaret Review…

Gambling Talk: Video Keno – Part Nine – with Victor H. Royer. Video Keno Strategy – The word “strategy” û as this applies to Keno and Video Keno û will surely sound odd to people whose understanding of casino games is vested purely and only in mathematics. To those readers, I wish to categorically restate that I understand that Video Keno games are negative-expectation games, meaning they are games whose inherent programming does not allow them to mathematically perform at a higher payback level than that which the program dictates. Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Hi Ted,

I am visiting Vegas in May for my birthday, this will be my tenth visit in 8 years from sunny Scotland, anyway can you recommend any good Chinese restaurants? Over the years I have been to PF Changs and also there was a really nice one in the Flamingo which is no longer there. As it is my birthday we wanted to go to a really nice one but there are so many!!!

Keep up the great work guys your newsletter is brilliant.

Many thanks,

Miss Lorna Ballantine

Ted Responds:

My Asian dining is pretty much limited to Panda Express (a fast food chain). We do have a basic list of Chinese restaurants at http://www.accessvegas.com/restaurants/cuisine-chinese.htm however this is just the basics.

Readers… help us out! Where on the Las Vegas Strip or downtown have you had great Chinese meal? Drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com

Is it possible to purchase 4X6 photos of the Vegas hotels shown on your website (AccessVegas)? We are annual visitors to Vegas and I would like to make a photo album of several of our favorites. Since I am no good at photography, I thought I would try your website – the photos are great!! Please let me know one way or another – I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

Lori Schaffner

Ted Responds:

We have most of our higher quality (of quality to make prints from) available in our Access Vegas Webshots Gallery. (We’ll soon have our own gallery enabled for full size photos).

Go to the Album (in the link above) which you want and click on the photo you desire. When that photo page comes up, look for the little magnifying glass with the plus-sign under the photo.

Click the plus-sign icon to get the full size version of the photo.

Once the big, original size photo comes up in your browser, right-click on the photo and use the “Save Photo As” option in the menu box that appears. Save as many photos as you wish to your computer. From there, you can print out prints on your home printer.

OR, you may take and burn them to disk or thumb (USB) drive and take them to your local major drug store chain. They can take and create prints for about 40 cents each. Side Note: Most photos do have our site name on them. We only offer unbranded photos for commercial use at commercial terms.

Also, Webshots provides code which allows anyone to put our photos on their website, MySpace, or blog. Either as individual photos or as a photo slideshow. See our Access Vegas Myspace page for examples of what the slideshows look like.

Hope this helps!

Just have a question, I know last year they were putting a Smoking Ban in to effect in 2008. Did the Ban pass? I’m a smoker and just wanted to know if there is smoking allowed inside the Casino’s because I will be returning to Vegas in May. Is there still smoking in your Hotel rooms?

Thank You,

Linda Strouth

Ted Responds:

We covered this extensively at the time, but we always have so many great new readers so let’s do a recap:

The smoking ban was passed by the voting public. Smoking is allowed in casino gaming areas and stand-alone bars which don’t serve food. Smoking is no longer allowed in restaurants (including bar and grills).

The fine for smoking in an improper place is $100. No one has been fined yet as no one really cares about enforcing this in a libertarian-leaning state such as Nevada.

Bottom line: In a non-casino bar, simply ask the bartender and those around you if smoking is going to be an issue. If other patrons object, abstain. If they don’t, the bartender will probably put out an ashtray (or ashtray substitute).

For those who want a more broad re-cap, you can visit our Smoking Ban Archives listing every issue we talked about this subject in.

Monty Python’s Spamalot

By Guy Chapman

For those who consider themselves a Monty Python fan, there is a special breed of humor found within the absurdity of the British comedy troop. While the classic film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” carried its fair share of catchy tunes, it would have never been considered a Broadway-scale musical… until now. “Spamalot” takes the troop”s second film and turns it into a full tour de farce that showcases a spectacle that is “lovingly ripped off from” the Python”s parody of the Arthurian Legend.

