Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

I’m somewhat on my own this week putting the newsletter out so have mercy! Amy and her family went to Southern California for a well-deserved spring break family vacation. Mark was last seen monitoring beer pong tournaments on The Strip (but sobered up long enough to produce the news section). However, our new writers are really kicking up some dust with brand new show reviews! So…

Extra show reviews this issue, extra Members Mania where readers comment and tell us about their Las Vegas experiences, and extra answers from me. Lets dive right in…

Hooters Hotel Casino Swan Song – Regular readers saw the link to the story about how Hooters Las Vegas may cease to be in the next couple of years. I say “cease to be” because the new owners are pulling that “boutique hotel” thing that has yet to gain significant traction here in Las Vegas.

Many visitors never headed over to check the place out. And… it has only been a couple of years since the property was changed over from the established San Remo to the Hooters brand. If you missed it (or won’t be back to check it out), enjoy our full photo set of Hooters Hotel Casino Las Vegas.

Mirage Volcano Repairs – Wet Design, the company responsible for The Fountains of Bellagio, is leading the design team to revamp the volcano so we are expecting something pretty spectacular. (They owe that much to us after ripping out the tiger display at the entrance to The Mirage). Details and the date of re-opening have yet to be released but we’ll keep you posted!

March Madness is in full swing and The sports books are jammed. Every TV in every resort, restaurant, and bar is tuned to the games from morning until night. Although Las Vegas is a great place to be this time of year, nothing beats seeing these games in person. If your team is on the move or you just want to enjoy this spectacle live and in person, we have NCAA Sweet 16 Basketball Tickets available. Just click the link.

No-Fee ATM’s – A few months ago, I gave some advice on how to get cash from your debit card at various Las Vegas Strip locations without paying any service or ATM fee. (Click to Read AccessVegas.com Insider Vibe Dec. 26, 2007). Numerous readers wrote to tell their appreciation including Mimi from Canada who said “I have been coming to Vegas since 1976 from Canada and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this tip. And believe me, I use my bank card often. Thanks a million!

We also solicited some advice from readers about no-fee ATM’s they had discovered:

  • A hidden gem – in the middle of the strip – is the Wells Fargo ATM located at Carnival Court at Harrah’s. Located between the Starbucks and Ghirardelli Chocolates, it is a standard bank ATM and has no more fees than any other Wells Fargo ATM. And if you’re a Wells Fargo customer, no fees!
  • Bank of America has a regular ATM in the new part of The Forum Shops at Caesars on the second floor next to the patio of Casa Fuente . It is almost hidden back in the corner. This is a regular B of A machine (no fees if you are a B of A customer).

We know very few non-fee ATM’s exist on The Strip. If you run into one (or have any other feedback on Las Vegas or our newsletter), you can always drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com

Take A Journey Into Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular

By Erin Guernsey

Your journey into the world of Phantom — The Las Vegas Spectacular (Phantom Of The Opera) begins as you make your way into the impressive Phantom Theatre, which has been modeled after the Opera Garnier in Paris. Once inside you are met by a chandelier hanging in pieces just above the seats and gray curtains covering the walls. This dilapidated look does not last for long. Shortly after the opening of the show you are transported back in time to see the magnificent opera house in all of its former glory.

Phantom û The Las Vegas Spectacular at The Venetian beautifully unfolds the story of Christine Daae and The Phantom of the Opera. During this classic tale of love and heartbreak the audience watches as Christine struggles to move past the loss of her father while becoming entranced by The Phantom, whom she calls “the angel of music.” The Phantom begins terrorizing members of the cast and crew when he realizes that Christine has fallen in love with another man. His revenge is taken in the form of murder and a shattered chandelier.

Rita Rudner Comedy at Harrah’s Las Vegas

by Mara M. Mannella

Tucked inside a casino whose name is synonymous with glitz and glamour is a comedian who has paid her dues here in Las Vegas and her experience shows. Rita Rudner represents classic Vegas in a way that is both entertaining and unpretentious. An intimate theater is the setting for Ms. Rudner’s one woman show that keeps audiences laughing every night.

A woman comedian in a sea of male headliners is an eye-catching marquee on the Strip, where Rita Rudner makes her home at Harrah’s. The audience is welcomed to share in Rita’s life experiences, from the trials and tribulations of married life to the harrowing but hysterical journey of getting older. The unique delivery of Rita’s humor makes it so the audience isn’t sure what the next zinger will be. Poking fun at herself, her husband, and select audience members, you never know who the next victim will be.

Wayne Brady: Making %@It Up!

By Devon Brooke Clasen

A true Vegas variety show incorporating singing, dancing, acting, comedy and even that most perplexing of art forms: mime, Wayne Brady’s Making %@It Up takes the theatrical task to the next level, with fully improvised performance vignettes interspersed among prepared musical tribute performances.

Dialing the pressure up even higher, show business virtuoso Wayne Brady has to not only make everything up on the spot, but also make it consistently funny. Fortunately, Brady delivers with heavy doses of witty, sharp, topical humor, keeping even a Monday night audience in complete hysterics.

Housed in an intimate theatre, there really isn’t a bad seat in the venue, unless stage-shy attendees are seated just off the stage. This “danger zone” provides Brady, as well as his improv partner Jonathan Mangum, a proficient performer in his own right, the pick of the litter when summoning audience members to the stage to take part in an act.

Banned for Decades, Forbidden Cocktail Now Available at Luxor – Nicknamed the “Green Fairy” for its occasionally milky green color and mythical hallucinogenic effects, absinthe is legal in the U.S. after a 95-year ban. Patrons of Luxor’s new center bar, Liquidity, now can experience the once-forbidden liqueur for themselves. Available for $300, “Absinthe Envy” is served in an elaborate tableside presentation that offers a modern take on the tradition of serving the illicit concoction with a sugar cube and chilled water.

