Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! We had a short absence between newsletters. Every time we push the two week mark, many of you write and wonder if you missed one. We appreciate your loyalty, and if you read the October 25, 2006 edition, you have missed nothing since. New reader or not sure? Click on the above link to enjoy our previous issue.

Last week was a scheduled week off (from publishing). We went and paid homage to the Stardust and scouted some of the huge new construction at Venetian, Wynn and CityCenter. We’ll have updates over the next few weeks.

This week we delayed publishing 1. To not compete with the national elections which had many people riveted and talking and 2. We wanted to bring you as much information as possible to what happened in Nevada that may or may not affect you as a visitor and Las Vegas tourism in general.

Regular readers know that we are not a political publication. Hence, I am going to refrain from any commentary. Below you will find links to the major stories about the various issues related to Las Vegas and Nevada. Not into politics or just don’t care? Scroll on… this newsletter is jammed with the latest Las Vegas information you need to know!

I have been continuing to predict the following for quite some time: With all of the upscale new hotels and condo-tels, a couple of Las Vegas Strip properties are renewing their commitment to focus on the more moderate budget traveler:

Although the Tropicana is going to build a bunch of new towers and give the old casino and towers a big-time makeover, they won’t be attempting to compete with Wynn Las Vegas or Venetian. And after a year (or more) of The Riviera’s attempted sale, rumors of a sale, and plenty of speculation, they are digging in their heals to really remind people that they are an affordable option on The Strip.

The weather has been stunning, pushing 80 F and sunny on a regular basis. I’ll be spending the weekend by the pool. With major winter-type storms hitting the Midwest and flooding rain in my native Pacific Northwest, it is a great time to sneak away to Las Vegas!

Don’t miss our special section with links to stories about the closing of the Stardust at the end of the newsletter. Truly the end of an era.

Enjoy This Issue!

Review: Second City Las Vegas

by Nancy Dickinson

When life’s clutches seem to squeeze the soul for it’s last drop of vitality, it’s definitely time for a change of scenery- a reminder to make fun of it all and not take ourselves too seriously- a trip to experience Second City. This relatively scriptless, improvisational comedy show tucked secretly in a comfy showroom inside the Flamingo, packs a unique comic punch of which it’s knuckles don’t fail to graze anything- young, old, straight, gay, and grotesquely yet beautifully human. The final product is a show that literally puts all the fun back into mankind, dissecting the human condition relentlessly while exploiting everything at a satirical level off the charts. Gambling Talk: Poker By The ATC Method – with Victor H. Royer. I have been witness to poker plays which defy all logic, mathematics, reason or sense. Was it sheer bravado, or just pure luck? Was it really good play? How is it that many players can play with such aggressive abandon and win, and win, and win? Throughout the year I have thought about this. I have played in games and saw with my own eyes how players employ this way of playing and I was astounded by the frequency of their wins. I have tried this myself, and even with me it worked – some of the time. I surely am not an expert at this type of play. At least not yet. Click to Read Complete Article

Ted Responds
:

Andrew,

Although rumored for a New Year’s Eve implosion, the latest word is of an early spring implosion, using it for a grand kickoff to the construction of replacement Project Echelon Place. A New Year’s Eve implosion certainly would have been nice. However, the extra expenseá (crowd control and security) would have to be offset by a TV deal to broadcast it live on a network TV New Year’s Eve special. One can’t yet rule it out.

This is not without precedent: In the late 90’s, The Hacienda was imploded on New Year’s Eve to make way for Mandalay Bay, broadcast nationwide as part of Fox’s New Year’s TV special. We have that video for you in our streaming video section earlier in the newsletter.

Generally speaking, the loosest slots are in the “local’s” casinos around the Las Vegas Valley (you can’t clean the locals out as quickly, or they won’t keep coming back). Tightest are on The Strip, and downtown falls in between the two (according to regular state gaming reports which do not chart specific casinos). And generally speaking, the nicer the place, the tighter the slots. Those nice surroundings cost more to maintain!

Having said that, anyone can have good or bad luck in the few days of a visit. Play where you feel or seem lucky. Trust me, if I knew exactly where the hottest slots were, I’d be down playing them.

One last note: Sometimes slot attendants (what few that are left) or bartenders will point out “hot machines.” Bull. If they actually knew which machines were ready to pay, don’t you think they would be calling their friends, mate, or anyone else they knew to get in and play the thing? They only do that because if you actually do hit, you’ll feel obligated to give them a bigger tip.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Harrah’s Entertainment (Harrah’s, Ballys, Caesars Palace, Flamingo, Paris Las Vegas, Imperial Palace, Rio Suites, and about 35 other casino properties worldwide) has received a $15.05 billion buyout offer from a couple of investment firms. This is very recent news, and not much fall-out yet. I’ll give you my take as we learn more.

In a much more interesting note, Harrah’s (the company) is going to acquire the Barbary Coast from Boyd Gaming (the people soon to blow up the Stardust and build the $3.5 billion Echelon Place on that area).

For those wanting more details and my take on how this will affect visitor room rates, you can read my recent blog post Harrahs Getting Bought Out, Las Vegas Condo Hotels Good For Visitors?

We say goodbye to Clint Holmes and the show Splash as this month begins. We’ll say more about Splash next week, but we can’t say enough about Clint Holmes. He was one-of-a-kind, in the mold of Sammy Davis, Jr. (with talent to match).

Many move to Las Vegas and simply count their money, but Clint was out and about, available for charity and always engaged in the community. He’s off to London to fulfull a life-long dream of starring in a play he’s written and we wish him all the best. We leave you with a couple of Clint Holmes tidbits to check out:

We are running our review of Gerry McCambridge – The Mentalist, but if you want to see him (and you should), act fast. He is playing at The Stardust, and the hotel does close at the end of this month. We arranged to see the show before the hotel closure was moved up, and had an internal delay as our shows writer Nancy is expecting her first child! We are excited for her, but for obvious reasons, we’ve been giving her some extra time to get assignments done to cope with the ups and downs of a first pregnancy.

Bottom Line: Go see the show if you are coming in the next month. If not, read about it here as the show is very popular and certain to find a new Las Vegas showroom soon. We’ll keep you posted!

