Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! As usual, both the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street were jammed over Memorial Day weekend. The cool weather (partly cloudy, mild temps) keep the mood slightly more subdued than usual but hey… 70 degrees (F)á beats the 108 we had the week before!

A big congratulations goes to Mac King for being named the top Comedy Magician in the world according to Magic Magazine (April 2008 issue). I have the actual issue and was very impressed that this wasn’t just some “award” but a careful, scientific, peer-chosen determination.

He actually beat out both Penn and Teller and The Amazing Johnathan, two names which have had far greater media exposure. Plus, the price is right. Mac King is an afternoon show that will be both easy on your wallet and get you our of our pending summer heat.

Tickets for Las Vegas’ top comedy magic shows:

Las Vegas Rio Sky ShowThe new Rio “Show in the Sky” has just (and I mean JUST) launched. We haven’t even had time to pop over and see it, but the press stuff they sent out notes it is much more sexy and sensual, including three different shows:

With three different shows, guests are encouraged to stay a while for an all new experience to see a unique show each time. The bedroom style performance will feature a 17 foot-long bed with high-energy performers of seduction. The bath/spa style performance will encompass a glamorous stage with sexy girls in towels. The modern-day club performance brings the feeling of old Hollywood glamour meets classic burlesque with accents of rhinestones and feathers throughout.

Shows play nightly on the hour from 7 PM to Midnight.

Las Vegas Second Most Digital Savvy – I never thought I’d see this day, but Las Vegas recently ranked second (behind Austin, TX) as the nation’s most digitally savvy city. This is a huge turn-around. When I launched AccessVegas.com in 1997 (and the predecessor two years earlier) as strictly online publications, casinos didn’t have websites and it seemed rare to find someone in upper management who knew what the internet was.

The Scarborough Research study cited the relatively young average age of residents, median household income of $53,000, higher tech penetration of warm, Western (US) cities, and the transient nature of the residents. This makes sense as people in their 20’s and early 30’s move here thinking they’ll have some fun, make some cash, then move back home (or move on to Southern California, Phoenix, or San Francisco). More of this story available here: Digital Savvy In Sin City

On the party front…

Dick’s last resort is brewing up beer pong, putting a silly spin on this infamous drinking game. They note:

DickÆs Last Resort invites you to test your skills at Bar Pong, the restaurantÆs very own rowdy rendition of the popular past time that is beer pong. With DickÆs entertainer extraordinaire Taco acting as the rambunctious referee, the game has never been this fun.

A touch of truth or dare is tossed in to add a twist as missed shots result in kooky challenges that will have everyone laughing. Whether flying solo or with friends, pick one of DickÆs 18 draft beers and join in the everlasting excitement where everyone is a winner.

Where: DickÆs Last Resort at Excalibur. When: 7 pm û Late, Wednesday û Sunday.

June 5 brings another edition of “Cinco de Taco” at the Pink Taco inside the Hard Rock Hotel offering $2 Coronas and Corona Lights, $3 Sauza Hornitos shots, $3.75 Sauza Hornitos margaritas as well as half-off appetizers from 4 p.m. until closing. “Cinco de Taco” features a live Mariachi band beginning at 6 p.m., and girls dressed in lingerie will be participating in three unique Pinata bashings filled with Love Jones lingerie. Click the above photo for previous “Cinco de Taco” photos.

Take a Plunge Into The Mystical World Of Cirque du Soleil’s Mystere

by Denise Almas

The circus is coming. The circus is coming! Don’t be late or you may find yourself following an unconventional looking clown instead of an usher to your seat — or perhaps someone else’s seat. Thus begins the stunning and surrealistic Cirque du Soleil production of Mystere. As soon as the doors close, the ringmaster takes over and the true action begins with a baby playing ball and looking for his “papa”. After finding a “papa” in the audience, the story begins to unfold in a vibrant and visually stimulating performance.

With the exit of the ringmaster, the performers come alive with unusual costumes, dancing, and death defying acts that only highly trained professionals could deliver with poise, grace, and beauty. As music heightens the performances, these athletes fly through the air, balance on top of each other, and bring to life the mysteries of human emotion and capabilities. Without missing a beat, these international athletes perform feats such as the aerial high bar, bungee, and Chinese Poles.

