Hello from Las Vegas! Another beautiful week, but it is warming up a bit. My parents are in town and enjoying the 85 degree days after flying in from the cool, rainy Pacific Northwest. They aren’t much for traditional “Vegas” (boozing, gambling, and shows) but there is so much to do and see that this is a great place for everyone now!

WORLD SERIES OF POKER – has cranked back up at Binion’s Horseshoe. One of the top (if not the most prestigious) poker tournament in the country, players pay $10,000 just to buy in! The tournament runs through May 24 so if downtown during next few weeks, feel free to stop in and watch. Seeing top players bet tens of thousands on poker hands is a “Vegas Attraction” if there ever was one.

ROOM RATES – The Review-Journal recently noted that while weekend rates are up, midweek rates are still stagnant. Thankfully, tourism is coming back so if you were thinking about taking advantage of the terrorism induced lower rates you might not want to wait. Especially since airfares are still pretty moderate.

5 STARS AGAIN – Congratulations to Picasso at Bellagio and Renoir at The Mirage for winning Mobil Travel Guide 5 Star honors for the third straight year (each). With only fourteen restaurants in the US qualifying this year, having two in our backyard is indeed an honor.

FRIDAY NIGHT DANCE PARTY – With the weather warming up, The Plaza’s street party (downtown) heats up from 5 – 9 PM on Fridays under their famous lit canopy at the beginning of the Fremont Street Experience. Drinks are only $2 and the party is hosted by the “Naked Angels.”

STEVE ROSSI – The singing half of the world famous comedy team of Marty Allen and Steve Rossi is meeting fans and signing autographs every Monday in the Casino Legends Hall of Fame at the Tropicana from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

GOLF – Golfers, you can now book tee times or complete golf vacation packages on our site! Spend the afternoon touring the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum with masterpieces from the Solomon R. Guggenheim collection and the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Masterpieces and Master Collectors exhibition features works of art from Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky, van Gogh and more. After visiting this world-class Museum, enjoy authentic Russian cuisine from Eliseevsky, featuring traditional dishes, such as

SHOW REVIEWS:

CAESARS MAGICAL EMPIRE – I’ve put this review off forever. First, because the show was always on the verge of closing as Caesars wanted the space for a nightclub. It has been given a permanent reprieve from that (as permanent as anything in Las Vegas ever is) but then got lost in the shuffle of my “to do” list. Well, I’ve finally done it and walked away very impressed.

Caesars Magical Empire isn’t just a dinner show, nor a traditional Las Vegas show. It is an experience that immerses you in a world of mystery and magic with an ensemble cast to lead you on your way, never leaving you without entertainment.

While waiting for your dining group to assemble, you are entertained by close up magic from one of the wizards. Then into an eerie, darkened chamber that transports you down into the Magical Empire. You are guided through medieval cave-like halls to your group’s private dining area and introduced to your host or hostess and their assistants.

After welcoming you, wine is liberally poured as you get aquatinted with your host wizard who tells stories and performs tricks that make the room come alive. It is just enough to be interesting without anything that would give nightmares. A lighthearted mood emphasized, with the host and assistants leaving you to eat then returning between each course for more entertainment and amusement.

I’ve heard many tell me about the Empire (all good), but people get so caught up in the experience they never mention something very important: the food! You are served a three course meal starting with soup or salad, then on to your selection of beef, chicken, or fish, (vegetarian and children’s meals available) and then finishing with desert.

They don’t order out from Dennys. These meals are all artfully prepared, beautifully presented, and a treat for the palate. This is fare you would expect to get in a finer dining establishment and my entire table was raving about how good their selections were.

After dinner, you are led to the Sanctum Secorum, a spacious but mystical area keeping with the theme that has fire, water, two lounges, and roaming wizards performing various magic for those who choose to watch. Unlike some tourist shows or attractions where you feel like you are rushed from one thing to the next, you are allowed to relax as you’d like and do as you please. (When a feature is starting, they do encourage you to go in and see it, but you can continue to wander or sit as long as it isn’t the end of the night.) Some simply enjoyed after dinner cocktails. Others wandered, taking in the sanctum or stopping to view the entertaining wizards perform magic specialties.

You are invited into the Secret Pagoda to view a featured close-up magician who had our small group in disbelief at everything from standard card tricks to spoon bending to mind reading. Then back out to the sanctum for more drinks, chatting with new friends, or taking in more magic from the roaming wizards.

The finale is the Sultan’s Palace, a theater where everyone is directed to enjoy the finale stage magic show. Featured magicians rotate, but I’ve seen a couple of these acts (in other settings) and can assure you these are quality, entertaining stage magic acts.

As mentioned, Caesars Magical Empire is a complete entertainment experience. Allow three hours and that is if you choose not to linger much. You can hurry through or even leave early if you are bored, but that is highly unlikely. The time flew by for us. Magical Empire is comparable in price to many of the stand alone shows in town that only last 80 minutes and don’t feed you. This alone makes it a true entertainment value.

