PRICE GOUGING – KVBC 3 just completed an undercover investigation and found photo developing shops on the Strip that are charging up to $43.00 per roll for one-hour film developing. Story at http://www.msnbc.com/local/kvbc/7845.asp Even though you are on vacation, you are a customer. Never forget that a store needs YOUR business and ALWAYS ask how much the TOTAL cost for something will be if it isn’t clear. Many tour operators pull the same stunt by not including taxes, airport fees, and more in those glossy ads you see.

Our suggestion for photo developing when on vacation? We bring a bunch of envelopes for those mail-order photo developers with us. http://www.clarkcolor.com is one of many that do this service (not a sponsor, but we use them with no problem regularly). Every couple of rolls, just pop the film in the mail and the finished prints will be delivered a couple days after you get home with no worry about price gouging or losing your photos on the way home.

THE TILLERMAN – Speaking of fine dining in a great atmosphere, The Tillerman is a short cab ride from the Strip and one of the better kept secrets, until now! STUCK AT MCCARRAN? – If your flight home gets delayed, you can go work out your frustrations now instead of dropping your winnings back in the airport slots. 24 Hour Fitness has opened an airport location and will even provide you workout clothes for a reasonable fee. U.S. 93 CLOSURES – if you drive in from Phoenix, New Mexico, Texas or points southeast, note that U.S. 93 is going to be closed for 4 hours at a time intermittently over the next month. FEATURE STORY: THE ROMANTIC LAS VEGAS CHEAPSKATE by Matt WeatherfordI am writing this from the guy’s perspective, but all my romantic
tips apply in reverse, too, meaning you girls can dazzle your boys by
following my brilliant advice.

Guys, one thing I am with the ladies is slick. Before I ensnared my
wife in my viscous love-grip, I could practically charm the pants off
of any woman without spending a dime. Now that I am happily married,
it’s time to open the vaults and reveal the secrets that drove the
ladies wild and kept Andrew Jackson and his buddies in my back pocket.

In Las Vegas, you don’t need to be a millionaire to show your partner
you’re got a heart a big as a Buick. Do it on the cheap, all the
while making it so romantic that your special someone never even
catches on.

THE ROMANTIC LIMO RIDE
A popular fantasy is to cruise slowly down Las Vegas Boulevard at
night in a stretch limousine. The twinkling, spinning lights reflect
off the car as it effortlessly glides in the traffic stream, and we
are tucked away behind the dark windows in our romantic mobile
hideaway. Another part of my fantasy is when the driver says, “You
guys were such great customers that I’m gonna let you have this ride
for free.”

In reality, the driver always wants his $35 an hour for the private
limo ride. And that doesn’t include the tip, which quickly tacks on
another 50 cents! To fulfill the fantasy for less, how about a slow
ride down the Strip aboard public transit? The Citizen Area Transit
Route 301 up the Strip is $2 per person, or $4 if you go the extra
mile and pay for your sweetie too. Just like a limo, the buses have
big windows, professional drivers, and move very slowly. Climb aboard
with your squeeze, fight your way through the mob of other romantic
couples to a pair of hard bench seats and get ready for good lovin’
action. Sure, you’re sharing your limo with 50 other people, it stops
at every intersection to load and unload, and the guy next to you is
drooling, but these are the sorts of minor points that will only be
noticed by a woman not in love.

Be sure to have a six-pack of Schlitz on ice back in the room to seal
the deal, because she’s gonna be itchin’ for kissin’ when the ride is
over. One word of caution: keep your pants on while riding the bus.
We have learned they are very strict about this.

If you want to whack your girl over the head with the fat end of the
charm stick, get her a real limo ride right from the airport. For
less than $5 each, you can ride Las Vegas Limo like you would a
shuttle. The catch is that you won’t be alone. The driver packs
people in and drops people off at their hotels. Guys, I suggest
getting a hotel on the North end of the Strip, so you get a few
minutes of private time after he’s dropped off all the people staying
at nice hotels. Once the last of the other folks gets off, lean over
and smack her on the lips!

THE ROMANTIC EATS
Very few people come up to me and ask, “Matt, I want to take my gal
someplace classy for dinner. Where do you recommend?” But when
someone does, I have an answer.