Elton John Songs Improve With Time In Red Piano

by Lincoln Hudson

Stepping out onto the stage at Caesars Palace one can only gasp at the enormous enigma that Sir Elton John has become. Clearly older and wiser this superb and universal entertainer has lost none of the talent and passion that makes him easily one of the worlds greatest performers.

Red Piano is a magnificent show that beautifully uses the technology of both multi-media and film to tell the story and sub text of his songs. Elton John is not just a talented rock star but he is also quite clearly an Artist whose talent also includes writing hit musicals and adapting opera’s. Most amazing of all I find is the forever deepening sub text of his songs that go back almost thirty years.

Gambling Talk: The King and I Part Two – with Victor H. Royer. Neither Lady M nor the King ever had to worry about announcing themselves, or about reservations. They just showed up whenever they felt like it. In this case, the King had a problem with Lady M, and so the casino thought they had a problem. But the King was very well adjusted. He wasnÆt fretting about it. He simply did whatever it was that he did in his suite, and when Lady M finally left, he came down to play his machines.á

Me being there must have, at first, seemed like it was going to be another problem for everybody, but the KingÆs graciousness and understanding resolved the situation and rendered a potential problem totally moot. I was actually quite impressed by him, the way he acted, and his royal persona. Click to Read Complete Article…

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Just reading your news letter and especially the part about the planes. This bit made me smile: “However, many of you are flying 12-16 hours to get here and that commitment to come visit isn’t lost on us either.”á

Not lost on you but for many of us Brits who used to come over regularly ( I came at least once a year ) we’ve decided that enough is enough and we are no longer prepared to queue for two hours or more once we get off the plane at Chicago or Atlanta or Washington, as we crawl towards the Immigration desk where we are finger printed and photographed.á

12 hours on a plane, then two hours to pass thru Chicago. Normally you miss your connecting flight to Vegas and then have to kill another 3 or 4 hours before making the next 3 hour leg of the journey.

I tried going direct last time ( not a lot of cheap direct flights for those of us living in the North of England ) and the wait to pass thru Immigration at McCarran was nearly two hours as well. I love Vegas but I just can’t do the immigration- Homeland security bit any more.

Regards,

Dave Kendall

Ted Responds:

I appreciate the note and understand the hassle. We call the TSA here the Transportation Screw-Up Administration. And something should be done to speed up the immigration lines here, especially with the number of international flights.

May I suggest sending the same note you sent me to our local paper as a letter to the editor? They have even an bigger voice than I do (politicians generally don’t read tourism publications like ours, but they read the newspaper). You can even submit it online at
http://www.reviewjournal.com/about/print/press/letterstoeditor.html

In fact, I suggest all of our international readers frustrated about this to spend just a couple of minutes doing so. A barrage of complaints will have to be noticed by our newspaper and it might even create extra coverage (or a feature story) that the politicians can’t ignore.

My husband and I have been coming to Vegas for the past 15 years and if you can believe it our latest trip in April/08 is the first time we have been to Fremont Street and we fell in love with it.

My questions is this-is Fremont Street a safe place to stay for a few days at one of their hotel/casinos? This concern for safety has been the reason we have never ventured downtown before now but we spent 3 days of our trip playing/eating/shopping/enjoying the shows during our latest visit and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Keep up all the wonderful work you all on the newsletter, we look forward to it and have learned so much from it. Thanks so much,

Wayne and Sandy M.
Rochester, NH

Ted Responds:

Downtown is as safe as The Strip provided you stay in the tourism areas. But one should never wander off (on foot) well away from normal tourism areas anywhere unless they specifically know the area. The upside of downtown is the more reasonable priced rooms, food, and entertainment. Also, the casinos are all right next to each other. No long walks when you want to change scenery.

The downside is the bus or cab right to The Strip. What many do is buy an all day pass on The Deuce (bus running from downtown to The Strip every few minutes, 24/7). For those looking at the price of airfare and Strip hotel rooms and cringing but still really wanting to come visit, I suggest this: Stay downtown where you’ll still find the Vegas that everyone used to talk about where prices are much easier on the wallet.