Caesars Magical Empire is open Tuesday – Saturday with dinner seating starting at 4:30 and going through 8:30 PM (every 10 minutes). NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas and travel from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Cold, cold, cold, cold … we had a very unpleasant two week cold snap. Lows often dipped below 30 and sometimes the highs didn’t make it into the 50’s. This weekend’s forecast is for mid-60’s and sunny so things are back to normal for winter. Now is a great time to book for March and April here and get that early reprieve from winter.

Million Dollar Winner: For the third time in less than six weeks, a Boyd Gaming downtown casino has produced a million-dollar winner. Peggy Beels of Ontario, California won $1.2 million on The Addams Family Reel Saturday afternoon at the Fremont Hotel downtown. Beels, who had invested about $100 on the nickel game, walked away with a check for the full amount. The first thing Beels said she was going to do was to pay off her bills and take a cruise.

NASCAR Fans: Coming to the big race here? You know that traffic to and from a major NASCAR race is bad, and Las Vegas is no exception. The answer? Arrive quickly and in style like the drivers do — in a helicopter from The Strip straight to the speedway! Your NASCAR vacation is a memory, your vacation time is valuable, and you can tell your friends you arrived flying high over the Vegas Strip! Larry G. Jones, the man of 1,002 voices has a new home. He is very talented, and the price is right. Forget that $100 a ticket for Danny Gans. Jones performs each afternoon at 5 PM in the upstairs showroom of Fitzgerald’s downtown for a one-drink minimum. This guy is going to be one of the next Las Vegas “greats,” so catch him while you still can! (Gans is great, but one of the toughest tickets in town and out of the budget of many visitors.)

Fat Tuesday: Celebrate Mardi Gras at McCormick and Schmick’s Seafood House on Feb. 12. You have NO EXCUSE not to attend the best Mardi Gras party in Las Vegas! There will be food and drink specials as well as a costume contest. McCormick and Schmick’s is about 3 blocks from The Strip on Flamingo (just before Paradise on the left). We are giving away a $50 McCormick and Schmick’s gift certificate this month on All Vegas TV. We had a great time at Showgirls of Magic recently and this show at the San Remo (next to The Tropicana, steps off The Strip) is a lot of fun for the money. You get beautiful Vegas Showgirls, magic, comedy and specialty acts in a quick-moving show. The early show is covered, and the later show is topless. (Guys … hit the late show with your buddies. Speaking of showgirls, a big tip of the hat to E! Entertainment (cable channel) for their “Vegas Showgirls: Nearly Famous” show airing Monday nights at 10 PM. This show covers the lives of four female and two male dancers in Jubilee. Yes, they show the wild nights out that twenty-somethings enjoy here. But they also show these Las Vegas residents fighting traffic, going to Starbucks, and enjoying their apartment / condo pool in the Las Vegas sunshine — what a shock … people actually live normal lives here!

The Fielding West Show: Comedy, Tricks and Naked Chicks opens this week. You may remember him from A&EÆs An Evening at the Improv, NBCÆs WorldÆs Greatest Magic, CarolineÆs Comedy Hour, and NBCÆs WorldÆs Wildest Magicians and having seen him before, I’ll be the first to tell you he is FUNNY! I finally made it up to The Ghostbar at the new Palms resort. With so much to do, see, and cover here it takes a while to get around to everything! Picture a very trendy (and very expensive) L.A. style lounge with a great view of Las Vegas. Dress to impress and be prepared for a $10-20 cover charge and $10 drinks, but worth one visit. THE MIRAGE AQUARIUM: This wonder is filled with sharks and tropical fishes. The aquarium holds up to 20,000 gallons of water. That is a lot of water? You will see it when you enter the hotel registry at the Mirage, located in behind the front desk!

SECRET GARDEN OF SIEGFRIED AND ROY: A sanctuary full of exotic creatures, white tigers, white lions and Asian elephants, where they can live comfortably. Watch these animals on stage performing along with their masters Siegfried and Roy, as they appear and disappear right before your very eyes. The Secret Garden was created as a place where these animals could live free from danger. This is also where one may learn and observe and listen to their exotic creatures.

Dolphin Habitat is another great magical place, where one can take a tour throughout the day. You will be able to see the Bottlenose dolphins swimming and jumping and just having a fun time in the pool. LET’S EAT! The finest place for dining is the “Moongate.” Here you will fine an elegant taste of Chinese atmosphere. The beautiful designs and the surroundings were all very carefully chosen. They offer a Sushi bar. Also serving their traditional Teppan yaki.

* The Noodle Kitchen offers tasty mouth watering barbecue ribs, duck, won ton and more. They have the best barbecue ribs. Try them out.