Show Review: Gerry McCambridge – The Mentalist

Reviewed September, 2006
by Nancy Dickinson

It’s plain good ol’ Las Vegas tradition to capture the awe of viewers with dynamic props, extravagant effects, unconventional talent, and unparalleled showmanship (though often an overkill). One man, however, opens doors to the hearts, emotions, and spirits of people using entertainment weapons that far surpass the need for a stage crew: His mind and the minds of those he encounters.

Gerry McCambridge, better known as “The Mentalist,” has the undeniable ability to get into the heads of any and everybody. So much so that his 20 year cerebral career journey has taken him from celebrity events to a major NBC television series to his own full blown show at The Stardust. This man knows what is going on in the head of any person at any given time, facts ranging from their specific idiosyncratic personal habits to the exact name of their very first crush…and he is so freakishly accurate. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Big week here with the announcement that the new Beatles-themed Cirque du Soleil show at The Mirage will be named “Love.” Love will bring the magic of Cirque du Soleil together with the spirit and passion of The Beatles music to create a vivid, intimate and powerful entertainment experience. It will be presented in a custom-built theatre at The Mirage featuring 360-degree seating and advanced high definition video projections with 100-foot digital, moving images. The panoramic surround sound system features speakers in each seat!

Last month, I was in the line at the grocery store about midnight and struck up a conversation with a couple in front of me who just so happened to be in this new production. They were very, very excited (although exhausted) about how rehearsals were coming along! When the performers are that excited, you know it should be a great show! Ticket info coming very soon.

Clint Holmes at Harrah’s

Reviewed February, 2006
by Nancy Hruska

clint holmes harrah's las vegas hotels Though Vegas is known for shows where nearly anything goes, few entertainers would dare to mix musical genres such as Opera, Salsa, Broadway, and Jazz. Clint Holmes, however, has taken that road less traveled and the result is revolutionary enough for Rolling Stone to call it, “One of the most complex musical shows ever.”

Any recognition such as that could cause a performer’s head to swell, but Clint Holmes views his talent a little differently. He constantly attributes the success of his show to his cherished (and most dynamic) band, his family, and the cultural diversity of his upbringing. His energetic and deeply personal show is a journey through music that takes even Las Vegas by surprise. Click To Read The Complete Review

MSNBC just did a story regarding the drop in international tourists visiting the United States. In part, the story reads:

US tourism industry leaders and top government officials on Tuesday urged collaboration between the public and private sectors to stem shrinking US market share of international visitors.

Business leaders have voiced deep concerns over a decline in international visitors due partly to more bureaucratic US visa policies and a battered image overseas September 11, 2001.

US market share of international tourism is at an all-time low, dropping 35 per cent between 1992 and 2004, which translates into $286bn in lost revenue, according to the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA).

We know that many AccessVegas.com readers come to Las Vegas from around the world to enjoy our city, and we want your input. Are you traveling here less? Is it more of a hassle? What changes would you like to see be made?

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Super Bowl weekend was huge, with about 285,000 people in town, and it seems like everybody had a bet on the game. I have little interest in either team and simply bet for fun. In Nevada, we call it a “TV bet” when you bet on a game just to have some rooting interest. I lost my bet (Seattle to win +165 … that means I picked Seattle to win and would have been paid $165 for every $100 I bet … getting a bonus for taking the underdog) but had fun watching the game.

Valentines Day is almost here. Guys … if you are like me, you forget about it until the last minute. Well … now it’s the last minute and if you want to bring that special lady to Las Vegas, don’t delay. Rooms are going very, very, very fast. I would do the following:

1. Visit our friends at Las Vegas Hotel Deals and lock up that room immediately.

2. She’ll forgive that you flew in coach on some discount airline (and almost forgot about Valentines) if you treat her with a limo ride from the airport. So book your Las Vegas Limo Reservation now. And if you can’t get the mid-week off to take her, make her day special with a card that says “We are going to Vegas soon!”

Carrot Top Review: I Can’t Believe I
Watched the Whole Show, and I Liked It!

By Phil Arnold
December 2005

Carrot Top las vegas hotels hiltonHow long has Carrot Top been around and how famous is he? I don’t have a clue about the answer to those questions, and his web site certainly didn’t help me find out information. Carrot Top may be a publicity hound, but what does that have to do with his show? Nothing I guess. I enjoyed watching this show and I was surprised.

Carrot Top does annoying commercials, kind of looks like the Wendy’s girl as he brings up in his show, but he is a unique type of comic. He is what I call a prop comic. I have seen this before in Las Vegas with a comic by the name of Joe Trammel. But Carrot Top is much more accomplished and has about four trunks of props he goes through during a show, maybe more. Miss Oklahoma Wins The 2006 Miss America Competition In Las Vegas – Miss Oklahoma Jennifer Berry was crowned Miss America 2006 at The Aladdin Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Her walk across the stage marked her first steps on a journey that will take her from spotlight to spotlight, coast to coast, traveling approximately 20,000 miles each month during her upcoming year of service.

Jennifer Berry, 22, a resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a student at the University of Oklahoma. She is majoring in elementary education. With the title, Berry won a $30,000 scholarship to continue her education. She was crowned Miss America during the final competition, which aired live from Las Vegas on CMT. Berry performed ballet en pointe as her talent selection for the evening. Click to read full story …

Superbowl Parties – The N.F.L. (No Fun League) has outlawed the type of Superbowl parties thrown by Las Vegas in years gone by. Casinos used to set up multiple huge screens in a convention room, charge one door fee for all-you-can-eat-and-drink plus huge prize giveaways, the Miller/Bud/Coors girls … you get the idea. The N.F.L. has determined that charging admission to see the game in any form (even if the fee is to cover party essentials) is not legal, and has banned hotels from doing so.

However, with legal betting, Superbowl Sunday is the biggest sporting day of the year here and every hotel and bar shows the game on every screen in the place. In fact, many set up special screens in the gaming areas so you can roll the dice while you root on your team (or the team you bet on). Next week, we should have some details on specific events (game specials, etc.) various hotels may be having.