Celebrity Colorist Kim Vo Lists Hot New Trends for Summer and Beyond – Make your summer sizzle with a hot new ‘do.’ According to celebrity colorist Kim Vo of his eponymous salon at The Mirage, the “it” look for hair is full, shiny and cascading, perfectly highlighted from root to tip. Extensions are a hot new way to create this total concept. Vo says strategically placed extensions can add volume and create effortless, multi-dimensional highlights and lowlights while protecting natural hair. For the “it” cut, Vo says to look no further than Academy Award-winning actress Hillary Swank’s sweeping, layered bob.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Hi Ted,

I’m going to be coming out to Las Vegas in April for a bachelorette party. I will be arriving one night earlier than the other women, and I would like some suggestions on solo-dining-friendly locations.

I don’t want to feel the need to order room service, or go to a buffet, simply because I am by myself. Thank you for your help!

Amy R.

Ted Responds:

Fortunately, solo dining for both men and women in Las Vegas is more common than in other places. More and more visit for business, conventions, just-passing-through, and your situation where someone is in town longer than their group.

Don’t discount one of the nicer buffets like the ones at Planet Hollywood, Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas or Cravings at The Mirage. While not cheap, all of these have an amazing variety of top-notch food and it can be more fun to sample and enjoy when alone. If you want low-key and less expensive, you’ll be quite comfortable dining solo in any hotel coffee shop. This can also be a great time to try one of the celeb chef restaurants without the pressure of how to split the check!

I’d avoid a theme restaurant or a place that will have more of a party atmosphere as they tend to draw groups having fun and you may feel slightly self-conscious or alone. If you feel slightly self-conscious asking for a table for one, just tell the hostess “It’s just me this evening… my friends are flying in later.” If comfortable with it, most restaurants serve their full menu at the bar, no reservation necessary.

Bottom Line: Go eat and have fun. This is your one chance to do what you want without it having to be a group decision!

Ted:Many thanks for your news letter! We had a great time over Christmas, but the weather was COLD! Will not come in winter again, since we’re from Maine. Also many shows were dark for various reasons. We decided to visit Laughlin and some friends there. GREAT!

We stayed at Ballys in Vegas GREAT! but returned for 2 nights more and stayed in an off strip casino/hotel and checked out early because we HATED it there! We thought it would be o.k. because they have renovated, but we got an old room and UGH! The Bellagio Gardens were beautiful!!

Keep up good works on news.

chocolatecat11

Ted Responds:

Every fall, I do try to remind everyone that we are not a balmy winter destination (yes sunny, but not warm) as I did in our November 30, 2007 issue. Winter average is 57 F but our highs can be 15 degrees on either side of the average at any given time. Our desert has a mind of its own!

Because mid-December is the lightest visitor volume of the year, many of the shows take a week or two off and give everybody a well-deserved rest. Most shows perform 6 nights a week just about all year long. The upside of mid-December is some of the cheapest room prices of the year. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Just wanted to thank you for your informative newsletter. It really helps keep me up to date on what’s happening in my FAVORITE city! I also appreciate your reliability in sending it out on a regular basis. Keep up the GREAT work!

Sincerely,

Kerry Espenschied

We will be coming to Las Vegas Oct. 31 for the Professional Bull Riding Finals at the Thomas & Mack Center. There are several off-strip motels within walking distance and I was wondering if the area is safe to walk in at night. Thanks!

Debbie

Ted Responds:

I assume you are talking about the various hotels in the Harmon/Paradise (and Swenson) area. That area isn’t a problem area. Plus, there will be plenty of other PBR fans most likely walking to and from the T and M around the same time.

You may want to use Google or Yahoo maps to track the actual distance from the hotel of your choice to the T and M arena and measure the comfort of the distance you want to walk.

I was in Vegas a couple of years ago and am coming back in late March an we were at a casino, went to a food court and shopping stores and it started raining in the court! What is the Hotel/Casino was that? I can’t remember right off the top of my head! We love your news letter and podcast! Keep up the wonderful work!Keith

Ted Responds:

That was the Aladdin when you visited, now Planet Hollywood in the Miracle Mile shops behind the casino. They make it “rain” in an area of the mall every hour (more often on weekends). Check for the times when you get there.

The podcast would have been back earlier this week, but I got hit with a head/chest cold including a mild fever. 78 degrees everyday recently and I have a cold! All the equipment is dusted off and ready to go. Stack of topics in a big pile. As soon as this thing clears, I’m finally “back on the air.” Thanks for the interest!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Spring Break and March Madness are pretty much in the rear-view mirror with our typical unpredictable spring weather. Clouds and 60’s (F) last week, sun and 80’s this week with some wind. However, the cold is gone for good and pool weather looks here to stay until mid-October!

Bill’s Hotel and Gambling Saloon – sounds like the name of some small joint in Reno. But in reality, it is the new name of the Barbary Coast on The Strip. The disdain for this new name is pretty much universal, especially since the hotel actually has a great location and nice rooms and it now sounds like a third-rate joint.

They couldn’t keep the previous name because they bought it from the group that owns the other Coast Casinos around town. But how about just calling it the Barbary, or Barbary Point, or the New Barbary? It is too late now… the expense of swapping out all the chips and signs and everything else would make them think twice. But thumbs down to whoever decided on Bill’s.

Construction Updates – In the next few weeks, we’ll have a few features on all the new construction on The Las Vegas Strip. Las Vegas is always changing… always something new even for regular visitors.

Gambling Talk: Poker Theory vs. Reality — Part Two – with Victor H. Royer. Assuming that we accept the three items outlined in the last issue, Part One of this two-part article, what exactly is it that we find? Is it the reality that we will receive pocket Aces exactly each 220 deals like clockwork? Well, of course not. Nevertheless, the theory indicates that that should be the case. The same applies to the winning percentage when beginning with pocket Aces being about 1/3rd of the time. Does that mean that it will always happen like that each and every time? Well, of course not. Reader Submitted Photo – Paul Maskew submitted this great photo of Bellagio Las Vegas taken from The Aladdin across the street:

Hi Ted,

Thought you might like this photo I took from my room at The Aladdin in August 2005. This was my last visit with my wife and we’re missing the place already!

This was our 4th visit since my wife and I were married at The little Church of The West in October 2001 and we can’t get enough of the place. Hopefully back next year.