* Renoir a 5 star French Cuisine restaurant, where food is created by Chef Alessandro Stratta and is open only for dinner and a fine, elegant place to eat. LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

JACKPOT – Major William Tracy had been in Las Vegas for less than a
day when he struck it rich early Wednesday morning, winning $3 million
on a Wheel of Fortune(R) dollars machine at the Flamingo Las Vegas.
“I just sat there staring at the payline, trying to figure out what
was happening when a security guard walked up to tell me that I had
just won $3 million. I’m still in shock,” he said. Tracy, 32, and
his wife, Alicia, are in Las Vegas to attend graduation ceremonies at
the USAF Weapons School at Nellis AFB. Tracy, who flies an F-15C
fighter, is currently stationed in Japan. The Tracys aren’t sure what
they’ll do with their winnings. “Make some investments, help our
families. It’s a lot to figure out. But there is one thing we are
sure of — we don’t want things to change … at least, not too
much,” Tracy said.

MONORAIL – Right now, early construction on the first phase of the Las Vegas monorail is underway. Running from the MGM to the Desert Inn, the line is eventually slated to run downtown. MARINERS -áááá The Seattle baseball team continues to terrorize their opponents, as well as the Vegas sportsbooks. Count the Mirage as one of many Nevada casinos that would welcome some avalanche control. It listed the Mariners at 45-to-1 odds to win the World Series before the season started, a number the team has pared to 7-2, second only to the Yankees’ 5-2. ENERGY CRUNCH – is continuing to be felt by the hotels here. While Nevada has secured enough energy for the summer, the prices are on the rise. Harrah’s Entertainment, Station Casinos and the Riviera Hotel and Casino have tacked a $3-a-night surcharge on hotel rooms at their Nevada casinos. Whether to charge customers more is especially a dilemma for the more expensive casinos on the Strip, where image is everything and customers could perceive such a move as tacky. EPICUREAN AFFAIR – The 11th annual Epicurean Affair, featuring signature dishes from local restaurants, wine, a silent auction and live entertainment, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. June 20 at The Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd. South. More than 50 restaurants plan to participate in the event, dubbed “The Rhythm of Flavor” and carrying a Latin American theme. WIRELESS CHECK-IN – The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas plans to launch a pilot program this summer that’s aimed at using wireless devices to ensure that rooms are ready for arriving guests. Guests will meet hotel clerks at any of several entrances, including the car drop-off area, and be able to show a credit card to check reservations via a wireless LAN connection to a server in real time. 35TH ANNUAL VICTOR AWARDS – The Las Vegas Hilton will host the 35th Annual Victor Awards June 23, honoring the world’s greatest athletes and coaches, with event proceeds going to City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute. The event will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net from the Hilton Theater starting at 5:00 p.m. PST/8:00 p.m. EST. Tickets are available through the City of Hope for $50 and black tie is required. NUDE CABARET – MGM is launching “La Femme” in partnership with the infamous Crazy Horse of Paris, France on June 14. The name was changed for Vegas to avoid any legal trouble with the local strip club of the same name. While promising to show a lot of skin in a theatrical fashion, Clark County liquor laws prohibit total nudity anywhere booze is served so the producers of the new show are being slightly creative with their “all nude” presentation. FEATURE STORIES: The Rat Pack Is Back

Sometimes I really look forward to reviewing the shows, and other times it’s just another day at the office. Granted, I’m not complaining — there are worse offices than a Las Vegas showroom and since 90% of my time is spent in front of the computer, it is always pleasant to get out in the “real world.”

The Rat Pack Is Back is a show I was truly looking forward to seeing. Up until recently, the show had been on a month-to-month engagement at the Sahara which didn’t make it a good review candidate. I don’t want to tell you about something that might be closed by the time you get to town! However, with a new one-year contract (and possible extensions), this show is here to stay.

I was looking forward to it because although not yet born in the heyday of the Rat Pack, I’ve always been curious about the vibe they brought to Las Vegas. I have a poster of them in my office. I’ve seen all the specials on the cable TV channels chronicling their time here. But would this show be a reasonably true recreation that brings back that vibe, or would I be seeing some second rate impersonators limping their way through a show as some of the budget Elvis’ seem to do?

Thankfully, it was the former. While not the Copa Room (where the originals played often at The Sands), the Congo room at the Sahara was festively decorated and very comfortable. “Joey” (played by comedian Mark Cohen — legalities prevent the performers from using the full names of the people they impersonate in the show) came out and told us that it was a very special night: December 12, 1961 … which just happened to be “Frank’s” birthday. He warmed the crowd up with some truly funny comedy.

He then introduced “Frank,” played by famed Sinatra impressionist Steve Lippia who sung a collection of hits from the era including “Luck Be A Lady” while he worked the stage with a confident manner. His vocal comparison to Sinatra’s is uncanny, and the 20 piece orchestra backing all of the performers added to the realism of the period.