So is “Spamalot” simply an adaptation of the film? Monty Python fans know that nothing is ever as it seems when it comes to comedy, and to always expect the unexpected. While “Spamalot” lifts primarily from the original film, it also serves up a buffet of classic Python songs from past “Flying Circus” skits, and includes them into the story in clever and seamless ways. The rest of the production adds new extended scenes into the story that fit well with the absurd sense of humor the film is known for. Click to Read Entire Spamalot Review…

Tony and Tina’s Wedding

By Sarah Steinberg

“Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding” at the Calypso Room at the Rio Hotel & Casino is a must-see! It pulls you in immediately. Literally the actors, in character, pull you in the minute you walk through the door. You will be ushered to your table and then greeted by your emcee for the evening, the obnoxious, loud Vinnie Black and his tacky wife Loretta. Vinnie is like a shock to the system, but in a good way, pulling you right into the fun. “Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding” is the story of two crazy Italian families, the Vitale’s and the Nunzio’s, coming together for an evening of mayhem and shenanigans. Don”t think you’ll be just sitting back and watching the show. This is an interactive experience and you will be a part of it.

Before the wedding ceremony even begins, the macho groomsmen with attitude will make you feel like you”re part of the family, but not just any family. Everyone, including the bride and groom-to-be, make their rounds greeting the guests. That would be you and me folks, so get prepared to experience two hours of zany fun. Family “issues” delay the start of the wedding while Sister Albert Maria is appalled by the certain behavior of the sleazy Italian men. With the help of Father Mark, the mild-mannered priest, they try to get this motley crew under control and get through the wedding ceremony. Click to Read Entire Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding Review…

Gambling Talk: Video Keno – Part Eight – with Victor H. Royer. Four Card Keno Continued – You must remember that each time you do anything, to the machine this is a “user command”, and it will do what it’s programmed to do with such commands. So, unless you start from the start, the machine won’t “know” you only wanted to make one change. It will take that as a “new event”, and if you don’t start at the beginning, nothing that you had been playing before will so remain.

This becomes even more important when it comes to the making of wagers, because many people habitually change one card or another, and forget to go through the procedure from the start, and then wonder why the machine either doesn’t play, or somehow doesn’t play all the cards or numbers they had previously marked. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! A couple of regular features are missing this week due to staff vacations, weddings (congrats to our writer Nancy Hruska who just tied the knot) and similar, but this is still jammed with stuff you need to know. In addition, we had our biggest streaming broadcast ever (scroll down for links) because so much is happening in Las Vegas!

The weather is in the 90’s and is scheduled to hit 100 degrees during much of this coming week with lows in the 70’s (F). The next time we’ll feel anything remotely resembling cool weather here in Las Vegas (anything under 70 degrees at any time of the day or night) won’t be until sometime in September. Pack your swimsuit and your shorts and leave the coats and even windbreakers at home.

Latest Insider Vibe Broadcast/Podcast Is “On The Air” – I keep you updated on the latest news, events, and exclusive commentary so you can have the true scoop on what is happening in Las Vegas.You can listen online right now at your computer (streaming audio). Local Directory – We have just launched Local.AccessVegas.com local directory from Las Vegas. What makes ours different? Most online “yellow pages” directories for Las Vegas are run by out-of-state companies. We are here in Las Vegas and have the opportunity to modify the directory to make it helpful both to the locals and those of you visiting.

#1 Tip For Using Local.AccessVegas.com: Search by zip code (replace the default Las Vegas, NV in the search box with a zip code). Las Vegas has almost 2 million residents and it usually takes an hour (or more) to drive all the way across the valley. The key to local search is finding businesses in your neighborhood (or near your hotel).

Visitors, if you might need to find a local business like Kinkos, bakery, florist, bank or any other business that you might need on your visit, search by the zip code that relates to where you are staying: If staying on The Strip, use zip 89109 (The Strip) and 89119 (the business district closest to The Strip). If staying downtown, use zip 89101.

Locals, search using your zip code for best results.

Local Businesses and Public Relations people, we will add or modify your listings if absent or not accurate. No fee for a basic listing for any business … we list them all. Search for your business name. If information is present but not accurate, click on the business name for that directory page, then click on Update this listing. If business can’t be found, use this Add New Listing link. While we are starting with a huge database, what sets us apart is that we can update and modify it!