Rainbow Bar & Grill Unveils Famous Familiar Faces – Star-struck fans will enjoy dining next to rock n’ roll legends next time they visit the Rainbow Bar & Grill. For weeks, patrons have wondered what was lurking under the black curtain behind the main bar in the popular rock n’ roll restaurant. After working with designers from Las Vegas-based RECRE-ART, the likenesses of Ozzy Osbourne, Guns n’ Roses guitarist Slash (pictured), Jimi Hendrix and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler have emerged from the wall. Gambling Talk: Poker: The Man With No Tells – with Victor H. Royer. He’s a legend, quietly going about his poker career with little or no fanfare. He has never been noted by the media and never written about, yet he is as famous in poker circles as any champion. Perhaps this is because he has never played in any tournament. That is his choice. He is an extremely private man, and shies away from public exposure. He is quiet and unassuming. He plays his game and says little. He is a consummate professional and a thorough gentlemen, well respected and liked by all who know him. His game is high-stakes hold-em, and sometimes seven-stud … Click to continue reading The Man With No Tells

Vegas Streaming Video Of The Week – Aladdin Implosion. . With so many announced and pending changes (Boardwalk closing, Tropicana getting close to a huge make-over, Castaways/Showboat imploded), we thought it would be fun to look back at the implosion of the original Aladdin. As you may know, the new Aladdin never performed up to expectations, and is in the middle of a major make-over and conversion to Planet Hollywood. Click To Watch: The Implosion of The Aladdin Hotel

Vegas Photo Set Of The Week – Check out the fantastic photos of Zumanity by Cirque du Soleil, a show for lovers, would-be lovers, and anyone whose imagination has ever been sparked by the idea of love. The international cast, consisting of 50 eclectic and flirtatious performers and musicians awaken primal urges to a new form of eroticism blending movement, style, acrobatics, uninhibited costumes and beautiful bodies with the sensual caress of the human voice and insistent pulse of exotic rhythms.

Vegas Book Of The Week – Back in the day when gangsters ran Las Vegas, this was the surest bet in town: mention Frank Sinatra in the same breath with the mob and nasty things happened to knee caps. Friends of Frank likely won’t be happy to hear that entertainment icon Jerry Lewis is going public about Ol’ Blue Eyes’ wiseguy ties. Sinatra, who went to his grave denying any mafia association, was a mob courier, Lewis says in the new book “Sinatra: The Life.” Read full story …

Show Review: Amazing Johnathan

by Nancy Hruska

Well, it looks as though conventional magic and traditional punch line comedy have viciously been tossed out a 20 story hotel casino. Their replacements? Shameful jokes, psychic strippers, humiliated audience members, bad karate theatre, and the revival of the lost art of foam magic. The perpetrator? The Amazing Johnathan.

When it comes to competitive top Las Vegas shows, a comic magician who is undyingly abrasive with absolutely no sense of shame could be a recipe for disaster. But in Johnathan&’s show, where nothing is sacred and no act too vile, this guy is just pure genius. Click to read the complete review …

Bye-Bye Boardwalk – After almost 40 years on the Las Vegas Strip the Boardwalk hotel-casino is now officially closed. The MGM-Mirage is tearing down the property to build Project City Center. The $5 billion development is expected to open in 2010. It will include a 60-story, 4,000-room hotel-casino, boutique hotels, a major shopping mall and more than 1,600 luxury condominiums. Click to Read Full Story (with streaming video)

Purple Reign Moves To Monte Carlo – In related news, Boardwalk regular performers Purple Reign (Prince Tribute Show) have moved to the Monte Carlo, where they recreate the sights and sounds of Prince at the Monte Carlo Pub and Brewery every Wednesday at 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. There is no cover charge and patrons must be at least 21 years of age.

Purple Reign takes the audience on a musical journey of some of Prince&’s greatest hits. The group&’s repertoire includes popular songs such as &”Let’s Go Crazy,&” &”You’ve Got the Look,&” &”Kiss,&” &”Take Me With You,&” &”Raspberry Beret,&” &”Little Red Corvette,&” &”1999&” and &”Purple Rain.&” One of Las Vegas’ hottest nightspots, the Monte Carlo Pub & Brewery is one of the largest microbreweries in the country.

A New Day For Legends in Concert – Celine Dion Joins Celebrity Tribute Spectacular – There’s a new day coming with Brigitte Valdez returning as Celine Dion in “Legends in Concert,” the award-winning celebrity tribute at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. With an incredibly strong voice and fabulous costumes, Valdez transforms herself into the incomparable diva to perform “I Drove All Night,” “Because You Love Me,” “Power of Love,” “That’s the Way It Is” and “My Heart Will Go On.” Valdez last performed as Celine Dion in Legends in 2003. The Most Extravagant and Expensive Burger Experience Ever Conceived – In the land of $100 margaritas and $1,000 shots of whiskey, it should come as no surprise that Las Vegas is now home to an extravagant burger-eating experience to rival all others. Renowned Chef Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay presents FleurBurger 5000, a gastronomic jackpot. The fois gras and black truffle-topped Kobe burger is served on a brioche truffle bun and garnished with Chef Keller’s special sauce consisting of, you guessed it, more truffles.

To accompany this decadent burger, guests enjoy a bottle of Chateau Petrus 1990 poured in Ichendorf Brunello stemware, exclusively imported from Italy. After the meal, the team at Fleur de Lys ship the glasses to the guest’s home at no additional charge. This level of decadence can be savored for $5,000.

Sexiest Shows in VegasFantasy at Luxor Tops the List AOL cityguide recently voted Fantasy at Luxor the &”Sexiest Show in Vegas!&” Set in Luxor&’s 350-seat Atrium Showroom, this provocative adult revue brings fantasies to life with the sizzling Fantasy dancers. Choreographed by Cris Judd and Eddie Garcia and produced by Emmy-award winner Anita Mann, Fantasy features sultry costumes and delicious dance numbers that tempt audiences with just the right amount of seduction.

Fantasy wasn&’t the only MGM MIRAGE show to make the list: La Femme at MGM Grand, straight from the Crazy Horse in Paris, holds the number three spot, while those sexy Aussies of Thunder From Down Under at Excalibur and Cirque du Soleil&’s Zumanity at New York-New York made #9 and #10 respectively.

New TI Bridge Gives Guests Easy Access – Shopping has become another great reason to visit Las Vegas, with easy access to many high-end luxury stores you would only find all together in Los Angeles or New York. Now a Las Vegas shopping excursion is even easier with Treasure Island&’s new pedestrian bridge connecting the AAA Four Diamond award-winning property to the Fashion Show mall.