Rick Michel came out as “Dean,” in character with a huge martini glass. He was perhaps was the most dead-on in the looks department (although all had good resemblance to their original characters) and had an amazingly strong voice to boot. He ran through Dean Martin favorites such as Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes and Find Yourself Somebody To Love.

Doug Starks is “Sammy,” and I mean he IS Sammy. An actual friend of the late entertainer he pays tribute to, he had the style, vocal quality, moves, and inflections down pat. Sailing through songs like That Old Black Magic and What Kind of Fool Am I, he took liberty to sing Mr. Bojangles, noting that it wouldn’t be released until 1968 … but “You are here, I am here, so let’s do it”!

From there, the show was filled with the kind of fun and frolic that these performers made legendary. They joked, sang duets, made little jabs at each other, and mixed drinks on stage. Celebrities in the audience were introduced (this night they included Robin Leach and Nevada Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt). Although the original performers had a great camaraderie, even more credit to this group for being able to naturally recreate that night after night.

If you are old enough to remember and appreciate The Rat Pack, or were born a little after their Vegas heyday but are curious about what it must have been like and love that “old Vegas” vibe, this is a show well worth seeing.

Unfortunately, with the volume of people Las Vegas hotels handle, sometimes one has a bad experience. If you don’t get satisfaction at the time, be sure to write the general manager of the hotel when you return home. If you are polite but firm and give solid detail, they will often send you freebies ranging from food to free nights on your next visit.

FEATURE STORY: Melinda – The First Lady of Magic

Las Vegas has it all: exploding volcanos and pirate battles right on the street, German guys with white tigers, famous headliner entertainment, and now for the first time in some 5 years, the most-publicized female magician in the world.

I first saw Melinda play downtown at the Lady Luck almost 7 years ago. The room was packed, the price was right, and and it was a nice entertaining mix of basic magic and Vegas “show and dance”. Melinda has spend the past few years in locales ranging from Atlantic City to Branson and recently brought her show back to Las Vegas. She grew up here, and worked as a dancer in Siegfried and Roy along her way to showroom stardum.

Melinda’s 90 minute show is really the tale of two shows. The first part relies and reflects heavily on here older material, much of which she has been doing for years. Unfortunately, it comes off a little too cheesy and fluffy, with the dance numbers almost overshadowing the magic and not letting the crowd get into a dramatic mood needed to thrououghly enjoy the illusions. That is unfortunate because the magic, while standard magic show fare, is well done including levetation, mid-air vanishing, and reappearing in the back of the showroom.

About halfway through the show, we are given a change of pace with a 15 minute performance by 3 Argentinian’s who demonstrate talent and humor with traditional drum playing and bolo ball displays. One of the unfortunate aspects of an early show (this one started at 6:30 PM) is that the crowd isn’t in the late night party mood (i.e. 5 drinks into the night), but they really brought the crowd to life and it was a good warm-up for the bigger illusions.

The second half brought out the showstoppers. A full sized Lamborghini was suspended above stage and a number of audience volenteers were invited on stage to verify that it was a very real car. After the car was draped and reved to “200 miles an hour”, it simply vanished out of thin air. The other truly memorable illusion is her Drill of Death, where a huge drill screws through her body and lifts here high in the air.

Melinda has come a long way, both with her magic and now performing in the beautiful C2K showroom of the Venetian. There truly isn’t a bad seat in the house. If there is one drawback, the show is almost as much Britney Spears as it is spellbinding magic. Melinda could easily pass for the pop singer’s older sister, with her beauty, obvious devotion to fitness and dance, and bubbly personality . Unfortunatly, it is a thread doesn’t completely go away even during the most serious of illusions when we need to be biting our nails.

Overall, it is an enjoyable show combining magic flare with the dance numbers one expects out of a traditional Las Vegas show. Melinda is very personable, quick with wit and laughter, and interacts with the audience very well. The show leaves you with a nice, warm feeling. Although Melinda and her dancers wear some very “body conscious” outfits, the show contains no overt sexuality and is very suitible for children.

Melinda, First Lady of Magic plays every evening but Wednesdays. Show times vary by day of the week, but are in the early evening. Tickets run from $38 – $88, with childrens tickets (under 12) $22. Call ahead to the Venetian at (702) 414-1000 and ask for the box office to confirm times and prices. The show is selling pretty well, so reservations are suggested.

I printed both of the above letters to demonstrate the range of opinions regarding De La Guarda. It is not a typical Las Vegas show in any respect, but more of an experience. As we noted in last week’s review of the show (archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/01-01-17.htm ), “While not sexual in nature, it is primal and stretches your imagination. It is for the young or young at heart and requires an open mind.” Jubilee or Folies Bergere is more in order for someone interested in a typical Las Vegas show.