First off, breakfast is not very romantic, so don’t think you can cut
corners by splitting the $2.49 steak and eggs at Arizona Charlie’s,
or a 99-cent half-pound hot dog at Slots-a-Fun. On the other hand, if
you’ve found yourself a gal who finds these exciting, run to the
nearest pawn shop and buy the cheapest engagement ring they have:
she’s a keeper!

For the lady of more discriminating taste, I recommend the following
sybaritic delights:

The Peppermill Coffee Shop – don’t let its humble appearance fool
you. This small free-standing coffee shop next door to the Riviera is
the sort of place that brought down Gomorrah. Dark velvets, fake,
silver plants, dim lighting and plush booths make this the perfect
place to act out your role-playing fantasies of being a 70s player,
with your lady being a tough-talking hoochie. Want to be a little
decadent? Have the waffles with fruit for dinner. If you order
carefully, you two lovebirds can get out for less than $20. But,
don’t leave before going to the swank-uluxe lounge where a bubbling
cauldron belches fire and the booths provide more privacy than a
modern condominium complex. The drinks are priced right and strong
enough to intoxicate even the most hardened lover.

Center Stage – The food ain’t so hot, but the view is oo-la-la!
Well-hidden on the second floor of the Plaza Hotel downtown, the
Center Stage has a domed dining room that looks straight down Fremont
Street. If you’re smart, you’ll have a few strong $1 dollar cocktails
downstairs to deaden your tastebuds. A complete meal can be had for
about $10 a person, and you get that much value just out of the
number of waiters and servers who hover around. After dinner, why not
head downstairs and enjoy the awfully good acts in the Omaha Lounge.
It’ll give you a chance to let your dinner settle and then see how
vigilantly they enforce their “No Dancing” policy.

Roberta’s – If your honeybun respects food, then why not take the
romantically dangerous after-dark stroll to Roberta’s at the El
Cortez where the savvy man can let his girl stuff her greasy piehole
until she can’t stuff anymore. Plus, Roberta’s respects food. Why
else would they call the 18-ounce steak “Mr. Porterhouse?” Other
specials include “Mr. Crab” and “Se±or Prime Rib.” All can be had
well below their fair market value. A word of warning, gents, the
task of arriving at Roberta’s is not for the squeamish or anyone
easily deterred by bums or stench.

With the right presentation, just about any meal can be romantic, but
not the buffet. Never the buffet. “Why not?” you might be wondering.
You say, “Last time I ate at Circus Circus with my buddies, it seemed
like the perfect oasis for a late night rendezvous.”

Guys, you’re right, the Circus Circus buffet has exactly the sort of
ambience to set the mood for amore. But it’s not the room that will
mess things up; it’s us. Just when everything is going so well, and
her eyes are glazed over with awe, we always end up talking while our
mouth is full of veal, or sucking Jell-o up our nose with a straw, or
gulping down some of those desserts that make you gassy. Let’s face
it: at the buffet, it’s better to pig out and get your money’s worth
than seduce your girls.

THE ROMANTIC VIEW
It’s easy to take a friend to the top of the Stratosphere or Paris’
Eiffel Tower, but those costs $6-$8 per person, and that’s money that
could be better spent on a delightful bottle of ripple with dinner.
Besides, the Eiffel Tower observation deck is covered with chain link
and it brings back too many bad memories of my time in the Louisiana
Correctional Facilities.

I say, keep the cash and take your lady to the top of the Rio’s
Masquerade Village. Although it’s only half the height of the Strat’s
observation deck, it’s free. You and your lady will step out onto the
outdoor deck and scan the entire valley, with a great view of the
casinos you will take her to later for some nickel video poker. If
your special someone asks why you’re not at the Stratosphere, don’t
admit that you’re a cheapskate, just say that it’s too crowded and
too “bourgeois.” That word drives the ladies mad. Or say they had an
outbreak of malaria over there and you care too much to let her get
deathly ill. Now, if that doesn’t make her swoon, she’s got a heart
made of corn-cobs.

The Rio’s elevator is in the Masquerade Village area of the casino.
At night there is a dress code, meaning dress pants and collars, and
pants and shirts like that cost money. Plus, there might be a minimum
number of expensive drinks you have to buy. I suggest you take your
girl during the day and wear really dark sunglasses to simulate the
evening.