Do you have any insight into valet parking at Las Vegas hotels? Reason, we were in town a week ago and valet parked at every hotel. Our camera and GPS unit were stolen from our car and the only time it was unlocked is when we valet parked.á

We didn’t discover they were missing until a couple of days later when we went to use them and there is no damage on the car. Is this a problem in Las Vegas? Any ideas of what can be done? Any help would be appreciated.

Evelyn Dotson

Ted Responds:

This is the first time we’ve had anyone bring this issue up in the 9 years of the newsletter so it probably isn’t widespread. Valet parkers make really good money and would be stupid to jeopardize it. Also, they have casino surveillance cameras on them pretty much at all times.

However, it is a good reminder for people to check their stuff after they valet. If something is missing, security can roll back all the cameras that your car was on and probably catch who did it. If you know the license plate on the car you were driving, you can write the property and tell them your problem. Don’t delay as I don’t know how long they keep surveillance video.

In the future… for any theft on a casino property (purse/wallet theft or anything): Keep track of your stuff the best you can (so you know when it is missing) and report any theft as soon as possible. Pretty good chance they can roll some video back and try to see who did it. At the very least, they can then keep an eye out for the thief.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Christmas is in the air, New Years Eve is getting close, and this newsletter is jammed with amazing info and photos. Let’s get started!

New Years Eve, New Years Eve, New Years Eve, New Years Eve…

The fireworks are set, the concerts ready to roll, and the nightclubs all trying to top each other. The theme is “The Best Is Yet To Come” and the fireworks show will reach from the MGM Grand to The Stratosphere with an display lasting more than eight minutes! (As always, sustained winds at the top of the hotels could put a damper on the display, but so far it has always gone off).

We have an extended listing of New Years Eve events running down the side of the newsletter this week or you can go direct to http://www.accessvegas.com/new-years-eve-2007

Bellagio’s Holiday Display is attracting droves of visitors and features some new twists not seen in years past:

Click on either of the above photos to enjoy the entire amazing holiday photo set for a taste of the season from Las Vegas. Don’t forget to spread the Christmas cheer: All photos in our Bellagio Gardens Christmas 2007 can be sent as a free E-Card. Send friends and family members some holiday E-Cards on us!

We say goodbye and a big Thank You to Celine Dion. Her five year run just wrapped up at Caesars, lasting far longer than originally anticipated. 3 million people saw the 717 shows. Whether you love or loathe her, no one can deny the amazing track record (4000 seats nightly) for a single headliner in the modern Las Vegas era.

What’s more, she adopted Las Vegas as her “hometown” and was very active in the community with charity and other events. She even occasionally was spotted shopping at the Henderson Walmart (closest to her Lake Las Vegas home)! If you missed her here, we do have tickets various dates of her pending tour: Celine Dion World Tour Tickets

Bette Midler is Celine’s replacement, and everyone will be watching to see how she does. Elton John will also be playing his selected Ceasars dates. Here are related links:

Hannah Montana Hits Las Vegas – With Las Vegas now having more than two million residents, Miley “Hanna Montana” Cyrus’ two tour dates here sold out in a matter of minutes. A third date was added, and sold out immediately. If your kids are old enough to visit and young enough to enjoy Hanna Montana (and you understand that sold-out concert resale tickets are going to be a bit expensive), you can check out Hanna Montana Las Vegas Concert Tickets

Vegas On TV – The Las Vegas Bowl (Tickets) airs on ESPN at 5:00 PM Pacific Time on December 22, 2007 with BYU looking for revenge over a struggling UCLA team. Again this year, NBC’s Holiday On Ice airs on Christmas Day (check local NBC listings). The event was taped a couple of weeks ago at The Orleans.

Goodbye Sweet Louie – Checkmates singer Marvin “Sweet Louie” Smith passed away last week while performing aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean. If you have visited Las Vegas for more than a few times, you probably saw The Checkmates performing somewhere. It would be easier to list the places they didn’t play over the decades!

The past few years they alternated between The Sahara, Casino Montelago (Lake Las Vegas) and Arizona Charlies East. Sweet Louie was fond of saying that every night was a Saturday night when they were performing, and I saw them light up more than one casino lounge over the years. Video, photos and other info is still online at http://www.thecheckmates.com

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Running a few days late here. I’d love to tell you it was because of lounging around the pool in flip-flops with Jimmy Buffet playing, but I was a little under the weather. Doing better, and looking forward to enjoying our unusually warm weather.