Incidentally, the room at the Aladdin was a complimentary upgrade since my wife complained about the “tired” looking bedding!! It has to be the best view ever.

Hi Ted:I am a Vegas-aholic. In the last three years I’ve been to Vegas 5 times, staying at the Riviera, Excalibur, NYNY, Stratosphere and Flamingo. I will grace your city in August, I’ll be staying at the Stardust. I visit your website frequently.

I am worried about my beloved Las Vegas. Every time I come down I see more and more condominium developments going up on the strip!! The strip is busy enough with tourists, we don’t need thousands of people LIVING there. As middle-class hotels like the Stardust are torn down, up goes a multi-million dollar condominium complex. So in 10 years what will become of the LV strip? A haven for millionaires only? After all, who will be able to afford these condos except for millionaires? Is that what the goal of the city planners is? Do they no longer want to attract the middle class?

If you have any information on what the goals of the city planners are, I’d really like to hear from you. Thanks

Marty

Toronto ON

Ted Responds:

The condos in question are (for the most part) glorified hotel room or suite. Basically not much more than a hotel room with a full kitchen, perhaps a separate bedroom. Very few people are likely to make them a full time residence. For the price of one of these condo units right on The Strip, you can buy a really nice, big condo or home within 10-15 minutes of The Strip much more suitable for a full time local.

Most of these condo units will be used as a regular place to stay when the owner is here, and rented out to visitors the rest of the year. This will actually in effect create more visitor rooms in Las Vegas, helping keep the price of rooms down in general (more supply of anything tends to drive down prices).

The city planners have no say or “goal” in attempting to influence what kind visitor that comes to Las Vegas. It is 100% driven by the free market. If the demand for condos on The Strip exists, developers build them. As we’ve seen from some of the failed projects, the demand wasn’t quite as high as some thought.

Hi Ted,We enjoy visiting Vegas during quiet times(a relative term). Of these three dates, which one would best meet that criteria and be less crowded? June 3-8 June 10-15 July 8-13?.

The very hot weather is not a concern, nor is the possible lack of Headliners at that time. We stay Downtown, so conventions being held should not be a problem, although we do have to arrive and leave from the airport.

Sue & Sam

Ted Responds:

Rule of thumb, the hotter the weather, the less people in town and lower the rates. However, Las Vegas really doesn’t have any “off” times like it used to. And except for December, the flow of concerts and entertainers is pretty constant.

Here is some really good and easy rules of thumb to book the less crowded times:

1. Room rates are subject to demand. If flexible, picking the dates where the rates are lower will generally be less crowded (if you can ever call Las Vegas “less crowded” anymore).

2. The second thing you may then wish to do is check out our Concert Calendar for your dates at www.accessvegas.com/entertainment

You may see that a concert or headliner you really want so catch is coming during one of the times you are looking at visiting, and this may be worth paying a few more bucks for the room where you are here. There is nothing like seeing a concert here. No worries about going to work the next day, fun, relaxed… totally different vibe!

Side Note: We post concerts as soon as we have ticket availability, but keep in mind that many events don’t go on sale until 2-3 months before the event.

Hope this helps!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Wow, wow, wow… what a past 10 days here in Las Vegas. NASCAR blazed into town with record crowds (unlike the NBA All-Star game, NASCAR produced no shootings or significant arrests) followed by The Stardust going BOOM! The entire week saw highs brushing 90 F and March Madness combined with St. Patrick’s Day and Spring Break to make it one of the most crazy weekends of the year.

Add in the locals celebrating UNLV making the NCAA Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 (who needs the NBA), two more weeks of basketball March Madness, pool weather kicking in and Las Vegas is the only place to be! (Did it snow somewhere last weekend? We don’t shovel snow here).

Maverick Helicopter Tours In The News – Our friends at Maverick Helicopter Tours were recently featured in the local news article Why crawl when you can fly? about all the celebrities, high rollers, and even race drivers that they take care of on NASCAR race days. However, you don’t have to be a celeb or high roller to enjoy their memorable, top-quality tours from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon (including some that actually land in the bottom of the Canyon)! They also have amazing, beautiful night flights over the Las Vegas Strip.

Cirque du Soleil and Luxor executives are announcing details of a new production set to open at Luxor Las Vegas in 2008. I’m taking a wild guess that it involves magic and Chris Angel, but every once in a while, Las Vegas throws a curve. We’ll have details next issue!

Don’t Get Lost In Vegas – So many people tell me that they do rent a car when they come to town so they can travel at their own whim (valet parking is free at all Las Vegas hotels, and cab fares add up). They also tell me they would like to venture off The Strip a bit, perhaps check out some of the “local’s casinos” they keep hearing about, but are not real fond of driving in an unfamiliar city. If you rent from Enterprise, they are offering our readers 50% OFF GPS Navigation unit rentals at airport locations at Enterprise.com (Valid until May 31, 2007)

Gambling Talk: Poker Theory vs. Reality — Part One – with Victor H. Royer. In order to become good at any kind of game, poker included, it is not only necessary to learn the required rules of the game itself, but it helps if you also learn the game theory behind your game of choice, or perhaps the general game theory as that may apply to such relevant game concepts. Game theory itself is a universal concept that spans and transcends the human animal’s instinctive and innate propensity to engage in such activities, which we as sentient human beings tend to describe as “playing”, or “games”. Dear Ted,Visit 15 now over and back in NE England and reality. Still I returned with a gambling profit of $24 so I’m pleased. Saw some shows again and highlight was The Scintas @ The Sahara. Ultra-talented family + one group with truly excellent comedy and impressions and Chrissi Scinta has got one of the nicest singing voices in the USA. Joey and Frankie Scinta are two of the funniest around and Pete O’Donnell compliments with classy percussion.I recommend anyone who may be feeling down to see this show because the Scintas will lift you up as it did me. Next time in LV may be 2008 but The Scintas are my no.1.

On a down side – too many condos getting built on and around the Strip, before long there’ll be no room for new casino/hotels.

Keep up the good work Ted!

