We are pleased to have a review by our Senior’s Las Vegas Newsletter Editor Ted Sherman as well as a blurb of his on Madame Tussaud’s. This new, free newsletter launched with almost 1500 subscribers last week and that count is growing steadily! If you are 55+ or just enjoy Las Vegas and good writing, check out the premiere issue. Featured Story: Mama Mia!

By Ted Sherman

What do you get when you put on a Broadway-style musical that features a hotel in Greece owned by an American woman, whose daughter’s father 21 years ago could have been one of three of the single mamma’s lovers, one each British, Australian and American? Did I mention that the play’s title is Italian, and the music is from the popular 1970s Swedish group, ABBA, (Dancing Queen, Thank You For The Music, etc.)?What you get from that mix is Mamma Mia, a fantastically popular show that currently plays to packed audiences at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

My daughter and I recently attended a performance. She’s a young TV comedy writer, and we sat down later to compare intergenerational opinions. Before the curtain rose, I feared that my stage musical preferences, except maybe for Cats and Les Miserables, had ended in the 1960s, when Rogers and Hammerstein broke up.

My daughter recently spent five years in NYC, living just a short hike from the theater district. In addition to being an expert on the current entertainment scene, she knows Broadway history. At age three, she had already memorized the entire scores of Bye, Bye Birdie, Oliver, Mame, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and other shows of the era.

My opinion is that Mamma Mia started slowly as the basic story was explained. Then after several quiet love songs, it exploded into highly-entertaining, toe-tapping musical numbers. Sorry, Oscar and Richard, but I believe the guys and gals who put this show together and performed it are every bit as original and entertaining as your creations.

My expert daughter patiently explained to her dad that the first 15 minutes were intentionally expository (All right, I said slow) so that the audience would understand the very complex relationships among the single mother, her daughter and the three maybe dads. We both agreed that once the lively dancing and singing numbers took over, we were totally entranced. Final father-daughter opinion: Go grABBA cab, plane, auto or bus, and wind your way to Mandalay Bay without delay to see Mamma Mia!

Mama Mia! Las Vegas: Show Times and Reservations

Now That’s a Waxy Build-UpMadame Tussaud’s London-based Wax Museum just announced it’ll soon display a replica of teen singer/rocker Britney Spears. Unlike non-moving images of such famed female celebrities as Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Di and Margaret Thatcher, Britney’s wax figure will feature inflated breasts (chest breathing) that vibrate to an accompanying sound track.Although it may be some time before a wax copy of Britney’s animated anatomy arrives here, check out Madame Tussaud’s everyday exhibit at the Venetian on your next Vegas visit.

Bring your camera, because you’ll have a ball shooting cheek-to-cheek pix with the waxy likenesses of Sinatra, Elvis, Streisand, Newton, Whoopie and many others.

Message Board Members – Very, very important: The old board (and posts) are gone because they didn’t mesh with our new comprehensive member community. Sorry but no way to save them so we are starting from scratch. That also means all user names are up for grabs, so go to the registration area and register the user name you want ASAP!

This will let you start posting to the new message boards and as well as play our new free games. Anyone signing up this week will get 1000 credits to play with (instead of the usual 200 new users get). Next week, we’ll tell you how to earn more credits (hint: visiting certain parts of our site, participating in the forums) and will soon be awarding weekly and monthly prizes to those with the most credits gained!

Note: The user name will also become username@accessvegas.com if you choose to use our new free email service (coming soon).

Splash Quick Show Info: Our Full Review, Show Tickets, Free Streaming Video (Dial-Up Broadband)

When was the last time you saw a “Vegas Show”? No … not just any show in Las Vegas, or some “Vegas Style Review” when you were at the beach or an Indian casino. I mean a true Las Vegas show with beautiful topless showgirls, singers, dancers, and specialty acts where you get some serious bang for your buck. And at a price tag that won’t bleed your wallet dry when some Las Vegas show ticket prices are spiraling.

Splash is that show. Although around since 1985, Splash has successfully revamped itself every few years and the latest version is possibly the best yet.

For the intro, singers, showgirls and dancers perform high-energy numbers with choreographed dance ranging from street to jazz to classical. And there isn’t a bad seat in the house as the showgirls parade out through the audience and back. Read More …

Featured Story: Ted Sherman’s Las Vegas Thoughts

Cabbie Savvy – Many senior visitors gripe about Vegas taxis. Some cabbies use the long way from the airport to Strip hotels. They take the airport tunnel to I-15, and 20 long minutes later arrive at the hotel. The cabbies may tell you it avoids heavy street traffic, but instead of a $10 fare through non-highway streets, the cost can be $20+.So, when you hop a taxi at the airport, just say, “Hey, don’t use the tunnel”. Also be aware that the extra fee added to your bill is for leaving the airport into Vegas. Don’t be charged an extra fee for returning to the airport for departure.