An elegant rotunda entryway and large screen video display welcome guests traveling to and fro with escalators to the bridge conveniently located inside TI between Tangerine Lounge & Nightclub and Canter’s Deli. Fashion Show is one of the nation’s largest shopping malls featuring more than 250 specialty shops and restaurants as well as seven high-end flagship department stores including Bloomingdale’s Home Furniture Store, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Robinsons-May and Saks Fifth Avenue. Castaways Goes Boom – The old Castaways hotel-casino is no more. The 19-story off-Strip hotel — which used to be known as the Showboat — was imploded shortly after 7 a.m. this morning about three miles east of downtown Las Vegas. The casino had closed in January 2004 after changing hands in bankruptcy court. Click to Read Full Story (with streaming video) (Editors Note: There was virtually no advance warning to the media about this implosion or we certainly would have let you know).

Vegas Streaming Video Of The Week – Elton John: The Red Piano. The career of international singer/songwriter and performer Elton John has spanned more than three decades. By all measures, he is one of the world’s most successful touring artists and one of the top-selling solo artists of all time. The Red Piano 2006 Show Schedule: January: 31 February: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19 March: 28, 29, 31 April: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9. Tickets sell out very fast. Elton John Las Vegas is a concert to be sure to see while in town. Click To Watch: Elton John – The Red Piano

Vegas Photo Set Of The Week – Check out the fantastic photos of The Golden Nugget. Vegas Book Of The Week – Las Vegas chefs are getting scrutiny in another new dining book, as well. It is “Reservations Required” by Henderson resident Sarah Lee Marks. Marks covers 26 chefs. She provides for each a brief biography, restaurant description and two of the chef’s favorite recipes. The mix is mostly chefs of restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip, but includes restaurants at Lake Las Vegas and outlying neighborhoods, as well. Read full story …

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! After I sent out the last issue (April 6, 2002 – available in archives) I headed downtown to Fremont St. to have the Binion’s late night steak. (Whaddya think … I fly in to do this stuff? I’m live in Vegas 24/7)! Saw a print ad shoot for the new 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo right there next to Binion’s and the Golden Nugget, and yes they had the car out there. Bright red, with a blonde model sitting in it. You never know what you will see in Las Vegas!

Speaking of, Binion’s has reopened their original coffee shop downstairs from the casino after using the upstairs buffet area as a substitute for the past couple of years. They still have the full steak dinner for $4.99 from 11 PM – 7 AM and well worth stopping in for.

We are making a publication change. Nothing startling. This present twice-monthly, mid-length format has been unbelievably well received. However, breaking hotel specials and updates happen more than twice a month. So on the “off” week from the full newsletter, we will send our new Access Vegas Update:

A quick, simple one page bulletin of late breaking specials and updates to help you with your Las Vegas vacation planning that you can read in a matter of minutes.

E! MODEL SEARCH – Were we at the Maryweather / Castillo fight Saturday night? Maybe Tiger Jam? Heck no … E! invited us to Rain Nightclub at The Palms for the one of the casting calls of E! Wild On. They are looking for a replacement for Wild On host Brooke Burke. Hundreds of women from all over the West coast were interviewed in this hot new nightclub. Full details and info on coming casting locations at http://www.eonline.com/On/Wild/HostSearch We’ll try to keep you posted for when this casting special airs. In the meantime, E! airs all of the “Vegas Showgirls: Nearly Famous” episodes back-to-back May 4. Check local listings for time.

MAN OF 1002 VOICES – I’m proud to be one of the first touting comedic impressionist Larry G. Jones right here in this newsletter, and his accolades keep growing. The Las Vegas Sun (afternoon daily) just said “If you can’t afford Danny Gans go see Larry G. Jones.” That must be put in perspective as Gans’ tickets start at around $80. Jones’ talent is right up there and it’s nice of Fitzgeralds to offer this show at a one drink minimum. More info is on Jones’ site at http://www.lasvegasacts.com

For all the people who say there are no good deals left in Vegas … go enjoy Jones (Tue. – Sat. at 5 PM upstairs at Fitzgeralds), $1.25 beers at Las Vegas Club, 99 cent shrimp cocktails at Golden Gate, see the free Fremont St. Experience light show (top of every hour after dark), then finish off the night with Binion’s $4.99 complete steak dinner. Where else can you get a night of entertainment and food for less than a $20.00 bill all within 4 blocks?

GRAND CANYON – Contrary to popular belief, the Grand Canyon isn’t at 20 minute drive from The Strip. If you drive, you have just begun when you hit Hoover Dam (45 minutes from The Strip). Hence, we don’t suggest bus tours unless you want to spend the majority of your day on a bus, only to see a small corner of the Canyon. And save Hoover Dam for a visit when you can spend an hour or two enjoying it.

We do suggest helicopter tours and are proud to continue our affiliation with Maverick. We could have gone with anybody, but Maverick is simply the best. Unlike many companies quoting bargain prices (then tacking on substantial “taxes and fees”), Maverick quotes you the entire price right up front. They have the best safety record, most comfortable ASTAR Jet Helicopters, and they fly further and deeper into the Canyon.

Your vacation time is very valuable and seeing the Grand Canyon is worth doing right. Many of the concierges at top area hotels call Maverick first. Check out the Maverick difference at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/maverick Like a good restaurant, Maverick flights fill up fast and early so consider booking online in advance of your visit. If you call, make sure to mention promo code “Access Vegas” to get our special rates.

FREE POOL PARTY – Join 105.7 FM Wednesday nights for Smooth Jazz at the Whisky Sky Bar by the pool in the Green Valley Ranch. The Oasis’ Gwen Abbott will be your host and have lots of Oasis prizes as well. Wednesday, May 1 features Turning Point including Native American, and Middle Eastern dancers. Wednesday, May 8th, Gregg Karukas will perform. His single, ôNight Shift,ö just spent two weeks at number one on the national Smooth Jazz charts. Parties are scheduled to continue on Wednesday evenings and the view from Whisky Sky Bar must be seen!

CABBIES – Just a reminder: Las Vegas cab drivers get kickbacks from various shows, clubs, strip joints and more. If you ask to go somewhere, they often firmly try to persuade you to go somewhere else by telling you that your selection isn’t as good. Also keep this in mind when asking them for general advice on what to go, see, or do. We have a host of show reviews online at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com so check with us first and make up your own mind!