Wise Guide – History of Las Vegas boasts large cast of colorful — and dangerous — mobsters. Both the beginning and end of the mob’s famed influence in Las Vegas are marked by anniversaries this year. It has been 60 years since Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel opened the Flamingo, and 25 since Tony Spilotro’s Hole in the Wall Gang was busted during a burglary, the domino that would eventually topple the last organized-crime regime to rule the Strip. Show Review: Amazing Johnathan

by Nancy Hruska

Well, it looks as though conventional magic and traditional punch line comedy have viciously been tossed out a 20 story hotel casino. Their replacements? Shameful jokes, psychic strippers, humiliated audience members, bad karate theatre, and the revival of the lost art of foam magic. The perpetrator? The Amazing Johnathan.

When it comes to competitive top Las Vegas shows, a comic magician who is undyingly abrasive with absolutely no sense of shame could be a recipe for disaster. But in Johnathan&’s show, where nothing is sacred and no act too vile, this guy is just pure genius. Click to read the complete review …

Bye-Bye Boardwalk – After almost 40 years on the Las Vegas Strip the Boardwalk hotel-casino is now officially closed. The MGM-Mirage is tearing down the property to build Project City Center. The $5 billion development is expected to open in 2010. It will include a 60-story, 4,000-room hotel-casino, boutique hotels, a major shopping mall and more than 1,600 luxury condominiums. Click to Read Full Story (with streaming video)

Purple Reign Moves To Monte Carlo – In related news, Boardwalk regular performers Purple Reign (Prince Tribute Show) have moved to the Monte Carlo, where they recreate the sights and sounds of Prince at the Monte Carlo Pub and Brewery every Wednesday at 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. There is no cover charge and patrons must be at least 21 years of age.

Purple Reign takes the audience on a musical journey of some of Prince&’s greatest hits. The group&’s repertoire includes popular songs such as &”Let’s Go Crazy,&” &”You’ve Got the Look,&” &”Kiss,&” &”Take Me With You,&” &”Raspberry Beret,&” &”Little Red Corvette,&” &”1999&” and &”Purple Rain.&” One of Las Vegas’ hottest nightspots, the Monte Carlo Pub & Brewery is one of the largest microbreweries in the country.

A New Day For Legends in Concert – Celine Dion Joins Celebrity Tribute Spectacular – There’s a new day coming with Brigitte Valdez returning as Celine Dion in “Legends in Concert,” the award-winning celebrity tribute at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. With an incredibly strong voice and fabulous costumes, Valdez transforms herself into the incomparable diva to perform “I Drove All Night,” “Because You Love Me,” “Power of Love,” “That’s the Way It Is” and “My Heart Will Go On.” Valdez last performed as Celine Dion in Legends in 2003. The Most Extravagant and Expensive Burger Experience Ever Conceived – In the land of $100 margaritas and $1,000 shots of whiskey, it should come as no surprise that Las Vegas is now home to an extravagant burger-eating experience to rival all others. Renowned Chef Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay presents FleurBurger 5000, a gastronomic jackpot. The fois gras and black truffle-topped Kobe burger is served on a brioche truffle bun and garnished with Chef Keller’s special sauce consisting of, you guessed it, more truffles.

To accompany this decadent burger, guests enjoy a bottle of Chateau Petrus 1990 poured in Ichendorf Brunello stemware, exclusively imported from Italy. After the meal, the team at Fleur de Lys ship the glasses to the guest’s home at no additional charge. This level of decadence can be savored for $5,000.

Sexiest Shows in VegasFantasy at Luxor Tops the List AOL cityguide recently voted Fantasy at Luxor the &”Sexiest Show in Vegas!&” Set in Luxor&’s 350-seat Atrium Showroom, this provocative adult revue brings fantasies to life with the sizzling Fantasy dancers. Choreographed by Cris Judd and Eddie Garcia and produced by Emmy-award winner Anita Mann, Fantasy features sultry costumes and delicious dance numbers that tempt audiences with just the right amount of seduction.

Fantasy wasn&’t the only MGM MIRAGE show to make the list: La Femme at MGM Grand, straight from the Crazy Horse in Paris, holds the number three spot, while those sexy Aussies of Thunder From Down Under at Excalibur and Cirque du Soleil&’s Zumanity at New York-New York made #9 and #10 respectively.