Vegas cabbies don’t look forward to later this year. New links in the city’s monorail system will connect MGM to many hotels four miles along the Strip to the Sahara. As if taxi guys don’t have enough to worry about, there’s talk of extending the monorail to the airport.

Remember When – Dick Smothers recalls his first Las Vegas job with brother Tom…would you believe…40 years ago! Then in their early 20s, and having only performed for high school and college audiences, the Smothers Brothers weren’t sure their material was sophisticated enough for Las Vegas. They were the opening act for star Juliet Prowse at the Flamingo, and were an instant hit. To this day, after decades of award-winning TV and live performance success, they’ve never had to change their off-the-wall concepts of comedy and music.

Dick says knew he had become a star when Frank Sinatra introduced him to the audience during Frank’s performance at Caesar’s Palace. The Smothers Brothers, popular as ever, star at the Las Vegas Hilton May 6 through June 1, August 26 through September 14, and October 28 through November 16. Hello from Las Vegas! We visited the Crazy Girls show last week. We haven’t seen it since comedian Joe Trammel took over hosting duties. The show dancers are now even a more risquÚ. Plus, Trammel spoofs everthing from Richard Simmons to Lord Of The Dance and his quick-paced comedy was great.

Crazy Girls is a must for “guys night out” but still plenty sensual enough for couples. The night we went, couples made up the bulk of the audience, including one who had been married for over 50 years! Talk about keeping spice in the marriage! Featured Review: Hypnolarious Starring Terry Stokes

Hypnotist shows conjure up all kinds of ideas, especially to those who have never attended one. Am I going to be put under a crazy trance? Are people going to take their clothes off? Is this some kind of mystic seance?

Put those crazy notions aside and get ready to laugh and laugh and laugh when you go see Hypnolarious starring Terry Stokes. Yes, Stokes is a premier hypnotist but more importantly he is a funny guy. He’s a true entertainer. You’ll leave having enjoyed yourself.

Like other hypnotist shows, volunteers are chosen from the audience. Before being hypnotized, Stokes tells them that after the show they will find their clothes neatly folded by the side of the stage after the show (just a joke, this show is PG-13 but no one gets naked). Read More …

Splash – We went and saw Splash at The Riviera Sunday night. First time back to see the show in about 2.5 years. Back then, I thought there was room for improvement. I’m wondering if anyone has been to see “Spirit of the Dance “while they were staying in Las Vegas. My wife loved “Riverdance”. I’m thinking she might enjoy this, hopefully it’s not too similar. We’re staying downtown and this might be a good way to take a short break in the action. The last week of April can’t get here quick enough.

I must confess I have yet to see Spirit Of The Dance. Readers … he and his wife are headed here soon. If you have seen it, give us all the scoop in our Spirit Of The Dance forum.

My husband & I will be on holiday from Scotland in July ’03. and we can hardly wait! The anticipation is all the more ’cause we were in Vegas last July ’02 and had a ball! We saw as much as we could pack into the time we had, but really just concentrated on the ‘strip’. This time we are coming for 12 days and intend to hire a car for 3/4 days, and try and see a bit more outside Vegas. Does anyone have any suggestions on where is really interesting and ‘different’ from what we can visit here in Scotland. We would be prepared to stay overnight somewhere if needed.

One of my favorite things to do when I need to relax and clear my head is just take a drive in the desert. Out to Lake Mead, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, you name it! If driving, let me strongly suggest the Travelog series Travelog Hoover Dam / Valley of Fire and Travelog Red Rock Canyon. These are guided driving tours on tape and CD (comes with both). They are very accurate and helpful — I have both!

We also have links to much of the above information on our Sightseeing And Outdoor Recreation page. If you get away from the neon to explore the natural wonders of our area, what are your favorites and what tips do you have? Share them in our Places Of Interest forum. Help our friends from Scotland (and everyone else) enjoy their trip even more!

Has anyone been playing 3 card poker and if so where are you having the most luck at? I am going to be in Vegas 4/22-4/26 and can’t wait to hit the tables. We are staying at Harrah’s. Hope the weather is nice that time of year…..