Of course, what I have just revealed aren’t all of my secrets. I have
to keep some of the mystery, after all. They should be enough to get
even the lowliest among us cheapskates to see that romance and
pinching pennies aren’t always mutually exclusive. Good luck and good
loving.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

FOUR DIAMOND ROOMS – Las Vegas now has more AAA Four Diamond rooms than any other U.S. city with the addition of Treasure Island to that status. The others are The Mirage, Bellagio, Golden Nugget, Desert Inn, Caesars and the Las Vegas Hilton (all of which we book at http://www.accessvegas.com ). BINION’S STEAK – update: the infamous late night steak is now only served 11 PM to 5 AM Sunday through Thursday night, and they price has been raised to $4.99 As much as I love downtown, unless you are staying downtown skip it and head over to Ellis Island just behind Bally’s at Flamingo and Koval (about a 10 minute walk from Ballys). This local’s casino is newly remodeled, clean, friendly and offers a similar steak special 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for $4.95 (if not on menu, ask for it). Plus, you can sample the microbrews they brew right at the casino. We still do highly recommend the $5.95 prime rib served noon until midnight in the coffee shop of The Plaza hotel downtown. Great meal for the money!

SPEAKING OF GAMBLING – on sports, a number of members of the U.S. Congress have introduced legislation to ban betting on college athletics. Of course, we know that NO betting on amateur athletics EVER happens anywhere outside of Nevada. NEVER. It wasn’t that long ago that Washington quit telling us to drive 65 miles an hour on desert freeway and now this. Obviously, we are less than pleased and while we have no intentions of turning this into a political newsletter, we will follow this and give you the opportunity to write your representatives if you enjoy betting sports here in Las Vegas. WILD WILD WEST – Las Vegas is often thought of the “cowboy west” but few people make it past the neon. Which is too bad, because the desert is a beautiful, fun, calming place. Sandy Valley sits 45 short minutes from Las Vegas along the CA / NV border. It is still pretty much the middle of nowhere and the Sandy Valley Ranch offers trail rides ranging from half-day to overnight. So fuel up before you go!

FEATURE STORY: RIO SEAFOOD BUFFET

$27 for a buffet. No kidding. And that used to be for lunch or dinner until they dropped serving lunch last week. Is it worth it? That depends how much do you like seafood and how much can you eat.

The Rio Seafood Buffet (not to be confused with the regular Carnival World Buffet) is a seafood lovers delight. If it comes out of the ocean, they have some! Varieties of clam dishes, scallops, shrimp, oriental seafood delights, oysters, halibut, and swordfish in lanostino sauce to name a few.

Add in all the you-peel shrimp and crab legs you could eat. Then go get your choice of white fish, mussels, calanari or scallops with your choice of vegetable grilled to order . Got the kids along? Various breaded and fried fish as well as french fries were available. Someone doesn’t like fish? They were carving prime rib, serving BBQ steak and there was a fair amount of pasta, Mexican, and other more traditional buffet fare, all of which was top-notch quality.

The desert? I always judge the quality by the cheesecake, and I couldn’t finish the whole slice. Very good! The service was attentive, and for those so inclined a fairly substantial wine list was available as well as other adult beverages.

So what’s the verdict? When compared to what the same quantity, variety, and quality would cost in a traditional restaurant, you can’t go wrong for the money. Especially when you toss in desert, you couldn’t get this anywhere else for under $30 a head. However, for an upscale dining experience, it was a little too buffet-ish for my tastes. The surroundings were pleasant, but nothing special and no nicer than half of the other buffets in town. The music was a little too uptempo loud. There was a line at the desert bar because they served each person individually.

Unless you just don’t want to leave the Rio or you adore seafood, take the 5 minute ride over to Bellagio which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dinner runs $4 cheaper than the Rio Seafood Buffet and the atmosphere is more upscale, quiet and relaxed. While not having the huge selection of fish, Bellagio features a nice seafood variety, including PEELED shrimp. Plus, their desert bar is comparable but self-serve so you don’t feel like a child at Halloween or have to wait in line. The Rio Seafood buffet is open 4 – 10 PM on weekdays and until 11 PM on weekends. Admission is $27 per person every single day.