New TI Bridge Gives Guests Easy Access – Shopping has become another great reason to visit Las Vegas, with easy access to many high-end luxury stores you would only find all together in Los Angeles or New York. Now a Las Vegas shopping excursion is even easier with Treasure Island&’s new pedestrian bridge connecting the AAA Four Diamond award-winning property to the Fashion Show mall.

An elegant rotunda entryway and large screen video display welcome guests traveling to and fro with escalators to the bridge conveniently located inside TI between Tangerine Lounge & Nightclub and Canter’s Deli. Fashion Show is one of the nation’s largest shopping malls featuring more than 250 specialty shops and restaurants as well as seven high-end flagship department stores including Bloomingdale’s Home Furniture Store, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Robinsons-May and Saks Fifth Avenue. Castaways Goes Boom – The old Castaways hotel-casino is no more. The 19-story off-Strip hotel — which used to be known as the Showboat — was imploded shortly after 7 a.m. this morning about three miles east of downtown Las Vegas. The casino had closed in January 2004 after changing hands in bankruptcy court. Click to Read Full Story (with streaming video) (Editors Note: There was virtually no advance warning to the media about this implosion or we certainly would have let you know).

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Yes, we are a week late. I’d like to tell I was playing hooky and enjoying the sunny 85 degree days but alas, the only tan I got was from fluorescent lighting as we continue to expand and upgrade our content. We started our “Best Of” poll (which will feature a new category every month for the next year), made All Vegas TV accessible to more users of various computers, and put up our brand new “New Year’s Eve” section.

We’ll talk about all that in a minute but I want to welcome Rick “Zig” Ziegler to the staff. Coming to us from Connecticut via Arizona, he’s already up to speed on the summer heat we’ll soon see, and he loves the tourism side of Las Vegas. He’ll be playing a major “behind the scenes” roll in adding and expanding our content.

BEST OF – It seems like every publication in town has their own “Best Of Las Vegas” poll. Some are legit but locals vote and most locals never go near The Strip. Others may anoint their better advertisers as the “best.” We are going to do it a little differently! Every month on the main page of http://www.accessvegas.com we’ll have a new question for newsletter readers and site visitors can vote on! You are the visitors — your voice should count!

We have put in a double redundant system to keep people from “stuffing the ballot box.” I get one vote, just like anyone else. You can always click on the “Results” link and see how the voting is going for yourself at any time. This month’s question is “What is the best luxury hotel in Las Vegas?” Go vote now at http://www.accessvegas.com !

TOURS AND MORE TOURS – Our expanded tours section is up. We have far more tours than ever before, plus great photos and specific tour details. Whether it is a quick visit to Hoover Dam or an all day adventure by Hummer, ATV, or even horses we have you covered. Plus, we aren’t going to screw with you. Many companies quote a crazy low price, then tack on the taxes, fees, and surcharges when you show up. The price we quote and let you book online is the complete price you pay. Check out all the great tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours and really see the beauty beyond The Strip!

ST. TROPEZ SUITES – I usually don’t mention hotel deals here, but this one is so good I might take a couple of days off and take advantage of it. We are offering this resort suite hotel from $59 a night. Where is it? How about right across the street from the Hard Rock, one of the hottest casinos/dining/drinking in town! You are 1.5 miles from The Strip, but with the money you save you can rent some wheels, grab a cab, or just take the Hard Rock’s free shuttle to The Strip (open to everyone). I’d look into this one now, before someone over there at the St. Tropez sobers up and yanks this great deal! Click http://www.accessvegas.com — the special is at the top of the page.

GREAT HAPPY HOUR – What will $1.95 buy you in Vegas?

* Half Pound Cheeseburger and Fries
* Onion Rings
* Jalepeno Poppers
* Buffalo Wings
* Fried Clam Strips
* Pork Eggrolls
* Beef Taquitos
* Fried Calamari
* Roma Tomato and Garlic Bruschetta

Where? McCormick and Schmick’s just east of The Strip on Flamingo at Restaurant Row (set back kitty-corner from Terrible’s Hotel). This place is becoming the unofficial hangout for AccessVegas.Com and ChefLive.Com crew and at those prices we don’t even bother to bargain for discounts. Specials are subject to change, run Monday – Friday; 3:30 – 6:30 PM and again later from 9:30 – 11 PM (close). No take out, $2 min. beverage purchase. (702) 836-9000

AIRPORT WINNERS – Two McCarran (Las Vegas) Airport passengers went home happy in the past month. While declining to release their names to media, each of these winners hit $1,000,000-plus jackpots waiting for their flights! On May 9, a Chicago bound passenger in Terminal 2 whacked “Wheel of Fortune” for $1.3 million and change. Twelve days earlier on April 27, another passenger took a “Wheel of Fortune” machine in Terminal one for $1.6 million and change. I’m guessing they both had no problem upgrading to first class with that kind of fresh loot.