We just had a couple days of rain but the long range forecast says mostly sunny with highs around 80. I confess I’m not a poker player so we need reader help on this one. If you play poker in Las Vegas, help them out in the Three Card Poker thread of our forums. Also, we just opened up a new poker forum on the boards. Go to the Message Boards main menu, scroll down to Gambling, and Poker is there. Poker players, post away!

Just got back from Vegas, spent a few nights at Treasure Island, and REALLY enjoyed it. It was our honeymoon, and for no extra charge they upgraded us to the penthouse overlooking the strip (small tip at the check in counter certainly didn’t hurt!), and threw in champagne. Found the dealers very friendly, and the place is just a nice combination of class and low key fun.

What a great story, and sounds like a great honeymoon! For those wondering about the “check-in counter tip”, Check out our Las Vegas tipping guide. Have you stayed at Treasure Island or are thinking about it? Join the Treasure Island discussion in our forums.

How many people use Limousines as their mode of transportation in Vegas? I plan on using Las Vegas Limousines when I attend Vegas. Thanks in advance!

Living here, I end up in a limo from time to time, but usually because someone I know or was hanging out with had one at their disposal. So I’m not really qualified to talk about renting them. Readers, did you rent a limo for that special occasion in town or use one instead of grabbing a cab at the airport? Fill us in at our Limousine forum. You can book one in advance and check rates online at our Limo Search.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! The weather has been incredible, with highs in the low 80’s. Enjoyed watching some of the snow and rain on TV, but glad it isn’t here. Spring is in Las Vegas!

Travel 101 – Every few weeks, someone writes and say “I try to get your deals and it always gives me a higher price than you put in the newsletter.”

In the travel industry, prices are listed “From $$$.” For example, Travelocity.com has a “Las Vegas From $25” commercial running on TV (where they say to check elsewhere, you’ll be back). If you are willing to travel on off days, no weekends, and stay downtown Las Vegas somewhere, you might get the rate they advertise. A search for May 4-7 Las Vegas on Travelocity.com found no rates lower than $39.95, and this was the weekday.

Travel prices are subject to demand. Travel during peak periods costs more. We have a How To Get The Best Las Vegas Room Rates page that explains steps you can take to get the lowest rates. Hope it helps!

Featured Review: Zeffirino Italian At The Venetian

By John Guinivere and Marianna Jones – ChefLive.Com

The staff who tend to the day to day operations of “Zeffirino”, inside the Venetian Hotel, located on the famous Las Vegas strip, invited a few of us to dinner as their guests. Downstairs, where the bar is situated, we began our evening with a cocktail. The bar is very intimate and has almost a cathedral ambiance. It was the perfect setting to relax, people watch and prepare for our wonderful dinner upstairs in the dining room.

Zeffirino is not just another restaurant in Las Vegas. It has a history that extends back to 1939, originating in Italy. The first Zeffirino is still known as the best restaurant in Genoa and was founded by Paolo Belloni. With BellioniÆs vision and Confucio BelloniÆs guidance, Zeffirino opened as a small pub, in a small fishing village in Genoa and through the years has become one of the most famous restaurants of the region.

It is not the food alone that makes a great restaurant. It is the people who cook, serve and greet the customer as well. The evening we went for dinner, we had the opportunity to take the time to sit down and talk with some of the individuals who keep Zeffirino ticking like a well oiled clock. I had one of my best dining experiences ever, listening to the stories and the rich history about the restaurant and the past careers of those who enable Zeffirino and itÆs traditions to continue. Recently, my spouse and I have experienced the excitement of penny slots. It just seems like it is more fun to win 7500 credits on a penny machine than to win 300 credits on a quarter machine even though you’re winning the same amount in either case. We’re planning a trip to Vegas in the near future and plan to do a lot of casino-hopping. Can anyone tell us where to find penny slots? Who has the most? Where you’ve had the best luck?

Penny slots are getting very popular, especially now with the “ticket in, ticket out” technology so you don’t have to scoop up your winnings in pennies. We know many of you enjoy them when you hit town! Which machines are your favorites? Do you play a few coins at a time, or do you play the machine loaded?á Tell us about it in our Penny Slots forum.