CLINT HOLMES – launches his third year at Harrah’s. They have christened the showroom as the “Clint Holmes Theater” and it is a well deserved honor. He continues to rack up accolades with his mix of contemporary, pop, jazz, and calypso selections that make up a complete, fantastic performance. If you are sitting there going “who” or just wondering about his show, please read our archived review at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/clint-holmes-las-vegas-shows.htm

TRAVEL TIP – Sun Country airlines has resumed service post 9/11 and are hubbing out of Laughlin, Nevada (90 miles south of Las Vegas) on the West Coast. If you are traveling between cities they serve you’d be wise to check out their fares. Using Laughlin as a hub is a great cost-saver because of the isolation of the area (little air traffic or military airspace to dodge which means less time in the traffic pattern).

Sun Country serves Minneapolis, Laughlin, Orlando, Ft. Myers, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas (from Minneapolis only), Denver, Seattle, Portland, and Dallas. Their number is 1-800-359-6786.

CELINE DION – Yes, she is coming for an extended run at Ceasars. Yes, she is already living in town. Yes, the show is said to be moving along well. No, we don’t have a launch date for it. Yes, we will let you know the minute we know and make tickets available.

TYSON / LEWIS FIGHT – isn’t going to be in Las Vegas. Memphis, TN gave it the green light. If you’ve never experienced a big fight live you can check out fight package pricing and availability at http://www.thereservationcompany.com/trceppricing.cfm?amid=143&eventid=3

MESSAGE BOARDS – A big thanks to those who are starting to participate and help fill up our new message boards. This is the place to post any questions you have, then post your comments when you return from Las Vegas! We already have some great people giving comments and I’m in there ever few days to help answer questions as well. Come visit and post at http://boards.accessvegas.com

SHOW REVIEWS:

MIDNIGHT FANTASY – Las Vegas seems to have a topless show on every corner now. The old standbys like Folies Bergere and Jubilee have it as part of a bigger production. Crazy Girls makes it the centerpiece of a bawdy production. La Femme features the “artistic value.”

Midnight Fantasy has taken a different angle. There is just about as much topless time as can be squeezed into a production show, and even the comedian jokes about it being a “t*ttie show.” However, the Midnight Fantasy title doesn’t describe male fantasies, but female fantasies.

Each vignette starts with narration setting up a scene of a breathless female fantasy that is played out through choreography, staging and costumes. Although the limited stage keeps the props to a minimum, this actually works as fantasy is more about the mind and acted out by the dancers.

They have avoided the traditional “showgirl” look, instead paying great attention to the unique and provocative wardrobe worn by the dancers and cast. Red leather chaps and cowboy hats, rhinestone bustiers, filmy negligees and business suits are a few of the elements that add to the storyline. As the fantasy story heats up in each vignette, the costumes become more revealing.

I’ve got to hand it to the cast which features vocalist Charidy Sullivan LaFontaine, dancer / impressionist Sean Cooper, and comedian John Padon plus nine beautiful dancers. When there is a weak spot, whether with the main performance or the specialty acts, it can bog down an entire show. LaFontaine has a nice voice and connects with the audience on a solid level. The crowd fell in love with Cooper, who’s comedic impression of Tina Turner was memorable, as was his entire routine.

John Pardon had the standard “Vegas” jokes mixed in with quick-paced comments on life. While no Andrew “Dice” Clay he does use some adult language. But like he said … “Hey … what do you expect … you are at a t*ttie show.” The cast of dancers and choreography was strong throughout the performance, something not always expected from a mid-priced show. Because the show delves into female fantasies from a woman’s prespective, Midnight Fantasy is a fine couples show (provided the lady is comfortable with this subject matter to begin with).

Midnight Fantasy is a production show running nightly (dark Monday) at the Luxor hotel. Pricing and advance reservations available at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=197&cityid=1

EDITOR NOTES:

I was expecting a bigger negative response to last week’s “tell it like it is” articles on the pitfalls of playing for comps and gambling with slot club cards (which focus you on points, not how much more you are losing to “earn” points).

Out of 16,000+ subscribers, only two (2) wrote in and said that they use their club card and break even or end up ahead every year when they factor in the freebies. I thought that number would be just a little higher, but further shows that playing to “earn” comps isn’t a way to beat Las Vegas.

Yes, our city on sale (above) for the third straight week is Las Vegas. Our hotel partner HRN decides each week’s city, and for some reason they have left Las Vegas specials running for three weeks now. If you were debating, I’d take advantage of the specials now. I can’t guarantee we will have Las Vegas specials another week.

Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HOTEL FIRE – This just in: The Gold Spike Hotel Casino downtown (a cheap, rundown place downtown near Lady Luck) caught fire about 11 AM this morning. Seventeen were hurt attempting to get out, but none of the injuries were serious. The damage was confined to one room where a man and woman first reported their mattress on fire. Because of the 1980 fire at Bally’s (then the MGM Grand), Clark County (Las Vegas) now has some of the most stringent hotel fire safety codes in the world.

NEW LOUNGES – Caesars Palace and Paris Las Vegas have both jumped into the fray created by the success of V-Bar at Venetian (which we reported on a few weeks ago). Can anyone say “Bond … James Bond”? That seems to be the feel and era they are both working to recreate. Paris Las Vegas has opened Vamp from 10 PM – 4 AM on weekend nights. Vamp promises visually stimulating fashion, pulsating laser light spectrum and stylish, vogue lounge dancers with a cover of $15.

Caesars has Shadow, featuring contemporary designs with eclectic furnishings. What will stand out is the constant presence of provocative Shadow concierges. Visible only through a sheer scim screen, these multiple silhouette dancers will perform choreographed dance routines to original music and the mingle with the guests acting as lounge hostesses when not dancing. Shadow will be open 24/7 with the dancers in attendance evenings. Cover (if any) was not disclosed.