The Golden Nugget is the class of downtown. Perhaps not the best gaming rules, but 11 other casinos are within a 5 minute walk if that is important to you.

It’s always tough to suggest hotels for people. We have readers that stay downtown and won’t pay more than $30 a night for a room, and others who won’t come to town if they can’t get the Mirage. Our suggestions also generally take into account that fact that most people prefer to stay on the Strip, although we are certainly fans of Ellis Island.

For those considering getting married in Las Vegas, please understand that these weddings are “in and out” type of deals. It’s almost like an assembly line. MEGAGUCKS – got hit Wednesday night at the Deserted Inn (yes, that is what we call it locally because it’s usually pretty empty). 37 year old Cynthia Jay, a (now former) cocktail waitress at the Monte Carlo, was catching a show that night at the Desert Inn. She had invested $27. The $34,955,489 (paid over 25 years) is the largest slot jackpot ever hit in history. SUPER BOWL – Las Vegas throws quite a few parties during the year, but this is one of the biggest. Some come to drink and let loose, some come to root on the home team because Super Bowl tickets are unobtainable, and other want to recoup everything they lost betting football during the entire year! NO MORE MILLION – Binion’s Horseshoe has undergone many changes since Binion sister Becky Behnen took over, but none compared to the sale of the infamous display of 100 $10,000 bills (a cool million) that her father Benny put together. An estimated 5 million plus people have had their photo taken with it over the years. If you have one, save it — it was your last. There was nothing like enjoying the $3 late night steak special (now no longer available on weekends) and then trooping back up the stairs and spending a few quiet minutes just looking at all that cash. HARD ROCK – Many questioned the off-strip location when it opened, but the Hard Rock has quietly expanded and become one of the top casinos in town. They may cater to the trendy high rollers from out of town, but we personally enjoy the 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker (slot points allowed for play) and the $5.95 surf and turf special in the coffee shop (not on the menu — ask for it). SHOPPING GALORE – Recent reports note that visitors spent more in Las Vegas ($22.5 billion) in 1999 than in New York City and San Francisco combined, and that doesn’t include gaming. Not only are their more gaming opportunities on the Las Vegas Strip than anywhere in the world, but now more shopping opportunities. LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY – is holding it’s annual open house on Feb. 19. from 9 AM to 4 PM. Race fans will be treated to free tours of the entire facility, discounts from the Richard Petty Driving Experience, discounted concessions and merchandise, special ticket deals and go-kart rides courtesy of Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix. There also will be several big-screen televisions set up during the morning hours for fans to watch the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race from Daytona International Speedway. The go-kart rides will begin immediately following the conclusion of the race from Daytona Beach, FL.

FEATURE STORY: Rio Masquerade Village ShowAlthough it’s been playing for the better part of two years, I’ve always seemed to miss the Masquerade Sky show when I visit the Rio. A visit to The Rio for me usually involves a trip straight up to the Voodoo Lounge with friends or to meet a client and just enjoy the spectacular sights from 51 floors up, which is generally regarded as one of the best free view of the city.

So, I braved the 58 degree cloudy, windy day Tuesday and set out to truly experience a little of The Rio. I arrived at 4 PM just in time to see the beach-themed show featuring music from the 50’s and 60’s. After that, it was on to their infamous seafood buffet (review next week) and then up to the Voodoo Lounge to watch the sunset. Then back down at before 6 PM to catch another Masquerade show.

This is a production and a half for free! The multi-level stage at one end of the Masquerade casino area features live musicians as well as a number of dancers, but the entertainment extends the length of the casino with large two-level floats that ride high above the gaming area on rails. The sound is great, the dancers superb, and the floats are ablaze in light and color. In true Mardi Gras fashion, dancers on the various floats tossed out beads to the crowds both below and lined along the second floor.

We enjoyed the first show from the ground in front of the stage, but the best place to really enjoy the floats and dancers on them is from the second floor esplanade which surrounds the casino (it has restaurants and shopping off of it). People start lining up a half hour prior to each show upstairs, but we lucked out and found the perfect viewing area: from downstairs, look across and over from the stage until you find the big Watch Zone sign. Unlike the balcony area just to it’s right (as seen from downstairs), you aren’t fighting for a view or fighting for beads with a throng of other people, but you still have a fantastic view of the stage. Get under the Watch Zone sign upstairs and you are set!