Meg from Northern California wrote:

I have enjoyed reading your news letter for over a year now. I travel to Vegas once or twice a year and and your newsletter has been a big help in “seeing the town.” I recently had a very unpleasant experience with a cab driver who went the long way to my hotel. I guess he thought I was a rookie to Vegas. When I asked him why we was taking me on this route, he told me the other road was under construction. WRONG! I was pretty upset and told him he ate up his tip. What I didn’t do was get his name and the taxi company’s name. I will never make that mistake again.

On my return to the airport, I had a great cabbie and told him what happened on my arrival. No, the road wasn’t under construction and yes, I did get taken. Unfortunately, I read about taxi rip offs in your newsletter AFTER I returned. At least I’ll be aware in the future. Thanks for covering that subject. At least I’m not the only one who got suckered.

We bring this up from time-to-time because cab drivers are notorious for “long hauling” riders. All the while, they pretend to be friendly and helpful, trying to sell you tickets to a Strip Club or other show that they are getting a healthy kick-back for.

I’m not saying that all cab drivers are bad, but it doesn’t hurt to beware. If they take you through the airport tunnel (without informing or asking you), they are taking you the long way. The Strip is north of the airport. The tunnel heads south!

We have a complete page on Getting Around In Las Vegas that includes information on cabs and other forms of transportation. If you feel you were “long hauled” or experience any other problem with a cab driver, just quietly note the cab company and car number and (if you can) their name on the drivers certificate posted in the cab. Do not call the cab company. Like they care!

Call the Taxicab Authority at (702) 486-6532. They do keep records, and can suspend drivers with repeated complaints. Don’t feel bad! Your call alone won’t cause a driver hardship. If a number of complaints develops against a driver, they need to be weeded out. We want you to have a great time in Las Vegas!

Message Board Member “Scott ” wrote a great trip report about his December visit. Talked about his flight, cab ride, gambling, drinking and just having a good time at Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Rio Suites, Luxor, Bellagio, Caesars, and more. This is a great read whether you are getting ready for your next trip, or missing the Las Vegas experience.

Check out his Dec. 14-16 Trip Report. And don’t forget to contribute your own trip report or thoughts on your trip when you return. It is a great way to relive the fun and excitement as well as helping others plan for their trip!

I have been travelling to Vegas for years, and have enjoyed fishing the parks near the Strip stocked with trout. This year though I have the time to extend further out, maybe to Lake Mead or the Colorado river. Any advice, or links to finding fishing info would be greatly appreciated (trip is late February!)

Unfortunately, our backlog prevented us from asking before Laree came to town, but if you fish this area, step up to the plate and help your fellow anglers out with some basic (or advanced) info about fishing in Las Vegas in our Any Fishermen In Vegas forum.

This is a good time to emphasize that our forums let you pick a “screen name” so you can be anonymous. If someone emails you from your forum profile, it goes through our machine. Your actual email is never revealed to someone unless you write them back and tell them.

We do not have any association with these clubs, but if you have advice for “bill67” feel free to respond to his post in the Adult Swing Clubs forum. Please post and/or contact someone through their profile. Our forums are great for sharing info, but we will draw the line at personal ads.

I saw Thunder From Down Under last October and they were fabulous!! It’s a very interactive show – so the shy ladies should sit way in the back!!!! The show is funny, sexy and exciting. Some of the best looking men I’ve seen in a long time!! Saw the Chippendales many years ago…I much prefer Thunder. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Also, plenty of opportunity to meet the men…

In my 10 years here, the biggest (and possibly best) change I have seen is more women enjoying Las Vegas! It used to be rare to see groups of women out and about, having fun, cutting loose, maybe having a couple too many cocktails but the tide has turned. “Girls Night Out” vacation now means Las Vegas!

Two popular shows are Thunder From Down Under and Chippendales The Show. If you have seen either one, or want to know what others are saying, check out our For The Ladies (Male Revues) forum.

Besides, why would anyone do anything to Las Vegas? We are the center of … just about nothing. No major media. No important financial centers. Not a huge population center. Many would figure that “evil Sin City” got what it had coming and wouldn’t care! And terrorism is about making people care.

Featured Story: Foreign Travel? Who Needs It When You Have Vegas, Baby!

Tired of war news and growing anti-US ranting overseas? Want to avoid outrageous prices, terrorism, 12-hour flights, customs hassles and interminable international airport security delays?Try Las Vegas as an all-inclusive alternative to taking your hard-earned US bucks through unfriendly skies to hostile foreign destinations. But if you still want a taste of world travel without leaving the good, old USA, you can do it all in just one city.