ART BELL – The infamous late night talk host returns to the airwaves Feb. 5, broadcasting from his remote house in Pahrump, NV (about an hour west of Las Vegas). His show is heard on over 400 stations nationwide (you can’t flip around the AM dial late night without hearing him on 2-3 frequencies) and the show returns to flagship station KDWN 720 AM here in Las Vegas. NOT SMOG – That brown haze that hangs over Las Vegas is dust kicked up from the desert. It isn’t pretty, and we are in EPA violation over it. FEATURE STORY: De La Guarda

de-la-guarda-rio.jpg (12198 bytes) DE LA GUARDA – This new show at The Rio defies all description, but I’m going to try! The show combines elements of carnival, rave, concert and theater. There is no dialogue, no star, and NO SEATS! Instead, the action and performers fly over your head in a loosely choreographed display. Later in the show, the cast actually mingles in the audience encouraging general happy excitement and dancing. Confetti, balloons, and manufactured rain contribute to the controlled and very entertaining chaos.

Most of the show takes place over your head. You walk into a dark theater surrounded in black with a paper ceiling over your head. The paper covers the entire show area, and is backlit to provide a unique landscape that lets the cast and technicians use sight and sound creating a buildup to a show that explodes from the sky.

The free flowing show uses electronic music and live vocal chants to stimulate the ears as a sharp contrast to the primal basics of water, balloons, unusual lighting variety and the human form to pleasure the eyes.

The beauty of the show is that you can make it out to be whatever you want. You can stand at the edge of the action and just take it all in (keeping clean and dry) or you can surge to the center of the crowd and dance in rave fashion soaking in the “rain” and excitement. While not sexual in nature, it is primal and stretches your imagination. It is for the young or young at heart and requires an open mind. If you still enjoy a good rollercoaster ride, you will probably enjoy this show.

De La Guarda plays Tuesday – Saturday at 9:00 PM with an additional Saturday night show at 11:30 PM. Tickets are $45 plus tax and available by calling 702-252-7776 Casual attire is encouraged.

Glad you had a great time. There isn’t anywhere quite like Las Vegas for New Year’s Eve! My continued strong warnings about bringing children to Las Vegas aren’t anti-child or meant to be a blanket statement. It is a warning for first-time visitors under the false impression that this is a family town. While Las Vegas was only marketed as a family destination for a couple of years in the early 90’s, the general media continues to perpetuate the myth.

Many of our readers are gleaning information for their first ever visit and to them I continue to advise coming without the children. After a visit, you can then decide if your children’s ages and interests are conducive to what Las Vegas has to offer, and more importantly, if you are willing to think about the arrangements ahead of time so that both parents have the time to gamble if they wish.

Plans to remodel or implode the Frontier were put on hold a few months ago in light of a softening economy and tighter financing market.

New Year’s Eve is unique in the total closing down of The Strip, and this is the first time in over a decade that there have been fireworks (although talk is strong of making it a yearly tradition). American holidays like July 4’th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, et. al. are just very, very crowded and expensive weekends. While Las Vegas has a number of July 4’th fireworks displays, the only one near The Strip has been at the Stratosphere, and not the overwhelming type of display we had on New Year’s. With the exception of New Year’s, I’d plan your vacation away from the crowded holiday weekends.

SUPER BOWL PARTIES – The Super Bowl brings more testosterone to Las Vegas than any other weekend. Every bar, every lounge, every TV everywhere is tuned to the big game. Many of the hotels throw “all inclusive” parties where the price of admission gets you all you can eat and drink. The R-J has these listed at http://www.lasvegas.com/events/superbowl2001 If you are looking to go crazy betting the game, we suggest the Imperial Palace. They put up a pile of interesting and wacky side bets that must be seen to be believed.

HERE WE GO AGAIN – A group of investors has plans on the drawing board to build a 40 story megaresort across the Strip from Mandalay Bay. Virgin Atlantic’s Richard Branson is considering throwing his hat into the project, which is having some problems acquiring the remaining few parcels needed to pull off the project. ELVIS – would have turned 66 a few days ago, and AP just did an article on The King’s continuing popularity here in Las Vegas at http://www.journalstar.com/nation?story_id=3033&date=20010108&past=

TAKE THE TRAIN? – A couple of years ago, Amtrak abandoned service to Las Vegas, which (as part of a longer route) only operated three times a week with a 7.5 hour ride between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. However, they have been hard at work to restart daily LA – Vegas service using faster equipment and special stretches of double track allowing the fast passenger trains to pass slower freight service. The money for the new trains and track improvements are available, and the new trains are reported to be plush and have the latest entertainment and amenities.