The show runs every two hours from 2 PM to Midnight (dark Wednesdays) and lasts for about 15 minutes. You can purchase a ticket to ride in one of the floats for $9.95 and become part of the show. They dress you in a costume fitting that show’s theme (there are 4 shows altogether). Might be fun, but it looks like you are pretty much belted in and I’m not sure how much you can see.

The Voodoo Lounge is a must see. It occupies one full side of the top of the hotel with about a 270 degree view of the city, including the entire Strip, airport, downtown, and more. It opens at 5 PM and I strongly suggest going early enough to be up there during sunset (which is generally early enough that you won’t fight a line). The view actually faces away from the sunset, but watching the Strip light up as dusk approaches is stunning. The trip to the top is free except for a weekend cover charge later in the evening. Noted local musician Jimmy Hopper and his band play their unique (and very impressive) versions of popular songs Wed. – Sun. nights starting at 9:00 PM. A “dress to impress” code is enforced. No suit and tie required, but wear something besides tennis shoes and have a shirt with a collar at minimum. The more busy it is, the more they appreciate nice dress.

FEATURE STORY: Circus Circus AdventuredomeThe average Las Vegan only gets out to the Strip when guests are in town, and then grudgingly because their friends don’t understand that a resident can’t drink and play $10 a hand blackjack until 5 AM, or drop $100 on a show without any thought.So, next time you hit town and call up your local friends, suggest heading over to The Adventuredome at Circus Circus. It’s the perfect theme park for Las Vegas. The big pink dome is huge, giving it an outdoors feel, but is climate controlled making it perfect on days when we hit those extreme high or low temperatures. Plus, your vacation time is valuable and you can see and do everything in 2-3 hours and be on your way without emptying your wallet.

The centerpiece of the park is the Canyon Blaster rollercoaster. It’s the only indoor double-loop, double corkscrew rollercoaster in the United States. More built for finesse than speed, this doesn’t have that “first big drop” like the one at New York, New York or the 200+ foot drop of the Desperado at Primm. But, it’s a lot of fun twisting and looping and it shakes you up pretty well.

If you feel the need for that plunging burst of speed, the other major ride is the Rim Runner water flume ride. After a fun float around the park, this ends with a splashing drop of over 4 stories! And yes, you are going to get wet. Go on this first so you can spend the next half hour drying out.

If you enjoy a ride that is designed to just really get you sick, The Inventor takes you 50′ in the air while flipping you around 360 degrees. We were content to watch, but people looked like they were having fun.

If action / adventure is more your style, you won’t be left out. A laser tag arena lets you combine forces for a battle in a darkened cavernous area. They have a batting cage or you can enjoy Xtreme Zone, and area with rock climbing and trampoline bungee. If you are an IMAX fan, the “Fun House Express” is a strange and wild clown-themed experience. If you need to get knocked around a little, they have bumper cars as well.

Long time readers know we don’t suggest bringing the younger kids to Las Vegas. There isn’t much for them to do and see, and parents spend their whole vacation thinking how much fun they could have had just as a couple. But if you bring them, the Adventuredome is a must whether they are 5, 10, or 15. The free clown shows at noon, 1:00, 3:00, and 4:00 PM (with hourly shows from 6-9:00 PM on Fri. and Sat. evenings) even put a smile on my face.

The park has the prerequisite carousel as well as a kiddie rollercoaster, “balloon ride” Ferris wheel, junior airplane ride, and swinging pirate ship ride. It’s not unlike the local county fair, except that the Adventuredome is clean, neat, (one would assume) well-maintained, and the people operating the rides don’t look like they spent all night doing drugs instead of doing their laundry. Scattered around the park are arcade games, games of skill (knock the bottles down for a prize, etc.), build your own arts and crafts, face painting, hair braiding, and food.