WORLD SERIES OF POKER – has been over for a couple of weeks now, but I found a good article giving a firsthand rundown of the yearly Las Vegas spectacle at http://www.freep.com/news/casinos/gam25_20010525.htm

PORN HANDBILLS – The Nevada Supreme Court ruled in a mixed opinion Thursday that The Mirage and Treasure Island are entitled to restrict the distribution of sexually oriented handbills on their sidewalks though they are used by the public. This is another step in the long fight between the resorts and the companies who pass out the handbills. The handbill companies claim free speech while the resorts suggest they have certain rights to the areas that front their properties. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-18-Fri-2001/news/16124818.html

SUMMER IS HERE – With the temperatures generally climbing, we can’t stress enough the importance of drinking plenty of water while out there. Because of the very low humidity, you perspire greatly but don’t realize it because it evaporates off of your body immediately. Drinking booze dehydrates you further. Either way, we suggest stopping by the hotel bars on a regular basis and grabbing a bottled water. Your body will thank you, your stamina will by higher, and you’ll enjoy your vacation a lot more.

KIDS QUEST – The new Palms Hotel Casino (under construction near The Rio) is going to have a child care center. These centers are already popular at some “local’s” casinos around town. Story at http://twincities.bcentral.com/twincities/stories/2001/05/07/daily25.html

SOUTH STRIP – Recently, a continuing series on urban hikes in Las Vegas focuses on the Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, and Four Seasons hotels. Included are good synopses of the attractions at each and worth printing out before you next trip. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-13-Sun-2001/living/16040904.html

HARRAH’S – scored a number of wins in the recent “Best of Las Vegas” put out by the Review-Journal. Clint Holmes (read our archived review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/01-02-21.htm ) was voted “Best Singer,” “Best All-around Las Vegas Performer,” and “Favorite Male Las Vegan.” He has also been inducted into the Casino Legends Hall of Fame at the Tropicana (Hall of Fame review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-09-15.htm ).

Additionally, The Improv was voted “Best Comedy Club” and the Carnival Court was voted “Best Lounge.” The Carnival Court is definitely one of the more fun stops to party on the Strip, especially on weekend evenings when they have live blackjack outdoors to compliment the festive surroundings and live music. Discount Harrah’s rooms at hhttp://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm (Harrah’s link).

$100 REBATE SPECTACULAR! Our partners at Hotel Reservations Network are giving you up to $100 back on any stay in Las Vegas or any major city they reserve. (Full details and list of all eligible cities at http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/coupon?SID=IVC&Dest=LAS&LKF=IVC&PROD=HOTEL ). Claiming your cash is simple:

1. Print out: http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/coupon?SID=IVC&Dest=LAS&LKF=IVC&PROD=HOTEL
2. Book a room online at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm
3. Send in for your rebate when you get home.

It doesn’t get any easier than that, and you get their low price guarantee
to boot!

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. FEATURE STORIES: Andre-Philippe Gagnon

The lights went down, and Mick Jagger hit the stage. Almost. Andre-Philippe Gagnon, “the man of a thousand voices” hit the stage backed by a tight four piece band and did a dead-on impression (both physically and vocally) of the Stones lead singer.

Gagnon is part impressionist and all comedian. With a repertoire of hundreds of voices from Sinatra to Axl Rose, from Sting to Barry White, he shows extreme versatility during the 75 minute show. After Jagger, he establishes his talent by rolling through Lou Rawls, Julio and Willie (in duet), and Tom Jones among others.

Then comes “Bill: The Musical” which is a hilarious multi-act “play” based on the Clinton / Lewinsky saga. Songs by Sting, Louis Prima, Barry White, and Marvin Gaye are twisted lyrically to make a nonpartisan comedic set that had the audience breaking out in laughter a number of times.

Taking a swing at pop culture, he noted the Beatles songs now used in commercials and proceeded to give us other “what if” examples in a medley of Beatles songs turned to commercials. He then proceeded to do the same with varied artists such as James Brown, Joe Cocker, REM, Alice Cooper, The Oakridge Boys, and Dire Straits.

A Gagnon show is like being hit with rapid fire bullets. He weaves together verses of different songs, seldom even doing half a song by any one artist. What makes it work is his talent, blending flawlessly from both the voice and mannerisms of one performer to another. His band must receive serious credit themselves for the ability to jump from style to style to style and sound great.

He pulled out the big guns toward the close of the show. Lest one think that his talent is based strictly on working to mimic famous talents, he picked a random man out of the audience and had this man sing a few bars of a song. Gagnon then replicated the man dead-on … with not just the vocal quality (or lack thereof in this case) but the cadence. He then did a duet of the song with them man, moving the microphone back and forth between himself and this audience member every few words. With eyes closed, you couldn’t have told the difference.

He opened for Celine Dion in 1998 for her world tour, and she has a part in his show. Appearing via video screen, he sings a duet with her using not his own voice but Sinatra’s. The result was very impressive. There is one more surprise involving audience participation, but I’ll leave this impressive and hilarious bit a surprise. (No one in the audience is embarrassed or anything — have no fear).

EDITOR NOTES: This will be the last week I publish “Kids In Vegas” letters. The letters are a representative sample of responses. It’s been a great debate, but we need to move on to other topics. It is not my job to get in the middle of the “video poker pro”
debates. (Right now, there is great controversy among “professional”
video poker players about which pro’s method for beating the machines
is better.) I assume people are smart enough to check his stuff out
and decide for themselves, and I’ve had links to a number of other VP
resources listed for years on my gambling page at
http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-gambling-online.htm

I merely used Mr. Singers comment as well as an article by a noted gaming writer to back up my point and I gave credit to both sources. I firmly believe that slot cards are a downfall to 99% of the players who use them. They get people focused on points, not their bankroll.

For every video pro out there who tells people how they can break even
or make a few bucks playing video poker (putting tens of thousands of
dollars a month through the machines, and factoring in their comps to
say they ended up ahead), there are hundreds of thousands of people
who get trapped into playing more than they planned.

The average visitor is here to party and have fun, and if I can help
them from going beyond their gambling budget I feel as though I’ve
done a good thing.

THE PALMS – is the name of the new boutique hotel / casino going in across the street from The Rio. With a combination of trendy dance clubs and high end dining, they are looking to challenge The Hard Rock, The Rio, and Mandalay Bay as the “in” spot for the young, trendy crowd with deep pockets. STORM – The delays in Mandalay Bay’s new show is attributed to additional building inspections following some design changes during the construction of the set as well as the production not being completely ready yet. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-20-Tue-2001/living/15666596.html

BETTING BAN – Your US Senators and Congressmen are working on legislation to outlaw all betting on college sports (something only legal in the state of Nevada). They are doing this at the urging of the NCAA, who are absolutely positive that once legal college sports betting is killed, all college sports betting will cease to exist.

