Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas!

Lots of focus on the north end of The Strip this week with the news of the sale of The Frontier, plus our brand new Sahara Photos and Riviera Computer Wallpaper.

Pretty big week of news with (finally) the sale of The Frontier hotel. As many of you have heard, the owners of New York’s Plaza hotel have bought The Frontier (across from Wynn, next to Trump’s towers… yes, a second one is going up). They plan to use the Plaza brand, which is interesting because Las Vegas has had a “Plaza” hotel downtown since the 70’s. According to the Associated Press,

Elad Group intends to build a luxury hotel with about 3,500 rooms, private residences, retail space and a casino bearing The Plaza brand on the New Frontier site, Elad president Miki Naftali said in a statement. Opening for the 34.5-acre site across from the Wynn Las Vegas is targeted for 2011.

Ya, ya, ya… whatever, guys. I’ve run out of fingers and toes trying to county the number of “big time, going to be huge, going to take Vegas by storm” projects out of New York, Los Angeles, Miami and other places that have failed to materialize. Among the most very recent, W Las Vegas resort project canceled and a few months ago, Las Ramblas. (I was laughing at the concept and viability of Las Ramblas from day one).

For the most part, the successful multi-billion dollar multi-use projects going up have been built by one of the established local operators (MGM’s CityCenter, Boyd’s Echelon). Bottom line is that we’ll know these new “Plaza” plans are serious when they pony up to buy the name locally from the downtown hotel. For now, I’m treating this as a lot of hot air.

Tickets, Tickets, and more Tickets – Just a reminder that we have tickets to far more than just Las Vegas shows and concerts and usually at some of the best prices you will find for good and premium seats. Among them, NBA Playoffs, American Idols Live, Jimmy Buffett, and other Top Touring Acts. If you can’t make it to Vegas soon, treat yourself to a concert! Side Note: Sending good luck to Reed Waddle, a friend of a friend and a finalist in the American Idol Songwriters search!

Dunkin’ Donuts Coming To Town – As usual, we were way ahead of the curve on this one. In our April 11 issue, reader Kristen asked why we have none and I suggested:

I do understand how Dunkin’ Donuts is revered in other parts of the country, and with a large contingent of east coast visitors and transplants, I agree it seems strange that we have no locations here. We know a number of hotel management types read our newsletter. Consider your request delivered!

Lo and behold, the news is official: Dunkin’ Donuts to open 62 LV stores in seven years

Enjoy This Issue!

The Fashionistas – Show Review

The Fashionistas

Reviewed May 2007
by Nancy Dickinson

The fashion industry probably didn’t know the raw passion it could spawn through music, story, and dance… but leave it to Vegas to bring forth the goods. Fashionistas, a hot seam ripping show at the Empire Ballroom is based on tales of an innovative fashion fetish company, vivacious women seductresses, and the domineering love triangles some very sexy (and certainly masochistic) characters have managed to sew together. The result stitches a new, dark, seductive face upon the fashion industry that is unafraid of celebrating shape and form in all things. Click to Read The Full Review…

Mandalay Beach Ups the Ante – Mandalay Beach will redefine fun-in-the-sun this June with the addition of Las Vegas’ only climate-controlled poolside gaming venue at Mandalay Bay. Just feet from crystal-clear waves, a new three-story, glass-fronted Beach casino will invite guests to indulge at their leisure.

The first level will offer a casual bar and grill while the second level will feature table games with expansive, open-air views. On the third floor, guests will find the spectacular Villas Soleil, luxury pool villas ranging from 250 to 500 square feet. Click to enjoy Mandalay Bay Las Vegas Photos

Lewis keeps Labor Day telethon in Las Vegas– Jerry Lewis’ annual Labor Day telethon to fight muscular dystrophy, which aired from Las Vegas last year, will return this year. The broadcast, which benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association, will air Sept. 2-3 from the South Point hotel-casino south of the Las Vegas Strip, organizers said Wednesday. Lewis moved the telethon out of its longtime home in Los Angeles last year, saying it had been overshadowed by other productions there. Click to Read Complete Article

Gambling Talk: Is There An Internet Poker Ban?– with Victor H. Royer. First of all, there is NO Internet poker ban, and NO Internet gaming bad. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 does NOT prohibit Internet gaming. It is designed to stop banks from financial transactions directly with Internet gaming sites. This is something that was already done several years ago, when the Credit Card companies decided to pull out for fear of being targeted by the Justice Department, even though the DOJ had NO LAW to fall back on. The Wire Act of 1961 was ruled by the Supreme Court as applicable ONLY to sports. Click to Read Complete Article

Dear Ted:I have been to Vegas several times now and each time is a new experience. Myself and three other girls are going to Vegas in December and would like to attend the NFR at the Thomas Mack Centre. I wondered if you could tell me where is a good location to be seated to view the action of the rodeo without paying an arm and a leg for seats. Never having been at the centre I am unsure as to whether the 200 section is so high up that we wouldn’t be able to distinguish the cowboy from the bull or horse. Any insight you could give me in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I thoroughly enjoy reading your newsletter and look forward to it in my in box. Keep up the good work.