The delay? The planned 22 mile long passing siding is in the Mojave National Preserve, home to a tortoise that has been listed as a “threatened” species. FEATURE STORY: 01.01.01

The New Year came in with a big bang, literally. A fireworks show called the “Big Bang” simultaneously went off from the roofs of 14 casinos up and down The Strip. Each of the hotels looked like a Roman candle going off with sparks flying everywhere. This was accompanied by loud and constant “concussion bomb” explosions that literally rocked The Strip.

At a time when much of the US was unfortunately freezing, buried in snow, and many without power, New Year’s Eve dawned beautiful and sunny. Temperatures were in the mid-60’s during the day and remained in the mid-40’s leading up to midnight. The crowds were unprecedented, with estimates ranging from 300-350,000, and Metro (Police) reporting by 10 PM that the entire length of the Strip was completely closed to traffic.

There was no shortage of news coverage, both locally and around the world on networks like CNN. We had our brand new Sony Mavica FD-85 digital camera out on The Strip. (My thanks to those readers who recommended it to me a few months ago when I asked for info on a digital that handles low light well.) Despite the throngs of people and general merriment, we managed to get 30 great photos of the fireworks, the crowds, the crazies, the ladies and The Strip on this unique evening. The only sour note? An unnamed hotel executive was quoted lamenting the money spent on a celebration which drew heavily on the 20-something crowd. Generally speaking, casinos prefer to fill the town with a crowd that is a little more established and mature (read: has more disposable income). This is probably one of the same morons who a few years ago questioned the need for hotels to have websites or facilitate booking rooms online. (Las Vegas has always been way behind the online curve, and it didn’t dawn on these guys that parts of the rest of the world are using the internet to find information and buy things 4-5 years ago.)

Note to casino executives: Credit card companies advertise all over college campuses, trying to get their cards into the hands of those with no money. Why? Because someday those students will be making the big bucks, and still using that card. Vegas “ain’t no different.” These 20-somethings had a great time, went home and each told 20 friends how cool Vegas is, and will be back year after year with more and more money to enjoy themselves with. You hit the nail on the head about the kids. I was SHOCKED at how many strollers and mothers holding babies I saw this New Year’s Eve. These people paid a premium for rooms, airfare (or fought traffic heavy traffic flowing in for the weekend), and were exposing their kids to noisy fireworks and 1/3 million tipsy revealers. My advice to parents? Do the family vacation with Walt Disney. Come to Vegas sans the kids for fun and romance.

They want to waste a couple of hours of your valuable time to pitch you on a time-share. When you add up what your time is worth here (airfare, hotel, etc.) you are better off avoiding the hassle. They best way to avoid them is to tell them you are leaving tonight, or split up with your significant other until you get past them (they generally don’t pitch single people).

The signs that have been refurbished and are operating are at the East end of the Fremont St. Experience downtown (by Race Rock, etc.) There is a yard in another part of town where a bunch are stored awaiting restoration (or just collecting dust — nothing rusts in the desert), but to my knowledge it is not open to the public.

FEATURE STORY: American Superstars

american-superstars-01.jpg (29008 bytes) Long time readers know that I enjoy hitting similar shows or restaurants in a short amount of time. I’m still on a diet from visiting three of the best steakhouses in town in three straight weeks (Harrah’s Range, Binion’s Ranch, and Delmonico in The Venetian). Having lived here eight years but never checking out any of the celebrity impersonator shows, I thought it would be fun to see Legends In Concert (reviewed last week) and American Superstars pretty much back-to-back.

American Superstars features tributes to Madonna, Michael Jackson, Charlie Daniels, Elvis Presley and Gloria Estefan (with a “limited engagement” Ricky Martin at time of review). The show is a hybrid: One part celebrity recreation, one part 80’s rock concert, and one part Vegas show.

Elvis hit the stage first, with over-the-top renditions of classics like “Viva Las Vegas,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” and “Jailhouse Rock.” Done with elaborate lighting, sexy female dancers, and a live video shot of the fanfare shown on sidestage screens (hallmarks of every act), he set the stage for an energy level that seldom let up.

Gloria Estefan put on a passable set of the singer’s hits, although getting by more on staging and movements than being a complete look-alike as was the case with most of the performers. However, with any “tribute” show, one must understand you are attending for the music and emotions recreated in a live setting.

american-superstars-02.jpg (19459 bytes) I’m not a traditional country fan, but Charlie Daniels put on a rousing rendition of “Devil Went Down to Georgia” and patriotic favorite “God Bless the USA” as well as displaying some mind-bending fiddle work.

Madonna put on a nice set of hits from across her entire career, and (understandably) had great choreography with the dancers as well as displaying both the 80’s and 90’s Madonna look. Ricky Martin was next. Even though he was getting by more on looks and attire than singing ability, he seemed to be a hit with the ladies. Michael Jackson capped the show with a drop-dead rendition of his greatest hits, a look that could be mistaken for the real thing, and dancing moves that had to be seen to be believed.