Paris – Do you need the original’s lousy attitudes, poor service, bad sanitation and smoke-filled, overpriced cafes and hotels? If you still remember when France was our friend, and you’d like to relive those memories, go to Paris Las Vegas.

This glitzy Gallic resort outshines the grungy French original in every way. It has great facilities, superb restaurants, a fake Eiffel Tower and a faux Arc di Triumphe. It isn’t the real Paris, but will you really miss the pervasive Parisian pretensions, pickpockets, pollution, paranoia and pigeon poop?

Italy – The attitude in Italy is a bit less obnoxious than in France, but its dirty, graffiti-smeared cities teem with sleazy characters always on the prowl to mug, hustle and hassle American tourists, particularly seniors. For a more enjoyable taste of Italy, try Las Vegas’ three magnificently phony palazzos.

  • Visit the glitzy Venetian, where instead of boating on the real Venice’s smelly, polluted canals, you can ride gondolas through clean waterways to within steps of exclusive shops and casinos.
  • Bellagio has exquisite Italian decor throughout, topped off with authentically faux Renaissance ceiling paintings. The resort has the best in Continental dining, and enough Italian marble to make Michelangelo drop his chisel and try his fortune at the tables.
  • And for ultimate Italian ambiance as experienced by Francis Albert Sinatra, Dino Crocetti and Anthony DiBenedetto, visit that venerable Vegas landmark, Caesars Palace. Where else can you slurp gelatto while watching a mechanical Bacchus and other plaster gods extol the virtues of wine, gambling and shopping in Caesars Forum Shops?

The Caribbean: Everyone knows the natives of these islands were oppressed and exploited for centuries by Europeans. But, hey guys, enough already! Your economy depends on tourism, so stop scaring away US tourists with angry discourtesy, frequent strikes, heavy street crime and political posturing.

For a more tranquil, no-attitude Caribbean vacation, try basking on the pristine imitation beaches and glitzy ambiance at the super-luxurious Mandalay Bay Resort.Gimme Shelter – With war and terrorism on everyone’s mind, here’s some emergency advice for Vegas visitors and residents. In case of enemy attack, everyone is urged to rush to The Bellagio (home to what some think are the world’s tightest machines) and just crawl under the slots. Those machines will never be hit! (Aw, just kidding!)

Featured Review: Coyote Ugly

Coyote Ugly is a southern style bar and dance saloon featuring hot female bartenders who have elevated pouring drinks to an art form. Like its New York City namesake, each night, sexy, sassy, tough talking Coyote Ugly bartenders ascend atop the bar to perform a bold show filled with stunts ranging from fire-blowing to body shots, clogging and choreographed dance numbers, all while inviting customer interaction.Coyote Ugly boasts some of the wildest bartenders and sexiest barkeep this side of the Mississippi. The “Coyotes” were selected in an arduous competition of 150 finalists for the coveted bartender positions. Most of the “Coyotes” had professional dancing experience before joining Coyote Ugly with experience ranging from Las Vegas production shows to cheerleading for professional sports teams. There is even a former Rockette on the payroll.

Coyote Ugly’s southern Americana decor invites its guests to check their inhibitions at the door, kick back and relax. Dark, trendy martini bars with VIP couches and private corners have filled the Las Vegas landscape, the aim of Coyote Ugly’s design is to knock that trend down a notch in an atmosphere that makes the guests part of one big party.

Like the New York City original, Coyote Ugly Las Vegas is designed to look like a southern bar that has endured years of partying, entrenched with southern flea market treasures and dark worn wood. There is ample room for dancing on the bar, where even the most reserved guests are invited to showcase their talents and leave their undergarments behind for the “Bra Wall of Fame.”

Featured Tour: Area 51 – Top Secret (SUV)

Area 51 – Top Secret (SUV) – This tour takes us to an incredibly remote part of the Nevada desert. It is awesome just to realize how much trouble the government went to, to stay away from the prying eyes of the public. This tour starts with a stop in a vast gorge where UFO sightings have occurred directly over the highway. Our second stop is at the rim of a beautiful canyon where more sightings have taken place. This is an unmarked road that goes to one place only, the Top secret location of Area 51.

Additional Tours Including Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, City, Scenic, National Parks, and Adventure

Featured Golf Course:
Las Vegas National

Las Vegas National – An oasis in the desert, this course hosted PGA and LPGA Tour Events including the Tournament of Champions and the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational. Its well-bunkered greens and lush fairways are protected by palm, pine, and olive trees. Electronic yardage provided in cars.