LuAnn McQuillan,
Ontario, Canada

Ted Responds:

I have never been to NFR. Having said that, most people are just happy to get tickets to it!

Your other option is to just come during NFR time. Most of the hotels have it on all their screens, some set up special viewing rooms. Many come for the country atmosphere.

Perhaps we can hear from readers who have been to NFR, where they sat, how they enjoyed it. We do have National Finals Rodeo tickets available. Note: These are resale tickets as the event sells out ever year, year-after-year (IE, you just can’t walk up and buy a ticket).

Hello from Las Vegas! We’ve revamped and expanded our Las Vegas restaurant guide and are pleased to announce the addition of Barbara Brown to our staff. Barbara is a (soon to be) graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts here in Las Vegas and currently working at Bradley Ogden Restaurant in Caesars Palace. Welcome Barbara!

Our friends in Florida and the Gulf States are being pounded now and the past few weeks with hurricanes. If you want to do something nice today, take a few bucks that you were saving for a Vegas slot machine and send it to help the American Red Cross.

Imperial Hawaiian Poolside Luau – You only have a few more weeks to enjoy this fun show at the Imperial Palace. Maybe a visit to Hawaii isn’t in the cards for you this year (come to Vegas instead … where you can experience Paris, New York, Arabia, Monte Carlo, the South Seas, the Roman Empire, Venice and more). And you can still get a taste of the islands at this fun poolside show.

Read the write-up Imperial Palace offers Hawaiian twist to Vegas entertainment from our local paper then click to our Imperial Hawaiian Luau: Las Vegas Shows and Show Tickets to enjoy this show on your visit!

Meet Me In Margaritaville – Jimmy Buffett is making his annual fall tour stop and great news for Parrotheads: He’s playing two separate dates one week apart, and playing on Saturday night each time to make it possible to fly in for this one! You can catch him Oct. 16 or Oct. 23 at the MGM Grand.

THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay – Many have been asking us about this magnificent new addition at Mandalay Bay. A complete separate and self-contained hotel tower, THE Hotel rises 43 stories above the Las Vegas Strip and boasts 1,120 suites with separate living and sleeping areas, hospitable meeting places and swank hotspots for those who appreciate life’s finer things.

Are you going to end up watching it on TV, of are you going to be here in person, live and loud, when all of Las Vegas becomes NASCAR Las Vegas telling your friends to look for your face in the stands!

Don’t wait and buy lousy tickets this winter and then have to stay in Laughlin just to find a room. Click to book a reasonably priced NASCAR Las Vegas Nascar Nextel Cup 2005 Ticket and Hotel Package now online or Call Toll-Free (866) 828-9849 x143 so you can tell your friends that you have Vegas 2005 race locked up.

New PT’s Calendar Girls – Las Vegas PT’s Pubs 2005 Calendar is now on sale, with $1 per calendar benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Check out our PT’s Calendar Girls page featuring photos and streaming video of the girls! While the calendars are only available here in Las Vegas, we are looking at a way to make them available to our readers worldwide who aren’t visiting soon. Stay tuned.

Nevada Needs Nurses and Teachers – We generally encourage people not to move to Southern Nevada. We are out of water, and because of the transient nature of newcomers here (people moving and going broke partying, then moving back home), good jobs are hard to find the first few months because no one wants to hire a newcomer to a good job.

However, there is a real shortage of both teachers and medical professionals. So much that our Governor Guinn and the Southern Nevada Medical Industry Coalition have set up the site http://www.helpnevada.com to encourage and help medical professionals relocate to Las Vegas. Those looking for teaching positions can visit the Clark County School District website.

Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas

By Barbara Brown

Want to experience a bit of Germany and the Bavarian Culture in the City of Lights? Then it’s time to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the first authentic replica of the world’s most famous beer hall. Hofbrauhaus remains Munich’s most famous attraction and now we have it here in Las Vegas, located across from the Hard Rock Hotel on Paradise Road.

It is an exact replica of Hofbrauhaus Munchen complete with “Schwemme” (Beer Hall), Biergarten (Beer Garden), bar, music, food, towers, and turrets, windows, balconies and even the roof tiles are all a recreation of the original structure in Bavaria.

From the moment you walk in the door you experience the charm of the intimate corner bar to your left and a gift shop to your right which has an excellent selection of the very finest Bavarian and German merchandise. We were greeted warmly by a hostess dressed in traditional German garb who promptly seated us in the cozy and relaxing atmosphere of the Schwemme.