American Superstars features Darren Lee as Elvis, Sandy Taggart as Gloria Estefan, Coty Alexander as Madonna, Damian Brantley as Michael Jackson and Johnny Potash as Charlie Daniels and also had an energetic 4 piece live band. One nice feature is that all of the performers as well as the dancers (in full Vegas showgirl costume) appeared in the lobby after the show to meet and greet and pose for photos with attendees.

Tickets for American Superstars at The Stratosphere are $26.95 plus tax for adults and $21.95 plus tax for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 21 must be accompanied with an adult, but with the exception of bare buns on the dancers during a couple of numbers, there is nothing remotely adult in the content.

Note: This is a repeat of the feature story from June 24, 1999. At the time, we only had a fraction of the readership now, and the question of whether to bring kids to Vegas continues to be a hot topic. In addition, last weekend I had the misfortune to see young children out on the Strip and downtown well past what anyone would consider to be a reasonable bedtime.

FEATURE STORY: Kids In Las Vegas

Bringing children to Las Vegas has long been an intense debate among both Las Vegas tourists and tourism professionals. In the early 90’s, casinos thought it would be a great idea to build theme parks and try to turn the town’s image from “sin city” to “family friendly.” Then they realized that they GOOFED. Mirage Resorts started instituting “no stroller” policies, and hotels like the Riviera and Tropicana started advertising slogans like “Rollers, Not Strollers.” The word got around that catering to families is stupid because they use the cheap rooms, eat the cheap food, and are too busy with the kids to gamble.

While we aren’t concerned about the casino’s bottom line (our income is derived from booking rooms and rental cars), every trip to the Strip or downtown — made often in this line of work — we see tourtured-looking parents with the mommy pushing the stroller and the daddy dragging along the 5 year old, neither of whom should have been subjected to miles of walking through this adult playground.

I’ve seen happier faces on gamblers who just lost 5 straight $100 hands at blackjack than on these parents faces, who undoubtedly have to be envious of all child-free tourist couples whom look like they are having the romantic vacation of a lifetime. And these kids that young won’t remember their first visit to Las Vegas.

If your children are old enough that you feel comfortable letting them run around an amusement park, checking in every few hours, then they will find plenty to do here. Just give them the cell phone, you keep that SkyTell pager, and have a great time. And if they are old enough to perhaps remember a supervised vacation and you can resist the temptation of parking them in the hallway or stuffing in the room while you take just one more pull or play just one more hand (let’s face it, winning seems to always happen when you don’t have the time to keep playing), then you might do fine.

But you will be happiest leaving them with the grandparents for the weekend and really enjoying your stay.

Next week, we return back to regular reviews, but the amount of very young children baking in the summer heat and the unhappy parents pushing them around that we have seen the past couple of weeks made us feel compelled to comment.

We share your feeling about the cost of cabs — I prefer to rent a car also. Let me clear up one point: Only the Strip itself is closed, and that closure doesn’t start until about 8-9 PM and it is open again by 3 AM. I usually don’t arrive down at the Strip for New Year’s Eve until 8 PM, and use back roads to get to parking garages like Paris or MGM (although that is pushing it). That’s a great point to remind people. Always ask security before filming in a casino. You might get away with a quick shot of your partner at a slot machine, but many casinos continue to frown on photography to protect the privacy of their clients.

FEATURE STORY: Fielding West, Comedy Magic

Fielding West doesn’t have any tigers or lasers. He’s also not charging $100 a ticket! If you are the budget Las Vegas visitor, you can’t go wrong with this downtown evening show. For the price of one $5.95 drink, you get to enjoy a pretty funny blend of comedy and magic.

He doesn’t levitate a car, but he does crush a live bird with his bare hands! (The bird lives.) He doesn’t have a line of dancing girls, but he does have an attractive assistant who ends up in her undies in a “trick gone awry”. He also mixes somewhat close-up magic with a good dose of humor as well as doing a bit of painful looking fire breathing (all with a smile on his face).

The hour-long show still leaves you plenty of time to catch the light shows and other fun of downtown. None of the humor is disgusting, but a little raunchy. Leave the preteens at home. Buy your ticket at the cage, and enter early for best seats. There aren’t many bad seats in that showroom, but they are first come, first served (no maitre d’). Fielding West: Hocus Pocus plays Sun. – Thurs. evenings at 8:00 PM downtown at The Lady Luck.

I’ve heard good things about Legends. I see it in about 3 weeks. “O” is the hardest ticket in town. About the only way to “beat the system” is to book through a ticket agency like BookVegas at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=1 I just did a random check for Nov. 15-17, and they still have balcony seats available. Bottom line: use an online service and book entirely as far ahead as possible for “O.”