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Megabucks Will Be World Record – Nevada Megabucks is currently at $34,955,600 and will continue to increase until someone wins it. That lucky person will also become part of history in the next edition of The Guinness Book of Records. Read More …

Fire Safety – In light of the tragic Rhode Island fire, many wonder how safe entertainment activities are. Especially in Las Vegas where many production shows use pyro and so many concerts and events roll through town. Clark County (Las Vegas) has 35 inspectors handling the roughly 200 special events that apply for the use of pyrotechnics. Paperwork is filled out weeks in advance and inspectors preview all effects. The depth of the staff insures that someone is on hand no matter what time of day an event happens.

Boogity, Boogity, Boogity – NASCAR’s UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 invades the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend and the event has been sold out for weeks. No ticket? Stuck home? Note the 11:30 AM Pacific start time and tune to your local Fox station. The best way to get to the race? Take the Cat Ride Race Shuttle (run by our local public bus service). This is the only way to go, as these busses use special routes that get you to the speedway in 45 minutes. I’m rooting for home-town boy #97 but the #2 is a sentimental favorite.

Rio Abrupt Cocktail Change – When the Rio opened, it was famous for beautiful, young cocktail waitresses in outfits that weren’t much more than a one-piece thong swimsuit. Now they are scrapping the entire cocktail staff to hire drink servers who will perform singing and dancing choreographed routines throughout the gaming area.

Some feel this is a way to get rid of cocktail waitresses who may not look at good in the skimpy outfits as they did a decade ago. Others see it as part of a bigger world-wide resort trend toward performing bartenders and waitresses. You can read The Rio’s press release and let us know what you think in our Rio Replaces Cocktail Servers forum. Think this will fly? Sound like a good change or will you miss the current waitresses? Let us know!

Ticket Advice – We often get asked how to get tickets to the very popular shows like “O”, Mystere, Siegfried and Roy, Blue Man Group, and Danny Gans. Yes we have them (at face value). Yes, they go very quickly. The key is to buy well in advance, but keep this in mind: some tickets are not released for sale more than three months ahead.

Our advice? Once your travel dates are set in stone, visit our Las Vegas Shows page and check availability. If that hard-to-get show has tickets available, buy them. If not available yet, keep checking back every few days and specifically 85-90 days before your visit. Most Las Vegas shows are now reserved seating, so even if you aren’t trying for a tough ticket, buying in advance often insures better seats.

Cook E. Ain’t No Rookie – Infamous club and lounge performer Cook E. Jarr is back at his Harrah’s Carnival Court gig midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Cook’s 30’th birthday is probably a couple decades behind him, but his audience keeps getting younger. We were at the outdoor venue Friday night as he played to a packed bar area and ripped through both “old school” and recent dance and R & B favorites in his inimitable style.

The dance floor was packed and while the crowd skews younger, no age group is out of place. With the weather warming up, Cook E. Jarr is a party worth checking out. Plus, the Carnival Court bartenders are some of the better “flair” bartenders around. Check out our Cook E. Jarr Carnival Court photo section.

$5000 Palms Bingo Cash Giveaway – The Key West room at the Palms Resort offers bingo every Thursday: March 6,13, 20 and 27. Session times are 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Palms bingo players will receive an entry at each March session to win part of a $5,000 cash giveaway. The drawings for the $5,000 cash giveaway will be held at every session on Thursday, March 27, yielding 28 lucky winners. Read More …

Featured Review: Dirk Arthur: The New Art of Magic

If Dirk Arthur’s name rings a bell, you may have seen the Bally’s Marquee over the past decade. Dirk was a featured act in Jubilee! and had his name in lights on the Las Vegas Strip. I’d seen him in the show, and he is good. His move to headlining status at The Silverton left people wondering if he could carry a show by himself and others wondering where The Silverton was!In an era with more shows than ever, trying their luck in just about every location and hotel you can try a show, it appears that Arthur’s gamble paid off. The Silverton’s showroom isn’t a converted lounge, but a full-sized, comfortable venue holding perhaps 400-500 people (my guess) and Dirk is filling it up on a consistent basis.

The show is aptly named The New Art Of Magic because Dirk’s specialties are huge scale illusions, the kind you often see with Lance Burton or David Copperfield. He levitates a Lamborghini and makes it vanish in mid-air. He puts a twist on the “saw the lady in half” by cutting her into nine pieces. He has an industrial size drill pierce right through him. And he makes white tigers vanish and switch places. Read More …