All the best from Owen (NE England)

Ted Responds:

I first enjoyed The Scintas when the started here at The Hilton, and have been thrilled to see them moving on to big crowds at The Rio and finally their long dreamed spot on The Strip at The Sahara. This is old school fun and variety done modern Vegas and I’ve never talked to anyone who attended that was disappointed. Here’s some Scintas info for everyone to enjoy for themselves:

Hi,I am retiring from my job after 20 yrs May 31st and my husband is bringing me to Las Vegas for our anniversary June 7th. I want so much to go see ‘O’, where can I find the cheapest tickets without being in the nosebleed section? Any help will be greatly appreciated.Mrs. Adams

Ted Responds:

Congratulations on your retirement! Unfortunately, there are no “cheapest tickets” as Cirque du Soleil’s O is one of the most in-demand shows in Las Vegas.

For any shows that someone really wants to see, we suggest purchasing tickets as far in advance as possible. Do keep in mind that some shows don’t release tickets more than 3-6 months in advance.

Also, given that the “good seats” are first come, first served (the farther ahead you book, the better your seats will be), anyone desiring the best seats possible for a show should book in advance. Even if some tickets for a show are still available the day of the show, you’ll much more likely to be in the last (worst) seats by booking last minute.

If you have further questions or want help deciding, please call our reservations agents at 800-696-5721.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! March Madness and St. Patrick’s Day collide over the weekend in just one week (from publication date). The 10 day forecast is showing temps in the low 80’s (F) for March 16 – 18, 2007. Rooms are going quickly, so don’t delay. Check out our friends at Las Vegas Hotel Deals for the best deals still available!

Spamalot Opens Big – The amazingly successful Monty Python show based on the screenplay of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is opening preview performances as we go to press, with the official show opening at the end of the month. John O’Hurley, (J. Peterman on “Seinfeld.” , “Dancing with the Stars” season one champion, “Family Feud” host) leads the cast which includes Nikki Crawford as The Lady of the Lake. We’ll have reports and reviews as things progress, but tickets are available now: Monty Python’s Spamalot Tickets

Stardust To Go Boom – Local TV station KLAS reported just a couple of days ago that the Stardust implosion will be in the early morning of Tuesday March 13. Earlier, the rumored date had been March 12. (Interestingly enough, KLAS pulled the story off their site, but we have the cached link).

Although historically a big deal and advance notice was made of implosions, the crowd and traffic control would get overwhelming. Now, implosions are usually announced only a few hours in advance. If you are going to be in town this coming week, keep your ear to the ground, maybe catch the evening local news both days, and cross your fingers that you get to see it!

Limos Are Hot and I mean red hot. I was sifting through some of the reservations we’ve taken just today, and you would be surprised at how many are flying on on Southwest or Allegiant or similar discount airline, then kicking off your vacation with a limo ride from the airport to your hotel.

An airline seat is an airline seat, but nothing rocks your vacation from the very first minute like being whisked away in a limo, and the grand entrance you make at the hotel is priceless! The cost? Not much more than a cab. Seriously. Click to check our our limo rates and see for yourself!

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 6 — Luck and Volatility – with Victor H. Royer. The third and final of those points that required a great deal of adjustment for real world poker players making the transition to the Internet tournaments, was the simple fact of the enormously atrocious play that you will find being committed by so many players, and in fact the vast majority of them entering all such tournaments. This is especially so for the small buy-in tournaments, because many are populated by absolute novices and complete amateurs. There is nothing wrong with that, because it is precisely this opportunity that allows many players to begin in this way, and then learn as they go along and progress to a point where they get better. I am getting the impression that Las Vegas is becoming a vacation destination for the rich and famous, and that the average family would not be happy or rather they would be disappointed in a trip there. I thought Vegas was always affordable, but anymore I am thinking Disney is just as cheap. Any comments on the matter would be appreciated.

Thank You

“DRBLUIZE”

Ted Responds:

Attention Readers,

I’m going to let you take over this question! Some people find Las Vegas too expensive, and some still find it reasonable compared to other destinations. Some may enjoy bringing their families here while others feel Las Vegas should be 21 and over.

I’ve posted the original question in our message boards here:
Las Vegas: Family Friendly, or For Rich?

Our message boards are once again operating at full speed, so now is a great time to get in and post your thoughts and answers on what you feel is happening to Las Vegas, and if it is a good family vacation!

Hi,

On a recent TV show- the “Hungry Detective” off the strip restaurants such as Ellis island (behind super 8) were featured. He mentioned a discount coupon book that is available at some locations for the asking. We are traveling on a limited budget & would appreciate any coupons/ tips that you can share. Looking forward to visiting in 3 weeks!!!!

Thanks!

Debbie

Ted Responds:

First I’m going to tell you where to get discount books and stuff, then I’m going to tell you pretty much not to use them, then I’ll tell you about the steak special (which doesn’t need a coupon).

  1. In your room will be one or more free magazines that will have quite a few coupons in it. Also, if you hunt down the “players club booth” in most hotels, they will often have one for the taking.á

  2. By all means use the coupons for things you already were thinking about doing, of that you feel would be very interesting to you. However, don’t get caught in what I call the “coupon trap:”Your time here is very valuable. When you take what you are spending to get here plus the price of a room and food and divide that into the 16 hours a day you won’t be in your room, you are going to find out that you might be spending $10.00 or more per hour just go actually be here.

The Strip is over four miles long, traffic often makes it slow going even if you take the bus (let alone a cab) and you need to think twice about whether it is worth spending valuable time (and money unless you are walking) just getting somewhere to save a few bucks on something that only marginally interest you.

I’ve never talked to anyone who was unhappy that they splurged on something they really wanted to check out here. But I’ve talked to plenty of said “We had a coupon and it was a hassle to get there and it wasn’t that good…”. You get the picture.

    á

  3. Ellis Island has a complete steak dinner for $4.95. It is good. It is off the menu, so you need to ask for it. There is often a 25-45 minute wait at the coffee shop to get in to enjoy it so you have plenty of time to lose money in their casino before you sit down to eat. Still, it is close enough to The Strip to enjoy if you are staying near center strip. Here’s a Google Map to Ellis Island Casino.