NEW YEAR’S EVE – The biggest party night of the year is Las Vegas’ biggest night and now we over 100 photos plus streaming video highlights online in one spot. This includes new photos from this past year including the fireworks! In keeping with our “give you the scoop” attitude, we also give you the complete lowdown on just about everything you need to know to enjoy this huge event. Go enjoy our new site section at http://www.las-vegas-new-years-eve.com

FREE MAGIC – World-class close-up magician Michael Close has returned to the Houdini Lounge inside the Monte Carlo. A local favorite, he has drawn raves from Lance Burton, Penn and Teller, Mac King, and more. He performs each Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 PM until 1 AM. Houdini Lounge has always been a great place to relax and regain your sanity and this added bonus is worth seeing. No cover charge, must be 21.

UH-OH – I goofed last time. Larry G. Jones’ plays Thursday – Monday at 5 PM with his free show at Fitzgerald’s downtown. More on Larry “The Man of 1002 Voices” Jones at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/larry-jones-las-vegas-shows.htm

THE VIEW – No, not the female dominated TV show. This is the name of the new nightclub at Harrah’s. Thursday through Saturday night, Harrah’s Range Steakhouse is transformed into a nightclub with a DJ spinning music from the 70’s to now, dancing girls, and an appetizer menu. Not to mention the great view the venue affords, looking directly over the center of The Strip. Doors open at midnight. Guys are $10 and ladies are free. Proper dress required.

THE AMAZING KRESKIN – is playing Silverton Hotel and Casino now through June 9. Show runs Thursday – Sunday and tickets are $13 – 16. The Silverton is about 5 minutes south of the bottom of The Strip just down the freeway. Reservations and more info at (702) 263-7777

SCOTT AND JENNY – A big high-five to our magical friends Scott and Jenny Alexander who just inked a nice long-term deal to perform at Caesars Magical Empire (reviewed at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/caesars-magical-empire-las-vegas-shows.htm ). This is a great show, and their permanent addition is icing on the cake as they are topnotch magicians. Jenny’s site is at http://www.jennyalexander.com

NEONOPOLIS – opened downtown over the weekend. Kind of. The theaters and food court plus a handful of retail shops have opened. The full slate of shops and galleries aren’t scheduled to all be open until fall. We are finally getting a Jillian’s at Neonopolis, which is good news for locals and visitors that like to have fun. Words don’t describe Jillian’s. Just go look at their site http://www.jillians.com

ALL VEGAS TV – We want everyone to be able to enjoy our streaming online videos of Las Vegas. However, with the various computers, browsers, and operating systems in use some were shut out. We now have alternate links for all of our videos at http://tv.accessvegas.com — if it didn’t work before, try the new alternate link on each video page.

THIS ISSUE: News and Letters

EDITOR’S NOTES: In the past, I got frequent complaints this time of year from people saying “All the rooms are so expensive.” Fall is “prime time” in Las Vegas: Warm 90 degree days with little humidity and pleasant 60 degree nights of gentle breezes — there are few better places to be.

If you aren’t here this week, you missed numerous hotels for $39, The Hilton for $56, The Rio for $69, Monte Carlo for $69, The Aladdin for $79, and Caesars for $85 a night. The first week of October, we still have Stratosphere or Holiday Inn Boardwalk (prime location) at under $50 a night, Monte Carlo is still running $69, and Caesars $85 at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm (limited — first come, first served).

In the meantime, things are getting back to normal very quickly in Vegas. McCarran has 90% their normal number of flights. Hotel occupancy was 75% last weekend and climbing hard. While airfare bargains might last a few more weeks, Vegas hotel bargains are looking to dry up pretty quickly. If you were one of those “I’m waiting a few weeks to travel” and were thinking of getting bargains, you can book now or book after rates have finished climbing back up.