Las Vegas Kings? – This weekend is the crescendo of the NBA All-Star game hype, which has driven intense speculation of Las Vegas getting an NBA team. The biggest buzz is the possibility of the Sacramento Kings moving to town. Kings owners are the same family that own The Palms and the city of Sacramento has been loathe to give them a new arena.

My take? I grew up in an NBA city loving the game. But the very reason that most cities chase a pro sports franchise is for the validation of being a “major league” city. It brings an identity, and gets your city lots of TV mention during the sports season.

People already know where Las Vegas is and what we are about. We don’t struggle for recognition! Add to that the fact that most people living here are transplants, and already have allegiances to their team from “back home.”

Would every game sell out? Absolutely. Probably with 40% locals and 60% visitors from the other teams’ city. This would add another 500,000 tourists a year (provided that every visitor was taking a trip here outside of their normal visiting pattern), but are the Las Vegas team players going to enjoy playing in front of a hostile crowd on their home court night after night? Just something to think about that no one has yet brought up.

Bottom Line: The longer Las Vegas begs for any major league team regardless of sport, the more it makes us look like a second rate city begging for a team to help our identity. Not needed.

Every Breath You Take – I’ve rarely seen a buzz like the one surrounding the Police reunion tour. They are stopping in Las Vegas on June 15, 2007. Tickets have sold out quickly but we do have limited tickets available for shows in most cities (not just Las Vegas): Police Reunion Tour Tickets

The Mel Brooks Musical Comedy The Producers Sells Out First Preview Performance At Paris Las Vegas – Following in the tradition of the Broadway production, the MEL BROOKS musical comedy THE PRODUCERS (ticket link) at Paris Las Vegas announced today, yesterday’s first preview performance was a sell out. “When The Producers opened on Broadway they performed to sold out audiences in New York,” said Michael Weaver, vice-president of marketing for Paris Las Vegas. “We are thrilled the Las Vegas production is following the same pattern.” Based on Mel Brooks’ Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, the show tells the story of down-on-his-luck theatrical producer, Max Bialystock (Brad Oscar) and Leo Bloom (Larry Raben), a mousy accountant. Together, with the help of their flamboyant director, Roger DeBris (David Hasselhoff), they hatch the ultimate scam: raise more money than you need for a sure-fire Broadway flop and pocket the difference. The group was slammed broadside by a school bus of Catholic teens on their way to see the Beatles make their television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. Click to Read The Full Story …

Keith Urban’s “Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy World Tour” Lands At Mandalay Bay Saturday, June 9 – Keith Urban’s (ticket link) much-anticipated return to the concert stage is set for the Mandalay Bay Events Center Saturday, June 9 at 8 p.m. The electrifying show will feature hits from Urban’s recent multi-platinum album, Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing, as well as many of the No. 1 hits that have defined his career. Jay’s White Hot Diamond! – Since 2002, dozens of shows in Las Vegas have opened and closed each year. During this same period, Jay White as Neil Diamond (ticket link), with his powerful band, has continued to heat up the Riviera’s Le Bistro stage with a concert style performance that captivates all ages. Rumors seem to spread quickly in this town and the word is that Jay White is “Truly Amazing!” At least that’s the quote from Leeza Gibbons of “Entertainment Tonight” and the reviews are the same from Jay Leno to Neil Diamond’s mother. Even Diamond himself was quoted saying; “Jay’s tribute is my favorite!” and upon meeting, the original signed their photo; “Jay keep singing, so I can stay home and relax,” a true testament to White’s talent. Mural, Mural On The Wall – The Las Vegas Hilton is now home to the largest hand painted mural in Las Vegas, a 128′ X 56’10’ image of Hilton headliner Barry Manilow (ticket link) on display on the property’s main tower (South facing). Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 3 — Sit-n-Go – with Victor H. Royer. The other alternatives are the very popular Sit-n-Go tournaments. These take the form and structure of usually only one table tournaments, which in the game of Texas Hold’Em will mean a table of 10 players, and that is all that there will be for that tournament. This is the same structure that is usually used in the brick-and-mortar casino poker rooms and card rooms for satellite tournaments, usually referred to as one table satellites. These are also offered on the Internet in precisely the Sit-n-Go format, and they also can qualify players to other tournaments, including many of the land-based tournaments on the WPT and WSOP circuits. Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Dear Las Vegas Newsletter Editor,

My husband will be in Las Vegas for about four days from in 24- out28 March 2007. It is part of a 40th wedding anniversary holiday we are taking. We are staying at the Bellagio Hotel and have heard that Cirque De Soleil O is very good to see.