If you enjoy betting college sports under the safe, controlled atmosphere that Nevada provides, drop your US legislators a quick note letting them know you oppose the federal government telling Nevada what they can offer wagering on. WE’VE GOT POWER – Regarding the possibility of The Strip going dark this summer, Mark Shank, Nevada Power Co.Æs director of regional transmission, said the difference between keeping the lights on here and California’s rolling blackouts comes down to paying the bills, something California has been struggling with for months. ôWe’ve already secured our contracts for this summer. We’re well prepared for the peak operating hours facing us in the coming months.ö Full story at http://news.mywebpal.com/news_tool_v2.cfm?show=localnews&pnpID=779&NewsID=69202&on=0

How much juice does a casino use? The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinal had an interesting story on that at http://www.sun-sentinel.com/business/sfl-zvegas28mar28.story?coll=sfla%2Dbusiness%2Dheadlines

MORE CASINOS – A Las Vegas legislator has proposed a bill that would allow Strip-area time share projects to have casinos, but knowledgeable sources say the bill will likely face opposition from the gaming industry. The hotel/casinos will probably oppose it, not wanting any competition. It would allow places like The Jockey Club and Polo Towers (among others) on The Strip to offer gaming.

The customer usually wins with more casino opportunities. Some of the best blackjack rules and loosest slots in the US are in Nevada because of competition. Story at http://www.hotel-online.com/Neo/News/2001_Mar_22/k.LVT.985328040.html

FEATURE STORY: Blue Man Group

If you are at Luxor in the evening and see people walking around covered in (what looks like) toilet paper, don’t assume they lost a fight in the restroom. They were just at Blue Man Group. While I hate to give away too much about shows like this, the finale is each night is a celebration that must single-handedly keep a paper mill in business.

Blue Man Group is theater, but not the kind you might expect. After success in New York, Boston, and Chicago this troop pulled out all the stops for Las Vegas, where the Luxor gave them twice as many seats to fill.

What is Blue Man Group? Space aliens from Nevada’s notorious Area 51 “secret” military base? Were the sent here to study us or overwhelm us? Perhaps a little of both.

Blue Man Group consists of three men in skullcaps and cobalt blue face (and head) paint which stays wet, giving them an eerie “alive from the inside out” look. They never speak. They do act and react.

The show is artistic and colorful, but in a very abstract way. It opens with them beating on drums as they squirt neon colored water on the other’s drum in amazement at the colorful splash.

From there, a simple game of catch is played across the stage, with one of the members tossing colored food objects at the other two for them to catch with their mouths. One of them paints a pretty canvas using colored fluid projected from his mouth, while the other creates a “sculpture” from the foodstuff and finishes this act with what is insightful commentary on modern art.

This progresses to more entertainment with food, where Cap’n Crunch cereal is consumed and crunched to the beat of the heavily rhythmic music performed by a live band. Not any band, mind you, but one that performs dressed in bright neon outfits far above the stage. The multitude of colors that make up the cereal blend with in with the constant color themes we continue to be exposed to.

The food theme is retained for one more segment that is the most comedic of the show. Imagine how someone who has never seen a twinkie before would get it out of the wrapper, let alone eat it. They seem mystified with each other and what they are doing, but that only serves to set the audience up. We get lulled into a mellow, curious, slightly comedic mindset — then our senses are attacked full force.

Fortunately, they balance this assault with more musical segments that rely on a multitude of instruments which it appears they have created. These are adaptations of age-old percussion instruments except that they are made from PVC pipe. They have become quite adept at playing these, and in conjunction with the live band they produce some great electric music. So much so, that their debut CD (the soundtrack to the Vegas show) was nominated for a Grammy this past year.

There is more drumming, more neon, more interesting interaction with the audience, and more bizarreness (in a good way), but I’ve held back to not ruin the fun. This is not your typical “sit there and watch someone sing and tell jokes show,” but it isn’t as off-the-wall (no pun intended) as De La Guarda.

If you are mildly adventurous, have your finger on the basics of the pop culture of the past couple of decades, and don’t mind being visually and sonically assaulted to a degree, this is a show you will not only tell your friends about, but want to come back and see again. Like a good movie, I can only imagine all I missed the first time around.

It is an all-ages show, but much of it would be lost on preteens and while containing no language or vile acts, the show might overwhelm children. The Grammy nominated soundtrack is available at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000038A2S/invegascom Click on the Blue Man link to hear free samples — “Rods and Cones” is my personal favorite!

EDITORS NOTE: Not since the “Kids in Vegas” (should you bring them or not) has a topic generated as much controversy. While space doesn’t allow me to print every letter, the ones below are a representative sample regarding the strong feelings on this topic. Because of that, I’m leaving the “Smoking in Casinos” poll up an extra week at http://www.accessvegas.com On another note, a sampling of readers were kind enough to share what activities they do to maximize romance in Las Vegas.LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

I recently read an article on an airplane magazine noting that women enjoy and are more likely to indulge in room service. I’m not singling out women, and when I am tired and don’t want the hassle I enjoy ordering room service myself. But men take note — your lady might appreciate the pampered privacy of a quiet meal with you in your room!

Peppermill is across from Stardust (just up the street a couple hundred yards). It is indeed a special spot that is usually frequented by locals even though it has a Strip location.

Down toward the other end of the Strip, Polo Towers (behind and just down from the Harley Cafe) has a 19’th floor lounge open to the public with a great view after dark (otherwise the sun blinds the view). Not quite the atmosphere or Peppermill, but the view makes up for it. It is truly a local’s secret, as the lounge is rarely crowded. Free and worth checking out. Just head through the strip mall in front of the resort, head in, grab an elevator, and punch the top floor button.