Single ride tickets are available ($2-5 depending on the ride), but unless you are short on time and just want to hit the coaster, buy an all day pass. It’s only $16.95 for those over 48″ and $12.95 for those 35-48″. You must be 48″ tall to ride the “thrill” rides and 42″ tall for IMAX, laser tag, and the swinging pirate ship. We came about noon on a weekday and experienced no lines.

Adventuredome is located in the rear of Circus Circus, just off their rear parking garage and the new shopping and food area (which is probably the nicest part of a casino that could use a little sprucing up). Hours vary by season, so make a quick call ahead of time to (702) 794-3939 for recorded information.

You didn’t name the name of the hotel, but we assume it was the Maxim because they closed for a few weeks due to bankruptcy. You can’t blame Las Vegas on that one: businesses fail every single day. Not that I don’t sympathize — you dealt with some very unfortunate circumstances.

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

The review is archived online with photos of the dolphins and tigers we took that day at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-12-01.htmáLAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:DUMB AND DUMBER – Top casino executives brushed off the 85% occupancy rate during New Years Eve, noting that this was the first time Las Vegas had experienced worldwide competition for New Years Eve visitors. They sighted additional operation expenses such as the unusually high price of big-name entertainers and (I’m not making this up) linen costs. Mmmmmmmmmm. Funny, you think a hotel would have enough linen on hand all the time, as well as the ability to launder it. It doesn’t seem to be a problem during Comdex (when occupancy rates are higher than 85%).

None of the casinos reported a better-than-expected gaming win that weekend. They forgot that their main business philosophy for 50 years has been value-priced rooms and food so you have some money to gamble with! Unlike other businesses who hire top quality people for the job, casinos are so flush that it’s still very much “who you know”. Hopefully this was a wake-up call.

LAKESHORE DRIVE – A new 2.5 mile section of this road has opened closer to the lake offering fantastic views and pullouts so that you can stop and enjoy them. This is a great little scenic detour on your way to Hoover Dam, as the road to the Dam contain little in the way of lake views. Get a city map before you head out (available at gift shops – they generally contain an expanded view of the metro area which includes the Lake). OSCAR GOODMAN – was the answer to last weeks trivia contest. The former “Mouthpiece for the Mob” is our mayor. The Review-Journal did a fascinating in-depth piece on him last Sunday at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jan-09-Sun-2000/news/12655346.html (Particularly interesting is the accompanying photo of he and Mills Lane looking like they had been hitting the bar).

STEVE WYNN – did it again. The Mirage Resorts CEO is largely credited for the boom in fine dining in Las Vegas, and two of his companies restaurants have earned The 2000 Mobil Travel Guide 5 star ratings. NASCAR – Las Vegas 400 returns to town this year on March 5! Improvements have been made to the sight lines and Las Vegas Blvd. has been widened to help with the traffic congestion. In addition, this year shuttle busses are going to be taking a special route between the Strip and Las Vegas Motor Speedway to move you their much more quickly. Rooms and tickets go quick so check room rates at http://www.accessvegas.com and call the Speedway at (800) 644-4444 to get your tickets now. It’s quite the party weekend in Las Vegas!

MIGHT AS WELL JUMP – The press gets criticized for down playing tragedy that happens here, but it does. A 24-year-old Utah man did the freefall from the top of the Stratosphere last week, and we don’t mean the ride. Later, it was discovered that he was a grocery store manager who left with $15,000 of store cash. One can only speculate what kind of trouble he must have been in to steal that kind of money and come here for a quick hit. SUMMER IS HERE – With the temperatures generally climbing (Memorial Day weekend saw highs close to 100 and lows in the mid-60’s), we can’t stress enough the importance of drinking plenty of water while out there. PRIME TIME LAS VEGAS TV SHOW – The UPN Network (also seen on most cable systems on WGN out of Chicago) has bought 13 weeks of a new TV show called “The Strip”. It will shoot in Las Vegas, and the basic premise will be 2 ex-Metro police officers working as security for the Tropicana hotel and solving crimes, etc. Seems like they had a similar series like that here once …. something with the word VEGA$ in the name …. We wish the new series well and hope it give you all a great weekly shot of your favorite vacation destination.

As many of you may have seen on American TV last, week, “Kaptain” Robbie Knievel successfully set a world record in a “live for television” jump at the Grand Canyon, only to crash once he came off of the end of the landing ramp, breaking a leg and 2 ribs. While no bets were taken, the jump was on many sports book big screens around town.