The menu is filled with traditional mouth watering cuisine. Menu specialties include Creamy Bavarian Potato Soup, Hofbrauhaus Salad, Wurst Salad, Bratwurst, Knackwurst, Schnitzel, Steak, and Bavarian Fish Filet and of course no menu is complete without dessert Strudels, Cheese Cakes and the famous Black Forest Chocolate Cake. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! The national news has been chasing Michael Jackson all over town. Never a dull moment here.

Got a couple of great feedback emails this week:

Myron Shulman had me laughing with this one (regarding Treasure Island now calling itself TI): I also heard rumors that MGM/Mirage plans to re-do the Mirage motif. All references to the south seas, as well as tigers, will be removed. What will they do with the tigers? They will need to come-up with a new name, too. They probably will call it “MI” as it’s next to “TI”. They can call the area “Mi-Ti“.

Desert Lake Escape

Editor’s Note: We usually cover shows and entertainment, but with our warm Las Vegas fall weather this is a perfect time to enjoy the beautiful desert mountains and Lake Mead.
Guest columnist Jean Strickland’s Las Vegas Day Trips offers easy to follow maps & information on great sightseeing for tourists & great escapes for locals. We present her Desert Lake Escape.

Don’t be a Loser!! No one wants to be a loser in Las Vegas. Let me show you some great places where you’ll always be a winner!

We’ll start by traveling east along Lake Mead Blvd. – – past houses, stores, and apartments until – suddenly – civilization ends! Nothing but bare mountain looms over us! Through the mountain pass, like a door into another room, we’ll go. Now, in the distance of just a few hundred feet, we have left the city behind and entered the open desert! Within this narrow pass is a large stone plaque explaining a geological wonder – “The Great Unconformity.” A sign explains how the mountain in front of us was once hundreds of miles away! Along our journey we’ll discover beauty, tranquility and — the other side of Vegas!

Let’s start at one of my favorite spots, the fascinating desert oasis of Rogers Springs. Mother Nature’s handiwork provides this lovely fresh water spring which bubbles up happily from the base of a small mountain. The spring keeps a little pond alive with clear water and quenches the thirst of desert animals. We watch a father with his two young boys wading in the knee deep pool and chasing after tiny fish with cupped hands. The speeding fish outwit the young visitors who are delighted just to enjoy the chase! Another family indulges in a shady picnic under a cluster of palms.

We’ll cross the little bridge, stroll along a trail, and follow, with our eyes, the path the flowing water takes as it leaves the sparkling pool and wanders it’s way down, down, down to join the cool waters of Lake Mead, visible in the distance. Ah, an authentic oasis, created by Mother Nature to care for her creations. Man often imitates these beautiful spots, but never does them full justice. Aren’t you happy you’re here! Why not come back with someone you love. Treat yourself to a picnic or just wander a path or two. Escape the ringing phones and stresses of the city. Mother Nature is waiting here to make you a winner!

There’s a little fish hatchery along the shore of Lake Mead. Let’s make a short stop. We’ll walk down the stairs and out back to the fish runs and watch the fish dart around in the water. I’m glad we arrived at feeding time! Staff members toss fish food pellets into the water, which churns and bubbles as the hungry fish compete for their share. Doesn’t it look just like a Jacuzzi! The fish are used to stock the lake, maybe we’ll come back for a little fishing trip someday. Ah, Mother Nature provides for us, her creations.

I’m in the mood for a hike, how about you? Let’s follow the marked trail down into the Las Vegas Wash. Our trail begins on flat, hard, dry terrain and seems to disappear off the edge of nowhere. As we get closer, see how it takes us down into the canyon that has been fashioned by the rushing waters of the wash. I love the contrasts of nature! As far as we can see the desert appears parched and barren. But, along the waters edge, trees and plants flourish. Birds and animals hunt and play in their unique, lush home. There are so many hikes to choose from, this is only one!

Let me show you one of the breathtaking lake overlooks. I brought some sandwiches and we’ll have an impromptu picnic! To stand above the waters of the lake and overlook its stark, barren shores is an exhilarating experience! I wish we could see in every direction at the same time! Don’t you feel like your eyes are straining to take in as large a view as humanly possible? I love the brilliant blue of the desert sky, the colors of the land – red, gold, black and tan, the ability to breathe in deeply and know the air is clean!

And at night the view is no less fantastic! All the stars we usually miss, blocked out by the city lights, sparkle above our heads. Look, can you see the big dipper right there? We miss the stars in the city! Wonder if there will be a meteor shower tonight? Ah, Mother Nature made this all for you. See what a winner you are!

Well, the time has come to return to our responsibilities. Did you enjoy our Desert Lake Escape? Why not go back! Do some of the things we missed.