We are very interested in hearing some good jazz and as it doesn’t feature in any of your newsletters so far, can you tell us if there is anything good on in jazz at that time? Also, we both like swimming. I am assuming there will be indoor pools. Is there any aquacize classes available in the Bellagio pool if there is one? Sorry to be so ignorant, but have no real information on Las Vegas at all. We are also interested in the desert and its features.

Penelope Toltz.

Ted Responds:

Las Vegas is a great place to spend an anniversary, and congratulations on your 40’th. What a milestone!

You didn’t mention whether you were interested in traditional jazz or smooth (modern) jazz. We do have a traditional jazz radio station KUNV 91.5 FM which you may want to tune to when you hit town. If smooth jazz is more your taste, 105.7 FM Smooth Jazz website lists a number of events. Sorry… neither stations stream at this time. An updated list of all jazz related events usually appears here: Smooth Jazz Hotspots

No indoor pools at any of the major resorts last time we checked. Pools in Las Vegas are geared toward relaxation and recreation, not so much exercise. While I certainly applaud your commitment to exercise, this is a special occasion and it is OK to come here and enjoy letting yourself go for a few days! If anyone

Is there anyway you can create your links to articles so that they do not hijack the web page? When I click on most of your article links they go to your web site for the article which is fine, but when I am finished reading the article and I hit the back button, most of the time the article will re-appear rather than sending me back to the newsletter.

If I go to the history for the back button and click on the occurrence before the article link, it takes me completely out of my email account and I have to re-log in.

Gail Heverly-Smith

Ted Responds:

I’m guessing you are among the growing number of people who read their email online (on a web page, not using an email program) and certainly more and more people are doing so. While most of these services open up links to other web pages in new browser windows, yours evidently doesn’t. There is a simple solution:

When putting your mouse arrow (on your screen) over a web page link, click the link with your RIGHT mouse button, not the usual left button. A small menu will appear. Choose “Open In New Tab (or Window) or similar command depending you your setup. This will open the story link without closing your email!

We don’t purposely create our newsletter to “hijack” any web pages. What is happening is that when you click to read the stories, you are simply “surfing” to the page with the story and away from your email. We will consider what we can do in the future to rectify this on our end. In the meantime, the above tip is useful in any internet surfing situation where you don’t want to completely leave the present page you are on.

Hope This Helps!

Show Review: Amazing Johnathan

by Nancy Hruska

Well, it looks as though conventional magic and traditional punch line comedy have viciously been tossed out a 20 story hotel casino. Their replacements? Shameful jokes, psychic strippers, humiliated audience members, bad karate theatre, and the revival of the lost art of foam magic. The perpetrator? The Amazing Johnathan.

When it comes to competitive top Las Vegas shows, a comic magician who is undyingly abrasive with absolutely no sense of shame could be a recipe for disaster. But in Johnathan&’s show, where nothing is sacred and no act too vile, this guy is just pure genius. Click to read the complete review …

Bye-Bye Boardwalk – After almost 40 years on the Las Vegas Strip the Boardwalk hotel-casino is now officially closed. The MGM-Mirage is tearing down the property to build Project City Center. The $5 billion development is expected to open in 2010. It will include a 60-story, 4,000-room hotel-casino, boutique hotels, a major shopping mall and more than 1,600 luxury condominiums. Click to Read Full Story (with streaming video)

Purple Reign Moves To Monte Carlo – In related news, Boardwalk regular performers Purple Reign (Prince Tribute Show) have moved to the Monte Carlo, where they recreate the sights and sounds of Prince at the Monte Carlo Pub and Brewery every Wednesday at 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. There is no cover charge and patrons must be at least 21 years of age.