Hello From Las Vegas! Our thanks to reader Mike Jauken who found the source of the “hit you three ways” quote in our last issue. It was part of a routine by Christian comedian Mike Warnke during the 70’s.

Correction On PokerIn our last issue we posted a note from Rita Hawn of Ultimate Poker Challenge about how you can all go down and watch the show film downtown, and even have a chance to sign up and play. The good news? We printed the URL just as they sent it. The bad news? Then sent a wrong web address. The correct one is http://www.ultimatepokerchallenge.com

Insider Tourist Traffic Tips – Our local “Road Warrior” traffic columnist Omar Sofradzija wrote an article called Survival tips for NBA fans a couple of weeks ago. Celine Dion – A New Day

Celine Dion - A New Dayby Amy Rayner-Cooley

Celine Dion in “A New Day…” is, in one word amazing! After only one song, I was not only completely enthralled, but I could see why “A New Day…” is one of the hottest tickets in town.

Featuring many of Celine’s most recognizable songs including, “The Power of Love”, “Because You Loved Me”, “I Drove All Night” and “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”, no one will walk away from this masterpiece disappointed. Celine’s powerful voice is even more beautiful in person than I could have imagined and completely explains why this show sells out weeks in advance. Click to Read The Full Review…

Two Cases Of Mistaken Elvis Identity ‘Legends’ Impersonator On Two Mag Covers, Each Wrong Name – In a town with nearly as many Elvises as there are buffets, those who impersonate the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll with style, grace and real talent stand far and above the rest of the sideburned wannabes in jumpsuits. At the top is Matt Lewis, featured performer of Legends in Concert (Show Ticket Link), the celebrity tribute spectacular now in its 24th year at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. Lewis first impersonated Elvis for a school talent show when he was 12 years old. Now, six nights every week, two shows per night for the past four years, Lewis leaves the ladies swooning in the aisles with his charm, boyish good looks, commanding voice and dead-ringer compelling impersonation of the truck driver from Tupelo. Real world poker players, especially those used to land-based poker tournaments, tend to be comfortable in sitting around for many hours without actually playing any hands, because they understand that the real world poker tournaments are marathons that usually take many hours, and often many days to complete. As a result, they pace themselves differently compared to the world of the Internet poker tournament. Therefore, when they now find themselves sitting in front of their computer and playing on Internet poker tournament, they tend to be overwhelmed by the very nature of the game, and its accompanying speed. Hi Ted,I was wondering if you could email the newsletter to my home email as well as my office? My home email address is (redacted for privacy).

Great newsletters by the way. My fiance and I love Las Vegas and would love to live there, not just for the strip, but for everything including it’s proximity to other attractions. We’ve been twice in the last two years and getting regular newsletters makes be feel better about not being there.

Thanks again.

Linda Clifton

Ted Responds:

Linda, Not a problem! Everyone is welcome to subscribe both with a home and work (or secondary) address so they get enjoy reading wherever they are. Anyone wishing to subscribe a first (or second) email address can use the form on our main newsletter page.

Most people who live here generally don’t go near The Strip (unless they work there or for a special night out). Las Vegas is a very different place being in the desert and with the mix of new residents from all over the world. People who move here with the attitude of enjoying the entire area as a place to live enjoy living here the most!

Hi Ted,Love the newsletter. Have a question for you. I like to rent a vehicle while we stay in Las Vegas. I’ve heard a lot of rumors about the new central rental car facility but haven’t been able to pinpoint when it opens and exactly where it’s going to be. Do you have any updates?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Rich

Ted Responds:

Rick, I drive by it a couple times a month. It is at 7200 Gilespie Street, Las Vegas, 89123 (Google Map Link). It is on the left side of the street. I don’t have a definitive date, but it is getting close. Certainly will be sometime this year.

Special personal tip when using it:

From the looks of the traffic set-up already in place, it looks like they will encourage people to head south out of the facility, and use Warm Springs over to Las Vegas Blvd. Screw that. Turn north out of the rental car facility, and take Gilespie north up to Sunset. Left (west) on Sunset to Las Vegas Blvd. You’ll miss a lot of traffic and the intersection of Las Vegas Blvd. and I-215 (our beltway).

Or for you who enjoy using Paradise to avoid Strip traffic, north on Gilespie, turn right (east) on George Crocket Rd which will directly put you into the airport tunnel onto Paradise. Just for fun, don’t miss glancing at the Harrah’s World Headquarters at George Crocket and Bermuda if you take that route. Hope it helps and makes it more fun to look forward to your next trip!

Rich Little: One’s A Crowd playing April 13th – 15th, 2006, at The Orleans Showroom. Show Time: 8 PM. Tickets start at $39.95, call 702-365-7075 to purchase.

Reviewed August, 2005
by Nancy Hruska

“George Burns” started off the show at The Orleans Showroom recently, cracking a joke about the well-known impressionist Rich Little. “When I die, they’ll have to bury Rich instead.”

A native Canadian, Rich Little has been getting under the skin of and “becoming” celebrities and political figures alike for the last 40 years. Some of his impersonated victims include heavy weight celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone, Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzeneger, and Clint Eastwood. But a lot of his voice and mannerism material comes from Baby Boomer friendly figures such as Dr. Ruth, the infamous Frank Sinatra, and even Kermit the Frog to name only a few of his 200 voice collection. Oh, and every U.S. President since Kennedy were certainly not spared by the “Master of Mimic.” Click To Read The Entire Review …

Gambling Talk: The Mathematics Of Poker and Gambling – with Victor H. Royer. There are quite a few people in the gaming business, particularly writers and gaming experts, who are often prone to overusing mathematical percentages, frequencies of occurrence, probabilities and so. Basically, overusing the importance of mathematics in gambling. Even I have been, on occasion, guilty of doing so. It is easy to understand why. Click to Read Complete Article

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Master Magician Lance Burton

lance burton master magician magic You have probably seen Lance Burton on T.V. countless times. He’s been a semi-fixture on The Tonight Show, dating back to Johnny Carson who called Lance “the best magician I have ever seen.” More recently on everything from Hollywood Squares (where he is now a semi-regular guest) to programs on Animal Planet network.