The craziest thing about this whole event was the fact that just after the landing ramp sat ungraded desert terrain. While the agreement with the local Indian tribe (BLM and National Park Service wanted no part of this) specified upsetting as little of the area as possible, a couple hundred dollars more worth of plywood covering the natural desert would have saved him quite a bit of pain.

Having had to pleasure to see his Las Vegas “Building to Building Death Jump” from one Jockey Club tower to another earlier this year, and then to be present at the after-party at the Hard Rock hotel for Robbie and crew, I can tell you that he and is group are some of the nicest, most down to earth people out there. Of course, when every show could be your last, one is probably more conscious to leave people smiling! The newspaper story (with photos) is available at:

The motorcycle and leather gear from that jump are now on permanent display that the Tropicana Hotel’s Casino Legends Hall of Fame.

Feature Story: The Venetian (continued from last week)

The casino seems small for a property of that size, but it might just be an illusion. This isn’t a casino you are going to get lost in. You don’t feel like you are a rat trapped in a maze. It is not a locals casino, with an emphasis on dollar slots and $5 table minimums on the weekdays. (VP players — 9/6 dollar jacks or better available).

Unlike Mandalay Bay, there is not an overabundance of bars, with only an ornate circular bar toward the center and another one at the sports book. A third is located in La Scena (the lounge area), which showcases top, professional lounge acts from 6:00 PM until 2:00 AM in an upscale upscale atmosphere. Drink prices are in line with other major hotels, running from $2.75 for a domestic bottle to $5.50 and $6.50 for top shelf call drinks. (There may be an entertainment tax surcharge in the lounge — a very common thing here in Las Vegas).

The sportsbook is adequate, but certainly wasn’t built to cater to much more than the hotel guests.

Dining options include an nice food court and a “coffee shop”. The food court has a McDonalds, Subway, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and Baskin Robins … almost. It has generic, slightly upscale version of each with prices running about $2-3 higher than the average above chains. The atmosphere is top notch, with seating facilities more resembling a decent restaurant than a food court. Not a bad place to enjoy a $5 hamburger.

The “coffee shop” is actually a yuppie dining establishment named Grand Lux Cafe, featuring “unique casual global cuisine”. And they aren’t kidding. I’ve seen novels shorter than this menu. Crabcakes to Korean tacos, pastas, chicken, lamb, cajun shrimp, fresh fish provenca, martinis, and significant wine list and much, much more.

The Union — not a lot to say. No picketing, and informal conversation with employees ranging from security to dealers found them quick to volunteer how happy they are with the wages, benefits (that don’t cost them a dime), and the fact that they don’t pay union dues. So, far this has absolutely NOT turned into a “Frontier” type situation.

I’d be remiss without mentioning the cocktail waitresses. (WARNING: Don’t shoot the messenger — I’m just reporting it like it is). Unlike other casinos who were burdened with promoting to their new properties based on seniority, Mr. Adelson took advantage of the fact he was hiring fresh for every position. This includes the cocktail waitresses. On an average swing shift, there is not a waitress who couldn’t walk right out and get a print modeling job. Rumor has it that he “raided” the most attractive ladies from every casino in town. The unique uniforms flatter the ladies in every way, and The Venetian seems to make no apologies for using the waitresses as an integral part of the whole visual feel of the property. They one-upped the Rio.

As mentioned in part one of this article (available at
https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/access-vegas-insider-vibe-may-20-1999/ ), there is indication that Steve Wynn may feel concerned about being upstaged. Mirage Resorts was slated to begin construction on their next mega-resort on the site of the Holiday Inn Boardwalk around 2002. Just this last week, they announced plans to start moving on the project in a much shorter time frame. The official reason is that Las Vegas is absorbing all of the new hotel rooms better than expected, but that’s a stretch considering that the Aladdin and Paris both have yet to come online and The Venetian is just now running at full occupancy.

Bottom line in my opinion? Mr. Wynn’s company has the land and the cash flow and he will not rest until he has the most elegant property in town again. If you want to bet on him, Mirage Resorts stock is publicly traded.