Purple Reign takes the audience on a musical journey of some of Prince&’s greatest hits. The group&’s repertoire includes popular songs such as &”Let’s Go Crazy,&” &”You’ve Got the Look,&” &”Kiss,&” &”Take Me With You,&” &”Raspberry Beret,&” &”Little Red Corvette,&” &”1999&” and &”Purple Rain.&” One of Las Vegas’ hottest nightspots, the Monte Carlo Pub & Brewery is one of the largest microbreweries in the country.

A New Day For Legends in Concert – Celine Dion Joins Celebrity Tribute Spectacular – There’s a new day coming with Brigitte Valdez returning as Celine Dion in “Legends in Concert,” the award-winning celebrity tribute at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. With an incredibly strong voice and fabulous costumes, Valdez transforms herself into the incomparable diva to perform “I Drove All Night,” “Because You Love Me,” “Power of Love,” “That’s the Way It Is” and “My Heart Will Go On.” Valdez last performed as Celine Dion in Legends in 2003. The Most Extravagant and Expensive Burger Experience Ever Conceived – In the land of $100 margaritas and $1,000 shots of whiskey, it should come as no surprise that Las Vegas is now home to an extravagant burger-eating experience to rival all others. Renowned Chef Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay presents FleurBurger 5000, a gastronomic jackpot. The fois gras and black truffle-topped Kobe burger is served on a brioche truffle bun and garnished with Chef Keller’s special sauce consisting of, you guessed it, more truffles.

To accompany this decadent burger, guests enjoy a bottle of Chateau Petrus 1990 poured in Ichendorf Brunello stemware, exclusively imported from Italy. After the meal, the team at Fleur de Lys ship the glasses to the guest’s home at no additional charge. This level of decadence can be savored for $5,000.

Sexiest Shows in VegasFantasy at Luxor Tops the List AOL cityguide recently voted Fantasy at Luxor the &”Sexiest Show in Vegas!&” Set in Luxor&’s 350-seat Atrium Showroom, this provocative adult revue brings fantasies to life with the sizzling Fantasy dancers. Choreographed by Cris Judd and Eddie Garcia and produced by Emmy-award winner Anita Mann, Fantasy features sultry costumes and delicious dance numbers that tempt audiences with just the right amount of seduction.

Fantasy wasn&’t the only MGM MIRAGE show to make the list: La Femme at MGM Grand, straight from the Crazy Horse in Paris, holds the number three spot, while those sexy Aussies of Thunder From Down Under at Excalibur and Cirque du Soleil&’s Zumanity at New York-New York made #9 and #10 respectively.

New TI Bridge Gives Guests Easy Access – Shopping has become another great reason to visit Las Vegas, with easy access to many high-end luxury stores you would only find all together in Los Angeles or New York. Now a Las Vegas shopping excursion is even easier with Treasure Island&’s new pedestrian bridge connecting the AAA Four Diamond award-winning property to the Fashion Show mall.

An elegant rotunda entryway and large screen video display welcome guests traveling to and fro with escalators to the bridge conveniently located inside TI between Tangerine Lounge & Nightclub and Canter’s Deli. Fashion Show is one of the nation’s largest shopping malls featuring more than 250 specialty shops and restaurants as well as seven high-end flagship department stores including Bloomingdale’s Home Furniture Store, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Robinsons-May and Saks Fifth Avenue. Castaways Goes Boom – The old Castaways hotel-casino is no more. The 19-story off-Strip hotel — which used to be known as the Showboat — was imploded shortly after 7 a.m. this morning about three miles east of downtown Las Vegas. The casino had closed in January 2004 after changing hands in bankruptcy court. Click to Read Full Story (with streaming video) (Editors Note: There was virtually no advance warning to the media about this implosion or we certainly would have let you know).

FEATURE STORY: Jerry Lewis

Rarely do you get a chance to see a living legend — someone who both
transformed comedy and has ties to old Las Vegas. And as someone in my
mid-30’s, my only knowledge of Jerry Lewis has been the telethons and his
goofy comedy movies from long before I was born.

As noted here a few weeks ago, Jerry Lewis recently inked a 20 year deal
with The Orleans hotel, and relatively new off-strip property located about
10 minutes from the Strip on Tropicana. Since he is going to be a regular
headliner (3-4 times a year), I decided it would be great chance to find
out what he is all about. Boy, am I glad I did!