I reviewed Delmonico at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-06-21.htm and agree wholeheartedly. To sum this all up, I think it’s tough NOT to have a romantic time in Las Vegas with so many fun things to do, elegant restaurants, and various vistas.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HOTEL POOLS – Summertime is here, and many of the resorts have some magnificent pool areas to take the sting out of the heat. The R-J just did a great story (with 8 photos online) of many of the top resort pools at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jun-29-Thu-2000/lifestyles/13786135.html

VEGAS ON TV – The History Channel has an hour long special called Las Vegas Hotels this Friday evening. Check local listings for time. A couple of new prime-time TV shows set in Las Vegas debut this fall. “C.S.I” on CBS will be a cop show airing Friday nights before Nash Bridges (which had a great 2-part Vegas season finale) and the WB’s “Nikki” will be about an aspiring showgirl whose husband is trying to become a professional wrestler. (It sounds like a fun show, but I personally put the over/under on that one at about 13 weeks.) Other show pilots are being shot here and full story on all is at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/May-22-Mon-2000/lifestyles/13616137.html

ELVIS – RCA is releasing the three-CD Elvis Presley box set “That’s The Way It Is,” which features 66 live and unreleased tracks, including a full Las Vegas concert from August 1970 that was the subject of the documentary film of the same name. Plus, disc three sports tracks taped during rehearsals for that and other Las Vegas appearances. Full story at http://www.billboard.com/daily/2000/0628_06.asp Even though the release is a few days away, you can order it at discount now from Amazon:

MIRAGE DOLPHIN HABITAT – There is a nice article about marine biologist Julie Wignall from the Mirage Dolphin habitat at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jun-08-Thu-2000/lifestyles/13637798.html It’s a great read for those who want to know about the habitat and it’s background. The habitat is a wonderful place, as well as somewhat of a best kept secret. Our review (with photos) is at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-12-01.htm

SOUTH CAROLINA – has decided to end all video gambling. Full story at http://vh60009.vh6.infi.net/business/docs/video062900.htm To our friends in South Carolina, we want to extend a warm invitation to come to Las Vegas where we continue to give you great deals on room, food, and drink, and much higher percentage payback video poker than virtually any state-run game anywhere.

TEACHING JOBS – We’ve noted here and there that it’s not easy to move here right away and find a great job. Companies prefer to hire people who have shown a dedication to moving and staying here. However, the Clark County (Las Vegas and surrounding) school district is now the 6’th largest in the nation and every year they hire teachers from all over the country. Job info is at http://www.ccsd.net/jobs/jobs.html

FEATURE STORY: Steve Wynn: Running Scared (book review)

While our newsletter appeals to hard-core Vegas visitors wanting to keep up on the latest, our feedback indicates that a number of you have subscribed in anticipation of your very first trip. You might read each week, going “What is all the fuss over this Steve Wynn guy, and who cares”?

Mr. Wynn is the man many feel responsible for inventing the new, high class Las Vegas. He was the brains and the CEO behind the Golden Nugget downtown, then built The Mirage at a time when Las Vegas was a town of cheap buffets, cheap rooms, smoky casinos with low ceilings — much more “Sin City” than it is today.

He has had his share of ups and downs, the latest being the buyout of Mirage Resorts company he built and his latest venture, the purchase of the Desert Inn. The book doesn’t cover the Bellagio era, nor the recent happenings.

Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith set out to write Running Scared: The life and Treacherous Times of Casino King Steve Wynn in 1994, and two lawsuits have resulted. The interesting thing is that the book in nowhere near as damning as one would think would bother the casino mogul, although it doesn’t paint him as a choirboy.

Alleged are friendships and close business relationships with people who are one step away from the mob and / or have had a history of very serious trouble with the police. His temper is chronicled, as well as purported sexual conquests running into the thousands with women ranging from celebrities to keno runners. It is a keen look at what it’s like to be what many consider (at least had up until recently) “the most powerful man in Nevada.”

The downside is that some there isn’t the in-depth analysis of how he pulled off some of his bigger business deals, but more of a “he knew these people that introduced him to these people who financed him” kind of thing. However, those details were probably kept to a minimum to provide an interesting read, and interesting it is. You get a pretty complete feel for how he grew up, developed his charm and ego, and how he is possibly the greatest salesman ever to step foot inside the state.

For those of you who long for stories on the old mob days, the alleged connections to organized crime figures provides quite a backdrop, dating back to the days of his father who ran bingo halls all over the eastern seaboard. If you love to soak up Las Vegas, especially the flash and dash, and hear about how one man took his “over-the-top” vision and made it a reality in everything he built, you’ll enjoy this. From his revamp of the Golden Nugget to the ostentatious Shadow Creek golf course (which had a membership of 1 — Mr. Wynn himself), it is covered.

If you are familiar with him, this book isn’t going to change your mind. Those that love him see it as a terrible account of the man who made Las Vegas what it is, and those who hate what they feel are his many abuses of power and being “above the law” will find plenty to fuel their fire.

Running Scared; The life and Treacherous Times of Casino King Steve Wynn is 330 pages, hardback and sells for $24 — not cheap, but less than 2 1/2 rolls of quarters (in Las Vegas terms). It’s a riveting read that I had trouble putting down, and I’d suggest it as a great way to get hyped on that next long car ride or plane flight here. It is available immediate shipment (24 hours) from Amazon.Com at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1569800391/invegascom

Unfortunately, I don’t have control over expiring or changing links. This

articles). In the future, I am going to try to just use Review-Journal

Spring and fall are prime times here with the great weather (often pool weather while the rest of the country is burning heating oil). When you add in events and conventions, the demand drives up the price. We strongly suggest adding http://www.accessvegas.com/events.htm to your favorites (AOL / WebTV) or bookmarks so you see which days or weeks have less convention traffic.

The tourism areas of Las Vegas (as well as the city in general) are very safe. Casinos have both uniformed and plainclothes security inside and out. Plus, cameras are aimed at virtually every corner of the property, from the front door (including outside) to the back. The general safety precautions you take on any vacation should suit you well here. The only problem I have ever encountered in any tourist areas are the panhandlers downtown, and I just ignore them and keep walking. There is too much security for them to start yelling at you, or get in your face.

I would suggest not walking more than one block from the Fremont St. Experience downtown. Trust me, there is nothing to see outside the very safe casino areas, and once you get a few blocks from the tourist areas, downtown isn’t the most crime free. I also wouldn’t suggest wandering off down side streets on the Strip more than a block or two. While not a high crime area, there is no reason to take chances. The exceptions are generally Convention Center Drive from Stardust to the convention center, Flamingo Rd west to The Rio or east to The Maxim and Ellis Island, and Tropicana east to San Remo and Motel 6.

I’m not saying that everything else is a high crime area, but it’s always safer to stay in the tourist areas where there are lots of people around when in an unfamiliar city.