Lance graduated from an ongoing guest spot in Folies Bergere to his own to his own show in the Lance Burton Theater at the Monte Carlo a few years ago, and continues a very succesful run.

The show started with the clip from his last television special in which he was chained to the tracks of the infamous Desperado rollercoaster in Primm (40 miles south of Las Vegas). It is arguably the tallest and fastest in the world. While he was able to work his way free, he couldn’t hear his assistant’s time counts and was nearly killed. Even in slow motion, you could see the coaster missing his feet by inches as he jumped free.

Lance it a traditional magician, not relying on lasers and tigers so much as classic magic taken to a new level. He does make himself flatten and vanish in a twist on the old rabbit from a hat routine that fills the stage with machinery (and his beautiful assistants). In an aviation themed illusion, his showgirl assistants manage to appear/dissapear into a suitcase placed on a table in the middle of the stage. Nothing above, below, behind … and no way they could all fit. Wow.

Featured Review: Coyote Ugly

Coyote Ugly is a southern style bar and dance saloon featuring hot female bartenders who have elevated pouring drinks to an art form. Like its New York City namesake, each night, sexy, sassy, tough talking Coyote Ugly bartenders ascend atop the bar to perform a bold show filled with stunts ranging from fire-blowing to body shots, clogging and choreographed dance numbers, all while inviting customer interaction.Coyote Ugly boasts some of the wildest bartenders and sexiest barkeep this side of the Mississippi. The “Coyotes” were selected in an arduous competition of 150 finalists for the coveted bartender positions. Most of the “Coyotes” had professional dancing experience before joining Coyote Ugly with experience ranging from Las Vegas production shows to cheerleading for professional sports teams. There is even a former Rockette on the payroll.

Coyote Ugly’s southern Americana decor invites its guests to check their inhibitions at the door, kick back and relax. Dark, trendy martini bars with VIP couches and private corners have filled the Las Vegas landscape, the aim of Coyote Ugly’s design is to knock that trend down a notch in an atmosphere that makes the guests part of one big party.

Like the New York City original, Coyote Ugly Las Vegas is designed to look like a southern bar that has endured years of partying, entrenched with southern flea market treasures and dark worn wood. There is ample room for dancing on the bar, where even the most reserved guests are invited to showcase their talents and leave their undergarments behind for the “Bra Wall of Fame.”

Area 51 – Top Secret (SUV) – This tour takes us to an incredibly remote part of the Nevada desert. It is awesome just to realize how much trouble the government went to, to stay away from the prying eyes of the public. This tour starts with a stop in a vast gorge where UFO sightings have occurred directly over the highway. Our second stop is at the rim of a beautiful canyon where more sightings have taken place. This is an unmarked road that goes to one place only, the Top secret location of Area 51.

EDITORS NOTE: I just checked, and we now have readers in over 50 countries around the world! Some of those readers are Rick Springfield fans, and were very upset about my review last week. We’ll feature their comments in the Feedback section.Good News! We’ve been able to bring back the $25 rebate for booking rooms online — details at the bottom of the news section. The weather is going to be pushing into the mid-80’s Sun. – Wed. of this coming week. If you live in a cold weather climate, might be a good time to sneak in a quick Vegas trip!LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:MARCH MADNESS – is here, and combined with Spring Break the town is hopping with excitement! If you want a little “behind the scenes” look at what goes into coming up with the sports book numbers for all of the tournament games, the story is at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-12-Mon-2001/news/15623678.html

ALWAYS PLAY LOADED – No, not drunk. That option is up to you. But you don’t want to be like the Utah man who lined up all of the Megabucks symbols a few days ago with only two coins in the machine when the maximum bet is three coins per pull. Instead of winning the $8 million jackpot, he walked away with $10,000. Not a bad chunk of change, but every day for the rest of his life he has to wake up knowing he could have been a millionaire. With rare exception, standard slot and video poker machines pay much more when you hit the top jackpot with full coins in. If you can’t afford to play a machine “loaded,” move down to a lower denomination machine.

MEGABUCKS HITS! – This JUST came in before I got ready to send this. A New Hampshire man who was playing with three coins in hit the $8 million jackpot at The Orleans earlier today.

NO STORM YET – Last week, we reported the debut of this new show was set for March 22. The debut has been delayed, with no new date set.

BABY’S – Night Club at the Hard Rock hotel is growing in fame for their celebrity visitors as well as hosting events like Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s recent birthday party. They are allowing us to offer you E-vite Tickets for upcoming events at Baby’s. They will send you an E-vite ticket via E-mail that will be PRINTED OUT BY YOU and have your Name, Date of attendance, and amount of guests (+3 max.) which will be checked at the door.

Requests MUST come from attendee. E-vites are good for free admission and Line pass on Thursday’s and $5 off admission and line pass for Fridays and Saturdays. These Tickets are only good for the date on the ticket. Reply to (click) mailto:babysnightclub@lvcm.com and send your *Name, *Date you want to attend, and *Amount of Guests (+3 Max). No other info is needed.

THUMP – This Friday night dance show aired nationwide on WGN (12:30 AM Pacific) is now shooting at Club Rio inside The Rio hotel on the first Friday of each month. They tape all the episodes for the month on one night, so this is a good chance to get your mug on TV and let your friends see a little of your Vegas vacation.

GROWTH – Nevada’s population since 1990 grew by nearly 800,000 to nearly 2 million last year and the Las Vegas area has ballooned to more than 1.3 million people. Story at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/aponline/20010313/aponline213045_000.htm Before you rush to move here, you might want to read a recent Christian Science Monitor article which compared Reno and Las Vegas and highlighted Southern Nevada’s problems in a stark manner. Story at http://www.csmonitor.com/durable/2001/03/13/fp12s1-csm.shtml

THEME WEDDINGS – In Las Vegas, you can get married dressed as the Phantom of the Opera, Merlin the Magician, the Godfather, Dracula, Mr. Spock from “Star Trek,” King Tut, King Arthur, and of course the king of kings in Vegas, Elvis Presley. “Do you agree to adopt each others’ hound dogs, not to wear your blue suede shoes in the rain? Then, by the powers vested in me, the king, I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss. Thank you, thank you very much.” Full story at http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/daily/detail/0,1136,38000000000106245,00.html

WINNERS! – Maureen Smithson of the Canary Isles and Suellen Reed of Las Vegas won the autographed Mac King T-shirts. Karen Chatsfield of Queensland, Australia won the PR photo set.