Jerry Lewis took the stage to a standing ovation, and you could tell that
he was in his element. He was essentially his own opening act, spending the
first 20 minutes or so telling some (by his own admittance) corny jokes and
then singing a couple of numbers. Not unlike what you might see on the
telethon.

After an instrumental by his 21 piece orchestra, he came back and really
kicked it into high gear. There was no specific theme, but more of a
nonstop intertwining of entertainment. He’d do some of the impressions he
made famous over the years, live bits from his films, and sing songs.

If you want to know who Jim Carrey borrowed his act from, go see Jerry
Lewis. This man’s physical humor wasn’t a creation for the silver screen,
and he still was just about as quick and agile as ever, including brushing
himself off from a nasty (unplanned) fall and going on like a trooper. He
pulled off everything from catching a spinning, tossed cigarette in his
mouth to his funny faces and antics, all the time doing banter, jokes, and
commentary in his many unique voices.

Those who long for old Las Vegas, or just wonder what it would have been
like would enjoy the time he spends reminiscing about Dean Martin and Frank
Sinatra, which included personal thoughts and stories as well as a few
short video clips. As a tribute to Frank, he sang Sinatra’s infamous
arrangement of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”

Jerry is 74 years old, was very ill last year with spinal meningitis, was
only one week removed from the grueling MDA telethon, and on his fourth of
four nights. And yet, he did an energetic 2 hours 15 minutes virtually
nonstop, roughly twice the length that most Las Vegas shows now run. And,
you could see his joy of performing and love toward the audience shining
through.

Go see Jerry Lewis. If you are a little older, and you enjoy some of the
classic songs from that era and remember his films, go see Jerry Lewis. If
you want to see how a single performer can command a stage and an audience
in a way few do today, go see Jerry Lewis. If you wonder what is was like
back in the Rat Pack days when Las Vegas was a little more swinging, and
the performers truly looked like they were having a great time onstage, go
see Jerry Lewis.

Go see Jerry Lewis.

Jerry is scheduled to perform 3-4 times a year at The Orleans and we’ll
print future dates as the information is available. Tickets started at
$54.95 plus tax for this last run, and The Orleans runs a free shuttle from
the Barbary Coast on the Strip to the Orleans 365 days a year.

Thanks for the kind words. If you are hard-core for Las Vegas and you want
more info than you get here every week, let me suggest the Everything Las
Vegas newsletter. This twice-weekly newsletter is packed (and I mean packed
— about twice as long as this one) with any and all news pertaining to Las
Vegas tourism. Unlike mine, it provides substantial coverage to casinos and
restaurants away from The Strip and Downtown. Subscribe information is at

Certainly, I think the majority of people come for the gambling. For those
interested in the scenery, browse the tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours and
for those who don’t have an interest in gambling, we have non-gaming
activities listed at http://www.accessvegas.com/activities-entertainment-kids.htm But, I agree
that 99.9999% come here to get a little wild and reckless and maybe hit it
big!

While this is subjective, these are the five I’d avoid at all costs: Circus
Circus, Imperial Palace, Holiday Inn Boardwalk, Westward Ho, and Lady Luck.
The best? The Aladdin (hands down), but with Bellagio a close second.
Downtown? Main St. Station, although it doesn’t hold a candle to the other
two.

The MGM Theme Park usually does a “Haunted Park.” I’ll post info on it when
available. The Tropicana is home to the Fetish & Fantasy Halloween Ball.
More info on that available at http://www.halloweenball.com/main.htm

Most of the major hotels have a race book in the sports book area. I have
virtually no knowledge regarding horse racing. Readers, if you bet the
ponies, drop a line to allvegastv@aol.com and let us know which are the
better race books and why!

I’m a guy, but I know women who have checked out the male revue there and
had a good time. Call ahead — I’m not sure if it plays every night or just
weekends. That area of town is marginal, but security around the venue is
fine and they have on-site parking.

I’m also the wrong person to ask about spas and hair … so readers, help
us out! Tell us about your favorite spa and the best hair salon on the
strip at allvegastv@aol.com