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

FEATURE STORY: News and Letters

The past couple of weeks have been a bit chaotic. I didn’t want to bug any of the hotels with standard PR requests while they have their hands full, and reviewing a restaurant isn’t an accurate depiction when they are half full.

We have a number of great Letters to the Editor to catch up on this week and we’ll have a new review for you next week.

We are seen as a “Vegas” website and people forget that we have great, discount rooms worldwide with the same ease of booking because of the contracts with have with major hotel brokers. Every month, people use us to book places near and far for both business and pleaseure and we are happy to help!

How we work: People think they get the best rates by wearing their fingers out on the phone, or checking every hotel website but here’s the TRUTH: We (in conjunction with our main travel partner HRN) are able to offer guaranteed low rates plus availability for “sold out” hotels because blocks of rooms are purchased at discount months in advance.

The hotels are willing to sell in bulk to assure the rooms get sold and YOU get the benefit of the wholesale pricing and the availability to type in your date and get a complete list of all our offerings — price and availability for every hotel at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm

I wish I could clone myself too — so I could get some rest! I do enjoy the opportunity to “tell it like it is” but also remind readers this: I always have to evaluate the time / profit ratio of all aspects of my tourism business. The newsletter will be here as long as readers are willing to compare our rates and book with us if comparable.

CAPS (which we covered pretty extensively in recent issues) is not operating right now, and won’t be until curbside check-in is allowed again.

Right now, all tours are still closed. That is very much a shame because the Hard Hat tour is great — we reviewed it at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/hoover-dam.htm However, the visitors center is open and you are allowed to enjoy the dam during daylight hours only. This is actually a fantastic opportunity because traffic can get backed up pretty bad from all of the trucks negotiating the tight curves approaching the dam. If you rent a car or drive to town, now is a great time to see the dam!

I have noted a number up times that the two weeks leading up to Christmas are some of the cheapest of the year. Because so many are able to get time off between Christmas and New Years, people flock to Las Vegas starting December 26’th.

The travel industry is completely based on supply and demand. Except for the recent exception of the past two weeks, your best bets are to book 3-4 months in advance (the hotels and airlines have all their stock available but not sold) and use hotel booking engines like ours at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm to play with different travel dates until you find that “sweet spot” where more availability translates into cheaper rates.

Thanks for the kind words. A number of efforts have been made to stop what we call the “porn peddlers” here, but they get struck down in court. Part of the right to free speach is the right to hand out literature. I play a little game: they aren’t allowed to touch you so I walk as absolutely close to them as I can while never glancing their way (they bang the pamphlets together to try to get your attention). I’ve also heard of people “accidentally” spilling beer on them as they walk by, but of course we could NEVER OFFICIALLY suggest doing things like that.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

THE THREE TENORS – are taking the stage in Las Vegas, and you can watch it free on your computer live this Saturday night! You have to sign up to become a member at http://www.superstartheater.com but membership is free. It also allows you to watch their other special events and even take part in choosing who you want them to feature.

MR. WYNN – The Mirage Resorts boss has been looking at the Desert Inn now that he’s out of a job (and a company) at the end of the year. He could probably buy the place out of this wallet (i.e., no investors, no stocks, no Wall St. wanting answers) and the 34 acres behind the resort give him plenty room to expand if he chooses. Full story at http://www.ktnv.com/story2.html and our poll this week as http://www.accessvegas.com asks you if you have ever been to the Desert Inn and would you check it out if Steve Wynn took it over?

SAM’S TOWN – is in the middle of an $86 million dollar renovation. They aren’t totally eliminating the country theme, but with new chandeliers, flat screen TV’s showing sporting events above the gaming tables, and a more upscale carpeting design, they are looking to attract a new audience. Their $6.99 prime rib with complete salad bar (and it is complete) served 24 hours is still one of the best deals in town. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Apr-17-Mon-2000/business/13350247.html

EASTER DINNER – If you are going to be in town this weekend, there are plenty of great options for enjoying a great Easter meal. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Apr-19-Wed-2000/lifestyles/13329608.html