FEATURE STORY: Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas is about as close as you can come to a generic budget Las Vegas show. Fortunately, the price is modest and it doesn’t claim to be any more or any less. Las Vegas’ longest-running afternoon show combines singing, dancing, and comedy into an entertaining little mix.

Principal singer Natalie Carson opens the show and performs a number of songs throughout Viva accompanied by five sexy female dancers. It makes good entertainment and pleasant eye candy.

The comedy lineup is subject to change, but they manage to always have a couple of pretty good talents. The emcee (who’s name I failed to record — my apologies) had a few new twists on the standard Vegas jokes (losing at craps, the all-you-can-eat buffets) and kept everyone entertained.

Big John” Bruce Mickelson appeared later with his special brand of southern humor, playing the “good ole’ boy” that he probably is, and building up a great comedy performance with his comments on the way things are between men and women today.

Viva Las Vegas shares the showroom with American Superstars (reviewed https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-11-08.htm ). While a little bit boxy, the room has the latest in lights and sound and is large enough that you are seated around tables with plenty of elbow room. This helps contribute to the over quality feeling for a somewhat no-frills show.

The closing act is “Golden” Joe Baker who does an Elvis impression that is like none other. Kind? No. Entertaining? Not bad.

Viva Las Vegas performs daily except Sunday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Stratosphere’s Broadway Showroom. Tickets are $13.95 plus tax and may be purchased at the Stratosphere. Check by the casino cage first, as they have a rack of coupons that allow you to get the show free with the purchase of two drinks ($9.95). The show is “all ages,” but there are bare bottoms on the dancers and a few swear words and slight raunchy jokes in the comedy bits so bring children at your discretion.

Because the Stratosphere is located at the far north end of The Strip, it is wise to spend a few hours and take it all in. This time of year, you can catch the 4:00 PM Viva Las Vegas, head up to the top of tower for happy hour in the lounge (which lasts until 6:00 PM) enjoying cocktails with the view, and get to watch the sunset shortly after. Seeing both The Strip and downtown morph from day to night with that panoramic view is a fantastic experience. Also, you can buy a discounted ticket at the box office which includes tower admission and a buffet, getting both at a savings.

Editor’s Note: I received more negative email regarding last week’s review of “EFX Alive” starring Rick Springfield than I have ever received regarding any topic. While some of it was from subscribers, it appears that some was also orchestrated by fan club members (or similar). Guess what, Springfield fans: I grew up listening to Van Halen and Def Leppard and playing heavy guitar. If there was any guy I wanted to say nice things about, Springfield is one of them.

Unfortunately, the fans missed a very large point: I don’t write reviews to make a certain casino happy, nor someone’s fan base. My obligation is to the regular readers who spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars to come to Las Vegas. Their time is valuable and my goal is to present honest information that helps them make the most of your precious time here.

I am going to devote the letters section this week to their comments as my responses might provide a little insight into the “how” and “why” of my reviews. Because many of the letters echoed the same comments, and some weren’t signed, I will not be acknowledging specific writers.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

>I would like to offer explanations as to your
>other observances.á Firstly, please remember that at
>the time of your review this show has not even run a
>full six weeks.á During this initial period, Rick has
>been hit not once, but twice, with extremely bad colds
>and throat problems — to the extent of cancelling two
>days of shows and barely making it through another two
>performances.

Given that terrible bouts of cold and flu have been going through town the first two months of the year, this might explain some of the vocal problems and even the uninspired acting in the first act. I have been invited back to take another look at the show, and will do so in two months then file an updated report.

>The review of the FX ALive show in Vegas was very poorly done.á He
>claimed that the fan in the audience that Rick Springfield talked to,
>and talked on a cell phone was staged.á Well he obviously hasn’t been
>to any Rick’s concerts.á Nothing Rick does with the fans is staged.

It is staged. Mike Weatherford of the Review-Journal noted the same at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-09-Fri-2001/weekly/15392334.html I was informed that on tour he takes a phone from an audience member during “Don’t Talk To Strangers” and calls one of their friends. But I felt that staging it made for a very weak part of the show, and one that people outside of a star’s fan base wouldn’t find very interesting.

>I hope that your company provides health insurance.á Obviously this
>man is in need of medical attention for his ears.á His hearing must be
>fading.á Anyone that thinks Rick Springfield has limited range has
>some type of problem.á You have never heard Inside Silvia then either.
>He is a very talented musician, and has brought a renewed energy to
>EFX.

Many wrote similar to the above, noting the renewed energy Springfield brought to the show. Interesting, considering that Tommy Tune did about 10 straight minutes of tap dancing as well as dancing his way through much of the show. I’m not much of a Broadway nor a Tommy Tune fan, but I can’t say that the Springfield version had more energy.

>Maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to rip on him.á He was approached for
>the show many times before he finally agreed so obviously someone
>other than you knows talent when they see it.á I have seen nothing but
>positive reviews of Rick in EFX except for you and one other, but the
>positive FAR outweigh the negative.

Many sent me the list of positive “EFX Alive” reviews. A number of them were from publications that rely strictly on hotel advertising for their revenue. If a hotel is spending $10,000 on a full page ad, you think the publication is going to run a negative review? Just for kicks, I should put a big reward up to ANYBODY who can find a negative review of ANYTHING in the glossy tourist magazines you find in hotel lobbies or hotel rooms. They don’t exist.