SPAS AND SALONS – Thanks to all of the readers who weighed in on the various spas and salons they have used while here in Las Vegas. Julia from Frankfurt, Germany wrote about the SPA at Luxor: “It costs around USD $100, but it depends what kind of treatment you are going to choose. Afterwards I went to the Kristina’s Beauty Shop, where I got a manicure and my hair done.” Sam Profio wrote: “I bought my wife a $200 package at Venetian’s spa which is Canyon Ranch (national chain). It included a variety of skin and body treatments and massages, lunch, and general use of the facilities which are considerable. It is a beautiful place with a great reputation nationwide.”

A reader names Lauren wrote: “I have lived here for four years now and the best salon is DIVA. They are located off the strip off Industrial Road but near the Rio. (It sounds like a fun show, but I personally put the over/under on that one at about 13 weeks.) FEATURE STORY: Steve Wynn: Running Scared (book review)

While our newsletter appeals to hard-core Vegas visitors wanting to keep up on the latest, our feedback indicates that a number of you have subscribed in anticipation of your very first trip. You might read each week, going “What is all the fuss over this Steve Wynn guy, and who cares”?

Mr. Wynn is the man many feel responsible for inventing the new, high class Las Vegas. He was the brains and the CEO behind the Golden Nugget downtown, then built The Mirage at a time when Las Vegas was a town of cheap buffets, cheap rooms, smoky casinos with low ceilings — much more “Sin City” than it is today.

He has had his share of ups and downs, the latest being the buyout of Mirage Resorts company he built and his latest venture, the purchase of the Desert Inn. The book doesn’t cover the Bellagio era, nor the recent happenings.

Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith set out to write Running Scared: The life and Treacherous Times of Casino King Steve Wynn in 1994, and two lawsuits have resulted. The interesting thing is that the book in nowhere near as damning as one would think would bother the casino mogul, although it doesn’t paint him as a choirboy.

Alleged are friendships and close business relationships with people who are one step away from the mob and / or have had a history of very serious trouble with the police. His temper is chronicled, as well as purported sexual conquests running into the thousands with women ranging from celebrities to keno runners. It is a keen look at what it’s like to be what many consider (at least had up until recently) “the most powerful man in Nevada.”

The downside is that some there isn’t the in-depth analysis of how he pulled off some of his bigger business deals, but more of a “he knew these people that introduced him to these people who financed him” kind of thing. However, those details were probably kept to a minimum to provide an interesting read, and interesting it is. You get a pretty complete feel for how he grew up, developed his charm and ego, and how he is possibly the greatest salesman ever to step foot inside the state.

For those of you who long for stories on the old mob days, the alleged connections to organized crime figures provides quite a backdrop, dating back to the days of his father who ran bingo halls all over the eastern seaboard. If you love to soak up Las Vegas, especially the flash and dash, and hear about how one man took his “over-the-top” vision and made it a reality in everything he built, you’ll enjoy this. From his revamp of the Golden Nugget to the ostentatious Shadow Creek golf course (which had a membership of 1 — Mr. Wynn himself), it is covered.

If you are familiar with him, this book isn’t going to change your mind. Those that love him see it as a terrible account of the man who made Las Vegas what it is, and those who hate what they feel are his many abuses of power and being “above the law” will find plenty to fuel their fire.

Running Scared; The life and Treacherous Times of Casino King Steve Wynn is 330 pages, hardback and sells for $24 — not cheap, but less than 2 1/2 rolls of quarters (in Las Vegas terms). It’s a riveting read that I had trouble putting down, and I’d suggest it as a great way to get hyped on that next long car ride or plane flight here. Spring and fall are prime times here with the great weather (often pool weather while the rest of the country is burning heating oil). When you add in events and conventions, the demand drives up the price. We strongly suggest adding http://www.accessvegas.com/events.htm to your favorites (AOL / WebTV) or bookmarks so you see which days or weeks have less convention traffic.

The tourism areas of Las Vegas (as well as the city in general) are very safe. Casinos have both uniformed and plainclothes security inside and out. Plus, cameras are aimed at virtually every corner of the property, from the front door (including outside) to the back. The general safety precautions you take on any vacation should suit you well here. The only problem I have ever encountered in any tourist areas are the panhandlers downtown, and I just ignore them and keep walking. There is too much security for them to start yelling at you, or get in your face.

I would suggest not walking more than one block from the Fremont St. Experience downtown. Trust me, there is nothing to see outside the very safe casino areas, and once you get a few blocks from the tourist areas, downtown isn’t the most crime free. I also wouldn’t suggest wandering off down side streets on the Strip more than a block or two. While not a high crime area, there is no reason to take chances. The exceptions are generally Convention Center Drive from Stardust to the convention center, Flamingo Rd west to The Rio or east to The Maxim and Ellis Island, and Tropicana east to San Remo and Motel 6.

I’m not saying that everything else is a high crime area, but it’s always safer to stay in the tourist areas where there are lots of people around when in an unfamiliar city.