NASH BRIDGES – is in town filming at the Desert Inn and a thief took a liking to Don Johnson’s Mercedes, stealing it and taking it for a high speed joyride and police chase before totaling it. A related story about a new CBS pilot shooting here is at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Apr-17-Mon-2000/lifestyles/13375533.html

REBOOT – The new Imax RideFilm has opened at the Circus Circus Adventuredome. This is a must for both computer “geeks” (I fall into that category) and those who want a fun motion simulator ride. This simulated rollercoaster ride has a storyline taking place entirely inside a computer in a computer-generated imaginary world. FEATURE STORY: “Master Magician” Lance Burton

lance-burton-01.jpg (10752 bytes)I’ve seen Lance Burton on T.V. countless times. He’s been a semi-fixture on The Tonight Show, dating back to Johnny Carson who called Lance “the best magician I have ever seen.” He’s graduated from an ongoing guest spot in Folies Bergere (reviewed https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-03-29.htm) to his own gig at the Hacienda and now to his own show in the Lance Burton Theater of the Monte Carlo.

The show started with the clip from his last television special in which he was chained to the tracks of the infamous Desperado rollercoaster in Primm (40 miles south of Las Vegas). It is arguably the tallest and fastest in the world. While he was able to work his way free, he couldn’t hear his assistant’s time counts and was nearly killed. Even in slow motion, you could see the coaster missing his feet by inches as he jumped free.

Lance it a traditional magician, not relying on lasers and tigers so much as classic magic taken to a new level. We were first treated to vanishing candle routine which earned him his “World Champion” title in 1982. While familiar to anyone who has seen his TV specials or the commercials, it was even more impressive live and close up. Lit candles appear and vanish, turning into scarves in a blur of fire.

One of my personal favorites is the finale of this trick where he makes decks of cards appear and vanish. Just when you think you are starting to figure out how he does it, he literally starts to flick cards out of each hand, one at a time, card after card. With his sleeves rolled up and the ability to see each card drop to the floor, one can only be amazed!

lance-burton-02.jpg (13608 bytes)After introducing his assistants only to make them vanish one-at-a-time in his cape (another trick from one of his specials — as most of them are), he brought out his bird “Elvis” for a lighthearted bit involving a vanishing bird and cage along with the participation of a number of young children. I should note that this is very much an all-ages show. No overly risquÚ costumes, dirty jokes, or foul language.

Comedy Magician Mac King was taking the place of Lance’s regular guest artist the past week. Mac performs at Harrah’s in his own afternoon shows, and he didn’t let anyone down with a short, tight routine that left all both amazed and laughing as he put a few new twists on the classic “pick a card, any card” trick with an audience member invited up on stage. We’ll be checking out Mac’s own show soon and giving you a report!

After the teepee trick made famous on Jay Leno a couple of years ago, he segued into a series of illusions with a Masque Ball setting, which was probably influenced by the 9 years he spent at Folies Bergere. This unique trick involved everything from sawing the limbs off of a clown to making ducks and geese vanish and reappear, all while giving him an opportunity to poke fun at his friends with the tigers down the street saying “geese are much harder to train than tigers”!

His extended finale and now signature trick involves not only making a fully driveable sports car appear on stage, but making it also disappear in a unique way with a “special guest” in the passenger’s seat. This one has to be seen to be believed!

My only complaint is that it seemed at times he was on auto-pilot, just going through the motions, especially early in the show. Chalk it up to the fact we saw it on a Tuesday evening (his Monday), or maybe he was just having a bad night, but I’m used to seeing a little more energy and enthusiasm.

Lance Burton plays Tuesday – Saturday in the Lance Burton Theatre at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino. Tickets are $54.95 for Mezzanine and $49.95 for balcony. We suggest paying the extra $5 to get a more intimate view. Discount Monte Carlo rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas.htm (Monte Carlo link) and you can book Lance Burton tickets online ahead of time for a small service fee (especially suggested if seeing him on a weekend — this Tuesday late show was just shy of a sell-out) at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?cscheme=5&amid=143

The Golden Nugget is the class of downtown. While the Four Queens is nice, it’s not the Nugget. I’m not a poker player but I bet some of our readers are! Poker players, any advice? Fire us a line at allvegastv@aol.com

I don’t have a clue, and have never seen any animals inside a casino except seeing eye dogs. Input from anyone would be appreciated at allvegastv@aol.com