Interestingly enough, my comments that the show is pretty spectacular but that Springfield struggled in areas were noted by Mike Weatherford (link noted earlier) and Erin Auerbach of Las Vegas Weekly at http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/departments/2001_03_08/stage.html

>Opinions are Great, everyone has one.á It is just a shame some people
>get paid to publish theirs.

I don’t get paid a dime to publish this newsletter. In fact, it eats up 15 hours of my week. I own http://www.accessvegas.com, http://www.accessvegas.com, http://www.accessvegas.com and other tourism websites. I started this newsletter because there were so few unbiased sources to help Las Vegas tourists. Instead of having to cozy up to hotels that buy advertising, I make my money from commissions. I can recommend one hotel over another, or one show over another because I’m making the same rate of commission no matter which you decide to book.

I only ask people that if they find this newsletter helpful, please compare our rates next time they need to book a hotel room or rental car not just here in Las Vegas, but anywhere they travel. (If you usually book by calling hotels directly, you might be surprised at how much less expensive Internet rates sometimes are). If we offer the same or better rates, we appreciate your support which you show by booking through the travel partners we link at the top of the newsletter.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:BEST OF LAS VEGAS – The Review-Journal’s “Best of Las Vegas 2000” is out! This unscientific survey still proves to be pretty accurate year in and year out, with each category having a “popular vote” winner as well as an “editor’s choice”. You can read it online at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/bestoflv/

MARCH MADNESS – and the beginning of the spring break season make March a very “mad” time here in Las Vegas. The sports books are jammed from morning until late night and the clubs are jammed from late night until sunrise. (When do these people sleep)? We found a great story that gives you a feel for the situation at http://www7.mercurycenter.com/premium/sports/docs/gamble17.htm

SKYDIVING FOR CHICKENS – (this includes me) is available at Flyaway Indoor Skydiving. For $35 you can get in their wind tunnel and experience a 120 wind keep you afloat just as if you were falling out of a plane. Full story and photo at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Mar-17-Fri-2000/weekly/13129167.html

THE HIGHWAY STATIONS – bill themselves as “The Stations you Listen to on the way to Las Vegas” from Southern California. They now have a website with Las Vegas information as well as live online feeds of their stations at http://www.thehighwaystations.com/main.html (One station is “lite” rock and the other is country). The fun thing about listening online is that they are very Las Vegas tourist oriented with constant info on Las Vegas events and activities.

PRICES: $15 admission fee allows unlimited access to all rides and shows except SkyScreamer. After April 30, it’s open weekends only until June 10. FEATURE STORY: Winning At Video PokerVideo poker has often been thought of as a “local’s game”. (We are tired of pulling a slot handle and at least want to put a little thought into it). It also is one of the few beatable games in the casino, provided you find the proper machines. Proper machines? Yes — video poker is about the one game where they display how tight the machine is right there on it!

Every single video poker machine in the state has to deal the same way. They randomly deal one deck of cards. Yet, the different machines pay different amounts back for THE EXACT SAME HANDS! For example, some machines pay 9 for a flush, some 8, and some less. Believe it or not, many casinos will have games sitting right next to each other that have different pay tables. Since the deal is the same, it’s much smarter to play the machines giving a higher payback on those flushes and straights so you can win more and play longer!

Proper play is also important. If you had four to the royal and a king of another suit as the fifth card, obviously you would toss the extra king (and the 1-1 payback) and go for that royal, right? Well, there are other more minor decisions that over time will benefit you just as well. Proper play is a must to extend your bankroll until you hit that royal.

The other important thing: always use your slot club card. A machine might only pay back 99.5% (with proper play), but if you are getting .5% cash back and / or good slot club points you can spend on food and rooms, you are breaking even (or better in a few cases).

We have a full page of gambling information to help make you a smarter player at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-gambling-online.htm I’m also listing a couple of books here that you might look into. Trust me, the few bucks you spend on a book will more than be paid back by the bigger comps you earn from smarter play on your very next visit. You should see my library of gambling books, and they paid for themselves a LONG time ago! Plus, they make a good read for that long plane ride here:

“The Las Vegas Advisor Guide to Slot Clubs” helps explain the why’s and how’s to make sure you get your comps when playing slots and video poker, as well as which programs are more generous. You are the customer. Go where you get the best deal – http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0929712757/invegascom

“The Frugal Gambler” is Jean Scott’s guide to getting the best and most comps. You have seen her on CBS, The Discovery Channel, and other Las Vegas documentaries. She stays and eats for free in Las Vegas 100 nights a year all while not losing a dime – http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0929712404/invegascom

“Winning Strategies for Video Poker” is a great way to learn all the major games played anywhere and includes strategy tables to optimize your play. Even if you are playing on an Indian reservation or riverboat where you can’t find a “full payback” game, it’s a lot better to look for the machines that come close! http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0962376639/invegascom

That is a great question. Personally, I think that taxing gaming winnings is a crime because 99.9% of everyone loses more than they win. Having said that, you can write off gaming losses, but they don’t make it easy. Keep a diary with you. Write down where you played (down to what table or machine number if possible), how long you played, what you bought in for, and what you cashed out with. You can deduct the losses against the wins, but you can’t deduct any more than that — i.e. if you won $4,200 during the year and lost $4,600, you can’t “write off” the aggregate $400 loss. The IRS doesn’t make it easy, does it?

Note: The Venetian Italian restaurant he spoke of is near Palace Station at Sahara and Valley view and has no relation to the Venetian hotel. I’m not much of Italian food guy. Anyone out here want to help us out here? allvegastv@aol.com

The cab will cost about the same (you didn’t mention where you are staying), but you get to go straight to your hotel. I’d go for it. Other options: In the same area you catch the shuttles, there are actual limos that will take you (and a bunch of others) to your hotels for $4-5 a head. The catch? You ride with a number of strangers. It’s just that you are in a limo and not a shuttle bus. There are usually also limos parked in that area that you can hire for $35 (plus tip) for a private ride to any hotel on the Strip or downtown.

We will be reviewing Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonico Steakhouse at The Venetian soon, but not in time for your trip. Everything I’ve heard about it is great, but consider $100 a person as your minimum if you are going to enjoy a full meal and drinks.
